Introduction: The phase angle (PA) has been considered a sensitive tool to assess nutritional status and effectiveness of interventions dietetics. Objective: To evaluate the PA as an indicator of nutritional status and prognosis in critically ill patients. Methods: Prospective observational study of patients admitted to the Coronary Intensive Care Unit between May and October 2013. The PA was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis, PA was considered low below 5º values for men and 4.6º for women. The values obtained were related to other evaluation parameters of nutritional status: anthropometric (arm circumference - AC , triceps skinfold thickness - TST , corrected arm muscle area - AMAc and calf circumference - CC) and biochemical (total lymphocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit), in addition to clinical prognostic APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Disease Classification System II) and serum albumin. The tabulation and analysis were performed using SPSS version 13.0. Results: The sample consisted of 110 patients, in which an association was found between low AF and renal failure on dialysis (p < 0.001), % adequacy AC (p = 0.028), % adequacy of TST (p = 0.043), albumin level (p = 0.042), anemia (p = 0.040) and APACHE II (p = 0.012) scores. The AF was positively correlated with CC (p= 0.043) and inversely with the length of hospitalization (p = 0.006). Conclusions: PA in the ICU may be useful to identify early and malnourished patients as a prognostic indicator.

Introducción: El ángulo de fase (AF) viene siendo considerado una herramienta sensible para evaluar el estado nutricional y la efectividad de las intervenciones dietoterápicas. Objetivo: Evaluar el AF como indicador del estado nutricional y pronóstico en pacientes críticos. Métodos: Estudio prospectivo observacional con pacientes admitidos en Unidades de Cuidado Intensivo Coronarias, entre Mayo y Octubre de 2013. El AF se determinó por medio del análisis por Bioimpedancia Eléctrica, considerándose bajo AF valores inferiores a 5º para los hombres y 4,6º para las mujeres. Los valores obtenidos se relacionaron con otros parámetros de evaluación del estado nutricional: antropométricos (circunferencia del brazo - CB, pliegue cutáneo triciptal - PCT, área muscular del brazo corregida - AMBc circunferencia de pantorrilla - CP) y bioquímico (recuento total de linfocitos, hemoglobina, hematocrito), además de los pronósticos clínicos APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Disease Classification System II) y albúmina sérica. La tabulación y análisis de los datos se realizaron a través del paquete estadístico SPSS versión 13.0. Resultados: La muestra se compuso por 110 pacientes, en la cual se verificó asociación entre bajo AF e insuficiencia renal en diálisis (p<0,001), % de adecuación de CB (p=0,028), % de adecuación de PCT (p=0,043), hipoalbuminemia (p=0,042), anemia (p=0,040) y puntuación APACHE II (p=0,012). El AF se correlacionó positivamente con la CP e inversamente con el tiempo de internación (p=0,006). Conclusiones: El AF en UCI parece ser útil para identificar a pacientes desnutridos precozmente y como indicador pronóstico.

A new series of 5-benzylidene-2-[(pyridine-4-ylmethylene)hydrazono]-thiazolidin-4-ones 4a-l have been synthesized. These compounds were designed by a molecular hybridization approach. 2-[(Pyridine-4-ylmethylene)hydrazono]-thiazolidin-4-ones 3a-d were also obtained and used as intermediates to give the target compounds. The in vitro antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities were evaluated for both series. The intermediate 3b showed considerable antibiotic activity against B. subtilis and C. albicans. In the cytotoxic activity compounds 3b (IC50= 4.25 ± 0.36 µg/mL) and 4l (IC50= 1.38 ± 0.04 µg/mL) were effective for inhibition of human erythromyeloblastoid leukemia (K-562) and human lung carcinoma (NCI-H292) cell lines, respectively.

Twelve novel 4-thiazolidinone derivatives (2a-l) have been synthesized by reacting formilpyridine thiosemicarbazones (1a-l) and anhydride maleic in toluene. Their chemical structures were confirmed by IR, ¹H and 13C NMR. The new compounds were submitted to in vitro evaluation against pathogenic Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. The findings obtained showed that the compounds 2a, 2d, 2e and 2g were effective against some of the bacterial strains used, whereas the compounds 2d, 2e and 2i exhibited a moderate antifungal activity against the yeast strains evaluated. An initial structure activity relationship (SAR) was established.

Derivatives of N-tryptophyl-5-benzylidene-2,4-thiazolidinedione (7a-c) and N-tryptophyl-5-benzylidene-rhodanine (7d-f) were prepared by condensation of the intermediates 5 and 6 with different benzaldehydes, respectively. Their structural elucidation was carried through by IR, ¹H NMR and MS. The acute toxicity and antiedematogenic activity of the compounds 7b,c and 7e,f were evaluated. The data did not reveal any sign of toxicity, and no mortality was registered. As indomethacin (10 mg/kg; v.o.), the antiedematogenic activity of the compounds 7b (50 mg/kg; v.o.) and 7e, 7f (50 or 100 mg/kg; v.o.) against carrageenan-induced paw edema was verified at time intervals of 180 min.

Este trabalho se propôs a avaliar a performance clínica de dois tipos de cerâmica: IPS Empress, Ivoclar-Vivadent - IPS e Duceram Plus, Degussa - D. Foram realizadas 86 restaurações por apenas um operador, sendo 44 IPS e 42 D. Vinte e sete pré-molares e 59 molares, num total de 33 onlays e 53 inlays, foram cimentadas em 35 pacientes de ambos os sexos, com idade média de 35 anos. A cimentação das restaurações foi realizada com cimento resinoso dual (Variolink, Ivoclar-Vivadent) sob isolamento absoluto e avaliadas no baseline e após 06 meses, mediante o critério U.S.P.H.S. modificado, quanto à sensibilidade pulpar, reincidência de cárie, fratura, reprodução de cor, descoloração marginal, integridade marginal e textura superficial. Adicionalmente foram realizadas radiografias e fotografias. No baseline foi obtida a classificação Bravo nos itens sensibilidade pulpar - IPS (2,27%); D (7,14%); reprodução de cor - IPS (2,27%); D (2,38%) e textura superficial - IPS (2,27%); D (11,90%). Após 06 meses foram analisadas as 86 restaurações, nas quais foi constatada a classificação Bravo para os itens reprodução de cor - IPS (6,82%); D (2,38%); textura superficial - IPS (2,27%); D (9,52%); descoloração marginal - IPS (6,82%); D (4,76%) e integridade de superfície- IPS (4,55%); D (7,14%). Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos ao Teste Estatístico de Fisher e McNemar. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as cerâmicas. Pode-se concluir que os dois tipos de cerâmica demonstraram uma performance clínica satisfatória após 06 meses.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical performance of two types of ceramics: a slurry-powder ceramic (Duceram Plus, Degussa) - D and a hot-pressed leucite-based glass-ceramic (IPS Empress, Ivoclar Vivadent) - IPS. Eighty-six restorations, 44 IPS and 42 D, were made by one operator. A total of 33 onlays and 53 inlays on twenty-seven premolars and 59 molars were cemented in 35 patients of both sexes, mean age 35 years. All restorations were cemented with the dual-resin cement (Variolink, Ivoclar-Vivadent) under rubber dam and were evaluated at the baseline and after six months, using the modified U.S.P.H.S. criteria for postoperative sensitivity, secondary caries, fracture, color match, marginal discoloration, marginal integrity and surface texture. Additionally radiographs and intraoral photographs were carried out. At baseline 86 restorations were analyzed and all of them received Alfa rating, except for the following that received Bravo rating for postoperative sensitivity - IPS (2.27%); D (7.14%); for color match - IPS (2.27%); D (2.38%) and for surface texture - IPS (2.27%); D (11.90%). After 6 months 100% of the restorations were analyzed and the following received Bravo rating: color match - IPS (4.55%) and D (9.52%); surface texture - IPS (2.27%) and D (11.9%); marginal discoloration - IPS (6.82%) and D (4.76%) and marginal integrity - IPS (4.55%) and D (7.14%). The results were submitted to the Fisher and McNemar Statistical Tests. No significant differences were noticed between the two ceramics. Both ceramics demonstrated satisfactory clinical performance after six months.
