ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the orthodontic retention protocols used by Brazilian orthodontists. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 693 orthodontists who answered a web-based questionnaire with 22 questions regarding the participants’ characteristics, their retainers’ prescriptions, follow-up duration, and appliance fabrication. Results: A 20.84% response rate was recorded. Most orthodontists reported working in private dental offices (94.7%), and female practitioners comprised 59.9% of the respondents. The mean age of the orthodontists was 41.05 years, and the mean time practicing as an orthodontist was 11.28 years. For the maxillary arch, most orthodontists (57.9%) declared to use the Hawley retainer, and for the mandibular arch, 49.1% use the bonded retainer. Regarding the retention phase duration, 85.6% recommend using a permanent retainer for the mandibular arch; and for the maxillary arch, 36.2% recommended using it for 1 to 2 years. The main reason that led orthodontists to choose a retention design was related to the initial malocclusion characteristics (72.9%), and the most mentioned explanation for choosing the retainer type and protocol was clinical experience (44.5%). Most orthodontists (85.3%) would like to have access to general guidelines/protocols for retention procedures after orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: According to the answers, retention protocols varied among Brazilian orthodontists. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os protocolos de contenção utilizados pelos ortodontistas brasileiros. Métodos: Esse estudo transversal foi composto por 693 ortodontistas que responderam a um questionário eletrônico com 22 perguntas sobre características dos respondentes, prescrição das contenções, acompanhamento das contenções e confecções dos aparelhos. Resultados: A taxa de resposta foi de 20,84%. A maioria dos ortodontistas relatou trabalhar em consultórios particulares (94,7%), e as mulheres constituíram 59,9% dos respondentes. A média de idade dos ortodontistas foi de 41,05 anos, e a média de prática como ortodontista foi de 11,28 anos. ABSTRACT Objective: This systematic review aimed to analyze the literature on changes in endogenous salivary biomarkers of pain, anxiety, stress, and inflammation related to tooth movement during orthodontic treatment of children and adolescents. Material and Methods: An electronic search was performed in nine databases to identify quasi-experimental studies, without restricting publication language and year. Two reviewers extracted the data and assessed the individual risk of bias using the JBI tools, and the certainty of evidence using the GRADE tool. Results: The electronic search found 7,038 records, of which 12 met the eligibility criteria and were included in the qualitative synthesis. Most studies had a low risk of bias. Biomarkers were grouped into five categories: electrolytes, enzymes, hormones, immunoglobulins, and mediators. Electrolytes showed decreased Ca2+, Pi3+ and K+ levels, and increased Na+ and Cl- levels. All enzymes (ALP, LDH, MMP8, and MMP9) increased over time. Hormones presented a decrease in leptin and some fluctuations in daily cortisol levels. Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, and IgE) had no significant changes, and salivary IgA showed divergent results among studies. Mediators (sRANKL, OPG, IL‐1β, and PGE2) showed fluctuations at different treatment stages, mainly after orthodontic activation. Conclusions: Based on a very low certainty level, orthodontic tooth movement had little to no effect on endogenous salivary biomarkers. RESUMO Objetivo: Esta revisão sistemática teve como objetivo analisar a literatura sobre alterações em biomarcadores salivares endógenos de dor, ansiedade, estresse e inflamação relacionados à movimentação dentária durante tratamento ortodôntico de crianças e adolescentes. Material e Métodos: Foram realizadas buscas eletrônicas em nove bases de dados para identificar estudos quase-experimentais sobre o tema, sem restrições de idioma e ano de publicação. Dois revisores extraíram os dados e avaliaram o risco individual de viés usando as ferramentas JBI, e a certeza da evidência usando a ferramenta GRADE. Resultados: A busca eletrônica encontrou 7.038 registros, dos quais 12 atenderam aos critérios de elegibilidade e foram incluídos na síntese qualitativa. A maioria dos estudos apresentou baixo risco de viés. Os biomarcadores foram agrupados em cinco categorias: eletrólitos, enzimas, hormônios, imunoglobulinas e mediadores. ABSTRACT Introduction: With the introduction of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in dentistry, precise measurements are now attainable. Objective: This study seeks to explore the correlation between incisors inclination and various lip parameters utilizing CBCT technology. Moreover, it aims to assess whether specific incisors inclinations significantly influence lip thickness, length, and position. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of available records of orthodontic patients (n=84) aged between 11 and 17.5 years old with pre- and post-treatment CBCT imaging. The 3D Slicer software was used to assess lip parameters and incisors inclinations while adhering to standard CBCT imaging methods. Statistical analysis was conducted to find associations between incisors inclination and lip parameters. Results: Within certain limits of incisor inclination, lip parameters showed minimal impact. Changes in upper incisor inclination within an average of 5° did not significantly correlate with upper lip parameters. Similarly, changes in lower incisor inclination within an average of 5.6° had no significant effect on lower lip parameters. However, inclination changes of tooth #21 within 5.4° significantly affected upper lip length within 0.35mm. Conclusions: Lip parameters remained unaffected with specific ranges of incisor inclinations, except for a slight effect on upper lip length with changes in inclination of tooth #21. ABSTRACT Introduction: The early diagnosis of mandibular asymmetry (MA) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) can contribute to its treatment. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and the extent of MA in UCLP patients at different growth stages. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of 47 UCLP patients were included, and divided into two groups (prepubertal stage and pubertal stage). The mandibular ramus height (Co-Go), mandibular body length (Go-Me), total mandibular length (Co-Me), gonial angle (CoGoMe), the volume of the mandibular condyles, and lateral chin deviation were evaluated. The cleft side (CS) and noncleft side (NCS) were compared using the paired t-test for dependent samples. Chin deviation and its possible association with specific sides were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney and Fisher’s Exact tests, respectively. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: Comparison of CS and NCS revealed that in prepubertal stage, Co-Me was shorter (105.5 ± 5.7 mm; p = 0.036) in the CS, and that in pubertal stage, Co-Go was lower (46 ± 6 mm; p= 0.004) and Go-Me was greater (78.5 ± 5.8 mm; p = 0.026) in the CS. In both growth stages, a significant association (p< 0.05) was observed between the side to which the chin has deviated and the CS. Conclusions: Although patients with UCLP in the prepubertal and pubertal stages presented significant measurements revealing MA, only Co-Go in the pubertal stage showed a clinically relevant difference. This specific result indicates that MA must be monitored during patients’ growth. RESUMO Introdução: O diagnóstico precoce da assimetria mandibular (AM) em pacientes com fissura labiopalatina unilateral (FLPU) pode contribuir para seu tratamento. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a ocorrência e a extensão da AM em pacientes com FLPU em diferentes estágios do crescimento. Métodos: Tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico de 47 pacientes com FLPU foram incluídas e divididas em dois grupos (estágio pré-puberal e estágio puberal). A altura do ramo mandibular (Co-Go), comprimento do corpo mandibular (Go-Me), comprimento mandibular total (Co-Me), ângulo goníaco (CoGoMe), volume dos côndilos mandibulares e desvio lateral do mento foram avaliados. Os lados com fissura (LCF) e sem fissura (LSF) foram comparados por meio do teste t pareado para amostras dependentes. O desvio do mento e sua possível associação com os lados foram avaliados por meio dos testes Mann-Whitney e Exato de Fisher. O nível de significância foi estabelecido em 5%. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess whether there is any difference in the genetic association between Class II division 1 (div. 1) and division 2 (div. 2) malocclusions using PAX9 (rs8004560) gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). Material and Methods: Sixty patients from the Orthodontics department of Subharti Dental College and Hospital (Meerut, India) were divided into two groups: Group 1 (Class II div. 1 malocclusion) and Group 2 (Class II div. 2 malocclusion). Then, 3 mL of blood was collected from each participant. DNA extraction was done, and Sanger Sequencing was performed from extracted DNA samples. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the distribution of alleles among Class II div. 1 and Class II div. 2 malocclusions. The homozygous GG allele was the most prevalent among Class II div. 1 patients (76.7%), while the heterozygous AG allele was the most prevalent among Class II div. 2 patients (53.5%). Since GG was the most prevalent allele, it was used as a reference, and AA/AG were compared with GG to confirm the association. The results showed that individuals with the AG genotype seemed to be more susceptible to the development of skeletal Class II div. 2 malocclusion. Conclusion: The homozygous GG allele was the most prevalent among Class II div. 1 patients, while the heterozygous AG allele was the most prevalent among Class II div. 2 patients, suggesting that there could be a difference between the genetic association of both malocclusions. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar se há alguma diferença na associação genética entre as más oclusões de Classe II divisão 1 (div. 1) e divisão 2 (div. 2), usando o polimorfismo de nucleotídeo único (SNP) do gene PAX9 (rs8004560). Material e Métodos: Sessenta pacientes do departamento de Ortodontia do Subharti Dental College and Hospital (Meerut, Índia) foram divididos em dois grupos: Grupo 1 (má oclusão de Classe II div. 1) e Grupo 2 (má oclusão de Classe II div. 2). ABSTRACT Objective: This descriptive observational study aimed to determine clinically relevant and applicable data of enamel thickness (ETH), considering the mesio-distal differences of anterior and posterior permanent teeth and their relationships. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of right-sided standardized radiographs of 34 individuals (21 females and 13 males), aged between 13 and 24 (average 16) years, with all permanent teeth intact and without crowding. Four periapical and four interproximal radiographs were obtained and digitized. ETH measurements (mesial to distal contact points at the dentin-enamel junction) were performed after correction for radiographic image magnification. The Students’ t-test was applied to the differences between paired means, with the Pearson correlation to evaluate the correlation between them. Results: The mesial and distal ETH increased from the anterior to the posterior teeth. Incisor ETH ranged between 0.60 and 0.84 mm. Canines, premolars, and molars were more than 1.0 mm thick, and molar enamel reached values between 1.26 and 1.44 mm. Conclusion: Distal ETH was significantly greater than the mesial ETH, and progressively thicker from the anterior to posterior teeth. Interproximal reduction (IPR) of the lower central and upper lateral incisors should be avoided, reduced, or performed on their distal surfaces. There is a positive and significant correlation between ETH and the mesial and distal surfaces of the teeth. Periapical radiographs and evaluation of the remaining ETH are necessary in cases of retreatment. The location and number of tooth size discrepancies should be considered in treatment planning and appropriately compensated with IPR. RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo observacional descritivo teve como objetivo determinar dados clinicamente relevantes e aplicáveis da espessura do esmalte (EES), considerando as diferenças mésiodistais dos dentes anteriores e posteriores e suas relações. Material e Métodos: A amostra consistiu em radiografias periapicais padronizadas do lado direito de 34 indivíduos, 21 do sexo feminino e 13 do sexo masculino, com idade entre 13 e 24 anos (média = 16 anos), com todos os dentes permanentes íntegros e sem apinhamento. Quatro radiografias periapicais e quatro radiografias interproximais foram tiradas e digitalizadas. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the influence of four different maxillary removable orthodontic retainers on speech. Material and Methods: Eligibility criteria for sample selection were: 20-40-year subjects with acceptable occlusion, native speakers of Portuguese. The volunteers (n=21) were divided in four groups randomized with a 1:1:1:1 allocation ratio. The four groups used, in random order, the four types of retainers full-time for 21 days each, with a washout period of 7-days. The removable maxillary retainers were: conventional wraparound, wraparound with an anterior hole, U-shaped wraparound, and thermoplastic retainer. Three volunteers were excluded. The final sample comprised 18 subjects (11 male; 7 female) with mean age of 27.08 years (SD=4.65). The speech evaluation was performed in vocal excerpts recordings made before, immediately after, and 21 days after the installation of each retainer, with auditory-perceptual and acoustic analysis of formant frequencies F1 and F2 of the vowels. Repeated measures ANOVA and Friedman with Tukey tests were used for statistical comparison. Results: Speech changes increased immediately after conventional wraparound and thermoplastic retainer installation, and reduced after 21 days, but not to normal levels. However, this increase was statistically significant only for the wraparound with anterior hole and the thermoplastic retainer. Formant frequencies of vowels were altered at initial time, and the changes remained in conventional, U-shaped and thermoplastic appliances after three weeks. Conclusions: The thermoplastic retainer was more harmful to the speech than wraparound appliances. The conventional and U-shaped retainers interfered less in speech. The three-week period was not sufficient for speech adaptation. RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar a influência na fala causada por quatro diferentes contenções ortodônticas removíveis superiores. Material e Métodos: Os critérios de elegibilidade para seleção da amostra foram: indivíduos com 20 a 40 anos de idade, com oclusão aceitável, falantes nativos de português. Os voluntários (n=21) foram divididos em quatro grupos, randomizados com proporção de alocação de 1:1:1:1. Os quatro grupos utilizaram os quatro tipos de contenção, em ordem aleatória e em período integral por 21 dias cada, com período de wash-out de sete dias. As contenções superiores removíveis foram: wraparound convencional, wraparound com orifício anterior, wraparound em U e contenção termoplástica. Três voluntários foram excluídos. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to clinically compare the accuracy of bracket positioning between three-dimensionally (3D) printed indirect bonding trays and vacuum-formed trays made over 3D-printed models. Material and Methods: Fourteen patients, planned for fixed orthodontic therapy, were randomly divided into two equal groups. For both groups, both dental arches were scanned, to acquire virtual models, brackets were virtually positioned from central incisors to second premolars, and scans for the final bracket positions were performed. In the first group, transfer trays were 3D-printed. In the second group, virtual models were 3D-printed, and vacuum-formed soft sheets were thermoformed on the printed model. Teeth were indirectly bonded and then scanned. Superimposition of the virtual and the final bracket positioning scans was performed to measure linear and angular deviations in brackets positions. Results: The first group showed significantly less occlusogingival and buccolingual linear errors than the second group. No significant differences in angular deviations were found between both groups. The frequencies of clinically acceptable linear errors within 0.5 mm and angular errors within 2° showed no statistically significant difference between both groups (p> 0.05 for all measurements). The transfer errors in both groups showed linear directional biases toward the mesial, gingival and labial directions. There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of immediate debonding between both groups (10.7% and 7.1% for the first and the second groups, respectively, p=0.295). RESUMO Objetivo: Esse estudo teve como objetivo comparar clinicamente a precisão no posicionamento de braquetes usando guias de colagem indireta impressas tridimensionalmente (3D) e guias termoformadas a vácuo em cima de modelos impressos em 3D. Material e Métodos: Quatorze pacientes, planejados para tratamento ortodôntico fixo, foram divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos de igual tamanho. Em ambos os grupos, as duas arcadas dentárias foram escaneadas para a criação dos modelos virtuais, os braquetes foram posicionados virtualmente dos incisivos centrais aos segundos pré-molares, e foram feitos os escaneamentos das posições finais dos braquetes. No primeiro grupo, as guias de transferência foram impressas em 3D. No segundo grupo, os modelos virtuais foram impressos em 3D e as guias foram termoformadas a vácuo em cima dos modelos impressos. ABSTRACT Introduction: Extraction vs. non-extraction is a crucial decision in orthodontic therapy. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in the dental arch width and buccal corridor after orthodontic treatment using extraction and non-extraction therapy with Damon self-ligating system. Material and Methods: This retrospective study consisted of 35 patients (20 female and 15 male patients with median age of 12.5 years), treated by extracting 4 or 2 premolars, and 37 patients (16 female and 21 male patients with the median age of 12.8 years), treated without premolar extraction. Both groups were treated with Damon self-ligating system. Plaster models before (T0) and after (T1) treatment were measured, and the arch width values were determined at the level of the first molars, second premolars, canines and palatal rugae. Buccal corridor width was measured using the extraoral images at T0 and T1. Paired t-test was used for the analysis of the normally distributed data, and Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney U test was used for the data with non-normal distribution. Values of p<0.05 were set as statistically significant. Results: The upper intercanine width increased significantly in both groups (p<0.01). In the non-extraction group, the arch width increased significantly in the maxillary second premolar and first molar region (p<0.01) as well as in the region of the canines (p=0.04), second premolars (p=0.01) and first molars (p<0.01) of the mandible. The buccal corridor decreased significantly in the non-extraction group (p<0.01). RESUMO Introdução: Extrair ou não extrair dentes é uma decisão crucial no tratamento ortodôntico. Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar as alterações na largura da arcada dentária e no corredor bucal após o tratamento ortodôntico com extração e o tratamento sem extração com o sistema autoligável Damon. Material e Métodos: Esse estudo retrospectivo consistiu de 35 pacientes (20 do sexo feminino e 15 do sexo masculino, com idade média de 12,5 anos), tratados com extração de 4 ou 2 pré-molares; e 37 pacientes (16 do sexo feminino e 21 do sexo masculino, com idade média de 12,8 anos), tratados sem extração de pré-molares. ABSTRACT Introduction: The removal of residual resins is a routine procedure in orthodontic clinics and of great importance to the final result of the treatment. Objective: To evaluate the main methods of residual resin removal used by orthodontists, and the main reasons for choosing these methods. Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions: 6 relating to demographic data and the other 15 relating to two methods used to remove residual resins (drills or pliers) was sent by e-mail to orthodontists registered with the Regional Councils of Dentistry of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) within April and June, 2023. Questionnaires were sent back by 153 professionals. Results: Residual resin removal is always carried out with high speed drill for 44.7% of the sample, and with low speed drill for 28.7%; 61.3% use irrigation. The multi-laminate carbide bur is used by 82.5% of orthodontists. Pliers are always used by 12.4%. Resin-removing pliers with Widia are used in 39% of cases. The use of high speed was justified by the shorter working time, and the choice of pliers was justified by the smaller damage to the tooth enamel. RESUMO Introdução: A remoção de resinas residuais é um procedimento rotineiro na clínica ortodôntica e de grande importância para o resultado final do tratamento. Objetivo: Avaliar os principais métodos para remoção de resinas residuais utilizados por ortodontistas e os principais motivos para a escolha desses métodos. Métodos: Um questionário composto por 21 perguntas: 6 relativas aos dados demográficos e 15 relativas aos métodos de remoção de resinas residuais (brocas ou alicates) foi enviado por e-mail para ortodontistas dos conselhos regionais de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro entre os meses de abril e junho de 2023, com o total de 153 respostas. Resultados: A remoção de resinas residuais é realizada sempre com brocas em alta rotação para 44,7% da amostra e em baixa rotação para 28,7%; 61,3% utilizam irrigação. A broca carbide multilaminada é utilizada por 82,5% dos ortodontistas. Os alicates são sempre utilizados por 12,4%. O alicate removedor de resina com Wídea é utilizado em 39% dos casos. O uso da alta rotação foi justificado pelo menor tempo de trabalho e a escolha por alicates, justificada pelos menores danos ao esmalte. ABSTRACT Introduction: Mandibular advancement surgery corrects bone bases while establishing patients’ functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. However, little is known about the results of this procedure in the structures that make up the stomatognathic system, as the condyles. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the structural and positional changes of mandibular condyles in ortho-surgical patients who underwent mandibular advancement surgery. Material and Methods: A prospective investigation was conducted with cone-beam computed tomography images. Using Dolphin Imaging® software, seven ortho-surgical patients with Angle Class II malocclusion and mandibular deficiency were evaluated. The images assessed were obtained at pre-surgical phase and after, at least, 1 year of the procedure. To study the structural and positional changes of condyles, linear and angular measurements were obtained, and the right and left sides of patients were compared. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed and, in order to verify possible significant differences, normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) were applied, followed by a paired t-test to define significance. Results: For all measures evaluated in this study, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusion: The ortho-surgical procedure performed did not change the structure and position of the condyles of patients who underwent surgical mandibular advancement. RESUMO Introdução: A cirurgia de avanço mandibular corrige as bases ósseas e estabelece a reabilitação funcional e estética dos pacientes. Entretanto, pouco se sabe sobre os resultados desse procedimento nas estruturas que compõem o sistema estomatognático, como os côndilos. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as alterações estruturais e posicionais dos côndilos mandibulares em pacientes ortodôntico-cirúrgicos submetidos à cirurgia de avanço mandibular. Material e Métodos: Foi realizada investigação prospectiva com imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. Utilizando o software Dolphin Imaging®, foram avaliados sete pacientes ortodôntico-cirúrgicos com má oclusão Classe II de Angle e deficiência mandibular. Foram avaliadas imagens da fase pré-cirúrgica e de, no mínimo, um ano após o procedimento. Para estudar as alterações estruturais e posicionais dos côndilos, foram obtidas medidas lineares e angulares e comparados os lados direito e esquerdo dos pacientes. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the nasopharynx and oropharynx airway dimensions of Caucasians, Blacks, Japanese, Japanese Brazilians, and Black Caucasians. Methods: A sample of 216 lateral radiographs of untreated young Brazilian subjects (mean age of 12.94 years; SD 0.88) were divided into five groups: Black Caucasian, Black, Caucasian, Japanese, and Japanese Brazilian. Lateral radiographs were used to measure the oropharynx (from the midpoint on the soft palate to the closest point on the anterior pharyngeal wall) and the nasopharynx (from the intersection of the posterior border of the tongue and the inferior border of the mandible to the closest point on the posterior pharyngeal wall). Analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test were performed (p< 0.05). Results: The linear dimension of the oropharynx was similar among the different ethnic groups. Material e métodos: Uma amostra de 216 telerradiografias laterais de jovens brasileiros não tratados (idade média de 12,94 anos; DP 0,88) foi dividida em cinco grupos: melanodermas, leucodermas, xantodermas, feodermas e nipo-brasileiros. ABSTRACT Introduction: The superimposition of 3 dimensions (3D) digital models has been increasingly used for evaluating dental changes resulting from orthodontic treatment, and different superimposition techniques have been described. Apesar de a maxila apresentar áreas de maior estabilidade para sobreposição dos modelos, como as rugas palatinas, ainda não existe um método confiável para a sobreposição da arcada inferior. Objetivo: O presente artigo tem como objetivo descrever uma técnica de sobreposição de modelos virtuais. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the insertion torque (IT), flexural strength (FS) and surface alterations between stainless steel (SS-MIs) and titanium alloy (Ti-MIs) orthodontic mini-implants. Methods: Twenty-four MIs (2 x 10 mm; SS-MIs, n = 12; Ti-MIs, n = 12) were inserted on artificial bone blocks of 20 lb/ft3 (20 PCF) and 40 lb/ft3 (40 PCF) density. The maximum IT was recorded using a digital torque meter. FS was evaluated at 2, 3 and 4 mm-deflection. Surface topography and chemical composition of MIs were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). General linear and mixed models were used to assess the effect of the MI type, bone density and deflection on the evaluated outcomes. Results: The IT of Ti-MIs was 1.1 Ncm greater than that obtained for the SS-MIs (p= 0.018). The IT for MIs inserted in 40 PCF test blocks was 5.4 Ncm greater than that for those inserted in 20 PCF test blocks (p < 0.001). SS-MIs inserted in higher density bone (40 PCF) had significantly higher flexural strength than the other groups, at 2 mm (98.7 ± 5.1 Ncm), 3 mm (112.0 ± 3.9 Ncm) and 4 mm (120.0 ± 3.4 Ncm) of deflection (p< 0.001). SEM evidenced fractures in the Ti-MIs. EDS revealed incorporation of 18% of C and 2.06% of O in the loaded SS-MIs, and 3.91% of C in the loaded Ti-MIs. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this in vitro study, it seems that SS-MIs offer sufficient stability and exhibit greater mechanical strength, compared to Ti-MIs when inserted into higher density bone. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o torque de inserção (TI), a resistência flexural (RF) e as alterações de superfície em mini-implantes ortodônticos de aço inoxidável (MIs-Ai) e de liga de titânio (MIs-Ti). Métodos: Vinte e quatro MIs (2 x 10 mm; MIs-Ai, n = 12; MIs-Ti, n = 12) foram inseridos em blocos de osso artificial de densidades de 20 lb/ft3 (20 PCF) e 40 lb/ft3 (40 PCF). O torque máximo de inserção foi registrado por meio de um torquímetro digital. A resistência flexural foi avaliada nas deflexões de 2, 3 e 4 mm. Topografia de superfície e composição química dos MIs foram avaliadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios X (EDS). Modelos lineares gerais e mistos foram utilizados para avaliar o efeito do tipo de MI, da densidade óssea e da deflexão nos desfechos avaliados. Resultados: O TI dos MIs-Ti foi 1,1 Ncm maior do que o obtido para os MIs-Ai (P = 0,018). O TI para MIs inseridos em blocos de teste de 40 PCF foi 5,4 Ncm maior do que para aqueles inseridos em blocos de teste 20 PCF (p < 0,001). MIs-Ai inseridos em osso de maior densidade (40 PCF) apresentaram resistência flexural significativamente maior do que outros grupos, em deflexões de 2 mm (98,7 ± 5,1 Ncm), 3 mm (112,0 ± 3,9 Ncm) e 4 mm (120,0 ± 3,4 Ncm) (p < 0,001). ABSTRACT Objective: This retrospective study aimed to assess the predictability of Invisalign® aligners regarding rotational, mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip movements. Methods: Two materials were included in the analysis - EX30, used until 2013; and SmartTrack, in current use. The study comprised 56 adult patients treated with Invisalign Comprehensive. Data sample were assessed on three sets of digital models; model 1 - initial, model 2 - predicted, and model 3 - achieved. Sixty reference points were marked in each dental arch, and two reference planes assisted the superimposition. The degree of rotation, mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip was obtained via trigonometric calculations, through a previously published validated method. The accuracy of outcomes was compared according to the types of tooth movement and teeth groups,and the influence of predetermined variables on movement accuracy was also investigated. Results: Rotation and mesio-distal tip did not present any significant difference when comparing EX30 and SmartTrack groups. Only buccal-lingual tip presented a significant difference, incisor and canine groups treated with EX30 aligners presented an increase in accuracy (p= 0.007 and p = 0.007, respectively). For each additional degree planned for rotation movements, there was an increase of 0.35° in the discrepancy, and an increase of 0.40° and 0.41° for mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip, respectively. EX30 and SmartTrack discrepancies were compared by multilevel linear regression. Conclusion: EX30 aligners reached higher accuracy for buccal-lingual tip in anterior teeth. However, for rotation and mesio-distal tip, SmartTrack and EX30 are similarly accurate. The total amount of planned movement has a significant impact on accuracy rates, with a decrease in accuracy for every additional degree. RESUMO Objetivo: Esse estudo retrospectivo teve como objetivo aferir a previsibilidade dos alinhadores Invisalign em relação aos movimentos de rotação e inclinações mesiodistal e vestibulolingual. Material e Métodos: Foram incluídos dois materiais nessa análise: EX30®, utilizado até 2013; e SmartTrack®, atualmente em uso. Esse estudo avaliou 56 pacientes tratados com Invisalign Comprehensive. Os dados foram avaliados em três pares de modelos digitais; modelo 1 - inicial, modelo 2 - planejado, e modelo 3 - alcançado. Foram marcados 60 pontos de referência em cada arcada, sendo a sobreposição realizada com auxílio de planos de referência. O grau de rotação e inclinações mesiodistal e vestibulolingual foi obtido por cálculos de trigonometria, usando um método validado publicado anteriormente. Os resultados foram comparados de acordo com os tipos de movimento dentário e grupos de dentes, também foi investigada a influência de variáveis predeterminadas na confiabilidade dos movimentos. Resultados: Os movimentos de rotação e inclinação mesiodistal não apresentaram diferença estatística, quando comparados os grupos EX30® e SmartTrack®.
