Abstract To date, hydroxyurea is the only effective and safe drug that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of individuals with Sickle cell disease. Twenty years of real-life experience has demonstrated that hydroxyurea reduces pain attacks, vaso-occlusive events, including acute chest syndrome, the number and duration of hospitalizations and the need for transfusion. The therapeutic success of hydroxyurea is directly linked to access to the drug, the dose used and adherence to treatment which, in part, is correlated to the availability of hydroxyurea. This consensus aims to reduce the number of mandatory exams needed to access the drug, prioritizing the requesting physician's report, without affecting patient safety. date disease reallife real life attacks vasoocclusive vaso occlusive events syndrome transfusion which part physicians physician s report safety

Abstract Introduction The Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) was developed to measure individual differences in social comparison orientation and has been widely used in research and various different settings. Objectives The aim of this study was to adapt the online version of the INCOM and to evaluate its psychometric parameters when applied to a Brazilian population of university students. Methods The procedures were divided into two steps: step 1 – cross-cultural adaptation and analysis of content validity, and step 2 – assessment of psychometric characteristics. Step 1 comprised the processes of translation, evaluation by an expert committee, evaluation by the target population, and back-translation. For step 2, 1,065 university students were recruited and then factor analysis, analysis of reliability, and analysis of validity based on external measures were performed. Results The adaptation process yielded satisfactory results, including good indicators of content validity. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-dimensional structure and adequate factor loadings, except for item 11, which was excluded from the final version. Additionally, the final version of the scale had adequate fit indices (χ2 = 148.45, degrees of freedom [df] = 26; p < 0.001; root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.06; comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.99; and Tucker-Lewis index [TLI] = 0.98). Evidence of reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.83) was observed and there were positive correlations with negative affect (r = 0.36) and negative correlations with positive affect and self-esteem (r = -0.15; r = -0.41, respectively). Conclusion The Brazilian version of the INCOM presents satisfactory psychometric parameters and can thus be used to measure social comparison orientation. Abstract The littoral zone is an essential compartment for lake biota because of its high productivity and diversity. Moreover, phytoplankton is expected to have non-equilibrium dynamics on it. The study’s aimed to explore phytoplankton in the littoral zone of a shallow lake over a short-term scale. Daily sampling was conducted for 25 consecutive summer days in 2016, at two marginal points of a continuously warm, polymictic, and oligo-mesotrophic subtropical lake (Lake Mangueira, Brazil). Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyta contributed 86% of total biomass. We observed high variability in phytoplankton structure, with species turnover over diel cycles. Redundancy analysis indicated spatial differentiation for phytoplankton structure in relation to abiotic conditions. Nutrient dynamics and humic substances were significant drivers for phytoplankton variability. Phytoplankton was positively correlated with SRP and negatively with humic substances. Our results showed a non- equilibrium state for the littoral phytoplankton of Lake Mangueira, given the high variability of abiotic conditions, even at short distances. Due to its high temporal and spatial variability, the littoralzone seems to contribute to the recruitment and maintenance of phytoplankton biodiversity in shallow lakes. Further studies should consider the functional attributes of species and the complex biological interactions of phytoplankton and macrophytes along the littoral zone. diversity Moreover nonequilibrium non it studys study s shortterm term scale 2 2016 warm polymictic oligomesotrophic oligo mesotrophic Mangueira Brazil. Abstract Background The escalation of surgeries for high-risk patients in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) lacks evidence on the positive impact of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and lacks universal criteria for allocation. This study explores the link between postoperative ICU allocation and mortality in high-risk patients within a LMIC. Additionally, it assesses the Ex-Care risk model's utility in guiding postoperative allocation decisions. Methods A secondary analysis was conducted in a cohort of high-risk surgical patients from a 800-bed university-affiliated teaching hospital in Southern Brazil (July 2017 to January 2020). Inclusion criteria encompassed 1431 inpatients with Ex-Care Model-assessed all-cause postoperative 30-day mortality risk exceeding 5%. The study compared 30-day mortality outcomes between those allocated to the ICU and the Postanesthetic Care Unit (PACU). Outcomes were also assessed based on Ex-Care risk model classes. Results Among 1431 high-risk patients, 250 (17.47%) were directed to the ICU, resulting in 28% in-hospital 30-day mortality, compared to 8.9% in the PACU. However, ICU allocation showed no independent effect on mortality (RR = 0.91; 95% CI 0.68‒1.20). Patients in the highest Ex-Care risk class (Class IV) exhibited a substantial association with mortality (RR = 2.11; 95% CI 1.54-2.90) and were more frequently admitted to the ICU (23.3% vs. 13.1%). Conclusion Patients in the highest Ex-Care risk class and those with complications faced elevated mortality risk, irrespective of allocation. Addressing the unmet need for adaptable postoperative care for high-risk patients outside the ICU is crucial in LMICs. Further research is essential to refine criteria and elucidate the utility of risk assessment tools like the Ex-Care model in assisting allocation decisions. highrisk high Low MiddleIncome Middle Income LMICs (LMICs (ICU LMIC Additionally ExCare Ex models s decisions 800bed bed 800 universityaffiliated university affiliated July 201 2020. 2020 . 2020) 143 Modelassessed Model allcause all cause 30day day 30 5 5% PACU (PACU) classes 25 17.47% 1747 17 47 (17.47% 28 inhospital 89 8 9 8.9 However RR 0.91 091 0 91 95 0.68‒1.20. 068120 0.68‒1.20 68 1 20 0.68‒1.20) Class IV 2.11 211 2 11 1.542.90 154290 1.54 2.90 54 90 1.54-2.90 23.3% 233 23 3 (23.3 vs 13.1%. 131 13.1% 13 13.1%) 80 202 14 (PACU 17.47 174 4 (17.47 8. 0.9 09 06812 0.68‒1.2 6 2.1 21 542 1.542.9 15429 154 1.5 290 2.9 1.54-2.9 23.3 (23. 13.1 17.4 (17.4 0. 0681 0.68‒1. 2. 1.542. 1542 15 1. 29 1.54-2. 23. ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify the progress of error typology and percentage of self-correction in text reading and their association with reading fluency in second/third graders (group 1) and fifth/sixth graders (group 2) and the influence of education level on the typology of errors and percentage of self-correction. Methods: an observational, analytical, and longitudinal study. Altogether, 41 students were assessed during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding text reading fluency, percentage of self-corrections and errors, and error typology. The Wilcoxon and paired t-tests were used to compare means, and Pearson’s and Spearman’s tests for correlations. The p-value was set at p < 0.05. Results: group 1 had a decrease in the percentage of errors and an increase, followed by a decrease, in self-corrections. Group 2 had an increase in the percentage of self-corrections, with no variation in errors. The association analysis revealed that the higher the reading speed, the lower the percentage of self-corrections. In the second assessment, group 1 had more self-corrections than group 2 and, in the third one, group 2 had more errors than group 1. Conclusion: the increase in reading fluency and the decrease in errors occur progressively - unlike self-correction, which varies throughout the school year. However, there is an inverse relationship between speed and self-correction. Purpose selfcorrection self correction secondthird fifthsixth fifth sixth selfcorrection. correction. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the modulatory properties of Calendula officinalis L. (Asteraceae) (C. officinalis) extract on cafeteria diet-fed rats. Methods: A cafeteria diet was administered ad libitum for 45 days to induce dyslipidemia. Then, the rats were treated with the formulations containing C. officinalis in the doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg or only with the vehicle formulation; the control group received a commercial ration. Results: The cafeteria diet decreased glutathione S-transferase activity and high-density lipoprotein plasmatic levels and damaged the hepatic architecture. The C. officinalis extract was able to reduce lipid infiltration in liver tissue and to modulate oxidative stress and lipid profile markers. Conclusions: The correlations between the variables suggest a pathological connection between oxidative stress markers and serum lipid profile. ABSTRACT Several aspects make nitrocellulose based powders adequate as a solid propellant for rockets and missiles and the prefe rable propellant to be used in firearms and artillery: it produces less smoke and less fouling than other propellants; its burning rate shows a well-defined relation to pressure and the composition of the gaseous mixture resulting from its decomposition by burning can be predicted with relatively high levels of accuracy. This last feature, if coupled with adequate thermodynamic models, leads to a reliable framework for the simulation of internal ballistics and, ultimately, to an efficient design. Some simpler models use an ideal gas approach, which is obviously not adequate, and some others perform corrections based on the Virial E quation of S tate for sake of algebraic simplicity. This work employs the Peng-Robinson equation of state to model the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) behavior of the gases produced during the burning reaction, once it is known to be accurate in the high pressures obtained inside combustion chambers. The results were compared to experimental data obtained in a closed vessel device and showed that the Peng-Robinson equation of state could predict the chamber pressure with higher accuracy. artillery propellants welldefined well defined accuracy feature ultimately design approach simplicity PengRobinson Peng Robinson pressurevolumetemperature volume temperature PVT (PVT reaction chambers

Resultados Ao todo, 162 estudantes participaram do estudo transversal. Abstract Background International studies performed during the periods of social isolation highlighted the potential loss of student's learning skills. The present study fills a gap in Brazilian research on this topic and focuses on the development of reading fluency. Objective To investigate the development of the reading fluency of students in the early years of elementary school during e-learning as a result of the social distancing measures put into effect due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods Students from grades 2 to 5 were recorded. The number of words read per minute and of those read correctly per minute were analyzed. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures with Bonferroni correction in the longitudinal study, and the t-test in the cross-sectional study. Results In the cross-sectional study, 162 students participated. Only the comparison between the 2nd grade classes of 2020 and 2021 showed a statistically significant difference. In the prepandemic classes, the students had better results in reading accuracy than the students assessed during the pandemic. The longitudinal study included 75 students, who improved in fluency rate and accuracy as expected between March and December 2020. In March 2021, the results showed a drop, which may be related to school closures during the Brazilian summer vacation. Conclusions The present research demonstrates the results of Brazilian students in terms of the development of reading fluency during the pandemic. There was an expressive development in grades 2 and 3, with stability in the following grades. The 2nd grade class of 2021 suffered a major impact due to the pandemic. student s skills elearning e 201 COVID19 COVID 19 (COVID-19 pandemic recorded analyzed ANOVA (ANOVA ttest t test crosssectional cross sectional 16 participated nd 202 difference 7 drop vacation 3 20 COVID1 1 (COVID-1 (COVID- (COVID

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The need to develop a vaccine against schistosomiasis led several researches and our group to investigate proteins from Schistosoma mansoni as vaccine candidates. Sm22.6 is a protein from S. mansoni that shows high identity with Sj22.6 and Sh22.6 (79 and 91%, respectively). These proteins are associated with high levels of IgE and protection to reinfection. Previously, we have shown that Sm22.6 induced a partial protection of 34.5% when used together with Freund's adjuvant and produced a Th0 type of immune response with interferon-g and interleukin-4. In this work, mice were immunized with Sm22.6 alone or with aluminum hydroxide adjuvant and high levels of IgG, IgG1, and IgG2a were measured. Unfortunately, no protection was detected. Since IL-10 is a modulating cytokine in schistosomiasis, we also observed a high level of this molecule in splenocytes of vaccinated mice. In conclusion, we did not observe the adjuvant effect of aluminum hydroxide associated with rSm22.6 in protective immunity.

Asthmatics infected with Schistosoma mansoni have a less severe course of asthma and an inhibition of the Th2 inflammatory response that seems to be mediated by interleukin (IL-10). The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of some S. mansoni antigens to stimulate IL-10 production in vitro by cells of asthmatic infected individuals. Peripheral bloods mononuclear cells were stimulated with the S. mansoni recombinant antigens Sm22.6, Sm14, P24, and PIII antigen. IL-10 was measured in the supernatants of cultures. As the recombinant antigens were cloned in Escherichia coli, we blocked contaminant endotoxin with polymyxin B added to the cultures. We demonstrated that all antigens used drove high production of IL-10 in S. mansoni infected individuals (n = 13, 408 ± 514 and 401 ± 383 pg/ml, 484 ± 245 pg/ml, 579 ± 468 pg/ml, respectively). In asthmatics infected with S. mansoni (n = 21) rP24 induced higher levels of IL-10 (565 ± 377 pg/ml) when compared to PIII, rSm14 and rSm22.6 (184 ± 209 pg/ml; 292 ± 243 pg/ml; 156 ± 247 pg/ml, respectively). Conclusion: the S. mansoni antigens evaluated in this study stimulated IL-10 production by cells from infected individuals and therefore they have the potential to be used as a modulator of the inflammatory response in asthma.
