ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. In this study, xiquexique (Pilosocereus gounellei) native endemic cactus from the Brazilian semiarid was used for the first time as a natural carbon source (“green precursor”) for the synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). These CDs were successfully used to develop a fast, low-cost, eco-friendly fluorescence method for the determination of tannins in teas. This method was automatized employing a flow-batch system coupled to an inexpensive ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) used as an excitation source and a cheap handheld spectrometer used as a detector. CDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The proposed method presented a linear range from 2.0-30.0 mg L-1, relative standard deviation (RSD) < 3.0%, limit of detection (LOD) = 0.102 mg L-1, and recovery rates from 90.5-109.1%. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and reference methods, revealing that it is a useful alternative for the determination of tannins. study Pilosocereus gounellei green precursor precursor” CDs. . RESUMO: Vitamina A é um micronutriente essencial para reprodução, desenvolvimento, crescimento normal, além de participar do funcionamento do sistema nervoso central e visão, especialmente em animais em crescimento. Hipovitaminose A pode afetar qualquer uma dessas funções. O objetivo desse artigo é descrever a epidemiologia, sinais clínicos, aspectos patológicos e abordagem diagnóstica em um surto de cegueira em bezerros confinados alimentados apenas com grãos. De 57 bezerros de dez meses de idade, cinco ficaram cegos após oito meses no confinamento. Os sinais clínicos eram midríase, ausência de reflexo pupilar a luz e de ameaça, bilateralmente. Suspeitou-se de hipovitaminose A, que foi subsequentemente confirmada pelos baixos níveis séricos de vitamina A. Um bezerro foi eutanasiado e necropsiado, e alterações macroscópicas não foram encontradas. Lesões histopatológicas estavam restritas a retina e caracterizavam-se por degeneração e atrofia da camada de fotorreceptores, além de cicatrizes na retina. Os bezerros foram tratados com injeção intramuscular de vitamina A, na dose de 5.000 unidades internacionais (UI) por quilograma de peso vivo (Kg PV) a cada 60 dias, até o dia do abate. Os bezerros afetados não recuperaram a capacidade visual, mas novos casos não ocorreram. ABSTRACT: Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient to reproduction, development, normal growth, and function of the nervous system and vision, especially in growing animals. Hypovitaminosis A can affect any of these functions. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology, clinical signs, pathological aspects, and diagnostic approach in an outbreak of blindness in feedlot calves fed only grain. Five of 57 ten-month-old calves became blind after eight months at the feedlot. Clinical signs were mydriasis, absent pupillary and menace reflexes, bilaterally. Hypovitaminosis A was suspected and subsequently confirmed by low serum levels of vitamin A. One calf was euthanized and necropsied, and no gross findings were present. Histopathological lesions were restricted to the retina and characterized by degeneration and atrophy of the photoreceptor layer and some retinal scars. The calves were treated with intramuscular vitamin A injection at a dose of 5,000 international units (IU) per kilogram of body weight (kg BW) every 60 days until slaughter. Affected calves did not recover visual capacity, but no other cases occurred. Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Abstract Although Três Lagoas municipality is located in a rare and highly fragmented Atlantic Forest-Cerrado ecotone, there is scarcity of biodiversity data to guide conservation decisions. Therefore, this study aimed to compile the first bird checklist in 31 localities in this municipality to propose conservation strategies based on avian richness, conservation and migratory status. A total of 419 bird species were recorded, of which 412 were exclusive to the Atlantic Forest-Cerrado ecotone and seven to the Cerrado domain (C. minor, L. xenopterus, P. unicinctus, T. curucui, S. pileata, S. melanopis and S. luteola). According to the results, 12 species are included in the Near Threatened category, four are vulnerable (C. fasciolata, L. xenopterus, A. tricolor and S. hypoxantha) and one is endangered (U. coronata). Regarding migratory birds, 112 were recorded (95 intracontinental, 17 intercontinental). Since the majority of these species are recorded in grasslands, aquatic habitats and Seasonal Deciduous Alluvial Forest, they necessarily have highest priority for conservation and restoration. Thus, we recommend that: (1) areas 2, 11 and 24 be considered as both Important Bird Area and “Area de Proteção Ambiental”; (2) riparian forest restoration along the Paraná river act as a local ecological corridor among these areas, allowing the recolonization, genetic exchange and restoration of locally reduced populations of migratory and near/threatened bird species. Resumo: Testes rápidos que permitam a avaliação do potencial fisiológico são parâmetros essenciais para programas de produção de sementes e mudas com qualidade. O objetivo do trabalho foi estabelecer parâmetros de um método de avaliação do vigor de sementes de espécies nativas por meio da análise da produção de etanol, medido com etilômetro modificado. Foram testados seis lotes de Myracrodruon urundeuva, para cada lote foram colocadas 1,0 g e 2,0 g de sementes embebidas durante duas, quatro, seis, oito e 24 horas. Testou-se sete lotes de Cenostigma pyramidale, e cinco lotes de Amburana cearensis, onde foram colocadas 20 sementes embebidas durante duas, quatro, seis, oito e 24 h. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada, também, pelos testes de germinação e condutividade elétrica. A utilização de 1,0 g de sementes embebidas em 0,5 mL de água e avaliação de etanol em seis horas distinguiu lotes de M. urundeuva quanto ao vigor. Para as sementes de C. pyramidale, e de A. cearensis, 20 sementes embebidas em 1,0 mL de água em seis horas se mostrou mais eficiente. O teste de etanol mostrou ser rápido e preciso, permitindo diferenciar os lotes, assim como os testes de germinação e condutividade elétrica.
Abstract: Rapid tests that allow the assessment of physiological potential are essential parameters for quality seed and seedling production programs. The aim of this work was to establish parameters of a method for evaluating the vigor of seeds of native species through the analysis of ethanol production, measured with a modified alcohol meter. Six lots of Myracrodruon urundeuva were tested, and for each lot 1.0 g and 2.0 g of seeds were soaked for two, four, six, eight and 24 hours. Seven lots of Cenostigma pyramidale and five lots of Amburana cearensis were tested, where 20 seeds were soaked for two, four, six, eight and 24 h. The physiological quality of the seeds was also evaluated by germination and electrical conductivity tests. The use of 1.0 g of seeds soaked in 0.5 mL of water and evaluation of ethanol at six hours distinguished lots of M. urundeuva in terms of vigor. For C. pyramidale and A. cearensis, 20 seeds soaked in 1.0 mL of water and ethanol evaluation at six hours proved to be more efficient. The ethanol test proved to be fast and accurate, allowing differentiation of lots, as well as germination and electrical conductivity tests.

RESUMO O risco de fratura ou tensao nos mini-parafusos é maior se o diámetro, comprimento, tipo de liga ou ángulo de insergao for selecionado de forma inadequada. Os objetivos deste estudo foram testar a resistencia estrutural de dois tipos de mini-aparafusos ortodónticos -um feito de ago inoxidável e outro de titànio- de uma marca internacional e avaliar a eficácia de dois outros mini-parafusos de titànio de origem brasileira, durante um procedimento de ancoragem extra-alveolar. Os mini-aparafusos analisados foram: Bomei ago inoxidável e Bomei titànio / Taiwan, Morelli titànio e Neodent titànio / Brasil. Foram realizadas experiencias em mandíbulas de porcos para simular o processo de ancoragem extra-alveolar. Foram utilizados dois processos de insergao (Direta a 30°, e Indireta, comegando a 60° e terminando a 30° com movimento gradual continuo). A deformagao foi avaliada utilizando Microscopia Optica e Microscopia Eletrónica de Varredura. Os dados foram avaliados utilizando análise estatistica nao paramétrica Kruskal-Wallis e testepost-hoc Tamhane. Diferengas estatisticas significativas na deformagao foram observadas entre os mini-parafusos utilizados nas insergoes extra-alveolares, tanto para os procedimentos diretos como indiretos. Nos testes de insergao indireta, tanto os mini-parafusos de ago inoxidável como os de titánio sofreram deformagao, mostrando que a angulagao pode ser um fator importante nas taxas de falha dos mini-parafusos. A mudanga no ángulo durante o movimento de insergao aumentou as taxas de deformagao independentemente do tipo de liga, aumentando o risco de falha. Estes resultados podem ajudar os ortodontistas na escolha de mini-parafusos para ancoragem extra-alveolar, que pode ser realizada com insergao direta ou indireta. Estudos in vivo devem ser conduzidos para confirmar os resultados deste estudo.
ABSTRACT The risk of fracture or strain in mini-screws is higher if diameter, length, type of alloy or insertion angle is selected inappropriately. The aims of this study were to test the structural resistance of two types of orthodontic mini-screws -one made of stainless steel and another of titanium- from an international brand and to evaluate the efficacy of two other titanium miniscrews of Brazilian origin, during an extra-alveolar anchorage procedure. The mini-screws analyzed were: Bomei stainless steel and Bomei titanium/Taiwan, Morelli titanium and Neodent titanium/ Brazil. Experiments were conducted on pig mandibles to simulate the process of extra-alveolar anchorage. Two insertion processes were used: Direct at 30°, and Indirect, starting at 60° and ending at 30° with gradual continuous movement. Strain was evaluated using Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Data were evaluated using Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric statistical analysis and post hoc Tamhane test. Significant statistical differences in strain were observed among the mini-screws used in the extra-alveolar insertions, both for the direct and indirect procedures. In the indirect insertion tests, both stainless steel and titanium mini-screws suffered deformation, showing that angling can be an important factor in mini-screw failure rates. The change in angle during the insertion movement increased deformation rates independently of alloy type, increasing the risk offailure. These results could help orthodontists in choosing mini-screws for extra-alveolar anchorage, which can be performed with direct or indirect insertion. In vivo studies should be conducted to confirm the findings of this study.

The objective of this work was to carry out a bibliographic survey of secondary metabolites isolated from the Velloziaceae family, creating a bank of compounds. After the bank was created, four prediction models for potentially active compounds against pathogenic microorganisms (Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp.) were obtained trying to identify which metabolites would be more active against the strains. Four sets of compounds with known activity for microorganisms were selected for the construction of predictive models from the CHEMBL database. Another bank with 163 unique molecules isolated from the Velloziaceae family was built. The Volsurf+ v.1.0.7 software obtained the molecular descriptors and Knime 3.5 generated the in silico model. The performances of the internal and external tests were also analyzed. The study contributed through the virtual screening of a bank of metabolites to select several compounds with potential antimicrobial activity, highlighting the biflavonoid amentoflavone which showed potential activity against the four strains.

Abstract The present study aims to describe the occurrence of triatomines and their infection rate by Trypanosoma cruzi, in an area of Chagas disease outbreak in Rodrigues Alves municipality, Acre state, Brazil. Collections were performed by passive search (capture of specimens by local people) and dissection of palm trees (Attalea butyracea and Mauritia flexuosa). Thirty two triatomines belonging to four species grouped into two genera (Rhodnius and Eratyrus) had T. cruzi infection rate of 15.6%. Only in A. butyracea triatomines were captured. The passive search was the most effective method for collection. The Nova Cintra triatomine fauna comprises four species and it is important to carry out future studies to understand the biology of these triatomines.
Resumen El presente estudio tiene como objetivo describir la aparición de triatominos y la infección causada por Trypanosoma cruzi, en un área de brote de la enfermedad de Chagas en el municipio de Rodrigues Alves, estado de Acre, Brasil. Las recolecciones se realizaron mediante búsqueda pasiva y disección en palmeras (Attalea butyracea y Mauritia flexuosa). Treinta y dos triatominos pertenecientes a cuatro especies agrupadas en dos géneros (Rhodnius y Eratyrus) tenían una tasa de infección por T. cruzi del 15,6%. Solo en A. butyracea se capturaron triatominos. La búsqueda pasiva fue el método más efectivo para la recolección. La fauna triatomina de Nova Cintra comprende cuatro especies, es importante realizar futuros estudios para comprender su biología.

A chemical investigation of Anaxagorea dolichocarpa Sprague & Sandwith, a member of Annonaceae family, was carried out. The ethanolic extract from the roots of this plant led, by chromatography tecniches, to isolation of the new azaphenanthrene alkaloids dolichocarpine (1) and 9-methoxyeupolauramine (2), besides the known alkaloids eupolauramine (3), 3-methoxyeupolauridine (4), eupolauramine (5) and 4-methylsampangine (6). The structures of isolated compounds were established by 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, tandem MSn and IR data. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1 - 5 was evaluated against HCT-116 (human colorectal carcinoma) and L929 (murine fibroblast) cell lines.

RESUMO A estaquia é o principal método de propagação vegetativa utilizado na produção de mudas de Coffea canephora. Neste método, são utilizadas matrizes conduzidas em um campo específico, denominado de jardim clonal, que deve ser manejado para produção de estacas clonais. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a produção de estacas e a exportação de nutrientes por cafeeiros Coffea canephora em diferentes épocas na Amazônia Sul Ocidental. O experimento foi conduzido em esquema de parcelas subdivididas no tempo, 6 × 3, formado pela combinação de seis genótipos clonais de Coffea canephora (parcela) e três épocas de coleta de estacas (sub parcelas). Os genótipos foram: C-057, C-088, C-089, C-125, C-130 e C-160; e as épocas de coleta de avaliação foram: janeiro/2017, maio/2017 e setembro/2017. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. O período de estiagem, que foi de maio a setembro, proporciona menor acúmulo de massa seca de hastes ortotrópicas por plantas matrizes de Coffea canephora, porém, possibilita a obtenção de maior número de estacas viáveis para produção de mudas clonais. O acúmulo de nutrientes pelas hastes ortotrópicas destinadas a produção de estacas segue a seguinte ordem: N > K > Ca > Mg > S > P > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu. A exportação de nutrientes pelas estacas segue ordem decrescente: K > N > Ca > Mg > P > S > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu.
ABSTRACT Cutting is the main vegetative propagation method used for the production of Coffea canephora plantlets. In this method, parent plants are conducted in a specific field, called clonal garden, which must be managed to produce clonal cuttings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of cuttings and the export of nutrients by Coffea canephora in different periods in the Southwestern Amazon. The experiment was carried out in a 6 × 3 split-plot scheme (repeated measures in time), consisting of the combination of six clonal Coffea canephora genotypes (plot) and three cutting collection periods (subplots). The genotypes were: C-057, C-088, C-089, C-125, C-130 and C-160; and the evaluation sampling times were January/2017, May/2017 and September/2017. The applied design was a completely randomized design with four repetitions. The dry season, from May to September, promotes lower orthotropic stem dry mass accumulation by Coffea canephora, but allows obtaining a larger number of viable cuttings for the production of clonal plantlets. Nutrient accumulation by orthotropic stems for cutting production follows the following order: N > K > Ca > Mg > S > P > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu. Nutrient export by the cuttings follows a descending order: K > N > Ca > Mg > P > S > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu.

Abstract Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a major cause of preventable death and disability in children and young adults. Despite significant advances in medical technology and increased understanding of disease mechanisms, RHD continues to be a serious public health problem throughout the world, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Echocardiographic screening has played a key role in improving the accuracy of diagnosing RHD and has highlighted the disease burden. Most affected patients present with severe valve disease and limited access to life-saving cardiac surgery or percutaneous valve intervention, contributing to increased mortality and other complications. Although understanding of disease pathogenesis has advanced in recent years, key questions remain to be addressed. Preventing or providing early treatment for streptococcal infections is the most important step in reducing the burden of this disease.

Abstract Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main vector of some neglected diseases, including dengue. It is very important to develop formulations that increase effectiveness of vector control with low toxicity. Quercetin is a plant-derived flavonoid that modulates the development of some insects. The low water solubility of quercetin impairs the development of water-dispersible commercial products. To circumvent this problem, the preparation of nanoformulations is considered promising. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of bulk and quercetin nanosuspension against A. aegypti larvae and also to investigate their ecotoxicity. Quercetin nanosuspension was produced by a solvent displacement method followed by solvent evaporation and was maintained in two different temperatures (4 and 25 ºC). Its size distribution and zeta potential were monitored along 30 days. The influence of quercetin nanosuspension and bulk-quercetin was investigated at various concentrations against A. aegypti and the green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The quercetin nanosuspension presented higher stability at 4 ºC and negative zeta potential values. Quercetin nanosuspension and bulk-quercetin adversely affected the larvae development, especially at the highest concentrations. Larvae mortality was between 44% and 100% (48 h) for quercetin nanosuspension at 100 and 500 ppm, respectively. The bulk-quercetin induced around 50% mortality regardless the concentration used at this same time-period. Absence of emerging mosquitoes from water was observed on the survival larvae of all the treated groups. Quercetin nanosuspension was less toxic than bulk-quercetin against C. vulgaris, especially at higher concentrations. These data indicate that quercetin nanosuspension may represent a potential larvicide for A. aegypti control, once they induced larvae death and inhibited the survival ones to emerge from water. In addition, it did not demonstrated ecotoxicity against a non-target organism, highlighting its better properties, when compared to the bulk-quercetin.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos das condições de armazenamento sobre a germinação de sementes de A. cearensis. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em parcelas subdivididas ao longo do tempo com quatro repetições. As condições de armazenamento como recipiente hermético no refrigerador; recipiente hermético em laboratório, sacos de papel em laboratório e nitrogênio líquido foram avaliadas durante 27 meses. No laboratório foram avaliadas germinação, taxa de germinação, uniformidade de germinação, açúcares solúveis totais e redutores da radícula. Em casa de vegetação avaliou-se emergência das plântulas, taxa de emergência e altura de mudas no decorrer dos 30 dias. As sementes armazenadas no refrigerador mantiveram alta germinação inicial e diminuíram a partir do 21º mês. O armazenamento de sementes em sacos de papel em laboratório apresentou baixa emergência e menores mudas. Os açúcares solúveis totais e os açúcares redutores são mobilizados quando as sementes são armazenadas a baixas temperaturas. Não é aconselhável armazenar sementes de A. cearensis em ambiente de laboratório sem um recipiente hermético. As sementes de A. cearensis mantidas em ambiente refrigerado mantêm a viabilidade durante pelo menos dois anos.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of storage conditions on the germination of A. cearensis seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized into split plots over time with four replicates. The storage conditions of the airtight containers in the refrigerator and laboratory, paper bags in the laboratory and liquid nitrogen were assessed for 27 months. In the laboratory, we evaluated the germination, the germination rate, uniformity of germination, and total soluble and reducing sugars in the radicle. In the greenhouse, we evaluated seedling emergence, emergence rate and height of 30-day-old seedlings. Seeds stored in the refrigerator maintained a high initial germination rate, which decreased from the 21st month. Seeds stored in paper bags in the laboratory showed low emergence and small seedlings. Total soluble sugars and reducing sugars were mobilized when the seeds were stored at low temperatures. Thus, it is not advisable to store A. cearensis seeds in a laboratory environment without airtight containers. A. cearensis seeds kept in a refrigerated environment maintained their viability for at least two years.
