ABSTRACT The canonical correlation is used to correlate groups of distinct variables. The objective of this study was to use canonical correlation analysis to evaluate the interaction between water quality attributes clogging-causing and the hydraulic performance of non-pressure compensating drippers operating with dilutions of aquaculture effluent in well water. The experiment was in a completely randomized design in a split-split-plot scheme with three replicates, with five dilutions in the plots (Dilution 1: 100% aquaculture effluent; Dilution 2: 75% aquaculture effluent + 25% well water; Dilution 3: 50% aquaculture effluent + 50% well water; Dilution 4: 25% aquaculture effluent + 75% well water; and Dilution 5: 100% well water), three emitters in the sub-plots (ST (1.6 L h-1), SL (1.6 L h-1) and NJ (1.7 L h-1)), and three operating times in the sub-subplots (0, 80 and 160 hours, in which 0 hours operating time means the start of evaluations). The statistical analyses performed were correlation matrix and canonical analysis. The canonical correlation analysis indicated that when the concentrations of attributes increase, the hydraulic performance of the drippers decreases. The interaction of this group of attributes indicates that the clogging of drippers operating with the five dilutions of aquaculture effluent in well water occurs by the combined action of physical, chemical, and biological agents. The ST dripper was the least sensitive to the group of quality attributes of the dilutions, whereas the most sensitive was the SL dripper. variables cloggingcausing causing nonpressure non pressure splitsplitplot split plot replicates 1 100 2 75 25 3 50 4 5 water, , water) subplots sub 1.6 16 6 (1. h1, h1 h h-1 1.7 17 7 h-1)) subsubplots 0, (0 8 evaluations. evaluations . evaluations) increase decreases physical chemical agents 10 1. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract: Background: Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum) are an important type of pulse whose production is hindered by poor weed control. Objective: To assess lactofen selectivity levels and to uncover tolerance mechanisms in commercial genotypes. Methods: Four genotypes and weed species were grown under controlled-environment conditions and subjected to lactofen dose-response assays (11.2–2,880 g a.i. ha−1). Visual evaluations performed until 35 days after application, when biomass was quantified and selectivity indexes obtained using regression analysis. Following 14C-lactofen application, absorption and translocation were assessed until 168h after treatment (HAT), when chickpea plants were washed to remove the unabsorbed herbicide or subjected to autoradiography and tissue combustion. Lastly, 14C-lactofen was applied and metabolites extracted at 96 HAT, and their retention factors (Rf) determined by thin layer chromatography and radioscanner reading. Results: Tridax procumbens and Amaranthus spinosus were highly susceptible to lactofen. Chickpea genotypes tolerated lactofen at the highest labelled used rate in soybeans (180 g a.i. ha−1). Lactofen absorption was high (88.1%–94.6%) and translocation was limited (< 2.5%) across genotypes - a similar trend observed in susceptible species, and hence are not implicated in lactofen tolerance. One main metabolite was found in chickpea genotypes, accounting for 12.5%–19.4% of applied radioactivity; the chickpea genotype with the highest tolerance level (BRS Cicero) was the only one in which two metabolites were quantified. Altogether, these results suggest that lactofen tolerance in chickpeas could be conferred by enhanced herbicide metabolism. Conclusions: Lactofen could become an option for selective, post-emergence weed control in chickpeas. This study investigates the potential of Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts derived from carvacrol as anticancer agents. The synthesis process, involving the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with carvacrol acrylate as a Michael acceptor, resulted in stable adducts with impressive yields ranging from 60 to 92%, achieved within a maximum reaction time of 24 h. Through a screening process utilizing 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test, compound 6, identified as the acrylate/2-naphthyl adduct, emerged as the most active within the series among twelve compounds tested. Specifically, compound 6 exhibited a remarkably potent impact on neuroblastoma cell lines, particularly SH-SY5Y cells, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 8.7 µM after 72 h (42 times more potent than carvacrol, IC50 = 374.1 μM). The exploration of the selectivity index (SI) against normal cell lines demonstrated an outstanding SI of 4.28 compared to other compounds. Mechanistic studies on SH-SY5Y cells revealed a concentration-dependent apoptotic effect attributed to caspase 3/7 activation. In silico modeling showcased favorable pharmacokinetic properties for compound 6, including effective absorption after oral administration. Assessment of toxicity of compound 6 profile using brine shrimp and the Irwin test indicated low toxicity, highlighting its potential for future anticancer agent development. Abstract Different degrees in the biological activities of Canavalia rosea had been previously reported . In this study, our group assessed the cardioprotective effects of the ethyl acetate fraction (EAcF) of the Canavalia rosea leaves. Firstly, it was confirmed, by in vitro approach, that the EAcF has high antioxidant properties due to the presence of important secondary metabolites, as flavonoids. In order to explore their potential protector against cardiovascular disorders, hearts were previously perfused with EAcF (300 μg.mL-1) and submitted to the global ischemia followed by reperfusion in Langendorff system. The present findings have demonstrated that EAcF restored the left ventricular developed pressure and decreased the arrhythmias severity index. Furthermore, EAcF significantly increased the glutathiones peroxidase activity with decreased malondialdehyde and creatine kinase levels. EAcF was effective upon neither the superoxide dismutase, glutationes reductase nor the catalase activities. In addition, the Western blot analysis revealed that ischemia-reperfusion injury significantly upregulates caspase 3 protein expression, while EAcF abolishes this effect. These results provide evidence that the EAcF reestablishes the cardiac contractility and prevents arrhythmias; it is suggested that EAcF could be used to reduce injury caused by cardiac reperfusion. However more clinical studies should be performed, before applying it in the clinic. study (EAcF leaves Firstly confirmed approach metabolites flavonoids disorders 300 (30 μg.mL1 μgmL1 μgmL μg.mL 1 μg mL μg.mL-1 system index Furthermore levels dismutase addition ischemiareperfusion expression effect performed clinic 30 (3 mL1 μg.mL- (

The inadequate disposal of waste tires has caused environmental and public health problems. One of the direct harmful effects is the noise due to traffic. Waste rubber has been used in concrete to improve its acoustic performance and energy absorption. Studies carried out by the U. S. Federal Highway Administration show that barriers, regardless the material used, do not block completely but can reduce the volume of traffic noise by half. This study proposes concrete mixes containing waste tires and vermiculite to verify their acoustic properties for road barriers. The experiments include concrete with waste tires and vermiculite to replace the sand mass from 10% to 40%. An improvement in the acoustic properties was observed, reducing the total sound intensity level of the concrete acoustic barrier to 20 dB and 29 dB, for the frequencies of 500 Hz and 1000 Hz, respectively. problems absorption U S barriers half 10 40 40% observed 2 50 100 respectively 1 4 5

ABSTRACT Although extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are reported as extremely important to understand ecological interactions, the diversity of EFN-bearing plants remains underappreciated. In Brazil, studies are concentrated in Cerrado and extremely poorly known in other phytogeographic domains, such as Atlantic forest. Thus, this study provides one of the first checklists of angiosperms with EFNs in a protected area of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, bringing information about the richness, location of EFNs on the plant’s organs, as well as plant’s habit and conservation status. A total of 93 EFN-bearing species belonging to 61 genera and 29 families is reported, which corresponds to 16.5 % of the local flora. The vast majority has not been evaluated for their conservation status, and twenty species are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest. Vines and trees are the predominant plant habits and EFNs are mostly found on leaves. More than half of the species (53.7 %) comprises new additions to the world list of EFN-bearing plants, including the first record in Dilleniaceae. Our findings show a large number of EFN-bearing plant species from a single and small protected area in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. It reinforces the lack of studies of this nature, where further investigations are strongly recommended.

Abstract Background This manuscript presents data of screening and dose-response curves of a goosegrass population from Primavera do Leste, MT, Brazil, which results in the first official report of multiple resistance of goosegrass to ACCase and EPSPs inhibiting herbicides in Brazil. Objective Evaluate the control of a goosegrass population from Primavera do Leste, MT, Brazil, suspected of resistance to the glyphosate, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, and haloxyfop-methyl herbicides, using dose-response curves. Methods The study was carried out in two stages, the first in Brasília, DF, Brazil, and the second in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. The first stage consisted in the initial evaluation and identification of resistance, which was confirmed in the second. In the first stage, the herbicides glyphosate, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, and haloxyfop-methyl were applied to susceptible and resistant goosegrass populations (F1 and F2 generations) with plants with 2 and 3 tillers, using nine rates (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 times the recommended rate). In the second stage, the herbicides were applied to susceptible and resistant populations with plants with 4 leaves, using 12 rates (0, 0.03125, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 times the recommended rate). Results The high sensitivity of susceptible plants combined with the high resistance level of resistant ones resulted in high resistance factors for fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and haloxyfop-methyl, with values greater than 27.8. The resistance factor for glyphosate ranged from 3.3 to 11, depending on growth stage at application time. Conclusions The goosegrass population from Primavera do Leste, MT, Brazil, presented resistance to EPSPs (glyphosate) and ACCase (haloxyfop-methyl and fenoxaprop-ethyl) inhibiting herbicides.

A series of drugs was investigated to determine structural, electronic and pharmacological properties, as well as the molecular affinity for the main protease of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The drugs were submitted to density functional theory calculations to optimize structures and predict binding preferences. The optimized geometries were used in molecular docking simulations. In the docking study, the receiver was considered rigid and the drugs flexible. The Lamarckian genetic algorithm with global search and Pseudo-Solis and Wets with local search were adopted for docking. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicological properties were obtained from the Pre-ADMET online server. In this series, the antiviral atazanavir showed the potential to inhibit the main protease of SARS-CoV-2, based on the free binding energy, inhibition constant, binding interactions and its favorable pharmacological properties. Therefore, we recommend carrying out further studies with in vitro tests and subsequent clinical tests to analyze its effectiveness in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract Influenza A virus, the main flu agent, affects billions of people worldwide. Conventional treatments still present limitations related to drug-resistance and severe side effects. As a result, natural product-derived molecules have been increasingly investigated as prospect drug candidates. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible anti-flu activity and to evaluate the toxicity and pharmacokinetic parameters, by in silico approaches, of the Schinopsis brasiliensis Engl. phytochemical compounds. Nine phytocompounds and six antiviral drugs (Amantadine, Umifenovir, Favipiravir, Nitazoxanide, Oseltamivir, Zanamivir) were selected for the analyses against four Influenza A proteins: neuraminidase, polymerase basic protein 2, hemagglutinin and M2 ion channel protein. The molecular docking, the predicted antiviral activity, the predicted toxicity and the pharmacokinetics investigations were conducted. The obtained results demonstrated that Syringaresinol and Cycloartenone display promising in silico antiviral activity (binding energy < 5.0 and ≥ 9.0 kcal/mol) and safety (low toxicity than commercial anti-flu drugs). Overall, this study corroborated the hypothesis that S. brasiliensis barks extract has a biological activity against Influenza A virus. Additionally, Syringaresinol and Cycloartenone have multiple targets in Influenza A virus and showed themselves as the most promising phytocompounds to be isolated and considered for the therapeutic arsenal against the flu.

ABSTRACT The aim is to describe the clinical-pathological and treatment data of a patient with a cutaneous horn (CH) arising on oral tissues and to compare this with a literature-review. This case affects the lower-lip of an 86-years-old female. After excisional biopsy, the histopathological examination revealed a CH associated with actinic cheilitis. Only 23 similar cases have been reported in literature. At this site CH mainly affects the lower-lip of white males in a wide-age range. Excision should be the treatment of choice to enable pathological examination of the underlying lesion, since most cases were associated with pre-malignant/malignant lesions.

ABSTRACT When determining plant transpiration (TR) using the thermal dissipation probe method, it is necessary to calibrate the sap flow (SF) estimation equation for each species under study, and thus obtain reliable information about the water demand of crops. This study aims to calibrate the equation used to determine SF using the thermal dissipation probe for atemoya cultivation. The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of the Universidade do Estado da Bahia, Juazeiro, Northeast Brazil. Atemoya plants in the initial phase of development were transplanted into 21.5-l pots arranged on weighing platforms that acted as lysimeters. The SF was determined by the thermal dissipation probe method using 1-cm-long probes. The angular coefficient of the Granier equation was adjusted by minimizing the absolute deviations between the accumulated daily SF and TR measured using the lysimeter. The results demonstrated that the application of the Granier method is satisfactory for estimating the TR of the atemoya and that it is necessary to adjust the angular coefficient of the equation. The mean absolute error between SF and TR was 3.1%.

Abstract Background: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation seems to be a promising option to intensify the rehabilitation and improve the exercise capacity of patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the hemodynamic (heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean blood pressure) and respiratory (respiratory rate and oxygen saturation) responses to neuromuscular electrical stimulation in the immediate postoperative period in patients submitted to cardiac surgery and to verify its feasibility and safety. Methods: This is a pilot randomized controlled trial, wherein critical patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery were randomly assigned to a control group, using sham neuromuscular electrical stimulation, or an experimental group, submitted to neuromuscular electrical stimulation sessions (FES), for 60 min, with a 50-Hz frequency, 200-µs pulse duration, time on: 3 s, and time off: 9 s. Data distribution was evaluated by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The analysis of variance was used and a p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Thirty patients were included in the study. The neuromuscular electrical stimulation was applied within the first 23.13 ± 5.24 h after cardiac surgery, and no changes were found regarding the hemodynamic and respiratory variables between the patients who underwent neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and those in the control group. Conclusions: In the present study, neuromuscular electrical stimulation did not promote changes in hemodynamic and respiratory responses of patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery.

ABSTRACT Conservationist systems of crop management increases the amount of substrate, alters fertility and increases soil biological activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of soil management systems on the chemical attributes and microbial activity of soil under cassava crop. The experiment was set as completely randomized design in a factorial scheme of 2 x 3 x 2, being two systems of cultivation (minimum with only mown; minimum with mown and incorporation), three types of soil coverage (fallow; Crotalaria juncea L.; Canavalia ensiformis L.) and two soil depths (0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m), with four repetitions. The production of dry mass from cover crops, the soil chemical attributes and the soil microbial activity were evaluated. There were no differences between management systems, and the C. juncea cover crop presented superior dry mass production among the soil coverages. The concentrations of soil Ca and K were greater in the fallow coverage and C. juncea areas in the 0-0.10 m soil layer; however, these nutrients differ in the soil layer below (0.10-0.20 m). There were no differences for the basal respiration of soil microorganisms in both soil depths or among soil coverage, but the carbon from microbial biomass was superior in the most superficial soil layer where more substrate is available to soil microorganisms.

ABSTRACT Objective To verify the presence of variants in HNF1B in a sample of the Brazilian population selected according to the presence of renal cysts associated with hyperglycemia. Subjects and methods We evaluated 28 unrelated patients with clinical suspicion of HNF1B mutation because of the concomitant presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) or prediabetes and renal cysts. Genotyping was accomplished using Sanger sequencing or multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). In positive cases, available relatives were recruited. Results We found two patients with HNF1B mutations. The first presented the variant p.Pro328Leufs*48(c.983delC) and had DM, renal cysts, and hypomagnesemia. The second presented a heterozygous whole gene deletion in HNF1B, DM, renal cysts, body and tail pancreatic agenesis, and hypomagnesemia; this alteration was also found in his two siblings and his father. Conclusion The recruitment of suspected cases of HNF1B gene mutations in Brazilians due to hyperglycemia and renal cysts presents two positive cases. Our cases contribute to the annotation of clinical and biochemical phenotypes of this rare form of maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY).
