Environmental influences on the ichthyoplankton in hypersaline estuaries located in a Semiarid Northeastern Brazilian coast

RESUMO Os estuários hipersalinos são comumente encontrados na região semiárida da costa nordestina brasileira. No entanto, a utilização desses estuários pelos primeiros estágios de vida dos peixes é pouco documentada. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de fatores ambientais sobre o ictioplâncton e descrever sua variação espacial e temporal em dois estuários (Tubarão e Casqueira). As amostragens foram diurnas em quatro excursões realizadas em dois meses da estação seca (novembro e dezembro de 2017) e dois meses da estação chuvosa (maio e julho de 2018). Um total de 423 larvas representando 30 espécies (14 famílias) e 2.762 ovos (cinco famílias) foram coletadas. Embora as estruturas das comunidades fossem semelhantes em ambos os estuários, houve fortes diferenças de variação sazonal, com maiores abundâncias observadas durante a estação seca. A baixa precipitação foi o principal fator ambiental que afetou o ictioplâncton em ambos os estuários. Outros fatores, como profundidade, temperatura da água e largura do canal, também foram preditoras para a distribuição de ovos e larvas. O ictioplâncton foi dominado por espécies marinhas dependentes em ambos os estuários, representando 76% dos indivíduos. A presença de estágios iniciais de espécies tipicamente marinhas sugere que ambientes hipersalinos fornecem áreas de berçário importantes e desempenham um papel essencial para algumas espécies de peixes costeiros.
ABSTRACT Hypersaline estuaries are commonly found in the Semiarid Northeast Brazilian coast. However, the utilization of these estuaries by early life stages of fishes is less well documented. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on the ichthyoplankton, and to describe their spatial and temporal variation in two estuaries (Tubarão and Casqueira). The sampling were diurnally in four excursions carried out during two dry-season months (November and December 2017) and two rainy-season months (May and July 2018). A total of 423 larvae representing 30 species (14 families) and 2,762 eggs (five families) were collected. Although the community structures were similar in both estuaries, there was strong seasonal variation, with higher abundances observed during the dry season. Low rainfall was the primary environmental driver affecting ichthyoplankton in both estuaries. Other environmental factors, such as depth, water temperature, and channel width, were also predictor variables for the distribution of eggs and larvae. The ichthyoplankton was dominated by marine estuarine-dependent species in both estuaries, accounting for 76% of individuals. The presence of the early life stages of typically marine species suggests that hypersaline environments provide important nursery areas and play an essential role for some coastal fish species.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents. Materials and Methods: A web-based survey was sent to 468 Brazilian urology residents from postgraduate years (PGY) 3 to 5 to collect data on clinical practice and training after 4 months of COVID-19. We also assessed health-related and behavior changes, rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2, deployment to the front line of COVID-19, residents’ concerns, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE). Results: Massive reductions in elective and emergency patient consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries were reported across the country, affecting PGY 3 to 5 alike. Most in-person educational activities were abolished. The median damage to the urological training expected for 2020 was 6.0 [3.4 – 7.7], on a scale from 0 to 10, with senior residents estimating a greater damage (P< 0.001). Educational interventions developed included online case-based discussions, subspeciality conferences and lectures, and grand rounds. Most senior residents favored extending residency to compensate for training loss and most younger residents favored no additional training (p< 0.001). Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (43.8%), reduced physical activity (68.6%), increased alcoholic intake (44.9%) and cigarette consumption (53.6%), worsening of sexual life (25.2%) and feelings of sadness or depression (48,2%). Almost half were summoned to work on the COVID-19 front-line and 24.4% had COVID-19. Most residents had inadequate training to deal with COVID-19 patients and most reported a shortage of PPE. Residents’ concerns included the risk of contaminating family members, being away from residency program, developing severe COVID-19 and overloading colleagues. Conclusions: COVID-19 had a massive impact in Brazilian urology residents´ training, health and lifestyle behavior, which may reflect what happened in other medical specialties. Studies should confirm these findings to help developing strategies to mitigate residents’ losses.

Abstract In this study the solid-state fermentation for production of cellulolytic enzymes by the fungus Gelatoporia subvermispora was optimized. The enzyme activities on filter paper, exo-cellulase, endo-cellulase and xylanase were determined. A Plackett-Burman design (PB) was used to determine the most significant variables (moisture content of substrate, inoculum density, corn steep liquor concentration, pH and peptone concentration) in the enzyme production for each substrate (sugarcane bagasse, sewage sludge and rice straw). The highest value for filter paper activity was obtained using sugarcane bagasse as substrate. The sewage sludge was an excellent medium for the production of xylanase and exo-cellulases. The endo-cellulase activity was similar in all substrates tested. This is the first report of the Gelatoporia genus for the production of cellulolytic enzymes, being a promising strain for this purpose.

RESUMO Objetivo: Vitamina D assumiu um papel central na pesquisa e tratamento da esclerose múltipla (EM). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os níveis séricos de vitamina D de pacientes com EM e controles que residem em uma área tropical. Métodos: Foram analisados dados de 535 pacientes com EM e 350 indivíduos controle em 14 cidades próximas ao Trópico de Capricórnio. Resultados: O valor médio da determinação de 25-OH vitamina D foi 26,07 ± 10,27 ng/mL para controles e 28,03 ± 12,19 ng/mL para pacientes com EM. Não houve correlação entre os níveis de vitamina D e o grau de incapacidade ao longo da duração da doença. Conclusão: Pelo menos na região que cerca o Trópico de Capricórnio, os níveis séricos de vitamina D estão entre valores de 20 a 30 ng/mL tanto para controles quanto para pacientes com EM.
ABSTRACT Objective: Vitamin D has taken center stage in research and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The objective of the present study was to assess the serum vitamin D levels of a large population of patients with MS and controls living in a restricted tropical area. Methods: Data from 535 patients with MS and 350 control subjects were obtained from 14 cities around the Tropic of Capricorn. Results: The mean serum 25-OH vitamin D level was 26.07 ± 10.27 ng/mL for the control subjects, and 28.03 ± 12.19 ng/mL for patients with MS. No correlation was observed between vitamin D levels and the disability of patients over the disease duration. Conclusion: At least for the region around the Tropic of Capricorn, serum levels of vitamin D typically are within the range of 20 to 30 ng/mL for controls and patients with MS.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar la práctica de las enfermeras que actúan en la red municipal de salud de Ribeirão Preto, Brasil, en relación a la promoción de la lactancia materna para gestantes y/o madres adolescentes. Material y método: Estudio descriptivo, cualitativo, realizado en la red básica de salud de Ribeirão Preto, Brasil, con 12 enfermeras, entre julio y agosto de 2009, por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas y de observación. Se analizaron los datos de acuerdo con la técnica de análisis de contenido, modalidade temática. Resultados: Iden tificamos las categorías "trabajo centrado en la técnica, según lo recomendado y el biológico", "el servicio de salud en el cuidado diario para las mujeres embarazadas y/o madres adolescentes" y "relación profesional entre el profesional y la mujer embarazada y/o madre adolescente". Las enfermeras enfrentan en su práctica el desafío de la transformación de la asistencia centrada en el procedimiento para la atención focalizada en el usuario. Enfatizan la preocupación por desarrollar una relación de confianza basada en la escucha y en la incorporación de la dimención social y la subjetiva de las gestantes y/o madres adolescentes. Conclusión: Es necesario la capa citación y educación permanente sobre lactancia materna, procurando un nuevo perfil de los enfermeros para la atención integral de las necesidades de las adolescentes.
ABSTRACT Objective: To identify practices performed by nurses in the Municipal Health Department of Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, in terms of breastfeeding promotion for pregnant women and/or adolescent mothers. Method: A descriptive and qualitative study was conducted with 12 nurses from July to August 2009 by means of semi-structured interviews and observations. The data was analyzed using the content analysis technique. Results: We identified the following categories: "Work based on technique as recommended and biological practices", "Role of the Health service in daily care for pregnant women and/or teenage mothers" and "Professional relationship between nurses and pregnant women and/or adolescent mothers". Nurses face the challenge of changing their procedure-based approach and shifting towards a care provision centered on the patient. They express their concern to develop a trusting relationship with pregnant women and/or teenage mothers based on listening and incorporating social and subjective issues. Conclusion: It is necessary to continuously train and educate in breastfeeding in order to develop a new profile for nurses capable of providing comprehensive care and meeting the needs of adolescents.
RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar a prática das enfermeiras atuantes na rede municipal de saúde de Ribeirão Preto, SP, rela tiva à promoção do aleitamento materno para gestantes e/ou mães adolescentes. Material e método: Pesquisa descritiva, qualitativa, realizada na rede básica de saúde de Ribeirão Preto, com 12 enfermeiras, em julho e agosto de 2009, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada e observação. Os dados foram analisados na modalida de temática da análise de conteúdo. Resultados: Identificamos as categorias "trabalho centrado na técnica, no recomendado e no biológico", "cotidiano do serviço de saúde na atenção às gestantes e/ou mães adolescentes" e "relação profissional de saúde e gestante e/ou mãe adolescente". As enfermeiras enfrentam o desafio da transfor mação da atenção centrada no procedimento em uma atenção focalizado no usuário. Ressaltam a preocupação em desenvolver uma relação de confiança, baseada na escuta e em incorporar questões relacionadas a dimensões sociais e subjetivas das gestantes e/ou mães adolescentes. Conclusão: São necessárias capacitação e educação permanentes em aleitamento materno, visando a um novo perfil de enfermeiros para a atenção integral das necessidades das adolescentes.

A novel carbon composite was prepared from a mixture of coffee waste and clay with inorganic:organic ratio of 1.3 (CC-1.3). The mixture was pyrolysed at 700 °C. Considering the application of this adsorbent for removal of anionic dyes, the CC-1.3 was treated with a 6 mol L-1 HCl for 24 h to obtain ACC-1.3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption curves, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used for characterisation of CC-1.3 and ACC-1.3 carbon adsorbents. The adsorbents were effectively utilised for removal of reactive blue 19 (RB-19) and reactive violet 5 (RV-5) textile dyes from aqueous solutions. The maximum amounts of RB-19 dye adsorbed at 25 °C are 63.59 (CC-1.3) and 110.6 mg g-1 (ACC-1.3), and 54.34 (CC-1.3) and 94.32 mg g-1 (ACC-1.3) for RV-5 dye. Four simulated dye-house effluents were used to test the application of the adsorbents for treatment of effluents.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJETIVOS: Foram avaliados os efeitos do uso de células tronco da medula óssea (CTM) e do plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) na regeneração de nervos periféricos, utilizando um modelo estabelecido de regeneração de nervo ciático em ratos. MÉTODOS: Um defeito nervoso de 10 mm foi reconstruído com a utilização de um tubo de silicone preenchido com CTM, PRP ou ambos. O grupo controle recebeu somente o tubo de silicone. Foi realizado ainda um quinto grupo no qual o intervalo foi reconstruído utilizando o segmento ressecado do nervo. A função motora foi testada seis semanas após a cirurgia utilizando teste de marcha. Após o teste motor, os ratos foram anestesiados, o nervo ciático e o tubo foram ressecados e foi realizada microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. RESULTADOS: A análise quantitativa demonstra uma melhora na recuperação funcional no grupo CTM em comparação com os demais grupos. Regeneração nervosa foi demonstrada no grupo CTM por microscopia eletrônica de trasmissão com uma recuperação praticamente completa da anatomia neural. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados sugerem que o uso de CTM associado com a técnica de tubulização promove uma satisfatória recuperação da função motora e regeneração nervosa.
OBJECTIVES: The effects of the use of bone marrow stem cells (MSC) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on peripheral nerves regeneration were assessed by using an established model of sciatic nerve regeneration in rats. METHODS: A 10-mm nervous defect was reconstructed by using a silicone tube filled with MSC, PRP or both. The control group received only the silicone tube. A fifth group was also set, in which the interval was reconstructed by using a dried segment of the nerve. Motor function was tested six weeks after surgery, by means of a gait test. After motor test, the rats were anesthetized, the sciatic nerve and the tube were dried, and the transmission electronic microscopy was performed. RESULTS: The quantitative analysis shows an improved functional recovery in MSC group compared to the other groups. Nervous regeneration was reported for MSC group by means of transmission electronic microscopy with an almost full recovery of the neural anatomy. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the use of MSC combined with tubing technique yields a satisfactory recovery of motor function and nervous regeneration.
