Abstract: Drosophila suzukii is one of the main pests of small fruits in the world. An effective monitoring is fundamental to detect the presence of the fly and to predict the infestation of fruits in new areas. We evaluated the food baits Ceratrap®, Torula®, Biofruit®, Suzukii Trap®, apple cider vinegar, and a homemade mixture comprising wine, vinegar and molasses (WVM) for D. suzukii attractiveness, and if reproductive stage affects females attraction and capture in the different baits. Bait selectivity of non-target insects was assessed. The preference of adults between ripe blackberry fruit and the food baits was also evaluated. Adults showed a higher attraction (61.97% of the captured insects) to the WVM mixture than to Ceratrap® (1.32%), Torula® (0.52%), Biofruit® (13.15%), Suzukii Trap® (17.6%), and apple vinegar (5.4%). Considering the attractiveness to D. suzukii, Suzukii Trap® and apple vinegar were the most selective to non-target insects. In general, reproductively immature females showed a preference for Biofruit®, apple vinegar, and WVM, whereas mature females did not show bait preferences. Adults preferred ripe blackberry fruit over the WVM mixture. Understanding the field behavior of D. suzukii is of foremost importance to estimate insect population density and outline pest management strategies.

Spodoptera frugiperda é uma das pragas com elevado potencial para causar perdas econômicas na cultura do milho, no ecossistema de várzeas subtropicais. Com o objetivo de identificar fontes de resistência, foi avaliado, em laboratório, o desenvolvimento de S. frugiperda em nove genótipos de milho. Cem lagartas recém-eclodidas foram individualizadas em tubos de vidro, contendo porções de folhas de milho, mantidos à temperatura de 25±1°C, umidade relativa de 70±10% e fotofase de 14h. Avaliaram-se a duração e a viabilidade das fases de larva e pupa, o peso de larvas e de pupas e a mortalidade larval. Dentre os genótipos avaliados, destacaram-se o BRS Missões-B e o BR 111 VI Sel. Dent C, os quais afetaram, respectivamente, o desenvolvimento da fase de larva e de pupa.

Spodoptera frugiperda is the most important pest of the corn culture, causing high leaf losses. With intention to identify possible resistance sources, it was evaluated the effect of nine maize genotypes on the development of S. frugiperda in laboratory. One hundred newly-hatched larvae were individualized in glass tubes containing leaves, maintained under temperature of 25±1°C, relative humidity of 70±10% and photophase of 14h. Larval and pupal developmental time, survivorship and weight and larval mortality at 16 days were evaluated. It was observed that the genotypes BRS Missões-B and BR 111 VI Sel. Dent C affected the larval and pupal development, respectively.

Euetheola humilis (Burmeister) é um escarabeídeo praga das culturas do arroz, cana-de-açucar e milho, que ataca as cultura na fase larval e na adulta. A ocorrência de E. humilis foi observada em área florestada com Eucalyptus saligna Smith, pertencente a Votorantim Celulose & Papel (Fazenda Aroeira), no município de Candiota, RS. Plantas de aproximadamente 1m de altura foram danificadas por insetos adultos de E. humilis na região próxima ao colo, desfiando seu córtex, levando algumas à morte. Verificou-se ataque em torno de 10% das plantas de eucalipto, em uma área de aproximadamente 30 ha.

Euetheola humilis (Burmeister) is a scarabaeid pest of rice, sugarcane and corn cultures, that attacks the crops during both larval and adult phase. The occurrence of E. humilis was observed in a forest area with Eucalyptus saligna Smith, from Votorantim Celulose & Papel (Fazenda Aroeira), in the Municipality of Candiota, Rio Grande do Sul State. Plants approximately 1m high were damaged by E. humilis adult insects near the stem base, what unraveled its cortex and led some of them to death. The attack was verified in about 10% of the eucalypts plants, in an area of approximately 30 ha.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a susceptibilidade de lagartas dos biótipos milho e arroz de Spodoptera frugiperda, a inseticidas com diferentes modos de ação. Os insetos foram coletados em milho e em arroz irrigado no agroecossistema de várzea, município de Pelotas, região que produz milho e arroz irrigado (lado a lado). Os experimentos foram realizados, em condições controladas de temperatura (25 ± 1°C), umidade relativa (70 ± 10%) e fotofase (14 horas), utilizando-se folhas do híbrido de milho Pionner 30F33 (40 dias após a emergência). As folhas pulverizadas em torre de Potter calibrada para aplicação de um volume de calda de 1,7 ± 0,305mg cm-2, foram colocadas em recipientes de plásticos com tampa, sendo individualizadas 25 lagartas de 3° ínstar de cada biótipo de S. frugiperda. Os inseticidas e concentrações avaliados foram: clorpirifós [Lorsban 480 BR, 0,960g i.a. L-1 (Organofosforado)], lambda-cialotrina [Karate Zeon 50 CE, 0,003g i.a. L-1 (Piretróide sintético)], lufenuron [Match CE, 0,006g i.a. L-1 (Aciluréia)], methoxifenozide [Intrepid 240 SC, 0,158g i.a. L-1 (Diacilhidrazina)] e spinosad [Tracer, 0,960g i.a. L-1 (Naturalyte)]. A avaliação da mortalidade foi realizada 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas após o tratamento. O biótipo milho de S. frugiperda foi menos suscetível aos inseticidas lambda-cialotrina, lufenuron e methoxifenozide. Os inseticidas clorpirifós e spinosad foram eficientes no controle das lagartas dos biótipos milho e arroz de S. frugiperda.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the susceptibility of caterpillars of the biotypes corn and rice of Spodoptera frugiperda, to insecticides with different action manners. The insects were collected in corn and in irrigated rice in the lowland, county of Pelotas, area that produces corn and irrigated rice (side by side). The experiments were conducted, in controlled conditions of temperature (25 ± 1°C), relative humidity (70 ± 10%) and photophase (14 hours), with leaves of the corn hybrid Pionner 30F33 (40 days after the emergency). The leaves were powdered in Potter tower gauged for application of a volume of 1.7 ± 0.305mg cm-2, they were put in containers of plastics with cover, and individualized 25 caterpillars of 3rd instar of each biotype of S. frugiperda. The insecticides and concentrations evaluated were: chlorpyrifos [Lorsban 480 BR, 0.960g a.i. L-1 (Chlorophosphate)], lambda-cyhalothrin [Karate Zeon 50 CE, 0.003g a.i. L-1 (synthetic Piretroid)], lufenuron [Match CE, 0.006g a.i. L-1 (Acilureis)], methoxyfenozide [Intrepid 240 SC, 0.158g a.i. L-1 (Diacylhydrazine)] and spinosad [Tracer, 0.960g a.i. L-1 (Naturalyte)]. The evaluation of the mortality was accomplished 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours after the treatment. The biotype corn of S. frugiperda was less susceptible to the insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin, lufenuron and methoxyfenozide. The insecticides chlorpyrifos and spinosad were efficient in the control of the caterpillars of the biotypes corn and rice of S. frugiperda.

Spodoptera frugiperda é considerada uma das principais pragas da cultura do milho (lagarta-do-cartucho) e do arroz irrigado (lagarta-da-folha), ocasionando altos índices de desfolhamento. O objetivo do estudo foi obter uma dieta artificial adequada para criar os biótipos "milho" e "arroz" de S. frugiperda (J.E. Smith), em laboratório. Os insetos foram coletados em áreas cultivadas com milho e arroz irrigado no ecossistema de várzea e a identificação foi realizada pela análise do DNA genômico. O desenvolvimento dos dois biótipos foi acompanhado sobre a dieta de Greene e a mesma dieta modificada a 25 ± 1ºC, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 14 horas. O estudo foi realizado com 150 lagartas por dieta, individualizadas em tubos de vidro e contendo dieta artificial. Por ocasião da emergência, 20 casais foram individualizados e alimentados com solução aquosa de mel a 10%. A dieta Greene possibilitou melhor desenvolvimento dos dois biótipos, proporcionando maior velocidade de desenvolvimento, maior massa de lagartas no máximo desenvolvimento, massa de pupas e fecundidade total, além de valores mais elevados da taxa líquida de reprodução, taxa intrínseca de crescimento e taxa finita de aumento.

Spodoptera frugiperda is considered one of the main pest in corn and irrigated rice (fall armyworm) crops, causing high leaf losses. The objective of this study was to obtain an appropriate artificial diet to rear the biotypes "corn" and "rice" of S. frugiperda in laboratory. The insects were collected in areas cultivated with corn and irrigated rice in the meadow ecosystem and the identification was accomplished by the analysis of the DNA genomic. The development of the two biotypes was accompanied on Greene's diet and the same diet modified to 25 ± 1ºC, UR of 70 10% and fotofase of 14 hours. The study was accomplished with 150 larvae by diet individualized in glass tubes containing artificial diet. At emergency 20 couples were individualized and fed with aqueous solution of honey to 10%. The Greene diet made possible better development of the two biotypes, providing larger development speed, larger weight of larvae in the maximum development, weight of pupas and total fecundity, besides higher values of the net reproductive rates, intrinsic and finite rates of increase.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a biologia de populações de Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) em folhas de milho e arroz irrigado. Foram coletadas lagartas de quatro populações no Rio Grande do Sul: em áreas isoladas (distanciadas em mais de 300 km), municípios de Santa Rosa (M/SR) e Uruguaiana (A/U), tradicionalmente produtores de milho e arroz irrigado, respectivamente; e, em áreas adjacentes, município de Pelotas, que produz milho (M/P) e arroz irrigado (A/P) lado a lado. Individualizaram-se 150 lagartas em tubos de vidro contendo folhas do híbrido de milho Pioneer 30F33 e do cultivar de arroz irrigado Pelota, em condições controladas de temperatura (25 ± 1ºC), umidade relativa (70 ± 10%) e fotofase (14h). Por ocasião da emergência dos adultos, 20 casais foram individualizados em gaiolas cilíndricas de PVC revestidas internamente com papel jornal, e alimentados com solução aquosa de mel a 10%. As populações de S. frugiperda originárias do milho e arroz, independente do local de coleta, apresentaram necessidades fisiológicas intrínsecas e que são evidenciadas nos diferentes parâmetros biológicos avaliados. As populações M/SR e M/P (cultura do milho) e A/U e A/P (cultura do arroz irrigado), não apresentaram diferenças fisiológicas. Diante dos resultados, conclui-se que ambos biótipos "milho" e "arroz" de S. frugiperda ocorrem no Rio Grande do Sul.

The objective of this work was to analyze the biology of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) populations in corn and irrigated rice leaves. Caterpillars from four populations from Rio Grande do Sul state were collected from isolated areas (distant more than 300 km apart), from the counties of Santa Rosa (M/SR) and Uruguaiana (A/U), traditional areas of corn and irrigated rice production, respectively, and in adjacent areas in Pelotas county, where corn (M/P) and rice (A/P) are grown side by side. In the laboratory, 150 caterpillars were individualized in glass vials containing leaves of the Pioneer 30F33 corn hybrid and the cultivar of the irrigated rice Pelota, under controlled temperature (25 ± 1ºC), relative humidity (70 ± 10%) and photophase (14h). After adult emergence, 20 couples were individualized in cylindrical PVC cages, covered inside with paper towels, and fed with a 10% honey aqueous solution. All populations of S. frugiperda collected from corn and rice, regardless their place of origin, showed unique physiological needs, as evidenced by the different biological parameters evaluated. The Populations M/SR and M/P (maize) and A/U and A/P (irrigated rice), did not differ physiologically. Based on the results, both "corn" and "rice" S. frugiperda biotypes are present in Rio Grande do Sul.

A lagarta-das-fruteiras Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) tem causado prejuízos significativos em frutíferas cultivadas no Sul do Brasil com destaque para o caquizeiro, pessegueiro e videira. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se a resposta de machos de A. sphaleropa a diferentes formulações e doses do feromônio sexual sintético e a longevidade das formulações mais eficientes no campo. As formulações contendo Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1), Z11,13-14Al + Z11,13-14Ac (9:1) e Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al (9:1) (1,0 mg/septo) foram as mais eficientes na captura de machos quando comparadas com fêmeas virgens. A dose de 1,0 mg/septo foi significativamente superior a 0,1 mg na captura de A. sphaleropa para as três formulações. A formulação Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1), na dose de 1,0 mg/septo, foi eficiente por pelo menos 75 dias, enquanto que a Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al (9:1) por até 60 dias. Para futuros trabalhos visando o monitoramento de A. sphaleropa com feromônio sexual na cultura do caquizeiro, recomenda-se o emprego das formulações Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1) na dose de 1,0 mg/septo, substituindo os septos de borracha a cada 75 dias.

Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) has been leading to significative damage in cultivated fruits such as persimmon, peach and grape in Southern Brazil. In the present work, the response of A. sphaleropa males to different formulations and doses of the synthetic sexual pheromone was evaluated, as well as the duration of the most efficient formulations under field conditions. Formulations containing Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1), Z11,13-14Al + Z11,13-14Ac (9: 1) and Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al (9: 1) (1.0 mg/ dispenser) were the most efficient as male attractants when compared to unmated females. The concentration of 1.0 mg/ dispenser was significantly more attractive than the 0.1 mg/ dispenser for the three formulations. The formulation Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1), at 1.0 mg/dispenser, was efficient for at least 75 days, while the attractiveness of Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al (9:1) lasted 60 days. Further field experiments should employ the formulation Z11,13-14Ac + Z11,13-14Al + Z11-14Al (4:4:1) at 1.0 mg/dispenser, being dispensers replaced at 75-days intervals.

A demanda por processos agrícolas racionais, em detrimento da utilização de estratégias convencionais, tem contribuído para o desenvolvimento de técnicas de controle biológico, como a utilização de parasitóides de ovos do gênero Trichogramma Westwood. Um entrave para sua utilização é a dificuldade na identificação das espécies, devido ao diminuto tamanho e à similaridade morfológica. Os marcadores moleculares acessam o genoma, evitando o efeito ambiental e conseqüentemente erros de identificação. Várias técnicas estão disponíveis e a técnica ISSR vem sendo empregada para a diferenciação rápida entre indivíduos próximos, devido ao elevado grau de polimorfismo, reprodutibilidade e baixo custo. Este trabalho objetivou mensurar o nível de diferenciação genética de linhagens de Trichogramma, mediante o emprego da técnica de ISSR. Cinco linhagens foram estudadas: três da espécie T. pretiosum Riley, uma da espécie T. atopovirilia Oatman & Platner e uma da espécie T. bruni Nagaraja. A identificação morfológica dos parasitóides foi realizada na ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba, SP. Após a extração do DNA e sua padronização, realizaram-se as reações de PCR utilizando-se 26 marcadores ISSR, dos quais 11 foram selecionados por apresentarem maior polimorfismo e consistência. Os dados moleculares foram transformados em matriz binária e analisados pelo programa estatístico NTSYS v. 2.1. Os 11 marcadores utilizados geraram 172 bandas polimórficas. A similaridade genética variou de 19% a 96%, permitindo concluir que a técnica ISSR é eficiente na identificação de polimorfismo de DNA em Trichogramma. Além disso, os resultados sugerem uma variação acentuada inter e intra-específica.

Demands for sustainable agricultural systems have forested the development of biological control techniques, such as the use of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma Westwood. However, the arduous identification of the parasitoid at the species level, due to the tiny size and the morphological similarities is an obstacle to increasing its use. Molecular markers are useful to reach the specimen genome and avoid environmental effects that could misguide identification. Several molecular markers techniques are available and the ISSR technique has been used to differentiate close individuals, due to its high polymorphism level, reproducibility and low cost. The objective of this study was to measure the level of genetic differentiation among five lines of Trichogramma, using ISSR markers: three belonging to the species T. pretiosum Riley, one to T. atopovirilia Oatman & Platner and one to T. bruni Nagaraja. Morphological identification of the parasitoids was conducted at ESALQ/USP - Piracicaba, SP. After DNA removal and standatization, PCR reactions were performed with 26 ISSR primers; 11 of them were selected because they presented greater polymorphism and consistency. Molecular data were converted into a binary matrix and analyzed (NTSYS v. 2.1). The 11 primers produced 172 polymorphic sections. Genetic similarity ranged from 19% to 96%, showing that the ISSR technique can efficiently identify DNA polymorphism in Trichogramma. Results also indicate important inter and intra-specific variations among the parasitoid lines.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura sobre a biologia dos biótipos "milho" e "arroz" de Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) e estimar o número de gerações por ano em laboratório e campo. Foram coletadas lagartas de quatro populações de S. frugiperda no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, identificadas eletroforeticamente como os biótipos "milho" e "arroz", em áreas isoladas, distanciadas entre si em mais de 300 km, produtoras de milho e arroz irrigado e em áreas adjacentes, que produzem milho e arroz irrigado lado a lado. A temperatura mais adequada para o desenvolvimento dos dois biótipos foi 25ºC. Em laboratório, podem ser obtidas 11,0 e 11,3 gerações ano-1 do biótipo "milho" proveniente de áreas isoladas e adjacentes, respectivamente. Foram estimadas 12,1 gerações ano-1 do biótipo "arroz" quando proveniente de áreas isoladas e 12,2 gerações ano-1 quando proveniente de áreas adjacentes. Em campo, estimou-se a ocorrência de 8,3 e 6,1 gerações ano-1 do biótipo "milho", respectivamente, em áreas isoladas e áreas adjacentes e 8,4 e 7,0 gerações ano-1 do biótipo "arroz", respectivamente, em áreas isoladas e áreas adjacentes. Em áreas adjacentes, o biótipo "arroz" apresenta uma geração a mais ao longo de um ano em relação ao biótipo "milho".

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the temperature on the biology of the biotypes "corn" and "rice" of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and to estimate the number of generations per year in laboratory and field. Caterpillars of four populations of S. frugiperda were collected in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, identified by electrophoresis as the biotypes "corn" and "rice" in isolated areas (spaced for more than 300 km), areas of corn and irrigated rice production, as well as in adjacent areas that produces corn and rice irrigated side by side. The most appropriate temperature for the development of the two biotypes was 25ºC. In laboratory, a number between 11.0 and 11.3 generations year-1 for the biotype "corn" can be obtained, originating from isolated and adjacent areas, respectively, and, for the biotype "rice", 12.1 and 12.2 generations year-1 when originating from isolated and adjacent areas, respectively. In the field, the occurrence of 8.3 and 6.1 generations year-1 for the biotype "corn" was estimated, respectively, in isolated and adjacent areas and 8.4 and 7.0 generations year-1 for the "rice" biotype, respectively, in isolated and adjacent areas. In adjacent areas, the "rice" biotype presents an extra generation per year in relation to the "corn" biotype.

São descritas todas as etapas da pesquisa, desenvolvidas de 1995 a 2000, para a síntese do feromônio sexual de Ecdytolopha aurantiana (Lima, 1927), visando ao monitoramento desta praga que causa perdas da ordem de 50 milhões de dólares ao ano à citricultura paulista. As pesquisas básicas são apresentadas, incluindo o desenvolvimento de uma dieta artificial para o inseto, estudo de suas exigências térmicas e hídricas, estudos comportamentais, síntese da substância atraente para o macho desde a formulação até a distribuição do feromônio ao agricultor, e a sua comercialização. Trata-se de um caso de sucesso, a um custo de 50 mil dólares, com pesquisas inter- e multidisciplinares e que pode ser adotado para outros insetos-praga do país.

All research steps, developed from 1995 to 2000, to synthesize the sex pheromone of Ecdytolopha aurantiana (Lima, 1927) are described, in order to monitoring this pest that causes losses in the order of 50 million dollars per year to citriculture in the State of São Paulo. The basic researches conducted are described, including the development of an artificial diet for the insect, the study of its temperature and humidity requirements, behavioral studies, and synthesis of the male-attracting substance up to the formulation and distribution of the pheromone to the grower, by means of its commercialization. It is a case of success, at a cost of 50 thousand dollars, involving inter- and multidisciplinary researches, which can be adopted to other insect pests in the country.

Conduziu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de determinar, mediante medidas de consumo e utilização de alimento, a temperatura mais adequada para a criação de Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. SMITH, 1797) em dieta artificial. Foram individualizadas 50 lagartas em recipientes de vidro de 2,5 cm de diâmetro x 8,5 cm de altura, mantidos a 25 ± 1ºC e 28 ± 1ºC, com umidade relativa de 70 ± 15% e fotofase 14 horas. Foram determinados, com base em matéria seca, o peso seco da lagarta no máximo desenvolvimento, do alimento consumido e das fezes eliminadas, e calculados os índices nutricionais: taxa de consumo relativo (RCR), taxa metabólica relativa (RMR), taxa de crescimento relativo (RGR), digestibilidade aproximada (AD), eficiência de conversão do alimento ingerido (ECI), eficiência de conversão do alimento digerido (ECD) e custo metabólico (100-ECD). Considerando que o peso das lagartas no máximo desenvolvimento foi similar nas duas temperaturas, a 28ºC houve maior ECI e ECD e um menor 100-ECD e, conseqüentemente, as lagartas de S. frugiperda consumiram uma menor quantidade de alimento, reduzindo a duração da fase larval. Assim, em laboratório, a temperatura de 28ºC é a mais adequada para manutenção de S. fru giperda em dieta artificial.

The aim of this work was to determine the most suitable temperature for rearing Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. SMITH, 1797) in artificial diet, by means of measuring food consumption and utilization. Fifty larvae were individualized in glass containers of 2.5 cm in diameter x 8.5 cm in height in climate chamber, at 25 ± 1ºC and 28 ± 1ºC temperature with 70 ± 15% relative humidity and 14 hours of photophase. Based on dry matter, were determined the dry weight of the larvae at maximum development, of the food consumed and of the feces eliminated, and the nutritional ratios were calculated: relative consumption ratio (RCR), relative metabolic ratio (RMR), relative growth ratio (RGR), approximate digestibilidade (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and the efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD). Considering that weight of larvae in maximum development was similar in two temperatures, at 28ºC were a larger ECI and ECD and lower 100-ECD, consequently, the larvae of S. frugiperda consumed a lower amount of food reducing the duration of larval phase. Thus, in laboratory, the temperature of 28ºC demonstrated to be the most appropriate for rearing of S. frugiperda in artificial diet.

Avaliou-se a biologia de Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) sobre três dietas artificiais com diferentes fontes protéicas (d1 = feijão branco, levedura de cerveja, farelo de soja, leite em pó e germe de trigo; d2 = feijão carioca e levedura de cerveja; d3 = farinha de milho, germe de trigo e levedura de cerveja), visando determinar a mais adequada para sua criação em laboratório. Devido à elevada polifagia apresentada por S. cosmioides, trabalhou-se com a hipótese de que dietas adequadas ao desenvolvimento de outros lepidópteros permitem a sua criação preenchendo requisitos mínimos de qualidade biológica, quantidade e economicidade. Embora S. cosmioides tenha completado o ciclo biológico nas três dietas, a d1 foi a mais adequada para a sua criação, proporcionando maior velocidade de desenvolvimento, maior viabilidade total e peso de pupas, além de valores mais elevados para taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro), capacidade inata de aumentar em número (r m) e razão finita de aumento (l). O número de ínstares variou de seis a sete, predominando seis na d1 e d3. Na d2, metade da população apresentou seis ínstares e metade sete. As fêmeas apresentaram duração da fase pupal significativamente menor do que os machos em todas as dietas, fazendo com que as fêmeas emergissem antes dos machos. A longevidade dos adultos não foi afetada pelas dietas, enquanto que a fecundidade total foi superior na d1 e d2. Recomenda-se a utilização da dieta 1 para a manutenção de criações de S. cosmioides em laboratório.

The biology of Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) was studied on three artificial diets with different protein sources (d1 = white bean, yeast extract, soybean flour, powder milk and wheat germ; d2 = 'carioca' bean and yeast extract; d3 = corn flour, wheat germ and yeast extract). The objective of this research was to determine the most suitable diet for mass rearing S. cosmioides in laboratory. The species is highly polyphagous, and for this reason we hypothesized that diets that are suitable for other Lepidoptera can allow its development and fulfill the minimum requirements of biological quality, quantity and economy. Although S. cosmioides has completed the biological cycle on the three diets, the d1 was the most suitable for its rearing and produced the fastest development, higher total survival and pupae weight, as well as higher net reproduction rate (Ro), intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) and finite rate of natural increase (l). The number of instars varied from six to seven, predominating six in d1 and d3; in d2, half the population presented six instars and half seven. Females presented pupae duration significantly lower that the males in all diets, thus emerging earlier. Adult longevity was not affected by the diets, while total fecundity was higher in d1 and d2. In conclusion, the diet 1 is recommended to mass rearing S. cosmioides in the laboratory.

Durante a safra de 2000/2001 foi observado o ataque de Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) em pomares comerciais de pessegueiro na Serra Gaúcha, RS. As lagartas raspam a epiderme dos frutos, principalmente na região de inserção do pedúnculo ou em locais de contato entre folhas e frutos, depreciando-os comercialmente. As perdas na colheita, mesmo com controle químico, foram de aproximadamente 2%; porém, muitos produtores têm confundido o dano de A. sphaleropa com Grapholita molesta (Busck), empregando inseticidas de forma errônea para o controle da última.

During the 2000/2001 season, the polyphagous leafroller Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) caused damage in commercial peach orchards, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Caterpillars scrape the fruit epidermis, mainly at the insertion of the stalk or in the junction of the leaves and fruits, depreciating them commercially. Despite conventional chemical treatments, losses were around 2%; however, many growers have mistaken the A. sphaleropa damage as caused by Grapholita molesta (Busck), and have used insecticides to control the last one.

O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar, através de medidas de consumo e utilização de alimento natural, a existência de raças de Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) nas culturas do milho e do arroz irrigado no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram coletadas quatro populações: uma em Santa Rosa, região tradicionalmente produtora de milho; uma em Uruguaiana, região tradicionalmente produtora de arroz; e duas em Pelotas, região que produz milho e arroz lado a lado (uma em milho e outra em arroz). Individualizaram-se 20 lagartas de cada população (segunda geração) em placas de Petri, mantidas em BOD à temperatura de 25ºC, UR 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 14h. As lagartas foram alimentadas com folhas de seus respectivos hospedeiros, o híbrido de milho BRS 8330 e a cultivar de arroz irrigado Embrapa 6-Chuí. As folhas de ambos hospedeiros foram submetidas a análise bromatológica. Foram determinados o peso seco da lagarta no máximo desenvolvimento, do alimento consumido, e das fezes eliminadas, e calculados os índices nutricionais: taxa de consumo relativo (RCR), taxa metabólica relativa (RMR), taxa de crescimento relativo (RGR), digestibilidade aproximada (AD), eficiência de conversão do alimento ingerido (ECI), eficiência de conversão do alimento digerido (ECD) e custo metabólico (100 - ECD). O arroz apresentou-se mais adequado para a alimentação dos insetos, pois foi ingerido em menor quantidade, apresentando menor 100 - ECD, e maior ECI e ECD. Evidencia-se forte possibilidade de existirem duas raças de S. frugiperda no Rio Grande do Sul, a "raça do milho" e a "raça do arroz", morfologicamente iguais e fisiologicamente diferentes.

The goal of this work was to determine by means of consumption and utilization of natural food, the existence of strains of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)in different areas of corn and irrigated rice in Rio Grande do Sul. Four populations were collected: one in Santa Rosa, traditional area of corn cropping; one in Uruguaiana, traditional area of rice; and two in Pelotas, where corn and rice are planted side by side. In the laboratory, 20 larvae were individualized (second generation) and kept in petri dishes, in BOD, at 25ºC temperature, 70 ± 10% RH and 14h photophase. The larvae were fed on leaves of their respective hosts, hybrid of corn BRS 8330 and the cultivar of irrigated rice Embrapa 6-Chuí. The leaves of both hosts were submitted to bromatological analysis. The dry weight of the larva at maximum development, food consumed and feces eliminated were determined and the nutritional ratios were calculated: relative consumption ratio (RCR), relative metabolic ratio (RMR), relative growth ratio (RGR), approximate digestibilidade (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) and the metabolic cost (100 - ECD). Rice was more suitable as food for S. frugiperda; it was ingested in smaller amount, presented smaller 100 - ECD and larger ECI and ECD. A strong possibility of existence of two strains of S. frugiperda is evidenced in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the corn and rice strains, which are morphologically similar but physiologically different.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a biologia de Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) em diferentes temperaturas e determinar suas exigências térmicas, visando fornecer subsídios para a criação do inseto em laboratório. Para isso, os períodos embrionário e pós-embrionário foram avaliados em sete temperaturas (14, 18, 22, 25, 28, 30 e 32ºC), em câmaras climatizadas, com fotofase de 14h. As lagartas foram criadas em dieta artificial, tendo como fontes protéicas feijão branco, farelo de soja, levedura de cerveja, germe de trigo e leite em pó. A duração do período embrionário decresceu com o aumento da temperatura na faixa de 14°C a 25°C, mantendo-se constante entre 28°C e 32°C. Para os demais estágios (lagarta, pré-pupa e pupa), foi observada uma relação inversa entre a temperatura e a duração na faixa de 14°C a 30°C, estendendo-se a 32°C para pupas. A duração da fase de pupa dos machos foi maior do que das fêmeas, o que promoveu assincronia na emergência de adultos. As temperaturas bases do período embrionário, fase de larva, pré-pupa, pupa e ciclo total foram 9,34°C; 11,65°C; 9,65°C; 11,08°C e 11,23ºC, com constantes térmicas de 62,73 graus-dia (GD); 254,61 GD; 33,42 GD; 177,55 GD e 525,11 GD, respectivamente. Avaliando-se, separadamente, a fase de pupa, as temperaturas bases foram 11,25°C para machos e 10,81ºC para fêmeas, com constantes térmicas de 188,26 GD para machos e 165,47 GD para fêmeas. Para o ciclo total, a temperatura base e a constante térmica para machos foram 11,28°C e 535,85 GD. Para as fêmeas, estas mesmas variáveis foram 11,15°C e 513,17 GD. Concluiu-se que a faixa de temperatura mais adequada para o desenvolvimento de S. cosmioides situa-se entre 25ºC e 28ºC, na qual pode-se obter de 9,6 a 11,7 gerações anuais do inseto, em condições de laboratório.

The biology of Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) was studied under different temperatures and its thermal requirements were determined, aiming to aid the rearing of this insect in the laboratory. Embryonic and post-embryonic periods were evaluated at seven different temperatures (14, 18, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 32ºC) under environmental chamber conditions, with 14h photophase. The caterpillars were reared on an artificial diet containing white bean, soybean meal, yeast extract, wheat germ and powder milk as source of protein. The extent of the embryonic period decreased with the increase of temperature within the 14ºC to 25ºC temperature range, remaining constant between 28ºC and 32ºC. For the other phases (caterpillar, pre-pupa and pupa) an inverse relationship between temperature and duration was observed within the 14ºC to 30ºC temperature range, extending to 32°C for pupae. Duration of pupal phase for males was larger than for females resulting in asynchronous adult emergence. The temperature thresholds for the embryonic, larval, pre-pupal, pupal periods and total cycle were 9.34ºC, 11.65ºC, 9.65ºC, 11.08ºC and 11.23ºC, with thermal constants of 62,73 degree-days (DD), 254.61DD, 33.42DD, 177.55DD and 525.11DD, respectively. Evaluating the pupal phase alone, the threshold temperatures were 11.25ºC for males and 10.81ºC for females, with thermal constants of 188.26DD for males and 165.47DD for females. For total cycle, the threshold temperature and the thermal constant for males were 11.28ºC and 535.85DD, whereas for females the same variables had values of 11.15ºC and 513.17DD. So, the most adequate temperature for the development of S. cosmioides is within the range of 25ºC and 28ºC, where 9.6 to 11.7 generations of the insect can be annually obtained, in laboratory conditions.
