Abstract Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) is a rapid method for the determination of protecting the ability of thin film coatings in addition to oxidation kinetics. Boron carbide (B4C) reinforced Ti-6Al-4V thin films were deposited through the magnetron sputtering coating technique. The effect of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 Wt. % of B4C adding on microstructure, thermal behaviour and hardness of Ti-6Al-4V-B4C coatings were investigated. Thermal analysis of Ti-6Al-4V-B4C coatings with varying percentage of B4C resulted in the establishment of an exothermic peak, for the reason that reduction in the oxidation of coating. The thermal behaviour of coating was improved by B4C addition; those coatings are recommended for practical application. It was proven that the addition of B4C not only alters the thermal stability but also transforms the mechanism of oxidation. It was absolutely unconcealed that the Ti-6Al-4V-B4C film oxidization may be a multi-staged procedure subject on the heating rate. An occurrence of formal treatment for obtaining Kissinger’s assessment mechanics for various oxidization levels is additionally valid. The addition of B4C was supported to enhance the nanohardness of the coating. The morphology, composition and structure of the thin film coatings were examined by way of SEM, AFM and XRD.

ABSTRACT Objectives To primarily evaluate the functional outcomes of PCNL for bilateral renal calculi/calculi in solitary functioning kidney with Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD). To identify factors affecting the renal replacement therapy following PCNL. Materials and Methods Patients with bilateral renal calculi/calculi in solitary kidney and CKD (eGFR<60/s.creatinine>2) and Good Performance Status [Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG): 0–2] were included in the study. Results A total of 60 patients with CKD who had bilateral renal calculi/calculi in solitary functioning kidney underwent PCNL. At 6 months, eGFR improved or stabilized in 45 (75%) patients, while in 15 (25%) patients eGFR deteriorated. A total of 5 (14.28%) and 2 (25%) patients of CKD stage 4 and 5 respectively had improvement in eGFR as well as CKD stage. Fourteen (82.35%), 21 (60%), 3 (37.5%) patients of CKD stage 3, 4, 5 had improvement in eGFR but not significant enough to cause stage migration. Again 3 (17.65%) , 9 ( 40%) and 3 (37.5%) patients of CKD stage 3, 4, 5 had reduction in eGFR but not significant enough to cause stage migration. None of the patients had worsening of CKD stage. Preoperative CKD stage and eGFR were compared with measurements made at the final follow up visit (6 months). Conclusion Our results indicate that most patients of renal calculi with CKD show improvement or stabilization of renal function with aggressive stone removal. Improvement is more in patients who have mild to moderate CKD. Aggressive management of comorbidities, peri-operative UTI and complications may delay or avoid progression of CKD status in such patients.

The effect of a small uniform axial magnetic field on separation of a binary mixture of incompressible viscous thermally and electrically conducting fluids sheared between two parallel discs of which one is stationary and the other is rotating with a constant angular velocity, is examined. It is assumed that one of the components, which is rarer and lighter, is present in the mixture in a very small quantity. Neglecting the induced electric field the equations governing the motion, temperature distribution and concentration distribution are solved in cylindrical polar coordinate by expanding the flow parameters as well as the temperature and the concentration in powers of Reynolds number. The solution obtained for concentration distribution is plotted against the width of the channel for various values of non-dimensional parameters. It is found that the pressure gradient and the temperature gradient favour the separation of the components of binary fluid mixture but the axial magnetic field retards the same. Near the rotating disc the rarer and lighter component of the binary mixture increases with the increase in the value of the Reynolds number but reverse effect is found in the central part as well as near the stationary discs.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the success of buccal mucosal graft (BMG) urethroplasty by the dorsal onlay technique in long anterior urethral stricture (> 2 cm long) through the midline perineal incision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 1998 to December 2003, 43 patients with long anterior urethral strictures were managed by dorsal onlay BMG urethroplasty. After voiding trial, they were followed up at 3 months with uroflowmetry, retrograde urethrogram (RGU) and American Urological Association symptoms score (AUA symptoms scores). Successful outcome was defined as normal voiding with a maximum one attempt of VIU after catheter removal. Patients were further followed-up with uroflowmetry at 3 months interval and RGU every 6 months interval. RESULTS: Mean stricture length was 4.8 cm (range 3 to 9 cm) and mean follow up was 48 months (range 12 to 84 months). Only five patients were found to develop stricture at anastomotic site, during follow-up. Two of them voided normally after single attempt of VIU. Other three patients (6.9%) required further open surgery or repeat VIU during follow up and were considered as failure. CONCLUSION: Dorsal onlay BMG urethroplasty is a simple technique with good surgical outcome.

Experimentos foram dirigidos para testar o efeito da temperatura na oviposição em quatro espécies do grupo melanogaster da Drosophila: D. ananassae, D. bipectinata, D. malerkotliana e D. biarmipes. Em cada espécie, duas linhagens selvagens foram usadas e os ovos depositados por fêmeas em três temperaturas (19°C, 24°C e 30°C) foram contados por quatro dias com intervalo de 24 horas. É evidente, a partir dos resultados, que as fêmeas de D. ananassae, D. bipectinata, D. malerkotliana e D. biarmipes depositam um número mais baixo de ovos em temperaturas baixas. Deste modo, a oviposição nestas quatro espécies de Drosophila é reduzida significativamente em baixa temperatura.

Experiments were conducted to test the effect of temperature on oviposition in four species of the melanogaster group of Drosophila: D. ananassae, D. bipectinata, D. malerkotliana and D. biarmipes. In each species, two wild strains were used and eggs laid by females at three different temperatures (19°C, 24°C and 30°C) were counted for four days at 24 h interval. It is evident from the results that females of D. ananassae, D. bipectinata, D. malerkotliana and D. biarmipes lay low number of eggs at low temperature (19°C). Thus oviposition in these four species of Drosophila is significantly reduced at low temperature.
