Abstract Improving rural innovation processes requires optimizing the link between agricultural research and rural extension. Most of the authors who have studied this link have been concerned with highlighting the need for a synergetic integration between both components. However, those studies did not make explicit which are the key factors that facilitate this articulation along with the proposals to promote a harmonious and efficient link. The present work identifies and systematizes on the literature about the subject the key factors for a good link and the proposals and approaches for linking research and extension. For this, a systematic review of the literature in English, Spanish and Portuguese was performed. As results, on the one hand, two types of key factors were identified: contextual-institutional and subjective-relational; and, on the other hand, two types of proposals aimed at strengthening the bond were characterized: structural/formal mechanisms (or institutional arrangements) and operational or functional management measures. Resumen La mejora en los procesos de innovación rural requiere optimizar el vínculo entre la investigación agropecuaria y la extensión rural. La mayoría de los autores que han estudiado dicho vínculo se han ocupado de resaltar la necesidad de una integración sinérgica entre ambos componentes. Sin embargo, estos estudios no han explicitado cuáles son los factores claves que facilitan dicha articulación junto con las propuestas para promover un vínculo armónico y eficiente. Abstract This study assesses the vulnerability of Latin American economies, measured by GDP per capita, to precipitation and temperature fluctuations, in order to estimate how these countries are affected by climatic conditions. The Differentiated Generalized Moments Method (DIF-GMM) was used to verify the influence of climatic variables, together with economic indicators, on the level of economic activity. The results indicated that precipitation extremes, as measured by the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), are the dominant climatic influences on economic growth and that the effects are significant and negative. Abstract: This article is an ethnography of the peasant ranch (sítio) as classified by Capuxu children, inhabitants of the hinterlands of the Brazilian state of Paraíba. Through participant observation, informal conversations, and the drawings produced by children, they revealed classifications of the ranch that blur the classic house/garden dichotomy established by rural studies (Woortman, 1983; Heredia, 1988; Santos, 1984; Garcia Junior, 1983; Godoi, 1999), revealing the triptych of houses, roads (and their shortcuts), and enclosures. In this sense, this article contributes to childhood studies and the anthropology of children, as well as to peasant studies in Brazil. Resumo: Este artigo é uma etnografia do Sítio camponês a partir das classificações das crianças Capuxu, do sertão da Paraíba. Por meio da observação participante, das conversas informais e dos desenhos por elas produzidos, as crianças revelaram classificações do Sítio que diluem a clássica dicotomia casa/roçado formatada pelos estudos do rural (Woortman, 1983; Heredia, 1988; Garcia Junior, 1983, Godoi, 1999) apresentando a trilogia: casas, estradas (e seus atalhos) e cercados. Abstract: The milpa landscape is a territory where there is a close relationship between the Mayan populations and the forest manifested in agroecosystem management strategies such as: the milpa, the home garden and the secondary vegetation. The milpa landscape faces multiple socio-environmental pressures that require transdisciplinary analytical frameworks that allow its comprehensive understanding. The objective of this work is to analyze through variables that allow us to deepen into the socioecological relationships established by the human and biophysical components of southern Yucatán. The framework of socio-ecological systems was used, for its operationalization secondary information was reviewed and 257 surveys were applied in two municipalities. The results show that socioecological relationships are influenced by aspects of governance and land tenure. The milpa system prevails in livelihoods, but coexists with factors such as the loss of the Mayan language, the low generational change, the market economy, the high prevalence of agrochemicals and weather patterns. It is proposed that efforts based on the revaluation of the milpa, the participatory integration of knowledge and the development of adaptive governance schemes could have positive repercussions on sustainability if this biocultural landscape. Resumen: El paisaje milpa es un territorio con una marcada relación entre las poblaciones mayas y las selvas que se manifiestan en estrategias de manejo de los agroecosistemas locales: la milpa, el huerto familiar y la vegetación secundaria. El paisaje milpa enfrenta múltiples presiones socioambientales que requieren de marcos analíticos transdiciplinarios que permitan su comprensión integral. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar en las interacciones que establecen los componentes humanos y biofísicos. Se utilizó el marco de sistemas socioecológicos, para su operacionalización se revisó información secundaria y se aplicaron 257 encuestas en dos municipios. Los resultados muestran que las relaciones socioecológicas son influenciadas por aspectos de gobernanza y la tenencia de la tierra. El sistema milpa prevalece en los medios de vida, pero coexistiendo con factores que amenazan su estabilidad como la pérdida de la lengua maya, el bajo relevo generacional, la economía de mercado, el alto empleo de agroquímicos y los patrones climáticos. Abstract: This article aimed to understand how governance structures and the search for value protection influence transaction costs in the relationship between dairy producers and processors in Paraná, Brazil. These aspects are treated by Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) and by Measurement Cost Economics (MCE). For data collection, 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted and Content Analysis was used for data treatment and results analysis. For the theory, the study contributed demonstrating that although the alignment between transaction attributes and governance structures contribute for value protection as proposed by TCE, in the absence of complete information, this alignment is still not enough to guarantee economic rights, as predicted by MCE. Empirically, it contributed suggesting the use of formal contracts and the importance of formal information available to milk producers and processors to improve their results in the activity. Thus, considering the governance structures in Paraná’s dairy AGS, it is predicted that even if the hybrid structure is adequate, under TCE view, due to its alignment with transaction attributes, MCE concepts help to explain why agents still need guarantee mechanisms. Resumo: O objetivo do artigo foi compreender como as estruturas de governança e a busca pela proteção do valor influenciam nos custos de transação na relação entre produtores e processadores de leite no Paraná. Esses aspectos são tratados pela Economia dos Custos de Transação (ECT) e pela Economia dos Custos de Mensuração (ECM). Para a coleta de dados, foram realizadas 30 entrevistas semiestruturadas e os mesmos foram tratados pela Análise de Conteúdo. Para a teoria, o estudo contribuiu demonstrando que, embora o alinhamento entre atributos da transação e estruturas de governança contribuam para a proteção de valor, conforme se espera pela ECT, na ausência de informações completas, esse alinhamento não é suficiente para garantir direitos econômicos, como previsto pela ECM. Empiricamente, o estudo contribuiu sugerindo o uso de contratos formais e a importância da distribuição de informações formalizadas aos produtores e processadores de leite, a fim de que melhorem seus resultados na atividade. Abstract Brazilian agribusiness is continuously seeking new technologies and arable areas for expansion. Often, the expansion often occurs without proper planning and integration with logistic system actors, especially in agricultural frontier regions like the MATOPIBA region. To improve investment decision-making, it is essential to plan the location of new bulk warehouses. This planning can facilitate a virtuous process that incorporates intermodality and environmental preservation aspects. The objective of this article is to evaluate whether a combination of locational criteria that consider environmental and intermodality aspects can identify the most suitable regions for the installation of subterminal warehouses. The methodology combines Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and geoprocessing techniques. The application of the method allowed ranking the candidate regions for the installation of warehouses. The results indicated three large areas suitable for the grain storage that together represent 12% of the study area. The conclusion of the research was that, in addition to economic aspects, the inclusion of environmental and logistics factors in the spatial location analysis promotes a more sustainable storage network, with well-positioned warehouses and less competition. Muitas vezes, a expansão das áreas agrícolas ocorre sem planejamento integrado com os atores do sistema logístico, especialmente em regiões de fronteira agrícola, como a região do MATOPIBA. O planejamento da localização de novos armazéns graneleiros contribui para a melhoria do processo de tomada de decisão para investimentos. Além disso, possibilita um processo virtuoso que permite a incorporação de aspectos para fomentar a intermodalidade e a preservação ambiental. Assim, o objetivo deste artigo é avaliar se uma combinação de critérios locacionais que considerem aspectos ambientais e de intermodalidade pode identificar regiões mais adequadas para a instalação de armazéns graneleiros do tipo subterminal. A metodologia utilizada agrega a Análise Hierárquica de Processos (AHP) e técnicas de geoprocessamento. A aplicação dos métodos permitiu classificar as regiões candidatas para a instalação de armazéns. Summary The co-evolution of plants, environment and cultures makes possible the existence of plant varieties known as landraces. Dynamically conserved by farmers, landraces constitute identity elements of the productive communities in which they are maintained to satisfy nutritional, medicinal, and cultural needs, among others. This study provides empirical evidence for the understanding of cultural processes and traditional knowledge associated with the cultivation of native varieties, developed and shared by family farmers in three Uruguayan towns, in a context of homogenization of agrodiversity. Based on the analysis of interviews and observation, results indicate that there are productive as well as affective and emotional reasons for in situ conservation of many native varieties integrated into production systems and worlds of life of two types of farmers: traditional and neo-rural. Resumen La co-evolución de plantas, ambientes y culturas hace posible la existencia de variedades vegetales denominadas criollas. Conservadas de forma dinámica por agricultores, constituyen elementos identitarios de las comunidades productivas en las que son mantenidas para satisfacer necesidades alimenticias, medicinales, culturales, entre otras. Esta investigación aporta evidencias empíricas para la comprensión de los procesos culturales y conocimientos tradicionales asociados al cultivo de variedades criollas, desarrollados y compartidos por agricultores familiares en tres localidades uruguayas, en un contexto de homogeneización de la agrodiversidad. Abstract Identifying the basic competencies that a professional should possess to fulfill his or her role as an extensionist is important, since it favors the connection with the communities being accompanied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the level of perception of the development of competencies of the extensionists, by means of an instrument designed by the authors, on a scale from one (critical situation) to five (optimal situation) using a rubric defined for each competency. Abstract This research is particularly interested in identifying the motivation and strategic resources that support the expansion project of a credit union located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul to the state of Minas Gerais. Data collection was carried out with Directors and Managers who led the expansion process, who answered the questionnaire elaborated in the light of the literature, and the data analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The data showed that the motivation for expansion was supported by the possibility of increasing the area of operation, brand expansion, diversification and increased operational safety; location factors included the use of municipal economic and demographic indices, similarity of areas of operation. Strategic resources, for the most part, denote competitive parity, standing out as sustainable the level of trust, fundraising and computerized systems, considering that intangible resources are more difficult to be imitated by competitors than tangible ones. Resumo Esta pesquisa tem interesse particular de identificar a motivação e os recursos estratégicos que suportam o projeto de expansão de uma cooperativa de crédito localizada no estado do Rio Grande do Sul para o estado de Minas Gerais. Foi realizada coleta de dados com Diretores e Gerentes que lideraram o processo de expansão, os quais responderam ao questionário elaborado à luz da literatura, e os dados analisados quantitativa e qualitativamente. Abstract This article evaluated the effect of soybean cultivation on the level of socioeconomic development and economic growth of the Brazilian AMC's (Minimum Comparable Areas), between the years 1991 and 2010. For this, the models Differences in Differences with Propensity Score were estimated. (DDM), evaluating the impact of “being a soybean producer” on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and on the dimensions of the Municipal Human Development Index (HDI-M). The results showed that soybean production did not impact the global HDI-M, with a positive effect only on the HDI - knowledge. In the case of the longevity dimension, a negative impact was identified, possibly due to the intensive use of pesticides, which affects the health of rural workers and residents of nearby locations. Resumo Este artigo avalia o efeito do cultivo da soja sobre o nível de desenvolvimento socioeconômico e do crescimento econômico das AMC’s (Áreas Mínimas Comparáveis) brasileiras, entre os anos de 1991 e 2010. Para isso, foram estimados os modelos Diferenças em Diferenças com Escore de Propensão (DDM), avaliando o impacto de ser produtor de soja no Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) per capita e nas dimensões do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal (IDH-M). Os resultados demonstraram que a produção de soja não impactou o IDH-M global, apresentando efeito positivo apenas no IDHM-conhecimento. No caso da dimensão longevidade, identificou-se um impacto negativo, possivelmente em decorrência do uso intensivo de agrotóxicos, que afeta a saúde dos trabalhadores rurais e moradores de localidades próximas. Abstract The present research aimed to identify the intentions and perspectives of young women students of the courses of agricultural sciences and related areas of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Sul, in Campus Sertão. The article focused on the discussion of gender, seeking to fill a gap in studies on succession, as it is a dimension that has been little examined. A total of 386 young rural women, students of agricultural science courses, participated in the research, who answered a closed questionnaire, prepared with responses on a Likert scale of 5 points. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed in the PSPP (Program for Statistical Analysis of Sampled Data) program with descriptive analysis and Chi-Square test. The results showed that young women find an unfavorable family environment to be successors, especially because they receive less encouragement from their parents, especially mothers, to remain in the countryside and be successors and have less opportunity to participate in the operational and managerial activities of the property. Consequently, these young women have less interest in being managers and successors of their parents' rural property. Resumo A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar as intenções e perspectivas acerca da sucessão familiar das jovens mulheres estudantes dos cursos das ciências agrárias e áreas afins do Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS), no Campus Sertão. O artigo focou na discussão de gênero, buscando suprir uma lacuna em estudos sobre sucessão, já que é uma dimensão pouco examinada. Participaram da pesquisa 386 jovens mulheres rurais estudantes de cursos das ciências agrárias, as quais responderam um questionário fechado, elaborado com respostas em escala Likert de 5 pontos. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados estatisticamente no Programa para Análise Estatística de Dados Amostrados (PSPP), com análises descritiva e teste Chi-Square. Abstract This paper studied the behavior of multidimensional and income poverty, as well as its determinants in Brazil, in addition to rural and urban areas, based on information from the 2019 National Continuous Household Sample Survey (PNADC). The Alkire-Foster methodology was used in the construction of a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), in addition to the logit model to estimate the impacts of determinants related to household characteristics on poverty. The health and sanitation dimension was the one that contributed the most to the MPI, followed by the education and housing dimensions. Unidimensional poverty was greater than multidimensional and rural poverty was also greater. Among the determinants of poverty, being in households with non-white heads, younger, unmarried, unemployed, less educated and in the North and Northeast regions increased the chances of poverty. Resumo Este trabalho estudou o comportamento da pobreza multidimensional e de renda, bem como seus determinantes no Brasil, evidenciando as diferenças entre as áreas rurais e urbanas com base nas informações das Pesquisas Nacionais por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua (PNADC) de 2019. Foi utilizada a metodologia Alkire-Foster na construção de um Índice de Pobreza Multidimensional (IPM), além do modelo logit para estimar os impactos na pobreza de determinantes relacionados a características domiciliares. A dimensão saúde e saneamento foi a que mais contribuiu com o IPM, seguida da dimensão educação e condições habitacionais. A pobreza unidimensional foi maior do que a multidimensional, além disso, a pobreza nas áreas rurais foi também maior. Abstract: The Covid19 disease, resulting from contamination by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, impacted on the economy, especially in the agricultural sector, which has become more susceptible to these impacts through the rise in costs that are not easily perceived. This study aims to analyze the impact on input acquisition costs, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, in small family farms, from the perspective of the Total Cost Ownership (TCO) methodology. The methodology used in this research was a case study in 12 family farms, located in the southern region of Brazil, with data collected from April 2017 to March 2020. Four inputs common to all properties were analyzed. The results showed that there was an increase of 39.47% in the acquisition costs of inputs and a weighted average increase of 34.7%, which had a negative impact on the monetary result of family properties. It was concluded that the properties were affected by the effects of the pandemic with regard to the purchase of inputs, mainly with an increase in acquisition costs, due to the shortage of essential supplies for the basic operations of small rural properties. Resumo: A doença Covid19, resultante da contaminação pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2, causou efeitos na economia, sobretudo no setor agrícola, que se tornou mais suscetível à elevação de custos não percebidos facilmente. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar o impacto nos custos de aquisição de insumos, ocasionados pela pandemia do Covid-19, em pequenas propriedades rurais familiares, sob a ótica da metodologia Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). A metodologia empregada nesta investigação foi a do estudo de caso genérico em 12 propriedades rurais familiares, situadas na Região Sul do Brasil, com dados coletados entre abril de 2017 e março de 2020. Foram analisados quatro insumos comuns a todas as propriedades. Os resultados demonstraram que houve um acréscimo de 39,47% nos custos de aquisição dos insumos, equivalente a um aumento médio ponderado de 34,7%, o que impactou negativamente no resultado monetário das propriedades familiares. Concluiu-se que as propriedades foram afetadas pelos efeitos da pandemia no que se refere à compra de insumos, principalmente com o aumento dos custos de aquisição, em decorrência do desabastecimento dos suprimentos essenciais para as operações básicas das pequenas propriedades rurais. Abstract In recent years, food insecurity has worsened despite decades of progress. Agrifood systems must evolve to address population expansion and climate change simultaneously. A problem of this magnitude necessitates the development of technologies that simultaneously increase (nutritious) food production and protect the environment. Based on an a diagram analysis of the economic model of technological change, this article explores various technological paths that can emerge in response to rising food prices and the need to preserve land. This article indicates, through the use of specialized literature, that the hypotheses derived from the analysis of the technological change model already exist. In addition, we investigate the potential geopolitical effects of these technological shifts on the global agri-food industry. Abstract Considering the reduced Brazilian participation in the world production of organic food and its potential in the traditional farming, we used cross-section data (based on organic producers, registered in January/2022) to analyses which local characteristics would explain the number of organic producers in Brazilian’s municipalities. The OLS, Poisson and Negative Binomial estimators, including “zero inflated” and endogeneity corrections (via instruments), were considered. It was found that organic producers would rather be in cities that are near from state capital, which are populous, rich, with a stable climate, slightly rainy, mild temperatures, better education, predominantly rural population, whose rural producers are between 25-55 years old, and which have organic producers in the neighborhood. Furthermore, they prefer places with more rural properties between 5-50 hectares, with their own irrigation, family-labor activity and that usually avoid pesticides. Alternatively, cities with strong agricultural production and high public expenditures in this area, whose properties have their own storage systems and receive more technical assistance, would be neglected. Resumo Dada a reduzida participação brasileira na produção mundial de alimentos orgânicos e seu potencial no ramo alimentício, avaliou-se, via dados cross-section (baseados nos produtores orgânicos, cadastrados em janeiro/2022), quais características locais explicariam o número de empreendimentos orgânicos nos municípios brasileiros. Para tanto, consideraram-se os estimadores de MQO, Poisson e Binomial Negativo, inclusive “zero inflated”, com correções (via instrumentos) para variável endógena. Verificou-se que os produtores orgânicos seriam atraídos para os municípios mais próximos à capital estadual, populosos, ricos, de clima estável, levemente chuvosos, de temperatura amena, com melhor educação, população predominantemente rural, cujos produtores rurais têm entre 25-55 anos e que possuem produtores orgânicos na vizinhança. Ademais, eles parecem preferir locais com mais propriedades rurais entre 5-50 hectares, com irrigação própria, mão-de-obra familiar e que evitam agrotóxicos. Alternativamente, cidades com forte produção agropecuária, elevados gastos públicos nesta área e em transportes, cujas propriedades possuem sistemas próprios de armazenagem e recebem mais assistência técnica, seriam preteridos.
