Abstract Background: Assessment of muscle strength is of great interest for the study of age-associated pathologies, including frailty and sarcopenia. However, the cost of some of the equipment necessary for its evaluation could be prohibitive for its generalized use in some settings. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare two handheld dynamometers to evaluate the measure of concordance between the measurements. Material and methods: The study was conducted in the outpatient geriatrics clinic where 120 community-dwelling participants aged 60 years, and more were evaluated using two devices: the Jamar® Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer and the digital hand dynamometer Camry® EH101. Results: We observed a positive correlation between the two devices for dominant hand (DH) Pearson r = 0.974 (p < 0.001) and a Spearman ρ 0.973 (p < 0.001) for non-dominant hand (NDH) Lin’s coefficient for the DH was 0.98 (p < 0.001) and for the NDH 0.97 (p <0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.971 (95% CI = 0.95-0.97, p < 0.001) for DH and 0.975 (95% CI = 0.96-0.98, p < 0.001) for NDH. Conclusions: In this study, the Camry dynamometer was observed to be reliable for measuring hand grip strength in community-dwelling people 60 years or older.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract The effect of peptide toxins on voltage-gated ion channels can be reliably assessed using electrophysiological assays, such as the patch-clamp technique. However, much of the toxinological research done in Central and South America aims at purifying and characterizing biochemical properties of the toxins of vegetal or animal origin, lacking electrophysiological approaches. This may happen due to technical and infrastructure limitations or because researchers are unfamiliar with the techniques and cellular models that can be used to gain information about the effect of a molecule on ion channels. Given the potential interest of many research groups in the highly biodiverse region of Central and South America, we reviewed the most relevant conceptual and methodological developments required to implement the evaluation of the effect of peptide toxins on mammalian voltage-gated ion channels using patch-clamp. For that, we searched MEDLINE/PubMed and SciELO databases with different combinations of these descriptors: “electrophysiology”, “patch-clamp techniques”, “Ca2+ channels”, “K+ channels”, “cnidarian venoms”, “cone snail venoms”, “scorpion venoms”, “spider venoms”, “snake venoms”, “cardiac myocytes”, “dorsal root ganglia”, and summarized the literature as a scoping review. First, we present the basics and recent advances in mammalian voltage-gated ion channel’s structure and function and update the most important animal sources of channel-modulating toxins (e.g. cnidarian and cone snails, scorpions, spiders, and snakes), highlighting the properties of toxins electrophysiologically characterized in Central and South America. Finally, we describe the local experience in implementing the patch-clamp technique using two models of excitable cells, as well as the participation in characterizing new modulators of ion channels derived from the venom of a local spider, a toxins’ source less studied with electrophysiological techniques. Fostering the implementation of electrophysiological methods in more laboratories in the region will strengthen our capabilities in many fields, such as toxinology, toxicology, pharmacology, natural products, biophysics, biomedicine, and bioengineering. voltagegated voltage gated assays patchclamp patch clamp However origin approaches patchclamp. clamp. ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Currently, approximately 144 new species of Brazilian beetles are described each year, and this average is projected to increase in the next decade to 180 species per year, or about one new Brazilian beetle every two days. 2000 ra Twentyfour Twenty four later CTFB Brasil 10 globe Costas s Brazil 35699 35 699 35,69 4958 4 958 4,95 11 country superfamilies planet 9 diversity 15 total 1,056 1056 1 056 (1,05 genera, , genera) 6,079 6079 6 079 (6,07 . species) Dejean 183 Curculionidae (Curculionidae speciesrich rich genus 57 1794 794 1,79 3 R M topten top ten st century Currently 14 year 18 days 200 3569 69 35,6 495 95 4,9 1,05 105 05 (1,0 6,07 607 07 (6,0 5 179 79 1,7 20 356 35, 49 4, 1,0 0 (1, 6,0 60 (6, 17 7 1, 2 (1 6, (6 (

Abstract Introduction: Sustained timber yield is the ability of the forest to maintain its production at a similar level through time. Objective: To propose a procedure to estimate a posteriori whether the long-term timber yield of a forest has been sustained by assessing the heights and diameters reached by same-aged trees but established in different years. Materials and methods: Diameters were gotten from stem analysis and heights were estimated by linear interpolation. Trees were grouped by size, and heights and diameters of same-aged trees established in different years were regressed versus the Year at which Trees Reached that Age (YTRA). All the trees were analyzed by multiple regression, regardless of the size groups; the regression model included the reciprocal of the tree age and the YTRA as explanatory variables for height and diameter. Results: Regression of heights and diameters versus YTRA at different ages (10, 20,…, 70) showed positive slopes, indicating that the more recently established trees had better growth and no evidence of deterioration of timber yield over time was found. The results on all the trees as a whole agreed with results for trees by size groups; these results coincided with what forest managers observed in situ. Conclusion: The procedure provides user-friendly tools to detect any negative changes that may jeopardize timber yield sustainability, identify possible causes, and implement corrective management practices.

Abstract Doing studies of biological tissues as the one of cervix with alternative techniques allows to direct to a medical diagnosis support of cervix cancer, the fourth more common in the world and the first cause of death in women between 30 and 59 years old in Colombia. In the cervix tissue there are found different fluorophores such as: NADH, flavine, elastin and collagen; molecules that generates fluorescence thanks to the capacity of absorb electromagnetic energy, this allows the emission of photons of less energy at a certain wavelength. In the initial steps of the dysplasia, the cells change their metabolic velocities, physical and structural characteristics; with that the spectral response of the molecules present in the cervical tissue is altered. In the research, an analysis of the fluorescence spectrum was made by using LED ultraviolet light in the range between 335 and 340 nm as source of electromagnetic radiation and was verified when interacting with the biological tissue of the cervix biopsies given by the Caldas Pathology Institute of the city of Manizales-Colombia, spectra with active responses are generated in the wavelength ranges of the fluorophores emission, showing the interaction and excitation of the same. Those spectra are similar to the ones obtained with the traditional optical fluorescence spectroscopy applied with a laser light source. The previous fact lets conclude that using LED technology of lower cost than the lasers used usually is viable as a light source for obtaining spectra of cervical tissue, continuing with the processing, and generating a classification based on its pathology.

Abstract: The human resource assignment usually considers the search, qualification, selection, and allocation of human resources commonly based on their experience and professional development into different areas of a company. Rarely, the residence location and other characteristics of the personnel are considered. This paper takes a real case allocation problem from a public university social service program in Mexico City where the assignment process is restarted every six months. The lack of consideration of the personnel physical and functional attributes, led to an inefficient allocation process, increasing desertion of the program. To solve this problem, we propose a new methodology built on hexagonal tessellation capable of allocating personnel based on distance, schedules, and skills, which is later improved using simulation, reducing total travel distance in 585 km, improving matching schedules in 26%, matching skills in 37% and reduced the time dedicated to the allocation process from 5 days to 90 minutes.

Abstract One of the new waters, and environmentally friendly agriculture initiatives in Peru is to encourage the utilization of agricultural waste, because low agricultural output is a threat to food security there. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of harvest residues on the basidiocarp production of the fungus Pleurotus Ostreatus, in Acobamba-Huancavelica. The trial had a completely randomized design, and the treatments included T1, barley stubbles; T2, wheat stubbles; T3, pea stubbles; T4, broad bean stubbles; and T5, quinoa stubbles. The research was quantitative in nature, taking the form of an experiment with an applied, explanatory level of design. The recorded data was tabulated and analyzed with analysis of variance, as well as Tukey's test (α:0.05), for which the statistical software Infostat was used. The results are presented in tables and graphs for a better interpretation. As main results, it was obtained that the time (colonization), diameter (stem, pileus), length (stem) and weight (basidiocarps), present statistical differences between treatments showing significant enhancement in all parameters. Despite a numerical difference, a Tukey average comparison test revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between the averages for the variable time for fungus colonisation, suggesting that the treatment T5 in which quinoa substrate showed the greatest average. Treatment T4 in which broad bean stubbles were used gave the most low-average. In conclusion, increment in all parámeters were noted in all treatment of Pleurotus basidiocarps ostreatus under Acobamba conditions. waters waste Ostreatus AcobambaHuancavelica.
Abstract Mexico has at least 179 species of the genus Quercus, which include some of the most important species for coppice forestry. Coppice forestry, the differentiated treatments and the use of wood based on its technological characteristics, could contribute to optimize the use of the goods and services provided by Quercus species. In this work we evaluated the anatomical characteristics and some physical properties of coppiced wood from Quercus laurina and Quercus obtusata, species used to obtain charcoal and firewood in the communities surrounding the Popocatepetl volcano in Puebla, Mexico. The anatomical characteristics reported in this study coincide with previous descriptions of the wood from monostem trees, except for the presence of helical thickenings in fibers and annular porosity observed in Quercus obtusata. Regarding physical properties, values lower than those previously reported by other authors were recorded. It is suggested to carry out silvicultural trials of coppicing method on Quercus species and to evaluate the technological characteristics of the resulting wood.

The objective of this work is to describe ontogenic development of Brycon moorei, an oviparous and potamodromous fish species, to contribute to a better understanding of the initial development of this species. Samples were obtained from parents kept in captivity. Woynarovich-type incubators were used for the embryos and cement ponds for the larvae, both with a constant supply of water at an average temperature of 27 ºC and food availability. The hours-post-fertilization (HPF) of ontogeny were recorded. The optic capsule was evident at 9 HPF, and the opening of the mouth and anus at 23 and 24 HPF, respectively. The duration of each phase during the embryonic period: cleavage (4 h), gastrulation (3 h), embryogenesis (7 h). The duration of each phase during the larval period: larval yolk (28 h), pre-flexion (61 h), flexion (80 h) and post-flexion (>170 h). In each period and phase, shape analysis was carried out using distance measurements. Larvae had a considerable increase in length with HPF. The total number of myomers was constant from the preflexion phase. Our results can be used to explain the general picture of early development of B. moorei under captivity conditions, as well as to develop better breeding methods for larvae production and to find diagnostic characters that can be used at the taxonomic level.

Abstract Marjolin’s ulcer is defined as a neoplasm developed within a wound that has been chronically traumatized. We present a case of a chronic venous ulcer with malignant degeneration and a brief review of the literature. A 50-year-old female patient with chronic venous disease diagnosed at the age of 20 years old and treated with pharmacological ablation of the bilateral great saphenous veins. Twenty years later, she developed a varicose ulcer on the medial aspect of her right leg, presenting recurrence despite 10 years of treatment. This lesion increased in size and presented bleeding, therefore we decided to perform biopsies. The histopathological analysis revealed malignant neoplastic degeneration with extension to deep planes and inguinal adenopathies. Supracondylar amputation of the right pelvic limb with inguinal lymphadenectomy was performed. In conclusion, a Marjolin’s ulcer secondary to a varicose ulcer may have higher morbidity due to its location, since it predominates in the extremities and it is generally identified in advanced stages, leading to gloomy outcomes.

ABSTRACT Azotobacter vinelandii is a Gram negative that undergo a morphological and physiological differentiation process to form cysts resistant to desiccation. The main components of a cyst are alkylresorcinols (ARs), phenolic lipids of 21 to 23 C. These lipids are homologous to plant ARs, where they have been reported to have antifungal properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal capacities of vegetative cells and cysts of A. vinelandii AEIV. The cysts were visualized by optical microscope and the detection of ARs was performed by thin layer chromatography. Antagonism bioassay were carried out between vegetative cells and cysts against Fusarium brachygibbosum, Aspergillus niger and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. We confirmed the induction of cysts and the presence of ARs of A. vinelandii AEIV. We observed that using 1×103 cysts reduced up to 76.3% (p < 0.05) the growth of the three phytopathogenic fungi and this result was not observed when using vegetative cells or the strain blocked in the synthesis of ARs. This shows that the cysts exert an antagonistic effect on phytopathogenic fungi and do so through the ARs, considering the development of an effective strategy to control pests in fungi that affect postharvest fruits.
