From the natural product 4-(4'-O-acetyl-α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzylisothiocyanate (1), isolated from the flowers of Moringa oleifera Lam (Moringaceae), four new semisynthetic derivatives, N-[4-(4'-O-acetyl-α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzyl]-2-(pyridinil-4-carbonil)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (3), 4-(4'-O-acetyl-2',3'-dimesyloxy-α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzylisothiocyanate (4), N-[(4'-O-acetyl-α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzyl]hydrazinecarbothioamide (5), 4-[4'-O-acetyl-2',3'-O-bis(decanoiloxy)-α-L-rhamnosyloxy]benzylisothiocianate (6), and the known compound 4-(2',3',4'-O-triacetyl-α-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzylisothiocyanate (2), were obtained. All compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against the tumor cell lines SF-295, HL-60, HCT-116 e PC-3. The natural product 1 and the semisynthetic derivatives 2 and 4 were the most active compounds (IC50 from16.0 to 3.7 µmol L-1) against all tumor cell lines.

RESUMO A seletividade de cinco inseticidas utilizados em pomares de pessegueiro foi avaliada sobre larvas do predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) por meio de bioensaio conduzido em semicampo. O bioensaio baseou-se na contagem do número de larvas capturadas após liberação em plantas de pessegueiro tratadas com os inseticidas (% de ingrediente ativo na calda) deltametrina (0,001), fentiona (0,050), fosmete (0,100), lufenurom (0,005) e malationa (0,200). Para captura das larvas nas plantas tratadas foram utilizados dez cartões-isca contendo ovos de Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), sendo cinco fixados na copa e cinco fixados no solo ao redor do caule. Uma barreira de proteção composta por chapa de aço galvanizado foi utilizada em cada planta para evitar a perda de larvas. O número de larvas alimentando-se nos cartões foi mensurado durante quatro dias. Em função do número de larvas capturadas, o efeito de cada inseticida foi calculado e classificado nas categorias de toxicidade segundo a “International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants” (IOBC). Baseado no efeito observado, o regulador de crescimento lufenurom foi inofensivo, enquanto os neurotóxicos deltametrina e malationa foram pouco tóxicos, e fentiona e fosmete foram moderadamente tóxicos a larvas de C. externa em condições de semicampo. Desta forma, lufenurom deve ser recomendado no manejo integrado de pragas a fim de se preservar esta espécie de predador em pomares de pessegueiro.

ABSTRACT The selectivity of five insecticides, regularly used in peach farming, was assessed for larvae of the predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) by means of bioassay in semi-field conditions. The bioassay was based on the counting of captured larvae after release in peach trees treated with the insecticides (% of active ingredient in spray liquid): deltamethrin (0.001), fenthion (0.050), phosmet (0.100), lufenuron (0.005) and malathion (0.200). Bait-cards with eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were used to capture larvae from treated plants; five of them were fixed in plant canopy and five others left on the soil around stem. A protective barrier made up of galvanized steel sheet was used for each plant to avoid loss of larvae. The number of larvae feeding on the bait-cards was measured for four days. According to the number of captured larvae, each insecticide effect was estimated and classified into toxicity categories as stated by the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC). Based on observations, the insect growth regulator lufenuron was harmless, while the neurotoxins deltamethrin and malathion were slightly harmful; and lastly, fenthion and phosmet were moderately harmful to C. externa larvae in semi-field conditions. Thus, lufenuron should be recommended for integrated pest management, since it would preserve this predator species in peach orchards.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a seletividade de dezenove agrotóxicos utilizados na cultura do pessegueiro sobre ovos e pupas do predador Chrysoperla externa em condições laboratoriais (temperatura 25±1ºC, umidade relativa 70±10% e fotofase 14 horas). Os agrotóxicos foram pulverizados diretamente sobre ovos e pupas por meio de uma torre de Potter, utilizando a máxima dosagem recomendada para a cultura do pessegueiro. Foi avaliada a viabilidade de ovos e pupas, além da fecundidade e fertilidade de adultos emergidos de pupas tratadas. Os agrotóxicos foram classificados para ovos em função da redução na eclosão e, para pupas, em função do efeito total, conforme a escala de toxicidade proposta pela IOBC. A maioria dos agrotóxicos avaliados (8 inseticidas, 8 fungicidas e 2 herbicidas) se mostrou inócua (classe 1) a ovos e pupas, com redução na eclosão de larvas e efeito total em pupas inferiores a 30%. A exceção se deu para o inseticida óleo mineral, que reduziu a eclosão de larvas em 69,55% quando pulverizado em ovos e proporcionou efeito total em pupas de 36,22%, sendo classificado como levemente nocivo (classe 2) a ovos e pupas de C. externa

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of nineteen pesticides used in peach orchards on eggs and pupae of the predator Chrysoperla externa in bioassays carried under laboratory conditions (temperature of 25±1ºC, relative humidity 70±10% and 14 hours photophase). The pesticides were directly sprayed on eggs and pupae trough a Potter tower using the maximum recommended dosage for peach orchards. It was evaluated eggs and pupae viability, in addition to fecundity and fertility of adults emerged from treated pupae. The pesticides were classified to eggs according to reduction in eggs hatch, and to pupae according to the total effect into IOBC toxicity categories. Most of pesticides evaluated (8 insecticides, 8 fungicides and 2 herbicides) were harmless (category 1) to eggs and pupae, with a reduction in eggs hatch and total effect to pupae lower than 30%, except for the insecticide mineral oil, which reduced eggs hatch in 69.55% and caused a total effect of 36.22% in pupae, being therefore classified as slightly harmful (category 2) to eggs and pupae of C. externa

Dentro de las estrategias de manejo integrado de plagas (MIP), la inducción de resistencia de la planta hospedera es una opción de control, siendo el silicio un factor que puede aumentar el grado de resistencia al ataque de plagas de insectos. En el desarrollo vegetativo de los cultivares de caña de azúcar RB72454 (moderada resistencia) y SP801842 (susceptible), tratados y no tratados con silicio (Si) fueron infestadas con adultos Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) y revisados después de 60 días. La acumulación de silicio aumentó en el cultivar susceptible, lo que resulta en un contenido de silicio que no fue significativamente diferente que la del cultivar moderadamente resistente sin tratar. El número de orificios en el cultivar susceptible cultivado en el suelo tratado con silicio fue similar al del cultivar de moderada resistencia. La aplicación de silicio promueve el engrosamiento de la cutícula y la acumulación de cristales en los estomas de las hojas.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include factors that induce host plant resistance. Silicon may increase plant resistance to attack by insect pests. In a greenhouse, two sugarcane cultivars RB72454 (moderately resistant) and SP801842 (susceptible), treated and untreated with silicon (Si) were infested with adult Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and checked after 60 days. The accumulation of silicon increased in the susceptible cultivar, resulting in a silicon content that was not significantly different than that of the untreated moderately resistant cultivar. The number of holes in the susceptible cultivar grown in silicon-treated soil was similar to that of the moderately resistant cultivar. Silicon application promotes cuticle thickening and the accumulation of crystals on the leaf stomata.

RESUMO Novas evidências sugerem que o cerebelo apresenta alterações estruturais e funcionais nos transtornos psiquiátricos. Objetivo: Medir o volume do cerebelo e de suas sub-regiões em indivíduos portadores de transtornos psiquiátricos e relacionar tais achados aos sintomas. Métodos: Foi realizada a identificação de pacientes com diferentes graus de prejuízo cognitivo proveniente de um estudo populacional (Epidemiologia do Idoso - UNIFESP), pacientes com transtorno do estresse pós-traumático proveniente de outro estudo populacional e portadores de transtorno bipolar proveniente de um ambulatório especializado (Universidade Federal da Bahia). Todos os sujeitos foram submetidos à ressonância magnética estrutural de 1.5T. As medidas de volume, assim como os sintomas medidos por escalas psicométricas foram comparadas entre pacientes e controles. Resultados: Foi observado que o volume do cerebelo está reduzido nos portadores de prejuízo cognitivo sem demência e com demência, no transtorno do estresse pós-traumático e no transtorno bipolar quando comparados aos controles. Na demência e no transtorno do estresse pós-traumático o volume do hemisfério cerebelar esquerdo e do vérmis estão reduzidos. No transtorno bipolar os volumes de ambos os hemisférios e do vérmis estão reduzidos. Nos dois primeiros estudos estas reduções correlacionaram com os sintomas. Conclusão: A natureza exata do envolvimento do cerebelo nos processos mentais ainda não é compreendida. Entretanto, anormalidades na estrutura cerebelar e em suas funções têm sido relatadas em algumas dessas doenças. Pesquisas futuras, com amostras maiores, ainda são necessárias para esclarecer tais achados e investigar se são importantes para o tratamento e prognóstico.

ABSTRACT. New evidence suggests that the cerebellum has structural and functional abnormalities in psychiatric disorders. Objective: In this research, the goal was to measure the volume of the cerebellum and its subregions in individuals with psychiatric disorders and to relate these findings to their symptoms. Methods: Patients with different degrees of cognitive impairment (Epidemiology of the Elderly - UNIFESP) and patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from population studies were analyzed. Also, patients with bipolar disorder from an outpatient clinic (Center for the Study of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Universidade Federal da Bahia) were recruited for this study. All subjects underwent a 1.5T structural magnetic resonance scan. Volumetric measures and symptom measurements, by psychometric scales, were performed and compared between patients and controls. Results: The cerebellum volume was reduced in patients with cognitive impairment without dementia and with dementia, in patients with PTSD, and in patients with bipolar disorder compared to controls. In dementia and PTSD, the left cerebellar hemisphere and vermis volume were reduced. In bipolar disorder, volumes of both hemispheres and the vermis were reduced. In the first two studies, these cerebellar volumetric reductions correlated with symptoms of the disease. Conclusion: The exact nature of cerebellar involvement in mental processes is still not fully understood. However, abnormalities in cerebellar structure and its functions have been reported in some of these diseases. Future studies with larger samples are needed to clarify these findings and investigate whether they are important for treatment and prognosis.

Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram a obtenção e caracterização do óleo essencial de folhas de pimenta longa Piper hispidinervum, e avaliação de seu efeito no comportamento e/ou mortalidade da lagarta-do-cartucho do milho Spodoptera frugiperda. O óleo essencial foi obtido pela técnica "arraste a vapor d'água", utilizando-se de um aparelho de Clevenger modificado, e posteriormente submetido, à análise por CG-EM e CG. Foram realizados testes de ingestão e contato tópico em lagartas de 1º e 3º ínstar. Os resultados constataram que o óleo essencial de pimenta-longa possui atividade inseticida sobre S. frugiperda, causando redução alimentar e mortalidade, sendo o safrol (82%) seu constituinte majoritário. Verificou-se mortalidade no teste de ingestão em lagartas de 1º ínstar com CL50 = 16,2 mg/mL e para lagartas de 3º ínstar a CL50 = 9,4 mg/mL com redução alimentar CD50 = 0,72 mg/mL; e de toxicidade aguda no teste de contato tópico com DL50 = 277,91 μg/lagarta, após o intervalo de tempo de 96 horas, sendo também observados sintomas de neurotoxicidade, como o efeito knock-down.

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oil from the long-pepper leaves (Piper hispidinervum) and its effect on the comportment and/or mortality of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). The essential oil was obtained by steam stream distillation, using the modified Clevenger apparatus, the chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS and GC. Tests of ingestion and topical application in fall armyworm of 1 st and 3 rd ínstar were made. The results showed that the long-pepper essential oil has insecticide activity on S. frugiperda, causing mortality and food reduction, and safrole (82%) as its majority constituent. Mortality was found in the ingestion test in larvae of 1 st ínstar LC50 = 16.2 mg/mL for larvae of 3 rd ínstar LC50 = 9.4 mg/mL, with reduced food CD50 = 0.72 mg/mL; and acute toxicity test of the contact topic with LD50 = 277.91 μg/larvae, after an interval of 96 hours, neurotoxicity symptoms were also observed, as knock-down effect.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de silício em parâmetros biológicos e na morfometria de C. atlantica. O bioensaio foi conduzido em sala climatizada com temperatura de 20ºC, 70% UR e fotofase de 12 horas, com delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado. Fêmeas adultas obtidas após a última ecdise ninfal foram transferidas para as unidades experimentais (gaiolas de PVC) e, entre o 4º e 5º dia reprodutivo, a fêmea foi retirada e dentre os descendentes produzidos nesse período, um foi escolhido aleatoriamente para a condução do ensaio. Nos tratamentos com a aplicação de diferentes doses do ácido silícico, ocorreram prolongamento da fase ninfal e redução na performance biológica, afetando assim o ciclo biológico do pulgão. Em relação à capacidade reprodutiva do inseto, obtiveram-se, para os tratamentos com aplicação do ácido silícico, valores distintos da testemunha que apresentou número elevado de ninfas/fêmea. Em relação à morfometria, dentre os quinze caracteres avaliados, apenas a largura da cabeça e o comprimento total da antena de C. atlantica, que foram mantidos em plantas com aplicação de silício, diferiram estatisticamente da testemunha.

This research aimed to study the effect of silicon in biology and morphology of C. atlantica. The bioassay was carried out in environmental chamber (20ºC, 70% RH and 12 photophase) in a completely randomized design. Adult females were transferred to experimental units (PVC cages) after the last nymphal ecdysis and were removed from these sites between the 4th and 5th reproductive day. From this offspring, one specimen was randomly chosen to take part the experiment one observed an increase in nymphal phase and a decrease of aphid fitness in treatments with different levels of silicon. In relation to the reproductive capacity of the insect one gotten for the treatment with application the treatment with application silicic acid distinct values of the witness presented high number of nymphs/female. Fifteen characters were surveyed in the morphometry analysis, from which the width of the head and the total length and of antenna of C. atlantica were kept in plants with silicon application differed statistically from control.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da aplicação de silício na indução de resistência de Pinus taeda L. ao pulgão-gigante-do-pinus Cinara atlantica (Wilson). Foram realizados testes com chance de escolha em plantas com e sem aplicação de silício, onde foi avaliada a preferência e a capacidade reprodutiva dos afídeos. Os testes foram realizados em laboratório (T: 20ºC; UR: 70%; fotofase: 12 horas), em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos e dez repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - (sem aplicação de silício); T2 - uma dose de 0,01g de silício e T3 - quatro doses de 0,01g de silício, com intervalos de cinco dias entre as aplicações. As aplicações das doses foram via solo. Vinte dias após a aplicação, realizaram-se os testes de preferência e de capacidade reprodutiva com chance de escolha, utilizando-se como arena placas de Petri com ramos de pinus e gaiolas de PVC com mudas de pinus em tubetes. Em cada arena foram liberados 20 pulgões adultos. As avaliações em placas de Petri foram realizadas aos 40 e 90 minutos e às 4, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 e 72 horas após a liberação dos insetos; em gaiolas as avaliações foram realizadas no primeiro, segundo, terceiro, quarto e sétimo dia, estendendo-se este período por mais três semanas. A aplicação de silício influenciou negativamente a preferência e a capacidade reprodutiva de C. atlantica.

This research aimed to study the effect of silicon as a resistance inducer in P. taeda L. to C. atlantica (Wilson). Preference and reproductive rate tests were performed in plants of P. taeda with and without silicon application. The experiment was carried out in controlled environmental chamber (T: 20ºC; UR: 70%; fotofase: 12h), in a completely random design, and consisted of three treatments and ten replications. The treatments were: T1- substratum standard (without silicon application), T2 - substratum standard + one dose of 0,01g de silicon, T3 - substratum standard + four doses of 0,01g de silicon, with intervals of five days between the applications. Twenty days after the application, a free choice preference test was performed in two different arenas: Petri dishes with pine branches and PVC cages with pine seedlings. Twenty adult aphids were released in each arena. Petri dishes were observed at 40 and 90 minutes, then 4, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 72 hours after release. Pine seedlings in PVC cages were examined in the first, second, third, fourth and seventh days, followed by a weekly record on the next three weeks. Silicon application showed a negative response to preference and reproductive capacity in adults of C. atlantica.

O pulgão Myzus persicae (Sulzer) é uma importante praga da batateira, causando danos diretos pela quantidade de seiva extraída e por ser vetor de importantes fitovírus. Este trabalho foi realizado para verificar a atuação do silício como indutor de resistência em batata a M. persicae. Foram utilizados quatro tratamentos: adubação foliar com solução de ácido silícico a 1%; adubação via solo com 250 ml de solução de ácido silícico a 1%; adubação foliar com solução de ácido silício a 1% + adubação via solo com 250 ml de solução de ácido silícico a 1%1; e a testemunha. Os tratamentos foram aplicados trinta dias após a emergência das brotações. Após quinze dias da aplicação dos tratamentos avaliou-se a preferência e alguns aspectos biológicos do pulgão. Posteriormente foi feita a quantificação do teor de taninos e de lignina presentes nas folhas e a determinação das atividades das enzimas peroxidase e fenilalanina amônia-liase. A adubação silicatada não afetou a preferência dos pulgões, porém diminuiu a fecundidade e a taxa de crescimento populacional dos insetos. A percentagem de lignina aumentou nas folhas das plantas adubadas com silício via solo e/ou foliar e a porcentagem de taninos aumentou apenas nas folhas das plantas adubadas via solo + foliar. O silício atuou como indutor de resistência a M. persicae em batata.

The aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) is an important pest of potato and causes direct harm, due to the quantity of sap extracted and for being vector of important phytovirus. This work was carried out to evaluate the action of silicon as a resistance inducer of potato to M. persicae. Four treatments were tried: foliar fertilization with silicon acid at 1%; soil fertilization with 250 ml silicic acid solution at 1%; foliar fertilization with silicon acid at 1% + soil fertilization with 250 ml silicic acid solution at 1%; and a control. The treatments were applied thirty days after the explants emergence. Fifteen days after the application of the treatments, feeding preference and some biological aspects of the aphids were evaluated. After, the content of tannins and lignin present in the leaves and the activity of the enzymes peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were also determined. The silicon fertilization did not affect the preference of the aphids; however it reduced fecundity and the rate of population growth of the insects. The lignin percentage increased in the leaves of plants fertilized with silicon via soil and/or foliar and the percentage of tannins increased only in the leaves fertilized via soil plus foliar. The silicon acted as a resistance inducer to M. persicae in potato.

Neste trabalho, o objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos do ácido silícico e do acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) sobre a biologia e o comportamento do pulgão-verde em plantas de trigo. O experimento constituiu-se em um fatorial 4 (sem silício, silício via foliar, silício via solo e silício via solo + foliar) x 2 (com e sem acibenzolar-S-methyl), em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso. Um teste de preferência com chance de escolha foi montado em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com dez repetições. A concentração de ácido silícico foi 1% e de ASM, 0,5%. Para a avaliação dos tratamentos foram realizados testes de preferência com chance de escolha (contagem de pulgões adultos em secções foliares de plantas de trigo), avaliação da biologia (duração dos períodos pré-reprodutivo, reprodutivo e pós-reprodutivo, mortalidade no período pré-reprodutivo, número de ninfas produzidas, longevidade e taxa de crescimento populacional) e colonização dos pulgões (número de pulgões adultos e ninfas). No teste de preferência com chance de escolha, as plantas tratadas com ASM não foram preferidas pelos pulgões. A aplicação de silício ou ASM reduziu o número de ninfas produzidas, a taxa de crescimento populacional, o período pós-reprodutivo e a longevidade do pulgão-verde. Na colonização o número de pulgões foi reduzido pela aplicação de ASM ou silício. A aplicação de ácido silícico, principalmente via solo, ou de ASM, é promissora para uso no manejo integrado do pulgão-verde em trigo.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of silicon acid and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) on biology and behavior of the aphid (greenbug) in wheat plants. The experiment involved a 4 factorial (no silicon, silicon on leaf, silicon in the soil and silicon in the soil + on leaf), x 2 (with and without acibenzolar-S-methyl), in a completely randomized design. A preference test with chance of choice was set in blocks randomized, with 10 replications. Silicon acid was used at 1% and ASM at 0.5%. The treatments were evaluated by means of preference tests with chance of choice (adult aphids in leaf sections of wheat plants were counted), biological studies (length of pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, mortality rate during the pre-productive period, number of nymphs, longevity and population growth rate were determined) and colonization of aphids (number of adult aphids and nymphs were determined). In the preference test, plants that received ASM were not chosen by the aphids. The application of the silicon or ASM reduced significantly the number of nymphs, the population growth rate, the post-reproductive period and the longevity of the greenbug. A significant reduction of the number of aphids was observed during aphids colonization when ASM or silicon were applied. The addition of silicon acid, mostly in the soil, or of ASM is promising as a control method in the integrated management of aphid in wheat.

Foi avaliado o efeito do silício, aplicado em plantas de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) sobre o pulgão-verde Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Plantas de trigo foram tratadas com silício incorporado no solo e aplicado nas folhas. Foram avaliadas as durações dos períodos pré-reprodutivo, reprodutivo e pós-reprodutivo, como também a fecundidade e a longevidade do pulgão-verde. O comportamento alimentar foi investigado utilizando-se a técnica de Electrical Penetration Graphs (EPG-DC) e "honeydew clock". Plantas tratadas com silício mostraram efeito adverso sobre o desenvolvimento do pulgão. A penetração dos estiletes não foi afetada pelos tratamentos com silício. Contudo, os estiletes foram retirados mais freqüentemente das plantas tratadas com silício, o que reduziu o tempo de prova. O xilema e o floema foram igualmente alcançados em todos os tratamentos e os pulgões permanecerem alimentando-se no floema por períodos similares. Entretanto, a excreção de honeydew foi reduzida no tratamento com silício, indicando menor taxa de ingestão ou maior retenção de seiva no corpo do pulgão. Portanto, alterações químicas e indução de resistência estão provavelmente envolvidas na redução da performance do pulgão, sem, entretanto, alterar seu período de alimentação.

The effect of silicon-treated wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was evaluated. Plants were treated with silicon incorporated to the soil and by foliar spraying. Aphid development was evaluated by observing the duration of the pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, as well as fecundity and longevity. Probing behaviour was investigated by using the DC electrical penetration graphs (EPG) technique and a "honeydew clock". Silica treated plants had a clear adverse effect on aphid development. Stylet penetration was not affected by treatments showing no physical barriers by the plant tissue. However, stylet was withdrawn more often on plants treated with silica, resulting in reduction of probing time. Sieve elements were reached equally by aphids in all treatments and the insects remained ingesting phloem sap for similar periods. However, honeydew excretion was highly reduced indicating lower sap ingestion rate or higher sap retention inside the body. Chemical changes and induced resistance are possibly related to the reduction of aphid performance.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de silicato de cálcio (CaSiO3) e do ativador acibenzolar-S-methyl (BTH) na indução de resistência em pepino à mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biótipo B. Testes de preferência com e sem chance de escolha e de antibiose foram realizados em casa-de-vegetação e no laboratório do Departamento de Entomologia da Universidade Federal de Lavras/UFLA, MG. O delineamento foi o inteiramente ao acaso com os seguintes tratamentos: 1) testemunha, 2) aplicação de 3 g de silicato de cálcio.kg-1 de substrato, 3) duas aplicações de 200 ml de solução a 1% de silicato de cálcio/vaso, 4) duas aplicações de 100 ml de solução a 0,005% de BTH/vaso e 5) aplicação de silicato de cálcio e BTH na mesma dose dos tratamentos 3 e 4. Para eliminar o efeito isolado do cálcio, foi aplicado 1g de carbonato de cálcio.kg-1 de substrato no tratamento 1 (testemunha). O silicato de cálcio e BTH causaram efeitos negativos na população da mosca-branca pela redução da oviposição, aumento do ciclo biológico e da mortalidade na fase de ninfa. Apresentaram-se, assim, como produtos alternativos a serem utilizados no manejo integrado de mosca-branca na cultura de pepino.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of calcium silicate (CaSiO3) and of the activator acibenzolar-S-methyl (BTH) on resistance induction in cucumber, against the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B. Antibiosis, free-choice and no-choice preference tests were conducted in a greenhouse and at laboratory of the, Departamento de Entomologia of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), MG, Brazil. The design was completely randomized, with the following treatments: 1) control; 2) application of 3 g calcium silicate.kg-1 of substrate; 3) two 200ml applications of 1% calcium silicate solution per pot; 4) two 100ml applications of 0.005% BTH solution per pot; and 5) application of calcium silicate and BTH at the rates used for treatments 3 and 4. To eliminate the effect of calcium, treatment 1 (control) received 1g of calcium carbonate (control). Calcium silicate and BTH diminished the whitefly population by reducing oviposition and increasing cycle length and mortality at the nymphal stage and can be chemical alternatives for the whitefly integrated management in cucumber.

Estudou-se a interação tritrófica: trigo, pulgão-verde Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) e seus inimigos naturais-chave Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e Aphidius colemani Viereck, em plantas com ou sem adubação de silício. Os tratamentos consistiram em: 1) aplicação de silício via foliar; 2) aplicação de silício no solo e 3) testemunha (sem aplicação). As avaliações consistiram: a) teste de preferência do pulgão com chance de escolha em laboratório e b) aspectos biológicos das fases imaturas do predador C. externa, alimentado com pulgões criados em plantas dos diferentes tratamentos. Para a realização dos bioensaios com A. colemani foram realizados dois tratamentos: 1) aplicação de silício no solo e 2) testemunha (sem aplicação). As características biológicas avaliadas foram: duração da fase imatura, longevidade, razão sexual, ciclo total e porcentagem de parasitismo. Verificou-se que a aplicação de silício aumentou o grau de resistência das plantas de trigo diminuindo a preferência do pulgão-verde em relação à testemunha. Esse resultado pode estar relacionado à barreira mecânica proporcionada pela deposição de sílica na parede celular, o que dificultaria a penetração do estilete no tecido da planta, como também ao aumento na síntese de compostos de defesa da planta. Entretanto, não foi observado nenhum efeito indireto da aplicação de silício nas características biológicas tanto do predador como do parasitóide.

We studied the tritrophic interaction: wheat, greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) and its key natural enemies, Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and Aphidius colemani Viereck, in plants with or without silicon fertilization. Treatments consisted of: 1) silicon application via the leaves; 2) silicon application in the soil 3) control (no application). The evaluations consisted of: a) free-choice aphid preference test in the laboratory, from the 35th day after plant emergence, and b) biological aspects of the immature stages of predator C. externa, feeding on aphids reared on plants from the different treatments. Two treatments were tried in the bioassays involving A. colemani: 1) silicon application in the soil, and 2) control (no application). The biological traits evaluated were: duration of the immature stage, longevity, sex ratio, total developmental time, and percentage parasitism. Silicon application increased the degree of resistance in wheat plants, decreasing greenbug preference in relation to the control. This result could be related to the mechanical barrier provided by silica deposition in the cell wall, which would make it difficult for the stylet to penetrate the plant tissue, as well as an increase in the synthesis of plant defense compounds. However, no indirect effect of silicon application was observed on the biological traits of either the predator or the parasitoid.

Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a seletividade dos inseticidas abamectina (0,0054 g i.a. L-1), deltametrina (0,0125 g i.a. L-1), óxido de fenibutatina (0,4 g i.a. L-1), lufenurom (0,0375 g i.a. L-1), tebufenozide (0,12 g i.a. L-1) e tiaclopride (0,036 g i.a. L-1) para ovos e larvas de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Os inseticidas foram pulverizados, por meio de torre de Potter, garantindo a aplicação de 1,5 ± 0,5 mg/cm², nos ovos ou em placas de vidro, sobre as quais foram colocadas larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares. Avaliaram-se a viabilidade dos ovos, a sobrevivência de larvas, pupas e adultos e o efeito dos inseticidas na capacidade reprodutiva dos indivíduos oriundos de ovos e de larvas tratadas. A toxicidade dos inseticidas foi calculada em função do seu efeito total (E), conforme metodologia padrão estabelecida pela "IOBC". Todos os inseticidas foram seletivos para ovos de C. externa. Lufenurom e deltametrina foram altamente nocivos a larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares de C. externa (E > 99% de mortalidade). Abamectina, óxido de fenibutatina, tebufenozide e tiaclopride apresentaram toxicidade intermediária à fase larval de C. externa. O primeiro ínstar desse predador foi o mais susceptível à ação dos produtos avaliados. Recomenda-se avaliar os efeitos dos inseticidas testados para larvas de C. externa em condições de casa de vegetação e campo para confirmação de sua toxicidade e possível utilização em programas de manejo integrado de pragas em citros.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the selectivity of abamectin (0.0054 g a.i. L-1), deltamethrin (0.0125 g a.i. L-1), fenbutatin oxide (0.4 g a.i. L-1), lufenuron (0.0375 g a.i. L-1), tebufenozide (0.12 g a.i. L-1) and thiacloprid (0.036 g a.i. L-1) to eggs and larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Commercial formulations of the insecticides were diluted in water and sprayed, using a Potter's tower, at 1.5 ± 0.5 mg.cm-2, either on eggs or on glass plates, where first, second and third-instar larvae were placed to assess the contact action on them. Egg viability, survival of larvae, pupae and adults, and the effects of the compounds on the reproductive capacity of individuals were evaluated. The total toxic effect (E) of the insecticides was calculated according to the standard methodology established by IOBC. All tested insecticides were selective for eggs of C. externa. Lufenuron and deltamethrin were highly toxic to first, second and third-instar larvae of C. externa (E > 99% of mortality). Abamectin, fenbutatin oxide, tebufenozide and thiacloprid were moderately toxic to larvae of C. externa. First-instar larvae were the most sensitive to the compounds. All tested insecticides need to be tested under greenhouse and field conditions, to further evaluate their suitability for IPM programs in citrus crops.

Avaliou-se a seletividade dos inseticidas abamectina, lufenurom, óxido de fenbutatina, tebufenozide, tiaclopride e deltametrina utilizados em citros para pupas e adultos de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Os experimentos foram conduzidos no Departamento de Entomologia da UFLA, Lavras, MG. As pulverizações foram realizadas por meio de torre de Potter utilizando-se 1,5 ± 0,5 mg/cm². Após a pulverização, as pupas foram colocadas em tubos de vidro e mantidas em câmara climática, e os adultos em gaiolas de PVC em sala climatizada (25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 12h). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com seis inseticidas e dez repetições, sendo cada uma formada por três pupas ou um casal de adultos. Também foi avaliado o efeito do lufenurom na capacidade reprodutiva quando pulverizado sobre machos ou fêmeas desse predador. Os produtos foram enquadrados em classes de toxicidade seguindo metodologia estabelecida pela Organização Internacional para Controle Biológico e Integrado de Animais e Plantas Nocivos (IOBC). Todos os produtos foram seletivos para pupas (E < 30% de mortalidade). Tiaclopride e deltametrina foram tóxicos aos adultos (E > 99% de mortalidade), sendo que óxido de fenbutatina e tebufenozide mostraram-se seletivos. Quando pulverizado somente sobre fêmeas de C. externa, lufenurom reduziu significativamente a viabilidade de ovos. Os produtos óxido de fenbutatina e tebufenozide, em função da baixa toxicidade apresentada, podem ser recomendados no manejo integrado de pragas na cultura dos citros em associação com C. externa.

The selectivity of the insecticides abamectin, lufenuron, fenbutatin oxide, tebufenozide, thiacloprid and deltamethrin used in citrus crops was evaluated for pupae and adults of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). The experiments were conducted in the Entomology Department of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, MG, Brazil. The spraying was accomplished by means of Potter tower with volume of application of 1.5 ± 0.5 mg/cm². After spraying, the pupae were kept in test tubes in a climatic chamber and the adults in PVC cages in a room at 25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and 12h photophase. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with six products and ten replicates, each one composed of three pupae or a pair of adults. The action of lufenuron on males or females of C. externa was also evaluated under a completely randomized design with three treatments and ten replicates, each one composed of one pair. The insecticides were classified following the method established by the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC). All compounds were selective to the pupae (E < 30% of mortality). However, thiacloprid and deltamethrin were toxic to the adults (E > 99% of mortality), whereas fenbutatin oxide and tebufenozide were selective. Lufenuron reduced the survival rate of the egg when sprayed on the females. Thus, the results indicate that only fenbutatin oxide and tebufenozide could be used with C. externa in integrated pest management programs in citrus crops.
