RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o estágio inicial de regeneração em áreas anteriormente desmatadas e ocupadas por gado, na Floresta Ombrófila Mista Alto-Montana, no Parque Nacional de São Joaquim, Planalto Catarinense. Realizou-se o estudo em duas áreas em estágio sucessional inicial, que foram previamente inventariadas nos anos de 2014 e 2018. A amostragem em cada área foi por meio de 20 parcelas por área, de 10 x 10 m, distribuídas em transecções de 20 x 100 m. Em 2022, as áreas foram novamente inventariadas, sendo todos os indivíduos com altura ? 1 m e DAP < 5 cm medidos (altura) e, no caso de recrutas, identificados, quantificando-se, também, indivíduos mortos e que se tornaram adultos (? 5 cm). Foram obtidas a riqueza efetiva (Número de Hill) e taxas de dinâmica para os períodos de inventário (2014-2018-2022). Os resultados evidenciaram o avanço da sucessão nas áreas, em virtude do aumento da diversidade de espécies, assim como a redução da rotatividade da dinâmica. ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the early regeneration stage in previously deforested and cattle-occupied areas of high montane mixed forest in São Joaquim National Park, in the "Planalto Sul Catarinense" region. The study was conducted in two areas in the early successional stage, which had already been inventoried in 2014 and 2018. In each area, 20 plots of 10 x 10 m were established in transects of 20 x 100 m. ABSTRACT Backgrounds: Urban forests can provide citizens with various types and quantities of ecosystem services. However, the contribution of isolated forest fragments to this process and its value are not well understood. Therefore, our main goal was to analyze the patterns of ecosystem service delivery by three forest fragments along an urban-to-rural gradient. Carbon storage was estimated using three different models (general and local), with input variables such as diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, and wood density. Rainfall interception was assessed using water collectors placed inside the forest fragment, at the border, and outside, throughout the four seasons. Data were collected from three forest fragments of different types (urban, periurban, and rural), each covering an area of 1.0 hectare. Results: Isolated forest fragments did not significantly differ (p>0.01) in terms of carbon stocks compared to a protected area. The urban fragment had a carbon stock of 33.70 mg.ha-1, while the rural fragment had a carbon stock of 37.19 mg.ha-1. Regarding rainfall interception, there were no significant differences (p>0.01) among the forest fragments. The highest average rainfall interception percentage (58.65%) was observed during the summer. The capacity for rainfall interception changed from the border (lower) to the center of the fragment (higher) in a similar manner for both isolated and connected forest fragments. Conclusion: Isolated Forest fragments can provide ecosystem services (carbon storage and rainfall interception) in the same way as connected forest fragments in the periurban and rural places, like in protected areas. ABSTRACT Climate change represents one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. We investigate how climate change will affect the future potential distribution of tree species in subtropical high montane habitats in the Atlantic Forest and identify potential climate refuges for these species. The most frequent and exclusive species in this ecosystem were selected and geographic coordinates were compiled. The maximum entropy algorithm was used for climatic niche modeling. Two scenarios for 2061-2080 were considered for future predictions, one low impact (RCP 4.5) and one high impact (RCP 8.5). Isothermality, mean temperature in the driest quarter, mean temperature in the hottest quarter, rainfall in the driest month, and rainfall in the hottest quarter were the variables that best explained the climatic niche of the majority of species. The areas of potential species occurrence were reduced by 48.37 % (± 13.63 %) (RCP 4.5) and 62.49 % (± 21.87 %) (RCP 8.5) on average. The potential area of Crinodendron brasilense Reitz & L.B.Sm. decreased the most, by 82.11 % (RCP 4.5) and 90.06 % (RCP 8.5), respectively. High elevation areas in the south of Brazil were identified as priorities for conservation to ensure that climate refuges for high montane forest species are maintained in the future. Resumo O estudo objetivou avaliar o grau de conservação, analisar a similaridade florística e estrutural dos estratos lenhosos e herbáceo de duas comunidades florestais em situação de ecótono e avaliar as espécies indicadoras de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM) e Floresta Ombrófila Densa (FOD). Foram instaladas 30 parcelas de 100 m2 em cada área de estudo (Oeste e Leste) e mensurados três estratos lenhosos e um herbáceo. Cada espécie foi classificada conforme o grupo ecológico, ocorrência fitogeográfica e categoria de ameaça. Foram selecionados outros 13 estudos de ecossistemas similares, para a análise de agrupamento e espécies indicadoras. Foram registradas 213 espécies pertencentes a 63 famílias. As famílias mais ricas foram Myrtaceae, Lauraceae e Fabaceae. Destacaram-se nos estratos lenhosos da área Oeste Araucaria angustifolia, Allophylus edulis e Cupania vernalis. Abstract The study aimed to evaluate the degree of conservation, analyse the structural and floristic similarity of the woody and herbaceous layers of two ecotone forest communities and evaluate the indicator species of a Mixed Ombrophilous Forest (MOF) and Dense Ombrophilous Forest (DOF). We outlined 30 sampling units of 100 m2 in each area (West and East), where we measured three woody and one herbaceous layers. Each species was classified into ecological groups, phytogeographic distribution and conservation status. We selected other 13 studies performed on similar ecosystems to carry out cluster and indicator species analyses. We registered 213 species, arranged into 63 families. The richest families were Myrtaceae, Lauraceae and Fabaceae. In the woody layers Araucaria angustifolia, Allophylus edulis and Cupania vernalis highlighted in West area, while Casearia sylvestris, Cyathea phalerata and Ilex paraguariensis highlighted in East area. Ctenitis paranaensis predominates in herbaceous layer of both areas. Our cluster analysis has formed two groups (MOF; DOF), including both study areas in MOF group. Resumo Objetivou-se verificar a composição florístico-estrutural das plântulas regenerantes a partir do banco de sementes de três áreas em recuperação pós-distúrbios antrópicos, em ambientes alto-montanos do Parque Nacional de São Joaquim. As áreas 1 (A1) e 2 (A2) foram originadas da regeneração após o corte de remanescentes florestais e a área 3 (A3) foi originada da regeneração de campo nativo após práticas de pastoreio. As três áreas encontram-se protegidas há quase dez anos após a finalização dos distúrbios. Foram instaladas transecções de 20 × 100 m em cada área, subdivididas em 20 parcelas de 10 × 10 m, nas quais foram coletadas amostras de solos e serapilheira, totalizando 60 amostras. Os materiais coletados foram conduzidos à casa de vegetação, onde foram submetidos ao mesmo tratamento, com irrigação diária por aspersão. Foi realizada a avaliação quali-quantitativa mensal das plântulas emergentes, identificando-as e classificando-as quanto à origem (nativa ou exótica) e às formas de vida. Foram amostradas 5.604 plântulas, distribuídas em 62 táxons. Houve predominância de espécies herbáceas (74,2%) e nativas (67,7%), sendo Cyperus odoratus L. e Juncus capillaceus Lam. as mais abundantes. As áreas originadas a partir de desmatamentos apresentaram maior heterogeneidade de espécies e hábitos e maior densidade de plântulas regenerantes do banco de sementes, quando comparado com a área de Campo de Altitude. Conclui-se que o banco de sementes das áreas alto-montanas estudadas apresenta potencial de colonização imediata após distúrbios, com elevada riqueza e densidade de espécies herbáceas, que garantem o recobrimento do solo e, assim, o início e o suporte necessário para o avanço da dinâmica sucessional.

Abstract We aimed to verify the floristic-structural composition of regenerative seedlings of seed banks from areas under anthropic post-disturbance restoration process, in “Planalto Sul Catarinense” region, upper-montane environments. In each of three sites (Area 1, 2 and 3) at São Joaquim National Park, protected for almost ten years, but with different land-use history, we allocated one 20 x 100 m transect, sub-divided in 20 plots, where a total of 60 samples of soil and litter were collected. While the Areas 1 (A1) and 2 (A2) were originally covered by natural forest, the Area 3 (A3) can be considered as cattle raising grassland. In a greenhouse, all the collected material was submitted to the same procedure, with daily sprinkler irrigation. After the seed germination in trays, we performed a monthly qualitative and quantitative evaluation of emergent seedlings that were identified and classified according to origin (native and exotic) and life form. In one year, 5,604 seedlings were counted, belonging to 62 taxa. There was predominance of herbs (74.2%) and native species (67.7%), being Cyperus odoratus L. and Juncus capillaceus Lam. the most abundant. When compared to the original grassland area, those originated from past deforestation showed a greater species and life form heterogeneity as well as greater seedling density emergence from the collected seed bank. We concluded that the studied seed banks have the potential to support a prompt seedling colonization after disturbances, ensuring the soil cover, and thus, the necessary initial support for the advance of successional dynamics.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as alterações temporais na composição florística e estrutura da regeneração em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista sem intervenções há décadas, nos anos de 2012 e 2017. A área experimental foi composta por 20 parcelas circulares de 2,5 m de raio, onde foi realizada a quantificação dos regenerantes; a medição das alturas individuais das árvores e a identificação do grupo ecológico ao qual cada espécie pesquisada pertencia. Todos os indivíduos com altura mínima de 0,50 m e circunferência a altura do peito menor do que 15 cm foram medidos. Aproximadamente 12.382 ind ha-1 foram encontrados em 2012 e 11.185 ind ha-1 em 2017. Somente as seguintes espécies tiveram aumento de densidade em 2017 em comparação com o ano 2012: Dalbergia frutescens (280,3 ind ha-1), Myrsine coriacea (178,3 ind ha-1), Allophylus guaraniticus (76,4 ind ha-1), Bernadia pulchella (51,0 ind ha-1), Casearia obliqua (50,9 ind ha-1), Casearia decandra (25,5 ind ha-1) e Luehea divaricata (25,5 ind ha-1). As demais espécies tiveram um saldo negativo ou desapareceram da área. A análise dos grupos ecológicos indicou gradual substituição de espécies clímax tolerantes à sombra por espécies pioneiras e clímax exigentes de luz. As espécies mais representativas identificadas em ambas ocasiões não sofreram grandes alterações, indicando que são mais propensas a permanecer na área estudada. Os resultados indicaram que o remanescente estudado se encontra em fase avançada de sucessão; no entanto, apresenta alterações pontuais que refletem sua dinâmica florística e ecológica.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the temporal changes in the floristic composition and regeneration structure in a remnant of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest that has been without interventions for decades. Two surveys were undertaken for the study; the first survey was conducted in 2012, and the second in 2017. The experimental area comprised 20 circular plots of 2.5 m radius, where was it performed the quantification of the regenerants, measurement of individual tree heights, and identification of the ecological group that each surveyed species belonged. All individuals with a minimum height of 0.50 m and a circumference at breast height of less than 15 cm were measured. Approximately 12,382 ind ha-1 were found in 2012 and 11,185 ind ha-1 in 2017. Only the following species increased their abundance per hectare in 2017 compared to the previous survey: Dalbergia frutescens (280.3 ind ha-1), Myrsine coriacea (178.3 ind ha-1), Allophylus guaraniticus (76.4 ind ha-1), Bernadia pulchella (51.0 ind ha-1), Casearia obliqua (50.9 ind ha-1), Casearia decandra (25.5 ind ha-1), and Luehea divaricata (25.5 ind ha-1). The remaining species had a negative balance or disappeared from the study. Ecological group analysis indicated the gradual replacement of shadow-tolerant climax species by pioneer and light-demanding climax species. The most representative species identified on both occasions did not undergo major changes, indicating that they are more likely to remain in the studied area. The results indicated that the studied remnant forest is in an advanced phase of succession; however, it presents punctual alterations that reflect its floristic and ecological dynamics.

Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi compreender a influência das variáveis edáficas e da cobertura foliar florestal no desenvolvimento da regeneração natural em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (MOF) no Sul do Brasil. A análise de componentes principais (PCA) foi utilizada para identificar a heterogeneidade das variáveis edáficas e de cobertura foliar entre as unidades amostrais, a partir da qual foram selecionadas as variáveis com maior correlação com as unidades amostrais. Posteriormente, essas variáveis foram utilizadas para explicar os padrões florísticos por meio da análise de correspondência canônica (CCA). A PCA mostrou que o índice de área foliar explica apenas parte da variação dos dados e que as variáveis de solo estudadas não são homogêneas entre as unidades amostrais. No eixo canônico principal da CCA, Miconia cubatanensis, Myrcia multiflora, Casearia decandra e Myrsine coriacea apresentaram maior correlação com variáveis associadas à acidez do solo. Em contraste, Allophylus guaraniticus e Cupania vernalis apresentaram alta correlação com variáveis relacionadas às bases. A análise das características físico-químicas do solo pode permitir a identificação mais precisa de espécies indicadoras para a restauração de remanescentes de MOF no Sul do Brasil.

Abstract The present study explored the influence of edaphic variables and forest leaf cover on natural regeneration in a remnant of a Mixed Ombrophilous Forest (MOF) in southern Brazil. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to elucidate the heterogeneity of edaphic and leaf cover variables among the sampling units, and the variables exhibiting the strongest correlations with the sampling units were selected. Subsequently, these variables were used to explain floristic patterns using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). In PCA, the leaf area index explained only some variation in the data, and there was obvious heterogeneity in edaphic variables among the sample units. In the main canonical axis of the CCA, Miconia cubatanensis, Myrcia multiflora, Casearia decandra, and Myrsine coriacea showed greater correlation with variables associated with soil acidity. In contrast, Allophylus guaraniticus and Cupania vernalis showed a high correlation with variables related to bases. Overall, the analysis of soil physicochemical characteristics can allow for the more precise identification of indicator species for the restoration of remnant of MOF in southern Brazil.

RESUMO Embora as espécies estejam continuamente expostas a variações do clima ao longo do tempo, há uma preocupação crescente em relação ao ritmo acelerado de mudança climática a que estão expostas atualmente, pois o clima é determinante na distribuição geográfica de animais e plantas. O presente trabalho avaliou o nicho climático e o impacto da mudança climática para o período de 2061-2080 sobre as áreas de ocorrência geográfica das espécies indicadoras dos agrupamentos de florestas aluviais da porção centro-sul da Mata Atlântica e do Pampa brasileiro. Foram consideradas 19 variáveis climáticas para o clima contemporâneo e futuro. Os nichos climáticos das espécies foram modelados por meio do algoritmo Maxent. A adequabilidade das espécies do grupo Paraná-Uruguai foi influenciada fortemente por variáveis relacionadas à temperatura, enquanto a adequabilidade das espécies do grupo Atlântico relacionou-se com precipitação e temperatura. Estima-se redução na área de adequabilidade climática para a maioria das espécies consideradas, com comportamento semelhante para os dois grupos abordados. As espécies tenderão a ocupar uma posição mais austral, utilizando as áreas de maior altitude, latitude e próximas ao litoral do Brasil como refúgios climáticos, destacando essas áreas como estratégicas para a conservação.

ABSTRACT Although species are continually exposed to variations in climate over time, there is growing concern about the accelerated pace of climate change to which they are currently exposed, as climate is determinant in the geographic distribution of animals and plants. This study evaluated the climatic niche and impact of climate change in the 2061-2080 period on areas of occurrence of indicator tree species of alluvial forests in the south-central portion of the Atlantic Forest and Brazilian Pampa. Nineteen climatic variables were considered for the contemporary and future climates. The species’ climatic niches were modeled using the Maxent algorithm. Climatic adequacy for species in the Parana-Uruguay group was strongly influenced by variables related to temperature, while adequacy for species in the Atlantic group was related to rainfall and temperature. A decrease in the area of climatic adequacy is estimated for most species considered, with similar behavior in the two groups assessed. The species tend to occupy a more southern position, using areas of higher altitude, latitude and proximity to the Brazilian coast as climate refuges, highlighting these areas as strategic for environmental conservation.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a dinâmica da comunidade arbórea adulta e regenerante em um fragmento de Floresta Nebular em Urubici, Santa Catarina, sujeito ao impacto de gado. Os inventários dos indivíduos arbóreos adultos (diâmetro na altura do peito - DAP ≥ 5 cm) foram realizados em 2011, 2015 e 2019, e dos regenerantes arbóreos (DAP < 5 cm), em 2013, 2015, 2017 e 2019. Para o componente adulto, a amostragem foi realizada em 25 parcelas de 20 × 20 m alocadas de forma sistemática no fragmento. Em cada uma dessas parcelas também foram coletadas variáveis edáficas e topográficas. O componente regenerativo arbóreo foi avaliado em subparcelas conforme classe de tamanho das plantas (classe 1: plantas com altura de 0,15 cm até 1 m, em 5 m2; classe 2: plantas com altura acima de 1 m e até 3 m, em 10 m2, e classe 3: plantas com altura maior que 3 m e DAP < 5 cm, em 20 m2). Foram calculadas as taxas demográficas para a comunidade e as populações de indivíduos adultos e regenerantes. Utilizaram-se Árvores de Regressão (AR), para testar a influência das variáveis ambientais sobre as taxas de dinâmica dos regenerantes, e Análises dos Componentes Principais (PCA), para sintetizar os gradientes representados pelas taxas de dinâmica entre populações. No último período, 2015-2019, a floresta apresentou perda em indivíduos e em área basal, o que sugere um processo de desestruturação. Para os indivíduos regenerantes, as variáveis mais influentes na dinâmica estiveram relacionadas com a fertilidade do solo, os teores de H+Al, a cota altitudinal e a compactação dos solos. Para a conservação da área, medidas, como o cercamento contra entrada de gado, são essenciais para a manutenção da floresta ao longo do tempo.

Abstract The objective of this research was to investigate the dynamics of the adult and regenerating tree community in a Cloud Forest fragment in Urubici, Santa Catarina, subject to livestock impact. Inventories of adult tree individuals were carried out in 2011, 2015, and 2019, and of regenerative trees, in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. For the adult component, sampling was performed within 25 20 x 20 m systematically allocated plots. Within each plot, soil and topographic variables were also collected. The regenerative component was evaluated in subplots according to plant size classes (class 1: plants with a height from 0.15 cm to 1 m in 5 m2; class 2: plants with height above 1 m and up to 3 m in 10 m2; and class 3: plants with height above 3 m and DAP < 5 cm in 20 m2). The demographic rates for the community of adult and regenerating individuals were determined. Regression Trees (RT) were used to test the influence of environmental variables on the dynamics rates of the regenerative component, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed to synthesize the population dynamics rates. In the last period, 2015-2019, the forest showed a loss of individuals and basal area, which suggests a de-structuring process. For regenerating individuals, the most influential variables in the dynamics were soil fertility, H+Al levels, altitudinal quota, and soil compaction. For the conservation of the area, measures such as fencing to prevent cattle from entering are essential for the maintenance of the forest over time.

Resumo Avaliou-se a dinâmica do componente arbóreo e regenerante em uma floresta nebular, na região do Planalto Sul Catarinense, com o objetivo de se conhecer o processo de desenvolvimento da vegetação ao longo do tempo. Para isso, foram instaladas parcelas permanentes onde foram caracterizados os componentes adulto e regenerante, respectivamente, nos anos de 2011 e 2013. Todas as espécies amostradas foram classificadas quanto à guilda de regeneração em pioneiras, climácicas exigentes em luz e climácicas tolerantes ao sombreamemto. No ano de 2015, foi realizado o segundo inventário dos componentes vegetacionais, sendo determinado o crescimento dos sobreviventes (somente adultos) e contabilizados os indivíduos recrutados e mortos. Para cada uma das populações, foram determinadas as taxas de mudança líquida em número de indivíduos (adultos e regenerantes) e em área basal (adultos). Foram realizados testes de proporções para verificar se a representatividade das diferentes guildas de regeneração se alterou entre os anos avaliados. Os resultados indicaram que a floresta se encontra em um processo de estruturação, caracterizado pelo ganho em número de indivíduos e em área basal. Por outro lado, observou-se estabilidade na riqueza e na representatividade das guildas de regeneração, com destaque para a maior participação de espécies classificadas como clímax exigentes em luz. Conclui-se que a floresta avaliada se encontra em estruturação, com o favorecimento da regeneração de espécies exigentes em luz.

Abstract The dynamics of adult and regenerative tree species components was assessed in a cloud forest in the South Plateau of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, seeking a better understanding of the process of vegetation development. To this end, permanent sampling plots were allocated, where the adult and regenerative components were characterized, respectively, in 2011 and 2013. All surveyed species were classified according to regeneration guilds into pioneer, light-demanding climax, and shade-tolerant climax. In 2015, a second tree species component survey was conducted to determine the growth of surviving individuals (adults) and count the recruited and dead individuals. For each population, the net change rates for individuals (adults and regenerative) and basal area (only adults) were determined. Proportion tests were conducted to verify whether representativeness of the regeneration guilds changed over the study period. The results showed that the forest investigated is undergoing a structuring process characterized by gains in number of individuals and basal area. In contrast, stability in species richness and representativeness of regeneration guilds was verified, with highlight for light-demanding climax species. In conclusion, the assessed forest is undergoing a structuring phase that favors the regeneration of light-demanding species.

SUMMARY: Ecological succession is one of the most important processes in forest ecosystems, still poorly understood in the highland Araucaria forests of Southern Brazil. Here we investigated this process by describing functional composition changes in response to a vegetation successional mosaic in four forest fragments in the municipality of Urubici, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Two fragments were classified as in advanced stage of succession and two were classified in early stage. The following functional traits were determined: wood density, leaf area, specific leaf area, dispersal syndrome and leaf phenology. For each fragment, we determined the community weighted mean (CWM) and the functional diversity (RaoQ). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t and Mann-Whitney tests and Principal Components Analysis. We found that the successional stage is a relevant source of functional heterogeneity. At the advanced-successional stage, tree communities have harder woods, more membranous and semi-deciduous leaves and higher functional diversity. Conversely, at the early successional stages, forests have softer wood, more coriaceous leaves and lower functional diversity. We concluded that the studied forests showed a high functional composition heterogeneity, partially determined by a successional mosaic. While perennial species with lower values of specific leaf area and wood density predominated in the early successional areas, semi-deciduous species with higher values of specific leaf area and wood density prevailed in the late successional ones.

RESUMEN: La sucesión ecológica es uno de los procesos más importantes en los ecosistemas forestales, aún poco conocido en los bosques de Araucaria del sur de Brasil. Con el objetivo de evaluar la organización funcional del componente arbóreo en diferentes estados sucesionales, el presente estudio fue realizado en cuatro fragmentos de bosque de araucaria de alta montaña en el Parque Nacional São Joaquim, en el municipio de Urubici, estado de Santa Catarina. Dos fragmentos fueron considerados en avanzado estado de sucesión y dos en una etapa inicial. Se determinaron los siguientes atributos funcionales: densidad de madera, área foliar, área foliar específica, síndrome de dispersión y régimen de renovación foliar. Para cada fragmento, se determinaron la media ponderada de las comunidades (CWM) y la diversidad funcional (RaoQ). Los datos fueron analizados por medio de estadísticas descriptivas, pruebas t y Mann-Whitney, y análisis de componentes principales. Observamos que la etapa sucesional es una fuente relevante de heterogeneidad funcional. En la fase de sucesión avanzada, las comunidades arbóreas tienen maderas más duras, hojas más membranosas y semicaducifolias, y una mayor diversidad funcional. En las fases sucesionales iniciales, los bosques tienen una madera más suave, hojas más coriáceas y una menor diversidad funcional. Concluimos que los bosques estudiados mostraban una alta heterogeneidad de composición funcional, parcialmente determinada por el mosaico sucesional. Mientras que las especies perennes con valores más bajos de área foliar específica y de densidad de madera predominaron en las partes de sucesión inicial, las especies semicaducifolias con valores más altos de área foliar específica y de densidad de madera prevalecieron en las de sucesión tardía.

SUMMARY: The understanding of the succession process is a fundamental condition in defining strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of forest ecosystems. Therefore, we aimed at testing which ecological factors affect short-term successional changes in the upper-montane forests of the “Planalto Sul Catarinense” Region, Brazil. We evaluated the influence of propagules source, soil seed bank, edaphic and topographic variables, nucleating elements and natural regeneration floristic-structural composition on demographic rates of tree-shrub regenerating component in three disturbed open vegetation areas at São Joaquim National Park. We inventoried the regenerative component in 2014, 2015 and 2016, within one 20x100 m transect in each area. Afterwards, demographic rates were determined for each period. The influence of explicative variables on demographic rates of the regenerating component was tested through the Generalized Least Square (GLS) model. We found an increment in both individuals and richness over time. When analyzing the influence of the explanatory variables on the speed of the successional process, we observed that only the floristic-structural composition of the natural regeneration was determinant. We conclude that the speed of the represented succession is, to a large extent, a feature related to the phase of the successional trajectory in which the vegetation is found.

RESUMEN: Se busca evaluar los factores ecológicos que afectan los cambios sucesionales en los bosques de la alta montaña de la región "Planalto Sul Catarinense", Brasil. Se analizó la influencia de la fuente de propágulos, banco de semillas del suelo, variables edáficas y topográficas, elementos nucleadores y composición florístico-estructural de la regeneración natural en las tasas demográficas del componente de regeneración de árboles y arbustos en tres áreas de vegetación abierta perturbada en el Parque Nacional Nacional de São Joaquim. Se inventarió el componente regenerativo en 2014, 2015 y 2016, dentro de un transecto de 20x100 m en cada área. Entonces, se determinó las tasas demográficas para cada período. La influencia de las variables explicativas en las tasas demográficas del componente de regeneración se evaluó mediante el modelo de mínimos cuadrados generalizados (GLS). Se encontró un incremento tanto en los individuos como en la riqueza a lo largo del tiempo. Al analizar la influencia de las variables explicativas sobre la velocidad del proceso sucesorio, se observó que solo la composición florístico-estructural de la regeneración natural fue determinante. Por lo tanto, se puede inferir que la velocidad de sucesión representa una característica inherente a la fase sucesional de la vegetación. Se concluye que el proceso de sucesión se desarrolló de forma diferente entre áreas, con el pastizal presentando un proceso de invasión leñosa.

RESUMO O entendimento dos fatores que determinam as distribuições geográficas de espécies arbóreas é um objetivo de grande importância na ecologia florestal. Por isso, neste trabalho investigamos os nichos ambientais para três espécies de Myrtaceae, da Floresta Atlântica Subtropical (BSAF), que faz parte de um hotspot global para conservação da biodiversidade. Com base em revisão de literatura selecionamos três espécies de Myrtaceae, em três importantes formações florestais nesta região: Floresta Ombrófila Densa, FOD (planícies litorâneas e serras associadas), Floresta Ombrófila Mista, FOM, e Floresta Estacional Decidual, FED (áreas planálticas continentais). As coordenadas geográficas foram obtidas a partir do banco de dados BIEN. Como variáveis explicativas, consideramos altitude, clima, cobertura de nuvens e classes de solos. O espaço ambiental ocupado por cada par de espécies foi sintetizado por meio de uma Análise de Componentes Principais (PCA), a partir do qual verificamos a sobreposição de nichos e calculamos estatísticas de similaridade e equivalência de nichos. As espécies selecionadas para FOD, FOM e FED foram, respectivamente, Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC., Myrcia guianensis (Aubl.) DC. e Campomanesia xanthocarpa O.Berg. C. xanthocarpa apresentou distribuição geográfica mais restrita do que as duas espécies de Myrcia, que ocorrem desde a América Central, até o Sul do Brasil. A distribuição das espécies foi determinada fundamentalmente por gradientes de temperatura e de precipitação. Apenas C. xanthocarpa e M. guianensis, representativas das formações florestais planálticas, apresentaram equivalência de nicho. Como conclusão, observamos que ambas espécies de Myrcia apresentam maior amplitude de nicho, com C. xanthocarpa apresentando caráter mais subtropical, com distribuição mais restritiva ao Sul e Sudeste do Brasil.

ABSTRACT The understanding of factors determining species geographic distribution is a fundamental aim of ecology. We investigated the environmental niche for three Myrtaceae species in the Brazilian Subtropical Atlantic Forest (BSAF), part of a global conservation hotspot. Based on a literature review, we selected one representative Myrtaceae species in three important forest types in this region: Evergreen Rain Forest (coastal plains and associated mountains ranges); Araucaria Forest, and Seasonal Deciduous Forest (continental upland areas). Geographical coordinates of their distribution were obtained from the BIEN database. As explanatory variables, we considered altitude, climate, cloud cover, and soil classes. We summarized the environmental space occupied by each pair of species using Principal Components Analysis, determined niche overlaps, and applied statistical tests to verify niche equivalences and similarities. The selected species in Evergreen Rain Forest, Araucaria Forest, and Seasonal Deciduous Forest were Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC., Myrcia guianensis (Aubl.) DC., and Campomanesia xanthocarpa O.Berg., respectively. C. xanthocarpa showed a more restricted geographic distribution than the two Myrcia species that occur from central America to southern Brazil. Species’ geographic distribution were fundamentally determined by temperature and rainfall regimes. Only C. xanthocarpa and M. guianensis, from uplands forest formations, showed environmental niche equivalence. In conclusion, we found that both species of Myrcia showed high climatic niche amplitudes occurring throughout the climatic gradient, while C. xanthocarpa was more subtropical, distributed mostly in the south and southeast of Brazil.

Resumo Espécies invasoras têm ocasionado a perda de biodiversidade no mundo todo por ocuparem o lugar de nativas. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a regeneração natural ao longo do tempo em um fragmento florestal invadido por Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton e Ligustrum sinense Lour. no sul do Brasil, a fim de quantificar essa invasão. Para isso, foram alocadas cinco transecções em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Lages (SC), sendo cada transecção dividida em parcelas com diferentes setores de distâncias da borda e em subparcelas para avaliação do componente regenerativo. Em 2012, os regenerantes de espécies arbóreas que se encontravam nas subparcelas foram identificados, plaqueteados e divididos nas seguintes classes: classe 1 _ plantas com altura entre 10 cm e 1 m; classe 2 _ plantas com altura entre 1 e 3 m; classe 3 _ plantas com altura maior que 3 m e diâmetro medido à altura do peito (DAP) menor que 5 cm. Em 2014, esses indivíduos foram reavaliados, contabilizando os indivíduos mortos e recrutas e enquadrando os sobreviventes e recrutas nas atuais classes. Foram calculadas as taxas de mortalidade, recrutamento, mudanças de classe e mudança líquida. Os dados foram analisados por meio de uma análise de componentes principais (ACP) e tabela de contingência. Conclui-se que as espécies superaram a fase inicial do processo de invasão, demonstrando elevado incremento populacional na área estudada. Ainda, ficou evidenciado o particionamento espacial entre as espécies nativas e as exóticas, o que sugere a existência de competição interespecífica, cuja consequência pode ser a extinção local de representantes do grupo autóctone.

Abstract The replacement of native species by invasive species has caused a worldwide loss of biodiversity. This study aimed to evaluate the natural regeneration over time in a forest fragment invaded by Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton and Ligustrum sinense Lour. in southern Brazil, in order to quantify this invasion. To do so, five transects were allocated in a fragment of Araucaria Forest in Lages, Santa Catarina state, with each transect divided into plots in different categories of distance from the edge and into sub-plots for the evaluation of the regenerative component. In 2012, the regenerating tree species identified in the sub-plots were tagged and classified according to height classes: Class 1, plants with height between 10 cm and 1 m; class 2, plants with height between 1 and 3 m; and Class 3, plants with a height greater than 3 m and DBH (diameter measured at breast height) less than 5 cm. In 2014, these individuals were re-evaluated, counting the dead and recruited individuals and classifying the survivors and recruits into the existing height classes. Rates of mortality, recruitment, net change, and height class changes were calculated. The data were analyzed by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and contingency table. It was concluded that the species overcame the early stage of the invasion process, demonstrating great population growth in the study area. Also, a spatial partitioning between native and exotic species was observed, suggesting the existence of interspecific competition, the result of which may be the local extinction of species from the autochthonous group.

Resumo O presente estudo objetivou analisar a dinâmica do componente arbóreo em floresta com araucária em função da distância da borda, em Santa Catarina, Brasil. Foram realizados levantamentos da vegetação em 2011 e 2015, pelo método de parcelas permanentes, em cinco transeções contendo dez parcelas de 200 m2 cada, sendo as cinco primeiras parcelas (0-50 m) definidas como setor borda e as cinco últimas (50-100 m) como interior. Em 2011, os indivíduos arbóreos foram inventariados e em 2015 os sobreviventes e mortos foram quantificados e os recrutas incorporados ao levantamento. Foram calculadas as taxas de mortalidade e recrutamento e as espécies foram classificadas em guildas de regeneração. Os resultados demonstraram que a dinâmica da comunidade não diferiu entre os setores, porém as guildas de regeneração apresentaram diferentes performances em função da distância da borda, com espécies existentes em luz favorecidas na borda e espécies tolerantes ao sombreamento no interior. Conclui-se que a fragmentação florestal tem o potencial de impactar negativamente o componente arbóreo na floresta com araucária.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the tree component dynamics in an araucaria forest in function of fragment edge distance in the Santa Catarina state, Brazil. To do so, we conducted the vegetation surveys in 2011 and 2015, through permanent plots, in five sampling transects, containing ten 200 m2 plots for each one. The first five plots (0-50 m) were defined as edge sector and the last five plots (50-100 m) were considered as interior sector. In 2011, tree individuals were surveyed, with the recruit and dead individuals counted in 2015. The rates of mortality and recruitment were determined, and the species were classified into regeneration guilds. The study showed that there was no difference in tree community dynamics between the analyzed sectors, but the regeneration guilds presented different performance in function of edge distance, with light-demanding species succeeding in edge and shade-tolerant species performing better in the interior. We conclude that forest fragmentation has the potential to impact negatively the tree component in Araucaria forest.
