Species from Pavonia genus (Malvaceae) are traditionally used as antioxidant, n anti inflammatory and antimicrobial remedies. Previous studies have revealed their diversity of specialized metabolites widely used in the development of new medicines. This is the first study on Pavonia glazioviana Gurke, a Brazilian species known as “Malva da Chapada”. The research led to identify fifteen compounds: 132 (S) hydroxy pheophytin a; and 132(S) hydroxy 173 ethoxyphaeophorbide, n decanol, cycloart 23Z ene 3β,25 diol, cycloart 24S 25 ene 3β,24 diol, sitosterol 3 O β D glucopyranoside, stigmasterol 3 O β D glucopyranoside, quercetin, acacetin, kaempferol, tiliroside, 5 hydroxy 3,7,8,4’ tetramethoxyflavone, 5,7 dihydroxy 3,8,4’ trimethoxyflavone, 5,7 dihydroxy 4’ methoxyflavone, 5,7,4’ trihydroxy 3,8 dimethoxyflavone and 5,7,4’ trihydroxy 3 methoxyflavone. The major flavonoids were tested for their antimicrobial activity, and the compound 5,7 dihydroxy 3,8,4’ trimethoxyflavone showed strong activity against Escherichia coli (MIC = 512 μg mL1), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 512 μg mL1), Candida albicans (MIC = 512 μg mL1), Candida tropicalis (MIC = 512 μg mL1), Candida parapsilosis (MIC = 512 μg mL1), Aspergillus flavus (MIC = 512 μg mL1) and A. fumigantus (MIC = 512 μg mL1). The total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and radical scavenging potential were determined showing its great production of phenolics and flavonoids, along with interesting radical scavenging potential (DPPH EC50 = 6.36 ± 0.029 mg mL 1). Our findings contributed to characterize P. glazioviana as a source of methoxylated flavonoids with antimicrobial potential. Malvaceae (Malvaceae antioxidant remedies medicines Gurke Malva Chapada. Abstract The disease coronavirus COVID-19 has been the cause of millions of deaths worldwide. Among the proteins of SARS-CoV-2, non-structural protein 12 (NSP12) plays a key role during COVID infection and is part of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. The monitoring of NSP12 polymorphisms is extremely important for the design of new antiviral drugs and monitoring of viral evolution. This study analyzed the NSP12 mutations detected in circulating SARS-CoV-2 during the years 2020 to 2022 in the population of the city of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The most frequent mutations found were P323L and G671S. Reports in the literature indicate that these mutations are related to transmissibility efficiency, which may have contributed to the extremely high numbers of cases in this location. In addition, two mutations described here (E796D and R914K) are close and have RMSD that is similar to the mutations M794V and N911K, which have been described in the literature as influential on the performance of the NSP12 enzyme. These data demonstrate the need to monitor the emergence of new mutations in NSP12 in order to better understand their consequences for the treatments currently used and in the design of new drugs. Abstract This review summarizes the state of knowledge on athecate dinoflagellates occurring within the South Atlantic Ocean and Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. We compiled data from 105 articles and selected 33 addressing any aspect of athecate dinoflagellate studies. Our aim is to discuss the patterns in athecate dinoflagellate distribution by building a thorough species list and an occurrence map based on species recorded in coastal and oceanic waters. We found 69 species totaling 141 occurrences in the entire South Atlantic Ocean basin. Contradicting global trends, most species distributed throughout this region are subtropical. We linked this trend to a higher local effort in dinoflagellate research instead of higher biodiversity, especially when compared to usual hotspots in biodiversity attributed to tropical oceans. The Subantarctic and Antarctic regions had a low number of occurrences, with 12 and 5, respectively. Except for the occurrence of Gyrodinium lachryma in the Antarctic Zone, all records are unique, poorly described and never recorded again for species such as Gymnodinium baccatum and Gymnodinium antarcticum. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Abstract Currently, it is crucial for the lubricant formulation industry to explore cost-effective and environmentally friendly methodologies for analyzing the tribological properties of engine aviation lubricants under high-temperature and high-pressure operating conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of employing molecular dynamic simulations to gain essential insights into the evolution of the tribological properties of lubricants during operation. A three-layer molecular model was devised, comprising nickel aluminide molecules in the top and bottom layers, and polyol ester in the core. The impact of sliding velocities ranging from 20 km/h to 100 km/h was investigated under varying temperature and pressure conditions. Concentration, temperature and velocity profiles, radial distribution function, mean square displacement, and friction coefficient were calculated and analyzed in detail. Notably, the highest friction coefficients – ranging from 2.5 to 0.75 - were observed at the lowest temperature and pressure conditions tested. Conversely, other sections of the gas turbine exhibited substantially lower friction coefficients – ranging from 0 to 0.01.Simulations demonstrate that increasing pressure and temperature reduce polymer chain mobility, leading to stronger internal interactions within the lubricant. Consequently, lubricant adsorption onto metal surfaces decreases. Furthermore, the lubricant performs exceptionally well when its molecules encounter higher velocities and temperatures. Based on the results obtained, the research demonstrates that the presented technique provides both quantitative and qualitative tribological information essential for understanding a system molecular behavior, serving as a guiding framework for researchers in the field. Abstract Nutritional insults early in life, such as during the suckling phase, are associated with phenotypic alterations and promote adverse permanent effects that impair the capacity to maintain energy balance in adulthood. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of a low-protein (LP) diet during lactation on the metabolism and antioxidant systems of adult female rat offspring. Dams were fed a low-protein diet (4% protein) during the first two weeks of lactation or a normal-protein (NP) diet (20% protein) during the entire lactation period. The female offspring received a standard diet throughout the experiment. At 90 days of age, female LP offspring exhibited decreased body weight, feeding efficiency, and fat pad stores. The adult LP female offspring displayed brown adipose tissue hyperplasia without alterations in glucose homeostasis. The LP diet decreased liver triglyceride content and improved the antioxidant system compared to the NP group. The LP diet during the suckling phase promotes a lean phenotype and improves the hepatocyte antioxidant system in adult female offspring. ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. ABSTRACT The fungus that causes Asian soybean rust, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, shows crossed and multiple resistance to the three chemical groups of site-specific fungicides (triazoles, strobilurins and carboxamides). This fact evidences the need to implement strategies for the preventive management of resistance. An alternative can be the use of microorganisms capable of interfering in the development of pathogens, as well as of acting as resistance inducers in the plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a biological product based on Bacillus subtilis BV02, alone or in association with a copper-based product, on Asian soybean rust control, as well as the agronomic performance of soybean. Thus, two experiments were developed, one in the field and another one in the laboratory. For the experiment conducted in the field, a randomized block design was used with (5x2)+1 factorial arrangement of treatments, including four replicates. The first factor corresponded to application, during post-emergence of soybeans, of five B. subtilis BV02 doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 L c.p. ha-1). The second factor corresponded to association or not with a copper-based product. The additional treatment consisted of applying the fungicide association [azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr] + mancozeb. In the laboratory experiment, germination of Phakopsora pachyrhizi uredospores in Elisa plates was evaluated in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. Treatments were the same as those adopted in the field experiment, except for the chemical fungicide, since mancozeb was not added to the sprayed broth. Increasing doses of B. subtilis BV02, applied alone, provided reductions in Asian soybean rust severity, and this behavior was not observed when it was applied in association with the copper-based product. Considering the association between B. subtilis BV02 and the copper-based product, the best Asian rust control results were found with doses equal or inferior to 1.0 L c.p. ha-1. RESUMO O fungo causador da ferrugem asiática na soja, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, apresenta resistência cruzada e múltipla aos três grupos químicos (triazóis, estrobilurinas e carboxamidas) de fungicidas sítio-específicos. Este fato torna evidente a necessidade da implementação de estratégias para o manejo de prevenção da resistência. Uma alternativa pode ser a utilização de microrganismos com capacidade de interferir no desenvolvimento de patógenos, bem como atuarem como indutores da resistência das plantas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de produto biológico à base de Bacillus subtilis BV02 isolado ou associado à produto à base de cobre no controle de ferrugem asiática, bem como desempenho agronômico da soja. Para tanto, foram instalados dois experimentos, sendo um no campo e outro em laboratório. Para o experimento conduzido em campo, o delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, estando os tratamentos dispostos em arranjo fatorial (5x2)+1, com quatro repetições. O primeiro fator correspondeu a aplicação, em pós-emergência da soja, de cinco doses de B. subtilis BV02 (0, 0,5, 1,0, 2,0 ou 4,0 L p.c. ha-1). O segundo fator correspondeu a associação ou não com produto à base de cobre. O tratamento adicional consistiu na aplicação da associação entre os fungicidas [azoxystrobina + benzovindiflupir] + mancozebe. No experimento em laboratório foi avaliada a germinação dos uredósporos de P. pachyrhizi em placas Elisa, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com oito repetições. Foram utilizados os mesmos tratamentos do experimento do campo, diferenciando-se apenas o fungicida químico, o qual não foi adicionado mancozebe a calda aplicada. O aumento de dose de B. subtilis BV02, aplicado isoladamente, proporcionou reduções na severidade de ferrugem, não sendo visualizado este comportamento quando associado ao produto à base de cobre. Para a associação entre B. subtilis BV02 e produto à base de cobre, os melhores resultados para o controle de ferrugem asiática foram visualizados em doses iguais ou inferiores a 1,0 L p.c. ha-1. ABSTRACT The no-tillage system is a conservation system that helps sustainability and agricultural production. The effectiveness of glyphosate control, applied alone or in combination with other herbicides, can be altered depending on the product’s formulation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of glyphosate in formulations containing different salts and concentrations, applied alone and in combination with other herbicides, in controlling weeds in advanced stages in the pre-sowing burndown operation. The experiment was carried out in the field in an area with a history of high weed infestation. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, evaluating eleven treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of the application of three glyphosate-based formulations alone and in combination with clethodim and 2,4-D amine herbicides, in addition to a control without herbicide application. The evaluated variables were percentage of weed control and percentage of desiccation. A comparison of means by contrasts was performed to analyze the percentage of weed control. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de glyphosate em formulações contendo diferentes sais e concentrações, aplicado isolado e em associações a outros herbicidas, no controle de plantas daninhas em estádios avançados na operação de dessecação pré-semeadura. O experimento foi realizado a campo em área com histórico de elevada infestação de plantas daninhas. O experimento foi conduzido no delineamento de blocos casualizados, avaliando-se onze tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos pela aplicação de três formulações à base de glyphosate isolado e em associações com os herbicidas clethodim e 2,4-D amina, além de uma testemunha sem aplicação. As variáveis avaliadas foram porcentagem de controle das plantas daninhas e porcentagem de dessecação. Foi realizado uma comparação de médias por contrastes para analisar a porcentagem de controle de plantas daninhas. The NixCu(1-x)Fe2O4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.8, 1) mixed nickel and copper ferrites were synthesized using the EDTA-Citrate complexation method and calcined at 700°C. The structure, properties and characterization of the samples were analyzed by DRX, Rietveld refinement, SEM, and DRE UV-Vis, indicating the phase formation of tetragonal (CuFe2O4 and Ni0.2Cu0.8Fe2O4) and cubic (Ni0.8Cu0.2Fe2O4 and NiFe2O4). The materials exhibited morphologies suitable for photocatalytic applications and a UV-Vis absorption range near 2 eV as expected for spinel ferrites. These materials were evaluated as photocatalysts for the degradation of Rhodamine B dye under heterogeneous photocatalysis conditions, simulating solar light irradiation, air injection, and different pH levels (2, 6, and 10). The results showed that the catalytic efficiency was higher for samples with a higher copper content and in a basic medium. Therefore, NixCu(1-x)Fe2O4 mixed ferrites have promising potential as photocatalysts. Abstract The continental margin off the southeastern Brazilian coast is punctuated by a series of geological-geomorphological features, such as subsurface saline diapirs and pockmarks at the seafloor interface, which evidence the abundant presence of oil and gas in the region. In several of these sites, hydrocarbons can be naturally released into the water column, areas are cold seep areas. These are marked by the presence of oil- and gas-dependent ecosystems, where specific organisms are able to fix carbon from hydrocarbon chemosynthesis. In addition, light hydrocarbon fluid flow through the sediment may build up authigenic carbonates that can be further colonized by cold-water corals, generating large carbonate mounds over geological time, normally positioned at the border of these pockmark features. The present work reports on a multidisciplinary oceanographic cruise carried out in the Santos Basin, SW Atlantic, to seek, map, and collect geological, chemical, and biological data from different deep-sea habitats. The cruise occurred in November 2019 on the R/V Alpha Crucis of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP). We intended to discover and detail different geomorphological features, characterize free-living and symbiotic microorganisms, determine the chemosynthetic rates in relation to heterotrophic microbial production, and characterize the fauna and study their ecological and evolutionary links within and across ocean basins. All discoveries made during the cruise and their respective results will be presented separately in several papers that comprise this special volume.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar mudanças na resposta imunológica (diminuição de citocinas pró-inflamatórias no sangue) e na microbiota fecal (principalmente Bacteroidetes e Firmicutes) após a administração de probióticos em crianças com doença celíaca que seguiam uma dieta livre de glúten. Fontes de dados: Foram utilizadas para esta revisão as bases de dados Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Springer e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), com os descritores “celiac disease AND probiotics”. No fim da busca, foram recuperados 168 artigos, dos quais quatro foram incluídos na síntese qualitativa final. Os critérios de inclusão foram ensaios clínicos randomizados e população pediátrica (1–19 anos) e os critérios de exclusão, intervenções que não fossem com probióticos, estudos com pacientes portadores de outras doenças associadas à doença celíaca, ou que não preenchessem critérios para o diagnóstico. Todos os estudos eleitos foram publicados até setembro de 2020, sem restrição de idioma, com pacientes recebendo cepas de Bifidobacterium breve ou B. longum e em uma dieta livre de glúten. Síntese dos dados: Os estudos demonstram que a administração de probióticos associada a uma dieta livre de glúten pode aproximar a microbiota fecal desses pacientes às condições típicas de um indivíduo saudável ao restaurar a abundância de algumas comunidades microbianas que caracterizam uma condição tipicamente fisiológica. Além disso, a administração de probióticos pode reduzir as citocinas pró-inflamatórias (principalmente TNF-alfa). Conclusões: Apesar da correlação positiva entre probióticos e microbiota fecal/marcadores sorológicos nos pacientes pediátricos portadores de doença celíaca, ressalta-se a necessidade de estudos multicêntricos futuros que abranjam um maior número de pacientes e maior tempo de acompanhamento.%
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate changes in peripheral immunological response (decrease in blood proinflammatory cytokines) and fecal microbiota (especially Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes) after administration of probiotics in children with celiac disease on a gluten-free diet. Data source: The databases MEDLINE, LILACS, Springer and SciELO were used for this review, with the descriptors “celiac disease AND probiotics”. At the end of the search, 168 articles were retrieved, four of which were included in the final qualitative synthesis, having as inclusion criteria randomized clinical trials and pediatric population (1–19 years) and, as exclusion criteria, interventions other than probiotics, studies with patients with other diseases associated with celiac disease, or patients who did not meet the diagnostic criteria. All elected studies were published until September 2020, without language restriction, with patients receiving strains of Bifidobacterium breve or B. longum and on a gluten-free diet. Data synthesis: The studies show that the administration of probiotics along with a gluten-free diet, can approximate the fecal microbiota of celiac patients to typical conditions of healthy individuals, by restoring the abundance of some microbial communities that characterize the typical physiological condition. In addition, the administration of probiotics can reduce serum proinflammatory cytokines (mainly TNF-alpha). Conclusions: Despite the positive correlation between probiotics and fecal microbiota/serological markers in pediatric patients with celiac disease, we emphasize the need for future multicentric studies that should include a larger number of patients and a longer follow up period.%

Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Abstract Background Areas simultaneously infested with both glyphosate-resistant sourgrass (Digitaria insularis L.) and fleabane (Conyza spp.) are usual in Brazil. However, there are no effective management strategies to control both species concurrently. Objective The aim was to evaluate the interaction and interval of application of haloxyfop-P-methyl and cloransulam-methyl to effective control sourgrass (from 3- to 4-tillers to flowering stages) and fleabane (12- to 15-cm at the vegetative stage). Methods The experiment was conducted twice in a randomized complete blocks design with four biological replicates. The treatments were composed of sequential applications of haloxyfop-P-methyl (firstly applied) and cloransulam-methyl (secondly applied) and vice-versa. After the first application, the second one was applied in intervals of 3, 6 and 12 days. Haloxyfop-P-methyl and cloransulam-methyl were also applied in sequential (without interval), stand-alone applications of both herbicides and an untreated check. Results All treatments effectively controlled all fleabane plants. Haloxyfop-P-methyl applied ≥ 6 days before cloransulam-methyl controlled 100% of 3- to 4-tillers sourgrass and 60% of flowering sourgrass. Conclusions Therefore, haloxyfop-P-methyl may be applied ≥ 6 days before cloransulam-methyl in a sequential application structure to effectively control fleabane and sourgrass (3- to 4-tillers stage), when present concurrently.

Abstract For human/SARS-CoV-2 interactome genes ACE2, TMPRSS2 and BSG, there is a convincing evidence of association in Asians with influenza-induced SARS for TMPRSS2-rs2070788, tag-SNP of the eQTL rs383510. This case illustrates the importance of population genetics and of sequencing data in the design of genetic association studies in different human populations: the high linkage disequilibrium (LD) between rs2070788 and rs383510 is Asian-specific. Leveraging on a combination of genotyping and sequencing data for Native Americans (neglected in genetic studies), we show that while their frequencies of the Asian tag-SNP rs2070788 is, surprisingly, the highest worldwide, it is not in LD with the eQTL rs383510, that therefore, should be directly genotyped in genetic association studies of SARS in populations with Native American ancestry.
