ABSTRACT The objective was to estimate the most profitable management regimes and the potential for mitigating greenhouse gases by the growth of trees in silvopastoral systems with eucalyptus established in natural grasslands in areas of family ranchers, in the region of Bagé (RS). Data were collected on growth and forest production in silvopastoral systems located in 15 rural properties, surveying the implementation costs, and the dimensions and value of the forest assortments practiced in the region. The plantations were stratified by genetic material, initial planting spacing and soil type and, after that, the simulation was performed with the aid of SisILPFE.dunnii and SisILPFeucalipto software. The definition of the best management regime was obtained by calculating the Annualized Net Present Value (NPV) and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), using the Planin software. For the most profitable management regime, the calculation of the mitigation of greenhouse gases was carried out following the conditions for obtaining the Carbon Neutral Meat protocol. It was estimated that management regimes with thinning and a rotation age between 14 and 18 years for the best and worst sites, respectively, have greater profitability and potential to mitigate methane emissions from cattle. The stocking rate neutralized by trees has the potential to be higher than the stocking rate commonly used in native pastures in the Pampa, generating a carbon surplus that could be used to remunerate cattle breeders for environmental services.

RESUMO O objetivo foi estimar o regime de manejo mais rentável e o potencial de mitigação de metano entérico pelo crescimento das árvores em sistemas silvipastoris com eucalipto estabelecidos em pastagens nativas em áreas de pecuaristas familiares, na região de Bagé (RS). Foram coletados dados de crescimento e produção florestal em 15 propriedades rurais, levantados os custos de implantação, as dimensões e valor dos sortimentos florestais praticados na região. Os plantios foram agrupados por material genético, espaçamento e tipo de solo e, após, realizada a simulação com auxílio dos softwares SisILPFE.dunnii e SisILPFeucalipto para a obtenção de estimativas de crescimento e produção. A definição do melhor regime de manejo foi obtida pelo cálculo do Valor Presente Líquido Anualizado (VPLA) e da Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR), com uso do software Planin. Para o regime de manejo mais rentável em cada grupo, foi realizado o cálculo da mitigação de gases de efeito estufa seguindo as condicionantes para a obtenção do selo Carne Carbono Neutro. Estimou-se que regimes de manejo com o emprego de desbastes e uma idade de rotação entre 14 e 18 anos para os melhores e piores sítios, respectivamente, apresentam maior rentabilidade e potencial para mitigar as emissões de metano dos bovinos. A taxa de lotação animal neutralizável pelas árvores tem potencial para ser superior à taxa de lotação comumente empregada em pastagens nativas no Pampa, gerando um excedente de carbono que poderia ser utilizado para a remuneração dos produtores por serviços ambientais.

ABSTRACT Background: Brazil Nuts (BN) tree is a species of high importance in Amazon region. Their continuous use by traditional communities is often related to disturbances that lead to larger degraded areas where this species is commonly found (“BN groves”). Here we aimed to explore the ecological patterns of BN groves vegetation and its relationship with BN trees and evaluate their potential as a source of carbon credits. We sampled 15 circular plots, with Brazilian Nut trees as the center (focal trees) and collected morphometric data from the focal trees. Additionally, we evaluated fruit production for a period of 5 years to obtain annual measurements, which were used as a proxy of the anthropic impact associated with the collection process. Through analysis of the data, we: i) examined the effects of BN trees on the adjacent vegetation; ii) quantified the potential amount of carbon credits in the adjacent vegetation and in the focal trees by converting carbon stock to equivalent CO2. Results: The adjacent vegetation structure was influenced by the size of BN trees (focal trees). No important effects of BN trees on the adjacent vegetation floristic composition and functional attributes were found. Additionally, we found that Brazilian Nut groves possess a significant potential for carbon credits that could be leveraged in the future carbon credit market, Conclusion: The study highlights the potential for carbon credit generation in Brazil nut groves in the Southeast Amazon as a means of supporting conservation and restoration efforts in these environments.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o incremento corrente mensal em diâmetro de árvores de eucalipto (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla) em resposta a diferentes sistemas de produção, fatores climáticos e desbaste. As árvores foram avaliadas em quatro sistemas de produção: monocultivo e integração lavoura-floresta, pecuária-floresta e lavoura-pecuária-floresta. O incremento em diâmetro de 80 árvores foi avaliado mensalmente de maio de 2015 a maio de 2019. O efeito das variáveis climáticas foi determinado pelas análises de correlação e regressão múltipla. O incremento corrente mensal em diâmetro é sazonal e altamente dependente da precipitação. A modelagem adotada permitiu concluir que tanto a falta quanto o excesso de água (30 e 475 mm por mês, respectivamente) reduziram o crescimento das árvores em diâmetro. As árvores nos sistemas de integração crescem mais do que as em monocultivo, e o consórcio com a lavoura resultou em maior crescimento em diâmetro do que o com a pastagem. O desbaste promove a aceleração no crescimento das árvores remanescentes, com efeito de maior magnitude e duração nos sistemas integrados de produção.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the current monthly increment in diameter of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla) trees in response to different production systems, climatic factors, and thinning. The trees were evaluated in four production systems: monoculture and crop-forestry, livestock-forestry, and crop-livestock-forestry integration. The increment in diameter of 80 trees was measured monthly from May 2015 to May 2019. The effect of the climatic variables was determined through correlation and multiple regression analyses. The increment in current monthly diameter is seasonal and highly dependent on accumulated rainfall. The adopted modeling allowed concluding that both water shortage and excess (30 and 475 mm per month, respectively) decreased tree growth in diameter. The trees in the integrated systems showed a higher growth in diameter than those under monoculture, and intercropping with crops resulted in a greater diameter growth than that with pasture. Thinning accelerates the growth of the remaining trees, with an effect of higher magnitude and longer duration in the integrated production systems.

Resumo O trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de comparar a estrutura diamétrica e os indicadores de regeneração natural em castanhais nativos e correlacioná-los à fase de desenvolvimento da floresta, à intensidade de coleta de sementes e à exploração madeireira. Os dados foram coletados em 54 hectares nos municípios de Caracaraí - RR e Itaúba - MT. As distribuições de frequência diamétricas foram comparadas por medidas de tendência central, variabilidade, forma e aderência por Kolmogorov-Smirnov. A regeneração natural foi correlacionada às variáveis ecológicas, intensidade de coleta e à atividade da fauna pelo Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman e as medias comparadas por Kruskal-Wallis. Os castanhais apresentaram estruturas diamétricas diferenciadas, o que pode ser atribuído a diferenças no percentual de indivíduos jovens nas menores classes diamétricas. A maior densidade de regenerantes nas clareiras e a inexistência de correlação significativa entre a taxa de coleta e os indicadores de regeneração natural indicaram que a abertura do dossel provocada pela exploração florestal madeireira pode ter sido o fator de maior impacto no estabelecimento da regeneração natural e no rejuvenescimento dos castanhais.

Abstract This work was developed with the objective of comparing the diameter structure and natural regeneration indicators of Brazil nut groves and correlates them to the forest successional stage, seed collection intensity and logging. Data were collected from 54 hectares in Caracaraí (Roraima state) and Itaúba (Mato Grosso state). Frequency distributions were compared by measures of central tendency, variability, form and adherence by Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test. Natural regeneration was correlated with environmental variables, seed collection intensity and fauna activity by Spearman correlation coefficient and Kruskal-Wallis. The Brazil nut groves presented different diametric structures, which can be attributed to differences in young individuals in the smaller diametric classes. The higher density of juveniles in canopy gaps and the lack of a significant correlation between seed collection intensity and natural regeneration indicate that canopy openings from logging could have been the major impact factor in the natural regeneration establishment and in Brazil nut grove rejuvenation.

Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de comparar a alocação da biomassa arbórea, a conicidade do tronco e a relação altura e diâmetro ao longo do fuste de árvores de eucalipto implantadas em um sistema silvipastoril, em diferente exposição solar, e em monocultivo. Os dados foram coletados em 13 árvores-amostra aos 27 meses de idade, selecionadas em função do intervalo de confiança da média dos diâmetros a altura do peito (DAP) e da posição das árvores na faixa de plantio, com face de exposição sul, norte e central. Concluiu-se que na comparação com o monocultivo, as árvores plantadas em sistema silvipastoril apresentaram menor altura total, maior conicidade e maior biomassa na copa. No sistema silvipastoril, não houve efeito da posição da árvore na faixa de plantio sobre a produção total de biomassa na parte aérea, porém, árvores com face de exposição norte foram mais baixas, cônicas e produziram maior biomassa de galhos e folhas nas partes inferiores da copa.

Abstract This work was developed in order to compare the arboreal biomass allocation, trunk taper, height and diameter ratio, along the stem of eucalyptus trees planted in silvopastoral system in different sun exposure and monoculture. The data were collected from 13 trees at 27 months, selected according to confidence interval average of breast height diameter (DAP) trees position in planting strip, sun exposure (face south, north and central). It was found that compared to the monoculture, the trees planted in silvopastoral system had lower overall height, larger taper and higher biomass in pantry. There was no sun exposure effect for planting strip and total biomass for silvipastoral systems, however, trees with north sun exposure were lower, more conical, produced more branches and leaves in the lower parts of the treetops.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar métodos indicadores que ajudem a estabelecer a idade do primeiro desbaste para as árvores em sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta, com base nas relações entre o crescimento do eucalipto e a produção de soja e milho. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e três sistemas de produção (lavoura em monocultivo, plantio florestal em monocultivo e integração lavoura-floresta). Para a determinação da idade do desbaste nos sistemas de integração, foram avaliados os métodos dos ingressos percentuais e de Veiga, bem como a taxa de crescimento meta. O método dos ingressos percentuais, a idade do máximo incremento anual em volume ou a idade da árvore quando ocorre a estagnação do incremento diamétrico não se mostram adequados como referência para desbastes, quando a produtividade agrícola não é monitorada de forma conjunta. Os métodos fundamentados no controle da área basal e do incremento diamétrico meta são viáveis para definir a idade técnica de realização e controle dos desbastes.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine indicator methods that help to establish the first thinning age of trees to be used in crop-livestock-forest integration systems based on the relationships between eucalyptus growth and soybean and corn production. The experiment followed a completely randomized block design, with four replicates and three production systems (crop monoculture, forest planting monoculture, and crop-forest integration). The percentage of entries and Veiga’s methods, as well as the target growth rates, were assessed to set the thinning age to be adopted for integration systems. The percentage of entries method, the age of the maximum mean annual volume increase, or tree age when diameter growth stagnation occurs did not prove adequate as a reference for thinning, when yields of agricultural crops are not jointly monitored. Methods focusing on controlling the basal area and target diameter increase are feasible to define the technical age for thinning implementation and control.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper was to compare methods and sampling procedures applied to eucalyptus grown under different spatial arrangements in an integrated crop-livestock-forest system (ICLF). The study was carried out in Sinop county, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Arrangements combining fixed and variable area methods to simple random and systematic sampling were tested. Precision, accuracy, efficiency, and diameter-distribution measurements were used for selection of the best sampling arrangement. The sampling intensity, sample unit optimal size and the relative efficiency have been changed depending on the spatial arrangement for 10% sampling error and 95% probability level. The fixed area method based on systematic sampling, as well as smaller sample units with eight to nine plants (48 m2 to 54 m2) were the most accurate; however, larger plots (192 m2 to 216 m2) were more efficient. All sample units size provided good estimates on the number of trees by diameter classes.

ABSTRACT Bertholletia excelsa (Brazil nut) is the only representative of the Bertholletia genus, but presents great phenotypic variability. The objective of this study was to characterize the fruits, seeds and crude oil of Brazil nuts from the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Fruit and seeds from adult trees were collected at the municipalities of Alta Floresta, Cotriguaçu, Itaúba and Juína. Physical characteristics, yield and composition of the seeds, as well as crude oil characteristics were evaluated. The fruits produced in Itaúba were the smallest and had the lowest number of seeds, while those from Juína presented larger size and mass. The nuts produced in Itaúba had the lowest mean unit mass and ten-seed mass values. The seeds produced in Juína presented higher lipid content and lower ash content. The selenium content of the nuts was higher in Cotriguaçu. There were no significant differences in fruit peel thickness, yield and protein content of the nuts or characteristics of the crude oil.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do espaçamento de plantio sobre o crescimento, a alocação de biomassa e a qualidade da madeira para geração de energia de Acacia magium. O experimento foi instalado em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e cinco tratamentos que consistiram de árvores plantadas nos espaçamentos de: 2,0x2,0, 2,5x2,5, 3,0x2,0, 3,0x2,5 e 3,0x3,0 m. Aos 67 meses de plantio, avaliaram-se os seguintes parâmetros da espécie: desempenho (mortalidade, crescimento em diâmetro, altura, fator de casca, e produção volumétrica de casca e de biomassa) e qualidade energética da madeira (densidade básica, poder calorífico superior, cinzas, carbono fixo e materiais voláteis), por meio de análise de variância. O espaçamento de plantio não teve influência sobre a produção em volume e de biomassa por hectare, nem sobre a qualidade da madeira para a produção de energia. O maior espaçamento de plantio (3,0x3,0 m) fornece maior crescimento individual, e o menor espaçamento (2,0x2,0 m) produz árvores de menores dimensões, porém com maior percentagem de biomassa concentrada no tronco, e pode apresentar maior eficiência energética com a adoção de uma idade de rotação entre 40 a 50 meses.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the effect of spacing on the growth, biomass allocation, and wood quality for energy purposes of Acacia magium. A randomized complete block design was carried out with three replicates and five treatments consisting of trees planted at different spacings: 2.0x2.0, 2.5x2.5, 3.0x2.0, 3.0x2.5, and 3.0x3.0 m. At 67 months after planting, the following species parameters were evaluated: performance (mortality, diameter growth, height, bark factor, and bark and biomass volume yield) and wood energy quality (basic density, higher-calorific value, ash, fixed carbon, and volatile materials) through the analysis of variance. Plant spacing did not affect volume and biomass production per hectare nor wood quality for energy purposes. The widest spacing (3.0x3.0 m) provides better individual growth, and the narrowest one (2.0x2.0 m) produces smaller trees, but with the highest percentage of dry biomass in the trunk, and can show the best energy potential at a rotation age from 40 to 50 months.

RESUMO Neste estudo foram analisados os atributos do solo relacionados com variações na produção de frutos da castanheira bem como o estado nutricional da espécie. As árvores foram selecionadas em parcela permanente (Caracaraí, RR) e divididas em quatro classes de produção: alta, média, baixa e muito baixa. Em novembro de 2009, amostras de solo e folhas foram coletadas para se avaliar a fertilidade do solo, o número de esporos de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares e o estado nutricional das árvores. Árvores com maior produção de frutos ocorreram associadas a maior teor de Al trocável na camada de 0-20 cm do solo, bem como a menor valor de pH e saturação por bases. A variável discriminante resultante deste estudo não foi considerada como responsável por interferir no potencial produtivo da castanheira-do-brasil, mas serviu como indicativo de que árvores mais produtivas contribuem na remoção de bases trocáveis, favorecendo a acidificação do solo.

ABSTRACT In this study we analyzed the soil attributes related with variation in the fruit production of Brazil nut trees, as well as the nutritional status of the species. Trees were selected in permanent plot (Caracaraí - RR) and divided in four production classes: High, Medium, Low and Very low. In November 2009, soil and leaves samples were taken to evaluate soil fertility, soil colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and trees nutritional status. Trees with higher fruits production occurred associated with higher exchangeable Al in soil depth of 0-20 cm, as well as to smaller pH and bases saturation values. The discriminant variable resulting of the present study was not assumed as responsible for interfering with the productive potential of Brazil nut trees; however, it indicates most productive trees contributing with exchangeable basis removal, favoring soil acidification.

RESUMO Os objetivos deste estudo foram estimar coeficientes de repetibilidade de dois caracteres de produção em duas populações nativas de castanheira-do-brasil, determinar o número de anos de avaliações adequado para um eficiente processo de seleção, determinar a correlação fenotípica permanente entre os caracteres de produção e selecionar árvores promissoras nessas populações. As populações, localizadas na região do Itã (ITA) e na região do Cujubim (CUJ), ambas pertencentes ao Município de Caracaraí, Estado de Roraima - Brasil, foram constituídas por 85 e 51 árvores adultas, respectivamente. Cada árvore foi avaliada quanto ao número de frutos por planta (NFP) e peso fresco de sementes por planta (SWP), por oito (ITA) e cinco anos consecutivos (CUJ). As análises estatísticas foram realizadas segundo a metodologia de modelos mistos, utilizando-se o Software Selegen-REML/BLUP (RESENDE, 2007). Os coeficientes de repetibilidade foram baixos tanto para o NFP (0,3145 e 0,3269 para ITA e CUJ, respectivamente) quanto para o SWP (0,2957 e 0,3436 para ITA e CUJ, respectivamente). Em média, são necessários nove anos de avaliação para que sejam alcançados coeficientes de determinação superiores a 80%. Valores de correlação ter sido possível identificar árvores com elevado número de frutos e peso de sementes, número maior de anos de avaliação é necessário para que o processo seletivo seja realizado de forma mais eficiente.

ABSTRACT This study estimates the repeatability coefficients of two production traits in two native populations of Brazil nut trees. It determines the number of years of suitable evaluations for an efficient selection process, determines the permanent phenotypic correlation between production traits and also the selection of promising trees in these populations. Populations, located in the Itã region (ITA) and in the in the Cujubim region (CUJ), are both belonging to the municipality of Caracaraí, state of Roraima - Brazil, and consist of 85 and 51 adult trees, respectively. Each tree was evaluated regarding the number of fruits per plant (NFP) and fresh seed weight per plant (SWP), for eight (ITA) and five consecutive years (CUJ). Statistical analyses were performed according to the mixed model methodology, using Software Selegen-REML/BLUP (RESENDE, 2007). The repeatability coefficients were low for NFP (0.3145 and 0.3269 for ITA and CUJ, respectively) and also for SWP (0.2957 and 0.3436 for ITA and CUJ, respectively). It on average takes nine evaluation years to reach coefficients of determination higher than 80%. Permanent phenotypic correlation values higher than 0.95 were obtained for NFP and SWP in both populations. Although trees with a high number of fruits and seed weight were identified, more evaluation years are needed to perform the selection process more efficiently.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de estudar as variações anuais na produção de frutos e sementes entre populações e indivíduos em castanhais nativos de Roraima. Os dados foram obtidos em cinco parcelas permanentes de 300 m x 300 m instaladas nos Municípios de Caracaraí e São João da Baliza. Nas parcelas permanentes, todas as castanheiras com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) superior ou igual a 10 cm foram identificadas, medidas e numeradas através de placas de alumínio presas aos fustes por pregos. Durante o período de queda dos frutos (março a julho), as árvores foram visitadas em duas ocasiões no meio e no final desse período, e os frutos contados, abertos e pesados com balança de gancho digital com precisão de 50 g. A produção de frutos e sementes varia entre populações e indivíduos e a maioria não produz frutos todos os anos. No ano de maior produção, um castanhal chega a produzir 52 vezes mais do que em anos de baixa. Nos locais estudados, a produção total concentra-se em um pequeno número de indivíduos com um ano de pico de produção (mast-year).

The objective of the present study was to evaluate annual production variations between populations and individuals in native Brazilian nut groves of Roraima. Data were obtained from five permanent plots of 300 m x 300 m installed in the municipalities of Caracaraí and São João da Baliza. Every tree presenting the diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than or equal to 10 cm were measured and identified using aluminum number labels attached to the stem by nails. During the falling of fruits (March-July) all the trees were visited on two occasions: in the middle and at the end of this period. The fruits of each tree were counted, and seeds were weighed using a digital balance scale accurate to 50 g. The fruit and seed production varied among populations and individuals, and the majority did not produce fruits every year. In a high production year, the yield is up to fifty-two times greater than in the low production years. The total production was concentrated on a small number of trees with one year of peak production (mast-year).

O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a composição florística e fitossociológica de uma floresta nativa no município de Caracaraí, Roraima, Brasil. Foram inventariadas todas as árvores com DAP > 10 cm em 9 parcelas permanentes de 100 x 100 m (1 ha cada). Foram observados 4.724 indivíduos (525ind.ha-1), distribuídos em 42 famílias botânicas, 111 gêneros e 165 espécies. As famílias com maior número de indivíduos foram Fabaceae (1.883), Lecythidaceae (609) e Sapotaceae (434), perfazendo 52% do total de indivíduos amostrados. O grupo composto por espécies pioneiras apresentou maior número de indivíduos (219ind.ha-1), seguido das secundárias (193ind.ha-1) e climácicas (113ind.ha-1). No entanto, as secundárias obtiveram maior número de espécies (95), em detrimento de climácicas (44) e pioneiras (26). O índice de diversidade de Shannon (H' = 3,27) e o valor de equabilidade de Pielou (J = 0,64) foram inferiores aos obtidos em outros inventários florísticos na Amazônia Legal, contribuindo para isso o tamanho populacional de Pentaclethra macroloba. As espécies Pentaclethra macroloba (52,1), Eschweilera bracteosa (23,7) e Pouteria caimito (8,1) apresentaram os maiores valores de importância, perfazendo 28% do VI total. A maior parte dos indivíduos amostrados (71,3% = 374ind.ha-1) foram registrados no estrato médio (12,4 m < altura < 26,5 m) da floresta. A comunidade florestal pode ser considerada bem estruturada, madura e diversa, portanto em bom estado de conservação.

This study was carried out to characterize species composition and phytosociology of a native forest located at Caracaraí, Roraima, Brazil. All trees with breast diameter (DBH) above 10 cm in nine 1-ha-permanent plots (100 x 100 m each) were inventoried. We observed 4,724 individuals (525 trees per hectare) distributed in 42 families, 111 genera and 165 species. The families with greater number of individuals were Fabaceae (1883), Lecythidaceae (609) and Sapotaceae (434), comprising 52% of the total. The higher densities of individuals were observed in the pioneer (219 trees ha-1), followed by secondary (193 trees ha-1) and climax species (113 trees ha-1). However, species of secondary group had the highest species richness (95), followed by the climax (44) and the pioneer (26). The Shannon diversity index (H' = 3.27) and the value of Pielou equability (J = 0.64) were lower than those obtained in other floristic inventories in the Amazon, because of the high occurrence of Pentaclethra macroloba. The importance values (VI) were higher for Pentaclethra macroloba (52.1), Eschweilera bracteosa (23.7) and Pouteria caimito (8.1). The importance values of these three species alone accounted for 28% of the total VI across species. Most of the individuals (71.3% = 374 trees ha-1) were recorded in the middle stratum (12.4 m ≤ height < 26.5 m) of forest. The forest community can be considered well-structured, mature and diverse, and so it is in good state of conservation.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho necessário da amostra para estimar a produção individual e populacional de árvores de castanheira‑do‑brasil (Bertholletia excelsa) em floresta nativa, bem como avaliar diferentes sistemas de amostragem. Os dados foram obtidos em um castanhal na região do Itã, em Caracaraí, RR. A produção de frutos e sementes de 239 árvores foi monitorada de 2007 a 2010. Com base na relação das características das árvores (diâmetro, tipo morfológico e variáveis de copa) com a produção, o tipo de alocação e a periodicidade da amostra, foram testados sete procedimentos de amostragem. Para verificar a precisão e a acurácia, foram tomadas 128 amostras da população e calculados o erro‑padrão da média, o intervalo de confiança e o erro absoluto. Para estimar a produção de uma árvore a 1% de probabilidade, é necessário amostrar, em média, 97% dos frutos. Para o limite de erro de 10%, é necessário amostrar 33% dos frutos. A amostragem contínua, estratificada pelo diâmetro à altura do peito em seis estratos, e a alocação proporcional ao número de árvores na classe diamétrica são os procedimentos de amostragem mais indicados.

The objective of this work was to determine the necessary sample size in order to estimate individual and populational production of Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa) in a native forest, and to evaluate different sampling systems. Data were obtained from a grove in the Itã region, Caracaraí county, RR, Brazil. Fruit and seed production from 239 trees was monitored from 2007 to 2010. Seven sampling procedures were tested based on the relationship of tree characteristics (diameter, morphological type, and canopy traits) with production, allocation type, and sample periodicity. To verify the precision and accuracy, 128 samples were taken from population, then it was calculated the standard error of mean, confidence interval, and the absolute error. To estimate tree production at 1% of probability, it is necessary to sample 97% of fruit, on average. For a 10% error limit, it is necessary to sample 33% of fruit. Continuous sampling, stratified by the diameter at breast height in six strata, and proportional allocation to the number of trees in the diameter class are the most suitable sampling procedures.

RESUMO O presente estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de estudar o padrão fenológico da espécie arbórea Carapa guianensis, Aubl., em floresta natural localizada no sul do estado de Roraima, procurando relacionar a frequência de ocorrência das fenofases às condições pluviométricas do período. Para o levantamento fenológico foram selecionados 20 indivíduos adultos localizados em uma parcela permanente de 9 ha. As observações fenológicas ocorreram quinzenalmente de fevereiro de 2006 a fevereiro de 2009, registrando-se a presença ou ausência dos eventos de floração, frutificação e mudança foliar para cada árvore. Para analisar a influência da precipitação na fenologia da espécie foi utilizado o coeficiente de correlação de Spearman e, para estimar a sincronia dos eventos fenológico utilizou-se o índice de sincronia da população (Z). A floração da andiroba mostrou-se subanual, sincrônica e correlacionada negativamente com precipitação no período do evento fenológico. Foram observados dois ciclos de floração, sendo um longo com inicio em outubro, estendendo-se para o ano seguinte, por um período médio de 9 meses, e um curto com duração de dois meses (julho a agosto). A frutificação é anual, longa e sincrônica, e correlacionou-se positivamente com a precipitação. A época ideal para a coleta dos frutos maduros no local estudado é durante o período chuvoso, que compreende abril a julho. A emissão de folhas ocorreu de forma contínua e não se correlacionou com a precipitação. Observou-se uma maior proporção de indivíduos perdendo folhas, entre os meses de agosto a novembro, que caracterizam um período de transição entre a época seca e chuvosa, com sensível redução de precipitação.

ABSTRACT This work was carried out in order to study the phenological pattern of Andiroba in natural forest located in the south of Roraima state, seeking to relate the frequency of phenol-phases occurrence with the rain rate in this period. For the phenological survey 20 adult trees were selected in a permanent sample plot of 9ha. The visits to phenological observations occurred fortnightly from February 2006 to December 2008, recording the presence or absence of flowering, fruiting and leaf change events for each tree. The Spearman correlation was used for analyzing the influence of rainfall on phenology and, the index of synchrony of population (Z) was used for estimating the synchrony of phenological events. The flowering of Andiroba showed to be sub-annual, synchronous and was negatively correlated with the rainfall during the phenological event. Two cycles of flowering were observed: a long one from October until next year, which lasts about nine months, and a short one lasting two months, from July to August. The fruiting is annual, long and synchronous and it was positively correlated with rainfall. The ideal time for collecting ripe fruits at the study site is during the rainy time, that is, from April to July. The leaf flushing was continuous and did not correlate with the rainfall. It was noticed a higher proportion of trees falling leaves between August and November, which characterizes a period of transition between the dry and the rainy period with sensitive reduction of rainfalls.
