Resumo Fundamento A pandemia de COVID-19 interferiu na prestação de atendimento a doenças cardiovasculares na América Latina. No entanto, o efeito da pandemia nos volumes de procedimentos cardíacos diagnósticos ainda não foi quantificado. Objetivo Avaliar (1) o impacto de COVID-19 nos volumes de diagnóstico cardíaco na América Latina e (2) determinar sua relação com a incidência de casos de COVID-19 e as medidas de distanciamento social. Métodos A International Atomic Energy Agency realizou uma pesquisa mundial avaliando mudanças nos volumes diagnósticos cardíacos decorrentes da COVID-19. Foram obtidos os volumes diagnósticos cardíacos dos locais participantes para março e abril de 2020 e comparados com março de 2019. Foram coletados dados de distanciamento social a partir dos Relatórios de mobilidade da comunidade de Google e a incidência de COVID-19 por país a partir de Our World in Data. Resultados Foram realizadas pesquisas em 194 centros que realizam procedimentos diagnósticos cardíacos, em 19 países da América Latina. Em comparação com o mês de março de 2019, os volumes dos procedimentos diagnósticos cardíacos diminuíram 36% em março de 2020 e 82% em abril de 2020.As maiores reduções ocorreram em relação aos testes de estresse ecocardiográfico (91%), testes ergométricos de esteira (88%) e escore de cálcio por tomografia computadorizada (87%), com pequenas variações entre as sub-regiões da América Latina. As mudanças em padrões de distanciamento social (p < 0,001) estavam mais fortemente associadas com a redução do volume do que a incidência de COVID-19 (p = 0,003). Conclusões A COVID-19 foi associada a uma redução significativa de procedimentos diagnósticos cardíacos na América Latina, a qual foi mais relacionada ao distanciamento social do que ao aumento da incidência da COVID-19. São necessários melhor equilíbrio e timing de medidas de distanciamento social e planejamento para manter o acesso ao atendimento médico durante um surto pandêmico, especialmente em regiões com alta mortalidade cardiovascular.
Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the delivery of care for cardiovascular diseases in Latin America. However, the effect of the pandemic on the cardiac diagnostic procedure volumes has not been quantified. Objective To assess (1) the impact of COVID-19 on cardiac diagnostic volumes in Latin America and (2) determine its relationship with COVID-19 case incidence and social distancing measures. Methods The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing changes in cardiac diagnostic volumes resulting from COVID-19. Cardiac diagnostic volumes were obtained from participating sites for March and April 2020 and compared to March 2019. Social distancing data were collected from Google COVID-19 community mobility reports and COVID-19 incidence per country from the Our World in Data. Results Surveys were conducted in 194 centers performing cardiac diagnostic procedures, in 19 countries in Latin America. Procedure volumes decreased 36% from March 2019 to March 2020, and 82% from March 2019 to April 2020. The greatest decreases occurred in echocardiogram stress tests (91%), exercise treadmill tests (88%), and computed tomography calcium scores (87%), with slight variations between sub-regions of Latin America. Changes in social distancing patterns (p < 0.001) were more strongly associated with volume reduction than COVID-19 incidence (p = 0.003). Conclusions COVID-19 was associated with a significant reduction in cardiac diagnostic procedures in Latin America, which was more related to social distancing than to the COVID-19 incidence. Better balance and timing of social distancing measures and planning to maintain access to medical care is warranted during a pandemic surge, especially in regions with high cardiovascular mortality.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

A regional analysis of weather mediated competition between a parasitoid and a coccinellid predator of oleander scale

O controle natural de uma população assexuada de cochonilha-da-espirradeira (Aspidiotus nerii Bouchè (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) em plantas do louro da California [Umbellularia californica (Hopk. & Arn.) Nut.] por dois de seus inimigos naturais [Aphytis chilensis Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) e Rhysobius lophanthae (Blaisd.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)] foi examinado em meio-ambiente com mudanças climáticas usando um modelo geral tritrófico, com base em estrutura populacional de idade e massa e acionado por condições climáticas. O modelo é de complexidade intermediária e os parâmetros foram obtidos através de extensas observações de laboratório e campo em Albany, Califórnia. Índices fisiológicos dependentes de temperatura foram desenvolvidos a partir de dados de laboratório e usados para modificar o crescimento per capita, fecundidade e taxas de sobrevivência dos valores máximos. O modelo tritrófico foi integrado em GIS (sistema geográfico de informação ) e a dinâmica das espécies foi examinada através dos anos e das zonas ecológicas da Califórnia. Dados de campo e resultados de modelagem sugerem que o coccinelídeo predador é o agente mais importante no controle da cochonilha-da-espirradeira no clima ameno de Albany. Entretanto, a análise de regressão linear multivariada de dados de simulações regionais, demonstra que, sob altas temperaturas, A. chilensis é o fator mais importante suprimindo as densidades da cochonilha, enquanto o predador R. lophanthae é mais eficiente em regiões mais frias. A presença de R. lophanthae aumenta a densidade da cochonilha 9,7% em média através das zonas ecológicas da Califórnia.
The regulation of an asexual population of the oleander scale [Aspidiotus nerii Bouchè (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)] on California bay tree [Umbellularia californica (Hopk. & Arn.) Nut.] by two natural enemies; an idiobiont, ectoparasitoid Aphytis chilensis Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) and a coccinellid predator (Rhysobius lophanthae (Blaisd.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), was examined using a general weather-driven, tri-trophic, physiologically based age-mass structured demographic model. The model is of intermediate complexity and was parameterized using extensive laboratory data and field observations from Albany, CA. Temperature-dependent physiological indices were estimated from the laboratory data and used to scale per capita growth, fecundity and survivorship rates from maximal values in a time varying environment. The tri-trophic model was integrated in a GIS (geographic information system) and the species dynamics examined across years and across the ecological zones of California. Field data and simulation results suggested the coccinellid predator was the most important regulating agent of oleander scale in the mild climate of Albany. However, multiple linear regression analysis of simulation data across all ecological zones of California shows that the parasitoid A. chilensis is the most important agent in suppressing oleander scale densities in warmer climates, while the predator R. lophanthae increases scale density an average of 9.7% across all regions.

A dinâmica populacional da broca do café, Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari foi estudada em Paula Cândido, MG, Brasil (20º S; 660 m altitude, 1391 mm precipitação anual média, 18º C temperatura média anual). Semanalmente, de novembro de 1992 a maio de 1993, acompanhou-se: os estádios de desenvolvimento fenológico dos frutos de café (chumbinho, verde, início de maturação, cereja e seco); os números de frutos brocados em cada estádio fenológico; e o número de indivíduos da broca em cada estádio de desenvolvimento, presentes nos frutos brocados. Verificou-se que existem no mínimo três gerações completas da broca desenvolvendo-se durante o período de formação dos frutos. A preferência da broca para atacar frutos em diferentes estagios de maturação é descrita por uma equação logistica em função da idade dos frutos. Depois de infestarem o fruto as fêmeas aguardam até o início da maturação dos frutos para iniciar a oviposição. Os resultados indicam que medidas de controle devem ser dirigidas ao período compreendido entre o final da safra e o início da maturação dos frutos na safra seguinte, atingindo os adultos antes do início da oviposição.
The population dynamics of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) was studied in Paula Cândido, Minas Gerais State, Brazil (20º S; 660 m high; 1391 mm rain/year; 18º C average temperature), from November 1992 to May 1993. The following aspects were assessed weekly: phenologycal development of the fruits (small green, green, beginning maturation, mature,and dry); the number of fruits infested at each developmental stage; and the number of individuals of the borer at each developmental stage (egg, larvae, prepupa, pupa, and adults) present in infested berries. At least three complete generations of the borer were found during fruit development. A rigth skewed preference function of fruit age describes the attack of the fruits by the borer. After infestation the borer started ovipositing as fruits started maturing. Results suggest that control measures should be taken between the end of one growing season, after harvesting, and the beginning of fruit maturation in the next growing season, targeting adults before oviposition begins.

Tritrophic analysis of the coffee (Coffea arabica) - coffee berry borer [Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari)] - parasitoid system

Desenvolveu-se um modelo tritrófico de simulação para o cafeeiro (Coffea arabica var. mundo novo), a broca-do-café [Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari)] e três de seus parasitóides. O modelo contém a dinâmica da planta estruturada por idade e massa e é influenciado por fatores edáficos e meteorológicos. Dados extensivos de matéria seca de plantas de cafeeiro foram coletados durante três anos e dados de campo sobre a dinâmica da broca foram observados durante um ano. Os trabalhos foram desenvolvidos na sede do IAPAR, Londrina, PR, Brasil. Estes dados foram usados para estimar as relações alométricas e os parâmetros de alocação de matéria mas os parâmetros para a broca e três dos seus parasitóides, foram baseados em dados resumidos da literatura. Níveis iniciais de fatores do solo ( nitrogênio e água ) e dados climáticos foram usados para executar o modelo. Este modelo é independente dos dados de campo, entretanto simula a dinâmica de ramificaçao, frutificação e crescimento da matéria seca das subunidades da planta. Resultados de simulação sugerem que, dos três parasitóides introduzidos para controlar a broca, somente o eulofideo adulto endoparasitóide (Phymastichus coffea La Salle) exibe caracteristicas demográficas para, potencialmente controlar as populações da broca . Os efeitos da colheita, a remoção dos frutos não colhidos (na planta e no solo ), liberações inundativas de parasitóides e o uso de inseticidas com diferentes características de toxidez e persistência sobre a dinâmica da broca, foram avaliados. O modelo é flexível e fornece uma base sólida para incorporar novos conhecimentos, novas variedades e a biologia de novos inimigos naturais a nível mundial.
An age-mass structured multi-year tritrophic simulation model of the coffee (Coffea arabica var. mundo novo) - coffee berry borer [Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari)], borer - three parasitoid system was developed. Three years of extensive plant drymatter data and one year of field data on borer dynamics were collected at Londrina, PR, Brazil. The allometric relationships and parameter for plant drymatter allocation were estimated from the field data, but the parameters for borer and its three parasitoids were summarized from the literature. Initial levels of soil factors (e.g., nitrogen and water) and observed weather data were used to drive the model. The model is largely independent of the field data, yet it simulated the dynamics of plant branching, fruiting and drymatter growth of plant subunits. Simulation results suggest that of the three parasitoids commonly introduced to control the borer, only the eulophid adult endo-parasitoid (Phymastichus coffea La Salle) has the demographic characteristics to potentially regulate borer populations. The effects of harvesting, cleanup of abscised berries, inundative releases of parasitoids and pesticides with various toxicity and persistence characteristics on borer dynamics were evaluated. The model is very flexible, and may provide a sound foundation for incorporating new findings, new varieties, and the biology of new natural enemies worldwide
