Abstract Although maize is one of the main crops in the Northeast region, yield is still considered low when compared to other regions. One of the main solutions to increasing yield is the selection of cultivars adapted to the conditions of the Northeast region. Thus, the present study aims to use the Bayesian segmented regression model to evaluate the adaptability and stability of maize. The experiment was set up in a randomized block design with two repetitions, where 25 maize hybrids were evaluated in different states. Initially, the analysis of variance was performed. Then, the Bayesian approach of the segmented regression method was used to select the hybrids regarding adaptability and stability. There was a difference between the genotypes indicated using the a priori distribution and those indicated by the minimally informative a priori distribution. RESUMO: A interação genótipo x ambiente representa um grande desafio na identificação e seleção de genótipos responsivos às diversas condições de clima e solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e selecionar pré-cultivares de feijão carioca e feijão carioca precoce com base na adaptabilidade, estabilidade e produtividade de grãos. Na safra 2014 foram conduzidos dois ensaios regionais de competição no estado de Pernambuco: feijão carioca (14 genótipos em Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru e São João) e feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos em Araripina, Arcoverde e Caruaru) e na safra de 2015 com feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos, em Araripina, Arcoverde e Brejão). Os parâmetros foram estimados por meio de modelos mistos e a seleção foi realizada pelo método da Média Harmônica do Desempenho Relativo dos Valores Genéticos (MHPRVG), adotando-se três estratégias: i) seleção com base no valor genético predito, sem interação; ii) seleção com base no valor genético predito, considerando cada local; iii) seleção simultânea quanto à produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Observou-se que os ambientes influenciaram na expressão fenotípica dos genótipos de feijão carioca e carioca precoce, configurando adaptação específica. Os genótipos BRS Notável, BRS Estilo e BRS Pérola, de feijão carioca, e CNFC 15875, BRS Notável e CNFC 15630, de feijão carioca precoce, apresentaram os melhores desempenhos nos ambientes testados, considerando-se, simultaneamente, a adaptabilidade a diferentes condições edafoclimáticas, estabilidade de desempenho e produtividade de grãos.

ABSTRACT: Genotype x environment interactions represent a major challenge in identifying and selecting genotypes responsive to different climate and soil conditions. This research evaluated and selected pre-cultivars of carioca bean and early carioca bean based on adaptability, stability, and grain yield. In the 2014 crop season, two regional competition trials were conducted in the state of Pernambuco: carioca beans (14 genotypes in Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru and São João) and early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Caruaru) and, in the 2015 crop season, with early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Brejão). Parameters were estimated by mixed models, and the selection was performed using the Harmonic Mean of Relative Performance of Genetic Values (HMRPGV) method following three strategies: i) selection based on predicted genetic value with no interaction; ii) selection according to predicted genetic value considering each location; and iii) simultaneous selection for grain yield, adaptability, and stability. The environments influenced the phenotypic expression of the carioca and early carioca bean genotypes, representing a specific adaptation. The genotypes BRS Notável, BRS Estilo and BRS Pérola, of carioca beans, and CNFC 15875, BRS Notável and CNFC 15630, of early carioca beans, had the best results in the environments tested, regarding, simultaneously, adaptability to different soil and climate conditions, performance stability, and grain yield.

ABSTRACT Maize is importance in the semiarid region due to its forage potential. However, the large number of hybrids on the market hampers the selection of the hybrid by the producer. Given the above, the objective of this paper is to identify genotypes with productive potential for forage and grain production according to the characteristics of the semiarid region of Brazil. Twenty genotypes with different genotypic classes were evaluated in two years (2018 and 2019) in the municipality of Gracho Cardoso, state of Sergipe. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), with two replicates. Genotype characteristics, grain yield, and forage mass were evaluated and the results were estimated using mixed models and GT Biplots. The genotypic classes consisting of topcrosses and intervarietal hybrids showed high average grain yield and the three classes produced equally on average for forage mass. It was observed that the HI, HTC, and V genotypic classes were the most responsive for grain yield, forage mass, and dry matter content, respectively. Therefore, it is concluded that the genetically broad-based hybrids (HTC and HI) were the most promising for the semiarid of region of Sergipe, while interspecific hybrids were the most productive and stable.

RESUMO O milho é bastante cultivado na região semiárida brasileira e contém alto valor energético na dieta animal. Sabendo disto, objetivou-se caracterizar diferentes classes genéticas de milho quanto ao seu potencial forrageiro nas condições semiáridas de Sergipe. Para isso, foram avaliados 36 genótipos em blocos incompletos em Látice quadrado reticulado 6x6, com duas repetições, na fazenda experimental da Embrapa – Semiárido, em Graccho Cardoso-SE. As variáveis analisadas foram: altura da planta, diâmetro do colmo, peso de planta, massa fresca, massa seca, porcentagem de massa seca e massa de forragem. Com os dados obtidos foi realizada análise de variância com auxílio do software SAS 9,4 e, para a geração dos componentes principais (CP) e gráficos, foi utilizado o software R com o pacote “GGEBiplotGUI”. Todas as variáveis apresentaram diferenças significativas entre classes genéticas. Os dois primeiros componentes principais contemplaram 83,9% da variação total. O autovalor do primeiro CP (CP1) foi de 4,11, considerado muito significativo, já que a soma de todos os autovalores foi de 6,99. A porcentagem de massa seca, diâmetro do colmo, peso de planta, massa fresca, seca e de forragem obtiveram maior capacidade de discriminar as classes genotípicas. Os híbridos intervarietais ficaram mais próximos do genótipo “ideal”. A maior correlação positiva foi entre massa de forragem e massa seca. Os híbridos simples e triplos destacaram-se individualmente na altura da planta e porcentagem de massa. A massa seca e de forragem obtiveram maiores médias em todas as classes, exceto nos híbridos simples. As variedades foram as menos estáveis nas avaliações. Os híbridos intervarietais apresentaram maior potencial forrageiro e os duplos, topcross e variedades maior variabilidade genética, as demais classes não são indicadas para agricultores de baixa e média tecnologia quando cultivados em região semiárida para forragem de milho.

ABSTRACT Corn is widely grown in the semi-arid region and contains high energy value in the animal diet. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize different genetic classes of maize cultivated for forage potential in the semiarid conditions the Sergipe. For this, 36 genotypes were evaluated in incomplete blocks in lattice square reticulate 6x6, with two replications, in the experimental farm of Embrapa - Semiárido, in Graccho Cardoso-SE. The variables analyzed were: plant height, stem diameter, plant weight, fresh weight, dry weight, percentage of dry weight and forage weight. With the data obtained was accomplished an analysis of variance with the help of software SAS 9,4 and, for generation the principal component analysis (PCA) and graphics, was used the software R with the package “GGEBiplotGUI”. All the variables showed significant differences between genetic classes. The first two main components included 83.9% of the total variation. The eigenvalues of the first PC (PC1) were 4,11, considering more significant, since the sum of all was of 6,99. The percentage of dry mass, stem diameter, plant weight, fresh, dry and forage mass obtained greater hability to discriminate genotypic classes. The intervarietal hybrids were closer to the “ideal” genotype. The greatest positive correlation was between forage weight and dry weight. The single and triple hybrids stood out individually in plant height and percentage of mass. The dry and forage mass obtained higher averages in all classes, except for simple hybrids. The varieties were the least stable in the evaluations. The intervarietal hybrids showed greater forage potential and the double, topcross and varieties had greater genetic variability, already to the genetic classes they are not indicated for farmers of low and mean tech in the semiarid region for forage of maize.

RESUMEN El conocimiento sobre la causa y el efecto entre dos o más rasgos puede ayudar a aumentar la precisión de la selección de genotipos superiores. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue evaluar la relación de causa y efecto entre el volumen de expansión y el tamaño del grano en los híbridos de palomitas de maíz utilizando análisis de ruta y red bayesiana. Se evaluó un total de 41 híbridos de palomitas de maíz siguiendo un diseño de bloques completos al azar (DBCA) con dos repeticiones en la ciudad de Jaboticabal, Brasil. Los rasgos evaluados fueron la longitud del grano (LG), el grosor del grano (GG), el ancho del grano (AG), índice de redondez de la cariopsis (IRC), la masa de 50 granos (MG) y el volumen de expansión (VE). Las mediciones se realizaron en granos individuales, utilizando tres muestras de 50 granos de cada parcela. Se estimaron el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson, el análisis de ruta y la red bayesiana. Se detectó una correlación negativa entre VE y los rasgos, a excepción de GT. El análisis de ruta indicó que MG tiene un efecto directo y positivo sobre VE y la correlación negativa observada se debe principalmente a los efectos indirectos de LG y GG Las redes bayesianas no detectaron una asociación directa entre el tamaño del núcleo y el volumen de expansión, mientras que indicaban que GG es el único rasgo que puede afectar el tamaño de las hojuelas de palomitas de maíz.

ABSTRACT Knowing the cause and effect among two or more traits can help to increase the selection accuracy of superior genotypes. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the cause and effect relationship between expansion volume and kernel size in popcorn hybrids using path analysis and Bayesian network. A total of 41 popcorn hybrids were evaluated through a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two replicates in the city of Jaboticabal, Brazil. The assessed traits were grain length (GL), grain thickness (GT), grain width (GW), caryopsis roundness index (Cri), mass of 50 grains (MG), and expansion volume (EV). Measurements were performed on individual grains, using three 50-grain samples from each plot. Pearson's correlation coefficient, path analysis and Bayesian network were estimated. A negative correlation was detected among EV and the traits, except for GT. Path analysis indicated that MG has a direct and positive effect on EV and the negative correlation observed is mainly due to the indirect effects by GL and GT. Bayesian networks did not detect a direct association between kernel size and expansion volume while indicating that GT is the only trait that can affect popcorn flake size.

ABSTRACT The cultivation of genotypes non-adapted to the cultivation region of interest is among the main factors responsible for low yield. The aim of the present study is to select hybrid maize through GGE biplot analysis and to assess its adaptability and stability in different environments in Northeastern Brazil. Twenty-five hybrid maize cultivars were assessed in ten different environments in Northeastern Brazil in 2012 and 2013 based on the randomized block design, with two replications. The analysis of variance and assessment of genotype adaptability and stability were made through GGE biplot analysis, based on grain yield. Analysis of variance results showed different performances depending on the genotype, as well as genotype/environment interaction. The biplot analysis was efficient on data interpretation and represented 63.73% of the total variation in the first two main components, it also allowed classifying the ten environments into three macro-environments. Most environments were positively correlated. Hybrids 2 B 604 HX, 30 A 95 HX, 2 B 587 HX and 2 B 710 HX were responsive and stable. Hybrid 30 A 16 HX was recommended for macro-environments2 and 3. Cultivar 30 A 68 HX was recommended to environment 1. São Raimundo das Mangabeiras and Nova Santa Rosa counties were discriminating and representative. Nossa Senhora das Dores, Umbaúba, Teresina, Brejo, Frei Paulo, Colinas and Balsa counties were ambiguous and non-recommended for further evaluations.

RESUMO: O uso de genótipos adaptados a diferentes regiões é uma das principais formas de aumentar a produtividade brasileira de feijão. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o desempenho genotípico de feijão carioca via modelos mistos. Foram avaliados 14 genótipos de feijão carioca em quatro locais do estado de Pernambuco (Arcoverde, Caruaru, Belém de São Francisco e São João) no ano de 2015. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados pela metodologia REML/BLUP, e a seleção baseou-se no método da média harmônica da performance relativa dos valores genéticos (MHPRVG). A herdabilidade média dos genótipos apresentou magnitude moderada, aliada a alta acurácia seletiva, o que possibilita a seleção de indivíduos agronomicamente superiores. Os genótipos ‘BRS Notável’, CNFC 15480 e ‘IPR 139’ apresentaram boa adaptabilidade e estabilidade produtiva de grãos. Houve concordância entre as estatísticas μ ̂ + g ̂..., estabilidade de valores genéticos (MHVG), adaptabilidade de valores genéticos (PRVG) e estabilidade e adaptabilidade de valores genéticos (MHPRVG) na discriminação dos genótipos mais produtivos e com alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade, indicando que elas podem fazer parte de critérios seletivos na rotina dos programas de melhoramento do feijão.

ABSTRACT: Using genotypes adapted to different regions is one of the main ways to increase Brazilian bean yield. The aim of the present study was to assess the genotypic performance of Carioca beans through mixed models. Fourteen Carioca bean genotypes were assessed in four locations in Pernambuco State (Arcoverde, Caruaru, Belém de São Francisco and São João counties) in 2015. The experiments followed a completely randomized block design, with three repetitions. Genetic parameters were estimated according to the REML/BLUP methodology, whereas genotype selection was based on the harmonic mean of relative performance of genetic values method (MHPRVG). The mean genotype heritability had moderate magnitude, high selective accuracy, besides allowing selection of agronomically superior individuals. Genotypes ‘BRS Notável’, CNFC 15480 and ‘IPR 139’ showed good adaptability and grain yield stability. There was agreement among the statistics μ ̂ + g ̂…, stability (MHVG), adaptability (PRVG), and stability and adaptability of genetic values (MHPRVG) in the discrimination of the most productive genotypes, which presented high adaptability and stability. This outcome indicated that these genotypes can be part of the selection criteria regularly used in bean breeding programs.

RESUMO: O feijão-vagem (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) é uma hortaliça rica em nutrientes, muito apreciada no Brasil, mas pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer a natureza das características de interesse e selecionar plantas, para seguir o programa de melhoramento de feijão-vagem, por meio da análise biplot de genótipo x característica. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e 17 genótipos. Foram feitas análise de variância, análise de componentes principais e os gráficos bilots para número de vagem por planta, número de sementes por vagem, número de sementes por planta, peso de sementes por planta, peso de 100 sementes, produtividade de grãos e produtividade de vagem. A análise de variância mostrou existência de variabilidade genética entre os genótipos. Produtividade de grãos, produtividade de vagens e peso de sementes por plantas são altamente correlacionados. O número de sementes por vagem tem correlação negativa com peso de vagem, peso de grãos e peso de sementes por planta. Os genótipos Feltrin e UENF 14-30-3 foram indicadas para obtenção de ganhos para as variáveis produtividade de grãos e produtividade de vagem.

ABSTRACT: The green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a nutrient-rich vegetable much appreciated; although, little studied, in Brazil. The aim of the current study was to investigate the nature of traits of interest, as well as to select plants for the green bean breeding program based on genotype vs. trait biplot analysis. The experiment followed a randomized block design, with 4 repetitions and 17 genotypes. Analysis of variance, principal component analysis and biplot charts were performed to analyze the number of pods per plant, the number of seeds per pod, the number of seeds per plant, seed weight per plant, 100-seed weight, as well as grain and pod yields. The analysis of variance showed genetic variability between genotypes. Grain yield, pod yield and seed weight per plant were highly correlated. The number of seeds per pod was negatively correlated with pod weight, grain weight and with seed weight per plant. Lines Feltrin and UENF 14-30-3 were indicated to increase gains in variables such as grain yield and pod yield.
