Abstract A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species. Resumo Uma lista de peixes recentes e fósseis da Ordem Characiformes é apresentada e acredita-se que a lista esteja completa até 2022. Ao todo, 47 colaboradores verificaram e forneceram informações sobre táxons de sua especialidade. A lista está organizada em ordem alfabética por família e em seguida gênero e inclui todos os sinônimos disponíveis. De um total de 3.087 nomes de grupos de espécies e 527 nomes de grupos de gêneros, 2.334 espécies são atualmente tratadas como válidas e atribuídas a 301 gêneros e 24 famílias. Este total inclui 25 espécies fósseis, das quais 21 são incluídas em oito famílias recentes e quatro são Incertae sedis em Characiformes, mas não inclui cinco espécies baseadas em fósseis que foram incorretamente consideradas como Characiformes. O status de 79 espécies nominais permanece não resolvido. Quando há duas hipóteses concorrentes sobre a validade de um nome, uma delas é escolhida e a interpretação alternativa é fornecida na seção de comentários do nome em questão. ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify factors associated with colonization by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) in adult patients admitted to a Brazilian hospital. This is a cross-sectional study, in which patients underwent a nasal swab and were asked about hygiene behavior, habits, and clinical history. Among the 702 patients, 180 (25.6%) had S. aureus and 21 (2.9%) MRSA. The factors associated with MRSA colonization were attending a gym (OR 4.71; 95% CI; 1.42 – 15.06), smoking habit in the last year (OR 2.37; 95% CI; 0.88 – 6.38), previous hospitalization (OR 2.18; CI 95%; 0.89 – 5.25), and shared personal hygiene items (OR 1.99; 95% CI; 0.71 – 5.55). At the time of admission, colonization by CA-MRSA isolates was higher than that found in the general population. This can be an important public health problem, already endemic in hospitals, whose factors such as those associated with habits (smoking cigarettes) and behaviors (team sports practice and activities in gyms) have been strongly highlighted. ABSTRACT The restoration of mangroves is crucial for preserving their vital role as ecosystems. Facilitation could assist in the restoration of degraded ecosystems, especially during the first life stages. This study investigated how herbaceous species can facilitate the recruitment and growth of Avicennia germinans in a degraded mangrove area undergoing restoration during extremely dry and rainy seasons typical of northeastern Brazil. The research assessed the densities and growth of A. germinans in the presence of Batis maritima and Sesuvium portulacastrum, and without any other plant species as control during the rainy and dry seasons from 2017 to 2019. The area had been previously disturbed by the salt pond industry abandoned since the late 1980s. The results revealed different facilitation mechanisms. S. portulacastrum and B. maritima promoted 2.6 and 1.7 times higher densities of A. germinans than control plots. While B. maritima had significantly faster growth of A. germinans than S. portulacastrum plots, associated with a capacity of decreasing salinity levels, facilitating mangrove seedlings during dry seasons, S. portulacastrum surpassed B. maritima and control plots in terms of density, which can be profitable for mangrove seedlings during extreme rainy seasons of floods. ecosystems stages Brazil A 201 2019 1980s s mechanisms S B 26 2 6 2. 17 1 7 1. levels density floods 20

ABSTRACT A comprehensive overview of Scarabaeoidea in Brazil is provided based on the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB). Data in CTFB include 2,532 valid species within 345 genera, belonging to 21 subfamilies and 10 families. Those have been described by 272 authors from 1758 to 2023. Among these authors, Carl Hermann Conrad Burmeister (1807-1892), George Frey (1902-1976), Friedrich Ohaus (1864-1946), Julius Moser (1863-1929), and Edgar von Harold (1830-1886) stand out as the most prolific, collectively accounting for approximately 43% of all known Brazilian species of Scarabaeoidea. For taxa occurring in Brazil, we also provide a dichotomous key for use identifying Scarabaeoidea families and subfamilies, along with diagnosis, remarks, and comments on their natural history. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Abstract Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests experience pronounced precipitation seasonality, intense solar radiation, and high temperatures, which often translate into high levels of deciduousness during the dry season. In these environments, deciduous species coexist with some evergreen species that are able to maintain their canopy leaves throughout the dry season. To understand the strategies behind this behavior, we analyzed leaf anatomical traits of 13 individuals of Sarcomphalus joazeiro during both the wet and dry seasons in a seasonal deciduous forest. We hypothesized that wet-season leaves would differ anatomically and functionally from dry-season leaves. Specifically, we expected wet-season leaves to show a more acquisitive resource-use strategy compared to dry-season leaves, which we expected to be more conservative. We assessed the effects of season and climatic variables on 25 leaf anatomical traits using generalized linear mixed models (LMM). Leaf traits varied between the wet and dry seasons and interacted with climatic variables, which together suggest that S. joazeiro produces season-specific leaf cohorts. Resumo As Florestas Tropicais Sazonalmente Secas apresentam sazonalidade pronunciada de precipitação, intensa radiação solar e altas temperaturas, que muitas vezes se traduzem em altos níveis de deciduidade durante a estação seca. Para entender as estratégias por trás desse comportamento, analisamos características anatômicas foliares de 13 indivíduos de Sarcomphalus joazeiro durante as estações chuvosa e seca em uma floresta estacional decídua. The 1,4-naphthoquinones are an important group of compounds intensively studied because of their wide range of biological activities. Four 2-chloro-3-(substituted-phenylamino)-1,4 naphthoquinone derivatives were synthesized, and the vibrational modes of these molecules were assigned using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. In addition, X-ray studies were performed for one of these derivatives. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also developed for these compounds and presented. ABSTRACT This review aims to provide current information about Q fever, elucidating the etiological, epidemiological, pathogenic, clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prophylactic aspects of the disease for the medical community. We discuss the main forms of presentation of the agent, its ability to persist in the body, the infinite possibilities of susceptible hosts, the main known forms of transmission, its importance in populations at occupational risk, and the role of arthropods in the natural history of the disease. Focusing on Brazil, we present the cases already described and studies developed since its first report, and how there is still much to unravel. We are aware of the possibilities of the persistence of the agent and the development of severe clinical pictures and the specific treatments currently instituted. We also wish to raise awareness about the future, the new genotypes that are emerging, the need to study the effects of vaccines, and the impact of Q fever on the population. Resumo O mitogenoma completo de quatro populações de Scleromystax barbatus coletadas ao longo da área de distribuição natural foi reconstruído, compreendendo o primeiro estudo com este gênero e o segundo com espécimes de Corydoradinae amostrados em seu ambiente natural e depositados em coleções permanentes. O mitogenoma de S. barbatus é uma molécula circular de 16.694 pares de bases (pb) compreendendo 37 genes, dos quais 22 são tRNA, dois são rRNA, 13 são genes codificadores de proteínas e uma região controle (D-loop). Uma sequência de inserção de 18 nucleotídeos foi encontrada entre a subunidade 6 da ATPase e os genes COIII. A maioria dos genes é codificada na fita pesada, enquanto o ND6 e oito tRNAs são encontrados na fita leve. Abstract The complete mitogenome of four Scleromystax barbatus populations distributed along the species natural range was reconstructed, comprising the first study with this genus and the second with Corydoradinae specimens sampled from their natural environment and deposited in permanent collections. The mitogenome of S. barbatus is a circular molecule of 16,694 base pairs (bp) comprising 37 genes, 22 of which are tRNA, two are rRNA, 13 are protein-coding genes and one control region (D-loop). An 18-nucleotide insertion sequence was found between the ATPase subunit 6 and COIII genes. Most genes are encoded on the heavy strand, while the ND6 and eight tRNAs are found on the light strand. Resumo Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo é correlacionar os resultados funcionais de uma série de casos de artroplastias parciais de recobrimento do ombro com o posicionamento do implante. Métodos Um total de 25 pacientes foram avaliados em relação à amplitude de movimentos, à avaliação funcional pelo escore de Universidade da Califórnia Los Angeles (UCLA) e por análise radiográfica. Os dados pré- e pós-operatórios foram comparados. Adicionalmente, os pacientes foram agrupados quanto ao ângulo cérvico-diafisário (ACD) avaliado na radiografia em anteroposterior e quanto ao ângulo de retroversão (ARV) avaliado na radiografia em posição axilar. Foi considerado como posicionamento ideal (padrão anatômico) um ACD entre 130° e 140° e um ARV entre 20° e 40°. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste pareado de Wilcoxon, pela análise de variância (ANOVA, na sigla em inglês) seguida pelo pós-teste de Kruskal-Wallis ou pelo teste de Mann-Whitney, quando apropriado. Resultados O seguimento médio foi de 48,3 meses (12 a 67 meses). A avaliação funcional pós-operatória (31,5) foi melhor do que a pré-operatória (15,5) (p < 0,001). Seis pacientes apresentaram posicionamento anatômico do implante, enquanto 19 pacientes foram considerados “fora do padrão.” Sete pacientes apresentaram um ACD < 130°, quatorze apresentaram um ACD entre 130° e 140°, e quatro apresentaram um ACD >140°. Quinze pacientes apresentaram um ARV ≤ 20°, e 10 entre 20° e 40°. Utilizando esses critérios para agrupar os pacientes, a comparação dos parâmetros da avaliação clínico-funcional pós-operatória não foi estatisticamente diferente (p > 0,05). Conclusão A artroplastia parcial de recobrimento do ombro oferece significativa recuperação funcional pós-operatória em pacientes com doenças degenerativas articulares. Entretanto, o posicionamento do implante avaliado pelos ACD e ARV não se correlaciona com o resultado clínico-funcional, sendo, portanto, uma medida imprecisa de sucesso da cirurgia. Abstract Objective The present study aimed to correlate functional outcomes and implant positioning in a case series of partial shoulder resurfacing arthroplasties. Methods A total of 25 patients were assessed for range of motion, functional outcome per the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score and radiographic findings. Preand postoperative data were compared. In addition, patients were grouped according to the cervical-diaphyseal angle (CDA) determined by an anteroposterior radiography and to the retroversion angle (RVA) determined by an axillary radiography. A CDA from 130° to 140° and a RVA from 20° to 40° consisted in ideal positioning (anatomical standard). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Kruskal-Wallis test or the Mann-Whitney test as appropriate. Results The mean follow-up time was 48.3 months (12 to 67 months). The postoperative functional score (31.5) was higher than the preoperative score (15.5) (p < 0.001). In 6 patients, the implant was in anatomical positioning, while implant positioning was considered “nonstandard” in 19 subjects. Seven patients had a CDA < 130°, and 14 patients had a CDA ranging from 130° to 140°; in addition, the CDA was > 140° in 4 subjects. The RVA was up to 20° in 15 patients and ranged from 20° to 40° in 10 subjects. Using these criteria to group patients, the postoperative clinical-functional parameters were not statistically different from the preoperative findings (p > 0.05). Conclusion Partial shoulder resurfacing results in significant postoperative functional recovery in patients with degenerative joint diseases. However, implant positioning assessed by CDA and RVA does not correlate with clinical-functional outcomes and, therefore, it is an inaccurate indicator of surgical success. ABSTRACT Introduction: Oral anticoagulants are the treatment of choice for diverse types of coagulation disorders. Warfarin is widely used by the Brazilian population, possibly due to its lower cost than other oral anticoagulants. However, it has a high risk of serious adverse effects if used incorrectly. The Anticoagulation Knowledge Tool (AKT) can assess a patient’s knowledge about her/his oral anticoagulant therapy and can assist health professionals in identifying patients with difficulties in adherence. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the AKT into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: After a standard forward-backward procedure to translate the AKT into Brazilian Portuguese (AKT-Br), a version of the instrument was applied in three groups (patients, pharmacists, and the general population). The reliability of the AKT-Br was tested using an internal consistency measure and test-retest. The validity of the instrument was confirmed with data from the contrasted groups. All statistical analyses were performed with RStudio. Results: The median scores obtained with the AKT-Br were 29.0, 17.0, and 7.5 for pharmacists, patients, and the general population, respectively (maximum score of 35 points). There was moderate internal consistency for the instrument and test-retest reliability was satisfactory. Analysis of variance for validity of the groups revealed a significant relationship between the total score and the evaluated groups. Conclusion: The ATK-Br is a reliable and valid tool to assess knowledge about oral anticoagulants. AKT-Br can be used in clinical practice as an auxiliary tool to improve patient care through personalised educational interventions.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW ON SINGLE-ATOM CATALYSIS: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS. Catalytic processes became extremely important for the development of our society, especially after the second industrial revolution. Thus, the research for more efficient catalysts is an obstacle to overcome to achieve cheaper processes, higher yields, and selectivity of desired products. In this context, single-atom catalysis emerges as a promising alternative to unite the advantages of traditional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Catalysis by single-atoms is a bridge that unites in a single catalyst the ease of recovery and reuse (from heterogeneous catalysis) with the high exposure and uniformity of sites (from homogeneous catalysis). Thus, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and single-atom alloys (SAAs) have already found several applications in the literature, such as in hydrogenation, oxidation, conversion of biomass derivatives, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. However, it is essential to emphasize that it is still a field that is expanding and relatively new, with several opportunities and many barriers to surpass. In this review, concepts of homogeneous, enzymatic, and heterogeneous catalysis will be addressed, as well as fundamental aspects of single-atom catalysis, preparation methods, characterization, and current challenges.

In this work, we report the synthesis of three series of carbohydrate-based benzo[f]indole-4,9-diones and amino-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives and evaluated their cytotoxic activity against eight human cancer cell lines. Several compounds showed a promising cytotoxic activity toward the tumor cell lines (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) < 10.0 μM). The importance of the substitution pattern of the quinone derivatives on the antitumor activity was also discussed. 3-Carboethoxy-2-methyl-benzo[f]indole-4,9-dione derivatives were more cytotoxic than their parent compounds and amino-1,4-naphthoquinones. Unlike clinically useful anticancer agent doxorubicin, the majority of synthesized compounds did not exhibit any lytic effects against erythrocytes or normal human leukocytes.
