Abstract. Latin American indigenous migration is a multiethnic phenomenon, older than mestizo migration and with a transnational character due to ancient and vital community ties. Throughout the twentieth century indigenous migration in Latin America reconfigured the ethnic geography traced by modern states, not only within countries but also beyond the geopolitical lines that divide Latin America in the South from the U.S., Canada and the European continent in the North. This paper outlines a complex field of reflection about the different paths of indigenous migration flows in contemporary Latin America. Indigenous migration has had an impact on the redefinition of ethnic identities and in the new forms of resistance of indigenous peoples in the international economy, as well as in the reconstruction of indigenous consciousness in the ethnic configurations of more than one nation-state. Abstract This article proposes to contribute to the dialog on intra-regional migrations in Africa, with emphasis on immigration to Angola. Aiming to understand the processes of social, cultural and linguistic insertion in Angola, from the aspects that present themselves as obstacles and the transforming factors, with the support of the communicative methodology, ten communicative reports were carried out with immigrants and returnees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea-Conakry and Sao Tome and Principe. As a result, the war and armed conflicts in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo stand out as obstacles and reasons for emigration. For the other immigrants, economic issues were the basis of the displacement processes. Resumo O presente artigo propõe contribuir para o diálogo sobre as migrações intra-regionais em África, com ênfase na imigração em Angola. Objetivando compreender os processos de inserção social, cultural e linguística nesse país, a partir dos aspectos que se apresentam como obstáculo e os fatores transformadores, com o aporte da metodologia comunicativa, foram realizados dez relatos comunicativos com imigrantes e regressados provenientes da República Democrática do Congo, Guiné-Conacri e São Tomé e Príncipe. Abstract This study focuses on the experience of international students from Portuguese-speaking African countries in Higher Education in Portugal, specifically Guineans. It aimed to identify and understand the barriers experienced by these students in their academic trajectory, as well as to present recommendations for improving both social integration and academic success. In this perspective, eleven Guinean students that attend a Portuguese university were interviewed. The results show that students are faced with several barriers that affect not only their adaptation and social integration, but also their learning and, above all, their success. These include the delay in obtaining the visa, poor proficiency in Portuguese language, difficulty in finding accommodation and socio-cultural issues. There are also financial difficulties, in adapting to the new academic environment and learning difficulties. Finally, a set of recommendations is presented which aim to significantly improve the integration and success of this student group in Portugal. Resumo O presente estudo centra-se na experiência dos estudantes internacionais provenientes dos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa no Ensino Superior em Portugal, concretamente nos guineenses. Pretendeu-se identificar e compreender as barreiras experienciadas na sua trajetória universitária, bem como apresentar recomendações para a melhoria quer da integração social, quer do sucesso académico. Nesta lógica, foram entrevistados onze indivíduos que frequentavam uma universidade portuguesa. Os resultados mostram que os estudantes são confrontados, desde logo, com diversas barreiras que condicionam não só a adaptação e integração social, como a aprendizagem e sobretudo o sucesso. Abstract This article presents an investigation into the challenges faced by Brazilian students in Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using online survey data and interviews, the study highlights the significant impact of the pandemic on these students' mobility, financial stability, and mental health. Despite the challenges they faced and the uncertainties about their career prospects, Brazilian students demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The support they had from their contact networks and their temporal expectations played a relevant role in their agency. Utilizando questionários e entrevistas online, o estudo destaca o impacto significativo da pandemia na mobilidade, estabilidade financeira e saúde mental desses estudantes. Abstract Based on research focused on migratory mobilities in the American continent, the text seeks to explore and reflect on epistemologies and research methodologies that are interested in affective bonds - forms of care and friendship - generated in situations and contexts of migration in which children and adolescents are currently enrolled, among them, school contexts with the presence of migrant diversity. Abstract The paper draws on the notion of State though as critically discussed by Sayad and on related concepts (nationalism at a distance, integration) to analyse how the State naturalises the division between nationals and non-nationals, building unequal social hierarchies between immigrants and natives that affect the construction of the (social and individual) identities of the migrants themselves. The paper starts with a historical contextualisation of the relations between Tunisia and Italy. First, we show how the opposite migrations that have crossed the Mediterranean have been embedded in unequal racial and symbolic hierarchies characterising Italy and Tunisia, Europe and Africa. Abstract: For almost half a century, I have been studying the social reality of rural workers in the state of São Paulo. Numerous studies have been carried out with workers in sugarcane, coffee, and orange groves. The vast majority were migrants, coming from Vale do Jequitinhonha/MG and northeast of Brazil, a fact that expanded my research to these locations. Currently, the state of São Paulo is witnessing the prevalence of Agriculture 4.0, characterized by the dominance of machines and information technologies (IT), resulting in the erasure of the traces of these workers. Thus, I intend is to analyze the process of historical amnesia that arises from this, through the lenses of Sayad and other authors in two periods. Foram inúmeras pesquisas realizadas com trabalhadores/as que se destinavam aos canaviais, cafezais e laranjais. Abstract This article is an acknowledgement of Abdelmalek Sayad’s contribution, by adopting part of the author’s methodological proposal and turning this into a dialogue, with some reflection on Silvia Federici’s feminist criticism. The main aim here is to examine the social transformation resulting from migration while focusing on gender relations as part and parcel of the experience of both emigration and immigration. Resumen En este artículo utilizamos la “caja de herramientas” conceptual de Abdelmalek Sayad para analizar las iniciativas promovidas desde la Xunta de Galicia para el retorno de emigrantes. En particular nos interesan sus conceptualizaciones de los discursos sobre el retorno como expresiones del orden nacional y del pensamiento de Estado, y su concepción del retorno como núcleo central de una antropología del acto total de migrar. Abstract In this article we use Abdelmalek Sayad's conceptual "toolbox" to analyse the initiatives promoted by the Xunta de Galicia for the return of emigrants. We are particularly interested in his conceptualisations of the discourses on return as expressions of the national order and State Thought, and his conception of return as the central nucleus of an anthropology of the total act of migrating. With this article we collaborate in the dissemination of lesser-known dimensions of Sayad's thought and, at the same time, we make an original contribution to the field of return studies by considering discourses of return as instruments of national building. Resumo Com base nos resultados empíricos de algumas pesquisas etnográficas e utilizando o conceito de "dupla ausência" de Sayad, que é considerado uma chave fundamental para a interpretação da natureza transnacional das migrações, este artigo apresenta e discute heurísticamente uma visão alternativa. De fato, ele visa reconstruir analiticamente as práticas adotadas por jovens migrantes da África Subsaariana, incluindo casamento, trabalho e habitação, instanciadas tanto em seus países de origem quanto nos países de acolhimento, como uma possível manifestação de seus esforços constantes para combater os efeitos alienantes da "dupla ausência", transformando-a em "dupla presença". Abstract On the basis of the empirical findings of some ethnographic research, and drawing on Sayad’s concept of “double absence”, which is regarded as a pivotal key for the interpretation of the transnational nature of migrations, this paper heuristically introduces and discusses an alternative view. In fact, it aims to analytically reconstruct the practices put in place by young sub-Saharan migrants, including marriage, work and housing, instantiated both in their native and host countries, as a possible manifestation of their constant efforts to counter the alienating effects of “double absence”, by transforming it into “double presence”. The case-study forms part of an academic research programme which started in 2021 and is still ongoing; the ethnographic observations were carried out in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Milazzo (Messina/Sicily) and include 45 qualitative interviews that were conducted from a longitudinal perspective.
