Abstract MGS Guaiçara e MGS Vereda are resistant to Meloidogyne paranaensis, one of the most aggressive nematode parasites of coffee. MGS Vereda is an early maturation cultivar, whereas MGS Guaiçara has a medium maturation cycle. Both cultivars produce red fruit, have high size, and high yield potential in infested areas.

Abstract The specialty coffee market has grown significantly in the past decades and has several cultivars with productive potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensory profile of the beverage produced from Coffea arabica L. genotypes based on postharvest processing and to identify cultivars with the greatest genetic potential for coffee cultivation in the city of Araponga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with two replicates and 11 genotypes with different levels of resistance to rust. The sensory profile demonstrated an interaction between the genotype and the processing technique. Five of the genotypes presented total scores above 85 points according to the SCAA protocol. Moreover, two of these genotypes yielded heightened sensory notes after undergoing dry processing. The selection of coffee genotypes should consider the level of technology involved in the drying of the coffee beans, which preserves the potential quality of the beverage.

Abstract Coffee tree is a shrub with dimorphic branches. The orthotropic stem grows vertically with two near-horizontal plagiotropic branches, per node, in opposite phyllotaxy. The consecutive nodes of the orthotropic stem are organized in parastichies. We report here mutant plants of Coffea arabica with triple plagiotropic branch, resulted from the whorled phyllotaxy of the orthotropic stem. In mutant plants three plagiotropic branches in the same node are separated by angles of approximately 120o, while in normal plants two plagiotropic branches in the same node are separated by angles of approximately 180o. In mutant plants the angles of the parastichies increase approximately 50o clockwise between consecutive nodes, while in normal plants the angles increase approximately 87o. The plant architecture is changed. The triple plagiotropic branch is a putative mutant with potential to be explored in coffee breeding programs. The hypotheses for the origin of the mutation and the research perspectives are discussed.

Abstract This paper presents the results of progeny 1190-1170-2, which was recorded as ‘MGS Travessia’ and selected based on its performance in the state of Minas Gerais. The cultivar has short size, cylindrical canopy, high yield capacity, high vegetative vigor, very satisfactory husk/bean ratio, grain quality compatible to traditional cultivars, and is very responsive to skeleton pruning.

Devido às temperaturas elevadas, basicamente, todas as lavouras de café no estado de Rondônia são da espécie C. canephora. Desse modo, a importação de café arábica de outros estados faz-se necessária para a composição dos blends, além do mercado de cafés especiais ou gourmets. O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar genótipos de café arábica que apresentam desempenho agronômico satisfatório sob condições de temperaturas elevadas. O experimento foi instalado em Ouro Preto do Oeste-RO, com temperaturas médias anuais de 25,8°C e precipitação pluvial média de 2.300mm ano-1. O experimento foi composto por 114 genótipos de café arábica, sendo 103 progênies e onze cultivares testemunhas, fornecidas pela EPAMIG. O delineamento foi blocos casualizados com três repetições, espaçamento de 3,0 x 1,0 metros, com cinco plantas por parcela. Todas as safras demonstraram diferença significativa para a característica produtividade de café beneficiado. Na análise conjunta, foram detectadas diferenças significativas entre progênies e entre cultivares testemunhas. Na média das quatro colheitas, a produtividade de café beneficiado foi de 32,38 sacas ha-1. Destaques para as cultivares 'Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' e 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' que alcançaram produtividades acima de 40 sacas ha-1. O ganho de seleção obtido foi de 14,33 sacas ha-1, que equivale a um aumento de 44,04% na produção de café beneficiado. Destaque para a progênie H514-7-10-6-2-3-9, com produtividade média de 51,20 sacas ha-1. Quanto ao ciclo de maturação, 56% das progênies foram classificadas como ciclo precoce e 44% de ciclo intermediário. Não foi observado genótipo de ciclo tardio

Due to high temperatures, practically all coffee farms in the state of Rondonia are of the C. canephora species. Thus, importing arabica coffee from other states becomes necessary for composition of blends, as well as for the specialty or gourmet coffee market. The purpose of this study was to select arabica coffee genotypes that exhibit satisfactory agronomic performance under high temperature conditions. The experiment was conducted in OuroPreto do Oeste, RO, Brazil, with mean annual temperature of 25.8°C and mean annual rainfall of 2300mm year-1. The experiment was composed of 114 arabica coffee genotypes, with 103 progenies and eleven control cultivars, provided by EPAMIG. A randomized block experimental design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0x1.0 meters and five plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed significant difference for the green coffee yield trait. In joint analysis, significant differences were detected among progenies and control cultivars. In the average of the four harvests, green coffee yield was 32.38 bags ha-1. The cultivars 'CatuaíVermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' and 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' stood out, achieving yields greater than 40 bags ha-1. The gain obtained from selection was 14.33 bags ha-1, which is equivalent to an increase of 44.04% in production of green coffee. The progeny H514-7-10-6-2-3-9 stood out with an average yield of 51.20 bags ha-1. In regard to maturation cycle, 56% of the progenies were classified as early maturity and 44% as medium maturity. Late maturity genotypes were not observed

Foi realizada estratégia de integração dos dados quantitativos e multicategóricos para avaliação da divergência genética entre 88 acessos de Coffea arabica. Avaliaram-se 12 características quantitativas (nota total da qualidade sensorial da bebida; peso de três litros de "café da roça"; peso de três litros de "café da roça" com 11% de umidade; porcentagem de café beneficiado a partir de três litros de "café da roça" com 11% de umidade; peso de três litros de café beneficiado com 11% de umidade; total de frutos de "café da roça" em um litro; porcentagem de frutos secos, passas, cereja, verde-cana e verdes em um litro de "café da roça"; e porcentagem de frutos com lojas vazias em um litro de "café da roça") e seis características multicategóricas relacionadas à qualidade sensorial da bebida (doçura, acidez, corpo, sabor, retrogosto e aspecto geral). Baixa divergência genética foi encontrada entre os acessos considerando as características quantitativas e multicategóricas isoladamente. No entanto, com a conversão dos dados quantitativos em multicategóricos, a integração de características de diferentes naturezas favoreceu a melhor visualização da divergência genética entre os acessos avaliados, devido ao maior número de grupos formados em comparação ao agrupamento para cada conjunto de características.

The strategy of integrating quantitative and multicategorical data was performed to evaluate genetic divergence among 88 accessions of Coffea arabica. Twelve quantitative traits were evaluated: total score of cup quality; weight of 3 L of "farm coffee"; grain yield; weight of 3 L of "farm coffee" with 11% moisture; weight of 3 L of processed coffee with 11% moisture; total "farm coffee" fruit in 1 L; percentage of dry grains, overripe grains, cherry grains, green-cane grains and green grains in 1 L of "farm coffee"; percentage of fruits with empty-locus in 1 L of "farm coffee". Six multicategorical traits related to cup quality (sweetness, acidity, body, taste, after taste, and general aspect) were also evaluated. Low genetic divergence among accessions was found when the analysis of quantitative and multicategorical data was taken individually. However, the integration of the traits favored a better visualization of genetic divergence among the evaluated accessions when the quantitative data were converted into multicategorical ones. This occurred because of the increased number of groups formed when the integration strategy was used.

Objetivou-se no trabalho avaliar o comportamento de 24 cultivares de cafeeiro, sendo 22 resistentes à ferrugem e duas testemunhas suscetíveis, em diferentes ambientes de Minas Gerais, a fim de contribuir para a recomendação técnica. Os experimentos foram instalados em quatro municípios (Lavras, Campos Altos, Patrocínio e Turmalina). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com três repetições, no espaçamento de 3,5x0,7 m e parcelas de dez plantas. As avaliações de produtividade, porcentagem de grãos classificados em peneira 16 acima e vigor vegetativo referem-se a quatro colheitas (2008 a 2012). Foram avaliadas, também, a adaptabilidade e estabilidade da produtividade das cultivares. As cultivares Sabiá Tardio, Pau Brasil MG1, Obatã IAC 1669-20, Catucaí Amarelo 24/137 e IPR 103 são promissoras para as referidas regiões cafeeiras. Essas cultivares aliam estabilidade e adaptabilidade independentemente do ambiente, com desempenho agronômico superior.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of 24 coffee cultivars (22 rust resistant cultivars and 2 susceptible control varieties) in different environments of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The coffee plants were planted in four locations (Lavras, Campos Altos, Patrocínio and Turmalina) in three agroclimatic regions. The experiments were arranged in randomized complete block design, with three replications in plots measuring 3.5x0.7 m, with 10 plants per plot. The following traits were analyzed: yield, percentage of grains retained in sieve size 16 and vegetative vigor from four cropping years (2008 to 2012) and the adaptability and stability in yield. The cultivars showed differential performance in the four environments. The cultivars Sabiá Tardio, Pau Brasil MG1, Obatã IAC 1669-20, Catucaí Amarelo 24/137 and IPR 103 were the most promising because they combined higher agronomic stability and adaptability in favorable and unfavorable environments.

Os ganhos por seleção para produtividade foram estimados em progênies de café arábica portadoras de fatores de resistência à ferrugem. O experimento foi instalado no município de Três Pontas, MG, no delineamento de blocos aumentados. Foram constituídos três blocos com 96 tratamentos regulares (progênies F2) e dois comuns (testemunhas). O espaçamento foi de 3,50 x 0,90 m, com seis plantas por parcela. A reação das plantas à ferrugem foi avaliada, por notas, em 2008. A produtividade (sc ha-1) foi estimada nas safras de 2005 a 2008. Houve diferenças significativas entre tratamentos para produtividade em todas as colheitas avaliadas, exceto 2005. A presença de variabilidade genética entre as progênies permitiu expressivos ganhos em produtividade pela seleção. Nas condições experimentais desta pesquisa, a seleção para produtividade de grãos pode ser efetuada na primeira safra alta, sem grandes prejuízos em relação aos ganhos genéticos obtidos pela seleção baseada na média de quatro colheitas.

Gains from selection for yield were estimated in Arabica coffee progenies carrying rust-resistance genes. The experiment in augmented block design was installed in Três Pontas, state of Minas Gerais. Three blocks were established with six plants per plot, spaced 3.50 x 0.90 m, in 96 regular (F2 progenies) and two control treatments. The plant response to rust was evaluated on a grade scale in 2008. Yield (bags per hectare) was estimated in the growing seasons 2005 to 2008. Significant differences between treatments for yield were observed in all harvests, except 2005. The presence of genetic variability among progenies allowed significant gain from selection for yield. Under the experimental conditions of this study, selection for yield can be performed in the first high-yield year, without major losses compared to genetic gain from selection for yield when based on the mean of four harvests.

Estudou-se a divergência genética de 21 progênies de meios-irmãos - 19 do grupo Congolês e duas do grupo Guineano - de introduções do germoplasma de café robusta (Coffea canephora) do IAC. O estudo baseou-se em análises multivariadas de 14 características morfo-agronômicas, com o propósito de selecionar as progênies mais divergentes, visando à definição de população-base para posterior seleção e produção de híbridos. Avaliou-se também a importância das características discriminantes para análises de divergência, visando ao descarte das variáveis, segundo suas contribuições relativas. O experimento foi plantado e desenvolvido em campo experimental localizado no Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa (SP), em blocos casualizados, com 21 tratamentos e 24 repetições. O agrupamento dos genótipos foi realizado com base nos métodos de Tocher e UPGMA. A matriz de dissimilaridade genética foi obtida por meio da distância generalizada de Mahalanobis, que serviu de base para a formação dos grupos. Os métodos empregados foram eficientes em detectar ampla variabilidade genética entre as progênies avaliadas. Vários grupos dissimilares foram identificados. As progênies IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 e IAC 2291 são indicadas para compor programas de intercruzamentos, por terem sido consideradas as mais promissoras na obtenção de populações segregantes ou híbridos heteróticos. As características que menos contribuíram para a divergência genética foram, hierarquicamente: diâmetro da copa antes da poda, altura da planta antes da poda e área foliar.

It was studied genetic divergence of 21 half-sib progenies, being 19 of the Congolês group and two of the Guineano group, introductions of germoplasma robust (Coffea canephora), based in 14 morpho-agronomic traits and multivariate procedures. It's aims to select the lineages most divergent for definition of population-base for posterior reciprocal recurrent selection and production of hybrids. The importance of the traits for divergence was, also, evaluated by the sequential discards the variables, according its relative contributions. The trial was carry out in an experimental field located in the Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa-SP, using randomized blocks with 21 treatments and 24 replicates. The datas were analyzed by Tocher and UPGMA methods. The matrix of genetic divergence was gotten on the generalized Mahalanobis distance that it served of base for the formation of the groups. The employed methods had been efficient in detecting ample genetic variability between the evaluated progenies. Some groups of similarity had been identified. The IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 and IAC 2291 progenies are indicated to compose programs of intercrosses, being considered the most promising in the attainment of segregantes populations or hybrid heterotics. The characteristics that had less contributed for the genetic divergence had been: canopy diameter before pruning, plant height before pruning and leaf area.

Diferentes estratégias de seleção foram adotadas para estimar os ganhos esperados em dias para florescimento e outros caracteres relacionados em duas populações F2 de soja, oriundas do cruzamento entre linhagens com ausência das três isozimas lipoxigenases em suas sementes e o cultivar comercial IAC-12 portador de genes para período juvenil longo. As duas populações foram conduzidas em Viçosa, MG, no inverno de 1994, sob fotoperíodo natural e em diferentes condições de temperatura. Uma população foi conduzida em casa de vegetação, com aquecimento, e a outra, no campo, sob condições naturais de temperatura. Houve retardamento na data de florescimento das plantas conduzidas no campo, em função das baixas temperaturas observadas no início do desenvolvimento das mesmas. Este fato proporcionou aumento na amplitude de todos os caracteres mensurados, ocasionando maiores ganhos com a seleção das plantas cultivadas no campo, comparadas com as da casa de vegetação. A seleção direta em dias para o florescimento mostrou-se eficiente para ganho neste caráter nas duas populações, além de proporcionar ganhos consideráveis nos outros caracteres avaliados. Os dados demonstraram, também, que a temperatura e o fotoperíodo interagem entre si e com os genótipos, afetando a época de florescimento em soja, com conseqüentes alterações em outros caracteres agronômicos correlacionados, incluindo-se produtividade.

Several different selection strategies were used to estimate expected gain of days to flowering and other related characters in two F2 soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) populations. The sample originated from crosses of lines whose seeds do not contain the three lipoxygenase isozymes with the commercially cultivated IAC-12. IAC-12 is a gene carrier for an extended juvenile period. This study was conducted during the winter of 1994 in Viçosa, Minas Gerais. The plants were grown under natural photoperiod. One population was grown in a heated greenhouse, and the other in the field under natural temperature conditions. Lower temperatures early in the field planting caused a delay in flowering. Delayed flowering caused a broader amplitude in all characters evaluated, and resulted in higher selection gains for the field-grown plants than for the greenhouse-grown plants. Direct selection for number of flowering days proved to be efficient for improving this character in both populations. Gains were also obtained for other characters. Interactions of temperature and photoperiod and temperature and genotypes affected soybean flowering time and produced alterations in other correlated agronomic characters, including productivity.
