ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Abstract The canned Amazon River prawn with sauce (tucupi and jambu) was thermally prepared (121 ºC) at three different times (T1: 15 T2: 20 and T3: 25 minutes) in glass bottles. The product obtained 20.86% crude protein, with good acceptance by consumers (global acceptance >7) measured through centesimal and sensory analysis of the hedonic scale. Increased exposure caused obvious changes in the sensorial characteristics of the product, which were not evidenced by consumers in the sensorial analysis, and for this reason, texture profile analysis (TPA) and color (CIELAB) were carried out, in addition to analyses of concentration of Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVB-N), hydrogen potential (pH) and microbiological performed during 12 months, in addition to yield and weight loss by cooking. The sensory analysis did not show a significant difference between the treatments, however, the yield reduced with the application of heat, with the best yield being in treatment T1 (58.76 ± 0.49 a). The centesimal analysis showed excellent values of protein content of 20.86% and lipid content of 0.33%. The treatments followed the variation in color and texture according to the application of heat, mainly concerning the increase in the b* value (10.84 ± 0.70 to 13.50±0.24) and reduction in cohesiveness (0.56 ± 0.05 to 0.50 ± 0.04), gumminess (368.81± 109.23 to 262.09 ± 63.78 g) and chewiness (999.30 ± 356.92 to 633.71 ± 221.56 g). A one-step route was developed for sulfate functionalization of titania foam, consisting of integrating the sol-gel process with an emulsion template. The resulting material was used to evaluate the relevance of the porous structure and surface sulfate groups in the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B molecules in water under UV irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the anatase crystalline phase was metastabilized by functionalization of the surface with sulfate species, which caused the crystallite size to decrease from 21 to 10 nm, while the specific surface area increased from 4 to 42 cm2 g−1. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements during heating of the non-sulfated (E-TiO2) and sulfated (E-TiO2/SO42−) sols emulsified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant and isopropyl myristate as the nonpolar phase, revealed formation of the liquid crystalline structure. Elimination of this mesophase template allowed the preparation of ceramic foams with hierarchical structure formed by meso- and macropore families. The kinetics of photodegradation reaction of Rhodamine B followed a pseudo-first order mechanism. RESUMO Um dos grandes desafios a serem superados é manter e aumentar a produtividade de hortaliças, como o jambu (Acmella oleracea), utilizando processos naturais e organismos vivos que estimulem a produção vegetal, com menos resíduos tóxicos no meio ambiente. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o crescimento de plantas de A.oleracea, por meio de respostas biométricas e fisiológicas, após a aplicação dos fungos entomopatogênicos Beauveria bassiana e Metarhizium anisopliae e do promotor de crescimento Trichoderma asperellum, sob sistemas de plantio protegido e não protegido, nas estações chuvosa e seca da Amazônia. Dois ensaios foram conduzidos simultaneamente, em blocos casualizados, em uma área comercial de agricultura periurbana no município de Ananindeua, Pará, Brasil, em canteiros suspensos protegidos e não protegidos. Os isolados fúngicos de M. anisopliae, B. bassiana e T. asperellum promoveram o crescimento em plantações de jambu, em sistemas de plantio protegido e desprotegido, em ambos os ciclos de cultivo. No entanto, M. anisopliae se igualou aos resultados obtidos com o promotor de crescimento T. asperellum e se destacou por favorecer maior desempenho em todas as variáveis de crescimento avaliadas, principalmente no sistema de cultivo protegido e no período chuvoso amazônico. Além disso, as plantas de A. oleracea apresentaram melhor crescimento em todos os tratamentos, em sistema de plantio protegido, nos dois períodos avaliados. ABSTRACT A great challenge to overcome is how to maintain and increase the productivity of vegetables, such as jambu (Acmella oleracea), by using natural processes and living organisms that stimulate plant production and release fewer toxic residues into the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of A. oleracea, based on biometric, and physiological responses, following the application of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae and the growth promoter Trichoderma asperellum, under protected and unprotected planting systems, in the rainy and dry seasons of the Amazon. Two trials were conducted simultaneously, in randomized blocks, in a commercial area of peri-urban agriculture in the municipality of Ananindeua, Pará state, Brazil, in protected and unprotected hanging beds. Metarhizium anisopliae, B. bassiana, and T. asperellum isolates promoted growth in jambu in protected and unprotected plantation systems, in both crop cycles. Of note, M. anisopliae matched the results obtained with the growth promoter T. asperellum and stood out for favoring greater performance in all of the evaluated growth variables, especially in the protected cultivation system and in rainy season. In addition, A. oleracea grew better in all treatments in a protected planting system and in both evaluated periods. Resumo A identificação de defeitos é atividade rotineira em Sistemas de Gerência de Pavimentos (PMS) para tomadas de decisão sobre serviços de Manutenção e Reabilitação (M&R). Métodos tradicionais podem ser demorados, prejudicar o tráfego e causar acidentes. Neste estudo, patologias em pavimentos asfálticos foram avaliadas a partir de três métodos: por caminhamento, classificação manual de imagens de uma Aeronave Remotamente Pilotada (RPA) e classificação supervisionada. A classificação manual resultou em 93,1% de acerto, contra de 32,7% na classificação supervisionada. Conclui-se que a RPA é adequada para avaliar patologias em pavimentos asfálticos, proporcionando economia de tempo e segurança.
Resumen La identificación de defectos es una actividad rutinaria en los Sistemas de Gestión de Pavimentos (PMS) para la toma de decisiones sobre los servicios de Mantenimiento y Rehabilitación (M&R). Los métodos tradicionales pueden consumir mucho tiempo, interrumpir el tráfico y causar accidentes. En este estudio se evaluaron patologías sobre pavimentos asfálticos utilizando tres métodos: caminando, clasificación manual de imágenes desde una Aeronave Pilotada Remotamente (RPA) y clasificación supervisada. La clasificación manual dio como resultado una precisión del 93,1 %, frente al 32,7 % de la supervisada. Se concluye que el RPA es adecuado para evaluar patologías en pavimentos asfálticos, brindando ahorro de tiempo y seguridad.
Abstract Pathology identification is a routine activity in Pavement Management Systems (PMS) for decision-making about Maintenance and Rehabilitation (M&R) services. Traditional methods can be time-consuming, disrupt traffic, and cause accidents. This study evaluated pathologies on asphalt pavements using walking survey, manual classification of images from a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), and supervised classification. Manual classification resulted in 93.1% accuracy compared to 32.7% in supervised classification. The study concludes that the RPA can evaluate pathologies in asphalt pavements, providing time savings and safety.

In 2019, large amounts of oil reached the northeast coast of Brazil, causing damage to the environment and the local economy, especially in the state of Pernambuco. In order to correlate with possible sources, investigation was made of the geochemical biomarkers of the oils using “gold standard” forensic protocols from the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The biomarkers study was improved by using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), rather than the standard protocol that suggests use of the selected ion monitoring (SIM) method. Analysis was made of thirteen oil samples from the Pernambuco coast, in order to identify their degrees of similarity and the possible presence of oils from unreported spills. The use of eighteen diagnostic ratios and multivariate analysis revealed a cluster formed by eleven samples with biomarker distributions typical of oil from the 2019 spill. However, two samples had anomalous fingerprints, especially due to the absence of the 18α(H)-oleanane and 18β(H)-oleanane isomers. Both the CEN protocol applied for the classical biomarkers and a comprehensive Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FT-MS) analysis of polar compounds confirmed the dissimilarities between the samples. Abstract Background: Exogenous enzyme supplementation is an effective and cost-saving mechanism for increasing the availability of dietary nutrients by increasing digestion and reducing excretion. Objective: To evaluate the effects of phytase supplementation on performance, egg quality, and economic parameters in commercial laying hens fed reduced-nutrient diets from 70 weeks of age. Methods: Novogen White® commercial laying hens (n=256) were randomly allocated to four treatment groups, with eight replicates of eight hens in each group: PC (positive control): conventional diet not supplemented with phytase; diet with reduced levels (RN) of P (-0.12%), Ca (-0.10%), and ME (-14 kcal/kg), and supplemented with 300 phytase units (FTU/kg; RN300FTU); diet with reduced levels of P (-0.16%), Ca (-0.13%), ME (-18 kcal/kg), CP (-8%), synthetic amino acids (-0.01%), and supplemented with 600 FTU phytase/kg (RN600FTU); and diet with reduced levels of P (-0.18% P), Ca (-0.15%), ME (-20 kcal/kg), CP (-20%), synthetic amino acids (-0.01%), and supplemented with 900 FTU phytase/kg (RN900FTU). Results: The layers fed the RN300FTU diet had 2.68% higher egg production than those fed the PC diet. Egg mass produced by PC- and RN300FTU-fed hens was statistically similar. Eggshell thickness was increased in PC-fed hens. Feed cost for the RN900FTU diet was approximately 9% lower compared with that of the PC diet. Conclusion: The best performance and economic results were achieved when layers were fed a reduced-nutrient diet supplemented with 300 FTU phytase.
Resumen Antecedentes: La suplementación con enzimas exógenas es un mecanismo eficaz y económico para aumentar la disponibilidad de nutrientes dietéticos al aumentar la digestión y reducir la excreción. Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos de una dieta con reducción de nutrientes y suplementada con niveles incrementales de fitasa en ponedoras a partir de las 70 semanas de edad sobre su desempeño, calidad del huevo y parámetros económicos. Métodos: Un total de 256 ponedoras Novogen White® se asignaron al azar a cuatro grupos de tratamiento, con ocho réplicas de ocho gallinas en cada unidad experimental: Control positivo (PC) dieta convencional sin fitasa; dieta con niveles reducidos (RN) de P (-0,12%), Ca (-0,10%) y ME (-14 kcal/kg) y suplementada con fitasa (300 FTU/kg: NR300FTU); dieta con NR de P (-0,16%), Ca (-0,13%), ME (-18 kcal/kg), PB (-18%), aminoácidos sintéticos (-0,01%) y suplementada con fitasa (600 FTU/kg: NR600FTU); y dieta con RN de P (-0,18%), Ca (-0,15%), ME (-20 kcal/kg), PB (-20%), aminoácidos sintéticos (-0,01%) y suplementada con fitasa (900 FTU/kg: RN900FTU). Conclusión: Las ponedoras alimentadas con la dieta RN300FTU presentaron los mejores resultados económicos y zootécnicos.

Conclusão: Este estudo mostrou que as poedeiras alimentadas com dieta RN300FTU apresentaram os melhores resultados econômicos e zootécnico.

To expand the variety of density functionalized compounds evaluated against severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), we decided to prepare new acetylated and disubstituted 3-hydroxy bis-oxindoles and isoindigos coupling compounds using known protocols. The corresponding isatin derivatives were synthesized by ZrCl4/EtOH/reflux or HCl/AcOH/reflux coupling conditions using oxindole and functionalized isatins, furnishing new 3-hydroxy bis-oxindoles, which were dehydrated into new isoindigos. A total of 27 compounds bearing halogen, nitro and/or hydroxy groups on the isatin moiety at the 3-, 5- and 7-positions, were prepared, including 5 new 3-hydroxy bis-oxindoles and 3 new halogenated isoindigos prepared according to adapted procedures described in the literature. This library of nitrogen-isatin derivatives was evaluated against SARS-CoV-2 using a phenotypic screening assay. In this investigation, isatin derivatives 3d, 3e, 3h and 3i showed antiviral activity when tested at a single concentration. Compound 3e showed antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 in the concentration-response assay; however, it showed cellular toxicity in Vero cells. The present study identified substituted isatins as a promising new starting point for the development of anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents. Abstract This study evaluated the effects of biogenic structures (tree roots and crab burrows) on sediment carbon (C), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe) biogeochemistry during the wet season in the Olaria mangrove forests near the city of Cananéia, São Paulo state, Brazil and the Nobrega mangrove forest approximately 2 km from the city. Anaerobic C oxidation pathways were assessed from sediment profiles and anaerobic incubations and related to the abundance of biogenic structures in the form of pneumatophores and crab burrows. Porewater depth profiles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and SO42- were less steep in the presence than absence of biogenic structures. While Fe(II) appeared unaffected by biogenic structures, Fe(III) levels were significantly higher in the upper 4 cm of the sediment in the presence than absence of vegetation and bioturbation. Surprisingly, the concentration of Fe(III) in this layer was 2-6 times higher in the Nobrega forest (6-13 µmol cm-3) than in the Olaria forest (1.5-6.5 µmol cm-3). Accordingly, depth integrated sulfate reduction (SR) tended to be highest at Olaria, while iron reduction (FeR) was highest at Nobrega. SR accounted for 54-83% of DIC production, with no diference between forested sites, while FeR accounted for 8-24% of DIC production, with a 2-3 times higher contribution in the Nobrega versus the Olaria forest. The results suggest that mangrove roots and crab burrows in mangrove sediments only promote FeR at the expense of SR in the Nobrega forest. It appears that anthropogenic discharge from Cananéia city may have overridden the impact of biogenic structures on sediment redox conditions at Olaria, thereby diminishing the role of FeR without strong stimulation of overall C oxidation rates.

RESUMO O estresse salino afeta o desenvolvimento de diversas culturas, sendo um dos fatores limitantes para a agricultura irrigada no semiárido, onde a adubação nitrogenada e potássica pode ser uma alternativa para a produção agrícola da região. Com esse trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade do uso de água com diferentes salinidades associada a diferentes adubações nitrogenadas e potássicas na produção de mudas da goiabeira cultivar Paluma. O experimento foi conduzido em áreas experimentais da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (UFERSA), Campus Caraúbas. A pesquisa foi realizada no período de fevereiro a junho de 2021. O estudo foi montado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. Foi utilizado um esquema fatorial 5 × 4, que combinou cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa): 0,3, 1,1, 1,9, 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1, com combinações (C) de nitrogênio (N) e níveis de potássio (K2O) de adubação recomendada: C1 = 70% N + 50% K2O, C2 = 100% N + 75% K2O, C3= 130% N + 100% K2O e C4= 160% N + 125% K2O. Irrigação com níveis de condutividade elétrica até 2,1 dS m-1 favoreceu o crescimento das mudas da goiabeira cv. Paluma. As adubações C1 e C2 promoveram os maiores incrementos de crescimento e fitomassa para a goiabeira cv. Paluma aos 125 dias após a semeadura. ABSTRACT Salt stress affects the development of several crops, being one of the limiting factors for irrigated agriculture in the semiarid region, where nitrogen and potassium fertilization can be an alternative for agricultural production. This study aimed to evaluate the viability of using water with different salinities associated with varying amounts of nitrogen and potassium fertilization in the production of seedlings of the guava cultivar Paluma in an experiment conducted in experimental areas of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-arid Region (UFERSA), campus of Caraúbas. The research was carried out from February to June 2021. The study was set up in a randomized block design and analyzed in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme with four replicates, and two plants per plot. Abstract Estuaries are important features for global biogeochemical understanding, due to their highly coupled interaction between sediment and water. In those places, the land-sea transect sometimes has a gradient of physical and chemical characteristics, influencing the availability of nutrients and consequently primary production. This study aimed to observe the benthic aerobic respiration and sediment-water nutrient fluxes in a freshwater to marine transect in the Cananéia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon Complex (CIELC) on the southeastern Brazilian Coast. This area contains the most pristine mangrove at the limit between tropical and subtropical zones, providing an ideal observatory for ecological research programs. Intact sediment cores were incubated in laboratory to determine fluxes of O2, TCO2, and dissolved nutrients. Three different sites with different salinities were sampled during the four seasons of the year. Sediment characteristics of the sites were compared, showing higher organic matter in the lowest saline (LS) site and higher phytopigments in the highest saline (HS) site, as expected. Benthic aerobic respiration, O2 and CO2 fluxes, ranged from −0.4 to −3.2 mmol m−2h−1 and 0.1 to 1.5 mmol m−2h−1, respectively, and exhibited statistically significant variations between seasons and in a salinity gradient. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate, ranging from −228.7 to 544.8 μmol m−2h−1 and −205.8 to 4,173.5 μmol m−2h−1, respectively, were generally released from the sediment, whereas phosphate ranged from −25.2 to 29.6 μmol m−2h−1 with more variation in time and space. The LS site was characterized as a nitrogen sink and a silicate and phosphate releaser, and the HS site was characterized as a nitrogen producer and a phosphorus consumer. Abstract Due to structural similarities and the possibility of connection between the two Aptian paleolakes in the Jatobá Basin and the Tucano Norte Sub-basin in North-eastern Brazil, the influence of the architecture of the crystalline basement under these lacustrine sedimentary rocks was analysed using gravimetric data near the faulted edges of the basins where the paleolakes are located. The Negra (Jatobá Basin) and Tonã (Tucano Norte Sub-basin) Hills are mainly sedimentary deposits of Aptian age and are linked to the post-rift I tectonic sequence. Aiming at the study of reservoirs analogous to pre-salt reservoirs, the gravimetric data were processed and interpreted to define the structural framework of the basin regions around these hills. Depth maps and density models were generated that could be analysed from various 3D perspectives, and the behaviour of the crystalline basement below these sedimentary sequences was investigated. In addition to the identification of horsts and semi-grabens that influenced the current relief pattern, the modelling showed that the Aptian paleolake sedimentary rocks of the Negra Hill are in the Ibimirim Low, which is approximately 2,900 m deep, while in the Tonã Hill, the sedimentary rocks are in the Salgado do Melão Low, which is approximately 5,100 m deep. Abstract Different degrees in the biological activities of Canavalia rosea had been previously reported . In this study, our group assessed the cardioprotective effects of the ethyl acetate fraction (EAcF) of the Canavalia rosea leaves. Firstly, it was confirmed, by in vitro approach, that the EAcF has high antioxidant properties due to the presence of important secondary metabolites, as flavonoids. In order to explore their potential protector against cardiovascular disorders, hearts were previously perfused with EAcF (300 μg.mL-1) and submitted to the global ischemia followed by reperfusion in Langendorff system. The present findings have demonstrated that EAcF restored the left ventricular developed pressure and decreased the arrhythmias severity index. Furthermore, EAcF significantly increased the glutathiones peroxidase activity with decreased malondialdehyde and creatine kinase levels. EAcF was effective upon neither the superoxide dismutase, glutationes reductase nor the catalase activities. In addition, the Western blot analysis revealed that ischemia-reperfusion injury significantly upregulates caspase 3 protein expression, while EAcF abolishes this effect. These results provide evidence that the EAcF reestablishes the cardiac contractility and prevents arrhythmias; it is suggested that EAcF could be used to reduce injury caused by cardiac reperfusion.
