Abstract: This paper evaluates the physicochemical and biological properties of experimental resin-based dual-cured calcium aluminate (CA) and calcium titanate (CTi) materials for vital pulp therapy (VPT). The experimental dual-cured materials were obtained as two pastes: a) Bis-EMA 10, PEG 400, DHEPT, EDAB, camphorquinone, and butylated hydroxytoluene; and b) fluoride ytterbium, Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, benzoyl peroxide, and butylated hydroxytoluene. The materials were divided into six groups based on the added calcium component: MTA (MTA®, Angelus); CLQ (Clinker-Fillapex®, Angelus); CA (calcined at ,1200°C in pastes a and b); CA800 (calcined at 800°C in paste a); CA1200 (calcined at 1,200°C in paste a); and CTi (paste a). The real-time degree of conversion and rate of polymerization (n = 3), diametral tensile strength (n = 10), hydrogen potential (n = 15), calcium ion release (n = 10), water sorption and solubility (n = 10), and cell viability (n = 6) were evaluated. One- and two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test were used in the analysis of the parametric data, and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s multiple tests were used to analyze the nonparametric data (α = 0.05). CLQ, CA800 and CA1200 had the highest diametral tensile strength. The water solubility of MTA was similar to that of CA800, CA1200 and CTi. CA800 and CA1200 resulted in cell viabilities similar to those of MTA and CLQ. The experimental dual-cured CA-based material that calcined at 800°C showed physicochemical and biological properties suitable for VPT, and similar to those of MTA.

Pinos endodônticos são necessários para promover retenção e suporte adequados quando a estrutura dental remanescente não é suficiente para reter o núcleo. Há diferentes materiais e técnicas para construir o núcleo, mas não há consenso sobre o qual promove a melhor distribuição de tensão na estrutura dental remanescente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar e avaliar a distribuição de tensões produzidas nas raízes por pinos de fibra de vidro customizados quando comparados a diferentes pinos endodônticos. Vinte e cinco raízes simuladas em resina fotoelástica foram confeccionadas e divididas em 5 grupos: CPC, núcleo metálico fundido, SP, pino rosqueável; CF, pino de fibra de carbono; GF, pino de fibra de vidro; CGF, pino de fibra de vidro customizado. Depois da cimentação dos pinos de CPC e SP com cimento de fosfato de zinco e dos pinos de CF, GF e CGF com cimento resinoso, núcleos em resina foram feitos para os grupos 2-5. Os espécimes foram avaliados com carga vertical ou oblíqua a 45o. Para analisar as franjas, a área da raiz foi dividida em 6 partes: palatina cervical, palatina média, palatina apical, vestibular cervical, vestibular média e vestibular apical. As franjas formadas foram fotografadas e quantificadas. Os dados foram gravados e submetidos à ANOVA de dois fatores e ao teste de Tukey (5%). SP (1,95±0,60) mostrou maior tensão (p<0,05) quando comparado com os demais (CPC - 0,52±0,74; CF - 0,50±0,75, GF - 0,23±0,48, CGF - 0,45±0,83). Todos os pinos mostraram maior tensão no terço apical (CPC - 1,40±0,65; SP - 2,30±0,44, CF - 1,80±0,45, GF - 1,20±0,45, CGF - 1,70±1,03) Menor tensão foi encontrado no terço cervical (CPC - 0,20±0.45; CF - 0,00±0 00, GF - 0 ,0±0,00, CGF - 0,00±0,00), exceto pelo SP (1,90±0,65), que não apresentou diferença estatística (p<0,05). Pinos customizados de fibra de vidro mostraram maior concentração de estresse na raiz quando comparados com pinos convencionais de fibra de vidro, que se mostraram com comportamento biomecânico mais favorável.

Endodontic posts are necessary to provide adequate retention and support when no sufficient remaining structure is available to retain the core. There are different materials and techniques to construct post-and-core, but there is no consensus about which one promotes better stress distribution on the remaining tooth structure. This study aimed to quantify and evaluate the distribution of stress in the root produced by customized glass fiber posts compared to different endodontic posts. Twenty-five simulated roots from photoelastic resin were made and divided into 5 groups: CPC, cast post-and-core; SP, screw post; CF, carbon fiber post; GF, glass fiber post; and CGF, customized glass fiber post. After cementing CPC and SP posts with zinc phosphate cement, and CF, GF and CGF posts with resin cement, resin cores were made for groups 2-5. Specimens were evaluated with vertical or 45° oblique loading. To analyze the fringes, the root was divided into 6 parts: palatal cervical, palatal middle, palatal apical, vestibular cervical, vestibular middle, and vestibular apical. The formed fringes were photographed and quantified. Data were recorded and subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). SP (1.95±0.60) showed higher stress (p<0.05) compared to the others (CPC-0.52±0.74; CF-0.50±0.75, GF-0.23±0.48 and CGF-0.45±0.83). All posts showed high stress in apical third (CPC-1.40±0.65; SP-2.30±0.44, CF-1.80±0.45, GF-1.20±0.45, CGF-1.70±1.03) Low stress was found in cervical third (CPC-0.20±0.45; CF-0.00±0.00, GF-0.00±0.00, CGF-0.00±0.00), except by SP (1.90±0.65), which showed statistical difference (p<0.05). Customized post showed high stress concentration at the root and conventional glass fiber posts showed more favorable biomechanical behavior.

OBJETIVO: comparar a resistência ao atrito entre braquetes autoligáveis e braquetes convencionais, variando o tipo de fio. MÉTODOS: foram usados braquetes incisivos Abzil Kirium Capelozza e Easy Clip. Uma ligadura elastomérica ou um fio ligável de 0,010" foi usado para ligação do fio no braquete Abzil. Três tipos de ligas de fio ortodôntico foram avaliadas: fio de NiTi de 0,016"; fio de NiTi de 0,016" x 0,022"; e fio de aço de 0,019" x 0,025". Dez observações foram feitas para cada combinação "braquete-fio-inclinação". Os braquetes foram montados em um aparelho especial, posicionados a 90° em relação ao fio, e testados em duas inclinações. O teste de atrito foi realizado na máquina universal de ensaios, a 5mm/min e com 10mm de deslocamento. As médias (em MPa) foram submetidas aos testes ANOVA e de Tukey, a 5% de significância. As superfícies dos fios e dos braquetes foram observadas no MEV. RESULTADOS: o braquete com amarrilhos metálicos (16,48 ± 8,31MPa) apresentou médias mais altas que o braquete com ligaduras elastoméricas (4,29 ± 2,16MPa) e o braquete autoligável (1,66 ± 1,57) (p < 0,05), os quais também diferiram entre si (p < 0,05). Quanto ao tipo do fio, o fio de aço de 0,019" x 0,025" (5,67 ± 3,97MPa) apresentou médias mais baixas (p < 0,05) que os fios de NiTi de 0,016" (8,26 ± 10,92MPa) e de 0,016" x 0,022" (8,51 ± 7,95), os quais não diferiram entre si (p > 0,05). Nenhuma diferença estatística (p > 0,05) foi encontrada entre inclinações de zero (7,76 ± 8,46) e cinco (7,19 ± 7,93) graus. Concluão: o atrito foi influenciado pelo tipo de braquete e sistemas de ligaduras. Diferentes aspectos morfológicos foram observados para os braquetes e fios estudados.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the frictional resistance between self-ligating and conventional brackets tied to different types of wire. MATERIAL AND METHODS : Abzil Kirium Capelozza (Pattern I) and Easy Clip (Roth prescription) incisor brackets were used. An elastomeric ligature or a ligating wire 0.10-in was used to ligate the wire to the Abzil bracket. Three types of orthodontic archwire alloys were assessed: 0.016-in NiTi wire, 0.016 x 0.021-in NiTi wire and 0.019 x 0.025-in steel wire. Ten observations were carried out for each bracket-archwire angulation combination. Brackets were mounted in a special appliance, positioned at 90 degrees in relation to the wire and tested in two angulations. Frictional test was performed in a Universal Testing Machine at 5 mm/min and 10 mm of displacement. The means (MPa) were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test set at 5% of significance. The surfaces of wires and brackets were observed at SEM. RESULTS: Steel-tied brackets (16.48 ± 8.31) showed higher means of frictional resistance than elastomeric-tied brackets (4.29 ± 2.16 ) and self-ligating brackets (1.66 ± 1.57) (P < 0.05), which also differed from each other (P < 0.05). As for the type of wire, 0.019 x 0.025-in steel wire (5.67 ± 3.97) showed lower means (P < 0.05) than 0.16-in NiTi wire (8.26 ± 10.92) and 0.016 x 0.021-in NiTi wire (8.51 ± 7.95), which did not differ from each other (P > 0.05). No statistical differences (P > 0.05) were found between zero (7.76 ± 8.46) and five-degree (7.19 ± 7.93) angulations. CONCLUSIONS: Friction was influenced not only by the type of bracket, but also by the ligating systems. Different morphological aspects were observed for the brackets and wires studied

Este estudo avaliou a efetividade de diferentes selantes aplicados a uma resina nanoparticulada. Quarenta espécimes de Filtek Z-350 foram obtidos depois da inserção do material em um molde de aço inoxidável seguido por fotoativação por 20 s. Os grupos foram divididos (n=10) de acordo com o tratamento superficial aplicado: Grupo controle (sem tratamento superficial), Fortify, Fortify Plus ou Biscover LV. Os espécimes foram submetidos a escovação simulada usando uma carga de 200 g e 250 ciclos/min para simular 1 semana, 1, 3 e 6 meses e 1 e 3 anos, considerando que 10.000 ciclos equivalem a um ano de escovação. Escovas Oral-B de cabeça macia e dentifrício Colgate Total diluído a 1:2 em água foram utilizados. Depois de cada período de simulação, a rugosidade superficial foi medida em triplicata. Os dados foram submetidos à ANOVA de dois fatores e ao teste de Tukey com nível de 95% de confiança. Os espécimes foram observados em microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) depois de cada ciclo de escovação. O grupo controle não foi diferente (p>0,05) que os outros grupos, exceto pelo Fortify Plus (p<0,05), que foi mais rugoso. Nenhuma diferença (p>0,05) foi observada em 1 mês de simulação entre os grupos experimentais e o controle. Fortify e Fortify Plus apresentaram rugosidade regular com o tempo, diferindo da inicial em todos os tempos. Nenhum dos grupos selados mostrou melhor desempenho (p>0,05) que o grupo controle em qualquer um dos tempos. MEV ressaltou as diferenças encontradas durante o teste de rugosidade. Selantes de penetração de superfície não melhoram a rugosidade da resina nanoparticulada.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of different sealants applied to a nanofiller composite resin. Forty specimens of Filtek Z-350 were obtained after inserting the material in a 6x3 mm stainless steel mold followed by light activation for 20 s. The groups were divided (n=10) according to the surface treatment applied: Control group (no surface treatment), Fortify, Fortify Plus and Biscover LV. The specimens were subjected to simulated toothbrushing using a 200 g load and 250 strokes/min to simulate 1 week, 1, 3 and 6 months and 1 and 3 years in the mouth, considering 10,000 cycles equivalent to 1 year of toothbrushing. Oral-B soft-bristle-tip toothbrush heads and Colgate Total dentifrice at a 1:2 water-dilution were used. After each simulated time, surface roughness was assessed in random triplicate readings. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at a 95% confidence level. The specimens were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after each toothbrushing cycle. The control group was not significantly different (p>0.05) from the other groups, except for Fortify Plus (p<0.05), which was rougher. No significant differences (p>0.05) were observed at the 1-month assessment between the experimental and control groups. Fortify and Fortify Plus presented a rougher surface over time, differing from the baseline (p<0.05). Biscover LV did not differ (p>0.05) from the baseline at any time. None of the experimental groups showed a significantly better performance (p>0.05) than the control group at any time. SEM confirmed the differences found during the roughness testing. Surface penetrating sealants did not improve the roughness of nanofiller composite resin.

A discrepância entre a expansão e a contração térmica dos materiais restauradores e o dente podem causar estresse na sua interface, podendo levar a uma microinfiltração. O presente trabalho determinou e comparou o coeficiente de expansão térmica (CET) com o comportamento termo mecânico dos dentes humanos e bovinos e determinou se o CET é um parâmetro adequado para descrever o comportamento dental. 15 fatias (6×5×2 mm) de terceiros molares humanos e 15 de incisivos bovinos foram divididos em 3 grupos de acordo com o ambiente testado: G1 - condição ambiente, G2 - 100% de umidade, G3 - dissecado e testado em condição seca. Cada espécime foi pesado, aquecido de 20 a 70<img border=0 width=32 height=32 src="../../../../../../img/revistas/bdj/v23n1/car01.jpg">C a 10ºC min-1 e pesados novamente. O CET foi mensurado entre 20 e 50ºC. Dentina fresca (humana -0,49% ± 0,27, bovina -0,22% ± 0,16) contrai no aquecimento sobre condição seca. Em condição úmida, somente dente humano (-0,05% ± 0,04) mostrou contração (bovina 0,00% ± 0,03) acompanhado por uma significante (p<0.05) perda de massa que os espécimes secos. A dentina dissecada expande no aquecimento sem mudanças óbvias de peso (0,00% ± 0,00). O CET encontrado foi, respectivamente, em condições seca, úmida e dissecada em ºC-1: humana (-66,03×10-6, -6,82×10-6, 5,52×10-6) e bovina (-33,71×10-6, 5,47×10-6, 4,31×10-6). De acordo com sua condição de umidade, a dentina mostrou diferentes CETs. O comportamento de expansão térmica de dentes humanos e bovinos é similar. Uma simples avaliação do coeficiente de expansão térmica da estrutura dental pelo seu valor de CET pode não ser apropriada para uma consideração significativa dos efeitos na interface dente-material restaurador.

The mismatch of thermal expansion and contraction between restorative materials and tooth may cause stresses at their interface, which may lead to microleakage. The present work compared the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with the thermomechanical behavior of human and bovine teeth and determined if the CTE is a suitable parameter to describe tooth behavior. Fifteen human third molar and 15 bovine incisor tooth slices (6×5×2 mm) were allocated to 3 groups according to the test environment: G1 - room condition, G2 - 100% humidity, G3 - desiccated and tested in dry condition. Each specimen was weighed, heated from 20 to 70ºC at 10ºC min−1 and reweighed. The CTE was measured between 20 and 50ºC. Fresh dentin (human -0.49% ± 0.27, bovine -0.22% ± 0.16) contracted on heating under dry condition. Under wet conditions, only human teeth (-0.05% ± 0.04) showed contraction (bovine 0.00% ± 0.03) accompanied by a significantly lower (p<0.05) weight loss than in dry specimens (human 0.35% ± 0.15, bovine 0.45% ± 0.20). The desiccated dentin expanded on heating without obvious weight changes (0.00% ± 0.00). The CTE found was, respectively, in dry, wet and dissected conditions in ºC-1: human (-66.03×10-6, -6.82×10-6, 5.52×10-6) and bovine (-33.71×10-6, 5.47×10-6, 4.31×10-6). According to its wet condition, the dentin showed different CTEs. The thermal expansion behavior of human and bovine dentin was similar. A simple evaluation of the thermal expansion behavior of tooth structure by its CTE value may not be appropriate as a meaningful consideration of the effects on the tooth-material interface.

Silorane-based composite, an epoxy material, was marketed as promising less polymerization contraction than conventional restorative materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate, by means of photoelasticity, the polymerization stress generated by a silorane-based composite. Thirty photoelastic rings with orifices measuring 5 mm (d) × 3 mm (h) were prepared and divided into 6 groups (n = 5) according to the material tested. The inside walls of the rings were sandblasted with aluminum oxide, after which the restorative materials were inserted into the orifices and photoactivated according to the manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were analyzed and the visual representation of the stress was measured considering the isochromatic ring of first order. The data were converted to MPa and subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (α= 0.05). The adhesive Filtek P-90 (G5) showed high contraction stress (p < 0.05) when compared to G1, G2, G3, G4, and G6, which did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). The composite Filtek P-90 showed similar contraction stress compared to the conventional composite and, additionally, its adhesive showed higher stress than did the etch-and-rinse 2-step adhesive.

A presença dos pontos de contato dentais é essencial para a manutenção da oclusão habitual e da saúde das estruturas periodontais. Ocasionalmente as cáries dentárias podem comprometer o ponto de contato interproximal, induzindo a migração de dentes adjacentes com conseqüente retenção de alimento, inflamação gengival, formação de bolsa periodontal, perda óssea e mobilidade dental. A fim de realizar um tratamento restaurador adequado, o restabelecimento do espaço interproximal é necessário. O presente relato descreve a recuperação do espaço interproximal entre molares de uma paciente de 45 anos de idade antes da reconstrução dentária. Neste caso, um elástico ortodôntico separador foi indicado como alternativa aos dispositivos ortodônticos fixos no restabelecimento do espaço necessário. A técnica utilizada provou ser eficiente, efetiva e econômica, e principalmente menos invasiva e fácil de ser realizada. Contudo para que o sucesso clínico se estabeleça ao longo do tempo, faz-se necessário um controle clínico e radiográfico.

The presence of a dental contact point is essential to maintain normal occlusion and to preserve the health of periodontal structures. Occasionally dental caries could compromise the interproximal contact point, leading to migration of the adjacent teeth with consequent retention of food, gingival inflammation, pocket formation, bone loss and dental mobility. In order to achieve an adequate restorative treatment, reestablishment of interproximal space is necessary. This report describes the interproximal space recovery between the maxillary first and second molars of a 45-year-old female patient before tooth reconstruction. In this case, an orthodontic elastic separator was indicated as an alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances in order to recover the necessary space. The technique was proven efficient, effective, economical, easy to perform and, above all, less invasive than other methods. The interproximal space was regained and a ceramic onlay was cemented for restoring the maxillary second molar. Periodical clinical and radiographic follow-up should be maintained to ensure long-term success.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência de união (RU) de adesivos autocondicionantes com e sem HEMA à dentina. A superfície oclusal de 20 terceiros molares foi removida e a dentina abrasionada com lixa de carbeto de silício de granulação 600. Em seguida, os dentes foram divididos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos (n=5) e restaurados com os sistemas adesivos Go, Adper SE Plus, OptiBond All-In-One ed Clearfil 3S Bond e resina composta Filtek Z350. Após fotoativação (600 mW/cm²), eles foram armazenados em água destilada (37ºC/24 h) e secionados nas direções mésio-distal e vestíbulo-lingual, para obter corpos-de-prova em formato de palito (0,8 mm²). Os palitos foram tracionados em máquina de ensaio universal com velocidade de 0,5 mm/min, e os modos de fratura observados em microscópio eletrônico de varredura e classificados em adesiva, coesiva ou mista. Os dados de RU (em MPa) foram analisados estatisticamente por ANOVA a um critério e teste de Tukey com nível de significância de 5%. A menor RU foi observada para o adesivo GO (10,57 ± 3,72) (p=0,001). Adper SE Plus (29,08 ± 8,93), OptiBond All-In-One (28,36 ± 6,49) e Clearfil 3S Bond (28,62 ± 6,97) foram estatisticamente semelhantes entre si (p>0.05). Fraturas mistas predominaram nos grupos. Concluiu-se que a influência do HEMA na RU foi material-dependente.

This study analyzed the bond strength (BS) of HEMA versus HEMA-free self-etch adhesive systems to dentin. The occlusal surface of 20 third molars was removed and the dentin was abraded with 600-grit silicon carbide paper. The teeth were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=5) and restored with GO, Adper SE Plus, OptiBond All-In-One, and Clearfil 3S Bond adhesive systems and Filtek Z350 composite. After light curing (600 mW/cm²), the teeth were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 h and were sectioned in the mesiodistal and buccolingual directions to obtain sticks (0.8 mm²). The sticks were subjected to tensile force using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min), and the modes of failure were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and classified as adhesive, cohesive, or mixed. The BS data (in MPa) were treated using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests at 5% significance. GO presented the lowest mean bond strength value (10.57 ± 3.72) and differed significantly from the other materials (p=0.001), which, in turn, presented statistically similar results (p>0.05) among themselves: Adper SE Plus (29.08 ± 8.93), OptiBond All-In-One (28.36 ± 6.49), and Clearfil 3S Bond (28.62 ± 6.97). Mixed fractures were the most prevalent. It was concluded that the influence of HEMA on BS to dentin was material dependent.

Este estudo comparou a dimensão e a distribuição tubular da dentina humana e bovina. Dez molares humanos e 10 incisivos bovinos foram desgastados com alta rotação para se obter 3 secções de diferentes profundidades de dentina (superficial, média e profunda). As amostras foram cobertas com ouro em um metalizador para a observavação em MEV. Três micrografias foram tiradas aleatoriamente para cada profundidade de dentina. O número de túbulos foi contado e o diâmetro de 5 túbulos selecionados aleatoriamente foi medido para cada micrografia. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey (a=0.05). Em dente bovino, a dentina superficial (4,21 μm) e a dentina média (3,98 μm) apresentaram diâmetro estatisticamente superior (p<0,05) à dentina profunda (3,14 μm). Em dente humano, o diâmetro dos túbulos da dentina superficial (2,42 μm) mostrou-se significativamente menor que a dentina profunda (2,99 μm) e média, (2,94 μm) as quais não diferiram entre si. O numero de túbulos por mm2, independente da região, foi significativamente maior para a dentina humana (22,329) que para dentina bovina (15,964). Houve uma clara diferença na estrutura tubular e morfológica entre dentina humana e bovina.

This study compared the tubular dimensions and distribution of human and bovine dentin. Ten human molars and 10 bovine incisors were ground with a high-speed handpiece to obtain 3 sections at different dentin depths (superficial, middle and deep). The specimens were sputter-coated with gold to be examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three SEM micrographs were recorded randomly for each dentin depth. The number of tubules was counted and the diameter of 5 tubules selected at random was measured in each SEM micrograph. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). In bovine teeth, superficial dentin (4.21 μm) and middle dentin (3.98 μm) had a significantly greater (p<0.05) diameter than deep dentin (3.14 μm) tubules. In human teeth, superficial dentin tubule diameter (2.42 μm) was significantly smaller (p<0.05) than deep dentin (2.99 μm) and middle dentin (2.94 μm) tubule diameters, which did not differ significantly from each other (p>0.05). The number of tubules per square millimiter, regardless of the region, was significantly greater in human dentin (22,329) than in bovine dentin (15,964). There was a clear difference in tubule structure and morphology between human and bovine dentin.
