OBJETIVO: Descrever os índices articulatórios quanto aos diferentes tipos de erros e verificar a existência de um tipo de erro preferencial em crianças com transtorno fonológico, em função da presença ou não de histórico de otite média. MÉTODOS: Participaram deste estudo prospectivo e transversal, 21 sujeitos com idade entre 5 anos e 2 meses e 7 anos e 9 meses com diagnóstico de transtorno fonológico. Os sujeitos foram agrupados de acordo com a presença do histórico otite média. O grupo experimental 1 (GE1) foi composto por 14 sujeitos com histórico de otite média e o grupo experimental 2 (GE2) por sete sujeitos que não apresentaram histórico de otite média. Foram calculadas a quantidade de erros de fala (distorções, omissões e substituições) e os índices articulatórios. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística. RESULTADOS: Os grupos GE1 e GE2 diferiram quanto ao desempenho nos índices na comparação entre as duas provas de fonologia aplicadas. Observou-se em todas as análises que os índices que avaliam as substituições indicaram o tipo de erro mais cometido pelas crianças com transtorno fonológico. CONCLUSÃO: Os índices foram efetivos na indicação da substituição como o erro mais ocorrente em crianças com TF. A maior ocorrência de erros de fala observada na nomeação de figuras em crianças com histórico de otite média indica que tais erros, possivelmente, estão associados à dificuldade na representação fonológica causada pela perda auditiva transitória que vivenciaram.

PURPOSE: To describe articulatory indexes for the different speech errors and to verify the existence of a preferred type of error in children with speech sound disorder, according to the presence or absence of otitis media history. METHODS: Participants in this prospective and cross-sectional study were 21 subjects aged between 5 years and 2 months and 7 years and 9 months with speech sound disorder. Subjects were grouped according to the presence of otitis media history: experimental group 1 (EG1) with 14 subjects with otitis media history and experimental group 2 (EG2) with seven subjects without otitis media history. The amount of speech errors (distortions, omissions and substitutions) and the articulation indexes were calculated. Data were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The performances from EG1 and EG2 regarding the indexes were different from each other in both phonological tasks applied. In all analyzes, the indexes evaluating substitutions indicated that this type of error was the most prevalent in children with speech sound disorders. CONCLUSION: The use of indexes was effective to indicate that substitution is the most prevalent type of error in children with speech sound disorders. The greater occurrence of speech errors observed in the picture naming task in children with otitis media history indicates that such errors are possibly associated to difficulties in phonological representation secondary to fluctuating conductive hearing loss.

OBJETIVO: Investigar a autopercepção do grau de quantidade de fala e intensidade vocal de teleoperadores em ambiente laboral e extralaboral e comparar com autoavaliação vocal e análise perceptivo-auditiva da voz. MÉTODOS: Participaram 299 teleoperadores ativos e receptivos, de ambos os gêneros, com média de idade de 27,1 anos. Foi aplicado o "Teste de grau de quantidade de fala e grau de intensidade vocal" em duas situações de comunicação: voz laboral e extralaboral, além da realização de autoavaliação vocal e análise perceptivo-auditiva. RESULTADOS: No setor de telesserviços há um maior número de mulheres em relação ao número de homens, com média de idade de 27,1 anos. Em relação ao gênero, mulheres falam mais em ambiente laboral quando comparadas aos homens. Ao comparar quantidade de fala e intensidade de voz dentro e fora do trabalho, é observado maior uso e intensidade vocal no ambiente laboral. CONCLUSÃO: O teleoperador é um profissional da voz que relata falar mais e falar mais alto em situações de trabalho. Mulheres dessa categoria profissional falam mais que homens em qualquer uma das situações avaliadas. Não se observou correlação entre quantidade de fala, intensidade de voz e autoavaliação da voz.

PURPOSE: To investigate self-perceived talkativeness and vocal loudness in call center operators during labor and extra-labor situations and compare it with vocal self-assessment and perceptual analysis. METHODS: Participants were 299 male and female call center operators working in an inbound and outbound mode. Their average age was 27.1 years. The procedures were as follows: Talkativeness and Vocal Loudness Test in two situations of communication - work and extra-work; vocal self-assessment and perceptual analysis. RESULTS: There are more women than men working in telemarketing. Regarding gender, women talk more in the work situation when compared to men. By comparing talkativeness and vocal loudness in work and extra-work situations, increased talkativeness and vocal loudness were observed in the work environment. CONCLUSION: The call center operator is a voice professional that reports speaking more and more loudly in work situations. Women talk more than men in any of the situations evaluated. There was no significant correlation between talkativeness, vocal loudness and self-assessment of voice.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar os tipos de dores corporais apresentados por teleoperadores e verificar sua relação com o uso da voz em atividades laborais. MÉTODOS: Duzentos e trinta e cinco teleoperadores e 235 indivíduos da população geral responderam um questionário contendo questões fechadas sobre dores corporais proximais e distais à laringe, problemas de voz, atuação profissional e consulta à especialista. Investigou-se se há relação e/ou associação de cada tipo de dor com os demais aspectos do questionário. RESULTADOS: As dores corporais foram referidas por ambos os grupos, entretanto, os teleoperadores as referiram em maior número. Teleoperadores tiveram maior necessidade de se afastar do trabalho e relataram mais dores corporais (ombros, pescoço, cabeça, costas, braços, mãos e ouvidos) que a população geral. Houve relação da maioria das dores corporais com problemas vocais, afastamento do trabalho por problemas vocais e consulta ao otorrinolaringologista no grupo de teleoperadores. Na população geral houve tendência de relação entre jornada de trabalho e dores no peito e nas mãos. Não houve diferença na comparação de presença de dores corporais entre os gêneros em ambos os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: Teleoperadores sofrem mais dores distais e proximais à laringe e têm maior necessidade de se afastar do trabalho por problemas de voz que a população geral, evidenciando o desgaste vocal e físico desses profissionais.

PURPOSE: To characterize types of body aches presented by call center operators and to verify the relationship of the selected body aches with voice use in work activities. METHODS: 235 call center operators and 235 individuals from the general population responded to a questionnaire with closed questions about body aches (classified into proximal and distal larynx aches), voice problems, professional activity and search for specialized help. It was investigated whether there was a relationship between each type of pain and the other aspects addressed by the questionnaire. RESULTS: Body aches were reported by both groups; however call center operators reported a greater number of them. Call center operators also reported having greater need of calling sick and more aches (shoulders, neck, head, back, arms, hands and ears) than the general population. There was a relationship between most of the body aches with voice problem, absenteeism from work due to voice problems and appointment with an otolaryngologist in the group of call center operators. In the general population, the workload tended to relate to chest and hand pains. There was no difference between the groups when the body aches were compared. CONCLUSION: Call center operators suffer from more body aches that are both proximal to and distal from the larynx and have greater need to call sick due to voice problems than the general population, fact that highlights the vocal and physical fatigue of these professionals.

OBJETIVO: Identificar se existe correlação entre ruído ambiental no interior da sala de aula, intensidade da voz e presença de alteração vocal em professores. MÉTODOS: Foi realizada medição do ruído ambiental em dez salas de escolas municipais de ensino fundamental. A intensidade das vozes das professoras foi medida durante atividade de ensino. Amostras de vogal prolongada [é] e contagem de 1 a 20 emitidas pelas professoras foram analisadas utilizando escala GRBASI. Os resultados obtidos foram correlacionados. RESULTADOS: A média de ruído ambiental sem a presença das crianças em sala de aula variou de 40 a 51 dB(A) e com a presença das crianças de 45 a 65 dB(A). Entre as professoras, houve 70% de ocorrência de vozes alteradas no grau geral (G) e 90% com tensão na voz (S), variando entre graus discreto e moderado. Constatou-se variação entre 52 dB(A) e 68 dB(A) na intensidade da voz das professoras, atingindo 7,48 dB(A) acima do nível do ruído ambiental. Houve correlação entre a intensidade vocal das professoras e ruído ambiental na presença das crianças durante a aula. CONCLUSÃO: Os níveis de ruído ambiental em sala de aula são altos e se correlacionam com o aumento da intensidade das vozes das professoras. Embora com alta ocorrência de vozes alteradas, não é possível correlacioná-las com o nível de ruído ambiental.

PURPOSE: To explore the existence of correlations between environmental noise in classrooms, voice intensity and teacher's vocal problems. METHODS: Environmental noise was measured in 10 classrooms of municipal elementary schools; the intensity of teachers' voice was measured during teaching practice; teachers' speech samples containing emissions of sustained vowel [é] and counting from 1 to 20 were analyzed using the GRBASI protocol; and the results were tested for correlation. RESULTS: The average of environmental noise varied from 40 to 51 dB(A) without the presence of children in the classroom, and from 45 to 65 dB(A) with the presence of children. Among teachers, there was 70% of vocal problems (G) and 90% of vocal strain (S) varying from moderate to mild degrees. The intensity of teachers' voice varied from 52 dB(A) to 68 dB(A), reaching 7.48 dB(A) above the environmental noise. There was a significant correlation between the intensity of teachers' voice and the environmental noise during the class in the presence of children. CONCLUSION: There were high levels of environmental noise in the classrooms, which correlated with the intensity of teachers' voice (SPL). Although there was high occurrence of vocal problems in this sample, they were not correlated with the level of environmental noise.

OBJETIVO: Comparar as latências e as amplitudes da onda V no registro do Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Tronco Encefálico (PEATE) com os estímulos clique e CE-chirp® e a presença ou ausência das ondas I, III e V em fortes intensidades. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com 12 adultos com limiares audiométricos <15 dBNA (24 orelhas) e idade média de 27 anos. Os parâmetros utilizados para o registro com os dois estímulos nas intensidades de 80, 60, 40, 20 dBnNA foram polaridade alternada e taxa de repetição de 27,1 Hz. RESULTADOS: As latências da onda V observadas com CE-chirp® foram maiores que as observadas com o clique nas intensidades fracas (20 e 40 dBnNA). Já nas intensidades fortes (60 e 80 dBnNA), o oposto ocorreu. Maiores amplitudes foram observadas com o CE-chirp® em todas as intensidades, exceto em 80 dBnNA. CONCLUSÃO: O CE-chirp® apresentou latências mais curtas que as observadas com o clique em fortes intensidades e maiores amplitudes em todas as intensidades, exceto em 80 dBnNA. As ondas I e III tenderam a desaparecer quando o estímulo CE-chirp® foi utilizado.

PURPOSE: To compare the latencies and amplitudes of wave V on the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP) recording obtained with click and CE-chirp® stimuli and the presence or absence of waves I, III and V in high intensities. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 12 adults with audiometric thresholds <15 dBHL (24 ears) and mean age of 27 years. The parameters used for the recording with both stimuli in intensities of 80, 60, 40, 20 dBnHL were alternate polarity and repetition rate of 27.1 Hz. RESULTS: The CE-chirp® latencies for wave V were longer than click latencies at low intensity levels (20 and 40 dBnHL). At high intensity levels (60 and 80 dBnHL), the opposite occurred. Larger wave V amplitudes were observed with CE-chirp® in all intensity levels, except at 80 dBnHL. CONCLUSION: The CE-chirp® showed shorter latencies than those observed with clicks at high intensity levels and larger amplitudes at all intensity levels, except at 80 dBnHL. The waves I and III tended to disappear with CE-chirp® stimulation.

OBJETIVO: Analisar os efeitos auditivos da exposição combinada ao monóxido de carbono (CO) e ao ruído, e o impacto do tabagismo. MÉTODOS: Participaram da pesquisa 80 trabalhadores fumantes e não fumantes, do gênero masculino, oriundos de uma empresa siderúrgica, sendo que 40 estavam expostos ao CO e ao ruído e 40 somente ao ruído. Realizou-se análise retrospectiva dos dados referentes aos riscos ambientais (CO e ruído) e das informações contidas nos prontuários médicos relacionadas à saúde auditiva e às concentrações biológicas do CO no sangue (COHb). Analisou-se a audiometria tonal de referência e a última, e os limiares auditivos em função do tabagismo, do tipo de exposição (CO e ruído ou somente ao ruído), do tempo de exposição, do nível de ruído e da idade. RESULTADOS: Tanto a concentração de CO como os níveis de ruído encontraram-se acima do limite de tolerância previsto na norma regulamentadora de número 15 do Ministério do Trabalho. O grupo exposto ao CO e ao ruído apresentou mais casos de PAIR (22,5%), comparativamente ao grupo exposto somente ao ruído (7,5%) e também apresentou piora significativa nos limiares auditivos de 3, 4 e 6 kHz. Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre a idade, o tempo de serviço, o tipo de exposição, o nível de ruído e o hábito de fumar influenciando nos limiares auditivos dos participantes. O hábito de fumar potencializou o efeito tanto do CO quanto do ruído no sistema auditivo. CONCLUSÃO: Efeitos auditivos significativos foram identificados na audição dos trabalhadores de uma siderúrgica expostos ao CO.

PURPOSE: To analyze the auditory effects of the combined exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and noise, and the impact of smoking. METHODS: Participants were 80 male workers, smokers and non-smokers, from a steel industry - 40 exposed to CO and noise simultaneously, and 40 exposed only to noise. A retrospective data analysis was conducted regarding the environmental risks (CO and noise) and the file information related to auditory health and to the biological concentrations of CO in the blood (CPHb). The first and the last pure-tone audiometry results were analyzed considering the smoking habits, the type of exposure (CO and noise or noise only), the time of exposure, the level of noise, and age. RESULTS: Both the CO concentration and the noise levels were above the tolerance limits provided by the regulatory norm number 15 of the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The group of workers exposed to CO and noise presented a higher rate of noise-induced hearing loss (22.5%), when compared to the group exposed only to noise (7.5%), as well as significant worsening of the hearing thresholds of 3, 4 and 6 kHz. Age, time of exposure, type of exposure, level of noise, and smoking habit significantly influenced the auditory threshold of the participants. Smoking enhanced the effects of both CO and noise on the auditory system. CONCLUSION: The occupational exposure to noise and CO resulted in significant effects on the auditory system of workers from a steel industry.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a presença do distúrbio de voz em professores na concordância entre autorreferência, avaliação perceptiva da voz e das pregas vocais. MÉTODOS: Deste estudo transversal, participaram 60 professores de duas escolas públicas de ensino fundamental e médio. Após responderem questionário de autopercepção (Condição de Produção Vocal do Professor - CPV-P) para caracterização da amostra e levantamento de dados sobre autorreferência ao distúrbio de voz, foram submetidos à coleta de amostra de fala e exame nasofibrolaringoscópico. Para classificar as vozes, três juízes fonoaudiólogos utilizaram à escala GRBASI e, para pregas vocais (PPVV), um otorrinolaringologista descreveu as alterações encontradas. Os dados foram analisados descritivamente, e a seguir submetidos a testes de associação. RESULTADOS: No questionário, 63,3% dos participantes referiram ter ou ter tido distúrbio de voz. Do total, 43,3% foram diagnosticados com alteração em voz e 46,7%, em prega vocal. Não houve associação entre autorreferência e avaliação da voz, nem entre autorreferência e avaliação de PPVV, com registro de concordância baixa entre as três avaliações. Porém, houve associação entre a avaliação da voz e de PPVV, com concordância intermediária entre elas. CONCLUSÃO: Há maior autorreferência a distúrbio de voz do que o constatado pela avaliação perceptiva da voz e das pregas vocais. A concordância intermediária entre as duas avaliações prediz a necessidade da realização de pelo menos uma delas por ocasião da triagem em professores.

PURPOSE: To analyze the presence of voice disorders in teachers in agreement between self-report, auditory-perceptive assessment of voice quality and vocal fold assessment. METHODS: The subjects of this cross-sectional study were 60 public elementary, middle and high-school teachers. After answering a self-awareness questionnaire (Voice Production Conditions of Teachers - CPV-P) used to characterize the sample and collect self-report data regarding voice disorders, the teachers were submitted to speech sample collection procedures and laryngoscopic examination. In order to classify the voices, three speech-language pathologist judges used the GRBASI scale, and an otorhynolaryngologist described the alterations seen in the vocal folds. Data were descriptively analyzed and then submitted to association tests. RESULTS: In the questionnaire, 63.3% of the subjects reported having or having had a voice disorder, while 43.3% were diagnosed with a vocal quality deviation and 46.7% with vocal fold alteration. There was no association between self-report and voice quality assessment, or between self-report and vocal fold evaluation, with low levels of agreement between the three assessments. However, there was association between voice quality and vocal fold assessment, with intermediate level of agreement between them. CONCLUSION: There were more self-reported voice disorders than what was found in the auditory-perceptive and vocal fold assessments. The intermediate agreement between the two assessments predicts the need for the use of at least one of these techniques when performing screening procedures in teachers.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a prevalência de desvio fonológico conforme idade, gênero e nível sócio econômico de crianças da cidade de Salvador, Bahia, Brasil. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por 2880 crianças de ambos os gêneros, na faixa etária de 4 anos a 6 anos e 11 meses, de nível socioeconômico baixo, médio e alto, matriculadas nas escolas municipais de Salvador. Inicialmente, todas as crianças foram submetidas, de forma individual, à triagem fonoaudiológica e triagem auditiva. Além disso, foi realizada uma anamnese com os responsáveis e uma entrevista com os professores. Em seguida, foi realizada a avaliação fonológica e análise contrastiva, a fim de diagnosticar crianças com desvio fonológico. Calculou-se a prevalência do desvio fonológico e foi realizado tratamento estatístico. RESULTADOS: A prevalência do desvio fonológico foi de 9,17%. Verificou-se maior prevalência do desvio fonológico no gênero masculino. Além disso, ao associar os gêneros às variáveis "idade" e "nível socioeconômico", a prevalência variou estatisticamente. CONCLUSÃO: Fatores biológicos e sociais podem influenciar na aquisição das habilidades fonológicas da linguagem oral. Medidas de prevenção e ações voltadas para identificar e tratar o desvio fonológico devem considerar as diferentes classes de desenvolvimento socioeconômico.

PURPOSE: To verify the prevalence of phonological disorders according to age, gender and socioeconomic level of children from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: The sample comprised 2880 children of both genders from low, middle and high socioeconomic levels enrolled in public schools from Salvador, with ages ranging from 4 years to 6 years and 11 months. Initially, all children were individually screened for speech-language and hearing disorders. Moreover, an anamnesis was conducted with caregivers/parents, and teachers answered to an interview. After that, a phonological assessment and a contrastive analysis were conducted, in order to diagnose children with phonological disorders. The prevalence of phonological disorder was calculated, and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of speech disorders was 9.17%. It was verified a higher prevalence of phonological disorders for male subjects. In addition, when genders were associated to the variables "age" and "socioeconomic status", the prevalence varied statistically. CONCLUSION: Biological and social factors might influence the acquisition of phonological skills of oral language. Prevention measures and actions directed to identifying and treating phonological disorders should consider the different classes of socioeconomic development.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar objetivamente as alterações de crianças e adolescentes incluídos no espectro do autismo de acordo com o grau de severidade definido a partir das respostas ao Functional Communication Profile - Revised (FCP-R). MÉTODOS: Foram selecionadas 50 crianças (idade média 7 anos e 11 meses) com diagnósticos no espectro do autismo que foram avaliados segundo os critérios do FCP-R. As respostas obtidas foram pontuadas e classificadas de acordo com a severidade e realizada análise estatística pertinente. RESULTADOS: A caracterização dessa população evidenciou dados concordantes com a literatura, mostrando prejuízos nas áreas de linguagem (expressiva e receptiva), comportamento e pragmática, principalmente. Os indivíduos que não possuem habilidades verbais evidenciaram, ainda, alterações referentes aos domínios fala e fluência. CONCLUSÃO: O FCP-R foi sensível para caracterizar a população estudada, mostrando-se ainda mais eficaz para a avaliação individualizada.

PURPOSE: To objectively characterize the alterations of autistic children and adolescents as to their severity degree, according to the answers to the Functional Communication Profile - Revised (FCP-R). METHODS: Subjects were 50 children (mean age 7 years 11 months) with diagnosis within the autism spectrum that were assessed according to the FCP-R criteria. Answers were scored and classified according to severity, and the results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: This group characterization evidenced results that agree with the literature, showing disorders mainly in the areas of language (expressive and receptive), behavior and pragmatics. Individuals without verbal communication also showed speech and fluency disorders. CONCLUSION: The FCP-R was sensitive to characterize the studied population, and even more efficient for individual assessment.
