ABSTRACT In this article I follow arguing for a face of ethical hermeneutics related to the vision and posture of those who understand the other, be it a person, be it culture, be it nature. This project was developed based on Hans-Georg Gadamer. To carry out this scope, I initially made explicit his criticism of modern rationality – which reifies the other – as well as his recommendation to treat them as another being. Next, I substantiate the proposal of an ‘ Hermeneuticus I’ that understands the other under the Kantian imperative that, namely, says ‘not to treat the other as an object, but as an end in themselves’ and also guided by the Golden Rule of morality, according to which one must ‘treat others as he/she would like to be treated themselves’. In this article, I will incorporate – within the project of an ethical hermeneutics – the proposal of a Copper Rule of morals as developed by Yong Huang, according to which we must understand and ‘treat the other as the other would like to be treated’, that is, from their expectation as recipient and from their respective ethos embodied in the formulation “do unto others as they would have you do unto them”. Having done that, I propose the interweaving of both in what I call the Platinum Rule where the ‘self treats the other as the self would like to be treated’ and, at the same time, ‘treats the other as the other would like to be treated’.

RESUMO Neste artigo continuarei fundamentando a face da hermenêutica ética relativa à visão e à postura de quem compreende o outro, seja pessoa, seja cultura, seja natureza. Tenho desenvolvido este projeto a partir de Hans-Georg Gadamer. Para realizar esse escopo explicitei inicialmente suas críticas à racionalidade moderna – que reifica o outro – bem como sua recomendação de tratá-lo enquanto outro. A seguir fundamentei a proposta de um Eu hermeneuticus que compreende o outro sob a égide do imperativo kantiano, a saber, de não tratar o outro como objeto, mas como fim em si mesmo e pautado também pela Regra de Ouro da moral segundo a qual se deve tratar o outro como eu gostaria de ser tratado. Neste artigo, vou incorporar ao projeto de uma hermenêutica ética a proposta da Copper Rule da moral desenvolvida por Yong Huang, segundo a qual precisamos compreender e tratar o outro como ele gostaria de ser tratado, isto é, a partir da sua expectativa e do seu ethos corporificada na formulação “faça aos outros o que eles gostariam que você fizesse a eles”. Feito isso, proponho o entrelaçamento de ambas no que denomino de Regra de Platina, em que o eu trata o outro como gostaria de ser tratado e, ao mesmo tempo, trata o outro como ele gostaria de ser tratado.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to propose an understanding of Hegel’s aesthetics in terms of its relationship with traditional aesthetics and the aesthetics of his time. In this sense, we highlight the figure of Goethe, both as a creator and critic, and the way in which Hegel rearranges the discourses of art theory, art history and art critique, recovering August Schlegel and Herder’s approaches. Hegel’s aesthetic system reflects this rearrangement in its three parts: on the ideal, the forms and the particular of art.

RESUMO Trata-se de propor uma compreensão da estética de Hegel tendo em vista sua relação com a estética tradicional e a de sua época. Neste sentido, ressalta-se a figura de Goethe, como instância criadora e crítica, e o modo como Hegel rearranja os discursos da teoria da arte, da história da arte e da crítica de arte, recuperando as abordagens de August Schlegel e Herder. O sistema estético de Hegel reflete este rearranjo em suas três partes: sobre o ideal, as formas e as artes particulares.

ABSTRACT By defending the general thesis that “private vices” were indispensable to obtaining “public benefits,” Bernard Mandeville’s The Fable of the Bees provoked outraged reactions and earned its author the reputation of an enemy of virtue. Among the criticisms made against him, the one according to which he had cunningly used a rigorist conception of virtue to demonstrate the impossibility of any genuinely virtuous action stands out. Taking this criticism as a motto and trying to see to what extent it can be pertinent or not, this paper intends to examine the thesis contained in the subtitle of the Fable considering the philosophical project in which it is inserted: that of an “anatomy of the invisible part of man”. From there, we hope it will be possible to indicate what questions The Fable of the Bees aims to answer and how it does answer them, what place it holds for morality, as well as which are the consequences of the Mandevillian critique of morals.

RESUMO Ao defender a tese geral de que “vícios privados” eram indispensáveis à obtenção de “benefícios públicos”, a Fábula das abelhas, de Bernard Mandeville, suscitou reações indignadas e rendeu a seu autor a reputação de inimigo da virtude. Entre as críticas que lhe foram feitas, chama a atenção aquela segundo a qual ele teria se valido ardilosamente de uma concepção rigorista da virtude para demonstrar a impossibilidade de qualquer ação genuinamente virtuosa. Tomando essa crítica como mote e buscando ver em que medida ela pode, ou não, ser pertinente, o presente artigo pretende examinar a tese contida no subtítulo da Fábula a partir da consideração do projeto filosófico no qual ela se inscreve: o de uma “anatomia da parte invisível do homem”. A partir daí, esperamos ser possível indicar a quais questões A Fábula das abelhas pretende responder e como o faz, bem como qual lugar ela resguarda para a moralidade e quais as consequências da crítica mandevilliana da moral.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the role of philosophy in education for democratic experiences from Eric Weil’s writings on education. It begins with the question of education in the modern society from two of Weil’s concepts: “delusional reason” and the “gospel of pure violence”. The first refers to the scientific rationality of our civilization; the second expresses the language of neo-populist movements of a fascist nature. Both represent pressing challenges to education and, at the same time, forms of refusal of sensible discourse. Finally, anchored in the Weilian vision of democracy as a space for public discussion, the text considers the role of philosophy for education and democracy.

RESUMO Este artigo analisa o papel da filosofia na educação para experiências democráticas a partir dos escritos de Eric Weil sobre a educação. Para tanto, ele inicia com a pergunta pela educação na sociedade moderna, a partir de seus dois conceitos: a “razão delirante” e o “evangelho da violência pura”. O primeiro remete à racionalidade científica de nossa civilização, o segundo exprime a linguagem própria de movimentos neopopulistas de feição fascista. Os dois representam desafios prementes à educação e, ao mesmo tempo, formas de recusa do discurso sensato. Por último, ancorado na visão weiliana da democracia como espaço de discussão pública, retoma o tema pensando o papel da filosofia para a educação e para a democracia.

ABSTRACT I argue for a version of evaluative sentimentalism according to which (i) affective responses are appearances of value and (ii) value judgments can repudiate or assent to these appearances. The starting point of my argument is Giovanna Colombetti’s enactive conception of affectivity. According to Colombetti, an affective being is one that through its sense-making activity enacts meaningful value-laden distinctions and, thus, brings forth an Umwelt (i.e., an environment that has a specific significance for it). The elements of that Umwelt strike the affective being as meaningful or valuable and to be thus struck is to be affected by those things. In that sense, affective responses can be characterized as appearances of value. I hold that appearances of value are best understood as perceptions of affordances. This view has consequences for our understanding of value judgments. The evaluative concepts that are relevant to us must map onto distinctions that are meaningful to us. As such, relevant evaluative concepts must capture the significance of the elements in the Umwelt that affect the organism. The upshot is that the significance value judgments ascribe to their objects can coincide with the meaning with which the object is presented to us in an affective response.

RESUMO Defendo uma versão de sentimentalismo avaliativo segundo a qual (i) respostas afetivas são aparências de valor e (ii) juízos de valor podem repudiar ou assentir a essas aparências. O ponto de partida do meu argumento é a concepção enativa de afetividade de Giovanna Colombetti. De acordo com Colombetti, um ser afetivo é um que, por meio de sua atividade de produção de sentido, traça distinções significativas, permeadas de valores e, assim, produz um Umwelt (isto é, um ambiente que tem um significado específico para ele). Os elementos desse Umwelt impactam o ser afetivo como significativos e ser assim impactado é ter uma resposta afetiva. Nesse sentido, respostas afetivas podem ser caracterizadas como aparências de valor. Sustento que as aparências de valor são melhor compreendidas como percepções de affordances. Essa tese tem consequências para nossa compreensão de juízos de valor. Os conceitos avaliativos que são relevantes para nós devem corresponder a distinções que são significativas para nós. Assim, conceitos avaliativos relevantes devem capturar o significado de elementos do Umwelt que afetam o organismo. O resultado é que o significado que juízos de valor atribuem a seus objetos pode coincidir com o significado com o qual o objeto nos é apresentado em uma resposta afetiva.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to show that positivism and post-positivism’s philosophical and political bases, although distinct, have significant similarities. We’ll identify such similarities from the bibliographic review of two important works for this debate: “Pure Theory of Law” by Hans Kelsen and “Justice for Hedgehogs” by Ronald Dworkin. From the clarification of theoretical similarities of these two pieces our specific objective will be subdivided into establish the genuine agreements and disagreements of these two currents of thought in relation to the concept of justice. That allows to affirm as true the hypothesis that judgmental values are always moral, and that there is an objective moral value that determines, conditions, and justifies them. This will result in the notion that the divergence between Kelsenian positivism and Dworkinian post-positivism is based on metaphysics and is, in fact, a genuine disagreement.

RESUMO O objetivo geral deste artigo é fazer ver que as bases de pensamento filosófico e político do positivismo e do pós-positivismo, embora distintas, possuem semelhanças significativas. Identificaremos tais semelhanças a partir da revisão bibliográfica de duas obras importantes para este debate: Reine Rechtslehre, de Hans Kelsen, e Justice for Hedgehogs, de Ronald Dworkin. A partir da clarificação das semelhanças teóricas, nosso objetivo específico se subdividirá em estabelecer quais são os acordos e desacordos genuínos dessas duas correntes de pensamento em relação ao conceito de justiça que, por via de consequência, nos permitem afirmar como verdadeira a hipótese de que juízos valorativos são sempre morais, e há um valor objetivo moral que os determina, condiciona e justifica. Disso resultará a noção de que a divergência entre o positivismo kelseniano e o pós-positivismo dworkiniano se assenta na metafísica e é, de fato, um desacordo genuíno.

RESUMEN En el presente trabajo se intentará determinar los aspectos fundamentales del pensamiento de Laclau a partir de la consideración del papel central que tienen en él el sujeto y lo otro, tanto en el ámbito individual como en el colectivo o político. Si bien las diferencias son condición de la actualización de la consciencia, se mostrará que la concepción del sujeto de Laclau presenta ciertas insuficiencias, las cuales se vuelven especialmente relevantes al momento de abordar lo político. Es pertinente advertir, como hace Laclau, respecto de los límites de una concepción política cuya base es una identidad individual y colectiva soberana. Sin embargo, se ha de reparar en el significado unitario que también define la existencia individual y colectiva. Para la consideración de la relación de identidad y diferencia, se acudirá a discusiones de alta significación en este asunto, y que tienen lugar en el contexto del idealismo y el romanticismo alemán (en particular a Kant Fichte, Hölderlin y Schelling). Hecha la salvedad sobre la dificultad indicada, se tratará de mostrar en qué sentido la concepción política antagonística de Laclau es adecuada para una comprensión no reduccionista de la indeterminación y alteridad que constan con lo político, y que vuelven imposible e indeseable su reducción, sin resguardos suficientes, según parámetros racionales.

ABSTRACT In the present work, we will determine the fundamental aspects of Laclau’s thought by considering the central role that the subject and the other have in it, both in the individual and in the collective or political sphere. Although the difference is a condition for unfolding consciousness, we will show that Laclau’s conception of the subject presents certain insufficiencies. They become especially relevant when addressing the political sphere. It is pertinent to warn, as Laclau does, regarding the limits of a political conception whose base is a sovereign individual and collective identity. However, one must pay attention to the unitary meaning that also defines individual and collective existence. To consider the relationship between identity and difference, we will resort to discussions of high significance on this matter, which take place in the context of German idealism and romanticism (in particular, we will attend to Kant Fichte, Hölderlin and Schelling). Having made the caveat about the difficulty mentioned above, we will show in what sense Laclau’s antagonistic political conception is adequate for a non-reductionist understanding of the indeterminacy and otherness that are part of the political sphere and that make its strict reduction to rational parameters impossible and undesirable.

ABSTRACT This paper will follow a path that intends to go beyond the bifurcating interpretations between ahistorical essentialism and historicist relativism with regard to the theoretical elaboration of “human nature” by the young Marx, analyzing it from the conception of the body as a dialectical unit between nature and history as it appears in his Manuscripts of 1844. Why does Marx focus on a theoretical elaboration of the production of human corporality while criticizing work under capital in these Manuscripts that represent, in his trajectory, the beginning of his studies on political economy and the inauguration of his dialectical materialism? From an analysis of the notebooks that make up these Manuscripts, we will demonstrate that there is a theorization of the body that involves transhistorical aspects - the vital connection with the “inorganic body” that is the earth - and historical in the form of mediation of this relationship and that such theorizing has the methodological value of providing historical-materialist premises as a counterpoint to the ahistorical premises of political economy as well as the inversion of the Hegelian dialectic under the starting point of the “corporeal human”, enabling a point of view from which we can overcome a way of “pathological” mediation.

RESUMO O presente artigo trilhará um caminho que pretende ir além das interpretações bifurcatórias entre essencialismo a-histórico e relativismo historicista no que diz respeito à elaboração teórica de “natureza humana” pelo jovem Marx, analisando-a a partir da concepção de corpo como unidade dialética entre natureza e história conforme aparece em seus Manuscritos de 1844. Afinal, por que Marx se direciona a uma elaboração teórica da produção da corporalidade humana enquanto faz a crítica do trabalho sob o capital nestes Manuscritos que representam, em sua trajetória, o início de seus estudos sobre economia política e a inauguração de seu materialismo dialético? A partir de uma análise dos cadernos que compõem estes Manuscritos, buscaremos demonstrar que há neles uma teorização do corpo que tanto envolve aspectos transhistóricos – a ligação vital com o “corpo inorgânico” que é a terra – quanto históricos na forma de mediação dessa relação e que tal teorização tem como valor metodológico o fornecimento de premissas histórico-materialistas como contraponto às premissas a-históricas da economia política bem como a inversão da dialética hegeliana sob o ponto de partida do “humano corpóreo”, possibilitando um ponto de vista a partir do qual podemos vir a superar um modo de mediação “patológico”.

ABSTRACT Faria’s recent publication aims to show that “if anti-individualism is correct, then the obscurity of validity is more widespread than we need to assume for present purposes.” In rejecting “a variety of exculpating moves, designed to shield the rationality of the possibly unlucky reasoner,” Faria suggests that content externalism can drastically affect our self-understanding as rational beings. I am afraid I have to disagree. Faria overintellectualizes reasoning, always performed from the first-person perspective and is subject to reflexive control by the reasoner. To be sure, content externalism shows that sound reasoning is contingent on the broad environment and therefore does not depend exclusively on the logical abilities of the living being but is a matter of logical luck. Nonetheless, content externalism is no threat to rationality. My diagnosis: By adopting Wittgenstein’s strategy of “bringing words back home,” Faria overlooks the achievements of cognitive science: in its simplest form, “transitive inference,” rationality pervades the animal kingdom.

RESUMO A recente publicação de Faria tem como objetivo demonstrar que, “se o anti-individualismo estiver correto, então a obscuridade da validade é mais ampla do que necessitamos presumir para os objetivos atuais.” Através da rejeição de “uma variedade de movimentos exculpatórios, projetados para blindar a racionalidade de um pensador possivelmente azarado,” Faria sugere que o externalismo de conteúdo pode afetar drasticamente nossa autocompreensão como seres racionais. Temo que tenha que discordar. Faria superintelectualiza o pensamento, sempre performado da perspectiva de primeira pessoa e é sujeito ao controle reflexivo pelo pensador. Para ter certeza, o externalismo de conteúdo mostra que um pensamento saudável é contingente no amplo ambiente e, assim, não depende exclusivamente das habilidades lógicas do ser vivo, mas é uma questão de sorte lógica. Apesar disso, o externalismo de conteúdo não é ameaça à racionalidade. Meu diagnóstico: através da adoção da estratégia de Wittgenstein de “trazer as palavras de volta pra casa”, Faria negligencia as conquistas da ciência cognitiva: na sua forma mais simples, a “inferência transitiva,” a racionalidade pervade o reino animal.

RESUMEN El artículo analiza el concepto de nivelación como fenómeno político y social en la sociedad de masas del siglo XIX por parte de Tocqueville y Kierkegaard. Se explica el uso de la nivelación en las obras de ambos autores y, posteriormente, se realiza un análisis comparativo que permite encontrar los aspectos en común y las diferencias que existen entre los dos. El análisis permite comprender la complejidad del fenómeno de la nivelación y de la igualdad democrática, considerando sus efectos sobre los individuos y sus vínculos sociales en la sociedad de masas.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes the concept of leveling as a political and social phenomenon in the mass society of the nineteenth century by Alexis de Tocqueville and Søren Kierkegaard. The use of this concept in the works of both authors is explained and, subsequently, a comparative analysis is carried out to find the common aspects and the differences that exist between the two. This analysis allows us how to understand the complexity of the phenomenon of leveling and of democratic equality, considering their effects on individuals and their social ties in the mass society.

ABSTRACT The sacred writings of a wide variety of religious traditions and the reports of saints and mystics of those same traditions present the spiritual domain in a paradoxical and mysterious manner, often incomprehensible. Those writings contrast starkly with the philosophical and theological discourse on those matters, which sought to describe clearly and precisely what is said ambiguously, metaphorically and indirectly in them. This paper advances an argument originally put forth by William James, according to which religious beliefs are grounded not on philosophical and theological theories, but on religious experiences. We argue that an epistemology of religion based on those experiences cannot merely imitate an epistemology of ordinary objects (e.g., physical objects), but has to incorporate intuitions and feelings as sources of knowledge alongside more traditional sources.

RESUMO Os textos sagrados das mais diversas tradições religiosas e os relatos de santos e místicos dessas mesmas tradições apresentam o domínio espiritual de modo paradoxal e misterioso, seguidamente incompreensível. Esses textos contrastam fortemente com o discurso filosófico e teológico sobre esses mesmos assuntos, que procurou descrever de modo claro e bem definido o que naqueles textos é dito de modo ambíguo, metafórico e indireto. Este artigo desenvolve um argumento originalmente formulado por William James, segundo o qual o fundamento das crenças religiosas são as experiências religiosas e não as teorias filosóficas ou teológicas. Argumentamos que uma epistemologia da religião baseada naquelas experiências não pode meramente imitar uma epistemologia de objetos comuns (os objetos físicos, por exemplo), mas precisa incorporar intuições e sentimentos como fontes de conhecimento ao lado das fontes mais tradicionais.

ABSTRACT In this paper, I intend to offer an evolutionary interpretation of the concept of sympathy in Hume’s ethical theory based on the general tenets of contemporary evolutionary ethical theory. By presenting the conceptual frameworks that make up these theories, my argument involves specifying that, for both of them, the psychological mechanism of sympathy seems to figure as an essential evolutionary trait of moral and altruistic behavior in the human species. In the context of evolutionary biology, two evolutionary models have been developed to explain the logic of human altruistic behavior: i) kin selection and ii) multilevel selection. I argue, based on textual evidence in Hume’s work, that the psychological mechanism of sympathy seems to be best explained by the multilevel selection model. I conclude, then, by highlighting some important contributions that this evolutionary interpretation can make to the general plausibility of Hume’s ethical theory.

RESUMO Neste artigo, pretendo oferecer uma interpretação evolucionária do conceito de simpatia na teoria ética de Hume com base nos preceitos gerais da teoria ética evolucionária contemporânea. Ao apresentar os arcabouços conceituais que compõem estas teorias, meu argumento envolve especificar que, para ambas, o mecanismo psicológico da simpatia parece figurar como um traço evolutivo essencial do comportamento moral e altruísta na espécie humana. No contexto da biologia evolucionária, dois modelos evolucionários foram desenvolvidos para explicar a lógica do comportamento altruísta humano: i) seleção de parentesco e ii) seleção multinível. Argumento, com base em evidência textual na obra de Hume, que o mecanismo psicológico da simpatia parece ser mais adequadamente explicado pelo modelo de seleção multinível. Concluo, então, destacando algumas contribuições importantes que esta interpretação evolucionária pode oferecer para a plausibilidade geral da teoria ética de Hume.

ABSTRACT The order assumed in the construction of the Encyclopédie, edited by Diderot and D’Alembert, supposes an epistemic and normative model that not only conditions the formation of the canon as a referential horizon, but simultaneously produces a template for the political administration of life, with significant consequences for the relationship between canonical discourse and biopolitics within Enlightenment. The article proposes an analysis of this double normative device, with its impasses and complex strategies of enunciation, through the investigation of the nexuses of continuity between the epistemology of mathematics developed by D’Alembert and his controversial position regarding inoculation, the preventive treatment against smallpox available in the eighteenth century.

RESUMO A ordem assumida na construção da Encyclopédie de Diderot e D’Alembert supõe um modelo normativo epistêmico que não apenas condiciona a formação do cânone como horizonte de referencialidade, mas, simultaneamente, produz um modo de administração político da vida, com consequências significativas para a relação entre o discurso canônico e a biopolítica iluministas. O artigo propõe uma análise desse duplo dispositivo normatizador, com seus impasses e estratégias complexas de enunciação, por meio da investigação dos nexos de continuidade entre a epistemologia da matemática desenvolvida por D’Alembert e sua polêmica posição em relação à inoculação, o tratamento preventivo contra a varíola disponível no século XVIII.

ABSTRACT In this paper, I will examine Foucault’s “The Confessions of the Flesh”, with the purpose of understanding firstly why we find in Christianity and especially in Augustine’s work the most advanced matrimonial technology as an institution of internment of desire and fundamental of society. Then, starting from the thesis that “The Confessions of the Flesh” can be appreciated as another Anti-Oedipus, I will propose that they are not only an anti-psychoanalytic work, but also an anti-structuralist one, with the recognition that Judeo-Christian societies are not regulated by parenting deduced from the prohibition of incest, but by a conjugality prior to parenthood and metaphysically pre-incestuous. Finally, I will rehearse an interpretive experiment of “The Confessions of the Flesh” to reconsider theological foundations of man, in comparison with The Pseudo Anti-Narcissus, by Viveiros de Castro.

RESUMO Neste artigo, examinarei “As confissões da carne”, de Foucault, como propósito de compreender primeiramente por que encontramos no cristianismo e especialmente na obra de Agostinho a mais avançada tecnologia matrimonial como uma instituição de internação do desejo e fundamental da sociedade. Em seguida, a partir da tese de que “As confissões da carne” podem ser apreciadas como um outro O Anti-Édipo, proporei que elas não são somente uma obra antipsicanalítica, mas também antiestruturalista, com o reconhecimento de que as sociedades judaico-cristãs não são reguladas pela parentalidade deduzida da proibição do incesto e sim por uma conjugalidade anterior à parentalidade e metafisicamente pré-incestuosa. Por fim, ensaiarei um experimento interpretativo de “As confissões da carne” para reconsiderar fundações teológicas do homem, em cotejo com o pseudo O Anti-Narciso, de Viveiros de Castro.

ABSTRACT The question of the “common” has earned prominence in capitalism’s current stage, marked by the regression of the welfare state, privatization of services essential to life, and aggravation of income concentration and social inequalities around the world, in tandem with the exponential increase in the production of goods and wealth. We will address the question of the “common” based on two current views on the subject, those of the pairs Negri/Hardt and Dardot/Laval, particularly regarding the latter pair’s critique of the former. But we will open the discussion with Robert Zemeckis’ film “Cast Away”, starred by Tom Hanks, with which we will introduce the material and immaterial dimensions of the “common”. We will highlight, about the film, the importance of others in our lives and the question of otherness, which we will discuss through the thoughts of Winnicott and Merleau-Ponty. Finally, we try to unite the two perspectives developed in the article, i.e., that of our relationships with others and that of the “common”.

RESUMO A questão do “comum” ganhou proeminência na fase atual do capitalismo, marcada pelo retrocesso do Estado de bem-estar social, a privatização de serviços essenciais à vida, e o agravamento da concentração de renda e das desigualdades sociais no mundo, concomitantes ao aumento exponencial da produção de bens e riquezas. Abordaremos a questão do “comum” a partir de duas referências atuais sobre o assunto, os pares Negri/ Hardt e Dardot/Laval, sobretudo a partir da crítica do segundo par ao primeiro. Mas iniciaremos a discussão com o filme “O Náufrago”, dirigido por Robert Zemeckis e estrelado por Tom Hanks, com o qual introduziremos as dimensões material e imaterial do “comum”. Destacaremos do filme a importância de outrem em nossas vidas e a questão da alteridade, cuja discussão faremos por meio dos pensamentos de Winnicott e Merleau-Ponty. Encerraremos procurando reunir as perspectivas da relação com o outro e do “comum”, desenvolvidas no artigo.
