Resumen A nivel mundial, la permanencia estudiantil es un factor importante para generar estrategias que contribuyan a disminuir la tasa de deserción y garantizar la culminación exitosa de los procesos académicos de los estudiantes. El trabajo investigativo tiene como objetivo analizar las condiciones socioeconómicas y la permanencia de los estudiantes en la carrera de Odontología de la Universidad San Gregorio de Portoviejo. La investigación se direccionó con enfoque positivista y utilizó el método cuantitativo correlacional, se consideró una muestra de 292 estudiantes, a quiénes se les aplicó una encuesta virtual y se utilizó el formulario de Google Forms y un cuestionario con escala de Likert. Para el análisis de los datos, se utilizó la versión 25.0 del software estadístico informático IBM SPSS v25 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences/Paquete Estadístico para las Ciencias Sociales). De acuerdo con el procedimiento estadístico descriptivo e inferencial, se determinó que los resultados muestran una correlación de Pearson de .495 entre las variables condición socioeconómica y permanencia. La correlación de Pearson es un coeficiente que mide la fuerza y dirección de la relación entre dos variables. El valor p asociado a esta correlación es de .000, lo que indica que la correlación es estadísticamente significativa. Esto significa que existe una relación positiva moderada entre las variables condición socioeconómica y permanencia.

Abstract Worldwide, student permanence is an important factor in generating strategies that contribute to reducing the dropout rate and guaranteeing the successful completion of students' academic processes. The objective of the investigative work is to analyze the socioeconomic conditions and the permanence of students in the Dentistry career at the San Gregorio de Portoviejo University. The research was directed with a positivist approach and used the quantitative correlational method, a sample of 292 students was considered, to whom a virtual survey was applied and the Google Forms form and a questionnaire with a Likert scale were used. For data analysis, version 25.0 of the computer statistical software IBM SPSS v25 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used. According to the descriptive and inferential statistical procedure, it was determined that the results show a Pearson correlation of .495 between the variables socioeconomic condition and permanence. The Pearson correlation is a coefficient that measures the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables. The p value associated with this correlation is .000, indicating that the correlation is statistically significant. This means that there is a moderate positive relationship between the variables socioeconomic condition and permanence.

Resumen Este estudio tiene como objetivo indicar el potencial de la inteligencia artificial (IA) en los informes epidemiológicos de dientes cariados, perdidos y restaurados. Como prueba de concepto, nuestro modelo de estudio utilizó imágenes panorámicas de rayos X y un algoritmo de inteligencia artificial para la numeración de dientes, la detección de caries y las restauraciones con una precisión superior al 80 % para dichas tareas de diagnóstico. El resultado fue el número de dientes cariados, perdidos y restaurados según la edad del paciente y el índice CPOD (número de dientes cariados, perdidos y obturados) que varió de 3,6 (hasta 20 años) a 20,4 (+60 años). Por tanto, se sugiere que la IA es un método prometedor para automatizar la recopilación de datos de salud mediante el análisis de rayos X.

Abstract This study aims to indicate the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in epidemiological reports of decayed, missed and restored teeth. As a proof of concept our study model used panoramic x-ray images and an AI algorithm for tooth numbering, detection of the caries and restorations with accuracy over 80% for such diagnostic tasks. The output came as the number of decayed, missed and restored teeth according to patient's age and the DMFT index (number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth) which varied from 3.6 (up to 20 years old) to 20.4 (+60 years old). Thus, it is suggested that AI is a promising method to automate health data collection through the analysis of x-rays.

Resumen Los cementos bioactivos a base de silicato tricálcico se introdujeron en el mercado para uso en odontología, con una variedad de aplicaciones clínicas. Estos cementos pueden estar en contacto con tejidos como la pulpa dental o el periodonto, en caso de extrusión no intencionada. Por lo tanto, es importante conocer la genotoxicidad y la citoxicidad de estos materiales. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la citotoxicidad y genotoxicidad de los selladores bioactivos Bio-C® Sealer y MTA Repair HP® en fibroblastos humanos. Se prepararon discos de selladores bioactivos Bio-C® Sealer y MTA Repair HP® y se colocaron durante 24h en condiciones de esterilidad. Los discos se colocaron en medio de cultivo a 2,5mg/mL dentro de un mezclador de rodillos SRT6D (Stuart, Reino Unido) a 60rpm durante 24h. Los eluidos obtenidos se incubaron durante 24h con fibroblastos de la línea celular ATCC previamente activados y cultivados al 80% de confluencia. La citotoxicidad se evaluó mediante ensayos Alamar Blue® y LIVE/DEAD; así como el análisis de los ensayos Tunnel y Mitotracker para evaluar la genotoxicidad, utilizando el microscopio confocal láser de barrido. En el ensayo Alamar Blue®, el Sellador Bio-C® presentó una proliferación celular del 87%, mientras que el sellador MTA Repair HP® fue del 72%. Se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre el sellador MTA Repair HP® con respecto al control negativo (p=<0.001). En cuanto a las pruebas de genotoxicidad, en el ensayo Tunel, ambos materiales tiñen el núcleo de las células fibroblásticas expuestas a los eluidos, mientras que el ensayo Mitotracker, el sellador MTA Repair HP®, mostró una mayor función mitocondrial que el Bio-C® Sealer. Los selladores a base de silicato de calcio, Bio-C® Sealer y MTA Repair HP® no son citotóxicos y tienen una baja genotoxicidad.

Abstract Bioactive cements based on tricalcium silicate have been introducedto the market for use in dentistry, with a variety of clinical applications. These cements are in contact with vital tissues such as dental pulp or periodontium in cases of unintentional extrusion; thus, it is important to know the genotoxicity and cytoxicity of these materials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of bioactive sealers, Bio-C® Sealer and MTA Repair HP®, in human fibroblasts. Discs of bioactive sealers Bio-C® Sealer, and MTA Repair HP®, were prepared and set for 24h under sterile conditions. The discs were placed in culture medium at 2.5mg/mL inside a SRT6D roller mixer (Stuart, UK) at 60rpm for 24h. The eluates obtained were incubated for 24h with previously activated and cultured ATCC cell line fibroblasts at 80% confluence. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by Alamar Blue® and LIVE/ DEAD assays, as well as the analysis of the Tunel and Mitotracker assays to evaluate genotoxicity using the confocal laser-scanning microscope. In the Alamar Blue® assay, the Bio-C® Sealer presented a cell proliferation of 87%, while the MTA Repair HP® Sealer was 72%. A statistically significant difference was found between the MTA Repair HP® Sealant and the negative control (p=<0.001). Regarding the genotoxicity tests, in the Tunel assay, both materials stain the nucleus of the fibroblast cells exposed to the eluates, while in the Mitotracker assay, the MTA Repair HP® Sealer showed greater mitochondrial function than the Bio-C® Sealer. Calcium silicate-based sealers, Bio-C® Sealer and MTA Repair HP®, are not cytotoxic and have low genotoxicity.

Resumen Las redes sociales se han convertido en un espacio idóneo para el intercambio de información y conocimiento. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la utilidad de la implementación de Instagram como herramienta didáctica, para fomentar y facilitar el aprendizaje del estudiantado en los cursos teóricos y de laboratorio de Odontopediatría y Ortodoncia durante el 2022. Se crearon cuentas privadas en Instagram para cada uno de los cuatro cursos. Durante 4 meses se posteó información de relevancia para repasar conceptos y fortalecer el proceso de enseñanza- aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Al finalizar los cursos se realizó una encuesta que contenía las siguientes variables: utilidad de la red social, cantidad de información proporcionada, lugar preferido para ver el contenido (muro o historias) y si los estudiantes recomiendan el uso de Instagram en otros cursos del Departamento de Odontopediatría y Ortodoncia. Para la asociación de variables se utilizó la prueba de chi-cuadrado, el valor de p<0,05, 95%Cl. La participación en las cuentas fue de 222 individuos; la interacción de los estudiantes con las cuentas fue del 87,5% respecto a las historias, el 95% observaron las historias de forma completa. Hubo una diferencia estadísticamente significativa respecto al lugar donde se publicaba la información: las historias fue el lugar preferido por los estudiantes. La participación en la encuesta fue de 167 estudiantes. A todos los estudiantes les resultó muy útil o útil el contenido en la red social. El 100% de los encuestados recomendaron mantener la implementación de las redes sociales en los cursos teóricos del Departamento. Instagram no es solo una aplicación de carácter social, sino que constituye un canal para hacer el proceso de enseñanza más dinámico y atractivo. Los docentes pueden integrar esta plataforma social para fomentar la motivación y el aprendizaje en los estudiantes.

Abstract Social networks have become an ideal space for the exchange of information and knowledge. The objetive of this study was to determine the usefulness of the implementation of Instagram as a didactic tool to promote and facilitate student learning in the theoretical and laboratory courses of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics during 2022. Private Instagram accounts were created for each of the four courses. During 4 months relevant information was posted to review concepts and strengthen the teaching-learning process of the students. At the end of the courses, a survey was conducted containing the following variables: usefulness of the social network, amount of information provided, preferred place to view content (wall or stories) and whether students recommend the use of Instagram in other courses of the Department of Dentistry and Orthodontics. For the association of variables, the chi-square test was used, value of p<0.05, 95%Cl. The participation in the accounts was 222 individuals; the interaction of the students with the accounts was 87.5% with respect to the stories, 95% observed the stories completely. There was a statistically significant difference with respect to where the information was posted: stories was the preferred place for students. There were 167 students participating in the survey. All the students found very useful or useful the content of the application on the social network.100% of the respondents recommended keeping the implementation of social networks in the theoretical courses of the Department. Instagram is not only a social application but also a channel to make the teaching process more dynamic and attractive. Teachers can integrate this social platform to foster motivation and learning in students.

Resumen Describir la literatura científica sobre los usos y la aplicación de los probióticos en odontología. Se realizó una búsqueda electrónica sin restricción de fechas en las bases de datos PubMed y Scopus. Se recopilaron los artículos y se estudiaron sus características, objetivos y métodos utilizando las siguientes palabras clave: "probióticos", "S. mutans", "salud oral", "biofilm", entre otras. Para la presente revisión bibliográfica se escogieron 10 estudios que investigan la acción probiótica de determinadas cepas como Lactobaccillus y Bifidobacterium en tratamientos periodontales y ortodóncicos, entre otros. Estos estudios demostraron su eficacia en diferentes tipos de presentaciones como comprimidos y yogur, en diferentes tipos de poblaciones como lactantes, jóvenes y adultos mayores. Por último, gran parte de estos estudios determinaron la reducción del biofilm. Con base en los artículos de investigación, cepas como Lactobaccillus y Bifidobacterium mostraron efectos positivos en la reducción de placa bacteriana como S. mutans en periodos de corto y largo plazo en diferentes poblaciones. Existe una gran producción de estudios relativos a la aplicación de probióticos en odontología. Sin embargo, es necesario realizar estudios con otros tipos de bacterias y diferentes vehículos para determinar con mayor precisión qué especies ayudan a mantener la salud bucodental.

Abstract To describe the scientific literature on the uses and application of probiotics in dentistry. An electronic search was carried out without date restriction in the PubMed and Scopus databases. The articles were compiled, and their characteristics, objectives and methods were studied using the following keywords: "probiotics", "S. mutans", "oral health", "biofilm", among others. For the present literature review, 10 studies were chosen that investigate the probiotic action of certain strains such as Lactobaccillus and Bifidobacterium in periodontal and orthodontic treatments, among others. These studies proved their efficacy in different types of presentations such as tablets and yogurt, in different types of populations such as infants, young people and older adults. Finally, a large part of these studies determined biofilm reduction. Based on the research articles, strains such as Lactobaccillus and Bifidobacterium showed positive effects in the reduction of bacterial plaque such as S. mutans in short- and long-term periods in different populations. There is a large production of studies concerning the application of probiotics in dentistry. However, it is necessary to carry out studies with other types of bacteria and different vehicles to determine more precisely which species help to maintain oral health.

Resumen El objetivo del studio fue determinar los índices de reprobación de los cursos de la malla curricular de la Licenciatura en Odontología de la Universidad de Costa Rica de las cohortes del 2007 al 2014. Se utilizaron los datos de 736 expedientes. Las variables consideradas fueron: sexo, edad de ingreso, nacionalidad, estado civil, hijos, lugar y colegio de procedencia, nota de examen de admisión y cursos aprobados. Los datos se obtuvieron del Sistema de Aplicaciones Estudiantiles, los expedientes físicos y del Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones de Costa Rica. Se realizó estadística descriptiva, análisis bivariado y multivariado. El 98% de los estudiantes fueron costarricenses, el 68% mujeres, el 79% ingresó según la nota de admisión, el 43% ingresó con una edad de 18 años o menos, el 50% provenía de un colegio público, el 77% residía en la Gran Área Metropolitana y el 95% eran solteros y permanecieron sin hijos. El abandono de los estudios se presentó mayoritariamente en los primeros 4 ciclos de la carrera de odontología. Los cursos de la malla curricular que menor tasa de éxito total obtuvieron fueron cursos de servicio: Química General, Química Orgánica y Matemática Elemental. De los cursos propios la Clínica de Odontopediatría y Ortodoncia y la Clínica de Endodoncia fueron los cursos con más reprobación. Hubo una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre la aprobación del curso de física y el colegio de procedencia. En la Licenciatura de Odontología de la Universidad de Costa Rica la reprobación es alta en los primeros cuatro ciclos de la Carrera, que es cuando más se imparten cursos de servicio. Respecto a los cursos propios, la Clínica de Odontopediatría y Ortodoncia y la Clínica de Endodoncia fueron los que obtuvieron la menor tasa de éxito.

Abstract The main objective of this study was to determine the failure rates of the courses in the curriculum of the Dentistry degree program at the University of Costa Rica for the cohorts from 2007 to 2014. Data from 736 records were used. The variables considered were the following: gender, age at admission, nationality, marital status, children, domicile, previous high school attended, admission exam scores, and approved courses. The data were obtained from the Student Application System, physical records, and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Costa Rica. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were performed. Among the students, 98% were Costa Rican, 68% were female, 79% were admitted based on their admission exam scores, 43% were admitted at the age of 18 or younger, 50% came from public schools, 77% resided in the Greater Metropolitan Area, and 95% were single and childless. The majority of study dropouts occurred in the first four cycles of the dentistry degree. The courses with the lowest overall success rate in the curriculum were service courses: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Elemental Mathematics. Among the core courses, the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Clinic and the Endodontics Clinic had the highest failure rates. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference between the approval rates of the physics course and the school of origin. In the Dentistry degree program at University of Costa Rica, the failure rate is high in the first four cycles of the program, which is when service courses are mainly offered. As fo the core courses, the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Clinic and the Endodontics Clinic had the lowest success rates.

Resumen Este artículo analiza la oferta de cupos en el programa nocturno de Odontología en una universidad federal de Brasil como una política de democratización de la Educación Superior con justicia social. Se reporta una investigación empírica con estudiantes de primer año y egresados de pregrado en clases diurna y nocturna, a través de la aplicación de un cuestionario y consulta con microdatos del Censo de Educación Superior. El análisis involucró distribución de frecuencias y prueba estadística. La carrera de Odontología nocturna recibe más estudiantes mayores de 25 años, primeros de la familia en asistir a la Educación Superior, con un intervalo de tres años o más entre la finalización del bachillerato y el ingreso en pregrado, trabajadores y con menores ingresos familiares que los que ingresan en la misma carrera para curso diurno. El programa nocturno cuenta con un número menor de egresados negros, morenos y de escuelas públicas que los que ingresaron, lo que demuestra la fragilidad de estos grupos en la permanencia y culminación de la Educación Superior. Abstract This article analyzes the offer of enrollment in the evening program in Dentistry at a federal university as a tool for the democratization of Higher Education with social justice. It reports empirical research with freshmen and graduates of daytime and evening programs, using a questionnaire and consultation to microdata from the Higher Education Census in Brazil. The analysis involved frequency distribution and statistical test. The Dentistry evening program showed a different student profile than the daytime program: average age over 25 years; longer interval between high school and university admission; larger proportion of students who are the first in their families to reach Higher Education; and, mainly, more working students. The evening course has a smaller number of black and brown graduates and public school graduates than new entrants, which demonstrate the fragility of these groups in terms of permanence and completion of Higher Education. Resumo Este artigo analisa a oferta de vagas no curso noturno de Odontologia de uma universidade federal enquanto democratização da Educação Superior com justiça social. Relata pesquisa empírica com ingressantes e concluintes do diurno e noturno, realizada por meio de aplicação de questionário e consulta a microdados do Censo da Educação Superior. A análise envolveu distribuição de frequências e teste estatístico. O curso de Odontologia noturno recebe mais estudantes acima de 25 anos, primeiros da família a cursar graduação, com intervalo de três anos ou mais entre o fim do Ensino Médio e o ingresso no curso, trabalhadores e com renda familiar menor que os ingressantes do diurno. O curso noturno tem menor número de concluintes pretos e pardos e de egressos das escolas públicas do que os ingressados, o que denota a fragilidade destes grupos na permanência e conclusão da Educação Superior. RESUMO Este estudo objetivou caracterizar o trabalho dos profissionais das equipes de saúde bucal da rede pública na pandemia da covid-19 do ponto de vista dos gestores. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo-qualitativo, com 163 gestores municipais de saúde da Bahia, que responderam a um questionário virtual, de junho a outubro de 2020. Foi realizada análise descritiva dos dados quantitativos utilizando o Statistical Package for the Social Science, e Análise Temática das respostas subjetivas, com auxílio do IRaMuTeQ. Um escopo de atuação das equipes de saúde bucal, que atuam em todos os níveis de atenção à saúde, foi reconhecido como mais abrangente que o tradicional nesse período. A pandemia deu ênfase às fragilidades crônicas nas condições de trabalho dos cirurgiões-dentistas, técnicos e auxiliares de saúde bucal da rede pública, como a insuficiência de instrumentais odontológicos e de insumos, a precária manutenção dos equipamentos odontológicos, a fragilidade dos vínculos empregatícios e a estrutura física inadequada nas unidades de saúde, comprometendo a biossegurança. ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the work of professionals from oral health teams in the public service, in the COVID-19 pandemic, from the point of view of managers. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative-qualitative study, with 163 municipal health managers in Bahia, who answered a virtual questionnaire, from June to October 2020. The descriptive analysis of the quantitative data was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science, and Thematic Analysis was applied to the subjective responses, using IRaMuTeQ. The scope of action of oral health teams, which operate at all levels of health care, was recognized as broader than the traditional in this period. The pandemic emphasized the chronic problems in the working conditions of dentists, technicians, and oral health assistants in the public service, such as the lack of dental instruments and supplies, the precarious maintenance of dental equipment, the fragility of employment relationships, and the inadequate physical structure in the health units, compromising biosecurity. RESUMEN Introducción: A lo largo de los años se ha propuesto una notable variedad de protocolos quirúrgicos periodontales, cuyo enfoque pasó de la simple resolución de defectos de tejidos blandos a la realización de procedimientos predecibles y mínimamente invasivos. Inicialmente se usaba el injerto gingival libre. Posteriormente se han probado diversas técnicas, incluidas aquellas con sustitutos de tejidos blandos, como membranas tipo Alloderm. Hoy en día se considera el gold standard el injerto de tejido conectivo subepitelial asociado al colgajo de avance coronal. Por último, se ha examinado la técnica Pinhole, con mayor preservación de tejido y resultado más estético. Objetivos: El objetivo de esta revisión fue la comparación de técnicas actualizadas para el tratamiento de recesiones múltiples en maxilar superior e inferior. El resultado del procedimiento se evaluó en términos de cobertura radicular completa, reducción de la recesión, ganancia en altura y volumen, resultado estético, dolor postoperatorio y morbilidad del lecho donante y receptor del paciente. Material y métodos: Se realizaron búsquedas electrónicas y manuales para recopilar estudios de boca dividida, ensayos clínicos controlados aleatorios, series de casos, estudios piloto, libros de periodoncia, estudios de casos, revisiones sistemáticas y metanálisis, incluyendo los defectos de recesiónes gingivales múltiples, en maxilar y mandibular, de las cuatro clases de Miller, debido a su extensa evidencia. Resultados: Se incluyeron treinta y cuatro publicaciones y se extrajeron datos sobre el resultado de las técnicas quirúrgicas de dieciocho artículos. La evaluación clínica analizó la cantidad de cobertura radicular completa, la reducción de la recesión y la ganancia de altura y volumen, mientras que la perspectiva del paciente se expresó en términos de satisfacción estética y posibles complicaciones postoperatorias. Los procedimientos de los últimos diez años mostraron mejores resultados en todos los factores mencionados anteriormente. Conclusión: La predictibilidad y la estabilidad del tratamiento a largo plazo representan los factores que guían el proceso de elección de la técnica y que añaden valor a los procedimientos más actualizados. Se observaron progresos tanto a nivel estético, al reducir las discrepancias entre el área intervenida y el tejido circundante, como a nivel postoperatorio, al aminorar las molestias del paciente. Los desafíos propios de esta rama pronto podrían encontrar respuesta gracias a su rápida evolución, la cual permite concebir más avances.

ABSTRACT Background: Along the years, a remarkable variety of periodontal surgical protocols has been proposed, the focus of which has shifted from the mere resolution of a soft tissue defect to the performance of predictable and minimally invasive procedures. Initially, the free gingival graft was used. Subsequently, many different techniques were experimented, including those using soft tissue substitutes, such as the Alloderm membrane. Nowadays, the association of the connective tissue graft with the coronally advanced flap is considered the gold standard. Finally, the Pinhole technique, being a more conservative method in terms of tissue preservation and aesthetic outcome, was proposed. Objectives: The aim of this review was the comparison of the updated techniques for the treatment of multiple periodontal recessions, affecting both maxilla and mandible. The procedure outcome was assessed in terms of complete root coverage, recession reduction, gain in height and volume, aesthetic outcome, patient’s post-operative pain and morbidity of donor and recipient sites. Material and methods: Electronic and hand searches were performed to collect split- mouth studies, randomized controlled clinical trials, case series, pilot studies, periodontal books, case studies, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, including maxillary and mandibular multiple gingival recession defects of all four Miller’s classes, for its extensive evidence. Results: Thirty-four publications were included and data regarding the surgical techniques outcome were extracted from eighteen articles. The clinical evaluation analyzed the amount of complete root coverage, recession reduction and gain in height and volume, while the patient’s perspective was expressed in terms of aesthetic satisfaction and possible postoperative complications. Procedures in the last ten years showed better results in all the above-mentioned factors. Conclusion: Procedural predictability and long-lasting treatment stability embody the factors driving the technique election process and adding value to more updated procedures. Progress was observed both at an aesthetic level, by reducing the discrepancias between the surgical region and the surrounding tissue, and at a postoperative level, by reducing patient discomfort. The challenges inherent to this branch could soon find answers thanks to its prompt evolution, which allows for further advances to be conceived.

RESUMEN Introducción: A lo largo de los años se ha propuesto una notable variedad de protocolos quirúrgicos periodontales, cuyo enfoque pasó de la simple resolución de defectos de tejidos blandos a la realización de procedimientos predecibles y mínimamente invasivos. Inicialmente se usaba el injerto gingival libre. Posteriormente se han probado diversas técnicas, incluidas aquellas con sustitutos de tejidos blandos, como membranas tipo Alloderm. Hoy en día se considera el gold standard el injerto de tejido conectivo subepitelial asociado al colgajo de avance coronal. Por último, se ha examinado la técnica Pinhole, con mayor preservación de tejido y resultado más estético. Objetivos: El objetivo de esta revisión fue la comparación de técnicas actualizadas para el tratamiento de recesiones múltiples en maxilar superior e inferior. El resultado del procedimiento se evaluó en términos de cobertura radicular completa, reducción de la recesión, ganancia en altura y volumen, resultado estético, dolor postoperatorio y morbilidad del lecho donante y receptor del paciente. Material y métodos: Se realizaron búsquedas electrónicas y manuales para recopilar estudios de boca dividida, ensayos clínicos controlados aleatorios, series de casos, estudios piloto, libros de periodoncia, estudios de casos, revisiones sistemáticas y metanálisis, incluyendo los defectos de recesiónes gingivales múltiples, en maxilar y mandibular, de las cuatro clases de Miller, debido a su extensa evidencia. Resultados: Se incluyeron treinta y cuatro publicaciones y se extrajeron datos sobre el resultado de las técnicas quirúrgicas de dieciocho artículos. La evaluación clínica analizó la cantidad de cobertura radicular completa, la reducción de la recesión y la ganancia de altura y volumen, mientras que la perspectiva del paciente se expresó en términos de satisfacción estética y posibles complicaciones postoperatorias. Los procedimientos de los últimos diez años mostraron mejores resultados en todos los factores mencionados anteriormente. Conclusión: La predictibilidad y la estabilidad del tratamiento a largo plazo representan los factores que guían el proceso de elección de la técnica y que añaden valor a los procedimientos más actualizados. Se observaron progresos tanto a nivel estético, al reducir las discrepancias entre el área intervenida y el tejido circundante, como a nivel postoperatorio, al aminorar las molestias del paciente. Los desafíos propios de esta rama pronto podrían encontrar respuesta gracias a su rápida evolución, la cual permite concebir más avances.

ABSTRACT Background: Along the years, a remarkable variety of periodontal surgical protocols has been proposed, the focus of which has shifted from the mere resolution of a soft tissue defect to the performance of predictable and minimally invasive procedures. Initially, the free gingival graft was used. Subsequently, many different techniques were experimented, including those using soft tissue substitutes, such as the Alloderm membrane. Nowadays, the association of the connective tissue graft with the coronally advanced flap is considered the gold standard. Finally, the Pinhole technique, being a more conservative method in terms of tissue preservation and aesthetic outcome, was proposed. Objectives: The aim of this review was the comparison of the updated techniques for the treatment of multiple periodontal recessions, affecting both maxilla and mandible. The procedure outcome was assessed in terms of complete root coverage, recession reduction, gain in height and volume, aesthetic outcome, patient’s post-operative pain and morbidity of donor and recipient sites. Material and methods: Electronic and hand searches were performed to collect split- mouth studies, randomized controlled clinical trials, case series, pilot studies, periodontal books, case studies, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, including maxillary and mandibular multiple gingival recession defects of all four Miller’s classes, for its extensive evidence. Results: Thirty-four publications were included and data regarding the surgical techniques outcome were extracted from eighteen articles. RESUMEN Introducción: Diversos autores mencionan que una correcta planificación de una dentadura parcial removible incrementa la satisfacción de los pacientes, en cuanto a estética y función. En casos donde la estética es prioritaria, se plantea un diseño sin retenedores visibles. En estos casos, la elaboración de la dentadura no demanda mayores costos, basta con establecer el diagnóstico correspondiente valorando los pilares, eje de inserción, áreas retentivas entre otros y establecer el diseño más conveniente según sea el caso. Objetivo: El objetivo fue realizar una revisión sistematizada sobre la percepción de la calidad de vida y satisfacción en pacientes portadores de dentaduras parciales removibles. Materiales y métodos: Se incluyeron 13 artículos científicos mediante la metodología PRISMA para la identificación, revisión e inclusión de los textos que formaron parte del estudio. Se seleccionaron tomando en cuenta el título, resumen y objetivo. Fueron considerados: revisiones sistemáticas, metaanálisis, estudios comparativos y revisiones de literatura que evaluaran diferentes criterios acerca de la satisfacción en pacientes portadores de dentadura parcial removible. Los artículos fueron leídos íntegramente, se analizaron objetivos, metodología y conclusión de cada uno de ellos, y posteriormente fueron analizados. Resultados: La queja más común fue el resultado estético, seguida del dolor durante la masticación. Se recomienda ofrecer un control periódico de la prótesis parcial removible para evaluar el correcto funcionamiento y ajuste de esta. Conclusión: El éxito del tratamiento con dentaduras parciales removibles se puede optimizar mediante el diagnóstico preciso del caso, considerando experiencias previas del paciente y teniendo en cuenta sus expectativas. Asimismo, comprender ciertos factores como su estilo de vida, nivel socioeconómico, estado de salud periodontal, personalidad, puede disminuir el riesgo de fracaso futuro del tratamiento con dentaduras parciales removibles.

ABSTRACT Introduction : Various authors mention that correct planning of a removable partial denture can offer adequate satisfaction in terms of aesthetics and function. In cases where aesthetics is a priority, a design without visible clasps is proposed. In addition, this elaboration does not demand higher costs, if the practitioner reaches the corresponding diagnosis and establishes the most convenient design for each specific case. Objective: The objective was to carry out a systematic review on the perception of quality of life and satisfaction in patients with removable partial dentures. Materials and methods: Thirteen scientific articles were included using the PRISMA methodology for the identification, review and inclusion of the texts that were part of this study. The articles were selected considering the title, abstract and objective. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, comparative studies, and literature reviews that included criteria about satisfaction in patients with removable partial dentures where evaluated. The articles were read in their entirety: the objectives, methodology and conclusions of each one of them were analyzed. Results: The most common complaint was the aesthetic result, followed by pain during chewing. It is recommended to offer periodic control of the removable partial denture to evaluate its correct functioning and fit. Conclusion: The success of the treatment with removable partial dentures can be evaluated through the precise diagnosis of the case, considering previous experiences and taking into account the expectations of the patient. Also, understanding the patient’s lifestyle, socioeconomic level, periodontal health status, and personality, may be factors that allow the practitioner to reduce the risk of future failure for the treatment with removable partial dentures.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre el resultado de las sobredentaduras maxilares según el número de implantes dentales en pacientes edéntulos totales. Materiales y Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica sistematizada en los motores de búsqueda Pubmed, Scopus y Web of Science y luego de establecer los criterios y filtros de la misma, se utilizaron 6 artículos. De los 6 artículos analizados, 4 fueron estudios de tipo ensayo clínico aleatorizado, 1 estudio prospectivo y 1 estudio retrospectivo. Resultados: Los resultados clínicos de las sobredentaduras maxilares, basados en el número de implantes sobre los cuales fueron soportadas, y comparando los protocolos más difundidos e investigados como los de All-on-4 y All-on-6, fueron similares. Se consideran óptimos, confiables, exitosos y longevos, sin diferencia significativa según el número de implantes dentales colocados. Conclusiones: Las sobredentaduras maxilares soportadas por 4 o 6 implantes fueron técnicas de tratamiento confiables, y ofrecen resultados comparables. Las complicaciones fueron limitadas y los resultados óptimos y duraderos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To review the literature on the outcome of maxillary overdentures according to the number of dental implants in edentulous patients. Materials and Methods: A systematic bibliographic search was carried out in the Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science search engines and, after appliying the criteria and filters, 6 articles were used. Of the 6 articles analyzed, 4 were randomized clinical trial type studies, 1 prospective study and 1 retrospective study. Results: The results of maxillary overdentures, according to the number of implants used to support them, and comparing the most widespread and researched protocols such as All-on-4 and All-on-6, were similar. They are considered optimal, reliable, successful and long-lived, with no significant difference within the number of dental implants placed. Conclusions: Maxillary overdentures supported by 4 or 6 implants were reliable, and exhibit comparable results. The complications were limited, and the results were optimal and enduring.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the work of professionals from oral health teams in the public service, in the COVID-19 pandemic, from the point of view of managers. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative-qualitative study, with 163 municipal health managers in Bahia, who answered a virtual questionnaire, from June to October 2020. The descriptive analysis of the quantitative data was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science, and Thematic Analysis was applied to the subjective responses, using IRaMuTeQ. The scope of action of oral health teams, which operate at all levels of health care, was recognized as broader than the traditional in this period. The pandemic emphasized the chronic problems in the working conditions of dentists, technicians, and oral health assistants in the public service, such as the lack of dental instruments and supplies, the precarious maintenance of dental equipment, the fragility of employment relationships, and the inadequate physical structure in the health units, compromising biosecurity. Thus, there is an opportunity to identify and implement necessary changes not only in the context of a health crisis, but in the post-pandemic period.

RESUMO Este estudo objetivou caracterizar o trabalho dos profissionais das equipes de saúde bucal da rede pública na pandemia da covid-19 do ponto de vista dos gestores. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo-qualitativo, com 163 gestores municipais de saúde da Bahia, que responderam a um questionário virtual, de junho a outubro de 2020. Foi realizada análise descritiva dos dados quantitativos utilizando o Statistical Package for the Social Science, e Análise Temática das respostas subjetivas, com auxílio do IRaMuTeQ. Um escopo de atuação das equipes de saúde bucal, que atuam em todos os níveis de atenção à saúde, foi reconhecido como mais abrangente que o tradicional nesse período. A pandemia deu ênfase às fragilidades crônicas nas condições de trabalho dos cirurgiões-dentistas, técnicos e auxiliares de saúde bucal da rede pública, como a insuficiência de instrumentais odontológicos e de insumos, a precária manutenção dos equipamentos odontológicos, a fragilidade dos vínculos empregatícios e a estrutura física inadequada nas unidades de saúde, comprometendo a biossegurança. Assim, abre-se uma oportunidade para identificar e implementar mudanças necessárias não apenas no contexto de crise sanitária, mas também no período pós-pandemia.

Abstract Sex estimation of unknown human remains is a common form of assessment in bioarchaeological and forensic practice. When remains are poorly preserved, teeth become important. Research regarding the use of teeth for sex estimation mainly uses odontometrics. Nevertheless, to date, few studies have aimed to systematically evaluate sexual dimorphism in tooth shape. The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe sexual dimorphism in the mandibular canine. Landmarks and semilandmarks were placed on the occlusal, mesiodistal and buccolingual views of mandibular canines of 56 individuals (37 males and 19 females) from the “Prof. Dr. Rómulo Lambre” collection. Moreover, the impact of dental wear in morphometric analyses on sexual dimorphism was explored. The shape of male and female canines differed significantly in the three views analyzed. Female canines showed a larger crown in relation to its root, while male canines showed greater roots in relation to their crown. While female canines showed a large development of the cingulum, male’s teeth exhibited less development of this trait. For these reasons, this study constitutes a first approach to show the usefulness of shape for estimating the sex of canine teeth. These differences might be the result of dissimilarities in the total amount of dentin and enamel due to the effect of sex-linked genes in the growth of these tissues. Resumen La estimación del sexo de restos humanos no identificados es una tarea habitual de la práctica bioarqueológica y forense. Cuando los restos están mal preservados, los dientes cobran especial relevancia. Las investigaciones sobre el uso de la dentición para la estimación sexual utilizan principalmente la odontometría. Sin embargo, hasta la fecha se han realizado pocos estudios destinados a evaluar sistemáticamente el dimorfismo sexual en la forma de los dientes. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar y describir el dimorfismo sexual en el canino mandibular. Se colocaron landmarks y semilandmarks en vistas oclusal, mesiodistal y bucolingual de caninos mandibulares de 56 individuos (37 masculinos y 19 femeninos) de la colección “Prof. Dr. Rómulo Lambre”. Asimismo, se exploró el impacto del desgaste dental en los análisis morfométricos de dimorfismo sexual. La forma de los caninos masculinos y femeninos difirió significativamente en las tres vistas analizadas. Los caninos femeninos mostraron una corona más grande en relación con la raíz, mientras que los caninos masculinos mostraron mayores raíces en relación con la corona. Los caninos femeninos exhibieron un gran desarrollo del cíngulo y los dientes masculinos presentaron un menor desarrollo de este rasgo. El presente estudio constituye una primera aproximación para mostrar la utilidad de la forma para la estimación del sexo de los dientes caninos. Las discrepancias observadas en estas estructuras podrían ser el resultado de diferencias en la cantidad total de dentina y esmalte debido al efecto de genes ubicados en los cromosomas sexuales involucrados en el desarrollo de estos tejidos.
