Abstract Sponge-ophiuroid ecological associations, which are important in the dynamics of marine populations and communities, have been recorded for a long time. In this study, we report new records of interactions between sponges and ophiuroids, which were obtained by analyzing biological collections, to increase knowledge about the associations between these animals. The study observed 14 interactions between sponges and ophiuroids, eight of which are new to science: Ophiocnida scabriuscula and Agelas sp., Ophiothrix sp. and Monanchora arbuscula, Ophiactis quinqueradia and M. arbuscula, O. quinqueradia and Callyspongia ( Cladochalina) aculeata, Ophiactis savignyi and Agelas dispar, O. savignyi and M. arbuscula, O. savignyi and Topsentia ophiraphidites, and O. savignyi and Dysidea etheria. The specimens found were collected in four areas of the northeastern Brazilian coast (tropical southwestern Atlantic), including a conservation area and a mesophotic coral ecosystem. Thus, the continuation of studies and the implementation of conservation strategies for these environments are essential. Finally, the importance of biological collections as a crucial data source for biodiversity studies is reinforced. Abstract The introduction of species beyond their natural distribution area as a result of human activities is one of the main threats to marine biodiversity. In 2019, Perna viridis , an Indo-Pacific mytilid, was recorded for the first time in the coast of Brazil in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro State). In 2021, this species was recorded in the Northeast region of Brazil (Fortaleza, Ceará State). This record was subsequently replicated in studies from 2022, 2023, and 2024. The specimens from Ceará State were deposited in the malacological collection “Prof. Henry Ramos Matthews - Série B” of the Universidade Federal do Ceará. During a curation activity of this collection, these specimens were reanalyzed and their identification questioned. Therefore, this study aimed to confirm the record of P. viridis for the Northeast region of Brazil. RESUMO Nós investigamos a variação espacial das assembleias de moluscos em função de diferentes habitats formados por fauna séssil e substrato rochoso em uma zona entre marés rochosa no nordeste do Brasil. O substrato da zona entre marés superior era predominantemente recoberto por cracas [Chthamalus bisinuatus (Pilsbry, 1916)], da zona entre marés média por mexilhões [Brachidontes exustus (Linnaeus, 1758)] e da zona entre marés inferior por macroalgas clorofíceas [Gayralia oxysperma (Kützing) K. L. Vinogradova ex Scagel et al., 1989 and Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, 1753], feofíceas [Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh, 1820] e rodofíceas [Palisada flagellifera (J. Agardh) K. W. Nam, 2007]. Foram registrados 3861 moluscos pertecentes às classes Gastropoda (9 espécies; 3800 indivíduos), Bivalvia (3 spp.; 54 ind.), e Polyplacophora (1 sp.; 7 ind.). A diversidade funcional foi analisada através da estrutura trófica, na qual identificamos as guildas alimentares: suspensívoros, raspadores, herbívoros e carnívoros. Abundância, riqueza de espécies, diversidade de Shannon, uniformidade de Pielou e diversidade trófica variaram em função dos habitats formados por cracas, mexilhões, algas e substrato rochoso. Habitats formados por algas e mexilhões apresentaram elevada riqueza de espécies e diversidade trófica, entretanto, apresentaram baixa abundância. Ao contrário, o habitat formado por cracas registrou baixa riqueza e diversidade trófica e elevado número de indivíduos. O substrato rochoso apresentou valores baixos em todos os índices investigados. Esse resultado mostra o efeito da modificação ambiental provocada pela fauna séssil nesse sistema. Esses organismos aumentam a complexidade ambiental e viabilizam o estabelecimento de organismos por meio de processos de facilitação. As diferentes guildas alimentares encontradas neste estudo reafirmam o papel dos substratos biológicos no fornecimento de nichos capazes de suportar diferentes padrões de ocupação.

ABSTRACT We investigated the spatial variation of molluscan assemblages with different habitat-forming species and bare rock habitat in a rocky intertidal zone in northeastern Brazil. The high intertidal zone substrate was covered predominantly of barnacles [Chthamalus bisinuatus (Pilsbry, 1916)], the mid-intertidal of mussels [Brachidontes exustus (Linnaeus, 1758)] and the low intertidal of macroalgae chlorophytes [Gayralia oxysperma (Kützing) K. L. Vinogradova ex Scagel et al., 1989 and Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, 1753], phaeophytes [Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh] and rhodophytes [Palisada flagellifera (J.Agardh) K. W. Nam, 2007]. A total of 3,861 mollusks were recorded, belonging to the classes Gastropoda (9 species; 3,800 individuals), Bivalvia (3 spp.; 54 ind.), and Polyplacophora (1 sp.; 7 ind.). Functional diversity was accessed through the trophic structure, in which we identified food guilds: suspension feeders, grazers, herbivores, and carnivores. The analysis revealed significant differences in mollusk abundance, species richness, diversity indices, and trophic diversity among barnacle belts, mussel beds, algae habitat, and bare rock habitats. The highest species richness and trophic diversity were detected in algae habitat and mussel beds, which showed low abundance. In contrast, barnacle belts registered low species richness and trophic diversity and a high number of individuals. Bare rock recorded low values in all surveyed indices. This result points to the effect of environmental modification caused by habitat-forming species in this system. These species increase environmental complexity and enable the establishment of organisms through facilitation processes. The various food guilds found in this study reaffirm the role of habitat-forming species in providing niches that support different occupation patterns.

ABSTRACT: Ophiothela mirabilis is native to the Pacific Ocean and has recently invaded the Caribbean and the southwestern Atlantic. In this study, using SCUBA diving techniques, we observed specimens of the invasive O. mirabilis in association with an octocoral host (Leptogorgia punicea) at the equatorial margin in the southwestern Atlantic (03°32′S, 38°47′W). We filled a gap of more than ~1,500 km between the Amazon reefs and the coast of Pernambuco State. The results indicate that O. mirabilis has invaded ~6,700 km of coastline in the southwestern Atlantic in the last 17 years. Moreover, our results support the hypothesis that the consistent color pattern of specimens from Brazil, French Guiana, Saint Vincent, and Tobago indicates the existence of a single lineage proliferating by asexual reproduction. Because the South Atlantic is the most recent of the oceans, as well as a hotspot for tropical biodiversity, much more information on invertebrate bioinvasions in this region is needed.

Abstract Paguroids are usually detritivorous organisms and the occurrence of predation on mollusks is very unusual. This contribution reports the occurrence of a predatory behavior of the paguroid Dardanus venosus (H. Milne Edwards, 1848) on the snail Aurantilaria aurantiaca (Lamarck, 1816). Single specimen of paguroid was found attacking the snail in a sea grass meadow dominated by Halodule wrightii Ascherson on the coast of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The paguroid and gastropod specimens were brought to the laboratory and placed in an aquarium and the behavior was recorded by photos. Paguroid behavior was characterized by sequencial movements of chelipeds in the attack to the snail when the snail was hold by paguroid ambulatory legs. External lip of shell aperture, operculum and foot of the gastropod were severely damaged.

A serapilheira representa fonte de alimentos para diversos organismos que podem contribuir diretamente para a decomposição de matéria orgânica. A presença física desses detritos vegetais pode modificar áreas do ambiente e promover a formação de microhabitats, servindo de refúgio para diversos animais contra predadores e dessecação. O gastrópode Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ellobiidae) é comum em florestas de mangue na costa do Atlântico e se alimenta de folhas de mangue caídas. Nesse trabalho foi assumida a hipótese de que a distribuição espacial do Melampus coffeus é diretamente afetada pela deposição de serapilheira no manguezal. Objetivou-se avaliar a distribuição espacial desses gastrópodes em relação à serapilheira de mangue durante doze meses de coletas. A área de estudo foi estabelecida no médio estuário do rio Pacoti, Estado do Ceará, Brasil onde foram determinadas duas zonas de diferentes perfis topográficos. Amostras de Melampus coffeus e de serapilheira foram coletadas mensalmente. Os resultados indicaram que a presença de galhos na superfície do solo do manguezal favorece a ocupação do ambiente por indivíduos dessa espécie de molusco de menor tamanho, provavelmente porque indivíduos menores são mais suscetíveis ao ataque de predadores e à dessecação e a presença de galhos pode formar microhabitats mais seguros.

Leaf litter represents a food source to many organisms that may directly contribute to organic matter decomposition. In addition, the physical presence of these vegetal detritus contributes for the modification of some environmental areas and produce microhabitats that may act as a refuge against predators and desiccation for many animals. The pulmonate gastropod Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ellobiidae) is a very common specie in Atlantic Coast mangrove forests and feeds on fallen mangrove leaves. It was hypothesized that the spatial distribution of Melampus coffeus is directly affected by mangrove leaf litter biomass deposition. Thus, this research aimed at evaluating the spatial distribution of these gastropods in relation to the biomass of mangrove leaf litter through a twelve-month period. The study area was established in the middle estuary of Pacoti River, state of Ceará, Brazil where two adjacent zones with different topographic profiles were determined. Samples of Melampus coffeus and leaf litter were collected monthly, throughout a year, from the mangrove ground surface. The results indicated that the presence of twigs in mangrove litter favor the occupation by smaller individuals of M. coffeus, probably because smaller individuals are more susceptible to predator attacks and desiccation than larger ones, and twigs and branches may provide a safe microhabitat.

Moluscos ocupam diferentes tipos de ambientes, incluindo a zona entremarés. O presente estudo buscou investigar a distribuição espacial de moluscos em recifes de arenito situados na zona entremarés da Praia Pacheco, no estado do Ceará, Brasil. Sobre dois transectos, foram coletadas mensalmente seis amostras de 0,25 m² em cada um, em intervalos de 30 m (0 m, 30 m, 60 m, 90 m, 120 m e 150 m) no período de agosto de 2006 a setembro de 2007. Os moluscos foram contabilizados em campo, e porções de sedimento e algas foram armazenadas para posterior triagem e análise em laboratório. Foram encontrados 74.515 indivíduos, classificados em 67 espécies, 52 gêneros e 39 famílias. Gastrópodes foram predominantes, correspondendo a 73,1% das espécies, seguidos por bivalves (22,4%) e chitons (4,5%). Caecum ryssotitum de Folin, 1867 foi o táxon mais abundante, representando 68,8% do número total de organismos. De um modo geral, a zona com maior predominância de espécies foi o Mesolitoral Médio (amostras 60 m e 90 m), sugerindo que o maior número de microambientes disponíveis nesta área pode contribuir para o estabelecimento e sobrevivência de moluscos.

Mollusks occupy different kinds of environments, including the intertidal zone. The present study investigated the spatial distribution of mollusks on beach rocks of the intertidal zone of Pacheco Beach in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Sampling occurred from August 2006 to September 2007. Across two transects, six samples of 0.25 m² were collected monthly in gaps of 30 m (0 m, 30 m, 60 m, 90 m, 120 m and 150 m). The mollusks were counted in field, and samples of sediment and algae were taken for further analysis. A total of 74,515 individuals were found and classified into 67 species, 52 genera and 39 families. Gastropods were predominant, corresponding to 73.1% of the species, followed by bivalves (22.4%) and chitons (4.5%). Caecum ryssotitum de Folin, 1867 was the most abundant taxon, representing 68.8% of total specimen findings. In general, species were mostly found in Middle Littoral zone (samples 60 m and 90 m), suggesting that the greater number of microenvironments available in this area may contribute to establishment and survival.

The size at sexual maturity and the allometric growth of the semi-terrestrial crab Sesarma rectum were studied in an impacted tropical mangrove in northeast Brazil. Crabs were monthly collected during spring low-tide periods, from October 2009 through September 2010. A catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) technique was used to sample the crab population, with two-hour sampling periods, by two people. A total of 492 crabs were obtained, being 262 males and 230 females. The specimens were measured at carapace width (CW), the left and right propodus length and height (RPL, RPH, LPL and LPH), and the gonopod length of males (GL), and abdomen width (AW) of females. In males, the inflection point was at 27.14 mm CW in the relationship between CW and the length of right propodus (LRP), considering the morphological size at the onset of maturity. Based on the relationship between CW and AW, the size at sexual maturity in females was 22.97 mm. In spite of living in an impacted area, this population attained the maturity onset at a bigger size than other localities.

La madurez sexual morfométrica y el crecimiento alométrico del cangrejo semiterrestre Sesarma rectum fueron estudiados en un manglar tropical modificado en el noreste de Brasil. Los cangrejos fueron colectados mensualmente durante los períodos de marea baja desde octubre 2009 a septiembre 2010. Para obtener una muestra representativa de la población se utilizó la técnica de captura por unidad de esfuerzo (CPUE), con períodos de dos horas de captura realizada por dos personas. Se obtuvo un total de 492 cangrejos: 262 machos y 230 hembras. Se realizaron mediciones del ancho del caparazón (AC), longitud y altura del propodio izquierdo y derecho, longitud del gonopodo de los machos (LPI, API, LPD, APD e LG), y ancho del abdomen (AW) de las hembras. En los machos, el punto de inflexión se determinó en 27,14 mm CW en la relación entre CW y la longitud del propodio derecho (LPD), considerado el tamaño morfológico al inicio de la madurez. Basado en la relación entre el CW y AW, el tamaño de madurez sexual de las hembras fue de 22,97 mm. A pesar de vivir en una zona afectada, esta población alcanza el inicio de la madurez sexual a un tamaño mayor que en otras localidades.

The study of biological invasions can be roughly divided into three parts: detection, monitoring, mitigation. Here, our objectives were to describe the marine fauna of the area of the port of São Sebastião (on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, in the São Sebastião Channel, SSC) to detect introduced species. Descriptions of the faunal community of the SSC with respect to native and allochthonous (invasive or potentially so) diversity are lacking for all invertebrate groups. Sampling was carried out by specialists within each taxonomic group, in December 2009, following the protocol of the Rapid Assessment Survey (RAS) in three areas with artificial structures as substrates. A total of 142 species were identified (61 native, 15 introduced, 62 cryptogenic, 4 not classified), of which 17 were Polychaeta (12, 1, 1, 3), 24 Ascidiacea (3, 6, 15, 0), 36 Bryozoa (17, 0, 18, 1), 27 Cmdana (2, 1, 24, 0), 20 Crustacea (11, 4, 5, 0), 2 Entoprocta (native), 16 Mollusca (13, 3, 0, 0). Twelve species are new occurrences for the SSC. Among the introduced taxa, two are new for coastal Brazil. Estimates of introduced taxa are conservative as the results of molecular studies suggest that some species previously considered cryptogenic are indeed introduced. We emphasize that the large number of cryptogenic species illustrates the need for a long-term monitoring program, especially in areas most susceptible to bioinvasion. We conclude that rapid assessment studies, even in relatively well-known regions, can be very useful for the detection of introduced species and we recommend that they be carried out on a larger scale in all ports with heavy ship traffic.

El estudio de invasiones biológicas puede ser dividido en tres partes: detección, supervisión y atenuación. El objetivo fue describir la fauna marina del puerto de São Sebastião (costa norte del estado de São Paulo, en el canal de São Sebastião, SSC) para detectar las especies introducidas. No existen descripciones de la comunidad faunística del SSC en relación a la diversidad nativa y alóctona (invasiva o potencialmente) de todos los grupos de invertebrados. El muestreo se efectuó por especialistas de cada grupo taxonómico en diciembre de 2009, siguiendo el protocolo de Estudio de Evaluación Rápida (EER) en tres zonas con sustratos artificiales. Se identificaron 142 especies (61 nativas, 15 introducidas, 62 criptogénicas y cuatro no determinadas), de las cuales 17 correspondieron a poliquetos (12, 1, 1, 3), 24 a ascidias (3, 6, 15, 0), 36 a briozoarios (17, 0, 18, 1), 27 a cnidarios (2, 1, 24, 0), 20 a crustáceos (11, 4, 5, 0), 2 a entoproctos (nativo) y 16 a moluscos (13, 3, 0, 0). Doce especies constituyen nuevos registros para el SSC. Entre los taxa introducidos, dos son nuevos para la costa de Brasil. Las estimaciones de los taxa introducidos son conservativas dado que los resultados obtenidos en estudios moleculares sugieren que algunas especies anteriormente consideradas criptogénicas son introducidas. Se destaca que el gran número de especies criptogénicas refleja la necesidad de un programa de monitoreo a largo plazo, especialmente en las zonas más susceptibles a la invasión biológica. Se concluye que los estudios de evaluación rápida, incluso en las regiones relativamente bien conocidas, pueden ser útiles para detectar especies introducidas y se recomienda expandir este tipo de estudios en todos los puertos con tráfico marítimo.

A competição por espaço é comum em organismos sésseis que vivem em substrato consolidado. Os corais apresentam muitas estratégias para competição por espaço, incluindo danos ao oponente ou inibição do crescimento. No presente estudo, as interações competitivas entre três espécies de zoantídeos foram investigadas em um ambiente de recifes de arenito no nordeste brasileiro. As habilidades competitivas dos zoantídeos foram analisadas por observações periódicas das margens de contato entre as colônias em ambiente natural e avaliação experimental da taxa de crescimento, através da remoção de uma área de 100 cm² de colônias de cada espécie. Palythoa caribaeorum e Zoanthus sociatus apresentaram taxa de crescimento similar, crescendo mais rápido que Protopalythoa variabilis. A estratégia de colonização parece ser diferente entre as espécies. As margens de contato entre P. caribaeorum e Z. sociatus permaneceram inalteradas ao longo do tempo, sem qualquer interação agressiva entre as colônias, sugerindo que a inibição do crescimento foi a estratégia utilizada. Palythoa caribaeorum e Z. sociatus cresceram entre os pólipos de P. variabilis, muitas vezes sufocando e matando suas colônias. A coexistência entre os zoantídeos revela uma capacidade de sobrevivência frente a recursos limitados, como substrato livre, o que levou ao sucesso na colonização e estabelecimento de zoantídeos em ambientes intertidais.

Sessile organisms that live in consolidated substrates frequently compete for space. Coral species have many strategies to face this competition, including harming their opponents or hindering their growth. In the present study, the competitive interactions between three species of zoanthids were investigated in the intertidal zone of a sandstone reef environment in northeastern Brazil. The competitive abilities of the three species were evaluated by periodic observation of the natural fringes of contact and experimental evaluation of their growth rate through removal of 100 cm² of colonies of each species. Palythoa caribaeorum and Zoanthus sociatus had similar growth rates, and both species grew faster than Protopalythoa variabilis. The recolonization strategy seems to differ among species. The contact fringes between P. caribaeorum and Z. sociatus remained unchanged over time, without any type of aggressive interaction between them, suggesting that stand-off was the strategy used by these organisms. Palythoa caribaeorum and Z. sociatus grew among the polyps of P. variabilis, often killing its colonies. The coexistence of zoanthids reveals a capacity for survival in the face of competition for limited resources such as free substrate, which led to the colonization and establishment of zoanthids in intertidal environments.

Turbinella laevigata é encontrada desde a zona entre marés até 40 m de profundidade, sendo endêmica do Brasil onde ocorre desde o Estado do Amapá até o Espírito Santo. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a ooteca de Turbinella laevigata. Quinze amostras foram coletadas na Praia de Olho d'Água, Município de Icapuí e na Praia de Flexeiras, Município do Trairí, ambos no Estado do Ceará, Nordeste do Brasil, foram estudadas. As desovas de T. laevigata foram compostas por 15 +/- 1.4 SD cápsulas e mediram 63 +/- 6.4 SD mm de comprimento e 41 +/- 2.5 SD mm de largura. Todas as cápsulas estavam fixadas pela membrana basal, a qual tinha a extremidade modificada para se prender ao substrato. Elas possuem uma superfície concava e outra convexa, apresentando margens pregueadas, que se prolongavam até a membrana basal, à qual se uniam formando uma prega. Esta espécie aparentemente produz uma grande quantidade de ovos nutritivos. A concha dos juvenis mediu 6.4 +/- 0.7 SD mm de comprimento e apresentou uma protoconcha com 3 voltas.

Turbinella laevigata is found since the intertidal zone up to 40 m depth, being endemic of Brazil where it occurs from the state of Amapá to the state of Espirito Santo. The objective of this study was to describe the ootheca of this species. Fifteen samples collected in the Olho d'Água Beach, City of Icapuí and Fleixeiras Beach, City of Trairí, both in Ceará State, Northeast Brazil, were studied. The spawns were composed by 15 +/- 1.4 SD capsules and had 63 +/- 6.4 SD mm of length with 41 +/- 2.5 SD mm of width. They had a convex and a concave surface, and plaited edges that drew out until the basal membrane, to which they joined forming a medial ridge. This species apparently produced a high amount of nurse eggs. The early juveniles measured 6.4 +/- 0.7 SD mm of length and they presented a protoconch with three whorls.

O imposex caracteriza-se pelo surgimento de estruturas sexuais masculinas, em fêmeas de gastrópodes. Cerca de 120 espécies de moluscos que exibem o fenômeno quando expostas a contaminação por compostos orgânicos de estanho tais como o Tributilestanho (TBT) e o Trifenilestanho (TPT). Esses compostos são utilizados, sobretudo em embarcações, no intuito de evitar a bioincrustração que danifica as embarcações e eleva os custos das viagens marítimas. No Brasil se conhecem 5 espécies de moluscos gastrópodes que manifestam imposex, são elas: Stramonita haemastoma, Stramonita rustica, Leucozonia nassa, Cymathium parthenopeum e Olivancillaria vesica. No Nordeste, monitoramentos da contaminação por organoestânicos foram realizados utilizando o imposex em gastrópodes como biomarcador. O presente estudo tem por objetivo notificar a primeira ocorrência de imposex na espécie endêmica do Nordeste brasileiro, Voluta ebraea. De um total de 11 animais observados, duas fêmeas apresentaram imposex, provenientes da Praia do Pacheco no litoral do Ceará. Observou-se nesses indivíduos a presença de glândula de cápsulas, ovidutos e receptáculo seminal concomitantemente ao pênis o que caracteriza o imposex. Como o imposex só se manifesta em moluscos expostos a compostos organoestânicos tipicamente encontrados em portos, marinas, estaleiros e locais com grande fluxo de embarcações atribui-se a origem dessa contaminação provavelmente a um estaleiro localizado nas proximidades da área de coleta.

Imposex is characterized by the development of masculine sexual organs in neogastropod females. Almost 120 mollusk species are known to present imposex when exposed to organic tin compounds as tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT). These compounds are used as biocide agents in antifouling paints to prevent the incrustations on boats. Five gastropod species are known to present imposex in Brazil: Stramonita haemastoma, Stramonita rustica, Leucozonia nassa, Cymathium parthenopeum and Olivancillaria vesica. This paper reports the first record of imposex observed in the endemic gastropod Voluta ebraea from Pacheco Beach, Northeast Brazil. Animals presenting imposex had regular female reproductive organs (capsule gland, oviduct and sperm-ingesting gland) and an abnormal penis. As imposex occurs in mollusks exposed to organotin compounds typically found at harbors, marinas, shipyards and areas with high shipping activities, probably contamination of Pacheco Beach is a consequence of a shipyard activity located in the nearest areas.

A maioria das cifomedusas e cubomedusas registradas para o litoral brasileiro é presumivelmente distribuída por toda a costa; porém poucos registros precisos estão disponíveis. Este estudo apresenta os primeiros registros publicados para o estado do Ceará (região Nordeste) da cubomedusa Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, e dos cifozoários: Chrysaora lactea, Linuche unguiculata (pólipo), Lychnorhiza lucerna, Nausithoe sp. (pólipo), Phyllorhiza punctata and Stomolophus meleagris. As espécies de medusas são conhecidas de longa data por pescadores locais e não-especialistas no grupo.

Most of the scyphozoans and cubozoans recorded for the Brazilian coast are presumed to be distributed over the entire coastline, but little information on precise records is available. This paper presents the first published records for the Ceará state (northeastern region) of the cubozoan Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, and the scyphozoans Chrysaora lactea, Linuche unguiculata (polyp), Lychnorhiza lucerna, Nausithoe sp. (polyp), Phyllorhiza punctata, and Stomolophus meleagris. The medusoid species have been known by local fishermen and non-specialists for a long time in the area.

A utilização de tintas antiincrustrantes contendo o composto biocida tributilestanho (TBT) tem induzido moluscos neogastrópodes ao imposex. O imposex é caracterizado pelo surgimento de caracteres sexuais masculinos, sobretudo, pênis e vaso deferente não funcionais em fêmeas desses moluscos. Foram coletadas amostras de Thais rústica em oito estações ao longo da costa da cidade de Natal no Rio Grande do Norte. Esses animais foram analisados quanto a presença e o grau de imposex que apresentavam. Os níveis mais elevados de imposex foram observados na estação mais próxima ao porto.

The use of antifouling paints containing the biocide compound tributyltin (TBT) has been shown as an inductor of imposex in neogastropods mollusks. Imposex is characterized by the development of male features in females, mainly the appearance of a no functional vas deferens and penis. Samples of Thais rustica were collected in eight sites in the metropolitan area of Natal city, Rio Grande do Norte state, northeast Brazil, and examined for occurrence of imposex, which was found in many females. The higher imposex levels were presented by samples from sites near city harbor.
