Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

We present an electroanalytical method using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry on electrochemically-treated screen-printed gold electrodes to the simultaneous determination of lead(II), copper(II) and mercury(II) in struvite (natural fertilizer produced from urine). Electrochemical treatment via cyclic voltammetry of the working electrodes increased surface rugosity that improved the electroanalytical responses for the three metals. Under optimized conditions and using a deposition time of 90 s, the proposed method presented the following limit of detection values: 1.3 µg L-1 for lead(II), 2.0 µg L-1 for copper(II) and 0.9 µg L-1 for mercury(II). Struvite samples were easily dissolved in supporting electrolyte solution (0.05 mol L-1 HCl). Satisfactory recovery values between 91 and 111% were obtained for the analysis of spiked samples. Hence, we can infer that the proposed electroanalytical method is an effective alternative for the determination of trace metals, since it provides precise and accurate direct analyses, with rapid responses without interference from sample matrix and enabling in field analysis.

This work presents the development and characterization of a new chemically modified electrode exploiting recordable Au-rewritable compact discs (AuCDs) as substrate for drop casting of a chemically-reduced graphene-oxide slurry focusing on simple and low-cost electrochemical sensors. Increase in electrochemical responses in cyclic voltammetric and amperometric measurements were achieved using the proposed sensor. Both scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy data showed increase in rugosity (about 46% higher) for the chemically reduced graphene oxide (CRGO) AuCD surface while Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of structural defects of graphene. The calculated charge transfer resistances (Rct) and heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k0) were 1638 Ω and 0.0022 cm s-1 for the bare substrate, and 91 Ω and 0.0027 cm s-1 for the modified electrode, evidencing the facilitated electron transfer of the CRGO-AuCD surface. The dopamine (DP) amperometric detection using CRGO-AuCD provided low detection limit (0.12 µg L-1) compared with other modified electrodes already reported, high precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 5%) and analytical frequency (370 h-1). As a proof-of-concept, DP determination in synthetic saliva samples was performed and a satisfactory recovery value (98.6 ± 0.9%) was obtained.

This work presents a simple electrochemical method for 2-naphthylamine (2NAP) determination in perfume by differential-pulse voltammetry (DPV) employing a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode cathodically treated. Simple dilution of sample in supporting electrolyte was performed before electrochemical analysis. A borate buffer solution of pH 10.0 containing 20% (v/ (LOD) of 0.0046 µmol L-1 with a linear range between 0.5 and 90 µmol L-1, and RSD < 2.9%, respectively. Recovery values for spiked samples with 2NAP were between 102 and 104%. The proposed method is feasible to be applied for 2NAP detection and quantification on perfume samples with simple sample preparation.

Abstract P. grandiflora is a known ornamental plant with abundant flowering. The flowers exhibit varied coloration with distinct forms and simple folded petals and/or multiple. The objective of this work was to induce regeneration via organogenesis and in vitro flowering of P. grandiflora. Nodal segments of seedlings germinated in vitro were used as explant source for regeneration. Kinetin (KIN) and 6-Benzylaminopurine (BA) were used for the induction of organogenesis. The treatments supplemented with 1.0 and 1.5 mg L−1 BA induced the highest number of adventitious shoots with an average number of 7.0 (±1.55) e 5.4 (±0.83), respectively. The microcuttings obtained from regenerated shoots produced floral buds. The floral buds were located in the axillary and terminal regions of the microcuttings and developed in approximately 10 days of cultivation until the anthesis. The highest number of flower buds was observed in the presence of 0.75 mg L−1 of gibberellic acid. This study opens new perspectives for the establishment of biotechnological tools to be applied for this important ornamental species.

ABSTRACT Sesamum indicum L. has the potential to be cultivated as a forage plant in hot and dry climate regions, and it can be used to increase the food security of a herd. The objective of this study was to evaluate growth, production, and chemical composition of S. indicum compared with conventional forages used for silage production. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with split-plots related to time and four replicates per treatment. The plots consisted of four treatments (Zea mays L., Helianthus annuus L., Pennisetum glaucum [L.] R. Br., and S. indicum), and the subplots were two evaluation periods (2014 and 2016 harvests). Dry forage biomass production differed among the species in the 2014 harvest with values of 25 530, 12 190, 9408, and 9250 kg ha-1 for Z. mays, S. indicum, H. annuus, and P. glaucum, respectively. Maize had a greater variation in forage production between the 2 yr, followed by S. indicum. There were higher dry matter (DM) contents (P < 0.0001) for Z. mays and S. indicum (404.5 and 251.7 g kg-1, respectively). Regarding crude protein, H. annuus and S. indicum had levels of 167.2 and 117.7 g kg-1, respectively. According to the results, it can be inferred that sesame, like millet, provides greater feeding security for ruminant herds in regions with irregular rainfall.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
