Abstract Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of major depressive disorder (MDD) as a risk factor for suicidal ideation in individuals whose ages varied from 11 to 24 years and who were attending educational institutions. Data source: A systematic review was carried out by searching in PubMed and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS). Original studies conducted in educational institutions, including individuals whose age varied from 11 to 24 years, in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were included. Data synthesis: Eight studies were selected for the meta-analysis, including 35,443 youths, with an average age of 16.8 years, predominantly female (51.2%), and from middle-income Asian countries (91.6%). An odds ratio of MDD of 3.89 (95%CI 2.46–6.17) for suicide ideation in youth was found. Subgroup analysis showed higher effects in Asia (OR=4.71; 95%CI 3.22–6.89) than Americas (OR=1.71; 95%CI 1.44–2.03). The meta-regression model indicated that younger adolescents (coef=-0.63; 95%CI 1.09–-0.18; p<0.01) and older studies (coef=-0.23; 95%CI 0.039–-0.08; p<0.01) presented higher effects of MDD on suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Early detection and treatment of MDD in youth patients are of utmost importance for preventing suicidal ideation. Educational institutions could play an important role in the early detection and intervention.
Resumo Objetivo: Analisar o efeito do transtorno depressivo maior (TDM) como fator de risco para a ideação suicida em indivíduos com idades entre 11 e 24 anos que frequentam instituições de ensino. Fontes de dados: Revisão sistemática realizada até agosto de 2020 por meio de buscas nas bases United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed) e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), sem limitações quanto à data de publicação. Síntese dos dados: Oito estudos foram selecionados para a metanálise, incluindo 35.443 jovens com idade média de 16,8 anos, predominantemente do sexo feminino (51,2%) e de países asiáticos de renda média (91,6%). Foi encontrado odds ratio (OR) de TDM de 3,89 (intervalo de confiança — IC95% 2,46–6,17) para a ideação suicida em jovens. A análise de subgrupo mostrou efeitos maiores na Ásia (OR=4,71; IC95% 3,22–6,89) do que nas Américas (OR=1,71; IC95% 1,44–2,03). O modelo de metarregressão demonstrou que adolescentes mais jovens (coef=-0,63; IC95% -1,09–-0,18; p<0,01) e estudos mais antigos (coef=-0,23; IC95% -0,039–-0,08; p<0,01) apresentaram maiores efeitos do TDM sobre a ideação suicida. Conclusões: Observou-se relação entre TDM e ideação suicida no continente asiático, entre adolescentes mais jovens e em estudos mais antigos.

ABSTRACT Background: To analyze the epidemiology, surveillance, and control strategies for trachoma in the state of Ceará, northeast Brazil, from 2007 to 2021. Methods: This ecological study was based on secondary data from the Information System on Notifiable Diseases of the Secretary of Health of the state of Ceará. Data from school and home surveys for trachoma detection obtained during the study period were analyzed, the percentage of positivity was estimated, and sociodemographic and clinico-epidemiological factors were investigated. Results: The coverage of trachoma surveillance and control actions in Ceará municipalities increased from 12.5% in 2007 to 55.9% in 2019, but with an average restriction of 8.0% during the COVID-19 pandemic. The estimated trachoma positivity (mean overall positivity) was less than 5.0% (2.76%, 95% CI 1.2-5.2), with a higher proportion of cases in the 5-9-year age group (45.0%, 95% CI 44.6-45.4), in females (53.2%, 95% CI 52.8-53.6), and rural areas (52.6%, 95% CI 52.2-53.0). Positivity above 10.0% was observed in the Litoral Leste/Jaguaribe and Sertão Central regions, with a higher occurrence of the follicular inflammatory clinical form (98.1%, 95% CI 98.0-98.2). Conclusions: Trachoma remains in the state of Ceará and is likely underreported. Despite recent advances, the fragility of health surveillance activities compromises the recognition of the actual magnitude and distribution of trachoma in the state. Accurate information is fundamental for planning, monitoring, and evaluating surveillance and disease control.

Abstract Introduction Despite the results of epidemiological and psychometric studies reporting comparable levels of tobacco dependence among males and females, some clinical studies have detected disparities. Some smoking cessation studies based on clinical setting programs reported poorer outcomes among women than men. Methods This retrospective cohort study aimed to compare treatment success and retention between men and women on a smoking cessation program (n = 1,014) delivered at a CAPS-AD unit in Brazil. The psychological intervention lasted 6 weeks for each group of 15 patients. Each patient had to participate in weekly group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions and individual medical appointments during this period. These appointments were focused on the possibility of prescribing pharmacological treatment (i.e., nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, or nortriptyline) as adjuvants to group therapy. Results The women had lower smoking severity at baseline, more clinical symptoms, and lower prevalence of alcohol and drug use disorders and were older than the men. Females had significantly higher levels of success (36.6% vs. 29.7%) and retention (51.6% vs. 41.4%) than males. Sensitivity analysis showed that female gender was significantly associated with both retention and success, among those without drug use disorders only. Conclusion Depending on the smoking cessation setting (i.e., low and middle-income countries and mental health and addiction care units), females can achieve similar and even higher quit rates than males. Previous drug use disorder was an important confounding variable in the gender outcomes analyses. Future studies should try to replicate these positive smoking cessation effects of CBT-based group therapy plus pharmacotherapy in women.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to evaluate angular progression of patients with a diagnosis of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), that await surgical treatment. Methods: This is an observational and descriptive study. Data were collected for age at initial surgical indication, initial date and Cobb angle, date and Cobb angle of the follow-up visit, time elapsed between the initial and follow-up visit, and type of curve. All recorded Cobb angles were reviewed by the authors. Results: 86.1% of the individuals were women, the mean age of indication for surgical treatment was 13.34 years. The most common type of curve was Lenke 3 and the one that progressed the most was Lenke 4. The general average of annual progression was 9.89 degrees for the primary curves and 12.32 for the secondary curves, and the follow-up was, on average, 35.77 months. Conclusion: The progression of the magnitude of the curve increases during the wait for the definitive treatment of AIS, no matter which group of the Lenke classification the curve belongs to. The secondary curves present a progression rate of 12.32º/year, higher than the main curve, which presents a rate of 9.89º/year. The waiting time has been increasing over the years, which is evident compared to older publications. Level of Evidence IV; Type of Study: Prognostic Study.
RESUMEN: Objetivo: Este estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar la progresión del valor angular de individuos no tratados diagnosticados con Escoliosis Idiopática del Adolescente (EIA), que están en espera de un procedimiento quirúrgico. Métodos: Se trata de un estudio observacional y descriptivo. Se recogieron datos de edad de indicación quirúrgica inicial, fecha inicial y ángulo de Cobb, fecha y ángulo de Cobb de la visita de seguimiento, tiempo transcurrido entre la visita inicial y de seguimiento y tipo de curva. Todos los ángulos de Cobb registrados fueron revisados por los autores. Resultados: El 86,1% de los individuos eran mujeres, la edad media de indicación del tratamiento quirúrgico fue de 13,34 años. El tipo de curva más común fue Lenke 3 y el que más progresó fue Lenke 4. El promedio general de progresión anual fue de 9,89 grados para las curvas primarias y 12,32 para las curvas secundarias y el seguimiento fue en promedio de 35,77 meses. Conclusión: La progresión de la magnitud de la curva aumenta durante la espera del tratamiento definitivo de la EIA, independientemente del grupo de la clasificación de Lenke al que pertenezca la curva. Las curvas secundarias presentan una tasa de progresión de 12,32º/año, superior a la curva principal que presenta una tasa de 9,89º/año. El tiempo de espera ha ido aumentando a lo largo de los años, lo cual es evidente al compararlo con publicaciones más antiguas. Nivel de Evidencia IV; Tipo de Estudio: Estudio Pronostico.

Métodos: Este é um estudo observacional e descritivo. Foram coletados os seguintes dados dos pacientes: idade da indicação cirúrgica inicial, data da avaliação inicial e ângulo de Cobb, data e ângulo de Cobb nas consultas de seguimento, tempo decorrido entre as consultas inicial e de seguimento, bem como os tipos de curva. Todos os ângulos de Cobb registrados foram revisados pelos autores. Resultados: 86,1% dos indivíduos eram mulheres, a idade média de indicação de tratamento cirúrgico foi de 13,34 anos. O tipo de curva mais comum foi a Lenke 3 e a que mais progrediu foi a Lenke 4. A média geral de progressão anual foi de 9,89 graus para as curvas primárias e 12,32 para as curvas secundárias e o acompanhamento foi em média de 35,77 meses. Conclusão: A progressão da magnitude da curva aumentou durante a espera pelo tratamento definitivo da EIA, não importando em qual grupo da classificação de Lenke a curva pertence. As curvas secundárias apresentaram taxa de progressão de 12,32º/ano que é maior se comparada com a curva principal que apresenta taxa de 9,89º/ano. O tempo de espera vem aumentando com o passar dos anos, sendo evidente quando comparado com as publicações mais antigas. Nível de Evidência IV; Tipo de Estudo: Estudo Prognostico.

ABSTRACT Introduction: colonoscopy is the best method for detecting polyps, with a reduction in colorectal cancer mortality of 29% and reaching 47% for distal tumors. However, it fails to demonstrate a significant reduction in proximal colon cancer mortality, and is the most common segment with interval neoplasm. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact on detection of polyps of a second sequential evaluation of cecum and ascending colon, with or without the use of indigo carmine chromoendoscopy. Methods: prospective, non-randomized clinical trial. Patients were divided into two groups. The first (G1) underwent a routine colonoscopy, followed by a second endoscopy assessment of ascending colon and cecum. The second group (G2) underwent a routine colonoscopy, followed by a second assessment of the ascending colon and cecum with indigo carmine chromoendoscopy. Results: In total, 203 patients were analyzed, 101 in the G1 and 102 in the G2. Newer polyps were identified in both groups after the second assessment with a significantly higher number of polyps detected in the patients in the G2 (p=0.0001). The number of patients who had at least one polyp in the two endoscopic assessments was significantly higher in the G2 (53 or 52% vs 27 or 26.7%, p=0.0002). In the second endoscopic assessment, the number of polyps found was also significantly higher in the G2 (50 or 76.9%) compared to the G1 (15 or 23.1%), p<0.0001. Conclusions: the second assessment with dye-based chromoendoscopy increases the detection of polyps in the ascending colon and cecum.
RESUMO Introdução: a colonoscopia é o melhor método para detecção de pólipos, com redução da mortalidade por câncer colorretal de 29% e chegando até 47% para tumores distais. No entanto, existe falha em demonstrar redução significativa na mortalidade no cólon proximal sendo o segmento mais comum de neoplasia de intervalo. O presente estudo avaliou o impacto na detecção de pólipos em uma segunda avaliação sequencial do ceco e cólon ascendente, com ou sem o uso de cromoendoscopia com Indigo carmim. Métodos: estudo prospectivo, não randomizado. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos. O primeiro (G1) foi submetido à colonoscopia de rotina, seguida de segunda avaliação endoscópica do cólon ascendente e ceco. O segundo grupo (G2) foi submetido à colonoscopia de rotina, seguida de segunda avaliação do cólon ascendente e ceco com cromoendoscopia com índigo carmim. Resultados: no total, foram analisados 203 pacientes, sendo 101 do G1 e 102 do G2. Novos pólipos foram identificados em ambos os grupos após a segunda avaliação com número significativamente maior de pólipos detectados nos pacientes do G2 (p=0,0001). O número de pacientes que apresentaram pelo menos um pólipo nas duas avaliações endoscópicas foi significativamente maior no G2 (53 ou 52% vs 27 ou 26,7%, p=0,0002). Na segunda avaliação endoscópica, o número de pólipos encontrados também foi significativamente maior no G2 (50 ou 76,9%) em relação ao G1 (15 ou 23,1%), p<0,000. Conclusão: a segunda avaliação com cromoendoscopia com índigo carmim aumenta a detecção de pólipos no cólon ascendente e no ceco.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUDS: Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Care Centers (Centros de Atenção Psicossocial, CAPSI) are dedicated centers for persistent psychiatric disorders, which provide an individualized therapeutic approach based on extra-hospital services. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the clinico-epidemiological profiles of the patients seeking interventions at the CAPSIs. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two CAPSI in São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Brazil. One CAPSI is dedicated to the treatment of alcohol- and drug-related disorders, and the other to the treatment of other mental disorders. METHODS: In July 2017, we reviewed all active medical records of these two CAPSI, and collected the patients information including sex, race, education, type of referral, initial complaints, psychiatric diagnoses, and medication utilization. RESULTS: Of the 233 patients, 69.5% were male and 42.5% lived with their immediate family. Most of the patients were referred from other health services. Complaints on admission included agitation and aggressive behavior (30.9%). Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was the most prevalent diagnosis (46.8%), followed by depressive disorder (13.8%). Of the patients, 81.5% were on regular medical follow-up and 70.3% were on a single medication only. CONCLUSION: Aggression complaints are the most prevalent in CAPSI, and diagnoses of ASD and psychotic disorders are more common. This situation differs from most CAPSI that present school complaints as the most prevalent, in which diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorders are likely to be more frequent. The epidemiological profile of each CAPSI should guide the implementation of human and structural resources targeting the most prevalent complaints and diagnoses.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar o perfil clínico e epidemiológico de pacientes submetidos a colecistectomia por vídeo no Hospital da Cruz Vermelha do Paraná, unidade de Curitiba, operados no período de setembro de 2016 a setembro de 2018, assim como a influência de comorbidades, sexo e idade avançada no prognóstico pós-operatório, durante o mesmo internamento. Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo analítico, com dados coletados por revisão de prontuários. Análises estatísticas realizadas, considerando nível de significância p < 0,05. Resultados: 389 casos foram incluídos, sendo 265 mulheres e 124 homens. A média de idade foi de 51,5 anos, 58,8% dos pacientes eram portadores de pelo menos uma comorbidade e 74,6% dos doentes tinham sobrepeso ou eram obesos. A incidência de complicações intraoperatórias foi de 1,3%, pós-operatórias de 3,8% e, a mortalidade, de 0,3%. Foram identificados fatores clínicos relacionados a pior prognóstico pós-operatório, como DM, HAS, presença de uma ou mais comorbidades e, destacadamente, idade avançada, que relacionou-se com maior tempo de internamento (p < 0,001), necessidade de UTI (p < 0,001), conversão para operação aberta (p = 0,003) e risco de complicações pós-operatórias (p < 0,001). Além disso, o sexo masculino foi preditivo para maior tempo de internamento (p = 0,003) e maior necessidade de UTI (p = 0,01). Conclusão: o perfil clínico-epidemiológico corresponde àquele exposto na literatura e a presença de comorbidades, o sexo masculino e a idade avançada são fatores preditivos de mau prognóstico na evolução pós-operatória de pacientes submetidos a colecistectomia videolaparoscópica.
ABSTRACT Objective: to assess clinical and epidemiological factors of patients undergoing video cholecystectomy at the Hospital da Cruz Vermelha do Paraná, Curitiba unit, operated from September 2016 to September 2018, as well as the influence of comorbidities, sex and advanced age on the postoperative prognosis, while in the hospital. Methods: Analytic retrospective study. The analyzed variables were obtained by the review of medical records. Statistical analyses were performed considering the significance level p < 0.05. Results: 389 patients, of whom 265 were women and 124 men, were included. The mean age was 51.5 years, 58.8% of the patients were diagnosed with at least one comorbidity, and 74.6% were overweight or obese. The incidence of intraoperative complications was 1.3%, postoperative 3.8% and, mortality, 0.3%. Some risk factors were identified as worse postoperative prognosis, such as Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, presence of one or more comorbidities and mainly, advanced age, which was related to longer hospitalization times (p < 0,001), need of intensive therapy (p < 0,001), conversion to open surgery (p = 0,003) and postoperative complications (p < 0,001). Furthermore, the male sex was predictive of longer hospitalization times (p = 0,003) and need of intensive therapy (p = 0,01). Conclusion: the presence of comorbidities, male sex, and advanced age are predictive factors of bad prognosis for patients undergoing video laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar cinco índices de seleção não paramétricos para a seleção de citros híbridos como porta-enxertos, enxertados com laranjeira 'Valência', com base em atributos horticulturais relevantes para a indústria de processamento de suco. Avaliaram-se 46 porta-enxertos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e cinco plantas na parcela, no período de 2009-2015, em cultivo de sequeiro. As médias das variáveis altura de planta, produção acumulada de frutos, eficiência produtiva de frutos, concentração de sólidos solúveis totais, rendimento de suco e tolerância à seca foram utilizadas para calcular os seguintes índices: multiplicativo (IEi), soma de classificação (IMMi), distância genótipo-ideótipo (DiI) e ranqueamento (IRKi, baseado em médias simples; e IRKii, baseado em normalização linear). Os índices foram eficientes em classificar os híbridos em relação ao desempenho geral. A correlação de Spearman mostrou alta similaridade entre a maioria dos índices não paramétricos, notadamente entre IRKi e IRKii. Os índices de ranqueamento, principalmente o IRKii, fornecem uma classificação mais coerente dos híbridos, o que permite a seleção de porta-enxertos mais produtivos e tolerantes à seca, para a produção de frutas de alta qualidade para processamento.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate five nonparametric selection indices for the selection of hybrid citrus rootstocks grafted with 'Valência' sweet orange, using horticultural traits relevant for the juice processing industry. Forty-six rootstocks were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates and five trees in the plot, in the period from 2009-2015, in a rainfed cultivation. The means of the variables plant height, accumulated fruit yield, fruit yield efficiency, total soluble solids concentration, juice yield, and drought-tolerance were used to calculate the following indices: multiplicative index (IEi), sum of classification (IMMi), genotype-ideotype distance (DiI), and ranking indices (IRKi, based on simple means; and IRKii, based on linear normalization). The indices were efficient to classify the hybrids in relation to general performance. Spearman’s correlation showed a high similarity between most nonparametric indices, notably between IRKi and IRKii. The ranking indices, mainly IRKii, provide a more coherent classification of the hybrids, which allows of the selection of more productive and drought-tolerant rootstocks to produce high-quality fruit for processing.

SUMMARY: The supracondylar process is a hook shaped projection of the humerus. It is located superior to its medial epicondyle. This anatomic variation is often presented together with the Struther’s ligament, a fibrous arcade that connects the supracondylar process to the medial epicondyle. Both structures have been associated with neurovascular bundle compression on the distal third of the arm, as the median and ulnar nerves and the brachial and ulnar arteries may pass through the osteofibrous canal that these variants create. The SciElo, Pubmed, Scopus, TRIP, MEDLINE, COCHRANE and ScienceDirect databases were searched with the term “supracondylar process” or “supracondyloid process” with the purpose of performing a meta-analysis of this bony spur. Heterogeneity between studies was evaluated using I2 estimation and the Cochran Q statistic test. A random effect model was used for all analysis. A total of twenty articles (26.415 humeri) were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of the supracondylar process was 0.68 % (95 % Confidence Interval: 0.47 % to 0.92 %). This variant was more commonly found in women than in men (statistically significant difference) and more commonly found on the left side than the right. The presence of the supracondylar process alone may induce neurovascular bundle compression. It can also be injured in traumatic or stress fractures. Knowledge of this variation and its prevalence may reduce misdiagnosis in radiographic images.
RESUMEN: El proceso supracondíleo es una proyección en forma de gancho del húmero. Se encuentra superior a su epicóndilo medial. Esta variación anatómica a menudo se presenta junto con el ligamento de Struther, una arcada fibrosa que conecta el proceso supracondíleo con el epicóndilo medial. Ambas estructuras se han asociado con la compresión del paquete neurovascular en el tercio distal del brazo, ya que los nervios mediano y ulnar y las arterias braquial y ulnar pueden pasar a través del canal osteofibroso que crean estas variantes. Se realizaron búsquedas en las bases de datos SciElo, Pubmed, Scopus, TRIP, MEDLINE, COCHRANE y ScienceDirect con el término "proceso supracondíleo" o "proceso supracondiloide" con el objetivo de realizar un metanálisis de este espolón óseo. La heterogeneidad entre los estudios se evaluó mediante la estimación I2 y la prueba estadística Cochran Q. Se utilizó un modelo de efectos aleatorios para todos los análisis. Un total de veinte artículos (26.415 húmeros) se incluyeron en este metanálisis. La prevalencia combinada del proceso supracondíleo fue del 0,68 % (intervalo de confianza del 95 %: 0,47 % a 0,92 %). Esta variante se encontró más comúnmente en mujeres que en hombres (diferencia estadísticamente significativa) y se encuentra más comúnmente en el lado izquierdo que en el derecho. La presencia del proceso supracondíleo solo puede inducir la compresión del paquete neurovascular. También puede lesionarse en fracturas traumáticas o por estrés. El conocimiento de esta variación y su prevalencia puede reducir el diagnóstico erróneo en imágenes radiográficas.

ABSTRACT The transmission of tobamovirus by tomato and pepper seeds is an important mean of virus introduction in crops. Therefore, detecting its presence in the seed becomes essential for the preventive control of virus diseases. In this study, a method was proposed for the detection of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) in tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) and Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) in pepper (Capsicum annum) seeds. Seed lots with different levels of incidence were analyzed by biological, serological, and molecular methods. Using DAS-ELISA technique, it was possible to detect TMV up to the limit rate of 1:170 (1 contaminated seed: total seeds) and the ToMV up to 1:200 in tomato seeds; PMMoV in pepper seeds was detected up to 1:140. The IC-RT-PCR detected the TMV and ToMV up to the limit of 1:400 and PMMoV up to the limit of 1:300. The assembled lots containing only 1 contaminated seed in 1000 (1:1000) were combined into 30 sub lots for DAS-ELISA analysis and 10 sub lots for IC-RT-PCR analysis. Both techniques, DAS-ELISA and IC-RT-PCR, were efficient to detect the three viruses in all analyzed samples, but the detection of tobamoviruses with RT-PCR and biological tests was not reliable. Based on the results of this study, in which a combination of seeds in sub lots was made to reduce the number of tests performed, it is possible to make significant savings in the cost of the diagnostic methods routinely conducted in official laboratories, with high efficiency and reliability.

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a methodology that uses water deficit induction to increase the frequency of hybrids in Citrus varieties that have a high and an intermediate level of polyembryony, respectively. The experiment examined the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotypes at three water stress intensities: 20, 40 and 100% of the pot capacity (PC). The generated fruits were harvested, and the seeds were counted. After germination, the number of nucellar and hybrid seedlings was determined. For ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotype, the highest hybrid frequency generated was 64.2%, which occurred at a PC of 40% and exceeded by 12% that occurring at a PC of 100%. For ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, the highest observed hybrid frequency was 21.75%, which occurred at a PC of 20% and was more than double the hybrid frequency of 8.57% observed at 100% of the PC.

Resumo Com o objetivo de avaliar o potencial genético de milho branco para canjica, foram avaliados 28 híbridos resultantes de cruzamentos dialélicos entre oito genitores, incluindo os parentais e as gerações S1. Foram estimadas as capacidades combinatórias e os níveis de heterose e depressão endogâmica. Os genitores utilizados foram os principais híbridos de milho branco pertencentes ao germoplasma brasileiro. As combinações HT 9332 x HT 392, IAC Nelore x HT 9332, IAC Nelore x HT 932 e IPR 119 x IAC Nelore são promissoras para programas de seleção recorrente recíproca para maior rendimento de grãos. O híbrido IPR 127 foi indicado como fonte de linhagens com características industriais favoráveis ao canjicamento. O híbrido IAC Nelore apresentou a menor estimativa de depressão por endogamia e foi recomendado para a extração de linhagens e participação em híbridos e compostos mais produtivos.
Abstract To assess the genetic potential of white corn for corn grits, 28 hybrids resulting from diallel crosses of eight parents, including parents and S1 generations, were evaluated. The combining abilities and levels of heterosis and inbreeding depression were estimated. The parents used were the main white maize hybrids of the Brazilian germplasm. The combinations HT 9332 x HT 392, IAC Nelore x HT 9332, IAC Nelore x HT 932, and IPR 119 x IAC Nelore are promising for reciprocal recurrent selection programs targeting higher grain yield. Hybrid IPR 127 was indicated as a source of industrial lines with favorable traits for dry-rolled corn production. Hybrid IAC Nelore had the lowest estimate of inbreeding depression and was recommended for the breeding of lines and participation in higher-yielding hybrids and composites.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Diferenças entre os gêneros na assistência técnica e extensão rural realizada por médicos veterinários: paradigma ou preconceito

A Medicina Veterinária é profissão relativamente antiga e, mesmo em tempos modernos, em determinados países ou regiões, a profisssional veterinária ainda encontra barreiras ao exercício pleno da profissão, tanto nas atividades de Assistência Técnica como nas de Extensão Rural. Este estudo objetivou verificar se existem diferenças entre os gêneros, no que se refere às atividades de Assistência Técnica e de Extensão Rural, realizadas por médicos veterinários no Estado de Goiás (Brasil) e, em caso de existência, analisar se os resultados podem ser considerados frutos de um paradigma ou de preconceito. O trabalho foi desenvolvido no Estado de Goiás, em 26 municípios, envolvendo 100 propriedades rurais, administradas por indivíduos de diferentes gêneros e perfis. Foram analisados questionários respondidos pelos proprietários, envolvendo cinco temas, compreendendo diferenças entre os gêneros, senso de organização profissional, relacionamento interpessoal, força física e conhecimento técnico. Na visão dos entrevistados, os homens foram considerados como detentores de maior aptidão para as atividades que exigem força física e, as mulheres, para o trabalho que requer maior senso de organização. Para as outras atividades, ambos os profissionais equipararam-se quanto ao seu desempenho, pois a maioria dos entrevistados alegou não ter preferência, em relação aos aspectos gênero, relacionamento interpessoal e conhecimento teórico. Concluiu-se que as diferenças entre os gêneros, nos desempemhos em Assistência Técnica e em Extensão Rural, realizadas por médicos veterinários no Estado de Goiás, foram identificadas quando os aspectos considerados são a força física e o senso de organização. Nos quesitos preferência pelo homem ou pela mulher, relacionamento interpessoal e conhecimento técnico, não houve distinções. Dessa forma, pode-se considerar a existência de um paradigma, não a de um preconceito.
The Veterinary Medicine is a relatively old profession. In some countries or regions, even in modern times, veterinary women still find obstacles in the profession. This study aimed to evaluate if there are differences between genders in veterinary Technical Assistance as well as in Rural Extension and analyzes whether the results can be considered a paradigm or a prejudice. The research was developed in 100 farms in 26 municipalities in the state of Goias. The farms were administrated by different genders and profiles. A questionnaire was applied to farmers involving five topics: differences between genders, professional organization, interpersonal relationship, physical strength and technical knowledge. In the interviewees' opinion, men were considered to have more ability for tasks which require physical strength; and women were considered to have more ability than men when the task involves organization. Regarding the other topics (interpersonal relationship, technical knowledge and differences between genders) both professionals were equivalent, because the majority of the interviewees claimed not to have preference for gender. Therefore, it was concluded that the differences between genders in Technical Assistance and Rural Extension performed by veterinarians were identified when it comes to physical strength and organization. In topics preference between men or women, interpersonal relationship and technical knowledge, there was not distinction between the genders. Then, the differences between genders can be considered a paradigm and not a prejudice.
