ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

The cariogenic processes are mainly caused by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and consist of the demineralization of the tooth that occurs when the acid production overcomes the natural repair or if a problem occurs in the last one. In this work, we performed the synthesis of twenty-one 1,4-naphthoquinones tethered to 1,2,3-1H-triazoles (8a-8k and 9a-9j), antibacterial evaluation against the S. mutans in vitro and the acute toxicity of the better ones in vivo. We observed strong inhibition results in the disc diffusion test ranging, the halos of inhibitions, from 18.66 (± 0.57) to 29 (± 2.64) mm, and good values in the minimum inhibitory concentration (5 to 50 μg), for the compounds 9e, 9h, 9i and 9j: Furthermore, they do not have a cytotoxic effect at the concentrations tested. Besides that, in the in vivo test, they show some slight alteration in the histopathological analyses and the biochemistry. Thus, we found four potential candidates to become instruments for the treatment of cavities.

ABSTRACT Knowing the soil moisture available to plants is important for adequate management of water use in agricultural farms, with automated methods being the most accurate. However, acquisition costs are high and most of the commercially available irrigation controllers still work using pre-set times. This study aimed to develop and calibrate a low-cost automated tensiometer with high efficiency in irrigation control, based on real-time monitoring. The research was conducted at the Laboratories of Hydraulics and of Water Soil Plant and Atmosphere Relationship, which belong to the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), in Dourados, MS, Brazil, with soil classified as an Oxisol. Pressure transducers and a microcontroller were used to assimilate the pressure inside tensiometers and transform it into readings of soil water matric potential (Ψm). Thus, the calibration was carried out by comparing the different readings of the transducer and digital tension meter. Different tensions were applied to obtain a soil moisture curve, starting from the most humid point (saturated) to the driest one (oven-dried soil), collecting 20 valid points. Subsequently, the data were subjected to the normality test, with subsequent statistical analysis and regression curve models. Linear adjustments with a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.99) were observed, with the automated system built in this study being capable of monitoring soil water tension in real-time.

Abstract Nude mice carry an autosomal recessive mutation in the Foxn1 gene and therefore are homozygous recessive animals (Foxn1 -/-). The fertility rate of homozygous male (Foxn1-/-) is low, which seems to be related to the delay in the production of gametes at the beginning of sexual maturity. The present study evaluated the structural and organizational aspects of the testicles of homozygous and heterozygous offspring related to the Foxn1 gene in mice, describing its implications on spermatogenesis. Adult males Balb/c, Foxn1+/- and Foxn1-/- mice were used. Testes and epididymis were harvested for histological, biochemical, and sperm transit analyses. Gonadal weight was significantly lower in Foxn1+/-and Foxn1-/-animals, the same behavior was noticed for the activity of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, tubular parameters such as epithelial proportion, length, and area, as well as germ and Leydig cell’s populations were significantly reduced in the aforementioned groups, leading to lower sperm production. In conclusion, our results indicate the importance of the Foxn1 in Leydig cell’s function, reflecting in the preservation of spermatogenesis, thus in germ cell’s population and sperm cell production.

Microscopic techniques were combined to study the influence of corrosion rate on the morphologic behavior of AISI 1020 steel specimens submitted to thermal degradation of a typical acid crude oil (total acid number (TAN) = 2.1390 mg KOH g-1 and total sulfur (S) = 0.7778 wt.%). The techniques used were light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as Raman spectroscopy. Assays were performed in six different degradation time (t = 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 h) at 320 ºC. After the exposure of the specimens to petroleum, a reduction above 37% in the TAN after t = 72 h was observed, with a maximum corrosion rate during the first periods of degradation (t = 6 and 12 h). Correlating the TAN and corrosion rate data with the microscopic data, the images of LM, AFM, and SEM/EDX showed that after 6 h of exposure to petroleum, a passivation film was formed on the surface of the steel. This film consisted of two layers, an external one, formed of FeS, and an internal one, composed of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. However, after 48 h of thermal degradation, this morphology was altered to a single layer of FeS coating the steel surface.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to identify the presence of a mutation in the L2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase (L2-HGDH) gene in Staffordshire bull terriers in Brazil. Genetic testing was done in 76 dogs from different regions of the country, from 2008 to 2015. Fifty-five dogs (72.37%) were free of the mutant gene L2HGDH or homozygous-dominant, and 21 (27.63%) were carriers for the mutant gene or heterozygous. No homozygous recessive dogs (affected) were found, however, it is worth noting that the gene circulates in Brazil and that affected dogs can appear.

Abstract: The Brazilian savanna, also known as Cerrado, is one of the world's richest and most ecologically invaluable tropical savanna regions. There are few studies in Brazil about the diseases that affect the wild canids of this biome, which may be harmful to wildlife populations and public health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of antibodies against Leptospira spp. in three Cerrado wild canids species using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Serum samples were tested from 19 crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), 14 maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), and seven hoary foxes (Lycalopex vetulus), all free-ranging animals found in the municipalities of Araguari and Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State, and Cumari, Goiás State, Brazil. Fourteen (35%) of these samples were seropositive. The most frequent serovars detected in the samples were Copenhageni and Hardjo, but reactions to the serovars Autumnalis, Grippotyphosa, Hebdomadis, Wolffi, and Icterohaemorrhagiae also occurred. Notwithstanding other reported results, this study is the first to report the presence of antibodies against Leptospira spp. in L. vetulus. The three species of wild canids examined may act as potential hosts for several serovars of leptospira in Brazil's savanna environment.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The species Drimys angustifolia Miers and D. brasiliensis Miers, commonly known as "casca-de-anta", have in their leaves essential oils that can confer cytotoxic effects. In this study, we evaluated the citotoxic effects of the volatile oils from these two species. We also proposed a nanoemulsion formulation for each of the species and assessed the in vitro cytotoxicity on U-138 MG (human glioblastoma) and T24 (human bladder carcinoma) cell lines. The plant chemical composition was evaluated by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer. Furthermore, the nanoemulsions were prepared and characterized. Our results showed that; bicyclogermacrene (19.6%) and cyclocolorenone (18.2%) were the most abundant for the D angustifolia oil and D brasiliensis oil, respectively. Both nanoemulsions, D angustifolia and D brasiliensis appeared macroscopically homogeneous and opalescent bluish liquids, with nanometric mean diameters of 168 nm for D brasiliensis and 181 nm for D angustifolia. The polydispersity indices were below 0.10, with an acid pH of 4.7-6.3, and negative zeta potentials about -34 mV. The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that droplets are present in the nanometer range. Only the D brasiliensis oil was efficient in reducing the cell viability of both U-138 MG (42.5%±7.0 and 67.8%±7.8) and T24 (33.2%±2.8, 60.3%±1.6 and 80.5%±8.8) cell lines, as assessed by MTT assay. Noteworthy, similar results were obtained with cell counting. Finally, D brasiliensis oil incubation caused an increase of annexin-V and propidium iodite population, according to evaluation by cytometry analysis, what is characteristic of late apoptosis. The results presented herein lead us to consider the potential therapeutic effects of the essential oils and nanoformulations as novel strategies to inhibit tumor growth.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between sociodemographic, clinical, physical and functional data according to physical performance and number of falls among older fallers. METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out among 72 older adults (76.3 ±8.3 years) with a history of falls in the past year, 65.3% of which were women. The participants received care at the geriatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Campinas, SP. They were divided into the following groups: worst physical performance (WPP) and best physical performance (BPP), one-time fallers (1F) and frequent fallers (2F). Sociodemographic, clinical, physical and functional characteristics were considered as independent variables. Comparison analysis between the groups was conducted. RESULTS: The WPP group was older and had a higher number of illnesses and less independence in most motor dimension tasks compared to the BPP group. The 2F group had a higher number of illnesses, less handgrip strength and less independence in the bowel management task in the motor dimension of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) compared to the 1F group. CONCLUSIONS: Among older adults fallers, poor physical performance is associated with more advanced age, more illnesses and less functional independence. Moreover, recurrent falls are associated with more illnesses, less muscle strength and less functional independence in the bowel management task.

BACKGROUND: The causes for restenosis following percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (PBMV) vary according to the population undergoing this technique. The aim of this study was to compare the immediate and long-term results of patients undergoing a second and third PBMV to patients submitted to a single dilatation of the mitral valve for the treatment of severe mitral stenosis. METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups: group A with 90 patients who, due to clinical and echocardiographic restenosis, were submitted to more than one procedure, and group B with 90 patients, selected by a random sample who underwent a single successful procedure. The echocardiographic variables analyzed to compare the results in the same group and between groups A and B were mitral valve area (MVA), maximal and mean diastolic gradients, left atrial diameter and incidence and time to restenosis. RESULTS: In group A, the first dilatation was successfully performed in 87 (96.7%) patients. Mean MVA after the first dilatation was smaller in group A patients than in group B patients (1.97 ± 0.17 cm² vs. 2.10 ± 0.33 cm²; P = 0.011). In both groups there was no statistically significant difference before and immediately after the first procedure in the reduction of the maximal and mean diastolic gradients and in mean LA diameters. In group A patients, success criteria were achieved in 77 (85.5%) patients after the second procedure. Mean MVA at this time was smaller than after the first PBMV (1.83 ± 0.28 cm² vs. 1.97 ± 0.17 cm²; P < 0.005). A significant decrease was observed for the maximal and mean diastolic gradients after the first and the second dilatation in this group. A third PBMV was successfully performed in all nine patients in the same group. Improvement of echocardiographic parameters was also observed in patients submitted to a second and third PBMV. Mean time to echocardiographic restenosis between the first, second and third PBMV was 54.12, 25.23 and 29.30 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Smaller MVA and earlier restenosis were observed after a second and third PBMV when compared to the first dilatation; however, these findings do not contraindicate the procedure. Although smaller, mitral valve areas achieved immediately after these procedures were still within the success range for the procedure in most of these patients and justify repeated PBMV in selected cases.
