RESUMO A baixa qualidade de mudas pode advir de problemas na irrigação e/ou nutrição das mudas em sua fase de formação em viveiros. Em relação à irrigação, problemas podem surgir referentes à má distribuição da água ou mesmo seu manejo, levando ao deficit ou ao excesso de irrigação, enquanto o excesso pode lixiviar nutrientes, o deficit pode prejudicar o desenvolvimento da planta. Assim, o presente trabalho teve como objetivos avaliar a eficiência de irrigação de um sistema de irrigação por microaspersão já instalado em um viveiro de mudas de espécies florestais e também avaliar a eficiência de um sistema de subirrigação de mudas florestais nativas cultivadas em tubetes. A avaliação da eficiência da microaspersão foi realizada em um viveiro de mudas de espécies nativas florestais na cidade de Itutinga - MG, o delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado (DIC) em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, estando o equipamento de irrigação na parcela (três níveis: MA-20, Rondo e Inverted Rotor Spray) e três espécies florestais na subparcela. Na avaliação de eficiência em tubetes de 300 cm³, as categorias da subparcela foram: araucária (Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze.), jerivá (Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman) e cutieira (Joannesia princeps Vell.). Em tubetes de 110 cm³ os três níveis da subparcela foram as espécies: mutamba (Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.), angico-vermelho (Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth.) e peroba-rosa (Aspidosperma polyneuron Muell.). A avaliação da eficiência da subirrigação foi realizada em uma estufa localizada na Universidade Federal de Lavras, em dois tanques de subirrigação em três repetições. As maiores eficiências de aplicação foram obtidas para o emissor modelo MA-20. Não houve diferenças significativas entre a eficiência de aplicação dos microaspersores em relação às espécies estudadas, em ambos os tubetes. A eficiência de irrigação no tanque de tubetes de 300 cm³ foi 90,42%, enquanto para tubetes de 110 cm³ foi 92,17%. Os tanques de subirrigação mostraram-se como alternativa interessante para irrigação de mudas das espécies florestais testadas, apresentando alta eficiência para os dois tamanhos de tubetes avaliados.

ABSTRACT Seedlings low quality can result due to problems in irrigation and/or nutrition of seedlings in their nursery phase. Regarding irrigation, problems can arise related to low uniformity of water application or its management, leading to lack or excess of water. While the excess can leach nutrients, the deficit can affect plant growth. Thus, this work had as objective to evaluate irrigation efficiency of a microsprinkler irrigation system at a forest native species nursery and also at sub-irrigation of forest native species being raised in recipient tubes The microsplinkler irrigation efficiency evaluation was performed in a native forest nursery at Itutinga - MG city, held in completely randomized design in split plots scheme, with the irrigation equipment on the plot (three levels: MA-20, Rondo and Inverted Rotor Spray) and three forest species on subplot. For efficiency evaluation in large tubes, the categories of subplot were: Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze., Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman and Joannesia princeps Vell. In small tubes, the three levels of subplots were the species: Guazuma ulmifolia Lam., Anadenanthera macrocarpa Benth. and Aspidosperma polyneuron Muell. The sub-irrigation efficiency evaluation was conducted in a greenhouse located at UFLA, in two sub-irrigation tanks with three replications, through calculation of uniformity coefficients for each sub-irrigated species, done in three replications. The largest application efficiency was obtained for the MA-20 emitter. There were no significant differences between the application efficiency of the emitters relative to the cultivated species, in both tube sizes. The efficiency in 300 cm³ tubes irrigation tank was 90.42%, while for 110 cm³ tubes it was 92.17%. Sub-irrigation tanks proved to be an interesting alternative for irrigation of the tested forest species seedlings, with high efficiency for both tubes sizes.

OBJETIVO: Comparar a função pulmonar de pacientes com síndrome pós-poliomielite à de pacientes com sequelas de poliomielite paralítica (sem quaisquer sinais ou sintomas de síndrome pós-poliomielite) e à de sujeitos saudáveis. MÉTODOS: Vinte e nove sujeitos do sexo masculino foram divididos em três grupos: controle, poliomielite (pacientes que sofreram de poliomielite paralítica, mas que não apresentaram síndrome pós-poliomielite) e síndrome pós-poliomielite. Os voluntários foram submetidos a avaliações da função pulmonar (espirometria e avaliação da força muscular respiratória). RESULTADOS: Os resultados da espirometria não revelaram diferenças significantes entre os grupos, à exceção da ventilação voluntária máxima, cuja média no grupo síndrome pós-poliomielite foi aproximadamente 27% mais baixa que no grupo controle (p = 0,0127). No entanto, os valores de ventilação voluntária máxima observados no grupo pós-poliomielite foram comparados aos da população brasileira e se apresentaram dentro da faixa normal. Não foram observadas diferenças significantes entre os grupos no tocante à força muscular respiratória. CONCLUSÕES: À exceção da ventilação voluntária máxima mais baixa, não houve comprometimento significante da função pulmonar em pacientes ambulatoriais com diagnóstico de síndrome pós-poliomielite quando comparados a pacientes com sequelas de poliomielite, mas sem a síndrome pós-poliomielite e a sujeitos saudáveis. Trata-se de um importante achado clínico, pois mostra que pacientes com síndrome pós-poliomielite podem apresentar função pulmonar preservada.

OBJECTIVE: To compare lung function between patients with post-poliomyelitis syndrome and those with sequelae of paralytic poliomyelitis (without any signs or symptoms of post-poliomyelitis syndrome), as well as between patients with post-poliomyelitis syndrome and healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-nine male participants were assigned to one of three groups: control; poliomyelitis (comprising patients who had had paralytic poliomyelitis but had not developed post-poliomyelitis syndrome); and post-poliomyelitis syndrome. Volunteers underwent lung function measurements (spirometry and respiratory muscle strength assessment). RESULTS: The results of the spirometric assessment revealed no significant differences among the groups except for an approximately 27% lower mean maximal voluntary ventilation in the post-poliomyelitis syndrome group when compared with the control group (p = 0.0127). Nevertheless, the maximal voluntary ventilation values for the post-poliomyelitis group were compared with those for the Brazilian population and were found to be normal. No significant differences were observed in respiratory muscle strength among the groups. CONCLUSIONS: With the exception of lower maximal voluntary ventilation, there was no significant lung function impairment in outpatients diagnosed with post-poliomyelitis syndrome when compared with healthy subjects and with patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis without post-poliomyelitis syndrome. This is an important clinical finding because it shows that patients with post-poliomyelitis syndrome can have preserved lung function.

CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Serviços de telessaúde e telemedicina estão avançando rapidamente, com um espectro cada vez maior de tecnologias da informação e comunicação que podem ser aplicadas de forma ampla para a saúde da população, bem como para a educação médica. O objetivo deste artigo é relatar a experiência da nossa instituição com 100 reuniões por videoconferência entre cinco diferentes países das Américas no período de um ano. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Estudo retrospectivo na Universidade Estadual de Campinas. MÉTODOS: Através de um banco de dados do Microsoft Excel, foram analisadas retrospectivamente todas as conferências realizadas em nossa instituição, de setembro de 2009 a agosto de 2010, em todas as especialidades. RESULTADOS: Um total de 647 alunos, médicos e professores participaram das reuniões de telemedicina. Em média, 8,3 (± 4,3) teleconferências foram realizadas mensalmente durante o período analisado. Excluindo os feriados e o mês de inauguração do anfiteatro de telemedicina, as nossas taxas de teleconferência atingiram a média de 10,3 (± 2,7), ou duas teleconferências sobre uma média semanal. Cirurgia do Trauma e reuniões sobre segurança dos pacientes foram, de longe, os temas mais comuns discutidos em nossas reuniões de teleconferência, correspondendo por 22% e 21% do total de chamadas. CONCLUSÃO: Nossa experiência com as reuniões de telemedicina aumentou o interesse dos alunos, ajudou a nossa instituição a acompanhar e discutir protocolos que já são aceitos em todo o mundo e estimulou nossos professores a promover pesquisas relacionadas à telemedicina em suas próprias especialidades, mantendo-os atualizados. Essas reuniões com envolvimento de alta tecnologia encurtaram as distâncias dentro de nosso país vasto e com outros centros de referência no exterior. Esta proximidade virtual permitiu discussões com alunos e residentes sobre estágios internacionais a fim de aumentar seu conhecimento global e melhorar a sua educação dentro da própria instituição.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Telehealth and telemedicine services are advancing rapidly, with an increasing spectrum of information and communication technologies that can be applied broadly to the population's health, and to medical education. The aim here was to report our institution's experience from 100 videoconferencing meetings between five different countries in the Americas over a one-year period. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective study at Universidade Estadual de Campinas. METHODS: Through a Microsoft Excel database, all conferences in all specialties held at our institution from September 2009 to August 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 647 students, physicians and professors participated in telemedicine meetings. A monthly mean of 8.3 (± 4.3) teleconferences were held over the analysis period. Excluding holidays and the month of inaugurating the telemedicine theatre, our teleconference rate reached a mean of 10.3 (± 2.7), or two teleconferences a week, on average. Trauma surgery and meetings on patient safety were by far the most common subjects discussed in our teleconference meetings, accounting for 22% and 21% of the total calls. CONCLUSION: Our experience with telemedicine meetings has increased students' interest; helped our institution to follow and discuss protocols that are already accepted worldwide; and stimulated professors to promote telemedicine-related research in their own specialties and keep up-to-date. These high-technology meetings have shortened distances in our vast country, and to other reference centers abroad. This virtual proximity has enabled discussion of international training with students and residents, to increase their overall knowledge and improve their education within this institution.

INTRODUCTION: Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle appears to be increasing in athletes. However, the optimal treatment strategy has not yet been established. OBJECTIVES: To compare the isokinetic shoulder performance after surgical treatment to that after non-surgical treatment for pectoralis major muscle rupture. METHODS: We assessed 33 pectoralis major muscle ruptures (18 treated non-surgically and 15 treated surgically). Horizontal abduction and adduction as well as external and internal rotation at 60 and 120 degrees/s were tested in both upper limbs. Peak torque, total work, contralateral deficiency, and the peak torque agonist-to-antagonist ratio were measured. RESULTS: Contralateral muscular deficiency did not differ between the surgical and non-surgical treatment modalities. However, the surgical group presented twice the number of athletes with clinically acceptable contralateral deficiency (<20%) for internal rotators compared to the non-surgical group. The peak torque ratio between the external and internal rotator muscles revealed a similar deficit of the external rotation in both groups and on both sides (surgical, 61.60% and 57.80% and non-surgical, 62.06% and 54.06%, for the dominant and non-dominant sides, respectively). The peak torque ratio revealed that the horizontal adduction muscles on the injured side showed similar weakness in both groups (surgical, 86.27%; non-surgical, 98.61%). CONCLUSIONS: This study included the largest single series of athletes reported to date for this type of injury. A comparative analysis of muscular strength and balance showed no differences between the treatment modalities for pectoralis major muscle rupture. However, the number of significant clinical deficiencies was lower in the surgical group than in the non-surgical group, and both treatment modalities require greater attention to the rehabilitation process, especially for the recovery of muscle strength and balance.

Pessoas com epilepsia apresentam baixa participação em atividades físicas. Um importante problema nos cuidados da epilepsia é a falta de profissionais qualificados. Neste estudo apresentamos dados de uma pesquisa para avaliar o conhecimento de professores de educação física sobre a epilepsia. Um questionário foi respondido por 134 educadores físicos de ambos os sexos. Sessenta por cento dos profissionais acreditam que a crise epilética é uma descarga elétrica anormal do cérebro, 13% que a epilepsia é uma doença crônica cerebral que não pode ser curada ou controlada, 84% que pessoas que têm convulsões não necessariamente apresentam epilepsia e 5% que pessoas com epilepsia têm dificuldade de aprendizado. Em relação à experiência prévia do profissional, 61% presenciaram uma crise epilética e 53% tiveram acesso a alguma informação sobre epilepsia. Além disso, 28% dos profissionais possuíam amigo ou parente com epilepsia, 14% tinham um aluno com epilepsia e 29% já tinham socorrido alguém durante uma crise. Nossos achados revelam uma falta de conhecimento apropriado dos profissionais da área de educação física sobre a epilepsia. A melhora desse conhecimento pode contribuir para um adequado tratamento e cuidado da pessoa com epilepsia.

People with epilepsy suffer from a considerable lack of physical activity. In addition, an important problem of epilepsy management is the lack of qualified professionals. In this study we present data from a survey which aimed to assess physical educators' general knowledge about epilepsy. One hundred and thirty four physical educators of both sexes answered a questionnaire. Sixty percent of the professionals believe that a seizure is an abnormal electrical discharge of the brain, 13% that epilepsy is a cerebral chronic disease that can not be cured or controlled, 84% that people having convulsions will not necessarily present epilepsy and 5% that people with epilepsy have difficulties of learning. Questions concerned previous professional experience with epilepsy showed that 61% have seen a seizure and 53% have access to some information about epilepsy. Thus, 28% of professionals have a friend or relative with epilepsy, 14% have a student with epilepsy, and 29% helped someone during seizures. Our findings reveal a lack of physical educators' appropriate knowledge about epilepsy. Improvement of this might contribute to the improvement of epilepsy care/management.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the well-known predisposing factors and signs and symptoms usually associated with either overreaching or overtraining syndrome in physical fitness centers in São Paulo City, Brazil. METHOD: A questionnaire consisting of 13 question groups pertaining to either predisposing factors (1-7) or signs and symptoms (8-13) was given to 413 subjects. The general training schedule of the volunteers was characterized by workout sessions of 2.18 ± 0.04 h for a total of 11.0 ± 0.3 h/week for 33 ± 2 months independent of the type of exercise performed (walking, running, spinning, bodybuilding and stretching). A mean score was calculated ranging from 1 (completely absent) to 5 (severe) for each question group. A low occurrence was considered to be a question group score lower than 4, which was observed in all 13 question groups. RESULTS: The psychological evaluation by POMS Mood State Questionnaire indicated a normal non-inverted iceberg. The hematological parameters, creatine kinase activity, cortisol, total testosterone and free testosterone concentrations were within the normal ranges for the majority of the volunteers selected for this analysis (n = 60). CONCLUSION: According to the questionnaire score analysis, no predisposing factors or signs and symptoms usually associated with either overreaching or overtraining were detected among the members of physical fitness centers in São Paulo City, Brazil. This observation was corroborated by the absence of any significant hematological or stress hormone level alterations in blood analyses of the majority of the selected volunteers (n = 60).

OBJECTIVE: Blood neurotrophins, such as the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, are considered to be of great importance in mediating the benefits of physical exercise. In this study, the effect of acute strength exercise and the involvement of small versus large muscle mass on the levels of plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor were evaluated in healthy individuals. METHODS: The concentric strengths of knee (large) and elbow (small) flexor and extensor muscles were measured on two separate days. Venous blood samples were obtained from 16 healthy subjects before and after exercise. RESULTS: The levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the plasma did not significantly increase after both arm and leg exercise. There was no significant difference in the plasma levels of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the arms and legs. CONCLUSION: The present results demonstrate that acute strength exercise does not induce significant alterations in the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor plasma concentrations in healthy individuals. Considering that its levels may be affected by various factors, such as exercise, these findings suggest that the type of exercise program may be a decisive factor in altering peripheral brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

O impacto do exercício sobre o trato gastrintestinal (TGI), apesar de pouco investigado, é uma área de grande interesse. O exercício aeróbio intenso e de longa duração pode provocar sintomas gastrintestinais. Estes podem ser divididos em sintomas superiores (vômitos, náuseas e pirose retroesternal - azia) e inferiores (diarréia, cólica abdominal, perda de apetite, sangramento, aceleração dos movimentos intestinais e vontade de defecar). A etiologia desses sintomas durante o exercício é multifatorial e inclui a redução do fluxo sanguíneo intestinal, a liberação de hormônios gastrintestinais, o estresse mecânico sobre o TGI, a desidratação, os fatores psicológicos, a idade, o sexo, a dieta e o nível de treinamento do indivíduo. Por outro lado, o exercício de baixa intensidade tem efeito protetor sobre o TGI, principalmente com relação à predisposição a certas doenças como o câncer de cólon, a diverticulite, a colelitíase e a constipação. Diversos mecanismos são postulados para explicar os efeitos do exercício sobre o TGI, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento de estratégias terapêuticas no tratamento de indivíduos com sintomas e doenças gastrintestinais.

The impact of exercise on the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), although being little investigated, is a field of high interest. Intense endurance aerobic exercise can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms. These symptoms can be classified into upper symptoms (vomiting, nausea and retrosternal pyrosis - heartburn) and lower symptoms (diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, bleeding, accelerated bowel transit time, urge to defecate). These symptoms’ etiology during exercise is multifactorial and includes: reduction of intestinal blood flow, release of gastrointestinal hormones, mechanical stress on the GI tract, dehydration, psychological factors, age, gender, diet, and training status. On the other hand, low intensity exercise has a protective effect on the GI tract; mainly, with certain diseases, such as, colon cancer, diverticular disease, cholelithiases, and constipation. A variety of mechanisms have been postulated to explain the effects of exercise on the GI tract, contributing to the development of therapeutic strategies in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and diseases.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present data from a survey that aimed to assess the physical activity habits of adult Brazilian patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. METHOD: Fifty male and female patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder participated in this study. The mean age at onset was 37±12 years, and the mean time between diagnosis and follow-up was 3.6±4.2 years. RESULTS: Substantial changes in physical activity habits were observed following the onset of PTSD. While more than half of the patients participated in physical activities prior to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder onset, there was a significant reduction in their participation afterwards. The justifications for stopping physical activities or sport participation were lack of time and lack of motivation. DISCUSSION: Several studies have shown that physical exercise decreases reverts symptoms of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and social isolation. We could therefore hypothesize that patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder who exercise should experience the same benefits. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder have low levels of participation in sports or physical activities.

This study aimed to analyze the knowledge of a patient group at a philanthropic hospital in the interior of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, on generic drugs they were taking. Twenty-five patients discharged from the medical clinic in October 2006 were interviewed at home. Data collection was undertaken between November 18th, 2006 and January 03rd, 2007 through a questionnaire that asked the name, dose, frequency, time, expected effect and side-effect, among others. Five (20%) patients did not know the name of the drug they were taking, 7 (28%) did not know the dose, 4 (16%) did not know the frequency, l6 (24%) did not know the expected effect, 21 (84%) did not know the side effect and 14 (56%) did not know what generic drugs are. It was evidenced that patients have little knowledge on generic medication, which demands wide-ranging educational actions by nurses.

La finalidad de este estudio fue analizar el conocimiento de un grupo de pacientes de un hospital filantrópico en el interior del Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, acerca de los medicamentos genéricos utilizados por ellos. Se entrevistaron en domicilio 25 pacientes, que recibieron alta hospitalaria de la Clínica Médica en octubre de 2006. Las entrevistas fueron realizadas en el período entre 18 de noviembre de 2006 y 03 de enero de 2007, por medio de un cuestionario que abarcó nombre, dosis, frecuencia, horario, efecto esperado y efecto colateral, entre otros. Se destacó que 5 (20%) desconocen el nombre del medicamento que utilizan; 7 (28%) desconocen la dosis; 4 (16%), la frecuencia; l6 (24%), el efecto esperado; 21 (84%), el efecto colateral; y 14 (56%) no saben qué es medicamento genérico. Se verificó un reducido conocimiento acerca de los medicamentos genéricos, siendo necesarias acciones educativas amplias por parte del enfermero.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o conhecimento de um grupo de pacientes de uma Santa Casa do interior do Estado de Minas Gerais acerca dos medicamentos genéricos por eles utilizados. Foram entrevistados, em domicílio, 25 pacientes que obtiveram alta hospitalar da Clínica Médica no mês de outubro de 2006. Os dados foram coletados no período de 18 de novembro de 2006 a 03 de janeiro de 2007, por meio de um questionário que versou sobre nome, dose, freqüência, horário, efeito esperado e efeito colateral, dentre outros. Constatou-se que 5 pacientes (20%) desconheciam os nomes dos medicamentos que utilizam, 7 (28%) a dose, 4 (16%) a freqüência, l6 (24%) o efeito esperado, 21 (84%) o efeito colateral e 14 (56%) não sabiam o que é medicamento genérico. Verificou-se um diminuto conhecimento acerca dos medicamentos genéricos, sendo necessárias amplas ações educativas por parte do enfermeiro.

Estudou-se a competência vetorial de Lutzomyia intermedia (Diptera: Psychodidae) do Vale do Ribeira (SP) para estirpes de Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), mediante pesquisa de infectividade natural; exposições de fêmeas silvestres e colonizadas (F1) às lesões de hamsters experimentalmente infectados e testes de transmissão via picada. A infectividade natural e os testes de transmissão revelaram-se negativos e, nas exposições, foram obtidas positividades de 74% (123+/166 dissecados) e 70% (115+/164 dissecados) para fêmeas silvestres e colonizadas respectivamente, e o desenvolvimento das formas evolutivas compatíveis com o modelo Peripilaria. A suscetibilidade às estirpes testadas associada aos indicadores epidemiológicos concorrem para a suspeita do papel vetorial de Lutzomyia intermedia na região estudada.

This paper investigated the vectorial competence of Lutzomyia intermedia (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Vale do Ribeira (SP) to strains of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), by means of a search for natural infection; exposure of wild and colonized females (F1) to the lesions of experimentally infected hamsters and transmission tests by bite. The natural infection and the transmission tests were negative. In the exposures of Lu. intermedia to infected lesions we found rates of 74% (123+/166 dissected) and 70% (115+/164 dissected) for the wild and colonized females respectively. The development of the parasites was compatible with the development model of Peripilaria. The susceptibility of the tested strains associated with the epidemiological indicators contribute to the vectorial role suspicion of Lutzomyia intermedia in the studied region.
