To rehabilitate a fully or partially edentulous patient, we must handle these sites with delicate surgical procedures. There is a large literature presenting attempts to overcome the negative effects of a dental extraction, with the aim of reducing tissue volume loss or restoring the alveolar architecture. In this context, Partial Extraction Therapy (PET) represents a subgroup of interventions to prevent bone loss after extraction using the tooth itself to prevent alveolar bone loss. This literature review aims to make a survey of the published articles on PET, with an emphasis on socket shield technique, and to explain the other techniques such as root burial, pontic-shield and proximal socket-shield, their indications and counter indications in order to deepen the knowledge of these techniques. ABSTRACT This report presents the case of an adult patient with mental and intellectual limitations, whose main complaint was dental aesthetics. Dental treatment was performed at the Piracicaba Dental School and approved by the Ethics Committee (CAAE: 65752322.2.0000.5418). Clinically, the patient had inadequacies in the dental arrangement, with periodontal involvement that put the dental elements at risk. In intraoral clinical aspects, the deficiency was identified as maxillary atresia. The buccolingual inclination of the mandibular anterior teeth highlighted the severe crowding and anterior crossing of these teeth. Dental treatment was carried out aiming at the remission of periodontal and orthodontic problems in an integrated manner and with approaches that allowed greater interaction, participation, and patient compliance during treatment. Supra and subgingival scrapings and extraction of the upper left lateral incisor were performed. After three months of periodontal treatment, orthodontic treatment was started with fixed orthodontic appliances. The main objective was to level and align the teeth in both arches to achieve better aesthetic and functional conditions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, treatment has been discontinued. This resulted in the regression of the results obtained, including regarding self-care. People with disabilities require dental care with specific strategies for their needs, which must be carried out by a multidisciplinary team. RESUMO Este relato apresenta o caso de um paciente adulto com limitações mentais e intelectuais, cuja queixa principal era a estética dental. O tratamento odontológico foi realizado na Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba e aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética (CAAE: 65752322.2.0000.5418). Clinicamente, o paciente apresentava inadequações no arranjo dentário, com comprometimento periodontal, que colocava em risco os elementos dentais. Nos aspectos clínicos intrabucais, a deficiência foi identificada como atresia maxilar. A inclinação vestíbulo-lingual dos dentes anteriores inferiores destacou o apinhamento severo e o cruzamento anterior desses dentes. O tratamento odontológico foi realizado visando à remissão dos problemas periodontais e ortodônticos de forma integrada e com abordagens que permitissem maior interação, participação e adesão do paciente durante o tratamento. Foram realizadas raspagens supra e subgengivais e extração do incisivo lateral superior esquerdo. Após três meses de tratamento periodontal, iniciou-se o tratamento ortodôntico com aparelhos ortodônticos fixos. O objetivo principal foi nivelar e alinhar os dentes em ambas as arcadas para alcançar melhores condições estéticas e funcionais. Devido à pandemia de COVID-19, o tratamento foi interrompido. Isso resultou na regressão dos resultados obtidos, inclusive quanto ao autocuidado. As pessoas com deficiência requerem atendimento odontológico com estratégias específicas para suas necessidades, que devem ser realizadas por uma equipe multidisciplinar. ABSTRACT Objective: To perform an integrative literature review about effectiveness of high-power laser in the treatment of gingival melanin pigmentation. Methods: This research consists of an integrative review conducted from September 2021 to May 2022 seeking to answer the following question: “What is the clinical effectiveness of laser in the treatment of gingival melanin pigmentation?”. The articles were analyzed by two researchers and the information about these was collected with emphasis on the following data: authors, year of publication, study objectives, methodology, results and conclusion. Results: Of the 16 articles initially selected, 08 were excluded (3 literature reviews, 4 internship reports and 1 monography). Thus, 8 articles were selected. Conclusion: Among several types of lasers and techniques for its use, laser, especially diode laser, was the most used technique and presented better aesthetic results, less pain, faster healing, preference and patient satisfaction after treatment. ABSTRACT Sex determination plays a crucial role in the post-mortem identification of human remains. One effective approach for obtaining sex-related data is to use measurements of anatomical structures such as the mandible. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of mandibular radiomorphometric indices from panoramic radiographs (PRs) for the identification of sexual dimorphism. The study sample included 300 PRs of individuals aged 51 to 80 years from the northeastern region of Brazil. Four linear measures and three numerical indices were analyzed with Inkscape® version 1.0.1 for Windows by two blinded evaluators. After statistical analysis, the results showed that the linear measurements obtained from PRs are a reliable method for sex identification. However, the calculated indices of these measurements exhibited lower efficacy for the same purpose. Uma maneira de adquirir dados quanto ao sexo é utilizar mensurações de estruturas como a mandíbula. ABSTRACT Paroxysmal Hemicrania is a trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia described as a severe and strictly unilateral pain, which occurs in paroxysms at orbital, supraorbital and/ or temporal region. A 45-year-old woman presented to an orofacial pain specialist reporting severe, burning, throbbing, strictly right-sided headache associated to ipsilateral autonomic symptoms and orofacial pain. ABSTRACT Periodontitis is an inflammatory clinical condition caused by dysbiotic biofilm that results in progressive destruction of periodontal attachment and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of high-power diode laser as an adjunct to mechanical instrumentation in periodontal pockets of a patient with generalized, stage III, grade C periodontitis. Methods: 126 sites of a patient were examined at the Clinical Research Laboratory (LabClin) of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), where the parameters of probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BoP) were evaluated at the beginning of the study and after 3 and 6 months of basic therapy. All sites received non-surgical periodontal treatment which corresponds to scaling and root planing (SRP) and coronary polishing. The deep periodontal pockets with PD ≥ 5 mm, received the adjuvant therapy with diode laser light. Results: There was a significant improvement of periodontal parameters of PD, CAL and BoP in all treated sites. In those with PD ≥ 5 mm, the results were similar, with statistically significant reduction of PD, CAL and BoP before and after treatment. After 6 months, all periodontal pockets with PD ≥ 5mm were reduced to values lower than 3. ABSTRACT Fixed implant-supported complete maxillary dentures aim to rehabilitate aesthetic, phonetic, and functional aspects of edentulous arches. A previous prosthetic preparation without a flange in the anterior sector makes it possible to evaluate the labial support and the existing space for the future prosthesis. Thus, it allows the most appropriate choice of the type of rehabilitation and surgical technique. However, follow-up studies have shown that when proceeding this way, problems in the posterior sector are still occurring, such as the lack of vertical space for an adequate bar design and concave internal designs, which make access to hygiene difficult. Faced with the problem, the aim of this study is to report a clinical case in which the previous prosthetic preparation included the removal of the flange also from the posterior sector during the teeth try-in and the duplication of this assembly in a transparent multifunctional guide that allowed the visualization of the amount of bone removal needed. Um preparo protético prévio sem flange no setor anterior permite avaliar o suporte labial e o espaço presente para a futura prótese, auxilinado na escolha do tipo de reabilitação e da técnica cirúrgica mais adequada. No entanto, estudos de acompanhamento tem mostrado que ao proceder dessa maneira ainda estão ocorrendo problemas no setor posterior, como falta de espaço vertical para um desenho adequado da barra e desenhos internos côncavos, que dificultam o acesso à higienização. Frente ao problema, o objetivo do presente trabalho é relatar um caso clínico no qual o preparo protético prévio incluiu a remoção do flange também do setor posterior durante a prova dos dentes e a duplicação dessa montagem em um guia multifuncional transparente permitindo a visualização da quantidade de remoção óssea necessária. ABSTRACT Dental trauma can happen at any stage of life; however, it is very common in preschool and school aged children. Dislocation injuries in the primary dentition are the most commonly described traumatic dental injuries in the literature. Through the study of a clinical case, this article presents the clinical conduct performed in the case of trauma of lateral dislocation with involvement of a fracture of the buccal bone plate in order to assist the clinical practice of dentists who care for children. RESUMO Traumatismos dentários podem acontecer em qualquer fase da vida, entretanto, é muito comum em crianças na idade pré-escolar e escolar. As lesões de luxação na dentição decídua são as lesões dentárias traumáticas mais comumente descritas na literatura. Através do relato de caso clínico, o artigo apresenta a conduta clínica realizada diante um trauma de luxação lateral com acometimento de fratura de tábua óssea vestibular no intuito de auxiliar a prática clínica de cirurgiões-dentistas que atendem crianças. O tratamento realizado neste caso clínico levou em consideração a magnitude do deslocamento, o grau de desenvolvimento do elemento dentário e sua relação com o germe do permanente, o tempo de procura após o trauma e o grau de cooperação da criança diante o tratamento sugerido. ABSTRACT Objectives: This study aimed to establish the causal profile of searches for urgent dental care in a Basic Health Unit, its outcomes and main complications that occurred. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study with a quantitative approach was carried out. The sample consisted of patients assisted in the demand of dental urgency. Data were collected through the electronic medical records of all patients treated by residents of the Multiprofessional Residency in Family Health, at the São Francisco Health Unit, located in the city of Cariacica/ES, from March 2021 to March 2022. Results: A total of 212 emergency dental visits were evaluated, of patients of two genders, having females being predominant (57.5%), aged between 1 and 75 years, with toothache as the main complaint (86.8 %). The most frequent diagnoses were dental caries (31.1%), followed by irreversible pulpitis (20.8%) and unsatisfactory restorations (7.5%). Accordingly, the most common emergency treatments performed at the service were: endodontic access (34.0%), tooth extractions (28.8%) and restorations (19.8%). Conclusions: The profile of urgent care surveyed was predominantly female, with an average age of 34 years, with toothache as the main complaint and dental caries as the most common diagnosis. The main interventions performed were endodontic access and tooth extraction. RESUMO Objetivos: Este estudo objetivou estabelecer o perfil clínico e epidemiológico dos atendimentos de urgência odontológica em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde, seus desfechos e principais intervenções realizadas. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo descritivo, transversal, retrospectivo, com abordagem quantitativa. A amostra foi composta por prontuários de pacientes atendidos na demanda da urgência odontológica. Os dados foram coletados através dos prontuários eletrônicos de todos os pacientes atendidos na Residência Multiprofissional em Saúde da Família, na Unidade de Saúde de São Francisco, localizada na cidade de Cariacica/ES, no período de março de 2021 a março de 2022. Resultados: Foram avaliados 212 prontuários, com pacientes de ambos os sexos, sendo o sexo feminino predominante (57,5%), com a idade variando entre 1 e 75 anos, tendo a odontalgia como a principal queixa (86,8%). Os diagnósticos mais frequentes foram a cárie dentária (31,1%), seguido de quadros de pulpite irreversível (20,8%) e restaurações insatisfatórias (7,5%). Em consonância, os tratamentos de urgências mais realizados no serviço foram: acesso endodôntico (34,0%), exodontias (28,8%) e restaurações (19,8%). RESUMO A prótese parcial removível é uma opção eficaz de reabilitação para pacientes que passaram por cirurgia de maxilectomia parcial em decorrência de tumores maxilares, ou seja, remoção cirúrgica parcial do osso maxilar. A prótese parcial removível deve ser projetada para recuperar as funções mastigatória, fonética e estética, contribuindo assim na melhoria da autoestima e ajudando o paciente a retornar às atividades sociais. Durante a anamnese, é de grande importância verificar o estado geral e psicológico do paciente, suas expectativas e limitações, garantir o acompanhamento frequente para evitar complicações e garantir a durabilidade da prótese. O planejamento protético é uma etapa crítica e pode apresentar desafios, especialmente na obtenção de retenção, estabilidade e suportes adequados. RESUMO A revisão sistemática da literatura teve como objetivo comparar os métodos de moldagem convencional e digital para confecção de próteses parciais fixas com a literatura atual e verificar a aplicabilidade dos métodos na rotina clínica. Foi realizada uma busca na base de dados PubMed utilizando as palavras-chave: Denture, Partial, Fixed e Dental Impression Technique de 2017 a 2022, de estudos publicados na íntegra, em inglês e gratuitamente. Foram obtidos 520 artigos do PubMed, sendo 501 de 2017 a 2022. Após a leitura dos títulos e resumos, 12 artigos foram excluídos. Ao final, foram selecionados 6 artigos, sendo posteriormente adicionados 6 artigos por referência cruzada, totalizando 12 artigos. ABSTRACT The systematic review of the literature aimed to compare the conventional and digital impression methods for making fixed partial dentures using the current literature and to verify the applicability of the methods in the clinical routine. A search was carried out in the PubMed database using the keywords: Denture, Partial, Fixed and Dental Impression Technique from 2017 to 2022, of studies published in full, in English and free of charge. 520 articles were obtained from PubMed, 501 of which were from 2017 to 2022. ABSTRACT The immediate rehabilitation of the posterior region of the mandible with dental implants, expands the set of possible actions for the dental surgeon, in the face of tooth loss. The purpose of this study is to describe two cases of single rehabilitation of mandibular molars with hybrid internal tapered implants indicated for immediate loading in post-extraction socket, associated with the maintenance of the prosthetic and peri-implant space. Implants with macrogeometry and surface treatment (Hydrophilic) were used to optimize primary stability, as well as the type of internal connection and prosthetic abutments that allows better accommodation and healing of adjacent tissues, and protection of the bone graft. Different methodologies of surgical guides did not influence the final result. The predictability of associating techniques and components can be observed in the 2-year follow-up. O intuito desse estudo é descrever dois casos de reabilitação unitária de molares inferiores com implantes cônicos internos híbridos indicados para carregamento imediato em alvéolos pós-extração, associado a manutenção do espaço protético e peri-implantar. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ozone as an adjuvant factor in the treatment of periodontal diseases. A systematic review was carried out using the PubMed, LILACS/BIREME, CoChrane, and Scielo databases and manual searches. Clinical studies published in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, between 1950 and 2020 that evaluated the effects of ozone in the treatment of periodontal diseases were included. The search resulted in 178 articles, of which 24 met the proposed eligibility criteria and were selected for this review. The risk of bias was assessed for each selected study in accordance with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool - version 5.1.0. The selected studies evaluated the effect of ozone therapy on periodontitis, gingivitis, and peri-implant diseases. It was observed that the ozone in its oily form presented the best clinical results. In cases of periodontitis, it was concluded that ozone therapy in the gaseous form did not bring any additional benefit. With respect to gingivitis, ozone provided faster remission compared to the control group. And in peri-implant disease cases, ozone had the capacity to reduce the development of mucositis. Regarding microbiology, it was observed that ozone can continuously and significantly reduce periodontal microorganisms; however, with no difference from control groups. Further studies with adequate control of biases are suggested, using ozone in the oily or aqueous form, which are the most promising forms, also evaluating the possible effectiveness of ozone by-products. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia do uso do ozônio como fator adjuvante no tratamento das doenças periodontais. Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática utilizando as bases de dados PubMed, LILACS/BIREME, CoChrane, Scielo e pesquisa manual. Foram incluídos estudos clínicos publicados em inglês, espanhol, português e francês entre 1950 e 2020, que avaliaram os efeitos do ozônio no tratamento de doenças periodontais. A busca resultou em 178 artigos, destes 24 estudos atenderam aos critérios de elegibilidade propostos e foram selecionados para esta revisão. Foi realizada a avaliação do risco de viés em cada estudo selecionado de acordo com a ferramenta de avaliação de risco de viés Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool - versão 5.1.0. Os estudos selecionados avaliaram o efeito da ozonioterapia na periodontite, gengivite e em doenças peri-implantares. ABSTRACT Context: Digital study models have become a safe and advantageous alternative for diagnosis and planning in dentistry. Despite the superior characteristics in comparison with traditional plaster models, professionals seem to resist the use of new technologies. Aims: To assess the level of knowledge and the use of digital models through a questionnaire applied to dental professionals. Methods: A questionnaire with 12 multiple-choice questions about plaster models, digital, and use of the 3Shape - 3D viewer software was answered by 76 orthodontists (42 women and 34 men; mean age =37.82 years (SD ± 7.60)) and 30 general dental surgeons (18 women and 12 men; mean age of 33.93 years (SD ± 8.45)) in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. Data were tabulated in Excel spreadsheets and then analyzed using the SPSS statistical software version 20. An absolute analysis of frequency and percentage of responses was performed. Results: Most professionals reported using plaster models and claimed their low cost as justification for their use (P = 0.001). Aware of the benefits of digital models, professionals of both classes highlighted the facilitated storage and search for information as the main advantages, the cost and infrastructure as the main disadvantages. Apesar das características superiores em comparação aos modelos tradicionais de gesso, os profissionais parecem resistir ao uso de novas tecnologias. Objetivos: Avaliar o nível de conhecimento e a utilização de modelos digitais por meio de questionário aplicado a profissionais da área odontológica. Material e Métodos: Questionário com 12 questões de múltipla escolha sobre modelos de gesso, digitais e uso do software 3Shape - 3D viewer foi respondido por 76 ortodontistas (42 mulheres e 34 homens; idade média = 37,82 anos (DP = ± 7,60) ) e 30 cirurgiões-dentistas gerais (18 mulheres e 12 homens; média de idade de 33,93 anos (DP = ± 8,45)) em Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil.
