A catalyst comprised of SnO2 impregnated on ZnO nanowires, which presented remarkable ability to catalyze fatty acid esterification/transesterification reactions, is reported. For optimization of reaction conditions, artificially acidified soybean oil with 10 wt.% oleic acid was used as a model feed. The optimized conditions were: 150 °C, 6 h, 5 g of oil, catalyst concentration of 5%, and methanol:oil molar ratio of 15:1. The catalyst achieved 92% of total fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) content and was used five times without the necessity of catalyst washing from one reaction to the other. Then, such conditions were applied to produce biodiesel from the oil extracted from Scenedesmus sp. microalgae; the system reached 72% of FAME content, without any previous refining or degumming process of the oil. Rietveld refinement, X-ray diffraction, elemental mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and pyridine-desorption Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the material.

Over the years, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been reported in the literature as an alternative to traditional methods of analysis, becoming well established among spectroanalytical techniques. LIBS is a technique widely used for qualitative approaches; however, it is necessary considerable effort for use in quantitative analysis, mainly due to severe matrix effects. These limitations make it difficult to broaden the application of LIBS in quantitative analysis. In this sense, this review discusses recent advances in calibration strategies applied in LIBS for minimizing matrix effects and enabling determination with satisfactory accuracy and precision. Applications, advantages, and limitations of the calibration strategies, such as matrix-matching calibration (MMC), internal standardization (IS), standard addition (SA), multi-energy calibration (MEC), one-point gravimetric standard addition (OP GSA), one-point and multi-line calibration (OP MLC), slope ratio calibration (SRC), two-point calibration transfer (TP CT), single-sample calibration (SSC), multiple linear regression (MLR), principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS) and artificial neural networks (ANN) are discussed.

AuPd nanoparticles have gained substantial attention due to their application in selective oxidation of alcohols. However, due to the radical nature of the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, under specific conditions, even without a catalyst, the reaction occurs and affects the selectivity of the system. Therefore, we aimed to develop a catalyst that enables the control of the oxidation leading to higher reaction selectivity. To accomplish this, we have prepared a catalytic support comprised of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles impregnated with Sr(OH)2 that presented a significant control of the reaction selectivity without any metal or external base addition. After the impregnation of AuPd nanoparticles in a specific ratio, the reaction reached a selectivity of > 99% for benzaldehyde, in 3.5 h, with a recycle regime of five runs without loss of activity and selectivity. Our results show that the judicious choice of the ratio of the metals prevents the necessity of manipulating the reaction conditions to improve the performance of the system. Additionally, studies under N2 and O2 environments, with or without water, confirmed the role of the O2 in the system. Holding all this information, we propose a possible mechanism for the prepared system.

We have prepared, by a sol-immobilization method, bimetallic catalysts with different Au:Pt atomic ratios supported on commercial SrCO3. The catalytic performance for the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol of such materials was compared to the monometallic counterparts, aiming at the obtaining of the best composition of the material. It was found that the Au:Pt atomic ratio presents a remarkable effect on the system performance, i.e., Pt-rich systems are more selective; however, less active. Thus, an equilibrium related to the activity and selectivity of the system was obtained by considering the yield of the system. Also, some density functional theory (DFT) insights were obtained by using a cluster of 14 atoms of Au and 1 or 2 atoms of Pt. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental mapping in scanning transmission electron microscopy before and after catalyst usage, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, Rietveld refinement, among other techniques, were used and associated to the experimental data, which allowed us to propose a catalytic mechanism for the system, which was important since SrCO3 has not been considered before as catalyst support for alcohol oxidation reactions.

Distribution of Siluriformes in a river under the influence of a small hydroelectric power plant of the Paraná River Basin, Brazil

ABSTRACT When a river is dammed, impacts differ according to distance from the dam under consideration, and sites closer to the dam are more affected than distant ones. Damming a river changes the flow and landscape characteristics, which, in turn, change the hydrological, limnological and ecological dynamics, such as biological production, species distribution, and ecosystem structuring, functioning and services. This study evaluates the distribution pattern of the Siluriformes (catfish) fish species near a small hydroelectric power plant in the Jaguariaíva River, considering three distinct distances from the dam: upstream region, reservoir and downstream region. Samples were taken with gillnets between March 2013 and December 2014. The abundance and richness of the Siluriformes species were evaluated. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to access possible differences in species composition among sites. Finally, a permutational analysis of multivariate dispersion was used to assess possible differences among sampling sites and to examine composition similarities among sites. A total of 840 Siluriformes individuals were captured, distributed among ten species and four families. The highest richness was observed in the downstream region, while the lowest richness was observed in the reservoir area. Differences in the abundance of species were observed between the three distinct regions; the downstream region presented the highest species abundance (CPUE), whereas the lowest abundance was observed in the dam region. Hypostomus paulinus and Hypostomus strigaticeps were abundant species, but exclusively sampled in the downstream region, while Corydoras ehrhardti and Cambeva diabola presented their highest abundance in the upstream region. The distinct longitudinal distribution of Siluriformes observed in this study can be interpreted as indicative of the negative effects of damming. Our study suggests that building small dams may result in negative impacts on the fish assemblage, impacts comparable to those of large reservoirs in terms of spatial changes. It is fundamentally necessary to better evaluate the environmental impacts of small dams in the Neotropical region, especially because few is known about them and how such impacts are comparable to impacts of larger reservoirs.
RESUMO Quando uma barragem é construída, seus impactos diferem de acordo com a distância relativa da barragem, sendo que os locais mais próximos da barragem são mais afetados que os mais distantes. O barramento de um rio resulta em modificações no fluxo do rio e características da paisagem, modificando sua dinâmica hidrológica, limnológica e ecológica, como produção biológica, distribuição de espécies e estruturação do ecossistema e suas funções. O padrão de distribuição de Siluriformes (bagres) no rio Jaguariaíva foi avaliado, considerando três distâncias da barragem: montante, reservatório e jusante. As amostragens foram realizadas em três regiões distintas do rio Jaguariaíva considerando a distância em relação à barragem, entre março de 2013 e dezembro de 2014, com redes de espera, e as distintas zonas originadas pelo represamento do rio. A abundância e riqueza de espécies foram avaliadas. Um total de 840 indivíduos de Siluriformes foi capturado, distribuídos em dez espécies e quatro famílias. A maior riqueza foi observada na região a jusante do reservatório, enquanto a menor foi verificada na região da barragem. Diferenças significativas na abundância das espécies entre as três regiões foram observadas; a região a jusante do reservatório apresentou a maior abundância (CPUE), enquanto a menor abundância foi observada na região do reservatório. Hypostomus paulinus e Hypostomus strigaticeps foram abundantes e exclusivamente amostrados na região a jusante do reservatório, enquanto Corydoras ehrhardti e Cambeva diabola apresentaram maiores abundâncias na região a montante do reservatório. A distribuição longitudinal de Siluriformes observada pode ser interpretada como um efeito negativo do represamento. Resultados obtidos indicam que os impactos negativos na ictiofauna, consequentes da construção de pequenas barragens podem ser comparáveis aos impactos originados pela construção de grandes barragens. É necessário avaliar os impactos da construção de pequenas barragens na região Neotropical, pois pouco se sabe acerca desses impactos e como estes são comparáveis a grandes reservatórios.

The synthesis of efficient and reusable gold-based catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols is a strategy for the development of green processes. Pre-formed nanoparticles syntheses are an easy way to produce controlled-nanosized gold materials; however, the selection of a support is not trivial. Herein, we proposed a CoFe2O4 support enriched with Sr(OH)2, which holds remarkable properties and is suitable for the synthesis of a stable gold-based catalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. We suggested that the interaction between the CoFe2O4 and the Sr(OH)2 is highly important for the performance of the catalyst. Under the base-free condition of 2.5 h, 100 ºC and 2 bar of O2, the catalyst reached 58% of conversion with 76% of selectivity to benzaldehyde. With K2CO3 addition, the conversion and selectivity to benzaldehyde increased to 87% and 88%, respectively. Any gold leaching was detected in 5 successive runs, attesting the noticeable stability that the catalyst presents. This work provides great potential for the selective oxidation of alcohols with high activity since the magnetic properties of the catalyst provide an easy route and allows the separation of the medium reaction. In addition, we are here proposing an important interaction between the Sr(OH)2 and the magnetic nanoparticles.

Microalgae lipid-derived biofuels is considered promising candidates for substitution of petroleum-based energy sources. However, the lipid extraction from the algal biomass stands as a challenge due to its low yields and cost-intensive cell disruption procedures. In this study a multivariate optimization of the extraction conditions was suggested, aiming a maximization of the lipid extraction from Scenedesmus sp. microalgae grown using wastewater as a nutrient medium. The extraction method, extraction time, solvent mixture and pretreatment were considered between upper and lower levels in order to access their significance, including their interactions, on the experimental response, while using a reduced number of experiments. The studies were performed using low-cost extraction methods (magnetic stirring and ultrasonication). The optimal extraction condition was obtained using CHCl3:MeOH (2:1) solvent mixture, in a 2-hour extraction period using ultrasonication. Fatty acid profiles of extracted lipids were also evaluated.

This article reports the synthesis and characterization of pure and N-, B-, and Ag-doped TiO2 and the ability of these oxides to photodegrade methylene blue (MB) under sunlight or UV-ABC radiation. The compounds were synthesized using the sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photocatalytic efficiency was significantly increased by N-doping, resulting in 98% MB decomposition under UV-ABC irradiation for 180 min. Ag- and B-doped TiO2 lowered MB degradation rates to 52 and 73%, respectively, compared with pure TiO2. The same behavior was observed with exposure to UV-Vis, with 88, 65, 60, and 42% MB removal with N-doped, pure, B-doped, and Ag-doped TiO2, respectively. Under visible light alone, N-doped TiO2 exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency than commercial P25-type TiO2. Photocatalysis with N-doped TiO2 proved to be a promising alternative for MB degradation, given the potential of employing solar energy, thus minimizing operating costs.

ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of this video is to present the laparoscopic repair of a VUF in a 42-year-old woman, with gross hematuria, in the immediate postoperative phase following a cesarean delivery. The obstetric team implemented conservative management, including Foley catheter insertion, for 2 weeks. She subsequently developed intermittent hematuria and cystitis. The urology team was consulted 15 days after cesarean delivery. Cystoscopy indicated an ulcerated lesion in the bladder dome of approximately 1.0cm in size. Hysterosalpingography and a pelvic computed tomography scan indicated a fistula. Materials and Methods: Laparoscopic repair was performed 30 days after the cesarean delivery. The patient was placed in the lithotomy position while also in an extreme Trendelenburg position. Pneumoperitoneum was established using a Veress needle in the midline infra-umbilical region, and a primary 11-mm port was inserted. Another 11-mm port was inserted exactly between the left superior iliac spine and the umbilicus. Two other 5-mm ports were established under laparoscopic guidance in the iliac fossa on both sides. The omental adhesions in the pelvis were carefully released and the peritoneum between the bladder and uterus was incised via cautery. Limited cystotomy was performed, and the specific sites of the fistula and the ureteral meatus were identified; thereafter, the posterior bladder wall was adequately mobilized away from the uterus. The uterine rent was then closed using single 3/0Vicryl sutures and two-layer watertight closure of the urinary bladder was achieved by using 3/0Vicryl sutures. An omental flap was mobilized and inserted between the uterus and the urinary bladder, and was fixed using two 3/0Vicryl sutures, followed by tube drain insertion. Results: The operative time was 140 min, whereas the blood loss was 100ml. The patient was discharged 3 days after surgery, and the catheter was removed 12 days after surgery. Discussion: Laparoscopy has advantages over open surgery in that it is associated with less pain, shorter length of hospital stay, better cosmesis, quicker recovery, and equal efficacy. Although cases of VUF are rarely noted, the laparoscopic skill obtained through other urological procedures suggest, that laparoscopic repair may be the procedure of choice for such cases (2). The reported operative time for the laparoscopic repair of VUF in the literature varies between 140 and 220 min (3). However, laparoscopic techniques should be considered as a mode of abdominal access and should not influence the method of surgical repair. Surgical success should depend on the adherence to good technique rather than the approach. Hence, this method appears to be a viable alternative for surgeons experienced with laparoscopic suturing techniques. Conclusion: Laparoscopic repair appears to be a viable alternative for surgeons experienced with laparoscopic suturing techniques.

Quantification of metal loading in supported catalysts is imperative; however, the analytical methods are usually time-consuming, expensive, and require sophisticated equipment and sample extraction with hazardous and corrosive strong acids. Herein, we report a new method for quantification of metal in supported catalysts using slurry sampling flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The slurry sampling method was used for determination of gold and the results were similar to those obtained with the traditional extraction method using aqua regia; however, it overcomes the main drawbacks associated with sample digestion by avoiding the use of concentrated toxic reagents, minimizing sample manipulation, and consequently, reducing the risks of contamination and the sample preparation time. Ultrasound radiation optimization associated with the solvent, mass of sample, concentration, and matrix effect in the slurry analysis allowed direct analysis by using the calibration in aqueous medium. The slurry sampling procedure could be applied to other catalysts with different supports and in bimetallic systems.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.

Abstract This study was carried out to define strategies for the saline water irrigation management in bean plant, based on soil water potential, as well as on physiological and production parameters. The experiment was conducted in the lysimeter station at the drainage and irrigation experimental area, located at campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, MG. Treatments consisted of seven leaching fractions corresponding to 40, 31, 25, 23, 16, 14 and 3% of the irrigation water depth; for the leaching fraction of 3%, the fresh water (0.07 dS m-1) was used, whereas for the saline water (2 dS m-1) for the other fractions were used. According to the results, the appropriate irrigation management for the bean plant under saline stress requires: addition of the osmotic component in the soil water potential to the matrix component; leaching of the excessive salts of the soil profile; estimate of the relative crop production; and physiological measurements.
Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi definir estratégias de manejo de irrigação na cultura do feijoeiro com água salina, com base no potencial da água no solo, parâmetros fisiológicos e de produção. O experimento foi conduzido na estação lisimétrica da área experimental de irrigação e drenagem, campus da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, MG. Os tratamentos consistiram de sete frações de lixiviação, equivalentes a 40, 31, 25, 23, 16, 14 e 3% da lâmina de água de irrigação, sendo que, para a fração de lixiviação de 3%, usou-se água doce (0,07 dS m-1) e, para as demais, água salina (2 dS m-1). O manejo adequado da irrigação do feijoeiro, sob condições de estresse salino, requer: adição do componente osmótico do potencial da água no solo ao componente matricial; lixiviação do excesso de sais do perfil do solo; estimativa da produção relativa da cultura e medições fisiológicas.

INTRODUÇÃO: O número de casos notificados de tétano acidental no Estado de São Paulo sofreu redução. O declínio do número de casos de qualquer doença sempre traz transformações no seu perfil epidemiológico, que devem sempre ser analisadas para aprimorar as medidas preventivas. Assim, foi analisado o perfil clínico e epidemiológico dos casos de tétano internados em hospital universitário de Campinas de 1989 a 1996. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Estudo descritivo e retrospectivo (série de casos). Todos os pacientes com diagnóstico de tétano de janeiro de 1989 a março de 1996, internados no hospital universitário, foram analisados. RESULTADOS: Catorze (28%) eram da zona rural e 36 (72%) da zona urbana. A idade média foi de 47,6 anos e a mediana de 49,5. Dos pacientes da zona rural, 42,8% tinham até 30 anos e 21,42% tinham mais de 50 anos, sendo a média 36,21 e a mediana 34,5; dos pacientes da zona urbana, 13,9% tinham até 30 anos e 58,3% mais de 50 anos, sendo a média de 52,2 e a mediana de 54,5. A letalidade foi de 20%, mais elevada nos pacientes curarizados (60%). CONCLUSÃO: Na região estudada existem dois padrões epidemiológicos: o rural, com maior número de jovens, refletindo uma vacinação inadequada, e o urbano, semelhante ao dos países desenvolvidos, com predomínio das faixas etárias mais altas.

An acute care 400 - bed university referral hospital situated in a densely populated and highly urbanized area in Southeastern Brazil (Campinas, SP). Patient records the data-base analysed were from the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the hospital. RESULTS: In the 57 month period from January 1989 to March 1996 fifty-three patients were admitted with a diagnosis of acquired tetanus. Fifty patients had clinical confirmation, 3 were otherwise diagnosed. Thirty-two (64%) were male and 18 (36%) female. Fourteen (28%) were from rural areas and 36 (72%) from urban. Mean age was 47.6 years, with a median of 49.5. Of the rural patients, 42.85% were under 30 years and 21.42% were over 50, mean age was 36.21 with a median of 34.5. Fewer urban patients were under 30 (13.88%) than over 50 (58.33%), mean age was 52.19 with a median of 54.5. Trismus was the most frequent (92.0%) clinical sign on admittance, followed by abdominal muscular rigidity (84.0%). Treatment measures were uniform and included tetanus immune globulin, antibiotics, surgical debridement of the wound when feasible, diazepan or curare depending on the intensity of spasms. In the second half of the study period, penicillin was replaced by metronidazol. Overall case fatality rate was 20%, in patients that had to receive curare, it was 60%. Hospitalization exceeded 21 days in 56% (28) of the cases, only 10% (5) had a hospital stay of less than 7 days. CONCLUSION: A high proportion of patients were from rural areas, despite an urbanization rate of more than 90%. In the Campinas region there are two different epidemiological patterns of acquired tetanus: a rural pattern, with a higher proportion of younger patients, determined by an inadequate immunization rate and an urban pattern, similar to that found in industrialized countries, with a higher proportion of older patients. RECOMMENDATIONS: There is an obvious need to immunize older individuals in urban areas and young adults in rural areas. The elimination of acquired tetanus will only be achieved with a wider and more intensive adult vaccination program.
