Lisdexamfetamine is a prodrug that is converted to d-amphetamine in the body, mainly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adults. Its mechanism involves the enhancement of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine, which are critical for attention and behavioral regulation. With the upcoming patent expiration of Vyvanse®, bioanalytical methods for the quantification of lisdexamfetamine in plasma are needed for use in pharmacokinetic studies. In this work, we developed and validated a sensitive bioanalytical method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for lisdexamfetamine quantification in human plasma. The method developed was performed for 4 min per sample and using the concentration range of 0.3-100 ng mL-1. Intra-batch, inter-batch and instrument reproducibility, the precision was lower than 10%. Abstract We examined pesticide contamination in honey from Africanized honey bees in two different seasons, and evaluated the concentration and incidence of these compounds in georeferenced apiaries to provide relevant information for food safety and environmental quality. The land use and occupation of the region were evaluated by selecting 15 apiaries and georeferencing three randomly selected colonies of Africanized honey bees within each apiary. Honey samples were collected during two seasons, and three organochlorine pesticides (p.p`-DDE, Mitotane and Bicyclo[2.2.1]) and four organophosphate pesticides (Ethoprophos, Methyl Parathion, Chlorpyrifos and Fenchlorphos) were analyzed in the honey using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. 80% of the apiaries showed a predominance of agricultural land use in the foraging areas of the bees. There was a higher concentration of pesticides in samples collected during Season I compared to Season II. There were differences in the proportion of samples contaminated with pesticides between seasons. Some honey samples showed concentrations of the chlorpyrifos pesticide above the levels recommended by Brazilian legislation. Abstract Structure and function are strongly related in bromeliad leaves. Some species do not develop tank rosettes and must rely on other structural and physiological attributes to deal with environmental stressors. Three species of Bromeliaceae without tanks were compared according to their leaf structure (anatomy and pectin composition), water retention abilities, and photosynthetic pathway expressions. Tillandsia stricta is an epiphyte, shaded by the canopy in a riparian forest, T. usneoides occurs on palm trees in an adjacent opened area, while Dyckia minarum is terrestrial and exposed to high light intensities in rupestrian fields. Despite limiting light and/or water conditions in each habitat, these species occur in adjacent areas. While they express CAM metabolism, D. minarum demonstrated more expressive acidity. Its greater investments in tissues related to water absorption and retention may reflect its high exposure to sunlight, poor nutrient availability for growth, and CAM expression. Tillandsia usneoides modifies its water-storing capacity between seasons, a property possibly associated with the presence of high methyl-esterified HGs in its cell walls. Resumo Estrutura e função estão fortemente associadas nas folhas de bromélias. Algumas espécies não desenvolvem rosetas em tanque e devem apresentar outros atributos estruturais e fisiológicos para lidar com fatores estressores do ambiente. Três espécies de Bromeliaceae sem tanque foram comparadas de acordo com sua estrutura foliar (anatomia e composição péctica), capacidade de retenção de água e expressão da via fotossintética. Delas, Tillandsia stricta é epífita sombreada pela copa de uma mata ciliar, T. usneoides ocorre em palmeiras em uma área adjacente aberta e Dyckia minarum é terrestre e exposta a altas intensidades luminosas em campo rupestre. Apesar das condições limitantes de luz e/ou água em cada habitat, estas espécies ocorrem em áreas adjacentes. Abstract Large meteorite impacts release kinetic energy that induces rock deformation, high temperatures and fluid circulation during the cratering process. To understand the correlation between rock deformation and fluid circulation, it is relevant to investigate post-impact hydrothermal flux and its relation to the local geology. The Cerro do Jarau impact structure is a ~13.5 km diameter impact structure located in southern Brazil and formed on Cretaceous continental flood basalts of the Serra Geral Formation and underlying sedimentary strata. This study collected ground gamma-ray data over the structure and produced K, eTh and eU concentrations, eTh/K ratio and F-factor maps to characterize it in terms of its radiometric signatures and their respective spatial distribution. A general decrease in the concentration of the three elements was observed from the outer-rim towards the center of the crater. The central area is defined by very low radiometric values, with relatively high K values, thus indicating the occurrence of K-bearing rocks. Numerical simulations using the HYDROTHERM 3 code showed the fluid circulation pattern over the impact structure. Abstract Presently, Myloplus schomburgkii is the most easily recognized species among the serrasalmids by having a vertical black bar in the middle of the body. However, through a broad taxonomic review, including DNA barcoding and morphological analyses, we were able to identify and describe two new species that also share a dark vertical bar on the flank. In addition, we redescribe M. schomburgkii, designating a neotype and restricting the type-locality to rio Negro in Barcelos, Amazonas State, Brazil. The three lineages of black-barred pacus present high molecular divergences (7.9–11%) and can be distinguished by differences in the shape of the vertical bar, shape of females’ anal fin, number of total vertebrae, number of total branched dorsal-fin rays, among other characters. Although the existence of these two new species has been hidden due to many morphological similarities, mainly the presence of the black bar, the three lineages do not compose a monophyletic group, with one of the new species being recovered as sister to Ossubtus xinguense. This result reinforces the necessity of the redefinition of the Myleini genera. Resumo Atualmente, Myloplus schomburgkii representa a espécie mais facilmente reconhecida entre os serrasalmídeos, por apresentar uma barra preta vertical no meio do corpo. No entanto, através de uma ampla revisão taxonômica, incluindo DNA barcoding e análises morfológicas, conseguimos identificar e descrever duas novas espécies que também compartilham a barra vertical escura no flanco. Além disso, redescrevemos M. schomburgkii, designando um neótipo e restringindo a localidade-tipo ao rio Negro, Barcelos, Estado do Amazonas, Brasil. As três linhagens de pacus de barra preta apresentam altas divergências moleculares (7,9–11%) e podem ser morfologicamente distinguidas por diferenças na forma da barra vertical, forma da nadadeira anal nas fêmeas, número de vértebras totais, número de raios ramificados na nadadeira dorsal, entre outros caracteres. Embora a existência dessas duas novas espécies tenha sido ocultada devido a grandes semelhanças morfológicas, principalmente pela presença da barra vertical preta, as três linhagens não compõem um grupo monofilético, com uma das novas espécies sendo recuperada como irmã de Ossubtus xinguense. Abstract Despite the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy, studies focusing exclusively on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) admissions remain limited. This study investigates the impact of maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, and/or crack, on neonatal outcomes among infants admitted to three Brazilian NICUs. Additionally, the investigation explores the impact of substance use on DNA damage in newborns. Over a one-year period, data from 254 newborns were collected through medical records, accompanied by blood samples. Findings revealed that 16.1% of newborns had mothers reporting substance use during pregnancy. Significant associations were found between maternal substance use and adverse neonatal outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and sexually transmitted infections. Maternal variables linked to substance use encompassed non-white skin color, low education, non-masonry housing, lower income, diseases in other children, and fewer prenatal consultations. Notably, neonatal DNA damage showed no significant association with substance use. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of mineral sources and rosemary oil levels in the diet of commercial layers on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the waste generated. Manure was obtained from 288 commercial laying hens of the HyLine Brown lineage (semi-heavy layers) at 30 weeks of age over a period of 112 d (four cycles of 28 d). A completely randomized design was used with a 2×3 factorial scheme with repeated measures over time (16 repetitions), with two mineral sources (inorganic and organic) and three levels of rosemary oil (0, 100, and 200 mg kg-1). The waste was collected weekly, weighed, and the calculations of waste production, residue coefficient (RC) were performed. Also analyses of total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), pH, macro-, and micro-minerals were performed. Mineral sources affect the quality characteristics of the manure. Resumo Realizou-se este estudo com o objetivo de avaliar fontes de minerais e de níveis do óleo de alecrim na dieta de poedeiras comerciais sobre as características qualitativas e quantitativas dos dejetos gerados. Os dejetos foram provenientes de 288 poedeiras comerciais da linhagem HyLine Brown (poedeiras semipesadas) com 30 semanas de idade, durante o período de 112 dias (4 ciclos de 28 dias). Foi utilizado delineamento inteiramente casualizado com esquema fatorial 2x3 com medidas repetidas no tempo (16 repetições), sendo duas fontes minerais (inorgânica e orgânica) e três níveis de óleo de alecrim (0, 100 e 200 mg kg-1). Semanalmente os dejetos foram coletados, pesados e realizados os cálculos de produção de dejetos, coeficiente de resíduo (Cr) e as análises de sólidos totais (ST), sólidos voláteis (SV), pH, macro e microminerais. RESUMEN Los barrenadores del tallo del género de Diatraea spp. (Lepidoptera:Crambidae) han sido reconocidos por ser la plaga de mayor impacto en el cultivo de caña de azúcar, en el que causan importantes pérdidas económicas. Para su control, una cepa colombiana de Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill (aislamiento Bv062) que demostró alta virulencia frente a larvas de D. saccharalis (Fabricius), fue utilizada para el desarrollo de un bioinsecticida formulado como un concentrado emulsionable (CE). Con el fin de integrar este bioinsecticida en un esquema de manejo integrado de plagas, es necesario evaluar su compatibilidad con los agroquímicos utilizados comúnmente en el cultivo de caña de azúcar. Para tal fin se evaluó el efecto in vitro de 11 agroquímicos (fungicidas, insecticidas y herbicidas) sobre la germinación y actividad insecticida de conidios formulados. Inicialmente el CE y los agroquímicos fueron ajustados al doble de la concentración recomendada y mezclados en proporción 1:1, se incubaron durante dos horas, y se determinó el porcentaje de germinación. Los conidios expuestos a los agroquímicos fueron también purificados y utilizados para un bioen-sayo frente a larvas de segundo instar de D. saccharalis. El CE resultó ser compatible con los herbicidas e insecticidas evaluados, manteniendo una germinación y eficacia superior al 80%. Por el contrario, el CE fue incompatible con todos los fungicidas evaua-dos. Estos resultados permiten sugerir recomendaciones de aplicación del bioplaguicida a base de B. bassiana Bv062, junto con insecticidas y herbicidas empleados en el cultivo de caña, pero se recomienda no aplicarlo de manera simultánea con fungicidas como el benomil y del grupo de triazoles. Se recomienda validar estos resultados en condiciones de campo.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane stem borers of the genus Diatraea spp. (Lepidoptera:Crambidae) have been recognized as the pest of the greatest impact on sugarcane crops causing significant economic losses. For its control, a colombian strain of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill (code Bv062) that showed a high virulence against D. saccharalis (Fabricius) larvae was used for a biopesticide development, formulated as emulsifiable concentrate (EC). In order to include the EC into an integrated pest management (IPM) scheme, it is necessary to evaluate its compatibility with the agrochemicals commonly used in sugarcane crops. For this purpose, the in vitro effect of 11 agrochemicals (fungicides, insecticides and herbicides) on the germination and insecticidal activity of Bv062 formulated conidia was evaluated. Initially, the EC and agrochemicals were adjusted to double the recommended concentration and mixed in a 1:1 ratio. The mixes were incubated for two hours, and the germination percentage was calculated. The conidia exposed to the agrochemicals were also purified and used for a bioassay against second instar larvae of D. saccharalis. The EC was compatible with the herbicides and insecticides, maintaining germination and efficacy higher than 80%. In contrast, EC was incompatible with all the fungicides evaluated. These results allow us to suggest recommendations for the application of the biopesticide based on B. bassiana Bv062 with insecticides and herbicides used in sugarcane crops, but it is not recommended to apply it simultaneously with fungicides such as benomyl and the triazole group. It is recommended to validate these results under field conditions.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an elastomeric urethane monomer (Exothane-24) in different concentrations on physicochemical properties, gap formation, and polymerization shrinkage stress of experimental resin composites. All experimental composites were prepared with 50 wt.% of Bis-GMA and 50 wt.% of TEGDMA, to which 0 wt.% (control), 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 30 wt.%, and 40 wt.% of Exothane-24 were added. Filler particles (65 wt.%) were then added to these resin matrixes. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS: n = 10), flexural strength (FS: n = 10), flexural modulus (FM: n = 10), hardness (H: n = 10), hardness reduction (HR: n = 10), degree of conversion (DC: n = 5), gap width (GW: n = 10), and polymerization shrinkage stress in Class I (SS-I: n = 10) and Class II (SS-II: n = 10) simulated configuration. All test data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05; β= 0.2). Exothane-24 in all concentrations decreased the H, HR, DC, GW, SS-I, and SS-II (p < 0.05) without affecting the UTS, and FS (p > 0.05). Reduction in FM was observed only in the Exothane 40% and 30% groups compared to the control (p < 0.05). Exothane-24 at concentrations 20% and 30% seems suitable since it reduced GW and polymerization SS without affecting the properties of the composite resins tested, except for H.
Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de um monômero elastomérico de uretano (Exothane-24) em diferentes concentrações em propriedades físico-químicas, formação de fenda e tensão de contração de polimerização de resinas compostas experimentais. Todos os compósitos experimentais foram preparados com 50% em peso de Bis-GMA e 50% em peso de TEGDMA, nos quais 0% (controle), 10%, 20%, 30% e 40% em peso de Exothane-24 foram adicionados. Partículas de carga (65% em peso) foram então adicionadas as matrizes resinosas. Resistência coesiva (RC: n = 10), resistência à flexão (RF: n = 10), módulo de flexão (MF: n = 10), dureza (D: n = 10), redução de dureza (RD: n = 10), grau de conversão (GC: n = 5), largura de fenda (LF: n = 10) e tensão de contração de polimerização em simulações de cavidades Classe I (TC-I: n = 10) e Classe II (TC-II: n = 10). Todos os dados do teste foram analisados usando one-way ANOVA e teste de Tukey (α = 0,05; β = 0,2). O Exothane-24 em todas as concentrações diminuiu a D, RD, GC, LF, TC-I e TC-II (p < 0,05) sem afetar o RC e RF (p > 0,05). A redução da MF foi observada apenas nos grupos Exothane 40% e 30% em relação ao controle (p < 0,05). O Exothane-24 nas concentrações de 20% e 30% pareceu ser adequado, pois reduziu LF e TC de polimerização sem afetar as propriedades das resinas compostas testadas, exceto para D.

Resumen Introducción: En 1994, Claudio Bassi relató un caso de tratamiento médico de la necrosis pancreática infec tada (NPI); luego desde 1996 se publicaron numerosos artículos de serie de casos con tratamiento solo con antibióticos con buenos resultados. Objetivos: Presentar nuestra experiencia en el manejo de la necrosis pancreática infectada con antibióticos (sin drenaje). Métodos: Revisamos retrospectivamente los pacientes con diagnóstico de NPI desde enero de 2018 a octubre del 2020, enfocándonos en aquellos casos que se trata ron de forma conservadora (soporte hidroelectrolítico, nutricional y antibióticos). El diagnóstico se realizó ob servando gas en el retroperitoneo por TC asociado o no a deterioro clínico del paciente con necrosis pancreática sin otro foco. No se realizó punción aspiración con aguja fina (PAAF). Resultados: Identificamos 25 pacientes con diag nóstico de NPI. Once fueron tratados de forma conser vadora. Según la clasificación de Atlanta, modificada en 2012, 3 casos fueron clasificados de forma grave y el resto moderadamente grave. Todos recibieron antibióticos al menos durante 3 semanas. Ninguno requirió nutrición parenteral. El promedio de estan cia hospitalaria fue de 38 días. Tres pacientes fueron readmitidos. A 8 se les realizó colecistectomía luego de haber resuelto el cuadro; los restantes ya estaban colecistectomizados. No hubo muertes en esta serie. Conclusiones: La NPI puede ser tratada de forma con servadora sin drenaje con buenos resultados en casos seleccionados.
Abstract Introduction: In 1994, Claudio Bassi reported a case of medical treatment for infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN); then since 1996 numerous articles of case series were published with treatment only with antibiotics with good outcomes. Objectives: To present our experience in the mana gement of patients with IPN with antibiotics (without drainage). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed cases with a diagnosis of IPN from January 2018 to October 2020, focusing on those cases that were treated conservatively (hydro-electrolyte, nutritional support and antibiotics). The diagnosis was made by observing gas in the re troperitoneum by CT or by clinical deterioration of the patient with pancreatic necrosis without another focus. Fine needle aspiration was not performed. Results: We identified 25 patients with a diagnosis of IPN; eleven were treated conservatively. According to Atlanta, modified in 2012, 3 were classified severely and the rest moderately severe. All received antibiotics for at least 3 weeks. None required parenteral nutrition. The mean hospital stay was 38 days. Three patients were readmitted. 8 underwent cholecystectomy after having resolved the condition; the rest were already cholecys tectomized. There were no deaths in this series. Conclusions: IPN can be treated conservatively without drainage with good results in selected cases.

Abstract The spatial gradients created after the installation of large reservoirs produce a great diversity of biotopes, which affects the distribution and structuring of aquatic communities, mainly fish. Thus, we hypothesized that the fishes living in the lotic stretch (river zone, closest to the natural environment) of the reservoir would have lower overlap and higher niche breadth than fishes living in the lentic stretch. Samples were collected in six sections (lentic and lotic) of the Chavantes Reservoir, middle Paranapanema River. A total of 1478 individuals distributed in 13 species were sampled in both stretches. Many resources were acquired by species, and we observed that nine species present significant differences when comparing the two stretches. ABSTRACT CROPWAT is a model that uses water balance to study the water factor and productivity in production systems. In this sense, this study aimed to calibrate the CROPWAT for modeling rainfed and irrigated soybean production systems. Climate and soil data from a soybean-producing region in the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, were used to implementing simulations in nine agricultural years, and crop shortfalls were calculated and compared with reference data. Statistical indices were applied to evaluate the performance of the model in its calibration. For validation, two field trials with 12 cultivars were implemented under irrigation and rainfed and the mean productivity in each water management was compared with the CROPWAT estimate by Student’s t-test. Accuracy (r) was 0.976 (“very strong”), precision (r2) was equivalent to 95.3%, and the indices of agreement (d) and performance (c) were considered excellent (0.95 and 0.93, respectively) in the calibration. Abstract As a result of human activities and natural dispersal, exotic species can be brought to new areas, where they become established and spread, becoming invaders. These species are responsible for the loss of biodiversity and cause ecosystemic harm throughout the world. In this paper, we report the rapid, broad geographic expansion of the invasive fly Drosophila nasuta in Brazil. An 84% increase was found in its area of occupation in the country compared to previous studies. The present data reveal its arrival to the Pantanal wetlands in a location more than one thousand kilometers from the closest previous record in the Cerrado biome. We present the first record of D. nasuta in the Atlantic Forest in the states of Paraíba and Bahia. We report its introduction in the Amazon Forest in the state of Amazonas approximately 700 kilometers from previous records. The relative abundance of D. nasuta in this biome increased fivefold in comparison to a previous study. In the first decade of invasion in Brazil, D. nasuta has already colonized more than half of the country. The present data reveal its invasive potential and underscore the importance of following up the possible negative effects of this biological invasion.
