Abstract The archipelago of Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony until 1975. Often compared to Brazil and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, Cape Verde was an important territory, in terms of propaganda, for the defence of the Portuguese colonial empire. This case study analyzes the writings of Captain Augusto Casimiro dos Santos, who helped to create the propagandistic construct of Cape Verde as a reflection of 15th and 16th century Portugal. Using a multiplicity of sources, some of them unpublished, the paper discusses Casimiro’s thought against his contemporaries and its influence in colonial circles during the transition from social Darwinism to Luso tropicalism.

Abstract This paper presents a numerical evaluation, using PLAXIS 2D finite element software, of the effects of varying the distance of the heavy compaction from the face in a geosynthetic reinforced soil wall (GRSW). The main effects studied were the tensions in the reinforcements and the horizontal deformations of the face, including the influence of the type of shear strength envelope (total stresses or effective stresses) of the soil. In this study, a young gneiss residual soil (silty sand) was studied to obtain the grain size distribution, index properties and parameters of strength and deformability. This soil was considered for backfill in hypothetical sections of GRSW. The numerical results contributed to a better understanding of the GRSW behaviour, with evaluations closer to real field conditions. In the analyses carried out, when increasing the heavy compaction distance from the face, there are tendencies pointing to the reduction of the tensions in the reinforcements, displacement toward the interior of the soil mass of the points at which the maximum reinforcement tension occurs and reduction of the horizontal deformations of the face.

Abstract This article addresses an analysis of the Load Equivalency Factor (LEF) for off-road trucks. A new LEF curve for single axles with dual wheels covering trucks from 6.0 to 151.42 tons per axle is proposed, converting various magnitudes of damage from wheel loads to damage caused by the standard axle load of 8.2 tons. Then, this damage ratio was raised to the exponent proposed by Pereira (1992), and LEF for the considered loads was obtained. In the determination of LEF from the structural response of the subgrade, it was confirmed that LEF values did not suffer significant variations with the various parameters adopted, encompassing variations in the axle loads between 6 and 151.42 tons, tire pressures of 80.0, 100.0 and 120.0 psi, as well as five different pavement structures. In the study, LEF remained stable even in pavement structures with low and high axle capacities. In order to validate the results, the resulting factors were then compared with those proposed by DNIT (2006), displaying a coefficient of determination of 0.99. The conclusion is that pavements for off-roads trucks can be designed using the procedure recommended by DNIT (2006) for flexible pavement, without extrapolation of the respective LEF curve.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: This study describes cases of syphilis in pregnancy (SiP) and congenital syphilis (CS) and identifies factors associated with mother-to-child transmission in patients in Itapeva from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014. METHODS: Using SiP and CS notification forms and medical records, a cross-sectional study involving 149 pregnant women was conducted. RESULTS: Annual SiP detection rates ranged from 16.3-31.4/1000 live births. Most women had prenatal care started at the first trimester of pregnancy with ≥6 visits. Mother-to-child transmission rate was 69.7%. CS incidence rates varied from 9.1-22.3/1000 live births. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest low quality of prenatal care.

ABSTRACT. Effects of different microalgal diets on the growth and on the survival of Anomalocardia brasiliana larvae between trochophore and pediveliger stages were evaluated. Diets were evaluated in two separate experiments. The first tested the microalgae Isochrisys galbana (Ig), Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Phaeo), Chaetoceros calcitrans (Cca) and the combinations (Ig+Cca), (Ig+Phaeo) and (Cca+Phaeo). The second tested the microalgae C. calcitrans (Cca), Pavlova lutheri (Pl) and the combination (Cca+Pl). When provided alone, I. galbana resulted in survival and growth rates lower than the rest of the diets, and the best results achieved were obtained with P. tricornutum and C. calcitrans supplied alone or combined with other microalgae. However, in the second experiment the diet Cca+Pl resulted in better growth and survival rates (261.67 ± 9.64 pm and 31.50 ± 0.87%) than all diets tested in both experiments, therefore it is recommended for A. brasiliana larvae.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The authors present a case of a hemorrhagic adrenal cyst, one of the tumors known in literature as incidentalomas, emphasizing the clinical characteristics, since adrenal cysts or pseudocysts are generally rare and observed by chance during imaging procedures. Traditionally they are classified as pseudocysts, endothelial, epithelial or parasitic cysts. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy has been considered the treatment of choice for benign, functioning or non-functioning adrenal lesions. Small cystic adrenal tumors can be managed conservatively by laparoscopic decortication or marsupialization, but larger cysts should be treated by total or partial adrenalectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the existence of agreement between measurements of anteversion of the femoral neck and the degrees of osteoarthritis and abnormality of the neck-shaft angle in patients with unilateral idiopathic hip osteoarthritis, among three evaluators. METHODS: Forty- two patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis were evaluated by means of simple radiography and computed tomography. RESULTS: It was observed that there was no significant variation in femoral anteversion between the diseased and healthy hips. There was strongest agreement between observers 1 and 2 in relation to both the diseased hips (cases) and the healthy hips (controls). Moreover, no significant agreement was found between observers 1 and 3 (p = 0.13) and between observers 2 and 3 (p = 0.12), in relation to the neck-shaft angle of the control hips. CONCLUSION: Although there was no relationship between femoral anteversion and the neck-shaft angle in the patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis, the present study showed that there was also no relationship with these angular deviations.

The basidiomycete fungi Lentinus crinitus and Psilocybe castanella are being evaluated in a bioremediation process of soils contaminated with organochlorine industrial residues in the Baixada Santista, São Paulo. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of pH on the fungal growth, in vitro decolorization of anthraquinonic dye Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) and laccase activity. The pH of the culture medium influenced the growth of L. crinitus and P. castanella, which presented less growth at pH 5.9 and pH 2.7, respectively. The fungi were able to modify the pH of the culture medium, adjusting it to the optimum pH for growth which was close to 4.5. Decolorization of the RBBR was maximal at a pH of 2.5 to 3.5. Higher laccase activity was observed at pH 3.5 and pH 4.5 for L. crinitus and P. castanella, respectively. pH was found to be an important parameter for both the growth of these fungi and the enzymatic system involved in RBBR decolorization.

In this article we present the results of the effects of land use change on the river biogeochemistry of the Ji-Paraná basin (Rondônia). In this region, the spatial distribution of deforestation and soil properties result in different biogeochemical signals, allowing the division of the fluvial systems into three groups: rivers with low ionic concentration and low impact; rivers with intermediate ionic content and medium impact; and rivers with high ionic content and anthropogenic impact. River biogeochemical characteristics present a significant correlation with pasture area, the best predictor for electric conductivity (r² = 0,87), sodium (r² = 0,75), chloride (r² = 0,69), potassium (r² = 0,63), phosphate (r² = 0,78), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (r² = 0,52), inorganic carbon (r² = 0,81) and organic carbon (r² = 0,51). For calcium and magnesium, both soil properties and pasture explained most of the observed variability. Our results indicate that the changes observed at the micro-scale constitute "biogeochemical signals" generated by the material processing at the riparian zones. As the rivers evolve to higher orders, the persistent signals in the fluvial channels are very closely related to the drainage basin characteristics (soils and land use), which, in turn, become the determinant of these systems dynamics. While at the macro-scale (the whole basin) the effects of land use changes are not yet detectable in the Amazon, the disruption of the structure and functioning is occuring at the micro and meso scales, with significant alterations of nutrient cycling in fluvial ecosystems
