Abstract Diplopods are terrestrial arthropods important for the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. One of the reasons for that can be their low predation rate due to their defensive secretion. Thus, Orthoporus fuscipes, a species belonging to this group and endemic to northeastern Brazil, was investigated as to its population structure and chemical constituents of defensive secretion. The population structure showed that females are larger and have greater mass than do males, along with negative allometric growth between males and females. The defensive secretion hexane extract was submitted to fractionation using SiO2 open-column chromatography and the gas chromatographic coupled to mass spectrometric analysis was applied in the fraction possibilities to identify major fatty acid methyl esthers, along with minor alkanes, alkenes and fatty acids derivatives and the known quinoids 2-methoxy-3-methylhydroquinone, 2-methoxy-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,3-dimethoxyhydroquinone. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. RESUMO O jambu possui espilantol e compostos fenólicos responsáveis por muitas de suas propriedades medicinais. Além de melhorar a absorção de nutrientes, os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) podem alterar a produção de metabólitos secundários. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a influência da inoculação de FMA e doses de P na produção de biomassa seca da parte aérea, conteúdo dos macronutrientes (N, P, K, Ca e Mg), conteúdo de fenóis totais e concentração de espilantol em plantas de jambu. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 3x4, com dois FMA (Rhizophagus clarus e Claroideoglomus etunicatum) e sem FMA, em quatro doses de P (0, 30, 60 e 90 mg/kg de solo), com quatro repetições. Plantas inoculadas com R. clarus e C. etunicatum, cultivadas sem adubação fosfatada, apresentaram incremento de 23 e 12 vezes, respectivamente, na biomassa seca da parte aérea, em comparação com plantas sem FMAs. A concentração de espilantol nas plantas inoculadas com R. clarus, sem adubação fosfatada foi 2,4%. A produção da biomassa seca da parte aérea das plantas de jambu e também os conteúdos de P, K, Ca, e Mg são maiores quando inoculadas com R. clarus nas menores doses de P. Essa espécie de FMA, também aumenta os conteúdos de fenóis totais nas plantas, quando adubadas com 60 mg kg-1. A dose 60 mg kg-1 de P aumenta a concentração de espilantol nas plantas de jambu quando inoculadas com C. etunicatum.
ABSTRACT Jambu has spilanthol and phenolic compounds that are responsible for several medicinal properties. Besides improving nutrient absorption, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can change secondary metabolites’ yield. Thus, the aim of the current study was to evaluate AMF inoculation and P influence on shoot dry biomass yield, macronutrient content (N, P, K, Ca and Mg), total phenol contents and spilanthol percentage in jambu plants. The experiment followed a randomized block design at 3x4 factorial arrangement, with two AMF (Rhizophagus clarus and Claroideoglomus etunicatum) and without AMF, at four P doses (0, 30, 60 and 90 mg/kg of soil), with four replicates. Plants inoculated with R. clarus and C. etunicatum, grown without phosphate fertilization, presented increase by 23 and 12 times, respectively, in comparison to plants without AMF. The relative spilanthol area in plants inoculated with R. clarus, without phosphate fertilization, reached 2.4%. Shoot dry biomass yield of jambu plants and the P, K, Ca and Mg contents were higher when plants were inoculated with R. clarus at the lowest P doses. The AMF also increased the contents of total phenols in plants fertilized with 60 mg kg-1. This P dose increased spilanthol concentration in jambu plants inoculated with C. etunicatum.

ABSTRACT Catharanthus roseus (L) G. Don (Madagascar periwinkle) belongs to the Apocynaceace family and is widely spread throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The plant produces several important alkaloids, such as ajmalicine and serpentine, which are used in the treatment of circulatory diseases. The potential of inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and nitrogen fertilization to enhance the production of alkaloids was investigated in periwinkle. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and N fertilizer dosages on plant growth, production of ajmalicine, and nutrient content in roots. The concentration of ajmalicine was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme with four microbiological treatments (control - without mycorrhiza; Claroideoglomus etunicatum; Rhizophagus intraradices; mixed inoculum - Rhizophagus clarus + Gigaspora margarita), and four N fertilizer dosages (15, 30, 60, and 120 mg kg-1) with four replications. Catharanthus roseus growth was higher when plants were inoculated with mixed inoculum (R. intraradices + G. margarita) and C. etunicatum. The mixed inoculum (R. intraradices + G. margarita) and C. etunicatum, combined with N fertilization, enhanced ajmalicine yield. Catharanthus roseus inoculated with mycorrhiza showed increased P absorption and reduced N content.

Binding between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and a plumeran indole alkaloid (PIA) isolated from the stem bark of Aspidosperma cylindrocarpon (Apocynaceae) was studied by spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis absorption, circular dichroism, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence), combined with molecular docking. Steady state and time resolved fluorescence data revealed that PIA can quench the BSA fluorescence via a static mechanism: energy transfer from BSA to PIA occurs with high probability. The binding is strong (Kb ca. 105-106 L mol-1), spontaneous (ΔG° ca. -35.7 kJ mol-1 at 310 K) and entropy-driven (ΔS° = 0.146 kJ mol-1 K-1). There is just one main binding site (n ca. 1) for the BSA:PIA interaction and the α-helix content of the albumin does not suffer significant perturbation upon PIA binding. Molecular docking results suggest site I as the main binding site to PIA, which is able to interact with the Trp-212, Arg-217, Val-342 and Pro-446 residues.

Um novo alcalóide, denominado histrixnina (1), e cinco alcalóides indólicos conhecidos, ibogamina (2), olivacina (3) e affinina (4), affinisina (5) e Nb-metilaffinisina (6), foram isolados do extrato metanólico das cascas das raízes de Tabernaemontana hystrix. Os triterpenos conhecidos 3-O-acetil-alfa-amirina, 3-O-acetil-beta-amirina, 3-O-acetil-lupeol foram também identificados. As estruturas dos compostos foram elucidadas com base na análise de dados espectroscópicos.
A new alkaloid, named hystrixnine (1), and five known indole alkaloids, ibogamine (2), olivacine (3), affinine (4), affinisine (5) and Nb-methylaffinisine (6), were isolated from the root bark of Tabernaemontana hystrix. The known triterpenes alpha-amyrin acetate, beta-amyrin acetate and lupeol acetate were also identified. The structures of the compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic studies.

Os triterpenos conhecidos 3-O-acetil-alfa-amirina, 3-O-acetil-beta-amirina, 3-O-acetil-lupeol e 3-O-acetiltaraxasterol e os fitoesteróides beta-sitosterol e seu derivado 3-O-beta-D-glicopiranosídeo foram também identificados. A new natural quaternary alkaloid, Nb-methylvoachalotine (1), was obtained from the root bark of Tabernaemontana laeta together with three dimeric indole alkaloids, conodurine (2), voacamine (3) and tabernamine (4), and the monomeric indole alkaloids 19S-heyneanine (5), coronaridine (6) and voacangine (7). The known triterpenes alpha-amyrin acetate, beta-amyrin acetate, lupeol acetate and taraxasterol acetate and the phytosterol beta-sitosterol and its 3-O-beta-D-glucoside were also identified. The structures of the compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic studies.
