The aim of this work was to extract and characterize pectin from lyophilized noni pulp (Morinda citrifolia Linn.) at three different pHs using different extractor agents and to evaluate anti-viral activity. The extraction of high yield (acid extraction) was subjected to sulfation procedure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magneticresonance analysis were used to calculate the degree of methylation of pectin from acid extraction and its sulfated derivative. The data obtained for the degree of methylation of noni pectin and sulfated pectin were 30.3 and 30.7, respectively. Pectin was subjected to acute oral toxicity testing in mice. The results showed that pectin had a pro-inflammatory effect, and sulfated pectin had an anti-inflammatory effect. Both pectins were also evaluated for herpes simplex virus activity in vitro, and although they successfully inhibited virus replication, the sulfated pectins were cytotoxic. Morinda Linn. Phytochemical study of Psychotria schlechtendaliana (Rubiaceae) aerial parts resulted in the isolation of alkaloids 4 N oxide harmane (1) and strictosidinic acid (2), and the terpenoids sitosterol, estigmasterol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin and betulinic acid. The crude extract (CE), its fractions (hexane FH, chloroform FC, ethyl acetate FEA, hydromethanolic FHM, alkaloidal chloroform FCOH, alkaloidal aqueous FAq) and majority alkaloid (1) were investigated for their antiproliferative potential against nine human tumor cells lines and one non-tumoral human cell line (HaCat). CE, FH and FEA fractions exhibited strong growth inhibition for ovary cells (OVCAR-3, GI50 = 5.89; 1.36 and 6.59 μg mL-1, respectively) and FC, FH and FAq fractions showed potent activity on the growth of leukemia cell lines (K562, GI50 = 1.92; 7.23 and 8.81 μg mL-1, respectively). Compound 1 exhibited selective antiproliferative activity to breast cancer (MCF-7, GI50 = 32.7 μg mL-1) and was non-toxic to HaCat cells. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect, models of ear edema induced by croton oil and the enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) were used. FH and FC fractions exhibited anti-inflammatory effect and reduce ear edema compared to the control group. These fractions showed results superior to those exhibited by indomethacin (75.1%), FH (97.5%) and FC (95.5%) fractions. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT Cowpeas are of high socioeconomic importance in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, whereby the search for alternatives that offer increased productivity with financial returns has become an important challenge. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate and evaluate the economic indicators of cowpea production in 2015 and 2016 when applying drip irrigation to different depths. Irrigation treatments were based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc). The experiment was laid in a randomized complete blocks design with four treatments (0, 25, 50, and 100% ETc) and six replications. For economic analysis, the results were extrapolated to an area of one hectare. Productivity in 2015 was lower than that in 2016; however, in all treatments, it was always higher when plants were grown under adequate water supply. In both years, the total operating costs were higher under irrigation than under rainfed conditions. The 100% ETc treatment resulted in a greater number of cowpea bags (60 kg) produced and a higher gross revenue than the rainfed treatment by 17 bags ha-1, equivalent to 1,020 kg ha-1 (gross revenue US$ 711.48) and 16 bags ha-1, equivalent to 960 kg ha-1 (gross revenue US$ 867.12), in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Water deficit limited cowpea yield in both years but made cultivation economically unfeasible only in 2015. Brazil challenge Thus 201 depths ETc. . . Abstract The Antillean manatee occurs discontinuously from the state of Amapá to the state of Alagoas on the coast of Brazil. There is also evidence of reintroduced manatees using the coasts of Sergipe and Bahia, with a preference for calm shallow waters. This study characterized the home range areas of six rehabilitated manatees released in northeastern Brazil. The activities were conducted in the states of Paraíba, Sergipe, and Bahia. Type of environment, substrate, depth, aquatic vegetation, physicochemical variables of the water, presence of solid waste, human settlements, and watercraft were considered to characterize the areas. The results showed a manatee preference for sheltered areas. Resources were available in larger quantities in the dry season, and a reduction in the availability of food items was fund over the years. High overlap was found in the multivariate space of the individuals in terms of the characteristics of the habitats. The estuary of the Paraíba River and the coastal area of Cabedelo Beach in Paraíba showed the greatest amount of solid waste, human settlements, and watercraft. Released manatees exhibited a preference for sites shallower than two meters, with food resources and fresh water availability. Abstract Background A new agronomic management is used in sugarcane fields, due to the removal of part of the layer of straw on the soil surface for the cogeneration of energy, culminating in variable amounts of straw. Objective The objective was to evaluate the population dynamics of weeds in different scenarios of straw removal; to evaluate the weed control and selectivity of sugarcane; to determine the amount of sugarcane straw that must remain in the soil to facilitate weed control in a sugarcane crop. Methods The main treatments were the following straw amounts maintained on the soil surface: 0, 5, 10 and 15 Mg ha -1 . The secondary treatments were: application of sulfentrazone + tebuthiuron and without herbicide. The research was conducted for two years. Results The main weeds found were two morningglories, I. triloba and I. hederifolia . With the increase in the straw removed from the soil, the density and dry mass of the weeds rised. The control percentage was close to 100% and the sugarcane was selective for the herbicides used. For both crop years evaluated, the absence of straw and herbicides showed inferiority in sugarcane productivity. Conclusions The sugarcane straw removal for the energy cogeneration industry would be feasible with the removal of 5 Mg ha -1 of straw on soil surface, maintaining a layer of at least 10 Mg ha -1 . fields 0 1 - herbicide morningglories I rised 100 evaluated productivity

ABSTRACT This position statement was prepared to guide endocrinologists on the best approach to managing thyroid disorders during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The most frequent thyroid hormonal findings in patients with COVID-19, particularly in individuals with severe disease, are similar to those present in the non-thyroidal illness syndrome and require no intervention. Subacute thyroiditis has also been reported during COVID-19 infection. Diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism during the COVID-19 pandemic may follow usual practice; however, should avoid frequent laboratory tests in patients with previous controlled disease. Well-controlled hypo and hyperthyroidism are not associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 infection or severity. Newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism during the pandemic should be preferably treated with antithyroid drugs (ATDs), bearing in mind the possibility of rare side effects with these medications, particularly agranulocytosis, which requires immediate intervention. Definitive treatment of hyperthyroidism (radioiodine therapy or surgery) may be considered in those cases that protective protocols can be followed to avoid COVID-19 contamination or once the pandemic is over. In patients with moderate Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO) not at risk of visual loss, glucocorticoids at immunosuppressive doses should be avoided, while in those with severe GO without COVID-19 and at risk of vision loss, intravenous glucocorticoid is the therapeutic choice. Considering that most of the thyroid cancer cases are low risk and associated with an excellent prognosis, surgical procedures could and should be postponed safely during the pandemic period. Additionally, when indicated, radioiodine therapy could also be safely postponed as long as it is possible.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the sequential changes of hemodynamic and metabolic parameters in patients who underwent aorta no-touch off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB). Methods: Prospective study involving twenty-seven consecutive patients who underwent aorta no-touch OPCAB. The FloTrac/PreSep/Vigileo™ system (Edwards Lifesciences) was used to continuously record heart rate (HR), mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), central venous pressure (CVP), continuous cardiac index (FCI), stroke volume (SV), stroke volume variation (SVV), and central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2). The parameters were assessed 5 min before, during and 5 min after each anastomosis (left anterior descending [LAD], posterior descending [PD], obtuse marginal [OM] and diagonal [Dg]). Postoperative lactate was also evaluated. Results: There was no significant change in HR and MABP for all anastomoses, except for MABP during PD grafting (-10.1±2.7 mmHg, P=0.03). There was a significant decrease in ScvO2 only during PD and OM anastomoses (-9.4±0.4, P=0.03; -4.4±0.4, P=0.02; respectively). CVP drop after PD manipulation was strongly associated with a higher lactate during the first hours after surgery (r=-0.82; P=0.001). These hemodynamic changes were transient and entirely recovered after the heart was returned to its anatomical position. No significant differences were observed in FCI, SVV, or the systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) during all anastomoses, except for a drop in SVRI during PD grafting (-8.03±2.3, P=0.007). SV tended to decrease during the procedure in all territories, but with statistically significant drop only in PD and OM grafting (-10.4±1.2, P=0.02; -13.6±5.1, P=0.007; respectively). Conclusion: Heart displacement for performing aorta no-touch OPCAB is well tolerated, with transient and endurable hemodynamic variations.

The secondary metabolites of the aerial parts of Phyllanthus acuminatus Vahl (Phyllanthaceae) and the biological activity of one of them were characterized in this study. This chemical investigation led to isolation of two lignans, luclaricin (1), a new arylnaphtalene-typelignan, and justicidin B (2). The structures of isolated compounds were determined based on 1D and 2D-NMR, HRESIMS and IR. The cytotoxic activity of justicidin B was assessed against tumor cell lines (MCF-7, U251, NCI-ADR/RES, NCI-H460, OVCAR-3, HT29 and K562) and a non-tumor cell line (HaCat) using sulforhodamine B assay. Justicidin B showed strong cytotoxic activity against the tumor cell lines HT29, K562 and U251 with GI50 values of 2.28, 3.29 and 5.76 mol L-1, respectively.

Hydroxynaphthoquinones such as lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) have proven to be effective antifungal agents. These compounds were tested for antifungal activity against yeast standard and clinical strains by the broth microdilution method. Among the synthetic lawsone derivatives, 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)(pyrrolidin-1-yl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione, 2-hydroxy-3-(((4-nitrophenyl)amino)(phenyl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione and 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)((4-nitrophenyl)amino)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione showed high activity against Candida albicans ATCC 10231, with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) ranging from 20 to 330 and from 80 to 330 µg mL-1, respectively. Moreover, they also showed a mechanism of action on exogenous ergosterol. Therapeutic concentrations (CC50) of 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)(pyrrolidin-1-yl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione, 2-hydroxy-3-(((4-nitrophenyl)amino)(phenyl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione and 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)((4-nitrophenyl)amino)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione were 52.81, 52.58 and 85.94 µg mL-1, respectively, which can be considered moderate or low. In addition, docking studies showed that these compounds had similar binding energy to standard ketoconazole, which are recognized as the molecular target by van der Waals interactions. Furthermore, they are under Lipinski's rule of 5 with a druglikeness score better than ketoconazole and nystatin. These findings suggest that 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)(pyrrolidin-1-yl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione, 2-hydroxy-3-(((4-nitrophenyl)amino)(phenyl)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione and 2-hydroxy-3-((2-hydroxyphenyl)((4-nitrophenyl)amino)methyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione have potential as leading compounds against human fungal infections.

A series of β-carboline derivatives with amino or guanidinium were synthesized and evaluated in vitro against anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis and for antiproliferative activities against nine human cancer cell lines. The compounds 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethylamine) β-carboline (24.9 µg mL-1) and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethylamine) β-carboline (26.9 µg mL-1) were the most active against M. Tuberculosis (MTB). Compounds 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethylamine) β-carboline and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline, which had the same substituted groups, inhibited the growth of all human tumor cell lines with growth inhibitory activity (GI50) values from 1.37 to 9.20 mmol L-1. Also in this series, compounds 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline and 1-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline demonstrated significant activity against NCI/ADR cells. Among compounds with a terminal guanidine group, compounds 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethyl)guanidine β-carboline (27.8 µg mL-1) and 1-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethyl)guanidine β-carboline (37.4 µg mL-1) demonstrated the greatest activity against MTB. Additionally, compounds 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethyl)guanidine β-carboline (GI50 = 0.45 mmol L-1) effectively inhibited growth and was highly selective against NCI/ADR. The in silico study revealed that 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethylamine) β-carboline, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(ethylamine) β-carboline, 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline and 1-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-carboxamide(propylamine) β-carboline compounds follow the rules established by Lipinski, suggesting that this compound has no problems with oral bioavailability.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing phosphorus doses and different irrigation depths on a phosphorus content of leaf of coffee plants at the stage of first harvest. Coffee (Topázio MG-1190) orchard was planted in January 2010. The treatments were imposed after November 2011. An experimental design with randomized blocks arranged in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme with three replications was used. Treatments consisted of five irrigation depths, that corresponded to fractions (0.4; 0.7; 1.0; 1.3 and 1.6) of the depth based on the crop coefficient, and four phosphorus doses (0, 80, 240 and 720 kg ha-1). A drip irrigation system was used. The phosphate fertilizer used was monoammonium phosphate that was applied via fertigation in twelve equal split applications. Leaf phosphorus content was determined at the interval of two, four, six, eight, ten, and twelve months after the application of treatments. For both single application of phosphorus at planting, as in the application of increasing doses, applied by fertigation, it was observed that, in the first year of coffee harvest, leaf content of phosphorus in coffee plants increases with increasing water depth.

The only drugs approved for the treatment of Chagas disease, nifurtimox and benznidazole, present toxic side effects and limited efficacy in the chronic stage of the disease, which highlight the need for new drugs. Amongst the different molecular drug targets discovered in the parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase (TcTS) has been considered crucial in the recognition and invasion of host cells. Hence, we report the efficient synthesis and biological evaluation (TcTS inhibition and antitrypanosomal activities) of some galactose-containing triazol-arylsulfonamides via microwave-assisted Cu(I) 1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) based on azide benzenesulfonamides and a galactose-derived alkyne as precursors. Most of the compounds tested against TcTS showed moderate to weak inhibition (40%-15%), except one of the compounds (81%). Regarding the antitrypanosomal assay, some compounds [(IC50 70.9 µM) and (IC50 44.0 µM)] exhibited the most significant activities, although not as active as benznidazole (IC50 1.4 µM). Nevertheless, the cytotoxicity assessment showed that all compounds were not cytotoxic. In this preliminary work, we considered some compounds as lead scaffolds for further optimization.
