ABSTRACT Introduction Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy (RPLND) is well established as a primary treatment, especially for high-risk stage I and stage IIA/B nonseminomatous tumors, but its value in seminomatous tumors is underreported (1). Classically, seminomas with isolated retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy are treated with external beam radiation therapy or systemic chemotherapy. Although these modalities are effective, they are associated with significant long-term morbidity (2, 3). Some retrospective studies have demonstrated the potential of RPLND as a first-line treatment for stage IIa seminoma, and two very recent prospective trials, still with interim results: SEMS TRIAL and PRIMETEST(3-7). The RPLND robotic technique has been previously described in the post-chemotherapy scenario, however, surgical videos of primary laparoscopic approach are lacking, especially in seminomatous disease (8). Materials and Methods We present two cases of primary videolaparoscopic RPLND, using different approaches.Case 1: Thirty four years-old, with prior right orchiectomy for mixed tumor. After 8 months he presented an two cm enlarged interaortocaval lymph node. Percutaneous biopsy showed pure seminoma metastasis.Case 2: Thirty three years-old, with previous left orchiectomy for stage I pure seminoma, without risk factors. After nine months, the patient had a three cm enlarged para-aortic lymph node. Results The surgical time ranged from 150 to 210 minutes, with a maximum bleeding of 300 mL and hospital discharge in 48 hours. In one of the cases, we identified a significant desmoplastic reaction, with firm adhesions to the great vessels, requiring vascular sutures, however, no major complication occurred. Pathological anatomy confirmed pure seminoma lymph node metastases in both cases. Conclusion Laparoscopic primary RPLND proved to be technically feasible, with less postoperative pain and early hospital discharge. We understand that more studies should be performed to confirm our oncological results.

ABSTRACT Objectives Report the long-term outcomes of the AMS 800 artificial sphincer (AS) for the treatment post-prostatectomy incontinence (PPI) in a single center in Brazil. Materials and Methods Clinical data from patients who underwent the procedure were retrieved from the medical records of individuals with more than 1 year of follow-up from May 2001 to January 2016. Continence status (number of pads that was used), complications (erosion or extrusion, urethral atrophy, and infection), malfunctions, and need for secondary implantation were evaluated. The relationship between complications and prior or subsequent radiation therapy (RT) was also examined. Results From May 2001 to January 2016, 121 consecutive patients underwent AS implantation for PPI at an oncological referral center in Brazil. At the last visit, the AS remained implanted in 106 patients (87.6%), who reported adequate continence status (maximum of 1 pad/day). Eight-two subjects (67.8%) claimed not to be using pads on a regular basis at the final visit (completely dry). Revision occurred in 24 patients (19.8%). Radiation therapy (RT) for prostate cancer following radical prostatectomy was used in 47 patients before or after AS placement. Twelve patients with a history of RT had urethral erosion compared with 3 men without RT (p=0.004). Conclusion Considering our outcomes, we conclude that AS implantation yields satisfactory results for the treatment of PPI and should remain the standard procedure for these patients. Radiation therapy is a risk factor for complication.

Objetivou-se avaliar progênies de tomateiro de porte determinado da coleção biológica do Instituto Agronômico quanto à reação a Tomato yellow vein streak virus (ToYVSV) e selecionar plantas resistentes. A pesquisa foi conduzida em ambiente protegido, de 08/2008 a 02/2009. O isolado utilizado foi coletado em lavoura comercial de tomate de mesa, em Sumaré-SP. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, com 25 tratamentos, quatro repetições e 30 plantas por parcela. A transmissão do vírus foi feita em gaiolas contendo moscas-brancas virulíferas (Bemisia tabaci biótipo B). A reação das plantas ao patógeno foi avaliada pela porcentagem de plantas sem sintomas, aos 40, 50, 57 e 64 dias após o transplantio. Para a detecção do vírus em cada genótipo utilizou-se reação de PCR. Em todos os genótipos avaliados foram observadas plantas com e sem sintomas do ToYVSV. Entre esses genótipos, destacaram-se IAC-TG 17 e o acesso LA 462 (Solanum peruvianum) com as maiores porcentagens de plantas sem sintomas nas quatro épocas de avaliação. Considerando os genótipos utilizados e as condições edafoclimáticas de desenvolvimento da pesquisa, IAC-TG 17 e LA 462 podem ser utilizados como fontes de resistência ao ToYVSV.

The study aimed to assess the reaction to Tomato yellow vein streak virus (ToYVSV) of determinate-growth tomato breeding lines of the Instituto Agronomico de Campinas (Campinas Agronomic Institute) germplasm collection and to select resistant plants. The experiment was carried out from August 2008 to February 2009 in greenhouse conditions. The geminivirus isolate used was collected in a tomato commercial field, in Sumaré, São Paulo State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely ramdomized blocks, with 25 treatments, four replications, and 30-plant plots. Virus transmission was carried out in cages containing viruliferous whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci B biotype). Plant reaction to the pathogen was evaluated by means of the percentage of symptomless plants 40, 50, 57 and 64 days after transplanting. Virus detection in each genotype was carried out using PCR. Although all genotypes showed plants with and without ToYVSV symptoms, lines IAC-TG 17 and LA 462 (Solanum peruvianum) stood out due to the highest percentage of symptomless plants in the four evaluation dates. Therefore, considering the genotypes evaluated and the edaphoclimatic conditions in which this work was carried out, lines IAC-TG 17 and LA 462 can be used as sources of resistance to ToYVSV.

The cotton plant, Gossypium hirsutum, hosts various pests that damage different structures. Among these pests, Spodoptera cosmioides (Walker) and Spodoptera eridania (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are considered important. The objectives of this study were to characterize and to quantify the potential damage of S. eridania and S. cosmioides feeding on different structures of cotton plants. For this purpose, newly-hatched larvae were reared on the following plant parts: leaf and flower bud; leaf and boll; flower bud or boll; and leaf, flower bud and boll. The survival of S. cosmioides and S. eridania was greater than 80% and 70% for larvae fed on cotton plant parts offered separately or together, respectively. One larva of S. eridania damaged 1.7 flower buds, but did not damage bolls, while one larva of S. cosmioides damaged 5.2 flower buds and 3.0 cotton bolls. Spodoptera eridania and S. cosmioides can be considered species with potential to cause economic damage to cotton plants because they can occur throughout cotton developmental stages causing defoliation and losses of reproductive structures. Therefore, the results validate field observations that these two species of Spodoptera are potential pests for cotton.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the sensitivity and specificity of multislice computed tomography (CT) for diagnosis of orbital fractures following different protocols, using an independent workstation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT images of 36 patients with maxillofacial fractures (symptomatic to orbit region) who were submitted to multislice CT scanning were analyzed, retrospectively. The images were interpreted based on 5 protocols, using an independent workstation: 1) axial (original images); 2) multiplanar reconstruction (MPR); 3) 3D images; 4) association of axial/MPR/3D images and 5) coronal images. The evaluated anatomical sites were divided according to the orbital walls: lateral (with or without zygomatic frontal process fracture); medial; superior (roof) and inferior (anterior, medial). The collected data were analyzed statistically using a validity test (Youden's J index; p<0.05). The clinical and/or surgical findings (medical records) were considered as the gold standard to corroborate the diagnosis of the anatomical localization of the orbital fracture. RESULTS: 3D-CT scanning presented sensitivity of 78.9%, which was not superior to that of MPR (84.0%), axial/MPR/3D (90.5%) and coronal images (86.1%). On the other hand, the diagnostic value of axial images was considered limited for orbital fractures region, with sensitivity of 44.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Except for the axial images, which presented a low sensitivity, all methods evaluated in this study showed high specificity and sensitivity for the diagnosis of orbital fractures according to the proposed methodology. This protocol can add valuable information to the diagnosis of fractures using the association of axial/MPR/3D with multislice CT.
