ABSTRACT The use of biosynthesized nanoparticles is one of the broad research areas where silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have anti-parasitic disease properties. The biological synthesis of silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles using methanolic extracts of the Indigofera oblongifolia leaf was evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, total of phenolics, and flavonoids, and MTT assay were used. RESUMO O uso de nanopartículas biossintetizadas é uma das amplas áreas de pesquisa em que as nanopartículas de prata (AgNPs) têm propriedades antiparasitárias. A síntese biológica de nanopartículas de prata (AgNPs) usando extratos metanólicos da folha de Indigofera oblongifolia foi avaliada. Foram utilizadas análises de cromatografia gasosa e espectrometria de massa (GC-MS), total de fenólicos e flavonoides, e ensaio MTT. RESUMO Este estudo avaliou o uso de óleos essenciais (OE) de alecrim (Lippia sidoides) (OELS), capim-limão (Cymbopogon flexuosus) (OECF) e zinziba (Lippia javanica) (OELJ) para sedação e anestesia de acará-bandeira (Pterophyllum scalare). Uma concentração de 10 µL L-1 de todos os OE causou sedação. A concentração ideal para anestesia de OOLS foi de 100 µL L-1, enquanto para OECF foi de 500 µL L-1. OELJ não alcançou tempos ideais de anestesia mesmo com 500 µL L-1. Todos os OE testados foram efetivos, sem causar mortalidade por até 72h após os experimentos. RESUMO O Brasil possui mais de 1.800 espécies de aves catalogadas. Quando mantidos em cativeiro, esses animais podem ser susceptíveis a vários tipos de patógenos, inclusive como parasitos gastrointestinais. No entanto, a falta de informações sobre os principais tipos de parasitos que infectam esses animais e as relações parasito-hospedeiro acabam sendo fatores limitantes na manutenção da saúde dessas aves. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o levantamento de helmintos e protozoários de aves exóticas e silvestres cativas da região Nordeste do Brasil. Para isso, amostras fecais (n = 182 pools) foram coletadas de 656 aves em cativeiro, pertencentes a 9 ordens e a 53 espécies. As análises parasitológicas foram realizadas por técnicas de Mini-FLOTAC®, flotação em sacarose, exame direto e coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen, além da sedimentação por centrifugação. Todos os dados foram analisados usando o software InStat, com um nível de significância definido em P<0,05. Parasitos gastrointestinais foram encontrados em 84,07% (153/182; P<0,0001) das amostras analisadas. Foram identificados 18 tipos de parasitos, sendo os enteroparasitos o mais frequentes: Cryptosporidium sp. (52,28%; P= 0,008), coccídeos não esporulados (41,17%; P= 0,0001), Entamoeba sp. ABSTRACT Chemical acaricides are used as the primary method for controlling Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. However, the incorrect use of these compounds over the years has led to the emergence of resistant tick populations. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different combinations of synthetic acaricides and the essential oil of Plectranthus amboinicus on engorged females of R. (B.) microplus. Engorged females were obtained from infested bovines in dairy farms in the Agreste mesoregion of Pernambuco, Brazil. Five different combinations of commercial synthetic acaricides: I) Chlorpyrifos 30.0g + Cypermethrin 15.0g + Fenthion 15.0g; II) Chlorpyrifos 8.5g + Cypermethrin 15.0g + Ethion 16.0g; III) Deltamethrin 50.0g; IV) Amitraz 12.5g; V) Chlorpyrifos 15.0g + Cypermethrin 25.0g + Piperonyl butoxide 50.0g, and the 1% essential oil of P. amboinicus were used for the Adult Immersion Test. The findings of this study demonstrate that ticks’ resistant populations are present in the study area, and the essential oil of P. amboinicus is a promising compound for developing products used for tick control. RESUMO Os acaricidas químicos são utilizados como o principal método para controlar Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. No entanto, o uso incorreto desses compostos ao longo dos anos levou ao surgimento de populações de carrapatos resistentes. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar in vitro a eficácia de diferentes combinações de acaricidas sintéticos e do óleo essencial de Plectranthus amboinicus em fêmeas ingurgitadas de R. (B.) microplus. Fêmeas ingurgitadas foram obtidas de bovinos infestados, criados em fazendas leiteiras localizadas na mesorregião do Agreste do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. ABSTRACT The island of Fernando de Noronha, belonging to the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, has several animal species introduced by man, such as the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the domestic cat (Felis catus), representing a risk to the ecological balance of the island and to the public health. This study aimed to report the occurrence of Strobilocercus fasciolaris in black rats (R. rattus) in this insular environment and to contribute with epidemiological data on this parasitosis. Rodents were captured using Tomahawk traps and sedated with an association of Ketamine Hydrochloride (40mg/kg/IM) and Xylazine Hydrochloride (2mg/kg/IM) for subsequent euthanasia and necroscopic evaluation. Of the 154 captured black rats, 54 (35.06%) had single or multiple cysts in the liver. The cysts were morphologically evaluated and the metacestodes were identified as Strobilocercus fasciolaris, the larval form of Hydatigera taeniformis. This is the first report of the occurrence of Strobilocercus fasciolaris in black rats (Rattus rattus) in an island environment in Brazil. The occurrence of this metacestode in rodents on the Island demonstrates the high environmental contamination, fast reproduction, and dispersion of this parasite, being a potential risk for the conservation of susceptible species and for public health. RESUMO A Ilha de Fernando de Noronha, pertencente ao estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, possui diversas espécies animais introduzidas pelo homem, como o rato-preto (Rattus rattus) e o gato-doméstico (Felis catus), representando um risco ao equilíbrio ecológico da Ilha e à saúde pública. Objetivou-se relatar a ocorrência de Strobilocercus fasciolaris em ratos-pretos (R. rattus) nesse ambiente insular e contribuir com dados epidemiológicos sobre essa parasitose. Os roedores foram capturados utilizando-se armadilhas do tipo Tomahawk, sedados com uma associação de cloridrato de cetamina (40mg/kg/IM) e de cloridrato de xilazina (2mg/kg/IM) para posterior eutanásia e avaliação necroscópica. Dos 154 ratos-pretos capturados, 54 (35,06%) apresentavam cistos únicos ou múltiplos no fígado. ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the physiological parameters, the biomass flow, and the productive characteristics of the grasses BRS Piatã and BRS Paiaguás at different levels of water supply in the semi-arid region. The experiment was carried out in the dry season, in Sobral, Ceará State, Brazil. The following irrigation depths were used: 30, 60, 90, and 120% of ETo. The experiment was carried out in pots with a capacity of 7.5 dm3 at field level, using a 0-0.2m layer of argisol soil as substrate. As a result, the photosynthetic rate was not affected in the largest water treatments. In the biomass flow, the responses of grasses to treatments 90 and 120% of ETo were similar for the variables number of live leaves and phyllochron. RESUMO Objetivou-se, por meio deste estudo, avaliar os parâmetros fisiológicos, o fluxo de biomassa e as características produtivas das gramíneas BRS Piatã e BRS Paiaguás em diferentes níveis de irrigação no semiárido. O experimento foi realizado no período seco, em Sobral (3°45'00,77'' S e 40°20ꞌ38,55ꞌꞌ W), Ceará, Brasil. Foram utilizadas as seguintes lâminas de irrigação: 30; 60; 90 e 120% da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4x2 (lâminas de irrigação x gramíneas). O experimento foi realizado em vasos com capacidade de 7,5 dm3 em nível de campo, utilizando-se como substrato uma camada de 0-0,2 m de solo argissolo. Como resultado, os parâmetros fisiológicos das gramíneas, como a taxa fotossintética, não foram afetados nos maiores tratamentos hídricos (90 e 120% ETo). No fluxo de biomassa, as respostas das gramíneas aos tratamentos, 90 e 120% da ETo, foram semelhantes para as variáveis número de folhas vivas e filocrono. ABSTRACT Sixty adrenals of 30 dogs were evaluated, divided into three groups, according to age: Group 1 = healthy youngsters (10 animals) - from one to three years old; Group 2 = healthy adults (10 animals) - four to nine years old; and Group 3 = healthy senile animals (10 animals) - older than ten years old. The experimental design was randomized, with a significance of 5%. There was a significant difference (P=0.017) in length between young and elderly dogs. RESUMO Foram avaliadas 60 adrenais de 30 cães, divididos em três grupos, de acordo com a idade: grupo 1 = jovens saudáveis (10 animais) - de um a três anos de vida; grupo 2 = adultos saudáveis (10 animais) - de quatro a nove anos de vida; e grupo 3 = senis saudáveis (10 animais) - a partir de 10 anos de vida. ABSTRACT The intussusception of the large intestine in adult horses has been poorly reported. The aim of this study is to report a case of an acute abdomen due to cecocolic intussusception in a Brazilian Sport Horse mare, aged eight, after the administration of imidocarb dipropionate. The drug used for the treatment of piroplasmosis caused a state of dysmotility in the large intestine and subsequent abdominal discomfort. ABSTRACT The guinea pig is a South American rodent with a docile behavior that has been gaining popularity as a pet, increasing the search for specialized veterinary care for the species. In the clinical casuistry, about half of the visits are due to dermatological changes, among which fungal infections are uncommon. Sporotrichosis is a zoonosis caused by the fungus of the genus Sporothrix, widely distributed in nature, which contaminates the host from the inoculation of the agent in lesions and mucous membranes and has been reported in several species of animals. Felines with access to the street are the main disseminators of the agent due to the behaviors of the species and can contaminate other animals and humans. The most evident clinical signs are crusted, exudative and difficult to heal lesions, requiring complementary tests such as PCR and culture to confirm the diagnosis. The specific treatment is time-consuming, using antifungal drugs such as itraconazole, which can be associated with topical treatment to aid healing. Na casuística clínica, cerca da metade dos atendimentos ocorre em razão de alterações dermatológicas, entre as quais são comuns as infecções fúngicas. A esporotricose é uma zoonose causada pelo fungo do gênero Sporothrix, distribuído amplamente na natureza, que contamina o hospedeiro a partir da inoculação do agente em lesões e mucosas e foi relatado em várias espécies de animais. Felinos com acesso à rua são os principais disseminadores do agente devido aos comportamentos da espécie, podendo contaminar outros animais e os seres humanos. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in the diet of Sardinella brasiliensis on their hematological parameters. A total of 375 fish were distributed in 15 experimental units to evaluate the effects of the diet on their blood for 45 days. The levels of n-3 PUFA added in the diet were 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2% of the lipid fraction. These values represent the total percentage of n-3 PUFA in the lipid fraction of the diet, and 0% n-3 PUFA was used as the negative control. Five fish from each experimental unit were sampled at the end of the experiment for hematological analysis, and the parameters measured include the total number of erythrocytes, hematocrit percentage, hemoglobin and glucose concentration and differential leukocyte count. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de ácidos graxos poli-insaturados ômega-3 (PUFA n-3) na dieta de Sardinella brasiliensis sobre seus parâmetros hematológicos. Um total de 375 peixes foi distribuído em 15 unidades experimentais para avaliar os efeitos da dieta em seu sangue durante 45 dias. Os níveis de PUFA n-3 adicionados à dieta foram 0, 0,3, 0,6, 0,9 e 1,2% da fração lipídica. Esses valores representam a porcentagem total de PUFA n-3 na fração lipídica da dieta, e 0% de PUFA n-3 foi usado como controle negativo. ABSTRACT The production of Minas Artesanal Cheese (MAC) is a centuries-old activity that involves a great deal of physical effort on the part of the producer, especially during the pressing stage, which is carried out by hand. Inspection agencies do not allow manual stainless-steel presses in MAC production. Studies are still needed to prove whether this technique changes the cheese characteristics. Therefore, this study tested two types of MAC production in the Campo das Vertentes region: traditional hand pressing and a new technology, a stainless-steel press. RESUMO A produção do Queijo Minas Artesanal (QMA) é uma atividade secular que envolve grande esforço físico do produtor, principalmente na etapa de prensagem, que é realizada com as mãos. Os órgãos fiscalizadores não permitem o uso de prensas manuais de inox na produção de QMA. Ainda não há estudos que comprovem se o uso dessa técnica modifica as características do queijo. Assim, no presente estudo, foram testados dois tipos de fabricação de QMA da região do Campo das Vertentes: utilizando-se a prensagem tradicional com as mãos e uma nova tecnologia, com a prensagem em prensa de aço inoxidável. Após a fabricação dos queijos, foram feitas análises de composição físico-química, microbiológicas e de perfil de textura e cor instrumental, ao longo de quatro tempos de maturação (7, 14, 22, 30 dias) para se verificar se o tipo de prensagem interfere nas características do QMA da região do Campo das Vertentes-MG. ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of topical HoofCare® in the treatment of digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy cows. Thirty-six high-yielding Holstein cows with DD in at least one limb were included and randomly divided into two groups, making 42 limbs. The alternating treatment group consisted of 21 limbs treated for three alternating days every 48h, and the continuous treatment group consisted of 21 limbs treated every 24h for five days. The cows underwent lameness examination, thermographic analysis, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the lesions on D0 (time of identification of the lesion and prior to treatment), D4 (fourth day of treatment), and D10 (five days after the end of treatment). RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a eficácia do HoofCare® tópico no tratamento da dermatite digital (DD) em vacas leiteiras. Trinta e seis vacas Holandesas de alto rendimento, com DD em pelo menos um dos membros, foram incluídas e divididas aleatoriamente em dois grupos, totalizando 42 membros. O grupo de tratamento alternado consistiu de 21 membros tratados por três dias alternados, a cada 48 horas, e o grupo de tratamento contínuo consistiu de 21 membros tratados a cada 24 horas, por cinco dias. ABSTRACT The occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Ehrlichia canis and Babesia vogeli in dogs from the municipality of Cândido Sales, Bahia, was investigated. Total and peripheral blood samples were obtained from 131 dogs. Blood smears were performed to check for morulae. Toxoplasma gondii and N. caninum infections were determined by an Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction. Nested-PCR and PCR were used for the diagnoses of E. canis and B. vogeli infections, respectively. Additionally, the risk factors associated with infection by these agents were analyzed. The frequency of infection was 70.2% for N. caninum, 67.9% for T. gondii and 37.4% for E. canis. None of the dogs tested positive for B. vogeli. Morulae of Ehrlichia spp. were identified in two animals and the piroplasm in one animal. Age (> 3 years) was considered a risk factor for infections by E. canis and N. caninum and the rural habitat for infections by N. caninum. Co-infections were frequent, mainly with N. caninum and T. gondii (45.03% of dogs). Ehrlichia canis infection was significantly associated with N. caninum and T. gondii infection. RESUMO Avaliou-se a ocorrência de infecções por Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Ehrlichia canis e Babesia vogeli em cães do município de Cândido Sales - BA. Para isso, foram obtidas amostras de sangue total e periférico de 131 cães. Esfregaços sanguíneos foram confeccionados para verificação de mórulas. Infecções por T. gondii e N. caninum foram determinadas pela reação de imunofluorescência indireta. O diagnóstico das infecções por E. canis e B. vogeli foi feito por meio de Nested-PCR e PCR, respectivamente. Adicionalmente, foram analisados os fatores de risco associados à infecção por esses agentes. ABSTRACT This research aimed to carry out an epidemiological investigation of dogs with canine leishmaniasis in an area of Rio Grande do Sul with no history of notification of the disease. Leishmaniasis is considered an endemic zoonosis in different countries. In Brazil, it occurs mainly in the Southeast and Midwest regions, having drastically increased the number of notifications in recent years. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there are reports of the disease in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre and in the border region in the west of the state, as well as in the central region. The investigation was conducted in 100 dogs from the municipalities of Frederico Westphalen and region. Whole blood was collected for immunochromatographic testing (TR DPP® Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis) and lymph node aspiration. RESUMO Esta pesquisa objetivou realizar uma investigação de cães com leishmaniose canina, em uma área do Rio Grande do Sul, sem histórico de notificação da doença. A leishmaniose é considerada uma zoonose endêmica em diferentes países. No Brasil, ocorre principalmente nas regiões Sudeste e Centro-Oeste, tendo aumentado drasticamente o número de notificações nos últimos anos. No estado do Rio Grande do Sul, existem relatos da doença na região metropolitana de Porto Alegre e na região de fronteira no oeste do estado, bem como na região central. A investigação ocorreu em 100 cães, provenientes de municípios de Frederico Westphalen e região. Foram colhidos sangue total para realização de teste imunocromatográfico (TR DPP® Leishmaniose Visceral Canina) e punção aspirativa de linfonodo. Os positivos foram confirmados por meio do teste ELISA e do teste de imunofluorescência indireta com diluição total ou imuno-histoquímica após biopsia cutânea. Foram diagnosticados dois animais com leishmaniose visceral, sendo considerados os primeiros relatos de caso da doença canina na região, portanto torna-se necessária a pesquisa e o controle de potencial presença de flebotomíneos na região.
