Objective: To systematically review the literature focusing on obstetric and perinatal outcomes in women with previous or current eating disorders (EDs) and on the consequences of maternal EDs for the offspring. Methods: The study was performed following the systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. PubMed, SciELO, and Cochrane databases were searched for non-interventional studies published in English or Portuguese from January 1980 to December 2020. Risk of bias was assessed using the Methods guide for effectiveness and comparative effectiveness reviews (American Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). Results: The search yielded 441 records, and 30 articles were included. The psychiatric outcome associated with EDs in women was mainly perinatal depression. The most prevalent obstetric outcomes observed in women with EDs were vomiting, hyperemesis, bleeding, and anemia. Most studies found maternal anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa to be associated with low birth weight and slow fetal growth. Women with binge EDs delivered children with increased birth weight. Of the 30 studies included, methodological quality was good in seven, fair in eight, and poor in 15 studies. Conclusion: A considerable body of evidence was reviewed to assess obstetric and perinatal outcomes in EDs. Acute and lifetime EDs, especially if severe, correlated with poor perinatal, obstetric, and neonatal outcomes. Obstetricians and general practitioners should be vigilant and screen for EDs during pregnancy.

Objective: This study translated, culturally adapted, and validated a Brazilian Portuguese version (SCOFF-BR) of the Sick, Control, One Stone, Fat, Food Questionnaire (SCOFF) to screen eating disorders in young adults. Methods: This study used back-translation to culturally adapt the questionnaire according to International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research principles. The SCOFF-BR validation process involved a sample of men and women aged 18-32 years from a university community. After the participants completed the SCOFF-BR questionnaire, pre-trained researchers interviewed them with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The presence of eating disorders was determined according to DSM-5 criteria. Results: Of the 361 subjects, 9.7% had an eating disorder (2.2% anorexia nervosa, 5% bulimia nervosa, and 2.5% binge-eating disorder). Using a cutoff point of two positive responses, we obtained a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 71.5%, with an accuracy of 72.3%. The positive and negative predictive values were 23.1% and 97.1%, respectively. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the Brazilian version of the SCOFF questionnaire presents satisfactory accuracy and reliability to screen eating disorders among young adults in the Brazilian university community.

Abstract Edge effects are environmental settings that, in turn, alter the structure and composition of marginal vegetation in a forest. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the length, in meters, in the strip exposed to the edge effect in two fragments of the Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. The report was carried out in two different areas. In such areas, 30 plots of 10 x 10 m were plotted, demarcated from the floral border, arranged in three transects, where all individuals with a circumference at 1.30 m in height and diameter ≥ 15 cm were sampled and cut. For an evaluation of the floristic scope of the method and the sampling sufficiency, a curve of specific area was elaborated, based on the distance in relation to the border and the regression that best fits the curve was calculated. Then, two similarity dendrograms were prepared, based on the presence/absence of species in each plot and the number of plots per plot. In total, 955 tree isolates were sampled. An area curve of one of the study sites stabilized after 40 m shows that there were no new species in this range. However, a curve resumed an increase from 50 m. In another area, the richness stabilization of the plots occurred at 60 m from the edge, with an increase in new species at 70 m. In one of the evaluated areas, the edge effect reached 30 m towards the interior of the forest, while in the second evaluated area, the distance was 70 m.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

OBJECTIVE: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is characterized by high contagiousness, as well as variable clinical manifestations and immune responses. The antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 is directly related to viral clearance and the antibodies' ability to neutralize the virus and confer long-term immunity. Nevertheless, the response can also be associated with disease severity and evolution. This study correlated the clinical characteristics of convalescent COVID-19 patients with immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. METHODS: This study included 51 COVID-19 health care professionals who were candidates for convalescent plasma donation from April to June 2020. The subjects had symptomatic COVID-19 with a polymerase chain reaction-confirmed diagnosis. We measured anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgA and IgG antibodies after symptom recovery, and the subjects were classified as having mild, moderate, or severe symptoms. RESULTS: Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were positive in most patients (90.2%). The antibody indexes for IgA and IgG did not differ significantly between patients presenting with mild or moderate symptoms. However, they were significantly higher in patients with severe symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed an association between higher antibody indexes and severe COVID-19 cases, and several hypotheses regarding the association of the antibody dynamics and severity of the disease in SARS-CoV-2 infection have been raised, although many questions remain unanswered.

ABSTRACT In rice, the use of the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense has shown to be very useful for the crop, being able to increase the final productivity of the same or reduce the need for nitrogen in topdressing. It has recently been noted that there are other regulators that perform other functions, such as thidiazuron (TDZ), a cytokinin-like substance that has been shown to significantly increase upland rice productivity. Thus, the present work aimed to verify the effect of the interaction between the foliar application of A. brasilense and thidiazuron doses applied at the occasion of the tillering of the plants on the productive aspects and crop productivity. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural years of 2015/16 and 2016/17, at the UNESP Teaching, Research and Extension Farm belonging to the Engineering Faculty of Ilha Solteira - UNESP, located in the municipality of Selvíria, MS. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 4 factorial scheme with four replicates. The treatments were the combination of the presence or absence of A. brasilense foliar application with doses of TDZ (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g ha-1) applied to upland rice cultivar BRS Esmeralda. Based on the results obtained for plant height, number of panicles per square meter, total number of grains and fertility of spikelets, mass of 100 grains and grain yield, it was concluded that, in the two agricultural years observed, there were no interaction and individual effects of the foliar application of the bacteria, and of the TDZ doses used at the time of tillering in the BRS Esmeralda cultivar.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Surface coal mining causes an intense topographic and hydrologic change in the area with suppression of local vegetation, degrading the environment. One main problem presented by the rehabilitated soil refers to physical disruption of the soil, which delays the regrowth of plant species in the mining area. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of four grass species in the retrieval of the rehabilitated soil's physical properties at a recovered coal mine area in Candiota, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. With the data an ANOVA was performed and treatments means were compared using Tukey test (p ≤0.05). The treatments were: T1-Hemarthria altissima; T2-Paspalum notatum; T3-Cynodon dactylon; T4-Urochloa brizantha; a rehabilitated soil without vegetation cover was used as control. Preserved soil samples after 78 months were collected in the 0.00-0.10 m and 0.10-0.20 m layers to determine bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity and available water capacity. The process of rehabilitation of coal mined areas was slow due to the high degree of degradation that occurs during the extraction of coal and the topographic recovery of the area, adversely affecting the structural quality of the soils. The assessed grasses showed potential to reclaim these areas, since improvements were observed in the values of the soil attributes over time, especially in the 0.00-0.10 m layer. After 78 months of evaluation, U. brizantha showed the higher potential to recover the physical properties of the compacted rehabilitated mine soils.

The use of fetal calf serum (FCS), although widely employed during in vitro production (IVP) of bovine embryos, has limitations. FCS is an undefined media and may have harmful effects on the quality of embryos. For this reason, in recent years, research efforts aimed at improving IVP of bovine embryos, have focused at the replacement of FCS by alternative compounds in culture media. In this study, fatty acid free bovine serum albumin (BSA-FAF) and embryonic fluid (EF) were used separately or in combination, in different concentrations, to replace or reduce the concentration of FCS during in vitro maturation (IVM). For this purpose, bovine oocytes were in vitro matured under different treatments and were assigned to one of the following groups (G) according to the protein supplementation: G1 (control) = 10% FCS, G2 = 8mg/mL BSA-FAF, G3 = 10% EF, G4 = 6mg/mL BSA-FAF + 5% FCS, G5 = 6mg/mL BSA-FAF + 3.5% FCS + 1.5% EF, G6 = 6mg/mL BSA-FAF + 1.5% FCS + 3.5% EF, G7 = 6mg/mL BSA-FAF + 5% EF, and G8 = 5% FCS + 5% EF). After 24 hours of IVM, oocytes were classified according to the meiotic progression and migration of cortical granules (CG) to the periphery. Maturation rates were evaluated by chi-square test (χ2) or, when appropriate, by Fisher's exact test, and orthogonal contrasts were performed to isolate effects of the compounds. The group supplemented with BSA-FAF (G2) had a lower number of oocytes that reached MII (75%) compared to the groups G1, G4, G5 and G8 (88.9%, 89.6%, 87% and 86.8%, respectively), with no difference in relation to G3 (79.8%), G6 (82.9%) and G7 (82.9%). Moreover, G3 also showed inferior nuclear maturation rate when compared to G4. Regarding cytoplasmic maturation, the rates were reduced to 43.9%, 43.2%, 43.1% and 36.5% in G2, G7, G6 and G3 groups, respectively, compared to the control group (G1; 62.4%). On the other hand, in the groups G8, G4 and G5, maturation rates were not affected by reduction of FCS, where 59.3%, 51.3% and 50.8% of the oocytes displayed CG arranged peripherally, respectively. The results obtained by the orthogonal contrast test are in accordance with the ones from the evaluation of the nuclear maturation and cortical granules migration. These data show the need of FCS on the MIV, even in low concentrations, and the possibility of decrease its concentration by associating it with BSA-FAF and/or EF. Therefore, we concluded that it is possible to reduce the concentration of FCS in IVM medium to a concentration of 3.5% without affecting nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation rates.

Non-polluting aqueous polyurethane-based dispersions were synthesized in the presence and absence of montmorillonite hydrophilic clay (WPUs and CWPUs, respectively). The permeability of carbon dioxide (CO2) through dense membranes obtained from the dispersions was evaluated. The reagents used in the synthesis of the materials were: poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), block copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(propylene glycol) (EG-b-PG), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and ethylene diamine (EDA) as chain extender, leading to the formation of urea linkages. The proportion of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments and clay content (0.5 and 1%) was varied in the formulations. The dispersions were evaluated in terms of solids content and apparent viscosity. The membranes were characterized by infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and permeability to carbon dioxide (CO2). The influence on the gas barrier properties, imparted by different contents of PEG segments in polyurethane chains, and by the clay in the formulations was verified. The permeability of CO2 increased with increasing amounts of PEG segments and decreased with the insertion of clay, since the latter is impermeable to gas and forms, in the polymeric matrix, tortuous pathways that retard gas diffusion.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a severe and progressive disease. Its early diagnosis is the greatest clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence and extension of the delayed myocardial contrast-enhanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance, as well as to verify if the percentage of the myocardial fibrosis mass is a severity predictor. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 30 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension of groups I and IV, subjected to clinical, functional and hemodynamic evaluation, and to cardiac magnetic resonance. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 52 years old, with female predominance (77%). Among the patients, 53% had right ventricular failure at diagnosis, and 90% were in functional class II/III. The mean of the 6-minute walk test was 395m. In hemodynamic study with right catheterism, the mean average pulmonary arterial pressure was 53.3mmHg, of the cardiac index of 2.1L/ min.m², and median right atrial pressure was 13.5 mmHg. Delayed myocardial contrast-enhanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance was found in 28 patients. The mean fibrosis mass was 9.9 g and the median percentage of fibrosis mass was 6.17%. The presence of functional class IV, right ventricular failure at diagnosis, 6-minute walk test < 300 meters and right atrial pressure > 15mmHg, with cardiac index < 2.0L/ min.m², there was a relevant association with the increased percentage of myocardial fibrosis. CONCLUSION: The percentage of the myocardial fibrosis mass indicates a non-invasive marker with promising perspectives in identifying patients with high risk factors for pulmonary hypertension.

The Brazilian market of herbal medicine is in increasing expansion; however, the lack of standardization and the bad quality of the plant raw materials constitute a crucial problem for the production of quality herbal medicines. In this work, herbal drugs consisting of leaves (samples A, B, C) and tinctures (samples D, E, F) of guaco purchased in the Central Market and from pharmacies in Belo Horizonte, respectively, were evaluated. Physical-chemical tests such as organoleptic characterization, determination of foreign matter, total ash and water content were performed on the samples of herbal drugs. The organoleptic characterization, measures of pH and density of the tincture samples were also determined. TLC and RP-HPLC profiles of the herbal drugs and tinctures were obtained and the quantification of coumarin (used as a marker compound) by RP HPLC was determined. The analyzed samples showed one or more of the evaluated parameters outside of the values recognized by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. This demonstrates the need for the quality control of the plant raw materials, in order to guarantee quality and safety in herbal medicine.

A temperatura influenciou o desenvolvimento do ácaro A. lacunatus.
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of six different temperatures on the development of Acarophenax lacunatus (Cross & Krantz) using eggs of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) as hosts. The temperature affected the development of A. lacunatus. The largest values for the progeny (19 mites in T. castaneum and 15 mites in C. ferrugineus) were obtained at about 30ºC, as also observed for the net reproductive rate (Ro), which revealed that the A. lacunatus population increased 18 times in T. castaneum and 14 times in C. ferrugineus in a generation. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m) gradually increased with temperature, reaching the maximum value at 35ºC in T. castaneum (1,608) and C. ferrugineus (1,289). The generation time was negatively correlated with temperature, ranging from 1,60 to 4,85 days in T. castaneum and from 1,96 to 5,34 days in C. ferrugineus. These results suggest that the mite A. lacunatus may be used in programs of biological control of T. castaneum and C. ferrugineus in the tropics.

The current sugarcane management techniques employed involve vigorous soil revolvement with ploughs, heavy disks and subsoilers before planting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of modification of some physical properties of a kaolinitic Oxisol (LVd) and a kaolinitic - oxidic Oxisol (LVdf) under sugarcane and native forest in Jaboticabal county, São Paulo state, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 x 3 split plot scheme (four managements and three depths), with four replications. The following systems were used: plant sugarcane (CP); second ratoon sugarcane (C2), fourth ratoon cane (C4) and native forest (NF). The soil bulk density (BD), porosity and aggregate stability were evaluated in the 0-0.10; 0.10-0.20; 0.20-0.30 m layers. The effects of land use and management systems on the physical attributes at the studied depths were verified by analysis of variance, and significant means were compared by the Tukey's test (5%). The highest macroporosity and lowest microporosity in relation with the cultivated areas was observed for the LVdf under NF. However, only total porosity and BD in C2 and C4 differed from those in the NF. The longer the sugarcane cultivation time, the higher the BD, and the lower the macroporosity in both Oxisols. Nevertheless, the higher the Fe oxide content in the LVdf resulted in higher total porosity and lower BD, maintaining the porosity above 0.10 m³ m-³ in all management systems and soil layers. The sugarcane cultivation reduced the aggregate stability in relation to the NF.
