Abstract At school, the mathematical literacy initiated by the development of arithmetic skills in the four operations, and reading and writing skills, plays a fundamental role in children’s cognitive development and their socializing. The literature points to phonological and visuospatial working memory, number sense, and linguistic skills as some of the cognitive aspects that mediate arithmetic skills. The present study aimed to (1) characterize the performance in solving arithmetic operations and investigate whether this arithmetic performance is different between children with and without reading difficulties; (2) investigate whether the way of registering the resolution (written or mental) is associated with correct answers in this arithmetic operations; and finally, (3) verifying the association of this arithmetic performance with tests that assess number sense and phonological and visuospatial working memory. Participants were 131 students of elementary school with and without reading difficulties. The results indicate that these children have a deficit in arithmetic performance compared to what is expected by the curriculum of their respective school grades. This study also showed that both the performance in arithmetic and the number sense and working memory are lower in the group with reading difficulty. The way of registering the resolution was related to the correct answers only for the addition with 2 digits. Resumo Na escola, a alfabetização matemática, iniciada pelo desenvolvimento de habilidades aritméticas nas quatro operações, ao lado da leitura e escrita, constitui um papel de fundamental importância no desenvolvimento cognitivo da criança e na sua inserção na sociedade. Abstract Background Age is the most important risk factor for develop dementia, and the recommendation is that older adults are cognitively tested to detect impairment in the initial stage for adequate treatment. The demand for the care of these older adults is great, drawing attention to the need for rapid tests, with good accuracy and simple application to identify cognitive impairment. Objective To develop and validate the Brazilian Mini-Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination (M-ACE BR) as a short screening test for cognitive impairment in older adults. Methods The M-ACE BR was developed using the Mokken scaling analysis in 352 participants (cognitively unimpaired [CU] = 232, cognitive impairment no dementia [CIND] = 82; and dementia = 38) and validated in an independent sample of 117 participants (CU = 25; CIND = 88; and dementia = 4). Results The Mokken scaling analysis derived 9 items (spatial orientation, anterograde memory, retrograde memory, delayed recall, recognition [name and address], letter verbal fluency, repetition of 4 words, naming of 10 items, and comprehension) with a maximum score of 51 points and an average duration time of 7 minutes. The cut-off score ≤ 43/51 for CIND had a sensitivity of 59.09% and a specificity of 80%. For a screening test in which sensitivity is prioritized for further investigation, we suggest using a cutoff of ≤ 47 (sensitivity 85.23% and specificity 24%), maintaining a good positive predictive value (79.8%). Resumo Antecedentes A idade é o fator de risco mais importante para o desenvolvimento de demência, e a recomendação é que os idosos sejam testados cognitivamente para detectar comprometimento na fase inicial para o tratamento adequado. A demanda pelo atendimento desses idosos é grande, chamando atenção para a necessidade de testes rápidos, com boa acurácia e de simples aplicação para identificar o comprometimento cognitivo. Objetivo Desenvolver e validar a versão brasileira do Mini-Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (M-ACE BR) como um teste rápido para rastreio de comprometimento cognitivo em idosos. Abstract In two experiments, a language decision task, and a multiple-choice English-Portuguese translation task, we examined the effect of interlingual homographs and word frequency on lexical access of Brazilian-Portuguese - English bilinguals. Language choice, accuracy, and response times were registered by the PsyToolkit software, and linear mixed-effects models were used in the analysis of the data. Zusammenfassung Zweisprachige und mehrsprachige Menschen stoßen in ihren verschiedenen Sprachen häufig auf Wörter, die einige linguistische Aspekte gemeinsam haben. Dazu gehören interlingualen Homographen, d.h. Wörter, die sich in zwei unterschiedlichen Sprachen durch genau dieselbe Orthographie auszeichnen. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde anhand einer semantischen Beurteilungsaufgabe in Englisch mit ERP-Aufzeichnung untersucht, wie mehrsprachige Personen (Sprecher des brasilianischen Portugiesisch, des Englischen und des Deutschen) im Vergleich zu einer Kontrollgruppe von brasilianischen Portugiesisch-Englisch-Zweisprachigen auf die Bedeutung von interlingualen Homographen zugreifen, die zu ihrer dominanten und nicht-dominanten Fremdsprache gehören. Abstract Bilinguals and multilinguals commonly encounter words in their multiple languages which share some linguistic aspects. Among those are interlingual homographs, or words that have the exact same orthography in two different languages. The current study examined, through a semantic judgment task in English with ERP recording, how multilinguals (speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, English and German) accessed the meanings of interlingual homographs that belonged to their dominant and non-dominant foreign languages compared to a control group of Brazilian Portuguese-English bilinguals. The findings demonstrated that multilinguals were slower to respond to the English-German interlingual homographs as compared to control stimuli (no homographs). The results also demonstrated that, when the interlingual homographs were semantically related to their targets in the non-target language, there were significantly more errors and a higher RT than in unrelated conditions. Additionally, only the bilinguals presented the typical N400 effect for unrelated conditions, suggesting that the co-activation of the non-target language due to interlingual homographs modulated this ERP in the multilingual group. ABSTRACT Purpose Evaluate the performance in the Semantic and Phonemic Verbal Fluency tests in relation to the cognitive components of clustering and switching and explore the changes in development in elementary school. Methods Participants were 68 children from the 2nd to 5th grade of elementary school of a public school in the municipality of Santo André, divided into two groups, Learning Difficulty (LD) and Typical Development (TD). Results The Verbal Fluency tests were compared for the number of clusters, mean size of the clusters, and number of switches. All variables compared showed a statistically significant higher score for Semantic Verbal Fluency. Means and standard deviations of the same variables for year and group effect were realized in both Verbal Fluency tests. A statistically significant difference was observed only for the total number of clusters in the Semantic Verbal Fluency test for group effect, with the best performance of the TD group. A high correlation was observed between the total number of correct answers with the total number of clusters and number of switches in both Verbal Fluency tests. In addition, a correlation was observed between the total number of correct answers and the mean size of the clusters only in the Phonemic Verbal Fluency. Linear regression analysis showed greater variance for the total number of clusters, making it more predictable for performance in both verbal fluency tests. RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar o desempenho nos testes de Fluência Verbal Semântica e Fonêmica em relação aos componentes cognitivos de clustering e switching e explorar as mudanças no desenvolvimento no ensino fundamental. Método Participaram 68 crianças do 2º ao 5º ano do ensino fundamental I de uma escola pública do município de Santo André, divididas em dois grupos, Dificuldade de Aprendizagem (DA) e Desenvolvimento Típico (DT). Resultados Os testes de Fluência Verbal foram comparados para o número de clusters, tamanho médio dos clusters e número de switches. Todas as variáveis comparadas mostraram uma pontuação estatisticamente significante maior para o teste de Fluência Verbal Semântica. Foram realizadas as médias e desvios-padrão das mesmas variáveis para efeito de ano e grupo em ambos os testes. Foi observada diferença estatisticamente significante apenas para o número total de clusters no teste de Fluência Verbal Semântica para efeito de grupo, com o melhor desempenho do grupo DT. Observou-se correlação alta no total de acertos em ambos os testes de Fluência Verbal com o número total de clusters e número de switches. Além disso, foi observada correlação entre o total de acertos com a média de tamanho dos clusters apenas no teste de Fluência Verbal Fonêmica. RESUMO A “demência frontotemporal” (DFT) é uma síndrome clínica, cujo denominador comum é o acometimento focal dos lobos frontais e/ou temporais. A DFT tem três fenótipos clínicos distintos: a variante comportamental e dois subtipos linguísticos, a saber, a afasia progressiva primária não-fluente/agramática (APP-NF/A) e a afasia progressiva primária semântica (APP-S). A DFT é a segunda causa mais comum de demência em indivíduos com idade inferior a 65 anos, após a doença de Alzheimer. O presente artigo apresenta recomendações para diagnóstico da DFT no cenário brasileiro, considerando os três níveis de complexidade do sistema de saúde: atenção primária à saúde e níveis secundários. São propostos protocolos de investigação diagnóstica abrangendo testagem cognitiva, avaliação comportamental, avaliação fonoaudiológica, exames laboratoriais e de neuroimagem.

ABSTRACT “Frontotemporal dementia” (FTD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the focal involvement of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. FTD has three clinical phenotypes: the behavioral variant and two linguistic subtypes, namely, non-fluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (PPA-NF/A) and semantic PPA (PPA-S). FTD is the second most common cause of dementia in individuals under the age of 65 years. This article presents recommendations for the diagnosis of FTD in the Brazilian scenario, considering the three levels of complexity of the health system: primary health care, secondary and tertiary levels. Diagnostic guidelines are proposed, including cognitive testing, behavioral and language assessments, laboratory tests, and neuroimaging.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar e caracterizar o comportamento oculomotor durante a leitura de pseudopalavras e palavras do português brasileiro caracterizadas quanto à frequência, extensão e regularidade e verificar sua relação com o desempenho em testes neuropsicológicos. Método 21 alunos universitários com média de idade de 20,9 anos realizaram a Tarefa de Leitura de Palavras e Pseudopalavras (TLPP) da Bateria Anele, além de testes de fluência verbal e de memória operacional fonológica. Foram estudados os padrões de duração da primeira fixação do olhar no estímulo, duração total das fixações no estímulo e a taxa de refixações (taxa de retornos ao estímulo). Resultados A duração da primeira fixação e a duração total das fixações foram significativamente menores para palavras em relação às pseudopalavras, bem como a duração total das fixações foi menor para palavras frequentes e curtas. Também foram encontradas interações significativas entre o desempenho na fluência verbal e a duração da primeira fixação. Conclusão Nossos resultados demonstram a aplicabilidade do rastreador ocular para avaliar a leitura no nível da palavra no Português Brasileiro. O rastreador ocular pode ser um instrumento adicional na investigação de transtornos de leitura do desenvolvimento e adquiridos, podendo auxiliar na detecção de dificuldades de leitura a partir da análise de diferenças do comportamento oculomotor entre leitores fluentes e não-fluentes.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate and characterize the oculomotor behavior during the reading of words and pseudowords in Brazilian Portuguese organized by frequency, length and regularity and verify its association with performance on neuropsychological tests. Methods 21 university students, with a mean age of 20.9 years, were submitted to a word and pseudoword reading task (TLPP) from the Anele Battery, in addition to verbal fluency and phonological working memory tests. The patterns of first fixation duration, gaze duration and rate of refixation were studied. Results The first fixation duration and the gaze duration were significantly lower for words if compared to pseudowords and the gaze duration was also lower for high-frequency and short words. Significant interactions were also found between verbal fluency performance and the first fixation duration. Conclusion Our results demonstrate the applicability of eye tracking to study reading patterns at the word-level in Brazilian Portuguese. The eye tracker can be an additional tool in the investigation of acquired and developmental reading disorders and can assist in the detection of reading difficulties based on comparisons of the oculomotor behavior between fluent and non-fluent readers.

Resumo O fenômeno do bilinguismo é a premissa essencial da tradução. Este trabalho apresenta modelos cognitivos contemporâneos que explicam o acesso lexical de bilíngues e multilíngues para o reconhecimento de palavras escritas, a partir de experimentos com homógrafos interlinguais. São abordados os trabalhos sobre conflito entre duas ou mais línguas,e como seus achados convergem para a hipótese de acesso não-seletivo ao léxico, o que elucida o impacto do bilinguismo nos processos de leitura e tradução. Como objetivo secundário, e a partir de uma perspectiva neurocientífica, também descrevemos as mudanças no cérebro e nos processos mentais decorrentes à experiência do bilinguismo e do multilinguismo. Os estudos mostram vantagens nas funções executivas (atualização, inibição e flexibilidade mental) e mudanças estruturais e funcionais em circuitos, especialmente envolvendo os córtices pré-frontais bilateralmente. Estas mudanças têm sido apontadas como fatores importantes de proteção (reserva cognitiva e cerebral) frente a diferentes situações de perdaneural.

Abstract The phenomenon of bilingualism is the essential premise for translation. This paper presents contemporary cognitive models for written word recognition, based on previous experimental work with interlingual homographs. We will discuss studies on language conflict between two or more languages, and how these findings provide support for the language non-selective hypothesis for lexical access, which elucidates the impact of bilingualism in the processes of reading and translation. As a secondary goal and with a neuroscientific perspective, we will also describe the changes in the brain and mental processes that underlie the experience of bilingualism and multilingualism. Studies discussed here demonstrate an advantage in executive function (updating, inhibition and mental flexibility) as well as structural and functional changes in circuits, especially involving the prefrontal cortices bilaterally. These changes have been indicated as important protective factors in different situations of neural loss.

A depressão é um problema importante e crescente de saúde pública. É muito comum ser encontrada uma relação significativa entre depressão e a presença de distúrbios cognitivos nos estudos populacionais. Objetivo: Estabelecer a correlação entre a Escala Analógica Visual de Felicidade e a Escala Cornell de Depressão em Demência na população de 60 anos ou mais da cidade de Tremembé, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Métodos: Estudo epidemiológico no qual foram realizadas visitas domiciliares na cidade de Tremembé. A amostra foi aleatória, através do sorteio de 20% da população acima de 60 anos de cada setor censitário do município. Este estudo foi de fase única, tendo sido realizada anamnese, exames físico e neurológico, avaliação cognitiva e aplicação de escalas Cornell de Depressão em Demência e Escala Analógica de Felicidade para verificar a presença de sintomas depressivos. Foi adotado como critério da presença de sintomas depressivos, pontuação maior ou igual a 8 na escala de Cornell. Resultados: Foram avaliadas 623 pessoas e destas 251 (40,3%) apresentaram sintomas depressivos significativos clinicamente na escala de Cornell, com associação significativa com gênero feminino (p<0,001) e com a baixa escolaridade (p=0,012). Cento e trinta e seis participantes (21,8%) apontaram para faces de infelicidade, com associação significativa com idade (p<0,001), com gênero feminino (p=0,020) e com baixo nível socioeconômico (p=0,012). Embora tenha havido significância estatística no teste de correlação, a correlação entre as duas escalas analisadas não foi alta (rho=0,47). Conclusão: A prevalência de sintomas depressivos foi elevada nesta amostra e a Escala Analógica de Felicidade e a Escala Cornell de Depressão em Demência não devem ser utilizadas como alternativas similares para avaliar a presença de sintomas depressivos, pelo menos em populações com baixa escolaridade.

Depression is a major growing public health problem. Many population studies have found a significant relationship between depression and the presence of cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To establish the correlation between the Visual Analogue Scale of Happiness and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia in the population aged 60 years or over in the city of Tremembé, state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: An epidemiological survey involving home visits was carried out in the city of Tremembé. The sample was randomly selected by drawing 20% of the population aged 60 years or older from each of the city's census sectors. In this single-phase study, the assessment included clinical history, physical and neurological examination, cognitive evaluation, and application of both the Cornell Scale and the Analogue Scale of Happiness for psychiatric symptoms. The presence of depressive symptoms was defined as scores greater than or equal to 8 points on the Cornell Scale. RESULTS: A total of 623 subjects were evaluated and of these 251 (40.3%) had clinically significant depressive symptoms on the Cornell Scale, with a significant association with female gender (p<0.001) and with lower education (p=0.012). One hundred and thirty-six participants (21.8%) chose the unhappiness faces, with a significant association with age (p<0.001), female gender (p=0.020) and low socioeconomic status (p=0.012). Although there was a statistically significant association on the correlation test, the correlation was not high (rho=0.47). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was high in this sample and the Visual Analogue Scale of Happiness and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia should not be used as similar alternatives for evaluating the presence of depressive symptoms, at least in populations with low educational level.

A variante não fluente e agramática da Afasia Progressiva Primária (APPNF) caracteriza-se por redução da produção verbal com falhas para construir sentenças gramaticalmente corretas, envolvendo disfunções nos níveis sintático e morfológico da linguagem. É crescente o número de pesquisas sobre alternativas não farmacológicas enfocando a reabilitação de aspectos funcionais ou comprometimentos cognitivos específicos de cada variante das APP. Relatar um tratamento de curta-duração administrado a um paciente com APPNF enfocando a produção de sentenças. O paciente apresentava redução importante da fluência verbal, uso de palavras-chave, simplificação frasal e gramatical, além de anomia. Utilizando o método de aprendizado sem erros, foram estruturadas seis sessões para estimular a formação de frases no presente e no passado com a técnica de cloze.O paciente apresentou melhora restrita à estratégia, com 100% de acerto nas frases treinadas e generalização para as não-treinadas de estrutura sintática semelhante após o treinamento. Os resultados foram mantidos um mês após o tratamento.

The non-fluent and agrammatic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (NFPPA) is characterized by reduced verbal production with deficits in building grammatically correct sentences, involving dysfunctions in syntactic and morphological levels of language. There are a growing number of studies about non-pharmacological alternatives focusing on the rehabilitation of functional aspects or specific cognitive impairments of each variant of PPA. This study reports a short-term treatment administered to a patient with NFPPA focusing on the production of sentences. The patient had significant reduction in verbal fluency, use of keywords, phrasal and grammatical simplifying as well as anomia. Using the method of errorless learning, six sessions were structured to stimulate the formation of sentences in the present and past with the cloze technique. The patient had improvement restricted to the strategy, with 100% accuracy on the trained phrases and generalization to untrained similar syntactic structure after training. These results persisted one month after the treatment.

O objetivo deste artigo é descrever a evolução das avaliações de linguagem em pacientes com distúrbios neurológicos adquiridos durante um período de aproximadamente 45 anos, dos anos 1970 até os dias atuais, quando a interdisciplinaridade iniciou-se no Brasil na Neuropsicologia. Os relatos dos primeiros 20 anos foram baseados em memórias de professores de universidades que possuiam o curso de Fonoaudiologia e ministravam disciplinas de afasia. Após, procuramos mostrar as contribuições da Linguística, da Psicologia Cognitiva para a avaliação da linguagem, assim como dos critérios psicolinguísticos e psicométricos. Por fim, apresentamos o panorama atual das adaptações e criações de instrumentos validados e estandardizados a partir de busca nas bases Pubmed, Scopus e Lilacs. Nossos comentários finais salientam a diversidade dos métodos de avaliação e a tendência recente da avaliação da linguagem estar relacionada às novas tecnologias de imagem cerebral e a análises computacionais.

The objective of this paper was to describe the evolution of language assessments in patients with acquired neurological diseases over a period of around 45 years from 1970, when interdisciplinarity in Neuropsychology first began in Brazil, to the present day. The first twenty years of data was based on memories of Speech Pathology University Professors who were in charge of teaching aphasia. We then show the contributions of Linguistics, Cognitive Psychology, as well as Psycholinguistic and Psychometric criteria, to language evaluation. Finally, the current panorama of adaptations and creations of validated and standardized instruments is given, based on a search of the databases Pubmed, Scopus and Lilacs. Our closing remarks highlight the diversity in evaluation approaches and the recent tendency of language evaluations linked to new technologies such as brain imaging and computational analysis.

Processamento semântico verbal é uma parte relevante da avaliação linguístico-cognitiva e o KDT tem sido amplamente utilizado para tal finalidade, evidenciando diferenças clínicas entre pacientes com danos cerebrais. Para aumentar sua utilização, valores de referência são necessários, especialmente para populações com origens socioeconômicas e níveis de escolaridade heterogêneos.OBJETIVO:Analisar efeitos da escolaridade e idade no KDT em indivíduos cognitivamente intactosMÉTODOS:O KDT foi aplicado em 74 indivíduos saudáveis. Fatores sociodemográficos foram investigados por correlação e análises entre grupos. Valores de referência foram fornecidos por idade e escolaridade.RESULTADOS:O desempenho do KDT correlaciona-se significativamente à escolaridade (r=0.757, p<0.01), à idade (r=-0.496, p<0.01) e ao nível socioeconômico (r=0.418, p<0.01 ), variáveis que se mostraram intercorrelacionadas. Correlações com a escolaridade e idade permaneceram significativas quando controladas a idade e nível socioeconômico (r=0.530, p<0.01) e a escolaridade (r=- 0.305,<0.01), respectivamente. Com controle do parâmetro da escolaridade, não houve correlação significativa entre o nível socioeconômico e o KDT (p=0.164). As análises entre grupos não revelaram os efeitos da idade. Encontraram-se diferenças significativas no desempenho de acordo com escolaridade. Escores abaixo do percentil 25 (39/52 - indivíduos com até 8 anos de escolaridade e 47/52- indivíduos com 9 ou mais anos de escolaridade) são sugestivos de dificuldades no processamento semântico de ações, que devem ser melhor investigadas.Conclusão:O desempenho do KDT foi influenciado por idade e escolaridade, o que reflete a necessidade de se considerar estes fatores como covariantes e, na prática clínica, usar diferentes pontos de corte, considerando essas características demográficas.

Action semantics is a relevant part of cognitive-linguistic assessment and the "Kissing and Dancing Test" (KDT) has been used extensively for this purpose, evidencing clinical distinctions among brain-damaged patients. To enhance its use, reference values are necessary, especially for populations with heterogeneous educational levels and socioeconomic backgrounds.OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of schooling and age on the KDT in cognitively unimpaired individualMETHODS: The KDT was applied to seventy-four healthy subjects. Sociodemographic factors were investigated through correlational and between-group analyses. Reference values according to age and schooling were provided.RESULTSKDT performance correlated significantly with schooling (r=0.757, p<0.01), age (r=-0.496, p<0.01) and socioeconomic status (r=0.418 p<0.01) but these variables were intercorrelated. Correlation with schooling and age remained signifi when controlling for age and socioeconomic status (r=0.530, p<0.01), and for schooling (-0.305,<0.01), respectively. When controlling for schooling, correlation between socioeconomic status and KDT was not significant (p=0.164). Between-group analyses revealed no age effects. Significant differences were found in performance according to educational level. Scores below 39/52 and below 47/52 (percentile 25) for individuals with 8 or less years of schooling and for individuals with 9 or more years of schooling, respectively, seem suggestive of an impairment in Action Semantics Processing and shall be further investigatedCONCLUSION KDT performance was influenced both by age and schooling, indicating the need to consider these demographic features as covariates when analyzing performance on the test and to adjust cut-off scores according to these demographic characteristics in clinical practice.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se estudos sobre dificuldades léxico-semânticas de pacientes com doença de Parkinson (DP) confirmam o modelo da Cognição Incorporada. Este propõe que pacientes com DP terão mais dificuldade no processamento semântico de conceitos de ações (verbos de ação) do que de objetos estáticos. Também verificamos se estes estudos seguem os debates atuais da Neurociência, e especialmente o debate entre o Modelo Lexical e a Cognição Incorporada. Estudos recentes sobre as bases neurais da semântica de verbos coletados através de neuroimagem foram descritos e após, foram apresentados aqueles que focalizaram o processamento neural de verbos em pacientes com DP. Concluímos que ainda existem poucos estudos que verificaram adequadamente a teoria da Cognição Incorporada no contexto da DP, especialmente utilizando neuroimagem. Estas limitações mostram que ainda existe muito para ser investigado sobre dificuldades semânticas de verbos nestes pacientes, principalmente controlando variáveis psicolinguísticas e características semânticas inerentes dos verbos.

ABSTRACT The objective of the current review was to verify whether studies investigating lexical-semantic difficulties in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) support the Embodied Cognition model. Under this framework, it is predicted that patients with PD will have more difficulties in the semantic processing of action concepts (action verbs) than of motionless objects. We also verified how and whether these studies are following current debates of Neuroscience, particularly the debate between the Lexical and the Embodied Cognition models. Recent neuroimaging studies on the neural basis of the semantics of verbs were presented, as well as others that focused on the neural processing of verbs in PD. We concluded that few studies suitably verified the Embodied Cognition theory in the context of PD, especially using neuroimaging techniques. These limitations show there is much to investigate on the semantic difficulties with action verbs in these patients, where it is particularly important to control for psycholinguistic variables and the inherent semantic characteristics of verbs in future studies.

RESUMO Este estudo ofereceu uma revisão sistemática de intervenções não-farmacológicas aplicadas a pacientes com Afasia Progressiva Primária (APP) e suas variantes: Semântica (APPS), Não-fluente (APPNF) e Logopênica (APPL) com o objetivo de estabelecer recomendações baseadas em evidências para a prática clínica de reabilitação cognitiva para estes pacientes. Métodos: Conduziu-se busca por literatura, sem restrição de período, no PubMed e LILACS com as palavras-chave PPA (e variantes) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. Para desenvolver recomendações baseadas em evidências um comitê de pesquisadores identificou as questões relevantes para investigação e determinou o nível de evidência para cada estudo de acordo com critérios publicados (Cicerone et al., 2000). A evidência total para os tratamentos foi sumarizada e recomendações redigidas. Resultados: Foram encontrados artigos publicados de 1995 a 2013: 21 para APPS, 8 para APPNF, 3 para APPL e 8 para APP sem especificações. Trinta e cinco estudos foram classificados como Classe III, consistindo de resultados obtidos com um ou mais indivíduos e utilizando metodologia apropriada para estudo de casos. O nível de evidência de três intervenções funcionais não pôde ser estabelecido. Um estudo foi classificado como Classe II e consistiu de pesquisa caso-controle não-randomizada. Conclusão: Resultados positivos foram reportados em todos os trabalhos analisados mas, para serem recomendados, os tratamentos requerem investigação em relação a sua eficácia. Resultados da presente revisão permitiram recomendação de algumas intervenções como Opções Práticas. Ademais, apresentamos sugestões para futuros estudos de intervenção em APP.

ABSTRACT This study provided a systematic review on nonpharmacological interventions applied to patients diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) and its variants: Semantic (SPPA), Nonfluent (NFPPA) and Logopenic (LPPA) to establish evidence-based recommendations for the clinical practice of cognitive rehabilitation for these patients. Methods: A PubMed and LILACS literature search with no time restriction was conducted with the keywords PPA (and its variants) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. To develop its evidence-based recommendations, a research committee identified questions to be addressed and determined the level of evidence for each study according to published criteria (Cicerone et al., 2000). Overall evidence for treatments was summarized and recommendations were derived. Results: Our search retrieved articles published from 1995 to 2013: 21 for SPPA, 8 for NFPPA, 3 for LPPA and 8 for PPA with no specification. Thirty-five studies were rated as Class III, consisting of studies with results obtained from one or more single-cases and that used appropriate single-subject methods with adequate quantification and analysis of results. The level of evidence of three functional interventions could not be established. One study was rated as Class II and consisted of a nonrandomized case-control investigation. Conclusion: Positive results were reported in all reviewed studies. However, in order to be recommended, some investigation regarding the intervention efficacy was required. Results of the present review allows for recommendation of some nonpharmacological interventions for cognitive deficits following PPA as Practice Options. Suggestions for further studies on PPA interventions and future research are discussed.

RESUMO Entre os instrumentos dirigidos à avaliação da memória semântica, temos os testes Pirâmides e Palmeiras ( Pyramids and Palm Trees - PPT) e o Beijando e Dançando ( Kissing and Dancing - KDT), para os quais não existem referências de desempenho de população brasileira normal e patológica. Objetivo: [A] Estudar esses dois testes em amostra de indivíduos jovens, sadios brasileiros, residentes na cidade de São Paulo; [B] Aplicar os resultados na avaliação de dois casos diagnosticados no espectro da degeneração lobar frontotemporal. Métodos: Avaliamos 50 participantes normais (41 mulheres e 9 homens) com idade entre 20-63 anos e escolaridade entre 14-20 anos. Adicionalmente foram examinados dois sujeitos com diagnóstico de degeneração lobar frontotemporal: um com demência frontotemporal-variante comportamental e outro com demência semântica. Resultados: Não observamos efeitos de idade, gênero e escolaridade na performance dos indivíduos normais nos dois testes. Obtivemos os valores de 46 pontos no PPT e 47 no KDT como indicativos de risco de déficit em memória semântica. A análise dos dois casos mostrou dupla dissociação na determinação de associações entre substantivos e verbos. Embora os pacientes apresentassem escores rebaixados nos dois testes, o paciente com demência frontotemporal-variante comportamental obteve melhor desempenho no PPT quando comparado ao KDT e o paciente com demência semântica mostrou padrão inverso, com melhor desempenho no KDT. Conclusão: Os testes PPT e KDT são aplicáveis à população brasileira, com necessidade de mínimos ajustes. Foi possível obter valores representativos de desempenho de população sadia, assim como vislumbrar o emprego em avaliações cognitivas de memória semântica nas DLFT.

ABSTRACT Among the instruments to evaluate semantic memory, the Pyramids and Palm Trees (PPT) and the Kissing and Dancing (KDT) tests are widely used but none have a performance referential for cognitively normal and impaired Brazilian populations. Objective: [A] To study these two tests in a sample of young healthy Brazilian individuals living in São Paulo; [B] To apply the results to the evaluation of two cases diagnosed with frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Methods: We evaluated 50 normal participants (41 females and 9 males) aged between 20-63 years, with schooling level of 14-20 years. In addition, two individuals diagnosed with frontotemporal lobar degeneration were examined, one with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia and the other with semantic dementia. Results: On the two tests, no effects of age, gender and schooling on the performance of normal individuals were observed. According to the performance of the sample of controls, scores below 46 points on the PPT and below 47 on the KDT are suggestive of deficits in semantic memory. The analyses of both cases indicated double dissociation in establishing associations between nouns and action verbs. Although the two patients had low scores on both tests, the patient with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia performed better on the PPT compared to the KDT, while the patient with semantic dementia showed the reverse, performing better on the KDT. Conclusion: The PPT and KDT are suitable tests for use in the Brazilian population, with minimal need for adjustments. They are applicable tools both for cognitive assessment and research in semantic memory. In the present study, we obtained representative values of performance for cognitively unimpaired individuals and demonstrated the utility of these instruments for cognitive assessment of patients with FTLD.
