ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To explore the associations between current mental health symptoms and social disparities in university students. METHODS: We recruited participants from nine public universities in Brazil, from August to November 2022, using online advertisements and in-person lectures. All participants completed an online survey containing social (sex, race/color, gender identity, sexual orientation, and income) and mental health assessments. The Jeopardy index was composed of social variables. The index considered zero points for subjects with less oppressive experienced characteristics (men, White, cisgender, heterosexual, higher income) and one point for the opposite characteristics. We defined six clusters according to Jeopardy Index results: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 points, with the greatest number of points representing the most disadvantaged group. The mental health symptoms were assessed on two levels. First by the “DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure – Adult,” and second by the “Patient Health Questionnaire-9,” and the “Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7.” Adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) analyses was performed for age and educational level. RESULTS: 748 participants were allocated into the six Jeopardy clusters: 0 (n = 46; 6.1%), 1 (n = 112; 15.0%), 2 (n = 163; 21.8%), 3 (n = 218; 29.1%), 4 (n = 171; 22.9%), and 5 (n = 38; 5.1%). It was observed a high prevalence of anxiety (42.5%) and depression (51.0%), however, the less privileged group (5) had a higher risk of having severe symptoms of anxiety (OR = 6.21; 1.51–25.58; p < 0.01) and depression (OR = 8.60; 2.15–34.43; p < 0.01), compared against the most privileged group. CONCLUSION: Although anxiety and depressive symptoms were highly prevalent for all participants, these disorders are not equally distributed in this population and the intersectionality between social factors plays an important role in contributing to these differences.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to analyze the scientific production of genetic polymorphisms and external apical root resorption (EARR) to establish main findings, geographic trends, and research gaps for possible future investigations. Methods: Unrestricted publications were searched using the Scopus database (March 2023) to include studies that addressed the association between genetic polymorphisms and EARR. Case-control, cohort, cross-sectional, and review studies were considered eligible. The softwares VOS viewer™ and Bibliometrix were used for data analysis. Results: Of the 44 studies analyzed, “Iglesias-Linares A” was the most cited author. The University of Seville (Spain) conducted the most research on this topic. Brazil, Spain, and the USA were the leading countries in terms of citations. The most frequent term in the co-occurrence of keywords was “EARR.” The journal American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics presented a great relevance in the area, demonstrating a high number of publications. Several genetic polymorphisms have been investigated, with interleukins being the most studied. Conclusion: Endodontics is an area of research that should focus more on root resorption and genetic polymorphisms, as it still underexplored, compared to orthodontics. Polymorphisms have been studied as possible predictors of EARR caused by orthodontic tooth movement. However, the gap in the research indicates a need to search for new genes associated with EARR.
O periódico American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics apresentou grande relevância na área, com vários artigos publicados.

ABSTRACT Endophytic microorganisms in lettuce plants have received little attention for their potential biological control of phytopathogens. This study aimed to isolate, identify, and select endophytic bacteria from lettuce seedlings cv. Brava and Creta, antagonistic to the phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria sp. (ALT23) in culture media through direct interaction. The experimental design was completely randomized in an 11 x 2 factorial scheme, with 11 treatments [Control - ALT23 and 10 previously selected bacterial isolates] and two evaluation periods (the 5th and 8th day after inoculation) with four replications each. The 16S rDNA gene sequences of the isolates revealed a high similarity with Bacillus tequilensis KCTC 13622, B. subtilis NCIB 3610, B. velezenzis CR-502, B. siamensis KCTC 13613, and Paenibacillus polymyxa ATCC 842. The selected bacterial isolates reduced ALT23 mycelial diameter (46.2-65.3%) and rate (51.8-91.6%). We conclude that endophytic bacterial isolates with antagonistic potential against phytopathogens must be selected after more than five days of cultivation in a culture medium, as longer cultivation times favor endophyte inhibitory activity.

ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Currently, approximately 144 new species of Brazilian beetles are described each year, and this average is projected to increase in the next decade to 180 species per year, or about one new Brazilian beetle every two days.

Abstract Specific products containing natural resources can contribute to the innovation of complete denture hygiene. Objective: To conduct an in vitro evaluation of experimental dentifrices containing essential oils of Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth (BvK), Copaifera officinalis (Co), Eucalyptus citriodora (Ec), Melaleuca alternifolia (Ma) and Pinus strobus (Ps) at 1%. Methodology: The variables evaluated were organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics, abrasiveness (mechanical brushing machine) simulating 2.5 years, and microbial load (Colony Forming Units - CFU/mL), metabolic activity (XTT assay) and cell viability (Live/Dead® BacLight™ kit) of the multispecies biofilm (Streptococcus mutans: Sm, Staphylococcus aureus: Sa, Candida albicans: Ca and Candida glabrata: Cg). Specimens of heat-polymerized acrylic resins (n=256) (n=96 specimens for abrasiveness, n=72 for microbial load count, n=72 for biofilm metabolic activity, n=16 for cell viability and total biofilm quantification) with formed biofilm were divided into eight groups for manual brushing (20 seconds) with a dental brush and distilled water (NC: negative control), Trihydral (PC: positive control), placebo (Pl), BvK, Co, Ec, Ma or Ps. After brushing, the specimens were washed with PBS and immersed in Letheen Broth medium, and the suspension was sown in solid specific medium. The organoleptic characteristics were presented by descriptive analysis. The values of density, pH, consistency and viscosity were presented in a table. The data were analyzed with the Wald test in a generalized linear model, followed by the Kruskal-Wallis test, Dunn's test (mass change) and the Bonferroni test (UFC and XTT). The Wald test in Generalized Estimating Equations and the Bonferroni test were used to analyze cell viability. Results: All dentifrices showed stable organoleptic characteristics and adequate physicochemical properties. CN, Ec, Ps, Pl and PC showed low abrasiveness. There was a significant difference between the groups (p<0.001) for microbial load, metabolic activity and biofilm viability. Conclusions: It was concluded that the BvK, Ec and Ps dentifrices are useful for cleaning complete dentures, as they have antimicrobial activity against biofilm. The dentifrices containing Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth showed medium abrasiveness and should be used with caution.

Abstract In much of the West, including Brazil, drug use has increased since social distancing began in response to the pandemic. Use of smoked and modified drugs, and their impacts on health, may contribute to aggravate the effects of the pandemic. However, studies on the relationship between use of smoked drugs and the new coronavirus are still scarce and have not received enough attention in global health recommendations. This paper aims to briefly review the relationship between use of smoked drugs and acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]. Recent studies also suggest that drug consumption increases the risk of contamination by SARS-CoV-2 and leads to worse prognosis, particularly consumption of drugs that affect lung function. Use of smoked drugs, especially tobacco, is strongly associated with lung diseases that are risk factors for contamination by SARS-CoV-2. It is essential to develop strategies based on specific characteristics of drug users and for mental health professionals to be included in strategic teams. It is also necessary to invest in information campaigns regarding risks and prevention of harm caused by smoked drugs as well as to design strategies that facilitate access to psychosocial treatment during the pandemic. ABSTRACT Objective: To understand the challenges in the care of children born to mothers with COVID-19 during the pandemic. Method: Qualitative research, conducted from November 2020 to May 2021, in two public maternity hospitals, with women who had children during the first wave of the pandemic, diagnosed with COVID-19 during pregnancy and/or childbirth. There were nineteen semi-structured interviews with thematic analysis. Symbolic Interactionism was used as a theoretical framework. Results: Changes in the care for newborn children were identified. In the domestic environment, hygiene measures with the newborn children were intensified, social isolation restricted the support network and mothers felt alone and overwhelmed. In terms of health care, there was a setback in neonatal care and interruption of professional care, such as the suspension of appointments. Conclusion: The pandemic has restructured traditional models of family care, intensified difficulties in accessing healthcare, and exposed children to inherent risks due to a lack of proper follow-up.
Objectives: To compare suicide rates observed in Brazil after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic with the estimated rate based on suicide deaths between 2010 and 2020, and identify sociodemographic variables associated with this outcome. Methods: Ecological time-series study. Data were obtained from Brazilian Unified Health System Department of Information Technology (DATASUS), with the structural break of the data set in March 2020. The number of actual suicides observed and the number of expected suicides if there were no COVID-19 pandemic were analyzed through bayesian structural time series modeling. Results: The overall incidence of suicides in Brazil remained stable after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to what would be expected. However, there was a significant increase in suicide deaths among women (6.9%) and older adult (9.1%). Analysis by macro-regions of the country showed significant increases in suicide deaths in the Center-West (7.4%), Northeast (5.7%), and Southeast (10%). Stratified analyses revealed differences according to age, sex, education, and skin color. Conclusions: Despite stability in the overall number of suicides, this phenomenon occurs heterogeneously among different population groups and regions of Brazil. Rates have increased in populations with a history of poor access to health, which may have been more severely impacted by the pandemic.

Abstract Context: Adolescence is a period of fragility that can potentiate the emergence of stressful events and crises. Several factors have been associated with mental health problems in adolescents, being the family, a fundamental axis to be evaluated, as it may present protective and risk factors for the adolescent. Objective: To identify situations in the family context that cause mental suffering in adolescents. Method: This is an integrative review guided by the recommendations of the PRISMA model, carried out in the databases PubMed, LILACS and SciELO, with publications from 2014 to 2019, using the descriptors "adolescent", "mental health" and "family relations". Results: 19 studies were included, with predominance of international publications. The situations in the family context that are associated with the mental suffering of adolescents are the parenting style, the parents' mental suffering, conflict and intrafamily violence, abuse of psychoactive substances by family members, divorce, migration and parental incarceration. The adolescents' mental suffering was evidenced by a series of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, an increased risk of self-mutilation and attempted suicide in addition to the harmful use of psychoactive substances. Conclusion: The results obtained reinforce the vulnerability of adolescents to mental suffering and point to the need to develop effective interventions to deal with this important public health problem, in addition to strengthening support networks for adolescents and families.

ABSTRACT Although sporotrichosis requires a broad approach for control, few reports have described the relationship between the index case and secondary contacts. In the present work, we report an outbreak involving a woman, a dog, and two cats from the same household environment, including the clinical and epidemiological aspects and outcomes, and discuss the importance of a One Health approach to face this neglected disease. The joint efforts of professionals such as veterinarians and physicians are essential for early diagnosis and surveillance, which contributes to the rapid identification and control of zoonotic sporotrichosis outbreaks.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.
