ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT Background: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) can be caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites. The World Health Organization estimated more than 300 million new global cases of curable STIs among individuals of reproductive age. Infection by Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the most prevalent curable STL Despite the current treatments available, the diagnosis of T. vaginalis can be difficult, and the resistance to the treatment increased concern for the healthcare system. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection among women of reproductive age attending community-based services for cervical screening. Patients and methods: A total of 1477 reproductive-aged women attending 18 Primary Health Care Units in Botucatu, Brazil, from September to October 2012, were enrolled. A structured questionnaire was used for individual face-to-face interviews for obtaining data on sociodemographic, gynecologic, and obstetrics history, sexual and hygiene practices, among others. Cervicovaginal samples were obtained for detection of T. vaginalis by culture using Diamond's medium and microscopic vaginal microbiota classification according to Nugent. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate Odds Ratios (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) for the association between participants’ sociodemographic, behavioral factors, and clinical factors with T. vaginalis infection. Results: Median age of study participants was 33 years (ranging from 18 to 50). The overall prevalence of T. vaginalis infection was 1.3% (n = 20). Several factors were independently associated with T. vaginalis infection, such as self-reporting as black or Pardo for ethnicity (OR = 2.70; 95% CI 1.03–7.08), smoking (OR=3.18; 95% CI 1.23–8.24) and having bacterial vaginosis (OR = 4.01; 95%CI = 1.55–10.38) upon enrollment. A protective effect of higher educational level (having high school degree) was observed (OR = 0.16; 95% CI 0.05–0.53). Abstract Extraction and fractioning of microalgal lipids have been recurrently studied because of the market value of certain lipid families (i.e. carotenoids and xanthophylls) and the opportunity that microalgal oils represent for obtaining biofuels. Most of the methods developed for the total extraction of microalgal lipids require a subsequent separation for the different families (i.e neutral lipids, polar lipids) to be quantified. Moreover, most of them use toxic and expensive solvents. In the present study less toxic solvents that are widely used in the industry, such as hexane, acetone and, ethanol were tested in different orders for the extraction of microalgal biomass of different lipid composition and content (i.e. three different levels of nutritional stress). A comparison of the methods proposed by Bligh and Dyer, Folch and, Hara and Radin is also presented. The new method achieves microalgal total lipid extraction and separation of the lipid families simultaneously.

Resultados Foram incluídos 162 pacientes no presente estudo.
Abstract Objective The immediate referral of patients with risk factors for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) to specialized centers is recommended, thus favoring an early diagnosis and an interdisciplinary management. However, diagnostic errors are frequent, even in referral centers (RCs). We sought to evaluate the performance of the prenatal diagnosis for PAS in a Latin American hospital. Methods A retrospective descriptive study including patients referred due to the suspicion of PAS was conducted. Data from the prenatal imaging studies were compared with the final diagnoses (intraoperative and/or histological). Results A total of 162 patients were included in the present study. The median gestational age at the time of the first PAS suspicious ultrasound was 29 weeks, but patients arrived at the PAS RC at 34 weeks. The frequency of false-positive results at referring hospitals was 68.5%. Sixty-nine patients underwent surgery based on the suspicion of PAS at 35 weeks, and there was a 28.9% false-positive rate at the RC. In 93 patients, the diagnosis of PAS was ruled out at the RC, with a 2.1% false-negative frequency. Conclusion The prenatal diagnosis of PAS is better at the RC. However, even in these centers, false-positive results are common; therefore, the intraoperative confirmation of the diagnosis of PAS is essential.

Taking advantage of the energy contained in the biosolids generated in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is one of the processes of greatest interest due to the opportunity to obtain an energy resources from a waste. The aim of this research was to analyze the environmental sustainability use of biosolids generated in a wastewater-treatment plant for energy-production by fluidized-bed gasification under exergy analysis. The energy-production system was based on previous studies of sustainable-emergy alternatives using biosolids. Sustainability of the process was evaluated by identifying stages in the energy-production system (from drying application to electricity generation) where it is possible to reduce useful energy losses as well as identifying the value of waste streams within the system through exergy analysis. It was illustrated the destroyed exergy and the efficiency by stage and by product in order to assess the effects of inefficiencies in the process sustainability. The mixture of biosolids with coal was identified as a highly sustainable stage of the process, as it presents the highest index of exergy sustainability (0.99), in contrast to the stages of energy-transformation (turbine) and gas-cleaning, which efficiencies are 0.17 and 0.4, respectively. Energy-transformation and gas-cleaning stages are of interest in terms of an improved energy recovery process, making it more efficient by applying new technologies and/or using the waste streams that have high energy potentials.

Abstract Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreber) is a temperate perennial forage important in livestock production systems due to its high yield in places with environmental and edaphic restrictions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic performance of ten naturalized tall fescue populations in sub-humid semi-arid environments of Argentina. The phenotypic traits plant height, crown diameter, number of tillers, and dry biomass production were estimated during three years. The data were examined through analysis of variance, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and population × environment interaction analysis. The results suggest that there is high phenotypic variability among the ten naturalized tall fescue populations. A genotype × environment interaction was recorded for all traits (p < 0.05). The correlation analysis showed that the plant height trait could be useful to select indirectly higher plants in dry biomass production in individual and annual cuts. Populations 3243-645 and 3250-BAI stood out in the analyzed traits presenting stability throughout the years. The high phenotypic variability found is valuable to be explored in the future in the breeding program and to identify and select superior genotypes within populations.

Abstract This review article characterizes the green inhibitors applied to control corrosion in metals and maintain the safety and profitability of the production process, since the corrosive phenomenon is insoluble, but can be mitigated with time. For this article, some case studies related to corrosion problems in metals are included, such as the accident in Aloha and the explosion in Guadalajara. Subsequently, the generalities of inhibitors for corrosion control are named, and the physisorption and chemisorption processes are compared. Then, inorganic, organic, synthetic, and green inhibitors are analyzed. The latter seek to replace the synthetic ones, for example, through aloe vera and other plant materials.

Abstract There isn’t yet a clear definition for systemic inflammation in COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), but its recognition has been based on studies that show an increase in the plasma concentration of various inflammatory markers, such as the c-reactive protein (CRP), and in recent years, also the microalbuminuria has been suggested. The purposes of this work were to determine the microalbuminuria and CRP as potential biomarkers of systemic inflammation. We enrolled patients with stable COPD and non-COPD smokers diagnosed through spirometry; older than 40 years without AHT (arterial hypertension) or diabetes type I or II, between October 2017 and March 2019. In both groups, a venous blood sample was collected to determine high-sensitivity CRP and 3 urine samples were taken to determine microalbuminuria, calculating the mean value. At least two out of three determinations between 30 and 300 mg/g of urine creatinine were considered to be significant albuminuria. The high-sensitivity CRP was considered positive with a value ≥ 5 mg/L. Of the 47 analyzed patients, a mean albuminuria of 13.91 ± 5.04 was obtained in the COPD group, in comparison with 2.50 ± 0.36 in the control group. Also, the high-sensitivity CRP mean values were compared, showing 5.06 ± 2.24 in COPD patients and 2.46 ± 0.51 in the control group. Both variables showed non-statistically significant differences between the study groups (p = 0.058 for mean albuminuria and p = 0.330 for high-sensitivity CRP).

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION : Seroprevalence studies allow monitoring the circulation of SARS-CoV-2, providing information to evalúate public health measures. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion and evolution of seropositivity in high circulation points in the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) and clinical and epidemiological characteristics of seropositive individuals from April to October 2020. METHODS : A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted during six rounds, using rapid serological testing together with an epidemiological data survey. A convenience sample was selected in three CABA railway stations considered as high bi-directional traffic points in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). RESULTS : 7,339 people participated. The seropositive proportion was 0.6% (95%CI: 0.2-0.9) in the first round, and rose to 5.6% in the last one (95%CI: 4.3-7). Initially, seropositivity increased in CABA residents and those living in the southern part of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region. Having presented symptoms and history of contact with COVID-19 cases were the only variables found to be related to positive IgG results (p<0.05). Among seropositive participantes, 56.1% (n=97) had no symptoms and 78.4% (n=134) didn't receive a COVID-19 diagnosis in the acute stage. DISCUSSION : Seropositivity increased between rounds, according to the epidemiological situation in the area of residence. Epidemiological characteristics, such as the proportion of seropositive individuals with no history of symptoms, reaffirm the importance of public health and social measures.

Abstract Introduction: The aim was to evaluate metabolic parameters in a group of patients older than 65 years old compared to younger adults at three and six months after bariatric surgery (BS). Material and Methods: Prospective analytic study of a cohort of 40 patients under BS since June, 2015 to March, 2018. Participants were divided into two groups (Group A: ≥65; B: <65 years old). Anthropometrics and metabolic parameters were assessed before and 3 and 6 months after BS. The excess weight loss percentage (EWLP) and the Triglycerides/HDLc (TAG/HDLc) ratio, as a marker of insulin resistance, were also evaluated. A p <0.05 was statistically significant. Results: Forty patients were under BS, we included thirty six: 21 patients were at group A (median age: 59, RIQ: 48-61 years old) and 15 at group B (median age 67, RIQ: 66-69 years old), the prevalence of patients with type 2 diabetes was 53% (n=8) in group B vs. 43% (n=9) at group A. After 3 and 6 months of BS, we found no statistical difference between groups in weight loss and the EWLP and the decrease in fasting blood glucose (FBG), HbAc1% levels but a significant rise in the levels of HDLc in group B. We observed a statistically decrease in the TAG/HDLc ratio and a positive correlation between HbA1c% and levels of FBG, HDLc and the TAG/HDLc ratio in group B. Moreover, we found a reduction in the use of antidiabetics and lipid lowering drugs in this age group. Conclusions: The metabolic effects of BS achieved significant benefits in the ≥65 y/o cohort, especially by decreasing insulin resistance, even in those patients without diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract A new species of Trichostrongyloidea (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae), Hassalstrongylus lauroi n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the small intestine of the rodent Hylaeamys seuanezi in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil (Igrapiúna, state of Bahia). The genus Hassalstrongylus includes 17 species, which parasitize rodents occurring in the Neotropical and Nearctic regions. It differs from the genus Stilestrongylus through its smaller number of ridges in the synlophe and through the size of the genital cone. The main taxonomic characteristics of this new species are the subsymmetrical caudal bursa of type 2-2-1, ray 8 branching out at the base of the dorsal trunk, right lobe smaller than the left, and rays 4 and 5 of robust nature. In addition, the ornamental ray 5 and the robustness of ray 4 on the male caudal bursa, along with the modification of the ridges of the posterior end of the female, allow us to consider the specimens found to be a new species.

ABSTRACT The SARS-CoV-2, a newly identified β-coronavirus, is the causative agent of the third large-scale pandemic from the last two decades. The outbreak started in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei province in China. The patients presented clinical symptoms of dry cough, fever, dyspnea, and bilateral lung infiltrates on imaging. By February 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) named the disease as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Coronavirus Study Group (CSG) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) recognized and designated this virus as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The SARS-CoV-2 uses the same host receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), used by SARS-CoV to infect humans. One hypothesis of SARSCoV-2 origin indicates that it is likely that bats serve as reservoir hosts for SARSCoV-2, being the intermediate host not yet determined. The predominant route of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is from human to human. As of May 10th 2020, the number of worldwide confirmed COVID-19 cases is over 4 million, while the number of global deaths is around 279.000 people. The United States of America (USA) has the highest number of COVID-19 cases with over 1.3 million cases followed by Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Russia, France and Germany with over 223.000, 218.000, 215.000, 209.000, 176.000, and 171.000 cases, respectively.

Abstract In Colombia there are no guidelines for diagnosis and management of patients with short stature and for the use of recombinant human growth hormone, mainly caused by the diversity of training centers in pediatric endocrinology. In response to this situation, the Asociación Colegio Colombiana de Endocrinología Pediátrica leds the first colombian short stature expert committee in order to standardize the use of human recombinant growth hormone. This work had the participation and endorsement of a consortium of clinical experts representing the Sociedad Colombiana de Pediatría, Secretaría Distrital de Salud de Bogotá- Subred Integrada de Servicios de Salud Suroccidente, Fundación Universitaria Sanitas, Universidad de los Andes and some public and private health institutions in the country, in addition to the participation of methodological experts from the Instituto Global de Excelencia Clínica Keralty. By reviewing the literature and with the best available evidence, we proposed to unify definitions, a diagnostic algorithm, biochemical and dynamic tests with their reference parameters, a description of the considerations about growth hormone use among the indications approved by regulatory agency for medications and food in Colombia and finally a proposal for an informed consent and a medication fact sheet available for parents and patients.
