ABSTRACT Fruit morphology of the tribe Malveae has been discussed since the first taxonomic classifications of Malvaceae. The fruits are schizocarps, with some genera possessing an endoglossum. Besides morphological variation in the endoglossum, other differences include the number seeds per locule and ornamentation of the exocarp. An in-depth study of the fruit morphology of Malveae is essential to gain insight into the relationships among taxa of the tribe. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe the fruit morphology of Malveae, including micromorphology, variation in endoglossum structure and arrangement of seeds in the locule, to comprehensively evaluate the systematic relationships among its contained taxa. The results indicate morphological variation in fruit of various genera with regard to the number of mericarps, degree of dehiscence, relationship between calyx and fruit and their relative sizes, number and morphology of spines, number of seeds per locule, presence or absence of an endoglossum, presence and types of trichomes in exocarp and endocarp, and shape and presence of trichomes in the testa of seeds. Despite the morphological proximity of taxa, there are distinct combinations of characters that define some genera, and when one or more characters overlap, joint analysis makes it possible to clarify existing relationships.

ABSTRACT Dialypetalanthus is a monospecific genus that occurs in the Amazon Basin of Brazil, Bolivia and Peru and occupies a controversial position among the Rubiaceae. We continue this taxonomic discussion with the overall aim of clarifying the systematic position of D. fuscescens within the Rubiaceae. To accomplish this, we analyzed the ontogeny of its gynoecium, in particular the floral meristem, as well as the development of the carpels and cauline placentation. Gynosporogenesis and the differentiation of the carpellary septa and ovules were also described. Dialypetalanthus fuscescens was classified according to evolutionary diagrams found in the literature. The following characteristics were observed in D. fuscescens: 1) permanence of the floral meristem in the central basal part of the early flower bud; 2) dual origin of carpellary septum; 3) trizonate ovular primordia with only one fertile gynospore per ovule; and 4) cellular proliferation in the chalazal region. Embryological results confirm the classification of D. fuscescens in the subfamily Ixoroideae. These results are distinct from any others previously proposed in the evolutionary diagram. Therefore, we conclude that this study has presented evidence strongly suggesting that Dialypetalanthus possesses new morphological-type of ovule we refer to as the Dialypetalanthus-type.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Abstract Rodriguésia was influenced by transformations occurred in science throughout the last decade, in part due to the globalization process, the indexing through impact levels, and the crescent attention received by the biodiversity conservation. This article describes the evolution of Rodriguésia, based on papers published in there from 1935 to 2008. Publications were evaluated regarding its respective botanical area; language; the country and institutions of authors and co-authors; the amount and origin of citations received by Rodriguésia, and finally, its impact factor and h-index. The most studied botanical areas varied from taxonomy to floristic surveys and plant anatomy. Around 86% of the authors belonged to Brazilian scientific institutions. According to the ISI Web of Knowledge, Rodriguésia received 483 citations, with 83.7% of them from articles written in English against 10.6% written in Portuguese. The Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências and Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden are the periodicals that cited Rodriguésia the most. The estimated ISI-impact factor of Rodriguésia to 2008 was 0.152 and the h-index was 7. This paper discusses how the citation potential of papers on classical descriptive botanical areas could be improved on its respective quality and relevance, due to changes in the structure of the journal. We believe that with contextualization and discussion of results, such papers could attract more citations and enhance our knowledge on the plant diversity conservation.

The structural characteristics of the ovule formation are an important tool for the systematics of the Rubiaceae family. This paper describes the ovule ontogeny and ginosporogenesis (megasporogenesis) of Borreria verticillata (L.) G. Mey. in order to classify this species based on the evolutive diagrams proposed for the Rubiaceae family. The studied species presents an inferior, bicarpellate, bilocular ovary, with one ovule per loculus. The ovule is anatropous, unitegmic, and tenuinucellate, with axial placentation. The ovule primordia present three distinct layers of cells: dermal, subdermal and central. The integument, nucellar epidermis and ovule primordia originate respectively by divisions in the dermal, subdermal and central layers. The archesporium is constituted by one to five cells, while the nucellar epidermis has two to three cells. One to three ginospore mother cells, originated by divisions in archesporial cells, undergo meiotic divisions developing a linear tetrad. Only the chalazal ginospore remains and becomes functional. The remnant cells from the external integument, the inclusion of the nucellus in the chalaza, the occurrence of few elongated cells in the nucellar epidermis and the increased number of archesporial cells classify the ovule formation of B. verticillata in the Mitracarpus type.
