ABSTRACT Introduction: During pregnancy, the iron requirement increases to meet the optimal growth of the fetus and prevent iron deficiency anemia-related complications in the mother. However, in sickle cell disease (SCD) primarily due to repeated blood transfusions and hemolysis-induced recycling of iron, its supplementation during pregnancy remains questionable and may be harmful. Methods: Twenty-five pregnant women with homozygous SCD and 25 pregnant women with normal hemoglobin variants were included as cases and control, respectively. Pregnancy and sickle cell anemia (SCA) were diagnosed using standard protocols. The serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), percentage transferrin saturation and C-reactive protein were estimated, as per the manufacturer’s protocol. The complete blood count was performed. The unpaired ‘t-test’ was performed using the SPSS v23.0 and the principal component analysis (PCA) was performed using the online software MetaboAnalyst for statistical analysis. Main Results: The studied cases had significantly lower mean hemoglobin and higher mean corpuscular volume (MCV), compared to controls. The mean serum-iron, serum-ferritin and percentage transferrin-saturation in the cases were significantly higher than that of the controls, while the TIBC was lower in the cases (p < 0.0001). The mean level of serum iron, ferritin, percentage transferrin saturation and TIBC were 309.44 ± 122.40mcg/dl, 860.36 ± 624.64ng/ml, 42.6 ± 17.30% and 241.32 ± 96.30 mcg/dl, respectively, in the cases and 95.36 ± 41.90mcg/dl, 122.28 ± 49.70ng/ml, 15.83 ± 3.10% and 492.6 ± 149.40mcg/dl in the controls, respectively. Higher MCV, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) with lower hemoglobin (Hb) were noted in the cases. The PCA revealed that the cases were more heterogeneous in terms of the variability of the iron status and hematological indices than the controls. Conclusion: The current study shows iron sufficiency in most cases of pregnancy with SCA and suggests that evaluation of iron status must be made before initiating iron prophylaxis in pregnant women with SCA, especially in regions having a high prevalence of sickle cell hemoglobinopathy.

Abstract Sustained release matrix tablets of 100 mg losartan potassium HCl were fabricated with two release retarding polymers namely HPMC K100 M and affinisol by direct compression method. Nine trial formulations were prepared by varying content of these polymers, each from 50 mg to 100 mg; keeping the total weight of the tablet 310 mg. The best formulation was selected based on in vitro drug release profile for 12 hours conducted in Type II dissolution apparatus at 50 rpm and water as dissolution medium. Pre-compression parameters such as bulk density, tap density, Carr’s index and Hausner ratio were evaluated for the selected tablet. The tablets were subjected to thickness, weight variation test, drug content, hardness and friability. Drug release kinetics, surface morphology and accelerated stability study were investigated for that selected formulation. Formulation F4 with the composition of 75 mg HPMC K100M and 100 mg affinisol was selected as the best formulation that extended the drug release up to 12 hours. Pre-compression parameters and other tableting properties were within the Pharmacopoeia limit. Release kinetics analysis proved non-fickian zero-order drug release and that was further confirmed by surface morphology of the tablets before and after dissolution study visualized by SEM. The developed formulation was found to be stable for one month stored at 60 ○C.

Resumen Cirrhinus mrigala es una carpa originaria del sistema fluvial del río Ganges al norte de India, de cual no hay información sobre la variación morfométrica de sus poblaciones naturales en esta cuenca. Por lo tanto, para promover la optimización de su manejo, se evaluó la estructura poblacional usando morfometría basada en puntos de referencia de C. mrigala. En total se midieron 381 individuos de C. mrigala, recolectados en 10 puntos de 10 ríos de la cuenca del Ganges. Se utilizaron 12-puntos de referencia de sistema de redes truss para generar 66 variables morfométricas, de donde se excluyó la longitud estándar y se utilizaron 65 variables. Las medidas transformadas se utilizaron para un análisis de varianza univariado, análisis de componentes principales y análisis de función discriminante. El análisis de varianza mostró diferencias en todos los 65 caracteres morfométricos estudiados. Se extrajeron ocho componentes principales de los 65 caracteres, que suman el 94.1 % de la variación. El análisis de función discriminante de las 65 variables produjo ocho variables discriminantes que contribuyeron en la varianza a nivel general. La primera función discriminante representó 37.9 %, mientras que la segunda 23.5 % de la variación entre grupos. En el análisis de función discriminante, 39.1 % de lo agrupado por validación cruzada fue correctamente clasificado en la asignación general de individuos, lo que indica baja diferenciación entre las poblaciones, lo que puede ser un bajo aislamiento de las poblaciones para las medidas morfométricas. Otra posible razón para la baja diferenciación morfométrica es la existencia de un ancestro común en el periodo prehistórico y la migración de individuos entre ríos. En el futuro, la aplicación de marcadores genéticos moleculares junto con estudios morfométricos será un método efectivo para examinar el componente genético de la relación fenotípica entre áreas geográficas y facilitar el desarrollo de recomendaciones de manejo.

Abstract Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton, 1822) is an Indian major carp originally inhabitant of the Ganga river system in Northern India. No information is available on morphometric variation in natural populations of C. mrigala from Ganga river basin. Therefore, to promote management optimization, this study was undertaken to evaluate the population structure on landmark-based morphometric variations of this commercially important species in Ganges. A total of 381 fish samples of C. mrigala were collected from 10 locations of 10 rivers belonging to Ganges basin. A 12-landmark truss network system was used to generate 66 morphometric variables were transformed (standard length was excluded from the final analysis retaining 65 variables). Transformed measurements were employed to univariate analysis of variance, principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA). Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences in all the 65 transformed morphometric characters studied. Eight principal components were extracted from 65 significant characters accounting for 94.1 % of the variation. Forward stepwise discriminant function analysis of the 65 significant variables produced eight discriminating variables. DFA extracted eight discriminating functions contributed overall to the variance. The first discriminant function (DF) accounted for 37.9 % while second DF accounted for 23.5% of the among-group variability. In DFA, 45.7 % original while 39.1 % of cross-validated grouped cases were correctly classified in the overall assignment of individuals, indicating low distinction among the stocks of all the species i.e. low isolation of the stocks for the morphometric measurements. Common ancestry in the prehistoric period and migration of individuals between the rivers could be the possible reason for the observed low level of morphometric differentiation among wild mrigal populations. In future, the application of molecular genetic markers along with morphometric studies would be an effective method to examine the genetic component of phenotypic relatedness between geographic regions and to facilitate the development of management recommendations.

Resumen El pez bagre de mantequilla, Ompok bimaculatus (Bloch, 1794), está ampliamente distribuído en las planicies y regiones submontañosas de la India, pero el conocimiento sobre su potencial reproductivo es deficiente. Este estudio evalua el potencial reproductivo comparativo (en términos de proporción de sexos, época de desove, tamaño del cuerpo a la primera madurez gonadal, índice gonadosomático, fecundidad, dimensión del huevo, peso de los huevos, etc.) de los peces muestreados (n=1223) de seis ríos tropicales de la cuenca del Ganges durante enero 2011 y diciembre 2013. Las hembras tenían peso y longitud relativamente mayor que los machos. El tamaño corporal al 50% de la primera madurez gonadal (L50%) osciló entre 228-262mm en las hembras y 198-247mm en los machos. La estrategia reproductiva tiene dos categorías, es decir, fecundidades altas y bajas. Las correlaciones entre la fecundidad absoluta y la longitud total, así como el peso corporal y el peso de las gónadas, fueron significativas (p <0,05) y positivas en toda la población.

Abstract The silurid butter catfish, Ompok bimaculatus (Bloch, 1794), is widely distributed in the plains and sub-mountain regions of India, but not enough is known about its reproductive potential is still insufficient. The present study evaluated the comparative reproductive potential (in terms of sex ratio, spawning season, body size at first gonadal maturity, gonadosomatic index, fecundity, egg dimension, egg weight etc.) of fish (n=1223) from six tropical tributaries of the Ganges basin during January 2011-December 2013. The females had relatively greater weight and length. The body size at 50% first gonadal maturity (L50%) ranged between 228-262mm in females and 198-247mm in males. The population has high and low fecundities. The correlations between absolute fecundity and total length, as well as between body weight and gonad weight, were significant (p<0.05) and positive in all the population.

ResumenLa carpa mayor de la India, Labeo rohita es una especie de distribución amplia y de importancia económica en las aguas dulces tropicales de India y países cercanos. El presente estudio trata las re laciones talla-peso de 1 033 especímenes que fueron recolectados del canal principal del río Ganges y sus cinco principales drenajes, durante marzo 2009 y junio 2012. La longitud de los machos en diferentes ríos oscilaba entre 16 a 92cm y para las hembras entre 16 a 94cm. El cre cimiento de esta especie fue alométrico positivo (b >3) para machos, hembras y sexos combinados. Además, la gama de coeficiente de de terminación (r2) en los hombres se registró desde 0,978 a 0,989 y para las mujeres que iba desde 0,958 a 0,985. Los datos generados en la pre sente investigación serán útiles para el biólogo pesquero y agencias de conservación en el manejo y conservación de las poblaciones silvestres de esta especie.

Abstract The Indian Major Carp, Labeo rohita, is a geographically widespread and economically important food fish species in tropical freshwater of India and adjacent countries. We studied the length-weight relationships of 1 033 specimens collected from the main channel of Ganga river and its five major drainages from March 2009 to July 2012. The length of males ranged from 16 to 92cm (females: 16 to 94cm). The growth is allometric positive (b>3) for males, females and pooled sexes. The coefficient of determination (r2) in males ranged from 0,978 to 0,989 and for females from 0,958 to 0,985. Data from field populations are scarce and our results will be useful in the manage ment and conservation of L. rohita populations in its natural range.

The present study was conducted to measure various biometric parameters of intact/normal acrosomes (AC) collected respectively from caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and vas deferens of Black Bengal buck. Giemsa stained acrosomes were measured after camera lucida drawings. Observations revealed dimensional characters of the acrosomal cap diminished gradually and significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) during spermatozoa maturation phases in the different regions of the excurrent duct. Shape and size of the AC were also found to be influenced significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) by the age and body weight of the animals. The structural modification along with decrease in the morphology of the AC reflected one of the maturational indexes of the male gametes in Black Bengal buck.

El presente estudio se realizó para medir diversos parámetros biométricos del acrosoma (AC) intacto/normal recogido desde la cabeza, cuerpo y cola del epidídimo y vas deferens de la Cabra Black Bengal. Los AC teñidos con Giemsa fueron medidos después de la captura con cámara lúcida. Las observaciones revelaron caracteres dimensionales del capuchón acrosomal que disminuyeron gradualmente y de manera significativa (p <0,01, p <0,05) durante fases de maduración espermatática en las diferentes regiones del conducto. La forma y tamaño del AC también fueron influenciados de manera significativa (p <0,01, p <0,05) por la edad y el peso corporal de los animales. La modificación estructural junto con los cambios morfológicos del AC refleja uno de los índices de maduración de los gametos masculinos de la Cabra Black Bengal.

Labeo rohita is a member of the Indian major carp species and originally an inhabitant of the Ganga river network in India. It is among the top ten aquaculture species of the world. Since there is a lack of information on the growth pattern of the wild populations of this species, this study aimed at evaluating the pattern of age and growth, to support the development of effective management plans. A total of 1 082 samples of L. rohita were obtained from May 2009 to July 2012 in six drainages of the Ganga basin. Scales of the fish were used to determine the age and growth by analyzing the annual rings growth. Out of six populations, a maximum 8 age classes were recorded from two rivers Betwa and Sharda. The back-calculated lengths at 8 age class ranged from 86.22cm to 91.66cm. However, for the rest of rivers up to 7 age classes were recorded. Among growth parameters, specific rate of length increase Cl and specific rate of weight increase Cw showed decreasing trend, and three distinct life stages of L. rohita were recorded based on growth constant data Clt. Analysis of variance ANOVA of the back-calculated length data set of six populations indicated a significant difference p0.05. All three populations showed significant variation in length attainment during 1 and 3 age groups, while two populations showed significant variation in length attainment during the 2 and 7 age classes. Additionally, analysis of age frequency at different length intervals indicated that with increase in age class, number of fish samples was reduced. Since the pattern of life history traits of L. rohita have not been attempted in the recent past; therefore, this study will guide fisheries biologists about the current stock structure of this fish across different spatial scale of the Ganga basin.

Labeo rohita es de las principales especies de carpas hindúes y originalmente un habitante de la red del río Ganges en la India. Se encuentra en la lista de las diez especies principales de la acuacultura mundial. Puesto que no hay información sobre el patrón de crecimiento de las poblaciones silvestres de esta especie, este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el patrón de edad y crecimiento para apoyar el desarrollo de planes de gestión eficaces. Un total de 1 082 muestras de L. rohita se obtuvieron en el periodo de mayo 2009 a Julio 2012, en seis desembocaduras de la cuenca del río Ganges. Las mediciones de los peces fueron utilizadas para determinar la edad y el crecimiento mediante el análisis de los anillos de crecimiento anuales. De las seis poblaciones, se registró un máximo de categoría de edad 8 en dos ríos Betwa y Sharda. Las longitudes de retrocálculo en la edad 8 variaron entre 86.22-91.66cm. De los parámetros de crecimiento, la tasa específica de aumento de longitud Cl y la tasa específica de aumento de peso Cw mostraron una tendencia decreciente, y basado en los datos constantes de crecimiento Clt se registraron distintas fases del ciclo de vida de L. rohita. El análisis de variancia ANOVA de los datos de longitud de retrocálculo de seis poblaciones indicó una diferencia significativa p0.05. Las tres poblaciones mostraron una variación significativa en la obtención de la longitud durante los grupos de edad 1 y 3, mientras que dos poblaciones mostraron una variación significativa en lograr la longitud durante los tipos de edades 2 y 7. Además, el análisis de la frecuencia de la edad en diferentes intervalos de longitude indicó que, con el aumento de la categoría de la edad, se redujo el número de muestras de peces. Dado que el patrón de rasgos de la historia de la vida de L. rohita no se ha tratado en el pasado reciente, este estudio será una guía para los biológos de peces acerca de la actual estructura de la población de estos peces en diferentes escalas espaciales de la cuenca del Ganges.

In India, freshwater aquatic resources are suffering from increasing human population, urbanization and shortage of all kind of natural resources like water. To mitigate this, all the major rivers have been planned for a river-interlinking through an interlinking canal system under a huge scheme; yet, the baseline information on ecological conditions of those tropical rivers and their fish communities is lacking at present. In view of that, the present study was undertaken to assess the ecological condition by comparing the trophic metrics of the fish community, conservation status and water chemistry of the two tropical rivers of the Ganga basin, from October 2007 to November 2009. The analysis of trophic niches of the available fish species indicated dominancy of carnivorous (19 species) in river Ken and omnivorous (23 species) in Betwa. The trophic level score of carnivorous species was recorded similar (33.33%) in both rivers, whereas omnivorous species were mostly found in Betwa (36.51%) than Ken (28.07%). Relatively undisturbed sites of Betwa (B1, B2 and B3) and Ken (K2, K3 and K5) were characterized by diverse fish fauna and high richness of threatened species. The higher mean trophic level scores were recorded at B4 of Betwa and K4 of Ken. The Bray-Curtis index for trophic level identified the carnivorous species (>0.32) as an indicator species for pollution. Anthropogenic exposure, reflected in water quality as well as in fish community structure, was found higher especially in the lower stretches of both rivers. Our results suggest the importance of trophic metrics on fish community, for ecological conditions evaluation, which enables predictions on the effect of future morphodynamic changes (in the post-interlinking phases), and provide a framework and reference condition to support restoration efforts of relatively altered fish habitats in tropical rivers of India.

En la India, los recursos acuáticos de agua dulce están sufriendo debido a la creciente población humana, la urbanización y la escasez de todo tipo de recursos naturales como el agua. Para mitigar esto, se ha planificado bajo un amplio esquema que todos los grandes ríos estén interconectados a través de un sistema de canales, sin embargo, la información básica sobre las condiciones ecológicas de los ríos tropicales y sus comunidades de peces es escasa en la actualidad. En vista de ello, el presente estudio se realizó para evaluar el estado ecológico, mediante la comparación de los parámetros tróficos de la comunidad de peces, estado de conservación y el agua de los dos ríos tropicales de la cuenca del Ganges, de octubre 2007 a noviembre 2009. El análisis de los nichos tróficos de las especies de peces disponibles indican dominancia de carnívoros (19 especies) en el río Ken y omnívoros (23 especies) en Betwa. El nivel trófico de las especies carnívoras fue similar en ambos ríos (33.33%), mientras que las especies omnívoras fueron mayores en Betwa (36.51%) que en Ken (28.07%). Sitios relativamente inalterados de Betwa (B1, B2 y B3) y Ken (K2, K3 y K5) se caracterizaron por la alta diversidad y riqueza de especies de peces amenazadas. Los puntajes medios más altos del nivel trófico se registraron en B4 de Betwa y K4 de Ken. El índice de Bray-Curtis para el nivel trófico identificó las especies carnívoras (>0.32) como indicadoras de contaminación. Exposición antropogénica, reflejada en la calidad del agua, así como en la estructura de la comunidad de peces, fue más alta, especialmente en los tramos inferiores de ambos ríos. Nuestros resultados sugieren la importancia de métricas tróficas en la comunidad de peces, para la evaluación de las condiciones ecológicas, lo que permite hacer predicciones sobre el efecto de futuros cambios morfodinámicos (en las fases de post-interconexión), y proporcionar un marco y condición de referencia para apoyar los esfuerzos de restauración de hábitat de peces relativamente alterados en los ríos tropicales de la India.

In India, freshwater environments are experiencing serious threats to biodiversity, and there is an urgent priority for the search of alternative techniques to promote fish biodiversity conservation and management. With this aim, the present study was undertaken to assess the fish biodiversity within and outside a river protected area, and to evaluate whether the protected river area provides some benefits to riverine fish biodiversity. To assess this, the pattern of freshwater fish diversity was studied in river Gerua, along with some physicochemical conditions, from April 2000 to March 2004. For this, a comparison was made between a 15km stretch of a protected area (Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary), and an unprotected one 85km downstream. In each site some physicochemical conditions were obtained, and fish were caught by normal gears and the diversity per site described. Our results showed that water temperature resulted warmest during the pre-monsoon season (25ºC) and low during the winter (14-15ºC); turbidity considerably varied by season. In the protected area, a total of 87 species belonging to eight orders, 22 families and 52 genera were collected; while a maximum of 59 species belonging to six orders, 20 families and 42 genera were recorded from the unprotected areas. Cyprinids were found to be the most dominant genera and Salmostoma bacaila was the most numerous species in the sanctuary area. Other numerous species were Eutropiichthys vacha, Notopterus notopterus, Clupisoma garua and Bagarius bagarius. The results indicated more species, greater abundances, larger individuals, and higher number of endangered fishes within the sanctuary area when compared to the unprotected area. Analysis on the mean abundance of endangered and vulnerable species for the evaluated areas in the sanctuary versus unprotected ones indicated significant differences in fish abundance (p<0.05). These results showed that this riverine protected area could be important for conservation and management of fish diversity in the region, especially for resident and threatened species.

En India los ambientes de agua dulce están experimentando una grave amenaza para la biodiversidad; ante esto es urgente investigar técnicas alternativas que promuevan la biodiversidad y manejo de los peces. El presente estudio se realizó con el objetivo de evaluar la biodiversidad de los peces dentro y fuera del área protegida del río Gerua, India, para evaluar si el área protegida provee beneficios a la biodiversidad de los peces fluviales. Para evaluar el patrón de diversidad de los peces de agua dulce y las condiciones físico-químicas se estudió el río entre abril 2000 y marzo 2004. Se realizó una comparación en un tramo de 15km de un área protegida (Santuario de Vida Silvestre Katerniaghat) y un tramo sin protección de 85km aguas abajo. En cada sitio se obtuvieron algunas variables fisicoquímicas, los peces fueron capturados con varias artes de pesca y se describió la diversidad por sitio. Nuestros resultados mostraron que la temperatura del agua es mayor como resultado de la temporada de pre-monzón (25ºC) y menor durante el invierno (14-15ºC), la turbidez varía considerablemente según la temporada. En el área protegida, se recolectaron un total de 87 especies pertenecientes a ocho órdenes, 22 familias y 52 géneros, mientras que un máximo de 59 especies pertenecientes a seis órdenes, 20 familias y 42 géneros se registraron en las áreas no protegidas. El género más abundante pertenece a los Ciprínidos y Salmostoma bacaila fue la especie más abundante en el área del santuario. Otras especies numerosas fueron: Eutropiichthys vacha, Notopterus notopterus, Clupisoma garúa y Bagarius bagarius. Los resultados indicaron más especies, mayores abundancias, individuos más grandes y mayor número de peces con categoría de peligro de extinción dentro del área del santuario cuando se compara con la zona no protegida. El análisis de la abundancia promedio de peces en peligro de extinción y vulnerables de las áreas evaluadas en el santuario frente a las desprotegidos indicó diferencias significativas (p<0.05). Los resultados mostraron que esta área protegida ribereña podría ser importante para la conservación y manejo de la diversidad de los peces en la región, especialmente para los residentes y las especies amenazadas.

Location of the cytoplasmic droplets (CD) and their dimensions varied significantly (p<0.01) when sperm cells traverse through the regions of caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and vasdeferens respectively. The gradual diminution in the morphology of CD between the epididymal regions were related significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05). Caudal shift of the CD, along with regression in size and finally their exclusion from the sperm cells reflected one of the most important events in the maturation process of male gametes in Black Bengal buck.

La ubicación de los droplets citoplásmicos (CD) y sus dimensiones variaron significativamente (p <0,01) cuando las células espermáticas atraviesan a través de las regiones de cabeza, cuerpo y cola de epidídimo y vas deferens respectivamente. La disminución gradual en la morfología de los CD entre las regiones del epidídimo se relacionaron de forma significativa (p <0,01, p <0,05). El desplazamiento caudal de las CD, junto con la regresión en el tamaño y, finalmente, su exclusión desde los espermatozoides refleja uno de los eventos más importantes en el proceso de maduración de los gametos masculinos en la cabra Black Bengal.

Spot blotch resistant (IBON 18) and susceptible (RD 2508) lines were crossed to investigate inheritance of resistance and to identify simple sequence repeats (SSRs) associated with resistance. F1 resistance was intermediate and suggested additive nature of inheritance. Three additive genes was noted in the distribution of F3, F4 and F5 generations. In F6 and F6-7, the quantitative and qualitative approaches also suggested the control of three resistance genes. The parents and the RILs (F6/F6-7) were grown in four environments and spot blotch severity recorded. Forty five SSR primers, specific for chromosomes 1 (7H) and 5 (1H), were applied. Of these, 12 were polymorphic between the parents, and between the resistant and susceptible bulks. Three markers BMS 32, BMS 90 and HVCMA showed association with resistance, which was further confirmed through selective genotyping. The co-segregation data on the molecular markers (BMS 32, BMS 90 and HVCMA) and spot blotch severity on 173 RILs was analyzed by single marker linear regression approach. Significant regression suggested linkage among BMS 32, BMS 90 and HVCMA and the three resistant genes (designated as Rcs-qtl-5H-1, Rcs-qtl-5H-2 and Rcs-qtl-1H-1.) respectively. These markers explained 28%, 19% and 12% of variation respectively, for spot blotch resistance among the RILs.

En Rajapur, una aldea de Bengala Occidental (India) afectada por el arsénico, se llevó a cabo un estudio exhaustivo a fin de determinar el grado de contaminación de las aguas subterráneas por arsénico y los efectos de esa contaminación en los residentes. Se utilizó la técnica de espectrometría de absorción atómica, método híbrido de inyección en flujo (FI-HG-AAS), para medir las concentraciones de arsénico en el agua y en muestras biológicas. Los signos cutáneos de arsenicosis fueron determinados por dermatólogos. Del total de 336 pozos entubados con bomba manual existentes en Rajapur, el 91% (307/336) contenían arsénico a concentraciones superiores a 10 µg/l, y el 63% (213/336) contenían más de 50 µg/l. Se midieron también el tipo de arsénico en las aguas subterráneas, la variación de las concentraciones de arsénico en función de la profundidad de los pozos y la concentración de hierro en los pozos. Se examinó la pìel de 825 de 3500 residentes; de ellos, 149 tenían lesiones causadas por la exposición al arsénico. Así pues, muchos lugareños podrían estar afectados de forma asintomática. An in-depth study was carried out in Rajapur, an arsenic-affected village in West Bengal, India, to determine the degree of groundwater contamination with arsenic and the impact of this contamination on residents. The flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HG-AAS) method was used to measure arsenic concentrations in water and biological samples. Dermatologists recorded the dermatological features of arsenicosis. Out of a total of 336 hand-pumped tube-wells in Rajapur, 91% (307/336) contained arsenic at concentrations > 10 µg/l, and 63% (213/336) contained arsenic at > 50 µg/l. The type of arsenic in groundwater, the variation in concentrations of arsenic as the depth of tube-wells changed, and the iron concentration in the wells were also measured. Altogether 825 of 3500 residents were examined for skin lesions; of these, 149 had lesions caused by exposure to arsenic. Of the 420 biological samples collected and analysed, 92.6% (389) contained arsenic at concentrations that were above normal. Thus many villagers might be subclinically affected. Although five arsenic-filtering devices had been installed in Rajapur, it appears that villagers are still exposed to raised concentrations of arsenic in their drinking-water. Detailed village-level studies of arsenic-affected areas in West Bengal are required in order to understand the magnitude of contamination and its effects on people. Villagers are ill-informed about the dangers of drinking arsenic-contaminated water. The contamination could be brought under control by increasing community awareness of the dangers and implementing proper watershed management techniques that involve local people.

A Rajapur, village touché par la pollution à l'arsenic du Bengale occidental, Inde, on a réalisé une étude en profondeur pour déterminer le degré de contamination des eaux souterraines par l'arsenic et l'impact de cette contamination sur les habitants. Parmi les 336 puits tubulaires équipés de pompes manuelles de Rajapur, 91 % (307/336) contenaient de l'arsenic à des concentrations > 10 µg/l et 63 % (213/336) renfermaient plus de 50 µg/l d'arsenic. On a également déterminé le type d'arsenic présent dans les eaux souterraines, la variation des concentrations d'arsenic en fonction de la profondeur des puits tubulaires et la concentration de fer dans ces puits. On a examiné au total 825 des 3500 habitants à la recherche de lésions cutanées : 149 d'entre eux présentaient des lésions provoquées par l'exposition à l'arsenic. Parmi les 420 échantillons biologiques recueillis et analysés, 92,6 % (389) contenaient de l'arsenic à des concentrations supérieures à la normale. Ainsi, de nombreux villageois pourraient être affectés à un niveau subclinique. Bien que cinq dispositifs de filtrage de l'arsenic aient été installés à Rajapur, il s'avère que les villageois sont encore exposés à des concentrations élevées d'arsenic dans l'eau de boisson. Des études détaillées à l'échelle du village des zones touchées par l'arsenic du Bengale occidental sont nécessaires pour avoir une idée de l'ampleur de la contamination et de ses effets sur les personnes. Les villageois sont mal informés des dangers liés à la consommation d'eau contaminée par l'arsenic. Il serait possible de maîtriser cette contamination en sensibilisant les communautés à ces dangers et en mettant en œuvre des techniques de gestion des bassins hydrologiques appropriées, impliquant la population locale.
