Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever as práticas de ressuscitação volêmica em unidades de terapia intensiva brasileiras e compará-las com as de outros países participantes do estudo Fluid-TRIPS. Métodos: Este foi um estudo observacional transversal, prospectivo e internacional, de uma amostra de conveniência de unidades de terapia intensiva de 27 países (inclusive o Brasil), com utilização da base de dados Fluid-TRIPS compilada em 2014. Descrevemos os padrões de ressuscitação volêmica utilizados no Brasil em comparação com os de outros países e identificamos os fatores associados com a escolha dos fluidos. Resultados: No dia do estudo, foram incluídos 3.214 pacientes do Brasil e 3.493 pacientes de outros países, dos quais, respectivamente, 16,1% e 26,8% (p < 0,001) receberam fluidos. A principal indicação para ressuscitação volêmica foi comprometimento da perfusão e/ou baixo débito cardíaco (Brasil 71,7% versus outros países 56,4%; p < 0,001). No Brasil, a percentagem de pacientes que receberam soluções cristaloides foi mais elevada (97,7% versus 76,8%; p < 0,001), e solução de cloreto de sódio a 0,9% foi o cristaloide mais comumente utilizado (62,5% versus 27,1%; p < 0,001). A análise multivariada sugeriu que os níveis de albumina se associaram com o uso tanto de cristaloides quanto de coloides, enquanto o tipo de prescritor dos fluidos se associou apenas com o uso de cristaloides. Conclusão: Nossos resultados sugerem que cristaloides são usados mais frequentemente do que coloides para ressuscitação no Brasil, e essa discrepância, em termos de frequências, é mais elevada do que em outros países. A solução de cloreto de sódio 0,9% foi o cristaloide mais frequentemente prescrito. Os níveis de albumina sérica e o tipo de prescritor de fluidos foram os fatores associados com a escolha de cristaloides ou coloides para a prescrição de fluidos.
Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

ABSTRACT: Vitamin A deficiency is the third most important micronutrient deficiency having a significant impact on public health worldwide. The aim of this study was to develop a carotenoid extraction process with edible vegetable oils, using a central composite design which, concurrently, enriches the oils with provitamin A carotenoids. The stability of carotenoids in the oil and their shelf life was also evaluated. The process also aimed to meet the Recommended Daily Intake for vitamin A (600 μg retinol equivalent for an adult) with the enriched oil. The results showed that 20 % of the vegetable matrix (dried carrot) in vegetable oil and 5 min of extraction time was an optimum combination for both soy oil (64.43 μg retinol equivalent mL−1) and olive oil (62.98 μg retinol equivalent mL−1). Furthermore, the ingestion of just a spoonful (∼10 mL) of the enriched oils would meet the Recommended Daily Intake for vitamin A (600 μg retinol equivalent), and, thus, it was possible to affirm that a dose of vegetable oils enriched with provitamin A contributes to meeting the Recommended Daily Intake for vitamin A. The proposed process is based on simple and low-cost technology that can be used to enrich edible oils (soybean and olive oil) with provitamin A.

Abstract Background Posttraumatic stress disorder consists of a set of symptoms that occurs in response to one or more traumatic events and can occur in postpartum, from traumatic situations related to the birth or to the baby’s health in the first days of life. It is important tracking the presence of birth trauma, but there is not available instruments in the Brazilian context for this purpose. Objectives To present the cross-cultural adaptation of City Birth Trauma Scale (BiTS) into Brazilian portuguese. Methods Cross-cultural adaptation involved independent translations, synthesis,back-translation, and submission to the original author’s appreciation. After the scale was subjected to face validity, followed by a pilot study with postpartum mothers. Results All steps were performed for the cross-cultural adaptation. Regarding face validity, items evaluated concerning different types of equivalence, presented satisfactory agreement values (≥4.20). Most of the expert’s suggestions were followed, being the main ones related to adjustments in prepositions, pronouns and verbal subjects. Pilot study showed that the mothers had been able to understand and respond to the instrument without adjustments. Discussion BiTS’s Brazilian version proved to be cross-culturally adapted, ensuring the possibility of intercultural data comparison from the semantic, idiomatic, cultural, and conceptual perspectives. New studies are being conducted to attest its psychometric adequacy.

ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii, with more complex architecture (higher number of leaves and thus more cavities), being distinguished by its high species richness (73 taxa). The bromeliads exhibited little similarity in species composition, with only one species (Phacus polytrophos) occurring in all four species. Throughout the entire sampling period, classes with higher species richness, especially due to A. nahoumii, were Zygnematophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, which accounted for about 80 % of all species inventoried. Our results contribute to the knowledge of microalga communities of bromeliad phytotelmata in Brazil with regard to species richness and composition, as well as significant environmental characteristics.

ABSTRACT Germination rate and establishment success of plants in harsh environments depend on the ability of seeds to withstand unfavorable environmental conditions and avoid predators. Brazilian coastal plains, known as restinga, are subject to environmental factors that seriously limit plant establishment and survival (e.g. salinity, desiccation, oligotrophy, flooding, high temperature and radiation levels). We tested, both in field and laboratory experiments, conditions for germination and establishment of Allagoptera arenaria, a palm tree often found in restinga ecosystems of southeastern Brazil, and which have a principal role in plant community dynamics. Our results showed that the absence of mesocarp, high radiation exposure, and temperature were the main drivers of seed germination. In the field, the highest germination rate was linked to nude seeds buried in open areas. High temperatures and/or predation damaged seeds that remained on the soil surface, especially if they were close to the mother plant and alongside dung piles made by dispersers. Under controlled conditions, seeds exhibited optimum germination at 35 ºC. Therefore, the germination and establishment of A. arenaria depend as much on environmental conditions as on a network of interactions including vertebrates and invertebrates, which allow this species to colonize harsh, open areas in restinga ecosystems.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate pirarucu's (Arapaima gigas) ability to trigger a self-feeding system to regulate protein intake between two standard diets that contained 39% and 49% of crude protein. The same system allowed the evaluation of daily feeding and locomotor activity rhythms. Eighteen fish (654.44±26.85g) were distributed into six 250 L tanks (3 fish/tank). Fish had free access to both diets (39% vs. 49% protein) by feeders (2 per tank), adapted to be activated by fish themselves. This system was connected to a computer system. After an adaptation period, fish learned to activate feeders and the mean food intake recorded was 2.14% of their body weight on a daily basis. Fish showed feeding (72.48%) and locomotor (72.49%) activity predominantly during the daytime, and daily variations of choice between diets, but fixed a protein intake feeding target at 44.53%. These results should be considered when discussing feeding behavior, feeding schedules and diet intake regulations.

This work deals with preparation and characterization of H3PW12O40 (H3PW) supported on silica-alumina. Impregnation of H3PW (15, 20, 30 and 40 wt.%) on commercial silica-alumina support in acidic aqueous solution is effective for preparing this catalyst keeping its Keggin structure, according to different methods of characterization. The catalysts were tested in a model reaction of acetic acid with ethanol and 30 wt.% H3PW/SiO2-Al2O3 had the highest activity under the conditions: catalyst calcination at 300 ºC, temperature of 100 ºC, acetic acid:ethanol molar ratio of 2:1 and catalyst:acetic acid mass ratio of 10 wt.%. The reaction yield was 79 and 100% selectivity for ethyl acetate over three reutilizations, for reaction time of 2 h. The calculated total acid site distribution was 0.299 mmol g-1 (97% of the theoretical probed by pyridine), and most of these (0.236 mmol g-1) were Brønsted weak-medium strength (pyridine desorption between 300 and 500 ºC).

Chlorophyll fluorescence varies more across seasons than leaf water potential in drought-prone plants

RESUMO Entre os efeitos da mudança ambiental, a intensificação dos eventos de seca é notável e a vegetação tropical é apontada como altamente vulnerável a ela. No entanto, não está claro como plantas tropicais em habitats propensos à seca responderão a essa mudança. Em um ambiente de planície costeira arenosa, avaliamos a resposta de seis espécies vegetais à deficit de água ao longo das estações, a relação entre as suas características morfo-fisiológicas, e quais características seriam as melhores descritoras de resposta das plantas à seca. Independentemente de suculência foliar e fenologia, respostas entre as estações foram mais fortemente relacionadas a fluorescência da clorofila. Neste estudo demonstramos que a melhor compreensão de como espécies tropicais de habitats propensos a seca lidam com mudanças na disponibilidade de água pode ser baseada na variação sazonal de potencial hídrico e fluorescência da clorofila. Esta variação temporal de potencial hídrico e fluorescência da clorofila foram úteis para diferenciar grupos de espécies que são responsivas ou não responsivas à disponibilidade de água. Ressalta-se que a fluorescência da clorofila foi o descritor mais sensível de respostas das espécies tanto em termos sazonais quanto em curto prazo.
ABSTRACT Among the effects of environmental change, the intensification of drought events is noteworthy, and tropical vegetation is predicted to be highly vulnerable to it. However, it is not clear how tropical plants in drought-prone habitats will respond to this change. In a coastal sandy plain environment, we evaluated the response of six plant species to water deficits across seasons, the relationship between their morpho-physiological traits, and which traits would be the best descriptors of plants' response to drought. Regardless of leaf succulence and phenology, responses between seasons were most strongly related to chlorophyll fluorescence. In this study we have demonstrated that a better comprehension of how tropical species from drought-prone habitats cope with changes in water availability can be based on seasonal variation in leaf water potential and chlorophyll fluorescence. Temporal variation in leaf water potential and chlorophyll fluorescence was found useful for differentiating between groups of sandy soil species that are responsive or unresponsive to water availability. However, chlorophyll fluorescence appeared to be a more sensitive descriptor of their seasonal and short-term responses.

Campomelic dysplasia (CD) is an autosomal, dominantly inherited, skeletal abnormality belonging to the subgroup of bent bone dysplasias. In addition to bowed lower limbs, CD typically includes the following: disproportionate short stature, flat face, micrognathia, cleft palate, bell-shaped thorax, and club feet. Up to three quarters of 46, XY individuals may be sex-reversed. Radiological signs include scapular and pubic hypoplasia, narrow iliac wings, spaced ischia, and bowed femora and tibiae. Lethal CD is usually due to heterozygous mutations in SOX9, a major regulator of chondrocytic development. We present a detailed clinical and molecular characterization of nine Brazilian CD patients. Infants were either stillborn (n = 2) or died shortly after birth and presented similar phenotypes. Sex-reversal was observed in one of three chromosomally male patients. Sequencing of SOX9 revealed new heterozygous mutations in seven individuals. Six patients had mutations that resulted in premature transcriptional termination, while one infant had a single-nucleotide substitution at the conserved splice-site acceptor of intron 1. No clear genotype-phenotype correlations were observed. This study highlights the diversity of SOX9 mutations leading to lethal CD, and expands the group of known genetic alterations associated with this skeletal dysplasia.

Introdução: Estudos demonstram que a intervenção coronária percutânea primária realizada fora do horário de rotina está relacionada a pior prognóstico. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar os desfechos da intervenção coronária percutânea primária realizada nos períodos diurno e noturno em um centro cardiológico de referência. Métodos: Estudo de coorte prospectivo, que incluiu 1.108 pacientes consecutivamente atendidos por infarto agudo do miocárdio com supradesnivelamento do segmento ST, divididos nos grupos intervenção coronária percutânea primária diurna (se realizada entre 8 e 20 horas) e intervenção coronária percutânea primária noturna (se realizada entre 20 e 8 horas). Resultados: Incluímos 680 pacientes no grupo diurno e 428 no grupo noturno. As características basais referentes ao perfil demográfico, fatores de risco e classificação Killip foram semelhantes em ambos os grupos, porém o tempo porta-balão foi significativamente maior no grupo noturno (84 ± 66 minutos vs. 102 ± 98 minutos; p < 0,01). Vasos culpados, e fluxos TIMI pré e pós-procedimento não foram diferentes entre os grupos. Não encontramos diferenças significantes em relação à mortalidade hospitalar (7,6% vs. 10,2%; p = 0,16), trombose de stent (2,8% vs. 2,4%; p = 0,69) ou presença de sangramento maior (1,9% vs. 2,1%; p = 0,50). Em 1 ano, a mortalidade também foi semelhante (9,5% vs. 12,6%; p = 0,12). O principal preditor de mortalidade em 1 ano foi a classe III/IV de Killip (OR = 10,02; IC 95% 5,8-17,1; p < 0,01). Conclusões: Pacientes com infarto agudo do miocárdio apresentam taxas de desfechos clínicos semelhantes, independentemente do horário de realização da intervenção coronária percutânea primária. No entanto, o tempo porta-balão é significativamente maior nos pacientes tratados entre 20 e 8 horas.
Background: Previous studies have shown that off-hours primary percutaneous coronary interventions are related to a worse prognosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing on- and off-hours primary percutaneous coronary interventions performed at a reference cardiology center. Methods: Prospective cohort study, including 1,108 consecutive patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction divided into primary percutaneous coronary intervention performed during regular working hours group (on-hours: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm) and primary percutaneous coronary intervention during nonregular working hours group (off-hours: 8:00 pm to 8:00 am). Results: The sample included 680 patients in the on-hours group and 428 in the off-hours group. Baseline demographic data, risk factors and Killip classification were similar in both groups, however door-to-balloon time was significantly longer in the off-hours group (84 ± 66 minutes vs. 102 ± 98 minutes; p < 0.01). Culprit vessels, pre- and post-procedure TIMI flows were not different between groups. There were no significant differences for in-hospital mortality (7.6% vs. 10.2%; p = 0.16), stent thrombosis (2.8% vs. 2.4%; p = 0.69) or major bleeding (1.9% vs. 2.1%; p = 0.50). One-year mortality was also similar (9.5% vs. 12.6%; p = 0.12). The main predictor of mortality at 1 year was Killip III/IV (OR, 10.02; 95% CI, 5.8-17.1; p < 0.01). Conclusions: Patients with myocardial infarction have similar in-hospital clinical outcomes regardless of the time primary percutaneous coronary intervention is performed. However, door-to-balloon time is significantly longer in patients treated during off-hours.

Are leaf physiological traits related to leaf water isotopic enrichment in restinga woody species?

Durante a transpiração das plantas, moléculas de água com isótopos mais leves de oxigênio e hidrogênio evaporam e se difundem mais rapidamente através dos estômatos do que moléculas com isótopos mais pesados, o que causa enriquecimento isotópico de água em folhas. Embora modelos prévios assumam que a água da folha é bem misturada e isotopicamente uniforme, o fechamento não uniforme dos estômatos, promovendo enriquecimentos diferentes entre as células e diferentes compartimentos de água dentro de folhas, devido às características morfo-fisiológicas, podem levar a imprecisões dos modelos isotópicos na previsão de enriquecimento da água foliar. Nós avaliamos o papel de atributos morfo-fisiológicos foliares sobre o enriquecimento isotópico da água foliar em espécies arbóreas que ocorrem em planícies arenosas costeiras no Brasil, conhecidas como restingas. Isótopos estáveis de hidrogênio e oxigênio em amostras de solo, ramos e folhas e características foliares foram medidos em seis espécies arbóreas de restinga durante períodos seco e chuvoso. O enriquecimento isotópico de água foliar relativo à água dos ramos foi mais homogêneo entre as espécies durante a seca, em contraste com o período chuvoso, sugerindo respostas convergentes para lidar com a heterogeneidade temporal na disponibilidade de água. A média de enriquecimento isotópico de água foliar relativo à água dos ramos durante o período de seca foi altamente correlacionada com o conteúdo relativo de água apoplasmática. Nós discutimos estes resultados no contexto de modelos atuais de enriquecimento isotópico de água foliar como uma função do efeito Péclet. Sugerimos que estudos futuros devem incluir o conteúdo relativo de água apoplasmático em modelos isotópicos.
During plant-transpiration, water molecules having the lighter stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen evaporate and diffuse at a faster rate through the stomata than molecules having the heavier isotopes, which cause isotopic enrichment of leaf water. Although previous models have assumed that leaf water is well-mixed and isotopically uniform, non-uniform stomatal closure, promoting different enrichments between cells, and different pools of water within leaves, due to morpho-physiological traits, might lead to inaccuracies in isotopic models predicting leaf water enrichment. We evaluate the role of leaf morpho-physiological traits on leaf water isotopic enrichment in woody species occurring in a coastal vegetation of Brazil known asrestinga. Hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope values of soil, plant stem and leaf water and leaf traits were measured in six species from restinga vegetation during a drought and a wet period. Leaf water isotopic enrichment relative to stem water was more homogeneous among species during the drought in contrast to the wet period suggesting convergent responses to deal to temporal heterogeneity in water availability. Average leaf water isotopic enrichment relative to stem water during the drought period was highly correlated with relative apoplastic water content. We discuss this observation in the context of current models of leaf water isotopic enrichment as a function of the Péclet effect. We suggest that future studies should include relative apoplastic water content in isotopic models.

INTRODUÇÃO: A tromboaspiração é recomendada como método adjunto à intervenção coronária percutânea (ICP) primária, mas o insucesso em recuperar trombos é relativamente frequente. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as taxas de insucesso de tromboaspiração e identificar seus preditores, em uma série contemporânea de pacientes. MÉTODOS: Estudo de coorte prospectivo que incluiu pacientes consecutivos atendidos com infarto agudo do miocárdio com elevação do segmento ST e submetidos à ICP primária com tromboaspiração no período de dezembro de 2009 a dezembro de 2011. Os procedimentos de tromboaspiração foram realizados por decisão do operador, e o sucesso foi definido como aspiração efetiva de trombo pelo cateter dedicado, com recuperação do fluxo coronário (fluxo TIMI > 0). RESULTADOS: Foram realizadas 1.055 ICPs primárias, sendo que a tromboaspiração foi utilizada em 37% dos casos, com taxa de sucesso de 70%. Foram identificados 254 pacientes com sucesso e 107 com insucesso da tromboaspiração. Insucesso de tromboaspiração foi associado a: idade, hipertensão, diabetes mellitus, dislipidemia, ICP prévia, escore de risco TIMI, Killip IV, contagem de leucócitos, fibrinogênio sérico, diâmetro de referência do vaso-alvo e TIMI 3 pré-procedimento. Pacientes com insucesso da tromboaspiração apresentaram tendência a maior mortalidade (11,6% vs. 5,9%; P = 0,09). CONCLUSÕES: Insucesso de tromboaspiração durante ICP primária ocorreu em 30% dos casos e esteve associado a tendência de maior mortalidade. A identificação de preditores clínicos, laboratoriais e angiográficos pode auxiliar no aprimoramento desses dispositivos e em sua técnica, além da escolha de pacientes mais adequados para seu emprego.
BACKGROUND: Aspiration thrombectomy is recommended as an adjunctive method in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), however, thrombus aspiration failure is relatively frequent. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate and identify predictors of failed thrombus aspiration in a contemporaneous series of patients. METHODS: Prospective cohort study including consecutive patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary PCI with thrombus aspiration from December 2009 to December 2011. Aspiration thrombectomy was performed at the operator's discretion and success was defined as effective thrombus aspiration by a dedicated catheter with the achievement of a final TIMI flow > 0. RESULTS: 1,055 primary PCIs were performed and aspiration thrombectomy was used in 37% of cases with a success rate of 70%. Aspiration thrombectomy success was observed in 254 patients whereas failure was observed in 107 patients. Aspiration thrombectomy failure was associated with age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, previous PCI, TIMI risk score, Killip IV, leukocyte count, serum fibrinogen, target vessel reference diameter and preprocedural TIMI 3 flow. Patients with failed thrombus aspiration had a trend towards higher mortality (11.6% vs. 5.9%; P = 0.09). CONCLUSIONS: Aspiration thrombectomy failure during primary PCI was observed in 30% of the cases and was associated with a trend towards higher mortality. The identification of clinical, laboratory and angiographic predictors may help improve these devices and the technique and enable better patient selection.
