This study presents a solution to solid waste problems, focusing on spent lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) and iron ore tailings (IOT) from the Mariana environmental accident in Brazil. The approach involves the production CoFe2O4 from LiBs and IOT, which serves as a catalyst for solar photo-Fenton reactions for methylene blue (MB) decolorization and as an electrochemical sensor for ascorbic acid (AA) detection. Chemical analysis showed recycling potential, with 45.22 ± 0.22% m m−1 Co from LiBs and 14.9 ± 1.5% m m−1 Fe from IOT, determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP OES) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The sol-gel synthesized CoFe2O4 exhibited a crystallite size of 51.9 ± 1.3 nm and agglomerated crystal clusters. Recycled-CoFe2O4 exhibited a 98.1% MB decolorization efficiency in 60 min under solar irradiation and remained above 92.3% in all 7 reuse cycles. The electrochemical sensor exhibited a coefficient of determination of 0.9987, a sensitivity of 3.352 ± 0.0428 μA mol L−1, and a limit of detection of 0.5511 µM in the concentration range of 1.96 to 23.08 mmol L−1 for AA detection. In this study, a mixed oxide (SiO2/ZnO/Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4) was prepared using the anode recycled from alkaline batteries and the silt fraction of mining tailings and applied as a photocatalyst under solar irradiation and as a pseudocapacitor. The structure and morphology of the mixed oxide revealed clusters of nanometric particles with rhombic and octahedral shapes. A 23 full factorial design was performed to determine the effect of pH, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and photocatalyst on methylene blue (MB) decolorization. The maximum efficiency was 96%, obtained using 2.35 × 10-5 mol H2O2 and 20 mg of photocatalyst at pH 3 for 30 min under solar irradiation. This efficiency remained even after four successive decolorization cycles. Pseudocapacitive properties showed that the mixed oxide exhibited favorable characteristics for application as electrochemical pseudocapacitors due to its high capacitance (87.16 F g-1), energy density (27.24 Wh kg-1) at 524.41 W kg-1 of power density, and reversibility (93%). ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The extraction and processing of ornamental rocks generate a very significant amount of waste, representing an environmental and public health problem. The residue is a fine-grained compound by rock powder and inputs used in the processing process have a potential economic value. The present study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of the waste generated in the discoloration of an aqueous solution containing methylene blue dye, such as alternative for treating textile effluents. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of the samples were evaluated in the Fenton and photo Fenton reactions at pH 3 and natural pH. The best decolorization efficiency (≈ 95%) was achieved using the GRM catalyst at pH 3, after 5 min of photo Fenton reaction. Importantly, owing to its excellent structural and chemical stability, the samples showed a decolorization efficiency above 95% after 5 consecutive cycles of 30 min of reaction. The correlation between iron distribution in octahedral or tetrahedral sites in synthetic magnetite and zinc spinel ferrites and their catalytic properties were investigated in this work. The zinc-doped nanomagnetites were prepared by co-precipitation method and annealed at 420 °C. X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis, X-ray absorption and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopies were used to identify iron sites. The obtained results showed that ZnII replaces the relatively smaller FeIII cation in the tetrahedral sites, increasing the cubic lattice dimension, and this replacement remarkably enhances the catalytic effectiveness of the Zn-spinel ferrite towards the indigo carmine degradation compared to undoped magnetite. The indigo carmine degradation experiments were carried out using photo-Fenton method in which 50 mL of indigo carmine dye aqueous solutions (20 mg L−1, pH 3.0), 20 mg ZnxFe(3-x)O4, and 2.0 mL H2O2 (aqueous solution at 0.028 mol L−1) were placed under UV light at 25 °C. Under these experimental conditions the degradation rate of indigo carmine was superior to 98%.

Abstract Background: Patients using immunosuppressive drugs may have unfavorable results after infections. However, there is a lack of information regarding COVID 19 in these patients, especially in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors associated with COVID 19 hospitalizations in patients with RA. Methods: This multicenter, prospective cohort study is within the ReumaCoV Brazil registry and included 489 patients with RA. In this context, 269 patients who tested positive for COVID 19 were compared to 220 patients who tested negative for COVID 19 (control group). All patient data were collected from the Research Electronic Data Capture database. Results: The participants were predominantly female (90.6%) with a mean age of 53 ±12 years. Of the patients with COVID 19, 54 (20.1%) required hospitalization. After multiple adjustments, the final regression model showed that heart disease (OR =4.61, 95% CI 1.06–20.02. P < 0.001) and current use of glucocorticoids (OR =20.66, 95% CI 3.09–138. P < 0.002) were the risk factors associated with hospitalization. In addition, anosmia was associated with a lower chance of hospitalization (OR =0.26; 95% CI 0.10–0.67, P < 0.005). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that heart disease and the use of glucocorticoids were associated with a higher number of hospital admissions for COVID 19 in patients with RA. RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever as práticas de ressuscitação volêmica em unidades de terapia intensiva brasileiras e compará-las com as de outros países participantes do estudo Fluid-TRIPS. Métodos: Este foi um estudo observacional transversal, prospectivo e internacional, de uma amostra de conveniência de unidades de terapia intensiva de 27 países (inclusive o Brasil), com utilização da base de dados Fluid-TRIPS compilada em 2014. Descrevemos os padrões de ressuscitação volêmica utilizados no Brasil em comparação com os de outros países e identificamos os fatores associados com a escolha dos fluidos. Resultados: No dia do estudo, foram incluídos 3.214 pacientes do Brasil e 3.493 pacientes de outros países, dos quais, respectivamente, 16,1% e 26,8% (p < 0,001) receberam fluidos. A principal indicação para ressuscitação volêmica foi comprometimento da perfusão e/ou baixo débito cardíaco (Brasil 71,7% versus outros países 56,4%; p < 0,001). No Brasil, a percentagem de pacientes que receberam soluções cristaloides foi mais elevada (97,7% versus 76,8%; p < 0,001), e solução de cloreto de sódio a 0,9% foi o cristaloide mais comumente utilizado (62,5% versus 27,1%; p < 0,001). A análise multivariada sugeriu que os níveis de albumina se associaram com o uso tanto de cristaloides quanto de coloides, enquanto o tipo de prescritor dos fluidos se associou apenas com o uso de cristaloides. Conclusão: Nossos resultados sugerem que cristaloides são usados mais frequentemente do que coloides para ressuscitação no Brasil, e essa discrepância, em termos de frequências, é mais elevada do que em outros países. A solução de cloreto de sódio 0,9% foi o cristaloide mais frequentemente prescrito. Os níveis de albumina sérica e o tipo de prescritor de fluidos foram os fatores associados com a escolha de cristaloides ou coloides para a prescrição de fluidos.
Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Adubação fosfatada na produtividade e qualidade de raízes tuberosas de cultivares de mandioca na savana amazônica, Brasil

RESUMO A produtividade de mandioca no Brasil, em 2019, foi de 18 t ha-1, muito aquém do seu potencial. O fósforo é um nutriente determinante da produtividade e encontra-se em níveis muito baixos em solos tropicais. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar doses de fósforo na produtividade e qualidade de raízes tuberosas de cultivares de mandioca na savana amazônica. O experimento foi instalado no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com 4 repetições. Nas parcelas foram aleatorizadas cinco doses de fósforo (0, 45, 90, 180 e 360 kg ha-1 de P2O5) e nas subparcelas duas cultivares de mandioca (Aciolina e Amazonas). Aos 12 meses de cultivo, as raízes tuberosas foram colhidas e avaliadas. O teor de ácido cianídrico não foi influenciado pelos fatores em estudo. O índice de colheita foi dependente, apenas, das cultivares, sendo superior na cv. Amazonas. A cv. Amazonas foi mais produtiva (86 t ha-1), porém, menos eficiente na utilização do P. A produtividade das cultivares Aciolina e Amazonas foram incrementadas em 125 e 82%, até as doses de máxima eficiência técnica de 192 e 208 kg ha-1 de P2O5, respectivamente. Portanto, a adubação fosfatada é uma boa opção para o cultivo da mandioca.
ABSTRACT In 2019, cassava productivity in Brazil was 18 t ha-1, well below its potential. Phosphorus is a nutrient that determines productivity and is found at very low levels in tropical soils. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate phosphorus doses in the yield and quality of tuberous roots of cassava cultivars in the Amazonian savanna. The experiment was installed in a randomized block design, in a split-plot scheme, with 4 replications. In the plots, five doses of phosphorus were randomized: 0, 45, 90, 180 and 360 kg ha-1 de P2O5 and in the subplots two cultivars (Aciolina and Amazonas). At 12 months the plants were harvested and the effect of treatments was evaluated. The HCN content was not influenced by the factors under study. The CI was dependent only on the cultivars, being higher in cv. Amazonas. The cv. Amazonas was more productive (86 t ha-1), but less efficient in the use of P. The productivity of the cultivars Aciolina and Amazonas were increased by 125 and 82%, up to the doses of maximum technical efficiency of 192 and 208 kg ha-1 de P2O5, respectively. Therefore, phosphate fertilization is a good option for the cultivation of cassava.
