ABSTRACT The largest proportion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Agriculture sector of the Brazilian national GHG inventory is derived from the large (>200 million head) herd of cattle. The greatest contribution to these emissions comes from the enteric methane from cattle, but the direct and indirect emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) from cattle excreta and N fertilizer are responsible for approximately 9 % of all national anthropogenic GHG emissions. Ammonia (NH3) can be volatilized from N fertilizer and cattle excreta and deposited in sites remote from the source, constituting an indirect source of N2O. This study aimed to determine whether direct N2O emissions and NH3 volatilization from N-fertilized pastures were greater than those derived from a mixed grass-legume pasture without N fertilizer addition. Emissions of N2O and NH3 from excreta and N fertilizer from a Palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) monoculture fertilized with 2 × 60 kg N ha-1 yr-1 urea were compared to those from a mixed Palisade grass-forage peanut (Arachis pintoi) pasture. Dung and urine were collected from these cattle, and NH3 losses and N2O emissions from the excreta and from N fertilizer were monitored using static chamber techniques. Volatilization of NH3 and N2O emissions were found to be greater from urine than from dung. Ammonia losses from excreta and urea fertilizer were low, not exceeding 6.8, 1.1, and 4.7 % of the N applied as urine, dung, and fertilizer, respectively. The N2O emissions showed a tendency to be greater for the urine from the N-fertilized compared to the mixed grass-legume pasture, and the N2O emissions from the urine of the N-fertilized pasture ranged from 0.08 to 0.94 % of applied urine N. The N2O emission from the N fertilizer was at maximum 0.46 % of the applied N. The direct N2O emissions and the loss of NH3 by volatilization (indirect N2O emission) from the excreta of cattle grazing the mixed grass-legume pasture were similar to, or lower than, the grazed grass monoculture fertilized with 120 kg N ha-1 yr-1. As the mixed pasture received no N fertilizer and hence no GHG emission from its manufacture or application, introducing forage peanut to the Urochloa brizantha pastures shows potential to be responsible for lower GHG emissions than the N fertilized grass pasture. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To establish a microcephaly cut-off size in adults using head circumference as an indirect measure of brain size, as well as to explore factors associated with microcephaly via data mining. METHODS In autopsy studies, head circumference was measured with an inelastic tape placed around the skull. Total brain volume was also directly measured. A linear regression was used to determine the association of head circumference with brain volume and clinical variables. Microcephaly was defined as head circumference that were two standard deviations below the mean of significant clinical variables. We further applied an association rule mining to find rules associating microcephaly with several sociodemographic and clinical variables. RESULTS In our sample of 2,508 adults, the mean head circumference was 55.3 ± 2.7cm. Head circumference was related to height, cerebral volume, and sex (p < 0.001 for all). Microcephaly was present in 4.7% of the sample (n = 119). Out of 34,355 association rules, we found significant relationships between microcephaly and a clinical dementia rating (CDR) > 0.5 with an informant questionnaire on cognitive decline in the elderly (IQCODE) ≥ 3.4 (confidence: 100% and lift: 5.6), between microcephaly and a CDR > 0.5 with age over 70 years (confidence: 42% and lift: 2.4), and microcephaly and males (confidence: 68.1% and lift: 1.3). CONCLUSION Head circumference was related to cerebral volume. Due to its low cost and easy use, head circumference can be used as a screening test for microcephaly, adjusting it for gender and height. Microcephaly was associated with dementia at old age.

Abstract Background Traditionally, the most effective therapy in the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) has been oral anticoagulation with vitamin K inhibitors, particularly warfarin, whose disadvantages and adverse effects have led to their replacement by "direct oral anticoagulants", as factor X inhibitor. Objectives This study aimed to conduct a brief approach on atrial fibrillation (AF) and use of Rivaroxaban, and to comparatively evaluate the prothrombin time / International Normalized Ratio (PT/INR) in patients with AF in use of this oral anticoagulant, depending on the time elapsed between the last administration of the drug and the time of blood sample venipuncture. Methods We evaluated 34 patients with AF in use of Rivaroxaban by using PT / INR, distributed into a subgroup with blood collection time ≤ 12 hours (n = 7) and > 12 hours after the last drug intake (n = 27). Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the groups and p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results An analysis as a function of time between the Rivaroxaban intake and blood collection, revealed that PT / INR suffers the greatest effect up to 12 hours after ingestion of the drug, dropping to levels close to normal in subsequent hours before the next dose. Conclusion We concluded that, in contrast to warfarin, the knowledge of the time interval between drug intake and blood collection from patients taking Rivaroxaban is essential to properly interpret a laboratory test to assess hemostasis, particularly PT and its derivatives. ABSTRACT Maintaining an adequate water supply is essential to obtain maximum yields in vegetable crops. As such, this study aimed to determine the water requirements (ETc) and crop coefficients (Kc) of arugula grown in a protected environment under subtropical climate conditions. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Center for Irrigation Technology of the State University of Maringá in Maringá, Paraná state (PR), Brazil. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was determined using three constant water table lysimeters and reference evapotranspiration with the Penman-Monteith equation. The total water consumption of the arugula crop was 113.27 mm. The average values obtained for the crop coefficients in the initial, mid- and late-season stages were 1.92, 1.03 and 1.80, respectively.

Abstract Introduction The importance of our study lies in the fact that we have demonstrated the occurrence ofmechanical dysfunction within polypoid tissues, which promotes the development of polyps in the nasal cavity. Objective To change the paradigm of nasal polyposis (NP). In this new conception, the chronic nasal inflammatory process that occurs in response to allergies, to pollution, to changes in the epithelial barrier, or to other factors is merely the trigger of the development of the disease in individuals with a genetic predisposition to an abnormal tissue remodeling process, which leads to a derangement of the mechanical properties of the nasal mucosa and, consequently, allows it to grow unchecked. Data Synthesis We propose a fundamentally new approach to intervening in the pathological process of NP, addressing biomechanical properties, fluid dynamics, and the concept of surface tension. Conclusion The incorporation of biomechanical knowledge into our understanding of NP provides a new perspective to help elucidate the physiology and the pathology of nasal polyps, and new avenues for the treatment and cure of NP.

ABSTRACT The ability of antioxidant compounds in vegetables to prevent disease is important for the pharmaceutical and food industries. In addition, water stress can enhance the existing antioxidant capacity of plants. As such, this study aimed to assess the effect of different irrigation depths and selenium application on the postharvest characteristics of cauliflower. A randomized block design was used in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with four repetitions. The first factor consisted of three irrigation depths with regulated deficit irrigation (RDI): severe (50% ETc) and moderate RDI (75% ETc) and complete irrigation (100% ETc), performed after inflorescence initiation, and the second of foliar spraying of selenium (with and without the element). Selenium application increased cauliflower yield under moderate RDI and no water/drought stress. Moderate RDI was the most effective strategy for maintaining yield and increasing the antioxidant capacity and phenolic compound content of cauliflower. Foliar spraying of selenium raised total polyphenol content under drought stress. Severe RDI extended the shelf life of cauliflower florets.

BACKGROUND Polymyxins are currently used as a “last-line” treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections. OBJECTIVES To identify the major mechanisms of resistance to polymyxin and compare the genetic similarity between multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains recovered from inpatients of public hospitals in the Mid-West of Brazil. METHODS 97 carbapenems non-susceptible K. pneumoniae were studied. β-lactamases (bla OXA-48, bla KPC, bla NDM, bla CTX-M, bla SHV, bla TEM, bla IMP, bla VIM) and mcr-1 to mcr-5 genes were investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mutations in chromosomal genes (pmrA, pmrB, phoP, phoQ, and mgrB) were screened by PCR and DNA sequencing. Clonal relatedness was established by using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. FINDINGS K. pneumoniae isolates harbored bla KPC (93.3%), bla SHV (86.6%), bla TEM (80.0%), bla CTX-M (60%) genes. Of 15 K. pneumoniae resistant to polymyxin B the authors identified deleterious mutations in pmrB gene, mainly in T157P. None K. pneumoniae presented mcr gene variants. Genetic polymorphism analyses revealed 12 different pulsotypes. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Deleterious mutations in pmrB gene is the main chromosomal target for induction of polymyxin resistance in carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae in public hospitals in the Mid-West of Brazil.

ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study were to determine the rates of plant litter deposition and decomposition in Marandu pastures (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) under a) three forms of nitrogen (N) supply, b) at different stages of rotational grazing and c) to compare the single-exponential decay constant (‘k’) derived from litterbags with values derived from estimates of deposited and existing litter (DEL technique). The three N supply treatments were: without or with N fertilization (zero or 150 kg N ha-1 yr-1) or with the legume Desmodium ovalifolium. There were no significant differences (p<0.05) between existing litter and rates of litter deposition and decomposition between the three N supply treatments. The litter decomposition rate was estimated using the DEL technique for the 7-day grazing periods and two subsequent 14-day periods in each 35-day grazing cycle. The litter decomposition rate was (P<0.05) higher for the second rest period (days 21 to 35) at 0.089 g g-1 day-1, than for the grazing period (0.038 g g-1 day-1) and for the first rest period (0.040 g g-1 day-1). The mean half-life of the litter was 12 days using the DEL technique while the estimate from the litterbags was 136 days. Results showed that estimates provided by litterbags severely underestimate the decomposition in relation to the DEL technique and predict a long-term accumulation of litter which is not observed.

The volatile compounds formed by thermal degradation of the carotenoids present in Dunaliella bardawil were investigated by microwave irradiation (MW) and water bath heating (WB) in different conditions of temperature and time using central composite design. Volatiles extraction by solid phase microextraction (SPME) was optimized and performed at 40 °C for 15 minutes, and those in greater amount were quantified by a validated method of gas chromatography coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-qMS). Employing WB, 10, 12 and 120 ng mL-1 of β-cyclocitral, α-ionone e β-ionone, respectively, were obtained between 60 and 87 °C for 30-75 min, while by MW, 5, 5, 50 ng mL-1 were obtained between 75-107 °C for 1.5-2.8 min. Considering the shorter time of MW, it can be concluded that if the time necessary to obtain the best yield by WB is employed in multiple MW cycles, an amount 10 times greater of those compounds would be obtained by MW than by WB. The results suggest a new biotechnology application for the carotenoids of the microalgae of the Dunaliella genus.

O consórcio do amendoim forrageiro cv.
AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition of the pasture Brachiaria Brizantha intercropped with peanut or fertilized with N and carcass characteristics of beef cattle. The pasture was managed under rotational grazing with stocking continues, with variable stocking, using 16 Nellore bulls. In the evaluation of dry matter production total green significance was observed between treatments and periods evaluated, and treatment consortium presented a higher average. The variable crude protein showed significance between treatments and periods. The NDT and FDN had no significant effect on the evaluation of the grass. Periods had lower ADG were the 4th and 6th periods. For the PB, FDN and NDT legume 3rd period showed the lowest averages. For variables GMD, NAD, GPC showed statistical significance for the interaction, and the 1st treatment period consortium submitted the highest averages. In the treatment of the largest fertilizer stocking rates were achieved in stations where chemical fertilization occurred. Statistical significance was observed for the variable conformation carcass classification. The consortium forage peanut cv. Belmonte may be using to replace fertilization with 120kg / N / ha, as it ensures even weight gain per animal, without changing the commercial carcass traits.

School Psychology has experienced a moment of criticism on patterns of action from mainstream approaches based on diagnostic and treatment. Now, actions compromised with the quality of education have been prioritized. A research was done aiming at knowing psychologists´ practices in municipal departments of education. This research has covered 98 cities from the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais. Questionnaires and interviews were used to search for information about the history of the service; structure and work conditions; professional practices; and theoretical backgrounds. This paper is based on two of those interviews, and presents practices from psychologists that are in consonance with the Critical School Psychology. We identify that important practices have been conducted in the sense that psychology contributes for the school, actually being a space for humanization and knowledge appropriation. However the study also reveals the importance of public policies that improve work conditions and extend possibilities of actions for the psychologist along education.

Body condition scoring (BCS) was compared to an ultrasound subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) determination in relation to the reproductive efficiency of Mangalarga Marchador embryo donor mares. Fifty six barren mares were studied throughout the 2008/2009 breeding season (August through April) and the experiment was designed in a completely randomized scheme. BCS was higher in older mares and increased with time in the experiment, and there was a positive interaction between weight and time. Weight was not associated with age, but increased throughout the experiment. Tail and rib BCS increased with age, and decreased with time. There was a positive correlation between BCS and tail and rib SFT. The diameter of the dominant follicle increased during the estrous cycle and was smaller for mares with BCS below 6.5. Age did not influence the dominant follicle diameter. The mean ovulatory follicle diameter was 38.43 ± 3.09. Embryo recovery was not affected by age or BCS but was lower (41%, P=0.003) in mares that ovulated follicles smaller than 40mm compared to mares ovulating follicles greater than 40mm (59%). Donor age was not associated with recipient pregnancy rates. Body fat affected the reproductive efficiency in mares, and seems that ultra-sonography may be essential for correct and reliable body condition scoring.
