Resumo A área de Serra Negra, composta por 77 sítios arqueológicos, está localizada na face nordeste da Serra do Espinhaço Meridional, Brasil. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os dados paleoambientais e arqueológicos dessa importante área no contexto da ocupação indígena na América do Sul, contribuindo para a discussão sobre o que tem sido chamado de Hiato do Arcaico. A discussão baseia-se no que está consolidado na literatura sobre ocupações do Planalto Central Brasileiro durante o Holoceno, destacando também especificidades regionais. Como conclusão, demonstramos que naquela região o Hiato durante o Holoceno Médio não ocorreu, pois a região permaneceu continuamente ocupada nesse período, com uso persistente e articulação de paisagens que estavam em contínua demanda, permitindo, assim, a ideia de um território estruturado ao longo dessas ocupações, bem como a permanência das tecnologias sociais utilizadas para a produção da cultura material. Portanto, a conjunção de contextos, cronologias e dados arqueológicos e paleoambientais corroboram a hipótese de um quadro de estabilidade regional (recursos e visão de mundo), com permanência de uso e articulação entre locais em uso contínuo, permitindo a ideia de um território estruturado ao longo dessas ocupações do Holoceno médio.

Abstract The Serra Negra Area, comprising 77 archaeological sites, is located on the northeast slope of the Southern Espinhaço Mountain Range, Brazil. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the paleoenvironmental and archaeological data of this important area in the Indigenous occupation’s context of South America, contributing to the discussion of what has been referred to as the Archaic Gap. The discussion is grounded in the established literature on occupations of the Brazilian Central Plateau during the Holocene, while also highlighting regional specificities. In conclusion, we demonstrate that in this region the so-called Archaic Gap during the Middle Holocene did not occur, as the region remained continuously occupied during this period, with persistent use and articulation of landscapes that were in continuous demand, thereby permitting the idea of a structured territory throughout these occupations, as well as the continuity of social technologies used in the production of material culture. Therefore, the combination of archaeological and paleoenvironmental contexts, chronologies, and archaeological and paleoenvironmental data corroborate the hypothesis of a framework of regional stability (resources and world view), with the continued use and articulation of sites, thereby allowing for the concept of a structured territory throughout the Middle Holocene occupations.

Resumo No final do mês de março de 1645, um grande grupo de indígenas Potiguara, ou brasilianos – como os neerlandeses se referiam aos indígenas aldeados da costa do Brasil e falantes do tupi –, se reuniu em assembleia no aldeamento de Tapesserica, Itamaracá. O objetivo dessa assembleia era múltiplo, incluindo o estabelecimento de câmaras indígenas e o debate sobre a lei de liberdade dos índios. A assembleia deliberativa resultou em um documento, uma representação, que foi entregue pessoalmente pelos Potiguara ao governo neerlandês, no Recife. O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar uma nova tradução da representação dos Potiguara, bem como analisar a reunião que resultou em um dos primeiros registros de assembleia indígena realizada no Brasil. Adicionalmente, serão exploradas as razões para sua organização e contextualizadas as relações indígenas-neerlandesas nas chamadas Guerras do Açúcar (1624-1654).

Abstract In late March 1645, an impressive number of Potiguara, or Brazilians – as the Dutch called the Tupi-speaking natives of coastal Brazil –, gathered in the mission village of Tapesserica on Itamaracá. The assembly served multiple purposes, including the establishment of indigenous chambers (câmaras) and discussions regarding the law of native freedom. The deliberations culminated in a document known as the remonstrance, which the Potiguara personally delivered to the Dutch government in Recife. This article presents a new translation of the Brazilians’ remonstrance and offers an analysis of the Potiguara Assembly, recognized as one of the earliest recorded indigenous assemblies in Brazil. It explores the motivations behind its convening and examines its role in shaping indigenous-Dutch relations during the Sugar Wars (1624-1654).

Resumo Na língua Mebêngôkre (família Jê), em construções com predicados verbais, com um ou dois argumentos, A/S são expressos por prefixos, pronomes nominativos ou nominais, possibilitando quatro padrões de alinhamento de S/A/P. Esses padrões foram identificados pelas seguintes propriedades gramaticais: de codificação (prefixo de pessoa no verbo, prefixo indexado na posposição ergativa e posição dos constituintes na oração) e comportamental (reflexivização, controle do apagamento em orações coordenadas e subordinadas, e na mudança de referência). A partir deste cenário, o objetivo do trabalho é descrever os padrões de alinhamento de S/A/P, os contextos que ocorrem e como são condicionados. Os procedimentos metodológicos incluíram pesquisa de campo, com coleta de dados de consultor indígena, obtidos por meio de gravação. Os dados mostraram que a presença de operadores pós-verbais é a motivação principal para a forma de A/S.

Abstract In the Mebêngôkre language (Jê family), in constructions with verbal predicates, with one or two arguments, A/S are expressed by prefixes, nominative pronouns or nominal forms, allowing for four alignment patterns of S/A/P .These patterns were identified by the following grammatical properties: coding (person prefix in the verb, indexed prefix in ergative postposition and constituents position in the sentence), and behavioral (reflexivization, erasure control in coordinate and subordinate clauses, and switch-reference). In this scenario, the objective of this paper is to describe the alignment patterns of S/A/P, the contexts in which they occur, and how they are conditioned. The methodological procedures included field research, with data collection from an indigenous consultant, obtained through interview recording. The data showed that the presence of post-verbal operators is the main motivation for the form of A/S.

Resumo Entre os anos 1933-1935, o etnólogo alemão Emil Heinrich Snethlage (1897-1939) viajou pelo vale do rio Guaporé, onde encontrou 13 povos indígenas e documentou aspectos das suas culturas e línguas. O seu diário científico de mais de 1.000 páginas foi publicado somente em 2016. O valor histórico e emocional desse material único para os povos indígenas da região é inestimável. A tradução desse documento para a língua portuguesa, complementada por fotografias históricas, um filme sonorizado, gravações sonoras, acompanhada de trechos de manuscritos e de artigos do autor, inéditos no Brasil, foi finalmente publicada em 2021 pelo Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Em 2022, uma expedição multidisciplinar apresentou a obra aos povos visitados pelo próprio Snethlage. Este artigo pretende celebrar e compartilhar a experiência da disponibilização pública, em português, do acervo de Emil Heinrich Snethlage para as comunidades indígenas envolvidas. A primeira parte do texto descreve o contexto histórico-cultural e a segunda metade é um relato da jornada de encontros com os povos originários do vale do Guaporé. O artigo, em si, não tem pretensões científicas; apesar disso, termina com um posfácio que cita as principais fontes científicas disponíveis para os interessados no estudo da história e da diversidade cultural e linguística do sul de Rondônia.

Abstract Between 1933 and 1935, the German ethnologist Emil Heinrich Snethlage (1897-1939) travelled in the Guaporé river valley, visited 13 indigenous peoples and documented aspects of their cultures and languages. His scientific diary of more than 1,000 pages was published in 2016. The historical and emotional value of this material for the region’s indigenous peoples is immeasurable. The translation of this document into Portuguese, complemented by numerous historical photos, an originally silent film set to sound, audio recordings, excerpts from manuscripts, as well as several of Snethlage’s articles that were previously only available in German, was finally published in 2021 by the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. In 2022, a multidisciplinary expedition presented the work to the peoples visited by Snethlage himself. This article aims to register and share the experience of making Emil Heinrich Snethlage’s collection publicly available in Portuguese for the indigenous communities involved. The first part of the text describes the historical and cultural context, while the second part recounts our journey of meetings with the indigenous peoples of the Guaporé Valley. The article itself does not have scientific pretensions; nonetheless, it concludes with an afterword that cites the main scientific sources available for those interested in studying the history, cultural diversity, and linguistic diversity of southern Rondônia.

Abstract This paper deals with the phonological status of sequences of the type ‘glottal stop + consonant’ in three languages classified as Northern Jê (Jê branch, Macro-Jê family), spoken in the states of Maranhão and Tocantins, Brazil: Mẽhĩ, Mẽ hẽeh, and Panhĩ. It analyzes the distributional restrictions on the occurrence of such sequences, followed by the alternations between the presence and the absence of a glottal stop, as well as the idiosyncratic behavior of certain morphemes regarding the occurrence of the glottal stop. A parsimonious analysis is proposed for these phenomena involving the identification of preglottalized consonants as complex segments. Preglottalization occurs on the surface exclusively after short vowels, as well as when preceded by a third-person absolutive prefix, whereas in other environments it is deleted. In the varieties of the Timbira complex, the preglottalized segments share behavioral properties with postoralized nasals, revealing similarities between two types of complex segments.

Resumo O artigo aborda o estatuto fonológico das sequências do tipo ‘oclusiva glotal + consoante’ em três línguas pertencentes ao ramo Jê Setentrional (família Jê, tronco Macro-Jê), faladas no Maranhão e no Tocantins: Mẽhĩ, Mẽ hẽeh e Panhĩ. São analisadas as restrições distribucionais à ocorrência de tais sequências, as alternâncias entre a presença e a ausência da oclusiva glotal, bem como o comportamento idiossincrático de determinados morfemas em relação à ocorrência da oclusiva glotal. Propõe-se uma análise econômica para os fenômenos observados, que envolve a identificação de consoantes preglotalizadas como segmentos de contorno. A preglotalização é realizada na superfície unicamente após vogais curtas, bem como quando precedida por um prefixo de terceira pessoa absolutiva, ao passo que nos demais ambientes a preglotalização é apagada. Nas variedades do complexo Timbira, os segmentos preglotalizados compartilham seu comportamento com os segmentos pós-oralizados, evidenciando um paralelismo entre dois tipos de segmentos de contorno.

Abstract This article compiles published materials, activities conducted, and archaeological sites discovered in the Brazilian state of Roraima, presenting the sites known in the state at this time and their status regarding georeferencing and registration in the Integrated Knowledge and Management System (SICG) database of the Brazilian National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). It also reports on the progress of environmental licensing in the state of Roraima and archaeology in general; the objective is to break the silence which for the past four decades has applied to this Amazonian territory which is simultaneously so rich and yet so poorly studied in terms of archaeology. The chosen methodology was bibliographical research involving internal documents and files from IPHAN’s central office in Roraima, its systems (electronic data system - SEI, SICG, Brazilian National Register of Archaeological Sites - CNSA), and scientific publications. We determined that 81.5% of the sites have some kind of georeferencing and 71.7% are registered in the SICG. As for environmental licensing, actions by IPHAN and interventions by the Federal Public Prosecutor resulted in a record number of Activity Characterization Files in 2022. We can see that there has indeed been some progress in archaeology in the state of Roraima in recent years, despite the slow pace and lack of publicity.

Resumo O presente artigo traz um compilado de materiais publicados, atividades realizadas e sítios arqueológicos descobertos em Roraima. Apresenta os sítios conhecidos no estado até o momento e sua situação em relação ao georreferenciamento e ao cadastro junto à base de dados (Sistema Integrado de Conhecimento e Gestão - SICG) do Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). Também esclarece o andamento do licenciamento ambiental no estado e da arqueologia em geral. O artigo busca romper com a mudez que assola, nos últimos 40 anos, este território amazônico tão rico e, ao mesmo tempo, tão pouco estudado do ponto de vista da arqueologia. A metodologia utilizada foi pesquisa bibliográfica em documentos/arquivos internos da Superintendência do IPHAN em Roraima, em seus sistemas (Sistema Eletrônico de Informações - SEI, SICG e Cadastro Nacional de Sítios Arqueológicos - CNSA) e em publicações científicas. Resulta que 81,5% dos sítios contam com algum tipo de georreferenciamento, e 71,7% estão cadastrados no SICG. No licenciamento ambiental, ações da Superintendência e intervenção do Ministério Público Federal refletiram num recorde de fichas de caracterização de atividades em 2022. É possível perceber que, apesar de pouco divulgado, nos últimos anos houve certo avanço na arqueologia do estado, ainda que esteja caminhando a passos lentos.

Abstract This article analyses the apostolic journey of Giovanni Genocchi to Argentina, Chile, Peru and Brazil, carried out between the years 1911 and 1912. The goal of this journey was to investigate the denunciations of enslavement, extermination and torture of indigenous people that were taking place in the region of Putumayo, in Peru, and in several Latin American countries. Other objectives of the trip were to study the feasibility of creating a religious mission in Putumayo and to propose a plan for reorganizing the missions among the indigenous people as well as the Catholic Church in Latin America. The Holy See intended to promote reforms that would favour institutional expansion and the evangelization of the indigenous people and the whole of society. To this end, I focus on Genocchi’s apostolic narratives in order to problematize the logic of coloniality. Sources were obtained from the Vatican Apostolic Archive and the Archive of Propaganda Fide, among others.

Resumo Este artigo analisa a viagem apostólica de Giovanni Genocchi a Argentina, Chile, Peru e Brasil, realizada entre os anos de 1911 e 1912, para investigar as denúncias de escravizações, extermínios e torturas de indígenas que ocorriam na região de Putumayo, no Peru, e em vários países latino-americanos. Outros objetivos da viagem eram estudar a viabilidade de criar uma missão religiosa em Putumayo e propor um plano de reorganização das missões entre os indígenas, assim como da Igreja Católica na América Latina. A Santa Sé pretendia promover reformas que favorecessem a expansão institucional e a evangelização dos indígenas e de toda a sociedade. Para tal, enfoco as narrativas apostólicas de Genocchi para problematizar a lógica da colonialidade. As fontes foram obtidas no Arquivo Apostólico do Vaticano e no Archivio Storico di Propaganda Fide, entre outros.

Abstract The objective of this article was to present and discuss data on the study of zoomorphic representations in sites with rock art records in the State of São Paulo. Known for its archaeological research on shell mounds and lithic materials, the state of São Paulo has few works on rock paintings and engravings. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in the number of discoveries and research based on sites with rock art records. To identify similarities and graphic differences between zoomorphic, the present research started from the analysis of the technique, theme, and scenography of the rock panels of all 55 sites identified in the state. The results highlight a small number of these representations, in painted and engraved scenarios, with only 22 figures, highlighted in 9 places. They are morphologically identified as deer, birds, reptiles, and crustaceans, characterized by isolated graphic realizations in panels, marked by non-figurative representations. The animals depicted stand out for their lack of dynamism and scarce anatomical detail. The figures have a marked hermetic character.

Resumo Este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar e discutir os dados sobre o estudo das representações de zoomorfos nos sítios com registros rupestres do estado de São Paulo. Conhecido por pesquisas arqueológicas voltadas a sambaquis e a materiais líticos, o estado de São Paulo apresenta poucos trabalhos em temáticas sobre pinturas e gravuras rupestres. Nos últimos anos, porém, vem crescendo o número de descobertas e de estudos baseados em sítios nessa temática. Com o objetivo de identificar similaridades e diferenças gráficas entre as figuras com características zoomórficas, a presente pesquisa partiu da análise da técnica, temática e cenografia dos painéis rupestres dos 55 sítios identificados no estado. Os resultados destacam um pequeno quantitativo dessas representações, em cenários pintados e gravados, com apenas 22 figuras, destacadas em nove sítios. Estão morfologicamente identificadas como cervídeos, aves, répteis e crustáceos, caracterizando-se por realizações gráficas isoladas em painéis, dominantemente marcados por representações não figurativas. Os animais representados destacam-se pelo pouco dinamismo e pelo escasso detalhamento anatômico. As figuras possuem um caráter hermético marcado.

Abstract This work presents an unpublished report in Portuguese authored by Gottfried Hagmann about alligator hunting on Mexiana Island, published while he was a zoologist at the Goeldi Museum. Hagmann accompanied by Joseph Schönmann and Manoel de Pinto Lima Guedes, respectively, the zoology preparator, and the botany preparator of the same institution, conducted an expedition to Mexiana island for three months throughout 1901. The travel memoirs resulting from the expedition, provides us details of the brutal alligator hunting on Mexiana Island, revealing the techniques, culture and knowledge of the local inhabitants. At the same time, this document allows us to understand the author's conceptions and contradictions regarding the conservation of Amazonian fauna.

Resumo Este trabalho apresenta um relato inédito em português de Gottfried Hagmann sobre a caça de jacarés na ilha de Mexiana, publicado quando era auxiliar de zoologia do então Museu Goeldi. Hagmann, acompanhado de Joseph Schönmann e de Manoel de Pinto Lima Guedes, respectivamente, preparador da seção de zoologia e preparador de botânica da mesma instituição, realizou uma expedição pela mencionada ilha durante três meses, ao longo de 1901. A memória de viagem, fruto dessa expedição, oferece-nos detalhes da brutal caçada aos jacarés na ilha de Mexiana, revelando as técnicas, a cultura e o conhecimento dos habitantes locais. Ao mesmo tempo, esse documento permite-nos compreender as concepções e contradições do autor sobre a conservação da fauna amazônica.

Abstract In this article, we investigate the work of Bertha Lutz as a herpetologist. More specifically, we analyze her descriptions of anuran amphibians found in Brazilian territory. The main objective of this work is to discuss the practical dimension of scientific knowledge in Brazilian herpetology in the mid-20th century. We approach this discussion through the study of the diversity of investigation methods, classification and understanding, employed by Lutz in her work with anurans, focusing on her observations regarding the vocalization of these animals. Her descriptions and classifications, in contrast to the existing knowledge in the context of her work, led us to a debate about the nature of her scientific practices. Finally, we aim to reflect upon the ideas of ‘strong objectivity’ and ‘interagency’, which relate to the activities and roles that Bertha Lutz occupied, as a woman, feminist activist and scientist engaged with the lives of other animals.

Resumo Neste artigo, investigamos o trabalho de Bertha Lutz como herpetóloga. Mais especificamente, analisamos suas descrições de anfíbios anuros encontrados em solo brasileiro. O principal objetivo aqui é discutir a dimensão prática do conhecimento científico na herpetologia brasileira de meados do século XX. Abordamos essa discussão a partir do estudo da diversidade de métodos de investigação, classificação e entendimento empregados por Lutz em suas pesquisas com anuros, focando em suas observações acerca da vocalização desses animais. Suas descrições e classificações, em contraste com o conhecimento existente em seu contexto de atuação, nos levam a um debate sobre a natureza de suas práticas científicas. Buscamos, por fim, esboçar uma reflexão sobre as ideias de ‘objetividade forte’ e ‘interagência’, que se relacionam com as atividades e os lugares que Bertha Lutz ocupava, como mulher, militante feminista e cientista envolvida com a vida de outros animais.

Abstract This article addresses historical processes that brought fundamental changes to the indigenous people of the Corumbiara-Apediá region, in the south of the state of Rondônia, focusing on the Aikanã and their neighbours, Salamãi, Kwazá and Kanoé. By examining historical and anthropological documentation alongside Aikanã memory, it highlights the impact of the invasion of traditional occupation territories and the resulting population displacement due to the rubber economy and, later agribusiness. The period covered ranges from the earliest records of the Aikanã and neighbouring peoples, in the begining of the 20th century to the mid-1960s and 1970s, when infrastructure projects and the sale of federal lands began, prompting the Aikanã to settle in what is now their indigenous territory. Through a critical reading of the available sources, the article emphasizes the stories of various individuals mentioned in Aikanã memory, or by travellers and scientists who visited the area. This paper is a contribution to the still incomplete literature on the Corumbiara-Apediá region, which continues to be under immense social and ecological pressure.

Resumo Este artigo aborda processos históricos que trouxeram mudanças fundamentais para os povos da região Corumbiara-Apediá, no sul do estado de Rondônia, com foco nos Aikanã e seus vizinhos, Salamãi, Kwazá e Kanoé. Através da aproximação entre a documentação histórica, antropológica e a memória Aikanã, coloca-se em perspectiva o impacto da invasão dos territórios de ocupação tradicional e consequente deslocamento populacional, em função da economia da borracha e, mais tarde, da expansão agropecuarista. O período abordado vai dos primeiros registros feitos sobre os Aikanã e povos vizinhos, no começo do século XX, até meados dos anos sessenta e setenta, quando se iniciaram os projetos de infraestrutura e venda das terras federais, levando os Aikanã a se estabelecerem na atual terra indígena. Através da leitura crítica das fontes disponíveis, destaca-se a história de vários indivíduos, mencionados na memória Aikanã, ou por viajantes e cientistas. Trata-se de uma contribuição à literatura, ainda lacunar, sobre a região Corumbiara-Apediá, que continua sob imensa pressão social e ecológica.

Abstract Woven and braided objects made from plant fibers, produced by the indigenous peoples of the Rio Negro, provide references for establishing dialogues with the writings and photographs of Eduardo Galvão regarding these materials and materiality. Weaving tucum threads is a female craft and was produced at the Salesian Mission of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, on the upper Rio Negro. The weaves, both the vine basket and the arumã tipiti, represent male knowledge of the indigenous peoples of the communities of Acariquara and Espírito Santo, located on the middle Rio Negro. In this article, we address the production and use of tucum fabrics and vine and arumã weaves, as observed in 1995, 2007 and 2010 in different locations in the northwestern Amazon.

Resumo Objetos tecidos e trançados de fibras vegetais, elaborados por povos indígenas do rio Negro, fornecem referências para o estabelecimento de diálogos com os escritos e as fotografias de Eduardo Galvão a respeito desses materiais e materialidades. Os tecidos de fios de tucum constituem um ofício feminino e eram produzidos na Missão Salesiana de São Gabriel da Cachoeira, no alto rio Negro. Os trançados, tanto o cesto cargueiro de cipó quanto o tipiti de arumã, representam saberes masculinos dos povos indígenas das comunidades de Acariquara e Espírito Santo, situadas no médio rio Negro. Abordo, neste artigo, a confecção e o uso de tecidos de tucum e trançados de cipó e arumã, como observado em 1995, 2007 e 2010, em diferentes localidades do noroeste amazônico.

Abstract This memorial aims to publicize a selection of documents from the Eduardo Galvão Fund, deposited in the Guilherme de La Penha Archive of the Goeldi Museum. These are fragments from a much larger collection on the Rio Negro, produced by the anthropologist during his two ethnographic expeditions to the region in 1951 and 1954. Following a brief contextualization of the anthropologist and his work related to the Rio Negro region, a selection of photographs and excerpts extracted from field diaries are presented. They portray characters and their relationships in the context of the aviamento system, mainly related to rubber exploitation.

Resumo Este memorial visa publicizar uma seleção de documentos do Fundo Eduardo Galvão, depositado no Arquivo Guilherme de La Penha, do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Trata-se de fragmentos de um acervo bem mais amplo sobre o rio Negro, produzido pelo antropólogo em 1951 e 1954, quando realizou duas expedições etnográficas àquela região. Antecedidos de uma breve contextualização sobre o antropólogo e sua obra relacionada à região do rio Negro, são publicados uma seleção de fotografias e trechos extraídos de diários de campo, que retratam personagens e suas relações no contexto do sistema de aviamento, principalmente relacionados à exploração da borracha.

Abstract This text, written by several hands, aims to share the academic reflections of four indigenous students, including current students and graduates of the Postgraduate Program in Anthropology at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), beneficiaries of Affirmative Policies and researchers from the Núcleo de Estudos da Amazônia Indígena (NEAI). The text consists of brief descriptions of the authors’ trajectories, the academic challenges faced and the efforts to escape the ‘matapí’ (trap) and deconstruction (of bodies and thoughts), to reconstruct new bases based on indigenous epistemology. The result of this work is the result of an exercise of reflexivity on indigenous knowledge systems and practices, with the construction of an indigenous anthropology as its horizon. This is the motto that connects the experiences between the authors.

Resumo Este texto, escrito a várias mãos, tem como objetivo compartilhar as reflexividades acadêmicas de quatro estudantes indígenas, incluindo alunos cursistas e egressos do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social (PPGAS), da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM), beneficiários das políticas afirmativas e pesquisadores do Núcleo de Estudo da Amazônia Indígena (NEAI). O texto constitui-se de uma breve descrição das trajetórias dos autores, dos desafios acadêmicos enfrentados e dos esforços de escapar do ‘matapí’ e da desconstrução (dos corpos e dos pensamentos), para reconstruir novas bases a partir da epistemologia indígena. O resultado deste trabalho é fruto de um exercício de reflexividade sobre os sistemas de conhecimentos e práticas indígenas, tendo como horizonte a construção de uma Antropologia indígena. Esse é o mote que conecta as experiências entre os autores.
