Abstract: Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had impact on people’s mental health. The family or caregiver of hospitalized patients are considered a vulnerable population, who do not usually receive the necessary mental health care, and due to the current confinement, they have to be apart from their relative interned for COVID-19, making their situation harder. Objective: To know the anxiety symptoms of the relatives of patients in hospital for such disease. Material and methods: Exploratory, descriptive and ambispective study on relatives of hospitalized patients for COVID-19 at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City, interviewed through the questionnaire GAD-7, from May 15 to September 30, 2020. A descriptive analysis was carried out and sociodemographic variables were collected for their correlation. Results: A sample of 234 family members was analyzed, with an average age of 42 years, the mean of anxiety symptoms was at seven, corresponding to a diagnosis of mild anxiety. Of them, 73.5% reported mild symptomatology and 26.5% moderate-severe. Women have more moderate-severe symptomatology compared to men (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Almost a third of the family members reported mild or severe anxiety symptoms. These results are very important because anxiety could influence the decisions they make about the treatment of their hospitalized patients for COVID-19. Developing strategies to give them psychological support could be the most important goal throughout the pandemic.

Resumen: Introducción: La pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 ha impactado en la salud mental de todo el mundo, especialmente de pacientes y sus parientes; estos últimos merecen especial atención. Debido al confinamiento actual, tienen que estar separados de la persona hospitalizada con diagnóstico de COVID-19, contribuyendo a un mayor estrés. Objetivo: Conocer los síntomas de ansiedad en los parientes de contagiados hospitalizados por COVID-19. Material y métodos: Estudio exploratorio en familiares responsables de enfermos internados por tal enfermedad en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias Ismael Cosío Villegas, Ciudad de México, entrevistados mediante el GAD-7, entre el 15 de mayo y 30 de septiembre del 2020. Resultados: Se analizó una muestra de 234 familiares, con una media de edad de 42 años, puntuación media de indicadores de ansiedad de siete (leve). Reportó sintomatología leve 73.5% y moderada-severa 26.5%. Proporcionalmente, las mujeres presentan más sintomatología moderada-severa en comparación con los hombres (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: La sintomatología de ansiedad moderada y severa corresponde a casi 30% de los parientes de internados con diagnóstico de COVID, éste es un dato importante pues podría interferir en su toma de decisiones o repercutir en su salud física. Estos datos permiten conocer su sentir y diseñar mejores estrategias de intervención para este grupo de pacientes.

Objective. To determine the relationship between the degree of addiction (DA) and pattern of tobacco consumption (PTC) with anxiety and depression in smokers who want to quit smoking. Material and Methods. At admission to a smoking cessation program 495 smokers were surveyed to determine anxiety (IDARE Test), depression (Beck Inventory Test), DA (Fagerström Test) and PTC (pack-years). Results. DA>= 6 points was associated with high anxiety levels RM=1.94, (IC95%1.02-3.72), p<0.04]; and with symptoms of severe depression; [RM=2.24, (IC95%1.00-4.99), p<0.04)]. The PCT equal or greater than 21 pack-year, was associated with moderate anxiety; [RM=3.19 (IC95%1.94-5.25), p<.00]; high anxiety; [RM=3.36 (IC95% 1.66-6-80), p<.00]; with moderate depressive symptoms; [RM=3.14, (IC95% 1.75-5-62), p<.00] and severe depressive symptoms; [RM=9.85, (IC95% 3.30-29.37), p<.00)]. Conclusion. A significant association exists in smokers having high GA and PCT, with moderate and high anxiety and depressive symptoms that should be considered during interventions to quit.

Objetivo. Determinar la asociación entre el grado de adicción (GA) y patrón de consumo de tabaco (PCT) con la ansiedad y depresión en fumadores que quieren dejar de fumar (FQDF). Material y métodos. En 495 sujetos que acudieron a un programa para dejar de fumar se determinó la ansiedad (inventario IDARE) y depresión (cuestionario BECK), el GA (cuestionario de Fagerström) y PCT (paquetes-año). Resultados. El GA>= a 6 puntos se asoció con niveles de ansiedad altos [RM=1.94, (IC95%1.02-3.72), p<0.04] y con síntomas de depresión graves [RM=2.24, (IC95%1.00-4.99), p<0.04)]. El PCT>= a 21 paquetes año, se asoció con ansiedad rasgo media; [RM=3.19 (IC95%1.94-5.25), p<.00]; ansiedad rasgo alta; [RM=3.36 (IC95% 1.66-6-80), p<.00]; con depresión moderada; [RM=3.14, (IC95% 1.75-5-62) p<.00] y depresión grave; [RM=9.85, (IC95% 3.30-29.37), p<.00)]. Conclusión. Existe una asociación significativa en fumadores con alto GA y PCT, con la presencia de ansiedad y síntomas de depresión moderada a grave que deben considerarse en FQDF.
