RESUMO A espécie herbácea rizomatosa Hedychium coronarium J.Koenig é de origem asiática e ocorre como invasora na maioria dos estados do Brasil. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a influência de H. coronarium sobre as comunidades de herbáceas terrícolas e de regeneração natural de lenhosas em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Aluvial em Curitiba - PR. As comunidades foram amostradas considerando-se dois tratamentos: (EC) elevada cobertura de H. coronarium(>60%); (BC) baixa cobertura de H. coronarium (<30%). Foram avaliadas duas comunidades: i) espécies herbáceas (incluindo subarbustivas) e ii) plântulas de espécies lenhosas entre 15 cm - 130 cm de altura. No EC, H. coronariumapresentou cobertura média de 78,06%, sendo registradas apenas cinco espécies herbáceas nativas e 24 lenhosas nativas. No BC, a cobertura média da invasora foi de 6,29%, com registro de 17 herbáceas nativas e 37 lenhosas nativas. A herbácea nativa mais representativa foi Christella dentata(Forssk.) Brownsey & Jermy, enquanto, dentre as lenhosas, destacou-se Myrcia selloi(Spreng.) N.Silveira por sua frequência e abundância. A abundância das lenhosas no EC foi aproximadamente quatro vezes menor que no BC, mostrando que a elevada densidade de H. coronariumexerce influência negativa nas comunidades vegetais nativas. A elevada cobertura da espécie invasora resulta na redução da riqueza de espécies e do número de indivíduos nas comunidades, tanto de herbáceas quanto da regeneração de lenhosas. ABSTRACT Hedychium coronariumJ.Koenig is a rhizomatous herbaceous species native to Asia and invasive in most states of Brazil. We aimed to evaluate the influence of H. coronariumon terrestrial herbaceous communities and natural regeneration of woody plants in a remnant of Alluvial Araucaria Forest in Curitiba - PR. The communities were sampled considering two treatments: (EC) high coverage of H. coronarium(>60%); (BC) low coverage of H. coronarium(<30%). Two communities were recorded: i) herbaceous vascular species (including subshrubs) and ii) seedlings of woody species between 15-130 cm height. In EC H. coronariumhad an average cover of 78.06%, with only five native herbaceous species and 24 native woody species. The average cover of the invasive in BC was 6.29%, with 17 native herbaceous and 37 woody native species. The most representative native herbaceous was Christella dentata(Forssk.) Brownsey & Jermy, while among the woody species Myrcia selloi(Spreng.) N.Silveira stood out for its frequency and abundance. The abundance of woody plants in the EC was approximately four times less than in the BC, showing that the high density of H. coronariumnegatively influences native plant communities. Resumo Hypostomus está distribuído por bacias da América Central e do Sul, com grande diversidade de espécies com conflitos taxonômicos. Desta forma, a integração de técnicas auxiliares contribui para a compreensão da sistemática e filogenia do grupo. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar Hypostomus cochliodon e H. boulengeri do riacho Onça (bacia do rio Paraguai) por meio de técnicas aloenzimáticas e citogenéticas. As análises citogenéticas em H. boulengeri mostraram número cromossômico igual a 2n = 68 (14m+14sm+18st+22a), sistema de NOR múltiplo revelado por Ag-NOR e 18S-FISH, um polimorfismo de heterocromatina em acrocêntricos e a presença de microcromossomos Bs. Hypostomus cochliodon mostrou um número diploide de 64 cromossomos (16m+26sm+14st+8a); apesar do sistema de NOR simples, alguns indivíduos apresentaram NOR em ambos os telômeros detectados por Ag-NOR e 18S-FISH. Uma isozima identificou dois loci diagnósticos (Idh-A and Gdh-A) entre as duas espécies e múltiplos loci com alelos únicos em H. boulengeri. A variabilidade genética indicada pela heterozigosidade média (He) foi de 0,2461 e 0,0309 em H. boulengeri e H. cochliodon, respectivamente. Assim, este estudo relata os primeiros dados citogenéticos para H. boulengeri e os primeiros dados isoenzimáticos para H. boulengeri e H. cochliodon. As duas espécies apresentaram evidentes diferenças citogenéticas e isoenzimáticas com a obtenção de marcadores genéticos exclusivos fornecendo suporte para futuros estudos evolutivos no grupo. Abstract Hypostomus is distributed by Central and South America basins, with diverse species with taxonomic conflicts. This way, the integration of auxiliary techniques contributes to understanding the systematics and phylogeny of the group. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the Hypostomus cochliodon and H. boulengeri from the Onça stream (Paraguai River basin) by allozyme and cytogenetic techniques. Hypostomus boulengeri showed a diploid number of 68 chromosomes (14m+14sm+18st+22a), multiple NOR revealed by Ag-NOR and 18S rDNA FISH, a polymorphism of heterochromatin in acrocentrics and the presence of B microchromosome. Hypostomus cochliodon showed a diploid number of 64 chromosomes (16m+26sm+14st+8a); despite the single NOR, some individuals showed NOR in both telomeres detected by Ag-NOR and 18S rDNA FISH. Isozyme identified two diagnostic loci (Idh-A and Gdh-A) between the two species and multiple loci with unique alleles in H. boulengeri. The genetic variability indicated by the mean heterozygosity (He) was 0.2461 and 0.0309 in H. boulengeri and H. cochliodon,respectively.Thus, this study reports the first cytogenetic data for H. boulengeri and the first isozymatic data for H. boulengeri and H. cochliodon. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. HABITAT AND SPECIES SEGREGATION OF STRIGIFORMES IN THE BRAZILIAN ATLANTIC FOREST

ABSTRACT The order Strigiformes contains approximately 250 owl species distributed worldwide, and the majority of them live in forests. Although basic information is available on many owls, few have been studied in-depth; consequently, little is known about the role of vegetation in their lives. This study aimed to investigate Strigiformes in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest using point count surveys conducted from January 2018 to De-cember 2019. Twelve points were sampled for 30 min/month, totaling 144 h. Data on vegetation structure were collected for analysis. The numbers of individuals and species were then estimated. Twenty-six individuals of four species were recorded: 12 Strix virgata, 6 Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana, 5 Megascops atricapilla, and 3 Megascops choliba. Strix virgata was associated with sites with typical mature forest characteristics, although it tolerated variation in some parameters (e.g., average canopy height). Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana was a generalist in terms of habitat characteristics, even when using edge areas. Megascops choliba was scarce within the sampled area and seemed to avoid mature forest. Megascops atricapilla occurred from sites with a lower canopy to more mature forest areas. Altogether, this study highlighted the importance of conserving forest fragments in the Atlantic Forest, which harbors considerable biodiversity, especially of owls.
RESUMEN El Orden Strigiformes contiene aproximadamente 250 especies de búhos distribuidas en el mundo, y la mayoría viven en bosques. Aunque se dispone de información básica sobre muchos búhos, pocos han sido estudiados en profundidad; en consecuencia, se sabe poco sobre el papel que juega la vegetación en sus vidas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar las especies de Strigiformes en un fragmento de la Mata Atlántica. Los recuentos de puntos se realizaron desde enero de 2018 hasta diciembre de 2019; se muestrearon doce puntos durante 30 min/mes, totalizando 144 h. Se recopilaron datos sobre la estructura de la vegetación para su análisis. Luego se estimó el número y las especies presentes. Se registraron 26 individuos de 4 especies: 12 Strix virgata, 6 Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana, 5 Megascops atricapilla y 3 Megascops choliba. Strix virgata se asoció a sitios de características típicas de bosques maduros, aunque tuvo tolerancia en la variación de algunos parámetros (p. ej., altura media del dosel). Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana fue generalista en las características del hábitat, incluso cuando utilizó áreas de borde. Megascops choliba fue escaso dentro del área de muestreo y pareció evitar el bosque maduro. Megascops atricapilla se asoció desde sitios con un dosel más bajo hasta áreas de bosques más maduros. En conjunto, este estudio destacó la importancia de conservar fragmentos de bosque en el Bosque Atlántico, que alberga una biodiversidad considerable, especialmente de búhos.

Results of endoscopic biliary drainage in patients with malignant hilar stricture

Abstract In Malignant Hilar Biliary Stricture (MHBS) palliative biliary drainage is a frequent strategy, improving the quality of life, reducing pruritus, loss of appetite and relieving cholangitis. The endoscopic approach is an effective, although challenging procedure. This study aimed to evaluate technical and clinical success rates of biliary drainage by ERCP. This is a retrospective study including all patients with MHBS referred to Instituto do Cancer do Hospital de São Paulo (ICESP) submitted to biliary drainage by ERCP, between January 2010 and December 2017. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to evaluate predictors of clinical failure, as total bilirubin levels, Bismuth classification, number of hepatic sectors drained and presence of cholangitis. In total, 82 patients presenting unresectable MHBS were included in this study. 58.5% female and 41.5% male, with a mean age of 60±13 years. Bismuth classification grades II, IIIA, IIIB and IV were noted in 23.2%, 15.9%, 14.6% and 46.3%, respectively. Technical and clinical success was achieved in 92.7% and 53.7% respectively. At multivariable logistic-regression analyses, Bismuth IV strictures were related to higher clinical failure rates when compared to other strictures levels, with an Odds Ratio of 5.8 (95% CI 1.28‒20.88). In conclusion, endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant hilar biliary stricture had a high technical success but suboptimal clinical success rate. Proximal strictures (Bismuth IV) were associated with poor drainage outcomes. Abstract In the current study, two euglossine species, Exaerete smaragdina and Eulaema nigrita, a cleptoparasite bee and its host, respectively, were used as models to: (i) access the genetic diversity and population structure of both species, sampled along a wide latitudinal range of Atlantic Forest, where the distribution of El. nigrita and Ex. smaragdina co-occurs; (ii) investigate the evolutionary history of these species through the Atlantic Forest, and in a wider scenario, to examine the evolutionary history of these species across others forest domains. Analyses involved males of El. nigrita and Ex. smaragdina sampled through Brazilian territory, including 19 sites in the Atlantic Forest. Bayesian Skyline Plot (BSP) was used to infer possible climate oscillations on population of both species over time. The BSP revealed stability in effective population size for both species in most of the Plio-Pleistocene period. However, BSP results aligned to the starlike configuration in the haplotype network, neutrality test, and population diversity patterns indicated population expansion of the two species during the late Pleistocene. ABSTRACT Purpose: The angiogenic, osteogenic and anti-inflammatory activity of latex of Hancornia speciosa has been evidenced and indicates pharmacological potential with great applicability in the health area, especially in the wound healing process. The present work aimed to compare the effects of the H. speciosa macroporous latex biomembrane with saline on wound healing. Methods: Forty-three Wistar rats were submitted to excisional wound induction procedure and divided into groups according to treatment: saline (G1), and macroporous biomembrane (G2). The animals were euthanized at three, seven, 14, and 21 days after injury induction (DAI), and three animals were used for the debridement test. Morphometric, macroscopic, and microscopic analyses of general pathological processes were performed. Results: The macroporous biomembrane minimized necrosis and inflammation during the inflammatory and proliferative phases of the healing process, confirmed by the lower intensity of the crust and the debridement effect. In addition, the wounds treated with the macroporous biomembrane presented greater contraction rates in all the experimental periods analyzed. Conclusions: The macroporous biomembrane presents angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and debridement effects, contributing to the healing process, and can be considered a potentially promising new biomaterial to be used as a dressing. This guideline aimed to update the concepts and formulate the standards of conduct and scientific evidence that support them, regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the Cardiomyopathy of Chagas disease, with special emphasis on the rationality base that supported it.nbsp;
Chagas disease in the 21st century maintains an epidemiological pattern of endemicity in 21 Latin American countries. Researchers and managers from endemic and non-endemic countries point to the need to adopt comprehensive public health policies to effectively control the interhuman transmission of T. cruzi infection, and to obtain an optimized level of care for already infected individuals, focusing on diagnostic and therapeutic opportunistic opportunities.

Pathogenic and pathophysiological mechanisms of the Cardiomyopathy of Chagas disease were revisited after in-depth updating and the notion that necrosis and fibrosis are stimulated by tissue parasitic persistence and adverse immune reaction, as fundamental mechanisms, assisted by autonomic and microvascular disorders, was well established. Some of them have recently formed potential targets of therapies.nbsp;
The natural history of the acute and chronic phases was reviewed, with enhancement for oral transmission, indeterminate form and chronic syndromes. Recent meta-analyses of observational studies have estimated the risk of evolution from acute and indeterminate forms and mortality after chronic cardiomyopathy. Therapeutic approaches applicable to individuals with Indeterminate form of Chagas disease were specifically addressed. All methods to detect structural and/or functional alterations with various cardiac imaging techniques were also reviewed, with recommendations for use in various clinical scenarios. Mortality risk stratification based on the Rassi score, with recent studies of its application, was complemented by methods that detect myocardial fibrosis.nbsp;
The current methodology for etiological diagnosis and the consequent implications of trypanonomic treatment deserved a comprehensive and in-depth approach. Also the treatment of patients at risk or with heart failure, arrhythmias and thromboembolic events, based on pharmacological and complementary resources, received special attention. Additional chapters supported the conducts applicable to several special contexts, including t. cruzi/HIV co-infection, risk during surgeries, in pregnant women, in the reactivation of infection after heart transplantation, and others.nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;
Finally, two chapters of great social significance, addressing the structuring of specialized services to care for individuals with the Cardiomyopathy of Chagas disease, and reviewing the concepts of severe heart disease and its medical-labor implications completed this guideline.
Esta diretriz teve como objetivo principal atualizar os conceitos e formular as normas de conduta e evidências científicas que as suportam, quanto ao diagnóstico e tratamento da CDC, com especial ênfase na base de racionalidade que a embasou.
A DC no século XXI mantém padrão epidemiológico de endemicidade em 21 países da América Latina. Investigadores e gestores de países endêmicos e não endêmicos indigitam a necessidade de se adotarem políticas abrangentes, de saúde pública, para controle eficaz da transmissão inter-humanos da infecção pelo T. cruzi, e obter-se nível otimizado de atendimento aos indivíduos já infectados, com foco em oportunização diagnóstica e terapêutica.
Mecanismos patogênicos e fisiopatológicos da CDC foram revisitados após atualização aprofundada e ficou bem consolidada a noção de que necrose e fibrose sejam estimuladas pela persistência parasitária tissular e reação imune adversa, como mecanismos fundamentais, coadjuvados por distúrbios autonômicos e microvasculares. Alguns deles recentemente constituíram alvos potenciais de terapêuticas.
A história natural das fases aguda e crônica foi revista, com realce para a transmissão oral, a forma indeterminada e as síndromes crônicas. Metanálises recentes de estudos observacionais estimaram o risco de evolução a partir das formas aguda e indeterminada e de mortalidade após instalação da cardiomiopatia crônica. Condutas terapêuticas aplicáveis aos indivíduos com a FIDC foram abordadas especificamente. Todos os métodos para detectar alterações estruturais e/ou funcionais com variadas técnicas de imageamento cardíaco também foram revisados, com recomendações de uso nos vários cenários clínicos. Estratificação de risco de mortalidade fundamentada no escore de Rassi, com estudos recentes de sua aplicação, foi complementada por métodos que detectam fibrose miocárdica.
A metodologia atual para diagnóstico etiológico e as consequentes implicações do tratamento tripanossomicida mereceram enfoque abrangente e aprofundado. Também o tratamento de pacientes em risco ou com insuficiência cardíaca, arritmias e eventos tromboembólicos, baseado em recursos farmacológicos e complementares, recebeu especial atenção. Capítulos suplementares subsidiaram as condutas aplicáveis a diversos contextos especiais, entre eles o da co-infecção por T. cruzi/HIV, risco durante cirurgias, em grávidas, na reativação da infecção após transplante cardíacos, e outros.nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;
Por fim, dois capítulos de grande significado social, abordando a estruturação de serviços especializados para atendimento aos indivíduos com a CDC, e revisando os conceitos de cardiopatia grave e suas implicações médico-trabalhistas completaram esta diretriz.nbsp;

In this paper, the piperine (PIP) and eugenol (EUG) organic compounds were used as substrates in olefin metathesis reactions catalyzed by first-generation Grubbs catalyst (G1) - [RuCl2(PCy3)2(=CHPh)], Cy is cyclohexyl and Ph is phenyl, in a one-pot system. The reactions occurred at 50 ºC, for 24, 48, or 96 h using the two substrates simultaneously in the ratio Ru:PIP:EUG of 1:1:1 and 1:10:10 mol. The results were evaluated by GC-MS, discussed in terms of the electronic and steric characteristics of the G1, and the structural proprieties of the substrates. In the Ru:PIP:EUG ratio of 1:1:1 mol, a dimeric species was observed for the olefin metathesis of EUG, in all time studied and in an additional experiment at 70 ºC for 48 h. When the Ru:PIP:EUG ratio was 1:10:10 mol, this dimer was not observed. Isomerization processes also were observed at all temperatures and catalyst:substrates ratio. The reaction yield increased with the raise of substrates amount. There was no cross-metathesis reaction. This fact was attributed to the chelating effect of the double coordination of the PIP to the catalyst.

ABSTRACT An important concern with the use of genetically modified (GM) plants expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal toxins is the deleterious effect on non–target organisms. The predatory stink bug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is used in biological control programs and may be exposed to Bt toxins. This study evaluated the indirect effects of different Cry proteins on P. nigrispinus with the prey Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), fed on simple or pyramided Bt maize genotypes. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three treatments: i) Isohybrid (not Bt), ii) Herculex® (transgenic maize encoding Cry1F protein) and iii) PowerCore® (pyramidal transgenic maize encoding the Cry1F, Cry1A.105, and Cry2Ab2 proteins), which were used to feed S. frugiperda for 48 h. The caterpillars were used as prey by P. nigrispinus females. We evaluated the presence of Cry proteins, consumed prey biomass (predation), oviposition period, number of postures, number of eggs, number of eggs per posture, number of nymphs, egg viability, embryonic period, female longevity and development, and survival rates of immature. The results show that different Cry proteins move through the food chain of P. nigrispinus and provide evidence that the ingestion of three different proteins does not lead to unexpected synergistic effects. However, Cry toxins promoted histopathological changes in midgut cells of P. nigrispinus.

A síndrome stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy (SMART) é uma condição extremamente rara que consiste no aparecimento de sinais e sintomas neurológicos complexos ou estados confusionais, em doentes submetidos a radioterapia cerebral prévia. Encontram-se alterações características na ressonância magnética cerebral que normalizam com a resolução dos sintomas. O presente caso clínico descreve uma doente de 64 anos com antecedentes de radioterapia cerebral e aparecimento de hemiparesia direita de novo, confusão e depressão do estado de consciência, com alterações na ressonância magnética cerebral compatíveis com síndrome SMART. Os autores pretendem alertar para a existência desta síndrome e para o seu eventual subdiagnóstico.
Stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy (SMART) is an extremely rare syndrome that involves the appearance of complex neurological signs and symptoms or confusional states in patients who have undergone brain radiation years earlier. There are characteristic changes in brain magnetic resonance imaging that normalize with the resolution of symptoms. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with a history of brain radiotherapy and the onset of inaugural right hemiparesis, confusion and decreased level of consciousness, presenting brain magnetic resonance imaging changes compatible with the diagnosis of stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy. The authors intend to draw attention to the existence of this syndrome and its possible under-diagnosis.

Catalysis is an important tool in obtaining a range of derivative products from renewable sources, such as ethanol. Solid-state dealumination using ammonium hexafluorosilicate on the BEA zeolite under the treatment at temperature of 190 °C, 70 mol% dealumination in the presence of humidity and washing with buffer solution at 25 °C generated larger pores. The absence of washing procedure for the same sample resulted in pore blockage. Ethanol dehydration reactions showed conversion of 72% (64% ethylene and 8% diethyl ether) for this sample at 300 °C and high weight hourly space velocity (WHSV, 3247 h-1), whereas, at the same temperature but at a low WHSV (57 h-1), the conversion was 88% (49% ethylene and 39% diethyl ether). Dealuminated BEA zeolite presented better diffusion conditions, higher hydrophobicity and generated larger pores. Impregnation with H3PW12O40, H4SiW12O40 and Nb2O5 explained the selectivity, showing that Lewis acid sites from Nb2O5 favored the diethyl ether production.

Abstract: In order to evaluate iron chelate in diets for sows during gestation and lactation and its effects on iron supplementation for piglets, a total of 50 pregnant sows in the third parity order were distributed according to a randomized block design with two treatments: diet without iron chelate supplementation (n=20); diet supplemented with 0.15% of iron chelate (n=30). The litters of sows were distributed into five different treatments: sows without iron chelate supplementation and piglets receiving intramuscular iron-dextran; sows without iron chelate supplementation and piglets receiving oral iron supplementation; sows supplemented with iron chelate and piglets receiving intramuscular iron-dextran; sows supplemented with iron chelate and piglets receiving oral iron supplementation; sows supplemented with iron chelate and piglets without iron supplementation. No influence of dietary supplementation of iron chelate was verified on the productive parameters of the sows. For the piglets, iron-dextran supplementation promoted higher weaning weight in comparison to non-supplemented piglets, although not differing to those received oral iron supplementation. Thus, iron chelate supplementation did not improve the productive parameters of sows, but it increased iron excretion in the feces, thus requiring iron supplementation for the piglets after birth.

Resumo Haemonchus contortus é um nematoide gastrintestinal, responsável por altas taxas de mortalidade em rebanhos de pequenos ruminantes. A resistência dos nematoides aos anti-helmínticos sintéticos está generalizada e requer uma busca contínua por novos compostos bioativos, como as proteínas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial anti-helmíntico da protease purificada do látex de Ficus benjamina contra H. contortus . O látex fresco foi coletado das plantas por pequenas incisões nas hastes verdes e o extrato proteico de látex (EPL) foi obtido. Após o fracionamento do EPL com sulfato de amônio e cromatografia da fração contendo a maior atividade proteolítica da CM-Celulose, uma protease cisteínica (FbP) foi purificada. A FbP tem massa molecular de cerca de 23,97 kDa, a atividade proteolítica foi estável entre pH 6,0 e pH 10 e ao longo de uma ampla faixa de temperatura, com atividade ótima a 60 °C. A FbP inibiu tanto o desenvolvimento quanto o desembainhamento das larvas de H. contortus, com 50% de inibição nas concentrações de 0,26 e 0,79 mg/mL, respectivamente. Concluímos que esta protease cisteínica do látex de F. benjamina, com ação anti-helmíntica contra H. contortus, pode ser uma alternativa promissora para o desenvolvimento de produtos a serem utilizados em programas de controle de parasitos.
Abstract Haemonchus contortus is a gastrointestinal nematode that is responsible for high mortality rates in ruminant herds. The resistance of nematodes to synthetic anthelmintics is widespread and requires a continuous search for new bioactive molecules, such as proteins. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic potential of a protease purified from the latex of Ficus benjamina against H. contortus . Fresh latex was collected from plants via small incisions in the green stems, the rubber was removed by centrifugation, and the latex protein extract (LPE) was obtained. After LPE fractionation with ammonium sulfate and chromatography of the fraction containing the highest proteolytic activity on CM-cellulose, a cysteine protease (FbP) was purified. FbP has a molecular mass of approximately 23.97 kDa, and its proteolytic activity was stable between pH 6.0 and pH 10 and over a broad temperature range, with optimum activity at 60 °C. FbP inhibited both the development and exsheathment of H. contortus larvae, with 50% effective concentrations of 0.26 and 0.79 mg/mL, respectively. We conclude that this cysteine protease from F. benjamina latex with anthelmintic activity against H. contortus could be a promising alternative for the development of products for use in parasite control programmes.
