INTRODUÇÃO: a responsabilidade do cirurgião-dentista pode ser entendida como obrigações de ordem penal, civil, ética e administrativa, às quais está sujeito no exercício de sua atividade. Assim, se comprovado um resultado lesivo ao paciente - por imprudência, imperícia ou negligência -, o cirurgião-dentista estará sujeito às penalidades previstas no Código Civil, sendo obrigado a satisfazer o dano e indenizar segundo a consequência provocada. Em processos cíveis, as partes poderão contratar um assistente técnico para fornecer, aos respectivos advogados, conhecimentos técnicos e científicos inerentes ao tema. OBJETIVO: informar sobre a importância da atuação de assistentes técnicos em processos cíveis, propiciando às partes uma maior compreensão dos aspectos técnicos, éticos e legais. CONCLUSÃO: há a necessidade de um maior conhecimento, por parte dos profissionais em Odontologia, sobre os aspectos éticos e legais que norteiam a profissão.

INTRODUCTION: The dentist's liability can be understood as the criminal, civil, ethical and administrative obligation that they have in their professional exercise. Thus, when producing a harmful result to the patient, due to imprudence, ineptitude or recklessness, the dentists will be liable to the foreseen penalties on the Civil Code, where the compensation will be obligatory to satisfy the damage according to the reached consequence. In these types of processes, the involved parts will be able to contract a technical assistant to supply the respective lawyers about biological, technician and professional knowledge. AIM: This paper aim to report about the technical assistant's importance, in the performance of each one of the involved parts in a civil process. CONCLUSION: It is necessary a major knowledge, by dentists, about legal and ethical aspects in the professional activity.

INTRODUÇÃO: a distância interincisiva máxima é um importante aspecto na avaliação miofuncional orofacial, pois distúrbios miofuncionais orofaciais podem limitar a abertura da boca. OBJETIVO: mensurar a distância interincisiva máxima de crianças respiradoras bucais, relacionando-a com a idade, e comparar as médias dessas medidas com as médias dessa distância em crianças sem queixas fonoaudiológicas. MÉTODOS: participaram 99 crianças respiradoras bucais, de ambos os gêneros, com idades entre 7 anos e 11 anos e 11 meses, leucodermas, em dentadura mista. O grupo controle foi composto por 253 crianças, com idades entre 7 anos e 11 anos e 11 meses, leucodermas, em dentadura mista, sem queixas fonoaudiológicas. RESULTADOS: os achados evidenciam que a média das distâncias interincisivas máximas das crianças respiradoras bucais foi, no total da amostra, de 43,55mm, não apresentando diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as médias, segundo a idade. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as médias da distância interincisiva máxima dos respiradores bucais e as médias dessa medida das crianças do grupo controle. CONCLUSÕES: a distância interincisiva máxima é uma medida que não variou nos respiradores bucais, durante a dentadura mista, segundo a idade, e parece não estar alterada em portadores desse tipo de disfunção. Aponta-se, também, a importância do uso do paquímetro na avaliação objetiva da distância interincisiva máxima.

INTRODUCTION: The maximum interincisal distance is an important aspect in the orofacial myofunctional evaluation, because orofacial myofunctional disorders can limit the mouth opening. AIM: To describe the maximum interincisal distance of the mouth breathing children, according to age, and to compare the averages of the maximum interincisal distance of mouth breathing children to those of children with no history of speech-language pathology disorders. METHODS: Ninety-nine mouth breathing children participated, of both genders, with ages ranging from 7 to 11 years and 11 months, Caucasian, in mixed dentition. The control group was composed by 253 children, with ages ranging from 7 years to 11 years and 11 months, Caucasian, in mixed dentition period, with no history of speech-language pathology disorders. RESULTS: The results show that the average of the maximum interincisal distance of the mouth breathing children was, considering the total sample, 43.55 millimeters, and it did not show statistically significant difference between averages according to age. There is no statistically significant difference between the maximum interincisal distance's averages of the mouth breathing children and the averages of this distance of the control group children. CONCLUSIONS: The maximum interincisal distance is one measure that did not modify in mouth breathing children, during mixed dentition period, according to age, and seems not to be altered in this population. It is also observed the importance of use of the caliper in objective evaluation of the maximum interincisal distance.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo deste estudo prospectivo de 32 adolescentes com má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1, associada a retrognatismo mandibular, tratados com aparelho de Herbst, construído sobre bandas e coroas metálicas, foi avaliar cefalometricamente as possíveis mudanças no padrão de crescimento facial. METODOLOGIA: as telerradiografias laterais foram obtidas ao início do tratamento (T1) e imediatamente após 12 meses de tratamento com o referido aparelho ortopédico (T2). Foram utilizados o quociente de Jarabak e o VERT de Ricketts (modificado) para determinação do padrão facial em T1 e T2. RESULTADOS: utilizando o quociente de Jarabak, os resultados evidenciaram que 27 casos (84,4%) apresentaram padrões hipodivergentes em T1 e permaneceram da mesma forma em T2. Cinco casos (15,6%) apresentaram padrão neutro em T1 e não exibiram mudanças em T2. Quando avaliado o VERT de Ricketts (modificado), não ocorreram mudanças no padrão facial em 31 pacientes. Em apenas um caso ocorreu mudança do tipo facial. CONCLUSÃO: baseado nos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que, após 12 meses de tratamento com aparelho de Herbst, não ocorreram mudanças verticais no padrão de crescimento facial dos pacientes estudados.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate through the exam of cephalograms the occurrence of changes in facial growth pattern. The sample was composed by 32 adolescent with Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusion and mandibular retrognathism. All patients were treated with the Herbst appliance built over bands and metal crowns. METHODOLOGY: Lateral cephalograms were taken at the beginning of treatment (T1) and immediately after 12 months of treatment with Herbst appliance (T2). Jarabak's coefficient and Ricketts' VERT (modified) were used to establish the facial pattern in T1 and T2. RESULTS: According to Jarabak's coefficient, in T1, 84.4% (27 cases) presented hypodiverging pattern and 15.6% (5 cases) presented neutral pattern. The facial growth pattern was maintained in all patients from T1 to T2. When the (modified) Ricketts' VERT was used, 31 patients showed the same growth pattern from T1 to T2. Only one patient exhibited a different pattern. CONCLUSION: Based on the results it can be concluded that, after 12 months of treatment with the Herbst appliance, there were no vertical changes in the facial growth pattern of the studied subjects.

OBJETIVO: tendo em vista o conflito existente, no Ordenamento Jurídico brasileiro, entre o princípio da legalidade e o princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana no que diz respeito à prática da Ortodontia pelo cirurgião-dentista não-especialista, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a legislação e os julgados dos tribunais nesse assunto. MÉTODOS: realizou-se o levantamento da legislação referente ao ensino e à prática da Ortodontia no Diário Oficial da União e nos órgãos competentes. Com relação aos julgados dos tribunais, a pesquisa foi realizada nos Tribunais de Justiça e nos extintos Tribunais de Alçada de todos os Estados-membros da República Federativa do Brasil, bem como do Superior Tribunal de Justiça e do Supremo Tribunal Federal, utilizando as palavras-chave " Ortodontia" , " ortodôntico" e " ortodontista" . RESULTADOS: a legislação brasileira classifica os cursos de pós-graduação em stricto sensu e lato sensu, os quais possuem normas de funcionamento próprias. As Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais determinam que, no curso de graduação em Odontologia, seja apenas ministrada a Ortodontia Preventiva. Os tribunais brasileiros entendem que, para a prática da Ortodontia Corretiva, é necessária habilitação em curso de pós-graduação. CONCLUSÃO: o curso de graduação em Odontologia é competente para o ensino da Ortodontia Preventiva; somente os cursos de pós-graduação stricto sensu e lato sensu são competentes para ensinar a Ortodontia Corretiva; é inconcebível a interpretação de que o legislador faculta ao cirurgião-dentista não-especialista praticar a Ortodontia Corretiva; e o cirurgião-dentista não-especialista só pode praticar procedimentos que estejam incluídos na categoria de Ortodontia Preventiva e Interceptiva.

OBJECTIVE: In view of the conflict in the Brazilian legal system between the principle of legality and the principle of human dignity with regard to the practice of orthodontics by General Practice Dentists, this study aimed to analyze the legislation and judgments passed by courts regarding this issue. METHODS: The authors conducted a survey of the legislation in the Federal Official Gazette and the competent authorities concerning the teaching and practice of orthodontics. As regards judgments passed, searches were performed in the Courts of Justice and the defunct Courts of Appeals in all Member States of the Federative Republic of Brazil, as well as the Superior Court of Justice and the Federal Supreme Court, using the keywords " Orthodontics" , " orthodontic" and " orthodontist" . RESULTS: Brazilian legislation classifies postgraduate courses as strict sense (stricto sensu) or broad sense (lato sensu) courses, each with its own rules of operation. National Curriculum Guidelines provide that only Preventive Orthodontics be taught at the undergraduate level. It is the understanding of Brazilian courts that a postgraduate certificate is a prerequisite for the practice of Corrective Orthodontics. CONCLUSION: An undergraduate course in Dentistry is sufficient for the teaching of Preventive Orthodontics; only postgraduate programs in the strict and broad senses are competent to teach Corrective Orthodontics; any construal that legislation allows General Practice Dentists to practice Corrective Orthodontics is inconceivable; General Practice Dentists are only allowed to perform procedures comprised in the Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontics categories.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos esqueléticos e dentoalveolares do tratamento de pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II com o aparelho Jasper Jumper associado ao aparelho ortodôntico fixo, comparados a um grupo controle não-tratado. MÉTODOS: a amostra foi constituída por 47 indivíduos, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo 1, contendo 25 pacientes com idade média de 12,72 anos, tratados com o aparelho Jasper Jumper por um tempo médio de 2,15 anos; Grupo 2 (controle), composto por 22 indivíduos com idade média de 12,67 anos, não-submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico e com má oclusão de Classe II, observados por um período médio de 2,12 anos. Foram avaliadas as telerradiografias ao início e ao final do tratamento ortodôntico para o Grupo 1 e do período de observação para o Grupo 2. As variáveis cefalométricas iniciais, finais e as alterações com o tratamento foram comparadas entre os grupos por meio do teste t independente. RESULTADOS: em comparação ao grupo controle, o grupo Jasper Jumper apresentou maior restrição do deslocamento anterior da maxila e maior retrusão maxilar, melhora da relação maxilomandibular, diminuição da convexidade facial, maior protrusão e intrusão dos incisivos inferiores e maior extrusão dos molares inferiores, além de maior diminuição dos trespasses horizontal e vertical e maior melhora da relação molar. CONCLUSÃO: a correção da Classe II no grupo tratado com o Jasper Jumper e aparelhagem fixa se deu principalmente devido à restrição do crescimento maxilar, protrusão e intrusão dos incisivos inferiores e extrusão dos molares inferiores.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of the Class II malocclusion treatment with the Jasper Jumper appliance associated with fixed orthodontic appliances, compared to an untreated control group. METHODS: The sample comprised 47 subjects, divided into two groups: Group 1, with 25 patients at a mean age of 12.72 years, treated with the Jasper Jumper appliance for a mean period of 2.15 years; Group 2 (Control), including 22 subjects at a mean age of 12.67 years, who were not submitted to orthodontic treatment and presenting Class II malocclusion, observed by a mean period of 2.12 years. It was evaluated the cephalograms before and after orthodontic treatment for Group 1 and observational period for Group 2. Initial and final cephalometric variables and changes with treatment were compared between the groups by independent t tests. RESULTS: When compared to the control group, the Jasper Jumper group presented greater restriction of anterior displacement of the maxilla and a greater maxillary retrusion, improvement of maxillomandibular relationship, reduction of facial convexity, greater protrusion and intrusion of mandibular incisors and a greater extrusion of mandibular molars, besides a greater reduction of overjet and overbite and improvement of molar relationship. CONCLUSION: The correction of the Class II in the group treated with the Jasper Jumper and fixed appliances was mainly due to restriction of maxillary growth, protrusion and intrusion of mandibular incisors and extrusion of mandibular molars.

INTRODUÇÃO: o conhecimento da situação epidemiológica da população é importante para o planejamento e execução dos serviços odontológicos. OBJETIVOS: avaliar a prevalência de más oclusões em escolares de 9 a 12 anos de idade da rede municipal de ensino da cidade de Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro). MÉTODOS: a amostra, selecionada aleatoriamente, foi composta por 407 crianças (53,1% do gênero feminino), que foram avaliadas por um profissional treinado, após autorização de seus responsáveis. RESULTADOS: as más oclusões mais prevalentes foram apinhamento (45,5%), sobressaliência exagerada (29,7%), mordida cruzada posterior (19,2%), diastemas anteriores (16,2%), dente parcialmente irrompido (12,0%) e sobremordida exagerada (10,8%). A relação molar mais presente foi a de Classe I (76,7%). A presença de diastemas foi maior no gênero feminino e a sobremordida exagerada foi mais prevalente no gênero masculino, ambas na dentição mista. Sobressaliência negativa e presença de dente parcialmente irrompido tiveram maior prevalência na dentição permanente. CONCLUSÃO: observou-se que a simples avaliação da prevalência das más oclusões não revela a gravidade nem a hierarquia da necessidade de tratamento, fatores importantes no planejamento em Saúde Pública.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of a population's epidemiological situation is important in the planning and provision of dental services. OBJECTIVES: Assess the prevalence of malocclusion in children aged 9 to 12 years old from public schools in the city of Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. METHODS: A randomly selected sample consisting of 407 children (53.1% female) who were evaluated by a trained professional, after parental consent. RESULTS: The most prevalent malocclusions were crowding (45.5%), excessive overjet (29.7%), posterior crossbite (19.2%), anterior diastema (16.2%), partially erupted teeth (12.0%) and excessive overbite (10.8%). Class I molar relationship prevailed (76.7%). The presence of diastemas was higher in females and excessive overbite was more prevalent in males, both in mixed dentition. Negative overjet and the presence of partially erupted teeth had a higher prevalence in permanent dentition. CONCLUSION: It was observed that the mere evaluation of malocclusion prevalence does not reveal case severity or treatment need, both of which are important factors in public health planning.

OBJETIVO: avaliar as alterações nos arcos dentários superiores no sentido transversal e a quantidade de inclinações nos dentes de apoio do aparelho de expansão tipo Hyrax em pacientes submetidos à expansão rápida da maxila assistida cirurgicamente (ERMAC) e a efetividade dessa técnica cirúrgica utilizada. A amostra foi composta por 34 pares de modelos de gesso de 17 pacientes, sendo 6 do gênero masculino e 11 do gênero feminino. MÉTODOS: as medidas foram realizadas em modelos de gesso por meio de medição das alterações nos planos vertical e transversal. O procedimento cirúrgico adotado foi uma osteotomia nas paredes laterais da maxila sem o envolvimento da lâmina pterigoide, osteotomia da espinha nasal à linha média dentária (incisivos centrais anteriores), separação da sutura palatina mediana por meio de cinzel e separação do septo nasal. O início das ativações ocorreu no terceiro dia pós-operatório, sendo uma pela manhã e uma à noite. RESULTADOS: houve expansão significativa estatisticamente na região dos caninos, primeiros e segundos pré-molares, primeiros e segundos molares, respectivamente de 6,03mm, 9,82mm, 8,66mm, 9,72mm e 5,67mm. Avaliando o comportamento dos dentes de apoio do disjuntor quanto às inclinações das coroas dentárias, notou-se que ocorreu uma vestibularização assimétrica, pois para os primeiros molares os valores encontrados foram 6,89º (direito) e 9,56º (esquerdo), e para os primeiros pré-molares os valores obtidos foram 4,74º (esquerdo) e 3,26º (direito), sendo esse considerado estatisticamente não-significativo. CONCLUSÕES: a técnica cirúrgica empregada para esta pesquisa mostrou ser eficiente para se obter alteração transversal maxilar, ocorrendo inclinação dentoalveolar dos dentes de apoio do disjuntor.

AIM: To assess the changes to the superior dental arches, in the transversal direction, and the amount of inclinations in the support teeth of the Hyrax expansion appliance in patients who underwent surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME), as well as the effectiveness of the surgical technique used. The sample was composed of 34 pairs of cast models, of 17 patients - 6 males and 11 females. METHODS: The measurements were performed on cast models, by measuring the changes on the vertical and transversal planes. The surgical procedure used was the lateral osteotomy on maxillary walls with no involvement of the pterygoid blade, osteotomy of nasal spine on dental midline (anterior central incisors), chisel separation of palatine suture, and separation of the nasal septum. The activation was initiated on the third postoperative day, consisting of two activations, one in the morning and another at night. RESULTS: There were statistically significant expansions in the regions of canines, first and second premolars, first molars, and second molars; respectively, 6.03 mm, 9.82 mm, 8.66 mm, 9.72 mm, and 5.67 mm. The evaluation of the behavior of the support teeth of the expansion appliance regarding the inclination of the dental crowns has shown that an asymmetric vestibularization had taken place, because the values found for the first molars were 6.89º (right) and 9.56º (left); the values for the first premolars were 4.74º (left) and 3.26º (right); this last value was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The surgical technique used in this research has been shown to be efficient to obtain maxillary transversal alterations, and there was dental-alveolar inclination of the support teeth of the expansion appliance.

Este artigo relata o tratamento ortodôntico de um paciente com 14 anos e 6 meses de idade, portador de má oclusão de Classe I de Angle, que apresentava ectopia e impacção do dente 45 e ausência congênita do dente 35. O caso foi tratado com extração do dente 45 e fechamento dos espaços inferiores. Documentações inicial, final e pós-tratamento serão apresentadas e discutidas. Esse caso foi apresentado à Diretoria do Board Brasileiro de Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial (BBO), representando a categoria 7, livre escolha, como parte dos requisitos para a obtenção do título de Diplomado pelo BBO.

This article reports the orthodontic treatment of a 14 year and 6 months old patient that had a Angle Class I malocclusion with an ectopic position and impaction of the tooth 45 and congenitally absence of tooth 35. This case was treated with the extraction of the tooth 45 and space closure in the lower arch. Initial, final and post-treatment orthodontic records will be presented and discussed. This case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (BBO), representing the category 7, free choice, as part of the requirements for achieving the title of BBO diplomate.

OBJETIVO: estudar duas análises subjetivas faciais utilizadas para o diagnóstico ortodôntico, avaliação da agradabilidade facial e definição de Padrão Facial, e verificar a associação existente entre elas. MÉTODOS: utilizou-se 208 fotografias faciais padronizadas (104 laterais e 104 frontais) de 104 indivíduos escolhidos aleatoriamente, as quais foram submetidas à avaliação da agradabilidade por dois grupos distintos (Grupo " Ortodontia" e Grupo " Leigos" ), que classificaram os indivíduos em " agradável" , " aceitável" ou " desagradável" . Os indivíduos também foram classificados quanto ao Padrão Facial por três examinadores calibrados, utilizando-se apenas a vista lateral. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: após a análise estatística, verificou-se que houve associação fortemente positiva entre a agradabilidade facial e o Padrão Facial para a norma lateral, porém não para a frontal, em que os indivíduos tenderam a ser bem classificados mesmo no Padrão II.

AIM: To study two subjective facial analysis commonly used on orthodontic diagnosis and to verify the association between the evaluation of facial attractiveness and Facial Pattern definition. METHODS: Two hundred and eight standardized face photographs (104 in lateral view and 104 in frontal view) of 104 randomly chosen individuals were used in the present study. They were classified as " pleasant" , " acceptable" and " not pleasant" by two distinct groups: " Lay people" and " Orthodontists" . The individuals were either classified according to their Facial Pattern using lateral view images. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: After statistical analysis, it was noted a strong positive concordance between facial attractiveness in lateral view and Facial Pattern, however, frontal view attractiveness classification did not have good concordance with Facial Pattern, tending to have good attractiveness classification even in Facial Pattern II.

OBJETIVOS: comparar os valores médios normais das angulações mesiodistais dentárias, propostos por Ursi, em 1989, com as angulações mesiodistais de caninos, pré-molares e molares inferiores em indivíduos com e sem a presença dos terceiros molares inferiores e idades entre 18 e 25 anos. Além disso, foram comparados os valores das angulações mesiodistais desses dentes nessas duas situações. MÉTODOS: foram utilizadas 40 radiografias ortopantomográficas de indivíduos, de ambos os gêneros, que não receberam tratamento ortodôntico, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo I, constituído por 20 radiografias que não apresentavam os terceiros molares inferiores; e Grupo II, formado por 20 radiografias com os terceiros molares inferiores presentes. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: a análise dos resultados e a análise estatística permitiram concluir que ambos os grupos exibiram pré-molares e molares inferiores mais angulados em sentido mesial, quando comparados à oclusão normal. Por outro lado, a angulação mesiodistal de caninos inferiores mostrou-se semelhante àquela apresentada em casos de oclusão normal. Os dois grupos, quando comparados entre si, exibiram semelhantes valores angulares dos caninos, pré-molares e molares inferiores, de modo que a presença dos terceiros molares não exerceu influência sobre essas angulações mesiodistais dentárias.

AIM: To compare the normal mean values of the mesiodistal axial angulation, proposed by Ursi in 1989, with the mesiodistal axial angulation of canine teeth, premolar and inferior molars in individuals with and without the presence of the third inferior molars and ages between 18 and 25 years. Besides, the values of the mesiodistal axial angulation of these teeth were compared in these two situations. METHODS: Forty panoramic x-rays were used from individuals of both genders that didn't receive orthodontic treatment, divided in two groups: Group I, constituted by 20 x-rays that didn't present the third inferior molars, and Group II, formed by 20 x-rays with the presence of the third inferior molars. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results analysis and the statistical analysis allowed to conclude that both Groups exhibited inferior premolar and molars more angled in mesial direction when compared to the normal occlusion. On the other hand, the mesiodistal axial angulation of inferior canine teeth was similar to the presented in cases of normal occlusion. The two groups, when compared amongst themselves, exhibited similar angular values of the canine teeth, premolar and inferior molars, so that the presence of the third molars didn't exercise influence on these dental angulations.

A grande variedade de fios ortodônticos presente no mercado pode gerar dúvidas quanto à melhor escolha para situações clínicas. Assim, o conhecimento das propriedades mecânicas dos mesmos facilita a escolha para aplicação do movimento ortodôntico na dependência da fase em que o tratamento se encontra. A evolução da tecnologia de manufatura dos fios e a elaboração de novas técnicas ortodônticas geraram a busca por uma melhor qualidade das ligas, a fim de torná-los biologicamente mais efetivos no que diz respeito aos dentes e tecidos de suporte. O presente artigo resume as principais características dos fios utilizados em Ortodontia, em relação ao histórico, propriedades mecânicas e aplicação clínica, de acordo com fases específicas de tratamento.

The huge variety of orthodontic wires brands available in market might generate confusion as regard to the best choice for clinical application. Therefore mechanical properties knowledge about wires would help the professional to apply the best orthodontic technique depending on the treatment phase. The wires manufacturing evolution and the new orthodontic techniques proposed guided the market into the search for better quality alloys, in order to make them biologically more effective to teeth and support tissues. This paper aims to summarize some main characteristics of orthodontic wires related to their history, mechanical properties and clinical application as regard to individual phase of treatment.

INTRODUÇÃO: tanto as avaliações profissionais quanto as avaliações de pessoas leigas não indicam um claro relacionamento entre as características de perfil duro e do perfil mole em pacientes ortodônticos. Por outro lado, há evidências concretas de que o ortodontista possa alterar o perfil facial de seus pacientes. OBJETIVOS: este trabalho visou mensurar a contribuição das características ósseas da maxila e a inclinação dos incisivos superiores à posição do lábio superior. MÉTODOS: uma amostra de 147 pacientes adultos, 58 homens e 89 mulheres, com idades de 15 a 49 anos, sendo a maioria caucasiana, foi retrospectivamente selecionada na clínica particular de um dos autores. Presumiu-se que o perfil estético facial depende dos tecidos ósseos que o suportam e de sua própria constituição, como espessura, tonicidade e composição. O modelo de pesquisa não havia sido desenhado para controlar as características intrínsecas do tecido mole. Para compor as linhas estéticas de Ricketts e de Burstone, as variáveis cefalométricas de maior interesse foram SNA e U1PP, quando simultaneamente avaliadas. RESULTADOS: os coeficientes de regressão, embora estatisticamente significativos, não contribuíram definitivamente para explicar as variáveis de interesse, as linhas estéticas pré-determinadas. Além disso, os resultados encontrados sugeriram uma correlação negativa entre a posição maxilar (SNA) e a inclinação anteroposterior dos incisivos superiores (U1PP), possivelmente devido às compensações impostas pelos lábios e pela língua. CONCLUSÕES: os resultados não apresentaram evidências científicas conclusivas sobre a contribuição dos tecidos duros para o perfil facial de tecido mole.

INTRODUCTION: Professional evaluations and lay person evaluations as well do not show a clear relationship between hard tissue and soft tissue profiles in orthodontic patients. However, there are concrete evidences that the orthodontist can change the facial profile of the patients. AIM: This research project aimed to measure the contribution of the bone structure of the maxilla and the upper incisors inclination to the upper lip profile. METHODS: A sample of 147 adult patients, 58 male and 89 female, aged from 15 to 49 years, the most of them Caucasians, was retrospectively selected from the private practice of one of the authors. It was assumed that the esthetic facial profile depends of the hard tissues that support it besides its own features as thickness, strength and composition. The present research model was not set to control the intrinsic features of the soft tissue. To compose the Ricketts and Burstone esthetic lines, the main cephalometric variables were SNA and U1PP, when concomitantly considered. RESULTS: The regression coefficients, although statistically significant, did not contributed expressively to explain the regard variables, the pre-defined esthetic lines. Furthermore, the results suggested a negative correlation between the maxillary position (SNA) and the anteroposterior inclination of the upper incisors (U1PP), possibly due to the compensatory action of the lips and the tongue. CONCLUSION: The results did not presented conclusive scientific evidences about the contribution of the hard tissues for the soft tissue facial profiles.
